- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Happy Friday.
- 0:03I'm so excited that we're going into the weekend and I pray you
- 0:07are feeling strong and have just had the best week.
- 0:11I'm super excited for what we're diving into today and I'm really
- 0:15glad you're here. Today's passage, it's on the
- 0:18shorter end, but it does carry a lot of weight and it's one of
- 0:23those that's just very crisp and to the point.
- 0:26It's direct and I think it is a good challenge for us on how we
- 0:31approach our faith, our belief, and what we're actually looking
- 0:36for from God. So let's get right into it.
- 0:39We're going to be in Matthew chapter 16 verses one through 4.
- 0:45The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by
- 0:49asking Him to show them a sign from heaven.
- 0:52He replied, When evening comes, you say it will be fair weather,
- 0:57for the sky is red, and in the morning today it will be stormy,
- 1:02for the sky is red and overcast. You know how to interpret the
- 1:06appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of
- 1:10the times. A wicked and adulterous
- 1:12generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the
- 1:17sign of Jonah. Jesus then left them and went
- 1:20away. OK, so to fully grasp what's
- 1:25happening here, I think it's good to get a little background.
- 1:29I did some research more into the Pharisees and Sadducees and
- 1:33looked at some commentary so that I could bring that to y'all
- 1:36for better understanding. But basically, what's happening
- 1:39here, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, they're coming to
- 1:42Jesus. They're asking him for a sign
- 1:44from heaven. And normally these two groups
- 1:47are in opposition. They do not like each other.
- 1:51The Pharisees I touched on in a brief in a episode prior to
- 1:56this, very briefly, but they are religiously focused.
- 2:00So they care a lot about rules and traditions and their
- 2:05appearance from the outside. And Jesus had called them
- 2:08hypocrites because they could not even live up to what their
- 2:12own standards were. They could not practice what
- 2:15they were preaching. But the Sadducees, on the other
- 2:18hand, they're more politically focused, so they value logic
- 2:23over faith, and they did not put as much emphasis and weight on
- 2:28the supernatural. So these are two different
- 2:31groups. But The thing is, they had a
- 2:33common enemy in Jesus. Jesus and his truth threatened
- 2:37both of their ideologies. So they come together, they
- 2:41become allies, not because they agreed, but they both wanted to
- 2:46get rid of him. So they had already dismissed
- 2:50Jesus's miracles as either coincidence or they had claimed
- 2:55that he was doing them through evil powers and practices, and
- 2:59this was because in their minds only God could do supernatural
- 3:03signs from heaven. But the funny and sad part is
- 3:08that they completely missed the point that Jesus was the Son of
- 3:12God and that he could do all these things.
- 3:15And so their issue, it wasn't their lack of evidence or signs,
- 3:19it was their heart and hearts that caused them to have
- 3:23stubbornness and pride. And This is why they just
- 3:27completely missed it. So Jesus response, he's pointing
- 3:31out something I think is really interesting.
- 3:34Interesting. He tells them that they can look
- 3:37at the sky, they can act accurately predict the weather,
- 3:41but they are completely missing the clear signs of who he is and
- 3:46why he is on the earth. And so in other words, layman's
- 3:49terms, you're really great at reading the forecast, but you're
- 3:54blind to the truth that is literally right in front of you.
- 3:58And so then he touches on the sign of Jonah, and this is
- 4:01actually super cool. So Jonah being thrown into the
- 4:05sea, this is pointing to Jesus's death.
- 4:09Jonah being in the fish for three days, this is pointing to
- 4:12his burial. And then Jonah being spit out
- 4:15onto land, this is pointing to Jesus's resurrection on land
- 4:20after three days. That was the sign that he's
- 4:23referring to in this passage. And so Jesus refuses to give
- 4:28them anything more because he knows deep down, like he knows
- 4:32that they've already decided they're not going to believe
- 4:35him. And even a miracle or a sign
- 4:37would not change this. So right after this, the passage
- 4:42directly following, I'm not going to read it just for the
- 4:45sake of time, but Jesus is warning his disciples to be on
- 4:49their guard. He is telling them that there's
- 4:53going to be more false teachings to come, but specifically here
- 4:57with the Pharisees and Sadducees.
- 4:59And I think that this is because he's really trying to harp on
- 5:05lack of faith. It is contagious.
- 5:08And so for us, just a direct application, we need to be
- 5:12really wise about who we're listening to, who we're letting
- 5:17speak into us and who we spend our time with, who are our
- 5:21surroundings. And so here's the thing, we
- 5:26actually have so much evidence, guys, so much evidence as Jesus
- 5:30says, the Messiah. And it's easy to say that, but I
- 5:33really just want to touch on some things that we have to put
- 5:38it into perspective. The Old and the New Testament
- 5:41complete records. We have miracles then and we
- 5:45have miracles today. There are so many personal
- 5:48testimonies. We have over 2000 years of
- 5:53complete church history. There are fulfilled prophecies
- 5:57that have unfolded and are continuing to unfold in our very
- 6:01moment. But there's a line that is
- 6:04drawn. God can save anyone and soften
- 6:07any heart. Yes, I fully believe that.
- 6:10But people also must be willing to accept the truth.
- 6:14And The thing is that our belief, it's rooted in faith.
- 6:18Miracles don't convince someone who has already convinced
- 6:21themselves that they're right. In Jesus, he talks about, he
- 6:26says blessed are those who have not seen and yet still, yet
- 6:30still believe. This is in John 2029.
- 6:34And then we look at Hebrews 11/1 and he's saying in the Passion
- 6:38translation, I really love this translation.
- 6:41Now faith brings our hopes into reality and becomes the
- 6:45foundation needed to acquire the things we long for.
- 6:50It is all the evidence required to prove what is still unseen.
- 6:55Boom that is so clear and written.
- 7:00God still performs miracles today.
- 7:03I believe He confirms things for His people.
- 7:05I've experienced that personally.
- 7:07I'm not going to go into all the details of that right now, but
- 7:10those signs are not the basis of our faith.
- 7:14And so I want to end with a few things that the timing of this
- 7:19is crazy. I was on my Instagram, my
- 7:22limited time screen time scroll last night of Reels, and I
- 7:27actually came across this one that really just captivated my
- 7:32attention. And I did some further research
- 7:34into them, but I want to lay them out for you because it's
- 7:38amazing. Your spine, it has 33 vertebrae.
- 7:42And Jesus lived on the earth for 33 years.
- 7:45So the structure that is physically holding you up,
- 7:49helping you stand, helping you sit, it reflects the years that
- 7:53he was held here for us. OK another one, your DNA
- 7:57chromosomes, did y'all know that they're actually held together
- 8:01in a cross shaped structure? OK here is the last one.
- 8:05I'm going to give you your blood cells.
- 8:08They often appear with crown like patterns.
- 8:11Y'all this is reminding us of the crown of thorns that he wore
- 8:14on his head that pierced his skull that poured out his blood.
- 8:20God is in every detail. You do not need more signs.
- 8:26So here's the reflection. Maybe ask yourself right now,
- 8:31because this is something that I was reflecting on just a few of
- 8:35these questions. Are you doubting God right now?
- 8:39Maybe it's for healing or provision or deliverance.
- 8:42Have you already given up in your mind?
- 8:45Are you waiting for God to prove Himself before you choose to
- 8:49believe? Do you trust the truth of His
- 8:53word that it is real, that it is alive and it's pointing to His
- 8:57return? Y'all, these are, it's a lot,
- 9:01it's a lot to take in, but it is so important for us to think
- 9:05about. So I am going to go and close in
- 9:08prayer. So bow your heads or whatever
- 9:11you're doing. Just think about these words for
- 9:14a second. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 9:18that you are not unclear. It says in your word, you are
- 9:24not a God of confusion, but of peace.
- 9:27And so would you forgive us for times that we have demanded
- 9:30proof? Instead of choosing to trust you
- 9:35when our pride or doubt has taken root, would you just let
- 9:40that disintegrate and soften our hearts?
- 9:44Would you help us and teach us to walk by faith, not by sight,
- 9:49and to believe that you're present and you're faithful in
- 9:52every single detail of our lives?
- 9:55Would you strengthen our belief and help guard our hearts?
- 9:58I pray that we would draw closer to you and as we draw closer to
- 10:02you, that you would draw closer to us.
- 10:04As your word says, we ask this all in your name, Jesus.
- 10:08Amen. OK, so that is Friday's episode.
- 10:13I'm praying for y'all as you finish out the week and go into
- 10:16the weekend and I will see y'all in the next one.
