- 0:00We are wrapped up in the ego consciousness from the moment we
- 0:03take birth. The entire societal structure as
- 0:08well as the weight of millennia of evolutionary development to
- 0:12create an entity that could develop the powers of the vital
- 0:15and mental. Being as a self aware and
- 0:18seemingly independent being works to build up the ego
- 0:23consciousness. As we build our relationships
- 0:27with our family, our friends, our coworkers, and as we undergo
- 0:32education and socialization, we get tied ever tighter to the
- 0:37sense that we are a separate being with free will and the
- 0:42ability to make our own decisions about our life.
- 0:46If we examine this sense more closely, we quickly find that
- 0:50much of what we consider to be the action of free will is
- 0:55easily seen to be determined, caused or manipulated through
- 1:00forces and beings working on us and through us.
- 1:04Yet most people never take the examination to this level and
- 1:08thus feel empowered as independent beings.
- 1:14When a seeker takes up spiritual sadhana, this well established
- 1:18ego consciousness does not simply disappear.
- 1:21It continues as we believe we can succeed in the spiritual
- 1:25practice by our own efforts and overcome the limitations and
- 1:30difficulties similarly by effort.
- 1:33Eventually the seeker begins to understand that it is not so
- 1:39simple when the guna of rajas is predominant.
- 1:44The seeker believes through the exercise of strength of will and
- 1:48effort he will accomplish. He may believe he is specially
- 1:52suited, has a background or innate capacity for this, or
- 1:57that efforts in his past lives have prepared him for the
- 2:00realization in the current life. When this does not work out as
- 2:05anticipated, he may fall back into the Guna of Thomas and feel
- 2:11despondent, depressed, or otherwise incapable or a
- 2:16failure. When the Gunausatwa is in front,
- 2:20he may begin to gain a recognition of the
- 2:22interrelationships and long evolutionary background he has
- 2:27to deal with. Of course, the feeling of pride
- 2:31or vanity can enter into the response of any of the gunas in
- 2:35the unique way that a particular guna responds to situations.
- 2:40Eventually it becomes clear that the ego consciousness is an
- 2:45illusory construct set up for a particular evolutionary purpose
- 2:51but not suited to carry out the next phase of the evolutionary
- 2:55process. The seeker begins to appreciate
- 2:59that the fiction of a self-made success cannot stand in front of
- 3:03millions of years of habitual and instinctual behavior, or
- 3:08even just the social construction of his personality
- 3:13in the present lifetime. The evolution is not of the
- 3:17individual, but of the earth consciousness, and it is the
- 3:21divine force that actually carries out the development,
- 3:25working through the Nexus and framework provided by the
- 3:29individual seeker, but not under the separate control of that
- 3:33individual. This shift of standpoint from
- 3:38the ego standpoint to the divine standpoint implies that the
- 3:43individual should not focus his efforts entirely on suppression
- 3:47or concern about defects which abound in everyone born into the
- 3:52earth consciousness, But rather he should work on tuning his
- 3:56consciousness to the spiritual forces that are then capable of
- 4:01carrying out the spiritual sadhna and effectuating the
- 4:05needed changes and transformations.
- 4:09Whenever the focus drifts away from the focus on higher forces,
- 4:13the seeker can gently but persistently refocus and open
- 4:18his receptivity, Srioro Bindo writes quote.
- 4:24It does not matter what defects you may have in your nature, the
- 4:29one thing that matters is you're keeping yourself open to the
- 4:33force. Nobody can transform himself by
- 4:36his own unaided efforts. It is only the divine Force that
- 4:41can transform him. If you keep yourself open, all
- 4:45the rest will be done for you. Hardly anyone is strong enough
- 4:50to overcome by his own unaided aspiration and will.
- 4:53The forces of the lower nature, even those who do it, get only a
- 4:58certain kind of control, but not a complete mastery.
- 5:03Will and aspiration are needed to bring down the aid of the
- 5:07divine force and to keep the being on its side in its dealing
- 5:11with the lower powers. The divine force fulfilling the
- 5:16spiritual will and the heart's psychic aspiration can alone
- 5:21bring about the conquest. End Quote Reference Sri
