- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Maximus Meridius Higgidius.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: What?
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: That that was the original name for Russell Crowe.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Not in the film Gladiator, that was actually his original name that his parents were going to call him.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: And then they ended up with Russell.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: So listeners, you'll pick who chose better.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Crazy how that works.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And then obviously his famous line in Gladiator, you killed my father, prepare to die.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yep.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: That's classic.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: That was that was gonna be a classic Maximus Decimus Hygieneus uh line.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Um just a weird coincidence that the character would have been so similarly named.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Maybe they would have gone with Rossumus Chromus, though.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: True, and your uh your brother's name was Diego Montoya.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, what's his name?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Princess Bride.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Prepare to die.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Prepared to die.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: He was also in Homeland, crazy.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: As the character Diego Montoya.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, crazy how it all works.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Six-handed man.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Wasn't he also like the head of the Six FBI in uh criminal intent at one point?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it he's had many a life, this man.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: It's uh anyway.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: We're here for vinyl club Maximus, and I gave you some homework that it's gonna pull on the old little heartstrings, gonna make you feel, you know.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: And feel I did, but I felt a multitude of emotions, and we'll come back to that, Sambo.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Um a multitude.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: A multitude.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: You did give me Lost Weekend by Phoebe Bridges, and I think you know, you when you a couple of weeks ago, if listeners haven't gone back and listened, Sam really got on board the Phoebe Bridges train.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, he was buying first class lounge pass tickets on that train.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Like he he wanted to be up the front.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And chew, chew.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: I can having listened to the album in full, I can see why.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: I think very Ethelkaney at very at various times, but also a bit Joji at times.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: So I think those two as as the Romans, the ancient Romans would say, as as Maximus Decimus Haginius would say, obviously.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Hergineus.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Um so I think there are like it's as what we took as we talked about when you gave me the record, fairly long.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: It's uh I think 16 individual songs uh plus uh a reprise, but that's fine.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: It was only like 53 minutes, that's not too bad.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: A few shorter interstitially intertude interlude kind of ones.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: But I think sonically, a fair spread on this record.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: There's some really uh acoustic, uh slow, folky kind of sounds.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: There's some like image and heap uh affected audio kind of moments.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: There's some that are like a bit country inflected, there are some that are big uh cinematic, atmospheric kind of things, and all sorts of things in between those uh categories.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: So sonically, you're not necessarily gonna you're not gonna get bored on this record because it just keeps moving and keeps changing.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: It certainly does.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Uh I think the out of those buckets of sounds, the image and heap vocal affected ones were the ones that I loved the most.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So that's uh The Outside, the opener, uh Lost Boys, uh, the seventh song, and then a few in the back end as well.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Uh I Can't Wait, uh did a lot of it.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Um then uh Liberty Tree, kind of towards that back end where there's there's that weird kind of operatic vocal solo, also kind of in that same world.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, then you know, the ones like Haunted, which had that country twinge.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: It's got that little bit of like picked guitar, a little bit of fiddle, but then it builds and it grows, and by the end, you don't really feel like you're in a country song.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: You feel like you're in like a cinematic kind of almost soundtracky kind of song.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think uh those ones were were quite good.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: I think for me the biggest letdown on this record.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Here we go.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: The biggest letdown on this record is I think it's a little bit it felt like there was a there was A side and B side, and it felt like after I when I went through A side, I was like, great, that was a beautiful, like self-contained story, or like self-contained sonic story at least, like not necessarily the lyrics, but like musically, it touched all these different things and it did all this stuff.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And then I got to side B and I was like, Oh, we're hearing very similar textures and tones from side A, which is not a problem.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: They were good textures and tones, but I just felt like did this record just need maybe like an edit or maybe some merges with some songs?
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Because I felt like I was like, Oh, I've heard not to the song, but a similar sound and texture previously on this record, and given how diverse the sounds were, it felt weird to then go back to one or back to a couple where I was like, This sounds like the one above.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Um, so as above so below, Sam, as the case may be.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: But like well, it's just just as above in the case of Lost Weekend, but shout out to uh As Above So Below.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: They're banned.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: I think they might be.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: The the lyric the lyric in the song is As Above So Below, but uh the title of the track, of course, is just As Above.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I think um I think a lot of the like I don't know, I've I it's not a problem.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Like I did enjoy them, but I just felt like oh a bit of a time loop.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: I'm back at the beginning, but I'm only halfway through the record here.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, it's um it's very much an album that if you fuck with the vibes of the majority of the songs, you're gonna have a great time because some of them, like you say, repeat um the same vibe.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Um and a lot of the songs I like on the album have similar vibes.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: You talked about, you know, I can't wait, the outside.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Um I would throw in like you know, I can't wait as a bit of an anomaly, but you've got As Above, which is very atmospheric and ambient, so is Other Plans, so is Kill Me, so is like The Lost Weekend Reprise.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: There's a lot that kind of fit into the same mold, like you say.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So, you know, if you like it, you're gonna have a great time.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: But I agree, if you if you're not a fan of it, you're in for a bit of repeat.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Well, see, I I don't know.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of these because they do sound so different, like through side A, you touch on the country and the image and heap weird stuff and the cinematic stuff and the like indie sad girl stuff.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Like, I think once you've made through side A, you're gonna hear like of the whatever it is, eight songs, you're gonna go, oh cool, okay, I've got a lot, a lot of different sounds that I'm working with.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: I don't think you will feel too many repeats.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: It's only once you've like get to that second half of the record where you start going, oh, okay, this is a similar song town.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: And that's not a like if you think of like M83, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, each song has a corresponding song on the second disc.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And so it's like they they're meant to sound similar because they kind of tell two different sides of a story.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: So that is fine, like it's not a problem inherently.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I just felt like after we'd gone through all of these different sounds, to then go back to similar ones before, I was like, could could they have been merged?
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Could we have gone for like a different sound or a different texture in there or something?
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: So, like maybe it's just my interpretation of it.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: It's not a problem.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: It's just I felt like I was like really looking forward to more weird sounds.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: I didn't necessarily get that, but that's fine.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: It's okay to have like a you know a palette you're using for a record.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's in your um, you know, your notes at the moment, but I'd love to talk about the co-writers on this album because there's a lot of everyone that don't know.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, just having a look here, I mean, one of the key producers is Jack Antinoff.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Um, Hardly Know Her.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: It's actually pretty good, didn't mind that one.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Um, but for uh a bunch of her songs, Phoebe Bridges writes with the likes of Maya Hawk, Julian Baker, uh Lucy Dakis.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: She also writes weirdly with like Bo Burnham of Vine fame for songs like uh I Can't Wait, As Above, Lost Weekend Reprise, Best Dressed, which is a a CD vinyl bonus track.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Um really cool to see so many different collaborators on the album.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: I think Bo Burnham writes on a large majority of them, actually.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Well, I think she's dating Bo Burnham currently, so it it kind of has both like the the co-write and the maybe the subject for a fair few of these.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Is there anything better than pussy?
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, really.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I was gonna yes, Phoebe Bridges, but yes.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Um I think songs that stood out the dating, have a little kissy kiss, smoochy smooch.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Uh the tracks that I think were the most uh exciting for me were uh Bobby.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: It had like probably the most energy of this record.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Uh Liberty Tree, I think just the instrumentation was really weird and cool.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Like some of the like sub-bass kick drums that felt like they should have been in like a fucking EDM build-up and drop, but then like went into this indie kind of thing were very cool.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Um I can't wait, but then I can't wait.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Asterisk on the side.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: The the the duet part, I could take it or leave it.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: The rest of it, hell yeah.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: Take the duet out for me.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure it's Cameron Winter on that.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Um from Geese.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Which again, uh it's he's not he doesn't he doesn't do it badly.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: It's not a bad duet.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I just think that musically it stands out as a weird bit in the song.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it definitely does, and it's kind of it's like a dissonant duet, is what I'd say.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Because Cameron Winter famously not a great singer.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Um and say what you will about geese, but I think it kind of works, like it's kind of grating, but the way the voices I think it works for a storytelling purpose, but yeah, the first time it came on, I was like, oh having said that.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: I love I say that, I like the song.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you mentioned the storytelling part because I think I've talked a lot about what happens musically in this record, but uh in terms of the lyricism and the storytelling, this is a very good record.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Like she paints such a good picture of what she's doing, where she's at, how she felt, uh, and that is both lyrically and how it sort of sort of does the the the the uh you know what is it text splaining where it it does the song moves at the part that it needs to move at to hit that lyrical depth.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Um, I think this is a really good storytelling record.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Uh if if that's kind of the way you want to jump in, dive into it.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I was like it was a really good record.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: I enjoyed it.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I'll come back to it a lot.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: It is dark, well not dark necessarily, but heavy and sad uh at various points.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: But musically, very, very good.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Um aside from as I said, I wish there's probably two less songs, and I wouldn't I couldn't tell you which ones because they're all quite good, but just a bit repetitive sometimes.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I get you.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Critically, it's been like received so well.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of people calling it the album of the year, and that's like high profile publications.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Um, been getting a lot of like four out of fives.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: The uh the needle drop, Anthony Fantano gave it nine out of ten.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Um, it's a very, very good album.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Antonius Fantanius, as he was originally called, I believe.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: Antonius!
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I've seen my microphone peak.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: I was fucking peaking, bruh.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, if you if you haven't uh gotten around the Lost Week Gambo Bridges, I think it's a very good album.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Um be ready to feel some feels, be ready to to go through some storytelling moments, but all in all, pretty good.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Good record, Sam.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: I can see why you like it.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Thank you, sir.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: What have you got for me?
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Sam, do you know that this next record that I'm gonna give you is our 100th record on vinyl club?
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Uh is that a good thing or a bad thing?
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Well, I think this is a pretty good record.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: I think I think you I think you think this is a pretty good record too.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: I think we've talked about it.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: But for our 100th uh vinyl club record, I would like you to please review Snow Patrol with Eyes Open.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Tell me that you open your eyes.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Everyone will, of course, know uh their local pub uh guy with the guitar doing chasing cars, obviously.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Uh but um I think uh a record that has a lot of depth beyond that song, even if Grey's Anatomy did that song, but like made that song the Snow Patrol song.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: It there is like we were talking about it last week, just as I saw it sort of sitting on your shelf there.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: There's say what you want about like chasing cars being overplayed, but banger, like banger, absolute banger, open your eyes, another banger.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: They have some genuinely good depth in their um their repertoire.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, and that record dropped uh 20 years ago, it's the 20th anniversary that I've got here in my hot little hands, so I think a good time.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: I think an album we both uh both enjoy, but I'd like to get your thoughts on it more more broadly because 100 records in Divinal Club, and uh it's nice, it's nice to bring the people together.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: I'm excited.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Sounds good to me, sir.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Any vinyl thoughts?
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Any vinyl thoughts?
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: I I've purchased a couple, uh, mostly on pre-order.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: So uh a few that are coming down the pike.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Uh including including one, uh, a 15th year, a 15-year anniversary for one that I think I don't know, it could split the room, but I know you like a bit of it.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: So let's see how we go.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Well, as you always say, you can get pregnant from pre-order, so be careful.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Always use protection, use use uh plastic vinyl sleeves.
- 14:08unknown: Yeah.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, on that note, practice safety everywhere you go, children.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Um, it's important to emphasize extra measures in the case of nervousness or built-up tension.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Because vinyl, for those that don't know, is wax, which can bend or break at the first sign of tension.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And we don't want that, so protection is important.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: And you know what they say?
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Vinyl, it's all a psychological game, it's all in here, Sam.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: It is 90% of the game is above your head, above your shoulders, even.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Above your head, just hovering uh loosely in the air.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Like a halo.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: And leading us out of the show, Max is going to sing the chorus from Beyoncé's namesake song, Halo.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: If I lay here.
