- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. Good evening, I'm
- 0:06Speaker 1: Zach Power.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Speaker, the ayes 21, the nays 18. The motion has
- 0:12Speaker 2: been carried.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Words forever etched into history, the Churchill Falls deal has
- 0:19Speaker 1: passed in the House of Assembly, but only by a
- 0:21Speaker 1: slim margin. The vote came down just after 7 p.m.
- 0:25Speaker 1: in the entire PC caucus, and Eddie Joyce voted in favor,
- 0:29Speaker 1: while the entire Liberal caucus, NDP, and Keith Russell voted
- 0:34Speaker 1: against it. The decision comes at the end of a
- 0:36Speaker 1: four-day special debate on the multi-billion dollar hydroelectric deal, during
- 0:41Speaker 1: which several experts were brought into the floor of the
- 0:44Speaker 1: legislature for elected officials to question them. VOCM News is
- 0:48Speaker 1: continuing to follow this story, and it all comes... as
- 0:52Speaker 1: MHA for Lake Melville rose in the House of Assembly
- 0:54Speaker 1: earlier today condemning the latest agreement, and as we heard,
- 0:58Speaker 1: he's voted against it. He cited serious concerns about the
- 1:01Speaker 1: relationship with the Innu Nation.
- 1:04Speaker 3: We have to talk about this project being on Innu land,
- 1:07Speaker 3: and Innu Nation should be respected during this process, and
- 1:10Speaker 3: they have not been, and I can say that this
- 1:12Speaker 3: government has given them the ultimate disrespect in challenging their
- 1:15Speaker 3: identity and their history in Labrador, Mr.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Speaker.
- 1:18Speaker 1: The UNO Nation wrote all members of the House of
- 1:20Speaker 1: Assembly just ahead of the vote, urging them not to
- 1:24Speaker 1: vote for the deal. Premier Tony Wakeham said earlier this
- 1:27Speaker 1: afternoon that the deal is better than the previous one
- 1:31Speaker 1: in every way.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Let me just ask one more thing to that. You know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: you have a federal government here. The Prime Minister of
- 1:38Speaker 2: the country has a plan to build Canada strong, talks
- 1:41Speaker 2: about the need for electrification, talks about the need to
- 1:45Speaker 2: build energy corridors. And the Liberal members in the House
- 1:48Speaker 2: of Assembly are prepared to walk away from that.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Liberal leader John Hogan cited concerns with market-based pricing.
- 1:56Speaker 4: The other frustrating part about that is we get two
- 1:58Speaker 4: different stories about why market-based pricing was given away. The
- 2:00Speaker 4: negotiating team said it was very clear to them early
- 2:04Speaker 4: on it was complex, so they walked away from it.
- 2:07Speaker 4: The oversight panel said that it was given away as
- 2:10Speaker 4: part of the negotiations. So not only did we give away,
- 2:12Speaker 4: I think, what was the most important thing to Newfoundlanders
- 2:15Speaker 4: and Labradorians, we have two different versions from this team
- 2:17Speaker 4: about why it was given away, so that's troubling.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And of course, VOCM News will continue to follow that
- 2:21Speaker 1: story and have more information on your VOCM mornings tomorrow
- 2:26Speaker 1: between 6 and 9, and we'll hear from some of
- 2:28Speaker 1: those leaders at that time. Batten down the hatches, an
- 2:31Speaker 1: intense low-pressure system will bring strong northwesterly winds to parts
- 2:35Speaker 1: of the eastern portion of the island on Saturday. Environment
- 2:38Speaker 1: Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard says the slow-moving system will start
- 2:41Speaker 1: to intensify as it moves across the island early Saturday morning.
- 2:45Speaker 1: A special weather statement has been issued for many parts
- 2:48Speaker 1: of the island, including most or all the eastern portion.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Those winds are going to pick up from the northwest
- 2:54Speaker 4: starting during the overnight hours Friday night into early Saturday morning.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And that's your VOCM On Demand News. I'm Zach Power.
