Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hey, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Isaiah chapter 45, Isaiah 45, and we're just
- 0:23going to start off quickly today.
- 0:26And chapter 45 and verse #1 says this.
- 0:28Yahweh says this to Cyrus, His anointed.
- 0:32That is the one that has been selected for a particular
- 0:35purpose. This would be a way that would
- 0:38often be used to talk about the kings of Israel.
- 0:41If you recall, the word for anointed in the Old Testament in
- 0:47Hebrew is Mashiac, where in the New Testament we get the word
- 0:51the Messiah, that Jesus is the ultimate anointed one, the
- 0:56ultimate king who rules. And here Cyrus is being talked
- 1:01about like he is one of the kings of Israel, one of those
- 1:04ones that is over God's people, that God selected.
- 1:07But here it's not for a Jewish individual.
- 1:11It is for a Medo Persian king and this would be 1 After
- 1:17Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has passed off the scene after even
- 1:21his son slash grandson have passed off the scene as we can
- 1:27hear about in Daniel chapter 5. If I remember some of my dates
- 1:32correctly or if I remember my Bible chapters correctly.
- 1:36So Cyrus is this 1. He is the king of the Medo
- 1:39Persian Empire. The the Babylonian Empire has
- 1:42passed off the scene. The Assyrian Empire before that
- 1:46has also passed off the scene now.
- 1:48And so the Medo Persians are in charge of the Middle East and
- 1:53God through a number of means, will have Cyrus be the one that
- 1:59gives the edict for the children of Israel to return back to
- 2:05their homeland. That they had been taken away
- 2:07from the homeland by Syria in 722 BC, that northern Kingdom of
- 2:13Israel and then the southern Kingdom of Judah was completely
- 2:17taken away in 586 BC. And so as that happens, about
- 2:2370, little over 70 years goes by Medo Persian Empire comes on the
- 2:28scene, and now God is sending Israel back.
- 2:30And He does this by means of this wicked Pagan king, that God
- 2:37has a plan and a purpose even for this person who does not
- 2:41know Yahweh. So he always says this to Cyrus
- 2:45his anointed, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations
- 2:50before him and disarm kings to open doors before him, and even
- 2:55city gates will not be shut. So here God had made it so that
- 3:00Cyrus would experience a lot of military might and success.
- 3:06This was done by the hand of God, but it was done for a
- 3:09specific purpose. It wasn't just so that Cyrus
- 3:11could himself be great. It was for the more ultimate
- 3:15purpose of bringing the ancestors of the Messiah back
- 3:20into the land. Says in verse #2 God saying this
- 3:24to Cyrus, I will go before you and level the uneven places.
- 3:30I'll shatter the bronze doors and cut the iron bars in two.
- 3:34I'll give you the treasures of darkness and riches from secret
- 3:37places, so that you may know that I am Yahweh.
- 3:41I am the God of Israel who calls you by your name.
- 3:44I call you by your name for the sake of my servant Jacob and
- 3:48Israel, my Chosen 1. I give a name to you, though you
- 3:51do not know me, so that all may know.
- 3:54From the rising of the sun to its setting.
- 3:56That's from, you know, where where the sun starts in the day
- 4:01to wherever it sets. It's saying basically all across
- 4:04the world that everyone would know that there is no one but
- 4:08me. I am Yahweh and there is no
- 4:10other. I form light and create
- 4:12darkness. I make success and create
- 4:15disaster. I am Yahweh who does all these
- 4:18things. That God is the one that brings
- 4:22each portion of life across. And sometimes He brings things
- 4:27in judgment, sometimes He brings things in blessings.
- 4:31He brings the good times of prosperity, and he brings the
- 4:35lean times in which we learn to call out to him.
- 4:39So God brings all of it. And so Cyrus needed to know who
- 4:44Yahweh was. And though God would use this
- 4:47king to accomplish his will, God's ultimate desire was that
- 4:51this king would know God personally, and he would know
- 4:56that he needed to worship and obey this God.
- 4:59Can I ask you, God knows you by name.
- 5:02God has a purpose for your life. God all throughout your
- 5:05existence is working His will in and through you.
- 5:10His greatest desire is that you would know who God is, that you
- 5:16would have a relationship with Him.
- 5:17Do you know God personally? If you do, are you telling other
- 5:22people about Him? Are you experiencing this
- 5:26day-to-day walk with God? In which we often fall and fail,
- 5:31we sin, but whenever we do that, we know that we have a safe home
- 5:37to run to in the grace of Jesus Christ.
- 5:40That because of the cost that He paid on the cross, we are able
- 5:45to come over and over again to the mercy seat of God and find
- 5:50grace to help in time of need. First, John 19A passage that we
- 5:56went through maybe a year or a little over a year ago on
- 6:01Tabernacle Talks says if we confess our sins, He is faithful
- 6:04and righteous to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all
- 6:08unrighteousness. And what a joy that that is.
- 6:12God continues here in verse #8 He says heavens sprinkle from
- 6:16above and let the skies shower righteousness.
- 6:20Let the earth open up so that salvation will sprout and
- 6:23righteousness will spring up with it.
- 6:25I, Yahweh, have created it. So God wants there to be right
- 6:30dealings with God and with man. He wants it to rain down from
- 6:34the sky. That if you will, there is rain
- 6:38showers of good treatment of man and God all across the world.
- 6:43That like flowers popping up over and over again, people
- 6:47would seek to do what is right and what is good in the sight of
- 6:51God and in love and care for others.
- 6:54There is however, a group of people that are against this,
- 7:00that they do not want to follow God's command, instead they want
- 7:03to follow their own way. And we read this in verse #9 woe
- 7:06to the one who argues with his Maker.
- 7:09One clay pot among many. Does clay say to the one forming
- 7:14it, What are you making? Or does your work say he has no
- 7:19hands? Woe to the one who says to his
- 7:22father, what are you fathering? Or to His mother, What are you
- 7:25giving birth to? This is what Yahweh, the Holy
- 7:28One of Israel and its Maker says.
- 7:31So we as the created cannot say to our Creator, why did you make
- 7:39me like this? You know, God, why did you make
- 7:41me so that I have brown hair instead of blonde hair?
- 7:46God, why did you make it so that I was born in the family that I
- 7:50was or that I am in the geographic location that I am?
- 7:55I can't complain about what God does with His stuff.
- 7:59He is the maker I am, if you will.
- 8:01I'm the maid, the MADE. He is the maker.
- 8:06He's the one who makes and I'm the thing that is made by Him so
- 8:11I don't get to complain about what God has created. 1
- 8:16encouragement and two encouragements to you in this
- 8:18number One, that means that your life has purpose and value far
- 8:25outside of anything that anyone else could say about you.
- 8:29It really at the end of the day, does not matter what anyone
- 8:32else's opinion is of your value, because God made you.
- 8:39He made you in His image and He is the one that specifically
- 8:43crafted and formed you and placed you into your lot in
- 8:49life. And so our response ought to be
- 8:53God. I am going to choose to know and
- 8:57love you with whatever life you have given me, and I'm going to
- 9:02choose to treat others rightly. That can be hard depending on
- 9:07the lot that you've been given in life.
- 9:09But I want you to know that that is the prerogative of God to
- 9:15when he's making stuff, he can make it how he likes it.
- 9:18It might not be what you want, but it is what is right and what
- 9:23is good in his eyes. So may we not be complaining
- 9:27clay pots saying to the Potter, Oh no, I really wanted to be a
- 9:32cup and you made me a bowl. That'd be stupid for direct clay
- 9:36pot to do that. But how often we do that to God?
- 9:38So we have worth and value. That also means other people
- 9:42have worth and value. So don't.
- 9:45Don't waste your time denigrating other people and
- 9:50insulting their intelligence. Don't waste your time insulting
- 9:54other people's looks. Don't insult people based on
- 9:58like where they're from, what their skin color is.
- 10:01Don't insult them based on, you know, even what their home life
- 10:05might have been like because God is the one that put all of those
- 10:09things together for them. And so our question as
- 10:13Christians needs to be, how do I love and care for this person?
- 10:19And what can I learn from them, from who they are, what their
- 10:24life experiences, how the Holy Spirit is working and moving in
- 10:27them like that needs to be our mindset of every other person is
- 10:33not just some obstacle that I need to overcome in my life.
- 10:38Every other person is a beautiful creation of God.
- 10:43And so I need to appreciate them, not denigrate them.
- 10:47Let's let's do that. Let's have that be our mindset.
- 10:50So God's saying, here you are the created things.
- 10:54You need to follow what God has said in the way to live.
- 10:59God says in the middle of verse 11, ask me what is to happen to
- 11:03my sons and instruct me about the work of my hands.
- 11:07I made the earth and created humans on it.
- 11:10It was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded
- 11:13everything in them. I've stirred him up in
- 11:16righteousness and will level all roads for him.
- 11:19He will rebuild my city and set my exiles free, not for a price
- 11:23or a bride, says Yahweh of heaven's armies.
- 11:26So God says I made Cyrus, and I made Cyrus for a purpose, and
- 11:31this purpose was for him to send the Israelites back to the land
- 11:36of promise and to rebuild there the city of Jerusalem.
- 11:40And you can read about that at length in Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 11:44And then there's a few of the minor prophets that also deal
- 11:47with that time period. Verse #14 This is what you
- 11:50always says. The products of Egypt and the
- 11:53merchandise of Kush and the Sabians, men of stature will
- 11:57come over to you and will be yours.
- 11:59They will follow you. They will come over in chains
- 12:02and bow down to you. They will confess to you.
- 12:04God is indeed with you and there is no other.
- 12:07There is no other God. Yes, you are a God who hides God
- 12:12of Israel Savior. All of them are put to shame,
- 12:16even humiliated. The makers of idols go in
- 12:19humiliation together. Israel will be saved by Yahweh
- 12:23with an everlasting salvation. You will not be put to shame or
- 12:27humiliated for all eternity. Now here one more time again,
- 12:31just because I want to make sure that we realize this, that we
- 12:34have our categories correct here.
- 12:36Here what's being said is not an ethnic group of people will all
- 12:44be saved, and there will be no one within this ethnicity that
- 12:49is apart from that choice of having to follow God now in the
- 12:56New Testament, believing in Christ in order to experience
- 13:00eternal salvation. Every single one, no matter
- 13:04every single person, no matter your ethnicity, does have to
- 13:08turn faith to Jesus Christ alone for salvation, calling on him as
- 13:13your Lord, the Messiah, the chosen one, the King that's in
- 13:15charge of you. And as we call on Jesus, we
- 13:20experience salvation. And so that in the New Testament
- 13:23is what the authors would call we're now the, if you will, the
- 13:27true Israel of God, a people that's not just an ethnic
- 13:31people, but we are those that have placed our faith and trust
- 13:35in Christ. And so every single one in
- 13:39Israel that would follow the Lord, that would put their faith
- 13:42in Jesus, whether in the past or in the future, every single one
- 13:46of those will never ever be put to shame or humiliated for all
- 13:50eternity. They will have this everlasting
- 13:53salvation. I just want to put that in
- 13:54there, even knowing some different theological groups and
- 14:01pastors and preachers that are around want to make it very
- 14:04clear that the salvation of God is reserved not for a particular
- 14:08ethnicity, but it is reserved for those that have placed their
- 14:11faith in Christ. And those are the true people of
- 14:14God. Verse #18 For this is what you
- 14:19always says, the Creator of the heavens, the God who formed the
- 14:22earth and made it, the one who established it, He did not
- 14:25create it to be a wasteland, but formed it to be inhabited.
- 14:30He says I am Yahweh and there is no other.
- 14:33I've not spoken in secret somewhere in the land of
- 14:35darkness. I did not say to the descendants
- 14:38of Jacob seek me in a wasteland. I am Yahweh who speaks
- 14:42righteously, who declares what is right.
- 14:44So God says I'm here for the flourishing of human life.
- 14:48I am not some God that you have to go out into the desert to
- 14:52find. Now when people found themselves
- 14:54out in the desert, desert of the wastelands, like Moses, like
- 14:57Jesus in the wilderness, like even the Apostle Paul after he
- 15:01left Damascus, in all of those instances, God can be with
- 15:06people in the desert and what a joy that that is.
- 15:09But God here is not opposed to human existence and communities
- 15:16and that God went into Egypt and, you know, Pharaoh's house
- 15:22and the land of Goshen and spoke to the people that were there,
- 15:26or all the time that Israel was in the land of promise, that God
- 15:30used the prophets and spoke to them.
- 15:32And so God here says, my goal for humanity's existence is not
- 15:38for the destruction of humanity, but for its flourishing even
- 15:43within communities. And so here, it wouldn't shock
- 15:48me if part of why this is tied together with Cyrus is for
- 15:52people that would have opposition to say, well, what?
- 15:56Why should we think that God has actually told Cyrus to have this
- 16:00thing happen? Should we go back to the land of
- 16:02promise because you know, Cyrus didn't go off to Mount Sinai and
- 16:07receive commandments from God? Again, you got to think the
- 16:10Exodus type language and the Exodus mindset that's here is
- 16:15from the land of exile, formerly Egypt, now Babylon, Medo Persia,
- 16:21into the land of promise. And so people could say, well,
- 16:24why should we trust what Cyrus says when he says, all right,
- 16:28Jews, Israelites, I need you to go back into this land, the land
- 16:33of Canaan. Why should we do that?
- 16:36And here God says, I made land not to be an abandoned
- 16:40wasteland. I made it to be inhabited, and
- 16:43so I can give an instruction to someone, even if it's not in
- 16:47Mount Sinai or whatever. And I want the land that I named
- 16:52for myself to have inhabitants. And so I believe that that's
- 16:57where that particular line is being drawn to at this point.
- 17:02Verse #20 At the end of the chapter here, come, gather
- 17:07together and approach you, fugitives of the nations, those
- 17:10who carry their wooden idols and pray to a God who cannot save,
- 17:14have no knowledge. Speak up and present your case.
- 17:18Yes, let them consult together. Who predicted it long ago?
- 17:22Who announced it from ancient times?
- 17:24Was it not I, Yahweh? There is no other God but me, a
- 17:28righteous God and Savior. There is no one except me.
- 17:32Turn to me and be saved all the ends of the earth, for I am God,
- 17:38and there is no other I love there.
- 17:40In verse #22 God makes it clear that His salvation is not just
- 17:45for Israel and this one random Medo Persian king.
- 17:48God's salvation is for everyone, for all peoples, for whoever
- 17:53will turn in faith to him. This echoes the sentiment of
- 17:55Romans 10/13. For whosoever shall call upon
- 17:58the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 18:01Verse #23 By myself God says, I have sworn.
- 18:05Truth has gone from my mouth. A word that will not be revoked.
- 18:09Every me will bow to me. Every tongue will swear
- 18:13allegiance. It will be said about me.
- 18:15Righteousness and strength are found only in Yahweh.
- 18:19All who are enraged against him will come to him and be put to
- 18:22shame. All the descendants of Israel
- 18:25will be justified and boast in Yahweh.
- 18:29Even there in the end part of verse #23 this word that goes
- 18:33out from the mouth of God, every knee will bow to me, every
- 18:36tongue will swear. Allegiance is certainly on the
- 18:40mind of the apostle Paul when he tells the church at Philippi in
- 18:45Philippians 2 and verses 9 through 11.
- 18:49He says for this reason God has highly exalted him Jesus, and
- 18:53has given him the name that is above every name, so that at the
- 18:56name of Jesus every knee will bow in heaven and on earth and
- 19:00under the earth, and every tongue will confess that Jesus
- 19:04Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 19:08So here God says, every knee will bow to me.
- 19:11And then Paul echoes this thought, saying, And Jesus, is
- 19:15that me, that our triune Godfather, Son and Spirit, that
- 19:20as every knee is bowed and every tongue confesses God's lordship,
- 19:27the human recipient of this declaration of allegiance is
- 19:33Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Son of man, and he is worthy
- 19:40of all of our worship. Want to ask you today, one day
- 19:45you are going to, with every other created thing, bow the
- 19:51knee and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
- 19:54Today in your life, in your workplace, in your family, with
- 19:58your friends, with your church, will you confess that Jesus is
- 20:02Lord? Will you allow him to call the
- 20:05shots in your life? And will you bow to Him?
- 20:08Bow in prayer, bow in worship, bow in sacrifice.
- 20:11Because He is this good God, the God that loves humanity, the one
- 20:16that is seeking not our destruction, but our benefit.
- 20:19He is the one that fulfills His promises.
- 20:21He is the one that gives everlasting salvation.
- 20:24He's the one that cares about those that do not even yet know
- 20:28Him. And yet He is providing for
- 20:30their needs. He is guiding them step by step
- 20:32so that they would come to know Him.
- 20:36Will you tell someone about Him today?
- 20:40I love just so many of the thoughts that come from Isaiah
- 20:4345. And I think even of, you know,
- 20:47my own background and what a joy it was to me when I realized
- 20:54that because I've called on the name of the Lord to be saved, I
- 21:00did it when I was like 9 years old because I asked Jesus to be
- 21:05my Savior. I realize, even looking back at
- 21:10Isaiah 45, that God loved Cyrus long before Cyrus ever knew God.
- 21:16And God loved me long before I ever knew him.
- 21:20And he pursued me. John would tell us in in one of
- 21:24his epistles that we love God because he first loved us.
- 21:29And so my friend, God loves you. He is pursuing you.
- 21:32If you've never turned over the keys of your life to him, do
- 21:35that today. It's the best decision you could
- 21:37ever make. Thank you for tuning into this
