- 0:51Speaker 1: A Hey, y'all, welcome this week's show. Today we'll continue
- 1:03to discuss the sacrament of confession, or reconciliation or penance.
- 1:08You know, it goes by all three names. These days
- 1:10more called the sacrament of reconciliation, but it's the same thing.
- 1:15Before the und we get we'll get some questions and
- 1:18answers from a Protestant about the Blessed Virgin Mary, and
- 1:23this from the Classic Work radio replies, I tell you
- 1:26you can guarantee you can count on one thing. Protestants
- 1:30hate Jesus's mother. I don't know why when I say
- 1:37that there is an element of demonic influence in all
- 1:43Protestant teaching, in every Protestant church. Just mention the blessed
- 1:49Virgin Mary. Say it in those terms, blessed Virgin Mary,
- 1:53and watch them become fully possessed. Nine out of ten
- 2:00we'll start essentially hair on fire, doing backflip, screaming at
- 2:06the top of their lungs. They hate Jesus's mother. There's
- 2:11no rational reason they should. I mean, if someone insults
- 2:16your mother, are you gonna be happy with them? Your
- 2:19earthly mother just walks up to you and you know,
- 2:23calls her some horrible name. You're gonna get angry. What
- 2:27you want to bet Jesus doesn't really like him when
- 2:28people would disrespect his mother, And yet they do it,
- 2:34and they get really they laugh and sneer and make
- 2:39all kinds of insults. And meanwhile they say they only
- 2:44believe what's in the Bible. And there's not a negative
- 2:46comment about the blessed Virgin Mary in the entire Bible.
- 2:50Quite the contrary. So what is that If it's not
- 2:54satanic possession, demonic possession on some level, what is that?
- 3:01I mean, they act like the devil. I don't know. Anyway,
- 3:08The person says, why call Mary a virgin seeing that
- 3:12she was a mother? The linking of these two terms
- 3:14as an insult to reason, and they answer the assertion
- 3:19that an omnipotent God is limited by natural laws, which
- 3:23he himself established as an insult to reason. Jesus, the
- 3:26child of Mary was conceived miraculously without the intervention of
- 3:30a human father, and was born miraculously, Mary's virginity being
- 3:34preserved throughout. I do not claim that any natural laws
- 3:37were responsible for this event. I claim that God was responsible.
- 3:41And the only way you can show that the doctor
- 3:43is not reasonable is by proving that there is no
- 3:46God or that he could not do what Catholic doctrine asserts.
- 3:51The person says, where does it say in scripture that
- 3:54Mary was ever a virgin? And they answer, Isaiah the
- 3:57prophet seven fourteen certainly predict the supernatural and extraordinary birth
- 4:01of the Messiah. And he wrote the Lord himself, or
- 4:04to give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive
- 4:07and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel.
- 4:11Sing Luke says, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God
- 4:14to a virgin, and the virgin's name was Mary. When
- 4:17Mary was offered the dignity of becoming the mother of
- 4:20the Messiah, a privilege to which any Jewish maiden would
- 4:23ordinarily look forward to with eager desire, she urged against
- 4:26the prospect, the fact that she had no intention of motherhood.
- 4:32How shall this be done? Because I know not man.
- 4:35She does not refer to the past, but by using
- 4:37the present tense indicates that her present, that is her
- 4:42present and preserving intention. The Angel assured her that her
- 4:46child would be due to the miraculous operation of the
- 4:48Holy Spirit, and that she would not be asked to
- 4:50forfeit the virginity she prized so highly, and then only
- 4:55did she consent Luke one twenty six or thirty eight.
- 4:58When Jesus was born, had none of the sufferings usually
- 5:01associated with childbirth. Yeah, that's why I got a big
- 5:04issue with most Christian movies and television that showed the
- 5:09blessed virgin Mary and having labor pains, that the Chosen
- 5:15series and such is actually pretty heretical and not Catholic
- 5:21at all. When Jesus was born, Mary had none of
- 5:24the suffering usually associated childbirth. The child was born miraculously.
- 5:28Mary herself in no way incapacitated. She herself attended to
- 5:33her own needs and those of her child. She brought
- 5:35Firth to Fourth, her firstborn son, and wrapped him in
- 5:39swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger. Luke two
- 5:41to seven person says, did not marry to cloak her
- 5:46own sin. Persuade Saint Joseph that her child was with
- 5:49the Holy Ghost, answered No, that is absolutely false. Mary,
- 5:53saluted by an angels full of grace, was the purest
- 5:56and holiest woman who ever lived on earth, and as
- 5:58a matter of fact, was blind confidence in God. Mary
- 6:01refrained from explaining the event to Saint Joseph, leaving all
- 6:05to God. As Saint Matthew tells us, behold, the Angel
- 6:09of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying
- 6:11Joseph's said of David, fear not to take unto thee
- 6:14marry thy wife, for that which is conceived of her
- 6:17as of the Holy Ghost. What you suggest has been
- 6:20said by certain people merely because the Catholic Church honors Mary.
- 6:24Their hatred of the Catholic Church is so great that
- 6:27they dislike all she loves and are willing to overlook
- 6:30any injury to Christ in fostering their hatred. Yet how
- 6:35can they hope to please God by dishonoring his mother.
- 6:39Every true child bitterly resents disrespect to his mother, And
- 6:42Christ was the best son who ever lived. The more
- 6:45we honor Mary, the more we honor Christ. For the
- 6:49honor we show her is because of Christ. If He
- 6:52were not the central figure, Mary would have been forgotten
- 6:55long ago. And we'll wrap it up there. I mean,
- 7:02he goes on, for he'll ask several more questions. And
- 7:05you know it's good to hear these questions and hear
- 7:09the answers, because you even though that book was written,
- 7:13oh about one hundred years ago. Yeah, Radio Replies was
- 7:17written in the nineteen twenties. Unfortunately, if anything, Protestants are
- 7:23more ignorant now than they were then, and less literate,
- 7:26less knowledgeable of history, and many for far more fanatical
- 7:33and ignorant in their hatred of the Catholic Church. And
- 7:39you know, I just barely converted to Catholicism. Somebody saw
- 7:42my crucifix and said, why do Catholics worship Jesus's mother
- 7:46and not Jesus? And like they don't, Yes, they do.
- 7:49I know this, and I've seen that and tried to
- 7:53very calmly, very rationally explain Mary and doctrine and this
- 8:00otherwise polite, even tempered lady, middle aged lady who was
- 8:09active in the community and charitable aspects, and one of
- 8:16the heads of the County Republican Party and you know,
- 8:20civics and all that stuff, turned into a raging lunatic
- 8:25before my eyes. And I think that may be when
- 8:30I began to understand that there is actually a demonic
- 8:34influence in Protestantism, even among you know, otherwise very devout people,
- 8:42people that would be glad to tell you about Jesus
- 8:45and read the Bible to you and pray, pray for
- 8:48you and all that they something comes over them, red
- 8:54in the face, spitting, sputtering, cussing, raving like lunatics at
- 8:59the very e of the blessed Virgin Mary, or when
- 9:02they see your crucifix. It's really, there's no, it's not rational.
- 9:11And if it's not rational, what is it? Well, obviously
- 9:14it's irrational. Well you know, Satan, the father of lies,
- 9:18is the one opposed to all reason and rationality there is,
- 9:24like it or not, whether it's Baptist or Presbyterian, or
- 9:27Methodist or seven Ay Adventister, Pentecostal or Anglican or Episcopal
- 9:32or Lutheran or Grace Chapel down the street, non denominational,
- 9:39no matter how Bible believing and Bible studying and so
- 9:46called born again because they actually can't be born again
- 9:49unless they're born of both water and the blood. But
- 9:53you know, they don't receive the Eucharists hopefully they've been baptized, hopefully,
- 9:58but they say they're born again, which makes no sense
- 10:02against taking the Bible out of context. No matter how
- 10:05devout these people may claim to be and believe they are.
- 10:09There is a satanic influence when you mention, as the
- 10:14fathers just said, the most holy woman to ever walk
- 10:17the face of the earth, the Mother of God, and
- 10:20they react with demonic mockery and rage that cannot be
- 10:25of God. There is a serious problem, and I mean
- 10:31there is a serious problem. And you know today's today's scripture,
- 10:36today's Gospel and the mass readings was Jesus said, Many
- 10:39will say to me, Lord Lord, did we not dine
- 10:42with you? Did we cast out demons in your name? Etcetera, etcetera.
- 10:45And he will say, truly, I do not know you.
- 10:48Be gone from me, evildoers. There will be many people
- 10:54who believe in God, who have faith in Jesus. Faith
- 10:58alone is not enough. Faith plus works is what the
- 11:02Bible actually says. Of course, Martin Luther changed that to
- 11:05suit his own heretical doctrine. What are those works? Those
- 11:09works are being charitable, being obedient, and receiving the sacraments,
- 11:16as well as anything you might do for the least
- 11:19of these. Faith alone is not enough to get you
- 11:22into Heaven. You're not going to be saved on faith alone.
- 11:26Salvation comes through the Holy Catholic Church and to whatever extent.
- 11:31Protestants agree with the Catholic Church, that's going to be
- 11:34their chance. But a faithful Christian who hates the Mother
- 11:39of Jesus is going to have a rude awakenings. I
- 11:47don't understand it. I mean, honestly, I mean I was
- 11:49born and raised Protestant, you know, I mean, I guess
- 11:52I was a born Protestant, but I was raised Protestant.
- 11:55No one ever taught me to have any kind of
- 11:59negative feeling against the Blessed Virgin Mary. If anything, she
- 12:02was honored and respected. And then something happened, It seems
- 12:08to have happened, especially in the last couple of decades. Suddenly,
- 12:15well maybe it was zero all along. Maybe once I
- 12:18became Catholic and people would see me praying a Rosary
- 12:21or see me wearing a crucifix, the pure evil hatred
- 12:28began to arise from friends, people who called NEI their friend,
- 12:34from family, from strangers, from you know, girls I would
- 12:42date who said, you know, well, for instance, one was
- 12:48Presbyterian and she said, you know, she would join the
- 12:52Catholic Church if we got married, and we were really serious.
- 12:56We were engaged for a time, and then suddenly disrage
- 13:03and anger against the Catholic Church came out, and she said,
- 13:06by no means would she ever convert Catholicism, by no
- 13:10means would she ever allow her children to be raised Catholic.
- 13:13And I went, I mean with her arguments and complaints,
- 13:16I said, grab the Bible. Pick up the Bible. It's
- 13:19go point by point. And I disproved everything, all of
- 13:22her fallacies, all of her things she believed to get
- 13:28about the Catholic Church. And at the end she had
- 13:32to admit what I was saying was in agreement with
- 13:35the Bible. But she said, never would she allow her
- 13:38children to be raised Catholic, that they would sit on
- 13:40the same pew as their grandparents in the Presbyterian Church.
- 13:43And that was the end of the relationship. You know.
- 13:48I was also engaged several years later, almost a decade later,
- 13:52to the most beautiful, wonderful, intelligent Mormon girl you can imagine,
- 13:58and shesolutely embraced the Catholic Church until her parents found
- 14:03out and she disappeared. Literally she said, I may have
- 14:09to go away for a while, and I'm like what,
- 14:12And the next day she was gone, like gone. To
- 14:17this day, don't know if they I presumably took her
- 14:22against her will, and I've never been able to find her.
- 14:28I did finally find out that she was safe in
- 14:31living with her sister, but nobody in her family would
- 14:34talk to me. They would not even tell me if
- 14:36she was alive or dead. When they found out that
- 14:39she was going to marry a Catholic and convert to Catholicism,
- 14:43she disappeared. She didn't show up for work the next day.
- 14:48Her friends didn't know where she was, the people she
- 14:51had gone to high school with and a little bit
- 14:53of college, you know, her coworkers, her best friends had
- 14:59no idea deal where she was, and her family would
- 15:02not speak to me in person or answer the phone
- 15:05or answer an email. I don't know what happened there,
- 15:11but yeah, when I became a Catholic, I had I
- 15:17had no idea of true anti Catholic bigotry until I
- 15:22became Catholic, and then it, you know, it hits you
- 15:25on a weekly basis, you know, whether it's in person
- 15:28or online. Especially online. People are vicious online because they
- 15:31know there's not gonna bey consequences. I mean, I'm a
- 15:34you know, six foot four two and twenty pound guy
- 15:36with a big hunting knife on my belt. Most days,
- 15:39very few people really want to get in my face aggressively.
- 15:43I mean women are the worst. Actually, they know you're
- 15:47not going to hit them, because a Southern man doesn't
- 15:49hit a lady, so they'll get really vicious. But most
- 15:52guys will not get in my face. But online, it's
- 15:57like an old friend of mine said, you get called
- 15:59everything but a child of God. Well, anyway, let's look
- 16:04to continue with the sacrament of the reconciliation. And we're
- 16:08talking now about the confessor the priest. No priest can
- 16:13give absolution who has not received the faculties for hearing
- 16:16confession from the bishop of his diocese, to none of
- 16:20the apostles and to their successors. Dear Lord, give the
- 16:23power forgive sins to them alone. Did he say, after
- 16:28his resurrection, receive you the Holy Ghost. Who sins you
- 16:31shall forgive, they are forgiven. And those who sins you
- 16:35shall retain, They are retained. That's the Gospel of John,
- 16:38chapter twenty, verse twenty three. Write that down. I have
- 16:43yet to meet a Protestant who has ever apparently even
- 16:48read that verse. That reminds me of the Presbyterian girl.
- 16:53She was so upset that I would go to a
- 16:55priest for confession. You have to go to God alone.
- 16:57A man can't forgive your sins. I said, hand me
- 17:00the Bible. Let's go to the chapter of John. I
- 17:03read it to her. She didn't believe it. I put
- 17:05the Bible in her hand and asked her to read
- 17:07it to me. She said she had never heard that
- 17:09verse of the Bible in her entire life. Now, how
- 17:12is that the case. It's in a Protestant Bible. It's
- 17:16in both the Catholic and Protestant Bible. They don't teach
- 17:20it in Sunday School, and when Protestants read it, I
- 17:24guess they have a tendency to kind of skip over it. Recently,
- 17:30I think I mentioned this before. A lady with a
- 17:34PhD gotten a debate with me online, and I quoted
- 17:40that and once she denied it it was in the Bible,
- 17:43and then I proved it was in the Bible, and
- 17:45she said, well, that means it's like the Lord's prayer
- 17:47forgive us as we are trespassed, as we forgive those
- 17:50trespassing anstas. I said, wait a minute, you're an educator
- 17:54with a PhD. Go back to third grade. Tell me
- 17:57how you can diagram that sentence in a way to
- 18:00make it fit the meaning you're trying to assign to it.
- 18:03That was the end of the conversation. She knew that
- 18:06the Bible taught something absolutely opposite of what she believed.
- 18:11That was the end of the conversation. Right down, John
- 18:14twenty John, Chapter twenty, verse twenty three, John twenty twenty three. Anyway,
- 18:20he commanded the apostles to loose the bands of Lazarus
- 18:23after he had risen him from the grave, to indicate
- 18:26to them that the grave no to indicate to them.
- 18:31Let's try it again. He commanded the apostles to loose
- 18:35the bands of Lazarus after he had risen from the
- 18:38grave to indicate to them. Was given the power to unbind.
- 18:43It's a hard sentence. The power is called the power
- 18:47of the keys, because it is the gates of heaven
- 18:50closed against the center are reopened to him. Thus the
- 18:53confessor is the doorkeeper of heaven. The bishops can confer
- 18:57the right to forgive sins to such pre as a
- 19:01deem fitted to hear confession a priest's a rule has
- 19:04faculties for the whole diocese in which the bishop has
- 19:07given him an appointment. Priests who are duly authorized to
- 19:11hear confession have not the power to absolve from all sins.
- 19:15Since there are certain sins which the Pope for the bishop,
- 19:18has reserved himself for judgment that goes back to the
- 19:21Council of Trent. They can only absolve from these sins
- 19:24of jurisdiction be delivered to them by the Holy See.
- 19:27These are called reserved cases. These are very rare, by
- 19:30the way, usually in times of real serious heresy or excommunication. Anyway,
- 19:37the bishops are accustomed to reserve themselves absolution from more
- 19:41heinous crimes, such as apostasy, perjury, murder and arson. The
- 19:46object of this is to deter the faithful more effectively
- 19:49from the commission of such crimes. Secular magistrates cannot pass
- 19:53sentence on all criminals. Many cases have to be sent
- 19:55up to a higher court for judgment. But at the
- 19:58point of death all pret may absolve all penitents whatever,
- 20:03from every kind of sin or censure Council Trent. Again.
- 20:07In places of pilgrimage, the priest can usually absolve in
- 20:10cases reserved for the bishop, and in many dioceses they
- 20:13are empowered to do So during missions at Easter or
- 20:17when a general confession is made, and the confessional the
- 20:21priest stands in the place of God. Therefore the penitent
- 20:25is bowed to yield to him obedience. If our Lord
- 20:28himself sat in one confessional in an ordinary priest sin another,
- 20:32the one would not remit sins any more fully than
- 20:34the other. Why is this We call the priest who
- 20:37hears confession father because he represents our heavenly Father. For
- 20:41the same reason, he deals with the penitent gently and indulgently,
- 20:45like a father. We must obey the confessor, for it
- 20:48is not a man whom we obey but in his person,
- 20:52but is God, who has said he that heareth you
- 20:55heareth me. If we obey our confessor, we may be
- 20:58sure that we would not have to give account of
- 21:00our actions to God. For should the confessor be at error,
- 21:04there is no blame attaching to the penitent. He cannot
- 21:07do wrong and obey. Those who would make progress and
- 21:11imperfection should obey their confessor, as they would obey the
- 21:14voice of God, even should they practice of some devotion
- 21:18or penance be forbidden them. Saint John of the Cross
- 21:21says that to rebel against the dictum of the confessor
- 21:24manifests pride and want of faith. In the confessional, the
- 21:29priest exercises three functions, the office of teacher, physician, and judge.
- 21:36In his office of teacher and priest has to instruct
- 21:40the penitent. If he perceives that he is ignorant of something,
- 21:43is something important for him to know. Like a guardian angel,
- 21:47he directs the traveler in the right way. In his
- 21:50office of physician, he listens to the penitent who is
- 21:53sick with the disease of sin, and he gives an
- 21:56account of his condition. As the physician listens to the patient,
- 21:59describing as by early pains, he gives him the reniment
- 22:02remedy to affect his spiritual cure. As a physician, prescribes
- 22:06medicines for those who are sick of body. In his
- 22:10office of judge, he must decide whether the penitent is
- 22:13or is not to be absolved. In the former case,
- 22:16he gives him ample solution. In the latter, he withholds
- 22:18it under no possible conditions. May the priest repeat anything
- 22:23out of the confessional. This obligation to secrecy is called
- 22:26the seal of the confession. Not even to save his life.
- 22:29May a priest reveal what has been said to him
- 22:32in the confession Saint John Nepham Mousine, I guess could
- 22:39not have been prevailed, prevailed upon either by menaces or
- 22:43torture to disclose the queen's confession to King Winceslaus. That
- 22:48monarch accordingly ordered him to be thrown into the maldaal Oh,
- 22:52it's a river, I guess, and five lights floating over
- 22:55the water mark the spot, whereas corpse lay not even
- 22:58to avert a terrible calamity. May the priest reveal what
- 23:02has been said in confession. A king once asked the
- 23:05court chaplain whether if anyone confess that he intended to
- 23:09assassinate the king, he would make it known. He said,
- 23:12on no account. The clergyman replied, Then the king said,
- 23:15my life is not safe, and he said he would
- 23:18be less. So the priest rejoined. But for the confessional
- 23:21and the seal of confession. The obligation of secrecy also
- 23:25exists in regard to the penitent. A priest's servant wants
- 23:29confessed to him that he had stolen his corn. I
- 23:33guess I don't know corn means in that regard, but anyway,
- 23:36the priest was obliged to leave the key in. Oh,
- 23:38but it's actually corn from a barn. I've never heard
- 23:42of a priest having a barn, but I guess this
- 23:44is from the Middle Ages. I don't know. So a
- 23:47priest servant wants confessed to him that he had stolen
- 23:49his corn, the priest was obliged to leave a key
- 23:52in the barn door, the same as before. The seal
- 23:54of confession must be observed no less strictly in the
- 23:57court of justice, for the divine law is higher than
- 23:59human law. So even though he knew the guy was
- 24:02going to steal from him again, he left the key
- 24:03of the same spot because he couldn't show that anything
- 24:08knowledge a knowledge was taken outside of the confessional, even
- 24:12from himself. I'm reminded of Saint Faustina Koulska and her diary.
- 24:18Her confessor her priest is doubting that her visions are
- 24:22really coming from God, and he says, if you know,
- 24:27we'll find out if it's true or not. Next time
- 24:29you speak with Jesus, ask him what I confessed in
- 24:32the confessional last time I made a confession. And so
- 24:35she did, and Jesus responded to her I had forgotten,
- 24:40so I mean seriously, which you confessed to the confessional
- 24:44never leaves that room or booth or whatever it might be.
- 24:48The penalty for violin the seal is deprivation for the
- 24:50remainder of the priest's life. Besides several ecclesiastical punishments. We
- 24:55hear from time to time a bad priest who apostasize,
- 24:58but never has one been known to fall so low
- 25:00is to break the seal of the confession. The obligation
- 25:05of secrecy is for the protection of the penitent as
- 25:08well as to safeguard the sacrament of penance. It's also
- 25:13important to point out that, you know, the Anglican Church,
- 25:17for instance, originally their orders were valid. They don't seem
- 25:21to be anymore, but you know, it was actual Catholic
- 25:25priests who ordained the first priests who became Anglicans, so
- 25:29they had you could do real sacraments, but the Anglican
- 25:34priest was obligated to tell a government official what was
- 25:38said in the confessional. Yet another reason why the Anglicans, well,
- 25:43they basically no longer practice confession anymore, but it's not
- 25:46a valid sacrament. The same is true in certain Orthodox churches.
- 25:52I know that could be a controversial statement. Yes, the
- 25:55Orthodox priests can still administer valid sacraments. They are still
- 26:00in Apostolic succession from the time of the schism, but
- 26:05under the Soviets. Yeah, if you went in there and
- 26:08you said, you know, father, I'm thinking about assassinating such
- 26:14and such official, or I withheld monies from the poet,
- 26:17they had to tell the Soviet officials what was said.
- 26:21They violated the seal of the Confession. And I believe
- 26:25the same was true in Greece when the Muslims the
- 26:28caliph had taken over. That was one of the vowels
- 26:30they had to make their highest authorities not to God
- 26:33but to government. And I don't really know how Orthodox
- 26:39reconcile that, because even if their priests are in valid
- 26:45Apostolic succession, which maybe not all of them are, maybe
- 26:48they are, I don't know, they have certainly invalidated certain
- 26:54of the sacraments. They also allow for divorce. They this
- 27:00is what I was told when I was dating an Orthodox,
- 27:04a Russian Orthodox young woman who became just a very
- 27:07good friend. She had been married and divorced, and I said, well,
- 27:13you know, we would have to go through a Catholic annoyment,
- 27:17and she said, well, that makes sense. I think I
- 27:18actually would like to do that. But we did end up,
- 27:23you know, just becoming very good friends. Were it was
- 27:26explained to us by the priests that the Orthodox Church
- 27:30allows for certain like trial marriages. Your first marriage, if
- 27:35it's if it only lasts a short period of time,
- 27:37doesn't count, apparently, so that invalidates the sacrament of marriage.
- 27:43I don't know what all sacraments are valid and what
- 27:47aren't in even very devout Orthodox churches. I don't know.
- 27:54Maybe it's just up to the priest how closely he's
- 27:57going to follow the teachings of Christ and his church.
- 28:01I mean, in other words, you would say the more
- 28:04Catholic and Orthodox priest is, the more valid is sacraments. Yeah,
- 28:08that's probably a good way of putting it. And yeah,
- 28:12it's it's it's uh. I mean, if they don't respect
- 28:18the authority of the pope, then I mean it's really
- 28:24as hard to say what what authority. I mean, the
- 28:28authority given to the bishops comes from the pope. The
- 28:34authority given to the priests comes from the bishops. When
- 28:37you cut off the pope and say we just believe
- 28:39in some elders, and they have more authority than the pope.
- 28:46You well to say the least you divided the body
- 28:48of Christ. They are in schism they you know, some
- 28:53Orthodox guy was trying to say, how can you say
- 28:55we're in schism You know the same We had the
- 28:58same apostles as you do. And when the church has split,
- 29:02the Orthodox Church was larger than the Catholic Church. I said,
- 29:05it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. The Catholic Church came first.
- 29:09You admitted to that. You said that I don't remember
- 29:12ten twenty or something, that the Orthodox Church rejected the
- 29:16authority of the Catholic Church. By definition, the schismatic church
- 29:20is the newer one. And he flipped out. He couldn't
- 29:23stand that. I mean, and I mean, that's again, that's
- 29:27basic logic. I mean, he went, I mean he said
- 29:33it was like ten twenty. I mean, I'm not an
- 29:34expert on Orthodox by a means, he said, yeah, I
- 29:38mean Apostolic succession. The pope had authority until this date,
- 29:43and then we branched off and don't follow the pope anymore.
- 29:46And so I went and I started pulling out like
- 29:50you know, origin and polycarp and Saint Clement of Rome
- 29:53and all these, And I'm like, these are documents talking
- 29:56about the authority of the pope and that there can
- 29:59be no valid Christian Church that isn't under the authority
- 30:03of the pope, that are during the first one to
- 30:06two three hundred years of the church. Well, I reject
- 30:09them because I reject all posts. I said, but you
- 30:12said that the pope was valid and the Catholic Church
- 30:17was the one true church until ten twenty. So I'm
- 30:19giving you a pope from literally one a d and I, dude,
- 30:25just blew up. I mean, it really is seemingly pointless.
- 30:36I don't know. It's like Saint Teresa Lesso said, it's
- 30:39up to me to explain the truth. It's up for
- 30:42the Holy Spirit to convince someone else of the truth.
- 30:45It's not my job. But I mean, honestly, the Orthodox
- 30:51argument does not make a lot of sense, especially when
- 30:54you get into like the philip whatever it is, or
- 31:01whatever that crap. I mean, it's just an absolute garbage
- 31:05doctrine that makes no sense whatsoever and is actually apostate
- 31:09and heretical. It's a means of denying the Trinity essentially,
- 31:15and yeah, we kind of had some counsels and such
- 31:20several fifteen hundred years ago now that defined Christian doctrine
- 31:27as the Father's son in the Holy Spirit, calm, substantial.
- 31:33But you know, they find some way to twist things around,
- 31:39really to make a distinction without that much of a difference.
- 31:41But as they do, they fall into total heretical error.
- 31:46And I mean, it's probably better to be Orthodox and
- 31:50be Protestant because it's closer to being Catholic. You got
- 31:55a better chance of salvation. But there's no substitute for
- 31:59the Catholic Church. I mean, you're either Catholic or you're not.
- 32:07And if you're not, it's really kind of hard to
- 32:13figure out how you're validly Christian. I mean, like I said,
- 32:17there are a lot of Protestants who are going to
- 32:19have a rude awakening when Jesus says, truly, I do
- 32:22not know you because you never ate my flesh and
- 32:26drink my blood, because you never obeyed my church, because
- 32:30you never receive the sacraments, and faith alone is just
- 32:34not getting to cut it unless you're completely ignorant. And
- 32:38then you know, I said to God, I say, all
- 32:42the time, a judge can in human terms. A judge
- 32:46you go for a court of law, can pass a
- 32:49sentence or commute a sentence. It's up to him how
- 32:53strict or how much mercy he wants to show a defendant.
- 32:58Very few crime james carry, you know, a mandatory sentence.
- 33:03It's up to God. You know, he made each person.
- 33:05He's going to judge them by what they know and
- 33:08understand and their capacity and all that. But you know,
- 33:14the Saints say outside of the Catholic Church, there's no salvation.
- 33:17There's no salvation outside of the Catholic Church. So that's
- 33:23a tough one to reconcile. And yeah, we just have
- 33:27to keep praying for the unity of all Christians every
- 33:30single morning. Try to make it a practice to pray
- 33:33that Orthodox and Protestants will return to the Catholic Church
- 33:37and then all people throughout the world will convert to Catholicism.
- 33:40I pray daily that all Muslims will renounce violence and
- 33:44converted Catholicism. I think it's something we really have to do.
- 33:48But anyway, where was I Okay? So no priests violates
- 33:55sealed confession right, the obligation of secrecy for the protection
- 34:00of the penitent as well as to safeguard the sacrament
- 34:03of penance. The penitent may give the priest permission to
- 34:05make use of what he has told him in confession,
- 34:08but the confessor must be very very chary of availing
- 34:13himself with that provission. Very careful, very chari is the
- 34:17word we don't use anymore c. H A R Y.
- 34:19But in other words, if you had committed murder and
- 34:22you went to the priest and you said, you know,
- 34:25you confess full of your sin, and you said, father,
- 34:28would you please contact the police for me and help
- 34:32me negotiate, you know, turning myself in the priest would
- 34:36do that. But otherwise he can't. He must only do
- 34:44so when something really important is at stake, and as
- 34:46there's no risk of thereby brain confession discredit. The seal
- 34:50of confession does not bind the priest if anyone speaks
- 34:53outside of the confessional of which has been previously confessed.
- 34:57Every Catholic is perfectly free to choose his confessor. The
- 35:01slightest coertion in regard to confessions forbidden for fear of
- 35:06leading anyone to conceal a sin. Saint Teresa says, oh,
- 35:09what mischief the evil one is enabled to do if
- 35:12force is put upon anyone in regard to confession. Accordingly,
- 35:16no one is obliged to go to confession to his
- 35:19parish priest unless it be at Easter, as is a
- 35:22rule in some places. Everyone is at liberty approached the
- 35:26sacraments wherever he chooses, and the priest may not refuse
- 35:29to hear any man's confession because he belongs to another parish.
- 35:33Monks are required to go to confession to a member
- 35:35of their order. Nuns have their confessor appointed by the bishops,
- 35:39yet the ordinary confessor. Yet besides the ordinary confessor, the
- 35:43bishop or other superior has to offer them twice or
- 35:46thrice a year, and extraordinary confessor whose duty is to
- 35:50hear them again, it's from the Council of Trent. No
- 35:52one can prevent them from making their confession to him.
- 35:55Whoso desires to make progress and confession and perfection of
- 36:00say must place himself under the guidance of some particular confessor.
- 36:04That's a quote, well, that's source to Saint Philip Neary.
- 36:08I'm not sure if it's in exact quote a source
- 36:09to him, though he says if a man wants to
- 36:12learn a professional trade, he must have a master to
- 36:15instruct him. How much more he who wishes to acquire
- 36:19that most difficult of all professions, Christian perfection, He who
- 36:23would ascend to a high mountain, must have an experienced guide,
- 36:28how much more he who would scaled the heights of
- 36:30Christian perfection. Choice should not be made of a confessor
- 36:35without mature deliberation and fervent prayer. For twenty years Saint
- 36:39Teresa failed to find a spiritual father who understood her.
- 36:42She persevered in prayer, and Saint John of Vivilla was
- 36:45sent to her. A wise confessor should be chosen one
- 36:48who would not consult oh one would not consult the
- 36:52first doctor one met with about one's bodily ailments. Nor
- 36:57in legal difficulties should one take the advice of anyone
- 36:59but a solicitor, And should one use less precaution in
- 37:06a matter on which one's attorney depends. One must also
- 37:10choose a confessor in whom one has entire confidence. The
- 37:13devil ruins many souls by showing distrust between the penitent,
- 37:17and by sowing distrust between the penitent and the confessor.
- 37:21One's confessor should not be changed without good reason any
- 37:25more than one would leave a doctor who has attended
- 37:28one for long and who knows one's constitution. It is, however,
- 37:33well to go someone else occasionally so as not to
- 37:36get into a servile subjection to one individual. And I think, yeah,
- 37:43we'll wrap it up there. I think we got one
- 37:45more section, one more show on confession. We will talk
- 37:52next time about the effects of penance, what going to
- 37:55confection actually confession actually does for you. And that's the very,
- 38:00very important because not only do we have to explain that, yes,
- 38:04Jesus did actually institute the sacrament of confession, Yes he
- 38:08actually did give priests the authority and duty to hear
- 38:13confession absolve sins, to forgive sins. In fact, yes, that's
- 38:17actually in your Bible, and I can show it to you.
- 38:20But here's really why you should, because you know you
- 38:23get a lot of benefit from it as well, and
- 38:26you know little care and stick approach, I guess, but
- 38:30you know it's it's all part of explaining and being
- 38:34able to defend our faith. So y'all have a great week,
- 38:38and I will talk to you next time.
