• 8:23
Speaker 1: it was terrible, that he was convicted of, and it
• 8:26
Speaker 1: was a horrible thing what Epstein did. I think we
• 8:28
Speaker 1: both responded to how we both knew him, and both
• 8:31
Speaker 1: responded to how terrible his actions were, or what he did.
• 8:35
Speaker 1: Are you talking about 2019? Question, it could be 2019.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: Any of the crimes of Mr. Epstein, Glenn Maxwell, have
• 8:43
Speaker 1: you discussed them with Leon Black? Answer, 2019, no. Question,
• 8:48
  Speaker 1: Glenn Dubin. Answer, I don't. Again, 2019, I'm sorry. It's

Speaker 1: with Glenn Dubin. Question, when you would have discussed the

• 9:04
Speaker 1: but you recall you did discuss them with Mr. Black. Answer,
• 9:08
  Speaker 1: 2019 crimes, yeah. I don't recall if I did, so
• 9:11
Speaker 1: I would scratch Leon Black. I would say with Glenn
• 9:14
Speaker 1: and Eva Dubin. Question, but you did meet with Mr.
• 9:17
Speaker 1: Black about the 2008 conviction? Answer, I met with Leon
• 9:20
Speaker 1: Black about business and other things, and we may have
• 9:22
Speaker 1: talked about it, but I didn't meet him for that
• 9:25
Speaker 1: purpose of talking about 2008 or 2019. Question, what did
• 9:30
Speaker 1: you discuss with Glenn Dubin? Answer, Glenn and Eva and
• 9:33
Speaker 1: I are good friends. I think we just talked about
• 9:36
Speaker 1: Epstein overall. We didn't talk any specifics about the crimes
• 9:39
Speaker 1: committed and whatnot, but just it impacted both of our
• 9:43
Speaker 1: lives dramatically. And I think we talked about that. Question,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: how did it impact their lives dramatically? Answer, I think
• 9:50
Speaker 1: both the Dubins and I have been ostracized by part
• 9:52
Speaker 1: of society, have been excluded from institutions that we were
• 9:56
Speaker 1: part of before so investments that we've made we've had
• 9:59
Speaker 1: to turn away from well here's an idea stop abusing
• 10:03
Speaker 1: people while you're hanging out with Epstein thanks for coming
• 10:06
Speaker 1: to my TED talk question how did you be how
• 10:09
Speaker 1: did you or have you met Benjamin Netanyahu answer once

• 10:17
Speaker 1: in Israel question who else was present Answer, just me. Question,

Speaker 1: Minister and I was having difficulty getting on his calendar.
• 10:41
Speaker 1: And I mentioned that to Epstein and then I met
• 10:43
Speaker 1: with the Prime Minister. Question, what was Mr. Epstein's relationship
• 10:47
Speaker 1: to Benjamin Netanyahu? Answer, I think he knew him. That's all. Question,
• 10:51
Speaker 1: how would you characterize a relationship? Answer, I didn't know.
• 10:55
Speaker 1: I wouldn't characterize it. Question, why would you ask Mr.
• 10:58
Speaker 1: Epstein to help you get on the calendar? Answer, I
• 11:02
Speaker 1: think that he had a relationship with individuals in Israel.
• 11:04
Speaker 1: He knew Ehud Barak well, and I think he may
• 11:07
Speaker 1: have mentioned that he knew Benjamin Netanyahu. So I asked
• 11:10
Speaker 1: if he could help get me a meeting. And when
• 11:13
Speaker 1: did you meet with Mr. Netanyahu? Answer, I don't recall. Question,
• 11:17
Speaker 1: why were you attempting to get on his calendar? Answer,
• 11:20
Speaker 1: I was visiting Israel on business, and I thought it
• 11:22

• 11:25
Speaker 1: would you say this was around March 2011? Answer, it
• 11:29
Speaker 1: could have been. Question, what did you discuss at the meeting? Answer,
• 11:34
Speaker 1: I just think we talked about the Middle East and geopolitics,
• 11:36
Speaker 1: nothing specific. Question, why would Benjamin Netanyahu agree to meet
• 11:41
Speaker 1: with you when there was no set topic? What did
• 11:44
Speaker 1: he believe the reason was for the meeting? Answer, it's possible,
• 11:47
Speaker 1: I don't want to speculate, it was a long time ago. Question,
• 11:50
Speaker 1: why was he also interested meeting with you? Answer, this
• 11:54
  Speaker 1: is 2011. Question, uh-huh. Answer, I was a senior executive
• 11:58
Speaker 1: of J.P. Morgan. J.P. Morgan had a lot of business

• 12:09

Speaker 1: trusted by Mr. Epstein? Answer, sure. Question, and the same
• 17:14
Speaker 1: question for yourself. Would you agree you were highly trusted
• 17:18
Speaker 1: by Mr. Epstein to be appointed executor of his estate? Answer, sure. Question,
• 17:22
Speaker 1: why do you think that is? Answer, because I think
• 17:25
Speaker 1: when you appoint someone as an executor of your estate,
• 17:28
Speaker 1: you trust them. Question, now, why did Mr. Epstein trust
• 17:32
Speaker 1: you to that degree? Answer, the same answer. Question, what
• 17:36
Speaker 1: answer is that? Answer, oh, I think he saw me
• 17:39
Speaker 1: as someone who was trustworthy. Brignac, question. Have you ever
• 17:44
Speaker 1: had any conversation with Mr. Summers about the estate? Answer.
• 17:48
Speaker 1: One thing I want to clarify is I did not
• 17:49
Speaker 1: see documents with respect to his estate and so I
• 17:52
Speaker 1: don't recall the documents just to be clear on that. Question.
• 17:56
Speaker 1: Did you ever discuss the estate with Mr. Summers? Answer. No. Question.
• 18:00
Speaker 1: When did you learn of Mr. Epstein's death? Answer. I
• 18:03
Speaker 1: believe the day he died. Question. How did you learn? Answer.
• 18:06
Speaker 1: My wife told me that she heard it. Question. Who
• 18:09
Speaker 1: did she hear it from? Answer. I don't know. Question.
• 18:13
Speaker 1: What did you do after you heard about his death? Answer, nothing. Question,
• 18:18
Speaker 1: who'd you speak to next? Answer, I don't recall. Question,
• 18:22
Speaker 1: did Mr. Epstein demonstrate suicidal tendencies in all the years
• 18:25
Speaker 1: that you've known him? Answer, no. Question, do you believe
• 18:28
Speaker 1: that Mr. Epstein committed suicide? Answer, yes. Question, why? Answer,
• 18:32
Speaker 1: that's what the police say. Question, how many lawsuits have
• 18:36
Speaker 1: you ever appeared as the defendant in? Answer, I think
• 18:40
Speaker 1: the lawsuit in the U.S. Virgin Islands against J.P. Morgan.
• 18:42
Speaker 1: I believe I was named as a defendant. Question, is
• 18:45
Speaker 1: that the only one? Answer, no. I think that there's
• 18:48
Speaker 1: a current lawsuit against Barclays where I'm named a defendant.
• 18:51
Speaker 1: Those would be the two. Mr. Sullivan, we can clarify you,
• 18:56
Speaker 1: clarify for you on the record, he was not a defendant.
• 18:59
Speaker 1: He was a third party defendant in the J.P. Morgan lawsuit.
• 19:02
Speaker 1: And there is one other class action that relates to stock,
• 19:05
Speaker 1: which we can provide. Question by Ms. Brignac, how many
• 19:09
Speaker 1: lawsuits are you named as a defendant? and related to
• 19:12
Speaker 1: your work with Mr. Epstein? Answer, I don't believe any. Question,
• 19:17
Speaker 1: how many lawsuits are you listed as a defendant in
• 19:20
Speaker 1: the reference of sexual abuse? Answer, I believe one. Question,
• 19:25
Speaker 1: at any point have you or any of your representatives
• 19:28
Speaker 1: or agents secured a settlement in connection with Mr. Epstein,
• 19:31
Speaker 1: Glenn Maxwell, or any of their victims? Answer, no. Question,
• 19:35
Speaker 1: reporting and documents reviewed by this committee reflect that a
• 19:39
Speaker 1: victim of Mr. Epstein settled with his estate and receive
• 19:42
Speaker 1: $ 6 million as part of the victim's compensation fund. However, Mr. Staley,
• 19:47
Speaker 1: you and Leon Black are explicitly carved out of this. settlement.
• 19:51
Speaker 1: And the effect of this carve-out allows the victim to
• 19:53
Speaker 1: sue you and Mr. Black in the future. Why were
• 19:56
Speaker 1: you carved out of this settlement? Answer, I don't know. Question,
• 20:00
Speaker 1: when did you become aware that you were carved out
• 20:02
Speaker 1: of the settlement? Sullivan, that's probably privileged. Brignac, question, did
• 20:07
Speaker 1: anyone besides your attorney Tell you that you were carved
• 20:10
Speaker 1: out of the settlement? Answer, no. Question, who's the victim
• 20:14
Speaker 1: in the settlement? Answer, I don't know. Question, which case
• 20:18
Speaker 1: are you listed in that relates to sexual abuse? Sullivan, well,
• 20:21
Speaker 1: it's a little confusing. Maybe we can help, if you
• 20:24
Speaker 1: care to hear from me quickly on that. The J.P.
• 20:27
Speaker 1: Morgan lawsuit is dismissed. He was a third-party defendant. J.P.
• 20:31
Speaker 1: Morgan settled. There was no claim against him by a
• 20:34
Speaker 1: victim in the sense of he would pay anything, so
• 20:37
Speaker 1: it was just a third-party complaint. The case is settled. Mr.
• 20:40
Speaker 1: Staley paid nothing. Secondly, there's a class action, the essence
• 20:44
Speaker 1: of which, and that's on the West Coast, and that's
• 20:47
Speaker 1: a claim that Barclays and Staley combined failed to provide
• 20:50
Speaker 1: accurate information about the relationship. And there is one other
• 20:54
Speaker 1: that we are just finding out about that seems to be,
• 20:56
Speaker 1: I'm not even sure what it is, but I can
• 20:58
Speaker 1: find it. Brignac, Mr. Staley, which case are you referring
• 21:02
Speaker 1: to when you said you're listed in one case related
• 21:05
Speaker 1: to sexual abuse? Staley, the one filed against J.P. Morgan? Brignac,
• 21:10
Speaker 1: I'm entering into the record, Majority Exhibit 9 from the
• 21:13
Speaker 1: Wall Street Journal. We'll go off record. Comes back on. Question, Mr. Staley,
• 21:17
Speaker 1: who's the woman in this photograph? Answer, I believe it's redacted.
• 21:21
Speaker 1: Is that right? Question, have you ever met this woman before? Answer,
• 21:25
Speaker 1: I just recognized another photo that I've been shown by
• 21:27
Speaker 1: my lawyers that she was in, but I don't recognize
• 21:30
Speaker 1: her per se, no. Question, have you had sex with
• 21:32
Speaker 1: this woman? Answer, no. Question, the committee has identified this
• 21:37
Speaker 1: woman to be redacted The same woman who was dressed
• 21:40
Speaker 1: in the Snow White costume. Have you ever seen this
• 21:43
Speaker 1: woman dressed in the Snow White costume? Answer no. Brignac,
• 21:47
Speaker 1: that'll conclude the majority's questions. We'll go off the record.
• 21:50
Speaker 1: So they come back on, and now Redacted is asking
• 21:53
Speaker 1: questions for the minority. Question, Mr. Staley, I'd like to
• 21:57
Speaker 1: pick up where we left off, which is around 2008.
• 22:00
Speaker 1: I'd like to introduce as Minority Exhibit S an internal J.P.
• 22:03
Speaker 1: Morgan document logging comments from rapid response meetings with Mr. Epstein.
• 22:09
Speaker 1: The document we're handing you is an excerpt of a
• 22:11
Speaker 1: larger document. On page 15, there's an entry from July 15th, 2008.
• 22:17
Speaker 1: In one column, it states, quote, follow-up meeting after news
• 22:21
Speaker 1: that Epstein was sentenced to 12 months in jail for
• 22:23
Speaker 1: solicitation of prostitute and six months for procuring a person
• 22:27
Speaker 1: under the age of 18 for prostitution. In a corresponding column,
• 22:31
Speaker 1: it states, quote, Catherine will go back to J.E.S. and
• 22:35
Speaker 1: tell him we're comfortable or uncomfortable with Epstein and do
• 22:38
Speaker 1: not want to go to Cutler for approval. Catherine refers
• 22:41
Speaker 1: to Catherine Keating, correct? Answer, could be. Question, do you
• 22:45
Speaker 1: know of another Catherine who was involved in Epstein's accounts
• 22:47
Speaker 1: at this time? Answer, no. Question, Miss Keating was head
• 22:50
Speaker 1: of J.P. Morgan's private bank, starting in 2009, correct? Answer, correct. Question,
• 22:57
Speaker 1: who does the we in We Are Uncomfortable with Epstein
• 22:59
Speaker 1: refer to? Answer, I don't know. Question, could it refer
• 23:03
Speaker 1: to employees at the private bank? Answer, yes. Question, do
• 23:06
Speaker 1: you remember Miss Keating coming to you about Mr. Epstein
• 23:09
Speaker 1: during this period? Answer, I believe that we talked about Epstein, yes. Question,
• 23:14
Speaker 1: and when was that? Answer, again, this is dated July 2008. Question,
• 23:19
Speaker 1: July 15th, 2008, correct. But it says Catherine will go
• 23:23
Speaker 1: back to J.E.S. Answer, I would say it's around that date. Question,
• 23:27
Speaker 1: do you remember what she said? Answer, no. Question, presumably
• 23:31
Speaker 1: it was about Mr. Epstein, correct, and concerns that the
• 23:34
Speaker 1: private bank had with him. Answer, and whether they kept
• 23:38
Speaker 1: accounts with him, yes. Question, and do you remember how
• 23:42
Speaker 1: you responded to those concerns? Answer, I think I was
• 23:45
Speaker 1: leaving it up to Cutler at the time. Question, if
• 23:48
Speaker 1: you were leaving it up to Mr. Cutler, then why
• 23:50
Speaker 1: does it say Catherine will go to J.E.S.? Clearly, you're
• 23:54
Speaker 1: the person that she thinks she needs to go to here. Answer,
• 23:59
Speaker 1: I don't understand why it says this implies that she's
• 24:01
Speaker 1: not comfortable or they're not comfortable going to Cutler. I
• 24:04
Speaker 1: don't understand. He's the general counsel for the bank. Question.
• 24:09
Speaker 1: Do you think it could also mean that they're contemplating
• 24:11
Speaker 1: going around you to Mr. Cutler? If you did not
• 24:14
Speaker 1: agree to end J.P. Morgan's relationship with Mr. Epstein? Answer.
• 24:18
Speaker 1: I was all for going to Cutler. I would not
• 24:20
Speaker 1: consider that going around me. Question. You previously testified that Mr.
• 24:25
Speaker 1: Cutler decided that J.P. Morgan should keep Mr. Epstein as
• 24:28
Speaker 1: a client following his guilty plea. Answer. As a banking
• 24:32
Speaker 1: client only, yes. Question. Can you tell us what you
• 24:35
Speaker 1: remember about that decision or any conversation you had with Mr.
• 24:39
Speaker 1: Cutler at the time? Answer again, no. It was Cutler's
• 24:43
Speaker 1: decision and I left it so Cutler can make the decision.
• 24:46
Speaker 1: All right, folks, we're going to wrap up right here.
• 24:48
Speaker 1: And in the next episode, we're going to pick up
• 24:50
Speaker 1: with question I'd like to introduce as Minority Exhibit T.
• 24:55
Speaker 1: All the information that goes with this episode can be
• 24:57
Speaker 1: found in the description box. What's up, everyone? And welcome
• 25:01
Speaker 1: to another episode of the Epstein Chronicles. In this episode,
• 25:05
Speaker 1: we're getting right back to the Jess Staley transcript from
• 25:08
Speaker 1: his trip to Congress. Question. I'd like to introduce as
• 25:11
Speaker 1: Minority Exhibit T an internal due diligence report with an
• 25:15
Speaker 1: embedded article on Mr. Epstein titled, The Sex Trafficking Model Scout,
• 25:19
Speaker 1: dated August 4th, 2010. The Bates number is EFTA 02811303. Question. Question.
• 25:29
Speaker 1: This article describes the modeling agency MC Squared, which it
• 25:33
Speaker 1: notes that Mr. Epstein funded, and allegations that Mr. Epstein
• 25:36
Speaker 1: and Jean-Luc Brunel, quote, deliberately engaged in a pattern of
• 25:40
Speaker 1: racketeering and involved luring minor children through MC Squared, mostly girls,
• 25:46
Speaker 1: under the age of 17, to engage in sexual play
• 25:49
Speaker 1: for money. The article further states that, quote, civil complaints
• 25:52
Speaker 1: allege that young girls from South America, Europe, and the
• 25:56
Speaker 1: former Soviet Republic few of whom spoke English, were recruited
• 26:00
Speaker 1: for Mr. Epstein's sexual pleasure. Do you recall having internal
• 26:04
Speaker 1: discussions about this article or the allegations it describes? Answer, no. Question,
• 26:09
Speaker 1: do you recall having internal discussions about the modeling agency MC2? Answer, no. Question,
• 26:15
Speaker 1: in a deposition in a class action against J.P. Morgan,
• 26:18
Speaker 1: you were asked whether you remembered hearing in a 2010
• 26:21
Speaker 1: about civil complaints that had been brought against Mr. Epstein.
• 26:25
Speaker 1: You testified that you did remember hearing that those lawsuits
• 26:29
Speaker 1: and that you discuss them with others at JP Morgan.
• 26:32
Speaker 1: So would you like to correct your answer? Answer, but
• 26:35
Speaker 1: you were asking whether I was aware of this article
• 26:38
Speaker 1: about MC squared, right? Question, I asked if you recalled
• 26:41
Speaker 1: having any internal discussion about this article or the allegations
• 26:44
Speaker 1: that it describes. Answer, or the allegations. Yeah, I may
• 26:48
Speaker 1: have had conversations about the allegations. Question, in your testimony
• 26:52
Speaker 1: is that class action again, you said you remembered hearing
• 26:56
Speaker 1: about these lawsuits. and you discussed them with others at J.P. Morgan.
• 27:01
Speaker 1: You also testified that, quote, it was terrible news, and
• 27:04
Speaker 1: it was shocking. Obviously, he lied to me. That's what
• 27:07
Speaker 1: I recall. When you testified that Mr. Epstein lied to you,
• 27:11
Speaker 1: what exactly did you believe he lied to you about? Answer,
• 27:15
Speaker 1: in 2006, he lied that he solicited underage prostitutes. Question,
• 27:20
Speaker 1: if you knew in 2010 that Mr. Epstein had lied
• 27:23
Speaker 1: to you about his victim's ages, and you thought that
• 27:25
Speaker 1: it was a terrible and shocking... As you said in
• 27:27
Speaker 1: your testimony, why did you continue to push for J.P.
• 27:31
Speaker 1: Morgan to keep Mr. Epstein as a client? Answer, I
• 27:35
Speaker 1: don't believe I pushed J.P. Morgan to keep Epstein as
• 27:37
Speaker 1: a client. And again, I was running a completely different
• 27:41
Speaker 1: part of the bank, was not involved in his accounts
• 27:44
Speaker 1: or his business at all with the bank. Question to
• 27:47
Speaker 1: be clear, you are saying that you did not believe
• 27:50
Speaker 1: that you pushed J.P. Morgan to keep Jeffrey Epstein as
• 27:53
Speaker 1: a client? Answer, that's correct. Question, I would like to
• 27:57
Speaker 1: introduce as Minority Exhibit U, an email chain between J.P.
• 28:01
Speaker 1: Morgan employees, including William Langford, Philip DeLuca, Nina Nichols, Mary
• 28:06
Speaker 1: Ann Ryan, and Arthur Middlemiss. From January 7th, 2011. Question.
• 28:14
Speaker 1: I believe the email chain starts on the last page.
• 28:17
Speaker 1: In the first email of the chain, Mr. Ryan sends Mr.
• 28:20
Speaker 1: DeLuca summary of a rapid response meeting on Mr. Epstein.
• 28:24
Speaker 1: In the third paragraph, she says, quote, Jeffrey is a
• 28:27
Speaker 1: friend of Jess S., and Catherine feels that PB, along
• 28:31
Speaker 1: with William, should meet with them to explain the HD
• 28:34
Speaker 1: project and explain the bank's recognition of the project and
• 28:37
Speaker 1: whether Epstein, it further exposed, could have potential serious impact. First,
• 28:42
Speaker 1: we understand that Catherine refers to Miss Keating, that William
• 28:46
Speaker 1: refers to William Langford, JP Morgan's director of anti-money laundering,
• 28:51
Speaker 1: that PB refers to private bank, and that HT project
• 28:54
Speaker 1: refers to human trafficking project. So, according to Ms. Ryan, Ms.
• 29:00
Speaker 1: Keating believed that she, along with Mr. Langford, needed to
• 29:03
Speaker 1: meet with you to explain J.P. Morgan's human trafficking project
• 29:06
Speaker 1: and the impact of Mr. Epstein's crimes, if further exposed,
• 29:10
Speaker 1: could have on the project, correct? Answer, yes. Question. Would
• 29:15
Speaker 1: you agree that this statement makes clear that at this
• 29:17
Speaker 1: point in early 2011, J.P. Morgan already suspected that Mr.
• 29:22
Speaker 1: Epstein was engaging in sex trafficking? Answer, yes. Question. Question.
• 29:27
Speaker 1: In the next paragraph, Ms. Ryan says, quote, Epstein was
• 29:30
Speaker 1: released in July from house arrest and the Palm Beach
• 29:33
Speaker 1: carried two articles saying DOJ may be investigating for child
• 29:37
Speaker 1: sex trafficking via a modeling agency's pardon. in. I think
• 29:41
Speaker 1: Catherine believes that after the briefing on HT that Jess
• 29:45
Speaker 1: would need to point blank ask Jeffrey the status of
• 29:48
Speaker 1: any criminal investigations. Did you ask Mr. Epstein about the
• 29:52
Speaker 1: status of any federal investigation into him? Answer, I don't recall. Question,
• 29:58
Speaker 1: You have no memory of asking Mr. Epstein in early
• 30:00
Speaker 1: 2011 about investigations into him? Specifically criminal investigations for sex trafficking? Answer,
• 30:07
Speaker 1: obviously I was aware of it. He was being investigated.
• 30:11
Speaker 1: I don't recall if I had specific conversations with him. Question, Ms.
• 30:14
Speaker 1: Ryan continues, quote, Catherine made sure that we knew that
• 30:18
Speaker 1: no one on today's call was in favor of having
• 30:20
Speaker 1: retained him as a client. Seems it's all due to
• 30:23
Speaker 1: Jess's personal relationship. Note, He has about $ 212 million in
• 30:27
Speaker 1: the bank. Would you agree that at this point, JP
• 30:30
Speaker 1: Morgan's retention of Mr. Epstein as a client was due
• 30:34
Speaker 1: to your personal relationship with him? Answer, no, I would not. Question,
• 30:38
Speaker 1: what was it due to? Answer, I think the bank
• 30:40
Speaker 1: had full authority to close his accounts and close his business.
• 30:44
Speaker 1: It wasn't up to me to make that decision. I
• 30:47
Speaker 1: was not involved in that decision. I wasn't in the
• 30:49
Speaker 1: rapid response team. I wasn't involved in any of the process.
• 30:53
Speaker 1: I knew Epstein, but I think the bank and the people...
• 30:56
Speaker 1: from Catherine Keating on down, had the authority to close
• 30:59
Speaker 1: the account and chose not to. But I think they
• 31:01
Speaker 1: significantly restricted its activities to the bank. Question you mentioned
• 31:06
Speaker 1: throughout this email, though multiple times by multiple people, clearly
• 31:10
Speaker 1: you are central to the entire decision. Sullivan, question, answer. Staley, no. Question,
• 31:18
Speaker 1: how can you say that you weren't involved in it?
• 31:20
Speaker 1: And if you weren't involved in it, why are so
• 31:22
Speaker 1: many people talking about how they have to talk to
• 31:24
Speaker 1: you About Mr. Epstein. Answer. In the meetings discussed. Discussing
• 31:30
Speaker 1: Epstein's accounts. Was I in the meetings with all the
• 31:33
Speaker 1: people that were listed? Question were you? Answer no. Question.
• 31:37
Speaker 1: In the last paragraph of the email. Ms. Ryan says quote.
• 31:41
Speaker 1: The one new concerning thing. Is the one article about
• 31:44
Speaker 1: the DOJ investigation. Is saying they brought underage girls to
• 31:47
Speaker 1: the US. Via a modeling agency MC squared. That's owned
• 31:51
Speaker 1: by a guy. Named Brunel. Turns out. The banker said today,
• 31:56
Speaker 1: we extended Epstein a loan in relation to the modeling agency.
• 31:59
Speaker 1: We believe she means MC squared. Would you agree that
• 32:03
Speaker 1: at this point in early 2011, JP Morgan had reason
• 32:06
Speaker 1: to believe that the bank had directly funded Mr. Epstein's
• 32:10
Speaker 1: sex trafficking operation? Answer again, I was not part of this.
• 32:14
Speaker 1: I was not part of the area of the bank
• 32:16
Speaker 1: any longer. So, you know, you know, I know to
• 32:19
Speaker 1: ask to tell me or tell you what the bank
• 32:22
Speaker 1: was thinking. It's more important you ask the bank. Question.
• 32:26
Speaker 1: At the bottom of the email, Ms. Ryan says, quote,
• 32:28
Speaker 1: bottom line, we need W to meet with Jess to
• 32:31
Speaker 1: explain HD, and then Jess could decide the next step.
• 32:35
Speaker 1: We understand that this means that Mr. Langford needs to
• 32:38
Speaker 1: meet with you and explain human trafficking, and then you
• 32:41
Speaker 1: can decide the next steps. As you've pointed out multiple times,
• 32:46
Speaker 1: you were the CEO of the investment banking division at
• 32:49
Speaker 1: this time, correct? Answer. Yeah, not the private bank. Question.
• 32:52
Speaker 1: So you did not have authority over asset management or
• 32:56
Speaker 1: the private bank, correct? Answer, that is correct. Question, so
• 33:01
Speaker 1: then why did J.P. Morgan's director of anti-money laundering, or
• 33:04
Speaker 1: anyone else for that matter, need to talk to you
• 33:07
Speaker 1: about Mr. Epstein? Answer, I think you should ask him. Question,
• 33:11
Speaker 1: why would all these people from different divisions at J.P.
• 33:13
Speaker 1: Morgan repeatedly talk about how they need to go to
• 33:16
Speaker 1: you to talk about Mr. Epstein, to explain human trafficking,
• 33:20
Speaker 1: if you don't have a significant role in the decision
• 33:22
Speaker 1: to to keep Epstein as a client? Answer, and I
• 33:27
Speaker 1: think you need to ask them, but I don't have
• 33:28
Speaker 1: a significant role in the decision to keep Epstein as
• 33:31
Speaker 1: a client. It's a completely different, completely different part of
• 33:36
Speaker 1: the bank. Question, I'm sorry? Answer, it was a completely
• 33:39
Speaker 1: different part of the bank than what I was responsible for. Question,
• 33:43
Speaker 1: I understand that. In the next email on the chain, Mr.
• 33:46
Speaker 1: DeLuca towards Ms. Ryan's email to Ms. Nichols, who is
• 33:50
Speaker 1: new on the team. He provides Ms. Nichols with some
• 33:53
Speaker 1: background information, including that Mr. Epstein, quote, is alleged to
• 33:57
Speaker 1: be involved in the human trafficking of young girls, and
• 34:00
Speaker 1: that Mr. Epstein, quote, is also an alleged personal associate
• 34:04
Speaker 1: of the CEO of investment bank Jess Daly. Do you
• 34:08
Speaker 1: agree that Mr. Epstein was a, quote, personal associate of yours?
• 34:12
Speaker 1: Answer again. As I've said, we had a professional relationship.
• 34:17
Speaker 1: We obviously knew each other. I would not call it
• 34:19
Speaker 1: a personal friendship. Question, I asked if you would agree
• 34:24
Speaker 1: that Mr. Epstein was a, quote, personal associate of yours. Answer,
• 34:27
Speaker 1: what does associate mean? Question, however you understand that word.
• 34:32
Speaker 1: Answer again, I think it was a relationship based on
• 34:35
Speaker 1: the business relationship that we had. I didn't view him
• 34:37
Speaker 1: as a personal friend. Question, Mr. Langford then asked the
• 34:41
Speaker 1: individual on the chain to pull prior emails and relevant
• 34:45
Speaker 1: press reports, quote, so we can get all the facts
• 34:47
Speaker 1: ASAP in advance of any meeting with Jess. The team
• 34:51
Speaker 1: then exchanges emails about compiling information. Did Mr. Langford and
• 34:56
Speaker 1: the management for the private bank meet with you at
• 34:58
Speaker 1: this point? Answer, I don't recall. Question, you have no
• 35:02
Speaker 1: recollection if they met with you and shared all the
• 35:04
Speaker 1: facts relevant to Mr. Epstein's sex trafficking operation that they're
• 35:08
Speaker 1: discussing compiling in advance of meeting with you? Answer, I don't. Question,
• 35:13
Speaker 1: and finally, the last email on the chain. Ms. Ryan
• 35:16
Speaker 1: explains that the renewed interest in Mr. Epstein was due
• 35:19
Speaker 1: to alerts for cash activity and that in talking to
• 35:23
Speaker 1: JP Morgan employees, she learned that, quote, PB was not
• 35:27
Speaker 1: so thrilled with retaining him. It was all due to Jess. Answer,
• 35:31
Speaker 1: that's not fair. Question, so you dispute her characterization? Answer, yes.
• 35:37
Speaker 1: All right, folks, we're going to wrap up right here.
• 35:39
Speaker 1: And in the next episode, we're going to pick up
• 35:41
Speaker 1: with question I'd like to introduce as Minority Exhibit V.
• 35:46
Speaker 1: All the information that goes with this episode can be
• 35:48
Speaker 1: found in the description box. What's up, everyone, and welcome
• 35:52
Speaker 1: to another episode of the Epstein Chronicles. In this episode,
• 35:56
Speaker 1: we're picking up where we left off with the Jeff
• 35:58
Speaker 1: Staley transcript from his trip to Congress. Question, if you're
• 36:02
Speaker 1: looking at the bottom of each page, on page six,
• 36:05
Speaker 1: there's an updated date, January 27th, 2011, that says, quote,
• 36:10
Speaker 1: a few news stories during 2010 connect Jeffrey Epstein to
• 36:13
Speaker 1: Heumann Sullivan jumps in, the lawyer. I want to make
• 36:17
Speaker 1: sure we know what we're reading, sorry. Redacted, if you
• 36:20
Speaker 1: look at the numbers at the bottom of the page,
• 36:22
Speaker 1: flip to page six, a little further down than halfway
• 36:25
Speaker 1: down the page. Sullivan, okay, thank you. Summary of findings. Question,
• 36:30
Speaker 1: it says, quote, a few news stories during 2010 connected
• 36:34
Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein to human trafficking. The coverage team, along with
• 36:38
Speaker 1: Catherine Keating and William Langford, all met to discuss the
• 36:41
Speaker 1: situation and agreed to enhance monitoring of and document discussion
• 36:45
Speaker 1: with the client. Jess Staley discussed the topic with Jeffrey Epstein,
• 36:49
Speaker 1: who replied that there was no truth to the allegations,
• 36:52
Speaker 1: no evidence, and was not expecting any problems. We'll continue
• 36:56
Speaker 1: to monitor the accounts and usage closely going forward. Answer,
• 37:01
Speaker 1: is that the same date where I said he was shaken? Answer, no,
• 37:04
Speaker 1: this is 11. Question, so the outcome of the meeting
• 37:07
Speaker 1: with Ms. Keating and Ms. Langford, which I understood that
• 37:11
Speaker 1: you do not recall. but that they are clearly, at
• 37:13
Speaker 1: least Mr. Langford, is emailing about, the outcome of this
• 37:17
Speaker 1: meeting appears to be that you would simply talk to Mr. Epstein.
• 37:21
Speaker 1: Do you remember whose idea that was? Answer, no. Question,
• 37:25
Speaker 1: do you remember why the idea was for you to
• 37:27
Speaker 1: talk to Mr. Epstein and not someone in risk or
• 37:30
Speaker 1: compliance or legal or even someone at the private bank?
• 37:34
Speaker 1: Answer again, by this time, I think the decision was
• 37:37
Speaker 1: ultimately in the hands of Steve Cutler. And you know
• 37:40
Speaker 1: the bank, you know, Langford and Catherine, and what not
• 37:43
Speaker 1: are doing their reviews, and I was in another part
• 37:45
Speaker 1: of the bank, so, question if the decision was in
• 37:49
Speaker 1: the hands, so he gets cut off now by Mr. Sullivan,
• 37:53
Speaker 1: please let him finish, I'm sorry, redacted, excuse me Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Sullivan,
• 37:58
Speaker 1: please let him finish, Staley, so confusing, the issue of
• 38:03
Speaker 1: me talking with Epstein about the accusations against him, is
• 38:06
Speaker 1: not the same thing, as a decision by the bank
• 38:08
Speaker 1: to keep him, as a banking client only, I think
• 38:11
Speaker 1: you're pushing the two together. Question, I don't think I am.
• 38:16
Speaker 1: The document says Jeff Staley discussed the topic with Jeffrey Epstein.
• 38:19
Speaker 1: So whatever role you say Mr. Cutler had isn't relevant
• 38:23
Speaker 1: to what I'm asking right now. I'm asking why the
• 38:26
Speaker 1: idea was for you to talk to Mr. Epstein as
• 38:28
Speaker 1: it says you did instead of someone even put Mr.
• 38:31
Speaker 1: Cutler aside, but instead of someone in risk or compliance
• 38:35
Speaker 1: or at the private bank. Because as you've pointed out
• 38:37
Speaker 1: multiple times, Staley interrupts him They may have. The person
• 38:43
Speaker 1: asking the questions, please don't interrupt me. As you've pointed
• 38:46
Speaker 1: out multiple times, you are CEO of the investment banking division.
• 38:50
Speaker 1: So why are you asking Mr. Epstein about these allegations? Answer,
• 38:54
Speaker 1: because I knew Epstein and I was asking about the allegations.
• 38:57
Speaker 1: But that's separate issue from the activities of the private
• 39:00
Speaker 1: bank and what they should do with Epstein. Question, so
• 39:04
Speaker 1: as they're reviewing his accounts, they're pulling you in because
• 39:08
Speaker 1: of your friendship with Mr. Epstein and asking you to
• 39:10
Speaker 1: talk to Mr. Epstein about the allegations against him? Answer again.
• 39:14
Speaker 1: And also in the document, we've talked about Steve Cutler
• 39:17
Speaker 1: basically controlling the decision of whether we keep Mr. Epstein
• 39:20
Speaker 1: as a client. He also had talked, also talked about
• 39:24
Speaker 1: that Epstein had, you know, relations with other employees of
• 39:27
Speaker 1: JP Morgan, not just me. question i understand that i'm
• 39:32
Speaker 1: not sure it answers my question setting aside who has
• 39:35
Speaker 1: the authority to terminate a client relationship with mr epstein
• 39:38
Speaker 1: is it your testimony today that the reason that you're
• 39:41
Speaker 1: talking to mr epstein about the allegations against him and
• 39:44
Speaker 1: the context is because he was your friend And so
• 39:48
Speaker 1: your colleagues at J.P. Morgan, who are tracking the issues
• 39:51
Speaker 1: with his accounts, are going to you and saying, please
• 39:53
Speaker 1: talk to him about these allegations against him. I'm trying
• 39:56
Speaker 1: to understand why it's you who's talking to him instead
• 40:00
Speaker 1: of people in other relevant divisions at J.P. Morgan. Answer,
• 40:04
Speaker 1: I think he was talking to other people at J.P. Morgan.
• 40:07
Speaker 1: Question maybe, but that's not what the document says. The
• 40:10
Speaker 1: document says Jess Staley discussed the topic with Jeffrey Epstein. Answer,
• 40:17
Speaker 1: you are saying, why is it you, as opposed to
• 40:19
Speaker 1: other people at Morgan? And I'm saying, I don't think
• 40:22
Speaker 1: it's as opposed to other people at Morgan. I think
• 40:25
Speaker 1: other people at Morgan had direct contact with him as well. Question,
• 40:28
Speaker 1: do you remember that? Other people at JP Morgan going
• 40:31
Speaker 1: to Mr. Epstein and asking him about the allegations? Answer, yes. Question, who? Answer,
• 40:37
Speaker 1: Mary Erdos. Question, anyone else? Answer, I believe Justin Nelson.
• 40:41
Speaker 1: And then Steve Cutler, I think, had conversations with Epstein's lawyers.
• 40:45
Speaker 1: I'm not sure whether the other lawyers were involved. Question,
• 40:49
Speaker 1: if these other people were talking to Mr. Epstein about
• 40:52
Speaker 1: the allegations against him, why do you think they are
• 40:54
Speaker 1: not mentioned in documents with the frequency that you are?
• 40:58
Speaker 1: Answer again, I didn't write the documents. Question, do you
• 41:01
Speaker 1: remember talking to Mr. Epstein about the allegations against him?
• 41:05
Speaker 1: The conversations that's referenced here? Answer, I remember the one
• 41:08
Speaker 1: conversation I had with him when I said he was
• 41:11
Speaker 1: very shaken and I think that was before this. but
• 41:15
Speaker 1: I don't know how the dates line up. Question. Well,
• 41:18
Speaker 1: this update is from January of 2011, so presumably it
• 41:22
Speaker 1: would have been in that month or close to it. Answer.
• 41:25
Speaker 1: And the date on my saying he was shaken was what? Question.
• 41:30
Speaker 1: I believe it was 2006. Answer. So long before. Okay. Question.
• 41:35
Speaker 1: So you have no recollection of the conversation that this
• 41:38
Speaker 1: document indicates you had with Mr. Epstein in 2011 about
• 41:41
Speaker 1: the allegations against him? Answer. No, I don't. Question. And
• 41:45
Speaker 1: you have no recollection of whose idea it was to
• 41:48
Speaker 1: have you have this conversation with Mr. Epstein? Answer again.
• 41:52
Speaker 1: I was in a completely different part of the bank.
• 41:54
Speaker 1: I don't. Question. Do you think that it made sense
• 41:58
Speaker 1: to ask a potential sex trafficker if he was engaging
• 42:01
Speaker 1: in sex trafficking? Answer. Ask the question again. Question. Do
• 42:05
Speaker 1: you think that it made sense to ask a potential
• 42:07
Speaker 1: sex trafficker if he was engaging in sex trafficking as
• 42:10
Speaker 1: a form of due diligence? Answer. It makes sense. Question.
• 42:14
Speaker 1: You testified that in 2010, you knew that Mr. Epstein
• 42:17
Speaker 1: had lied to you. Answer, yes. Question, so if you
• 42:20
Speaker 1: knew that he lied to you in 2010, why would
• 42:23
Speaker 1: it make sense to go to him in 2011 and
• 42:25
Speaker 1: ask him if he was engaging in sex trafficking? Answer again,
• 42:29
Speaker 1: the issue was 2006. We learned what he did. He
• 42:32
Speaker 1: pled guilty. He went to jail. He served his time.
• 42:36
Speaker 1: It was inconceivable to me that he would continue his
• 42:38
Speaker 1: sex trafficking after spending a year in jail. You're on
• 42:41
Speaker 1: work release. You know, it didn't make sense to me. Question,
• 42:45
Speaker 1: so even though you knew that he lied to you
• 42:47
Speaker 1: in 2006, you learned in 2010 that he lied to
• 42:50
Speaker 1: you in 2006. Even then, you thought it was inconceivable
• 42:54
Speaker 1: that he might lie to you again. And so having
• 42:57
Speaker 1: him go to him and ask him if he's engaging
• 43:00
Speaker 1: in sex trafficking is an adequate form of due diligence? Answer,
• 43:04
Speaker 1: an adequate form of due diligence would be the private
• 43:06
Speaker 1: bank engaging with him and doing its due diligence. That's
• 43:10
Speaker 1: the proper form of diligence. Question, I would like to
• 43:14
Speaker 1: introduce as Minority Exhibit W, an email exchange between you
• 43:17
Speaker 1: and Mr. Epstein dated March 20th, 2011. The Bates number
• 43:22
Speaker 1: is EFTA 00906898. In the first email, Mr. Epstein writes, quote,
• 43:31
Speaker 1: I'm working on getting Steve Cutler the comfort he needs,
• 43:33
Speaker 1: to which you respond, quote, agree? Was Mr. Cutler concerned
• 43:37
Speaker 1: about something related to Mr. Epstein? Answer, I think Steve
• 43:41
Speaker 1: Cutler had the ultimate decision as to whether we keep
• 43:43
Speaker 1: Epstein as a client. Also, I think around this time,
• 43:47
Speaker 1: Epstein hired a legal team, and I think the legal
• 43:49
Speaker 1: team was being set up, to meet with Cutler. Question,
• 43:52
Speaker 1: is that what Mr. Epstein was doing, to get Mr.
• 43:55
Speaker 1: Cutler the quote, comfort he needs? Answer, I think so. Question,
• 43:59
Speaker 1: I would like to introduce as Minority Exhibit X, an
• 44:02
Speaker 1: email chain, with you, Mr. Cutler, Ms. Erdos, James Condren,
• 44:08
Speaker 1: and Nina Schenker. dated July 19th, 2011, a few months
• 44:12
Speaker 1: after Mr. Epstein told you that he was working to
• 44:14
Speaker 1: get Mr. Cutler the comfort he needed. Question, in the
• 44:19
Speaker 1: most recent email, so at the top of the page, Mr.
• 44:21
Speaker 1: Cutler writes of Mr. Epstein, quote, this is not an
• 44:24
Speaker 1: honorable person in any way. He should not be a client.
• 44:28
Speaker 1: So you have said multiple times today that Mr. Cutler
• 44:31
Speaker 1: had the authority to terminate a client relationship, correct? Answer, yes. Question,
• 44:36
Speaker 1: if Mr. Cutler had that authority... Why didn't you use it? Answer,
• 44:40
Speaker 1: I don't know. Question, did you ever exert influence over Mr.
• 44:43
Speaker 1: Cutler to keep Mr. Epstein as a client? Answer, no. Question,
• 44:47
Speaker 1: you left J.P. Morgan in early 2013, correct? Answer, correct. Question,
• 44:52
Speaker 1: and then J.P. Morgan terminated its relationship with Mr. Epstein
• 44:55
Speaker 1: in the summer and fall of that year, correct? Answer, yes. Question,
• 45:00
Speaker 1: why do you think J.P. Morgan only removed Mr. Epstein
• 45:03
Speaker 1: as a client once you left the bank? Answer, I
• 45:06
Speaker 1: don't know. Question, do you think those two things are connected? Answer, no. Question,
• 45:11
Speaker 1: would you agree that Mr. Epstein had a vast network
• 45:14
Speaker 1: of people that was connected to an industries, including finance, politics, entertainment,
• 45:19
Speaker 1: and academia? Answer, yes. Question, would you agree that Mr.
• 45:23
Speaker 1: Epstein frequently leveraged those connections to broker meetings, share business intelligence,
• 45:28
Speaker 1: and trade favors? Answer, I'm not sure I'd say trade favors. Question, sure.
• 45:33
Speaker 1: Would you agree that Mr. Epstein... frequently leverage these connections
• 45:36
Speaker 1: to broker meetings and share business, share business intelligence? Answer,
• 45:41
Speaker 1: I think he brokered meetings with his network because of
• 45:44
Speaker 1: what he knew and his influence. Question, any shared business intelligence?
• 45:48
Speaker 1: Would you agree with that? Answer, I'm not quite sure
• 45:51
Speaker 1: what you mean, business intelligence, but you know, views about
• 45:54
Speaker 1: business or whatnot, yes. But if the implication is that
• 45:57
Speaker 1: he was using it to pass on non-public information, no. Question,
• 46:01
Speaker 1: you don't think he passed on non-public information? Answer, not
• 46:04
Speaker 1: that I'm aware of. Question, would you agree that Mr.
• 46:07
Speaker 1: Epstein used his vast network of people and the connections
• 46:10
Speaker 1: that he had to stay not just relevant but powerful
• 46:13
Speaker 1: despite being, excuse me, despite being a convicted sex offender? Answer,
• 46:18
Speaker 1: I think he kept a network that gave him a
• 46:20
Speaker 1: certain aura. I'm not sure I'd characterize it as power.
• 46:23
Speaker 1: I don't think he had power over anybody. Question, your
• 46:26
Speaker 1: attorney argued before the Financial Conduct Authority that, quote, Mr.
• 46:30
Speaker 1: Epstein traded... and influenced and relied on his network for legitimacy.
• 46:35
Speaker 1: Would you agree with that statement? Answer, yes. Question, did
• 46:38
Speaker 1: you ever share confidential information about J.P. Morgan with Jeffrey Epstein? Answer, yes. Question,
• 46:44
Speaker 1: did you ever share other confidential information with Epstein, so
• 46:48
Speaker 1: not necessarily related to J.P. Morgan? Answer, no. Question, and
• 46:52
Speaker 1: you previously, you are not aware of Mr. Epstein sharing
• 46:56
Speaker 1: your trading on information generally? Answer, that's correct. Question, so
• 47:00
Speaker 1: presumably you're not aware of Mr. Epstein sharing or trading
• 47:04
Speaker 1: on information that you gave him? Answer, correct. All right, folks,
• 47:07
Speaker 1: we're going to wrap up right here. And in the
• 47:09
Speaker 1: next episode dealing with the topic we're going to pick
• 47:11
Speaker 1: up with, question I would like to introduce as Minority
• 47:15
Speaker 1: Exhibit Y in email exchange. All the information that goes
• 47:19
Speaker 1: with this episode can be found in the description box.
