- 0:02Speaker 1: to the folks here at the Hollow for joining us live.
- 0:04Speaker 1: But if you're tuning on the radio or one of
- 0:06Speaker 1: the various apps, appreciate you tuning in on this Tuesday night.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Women play Tomorrow Night in Hartford. Who's going to a
- 0:11Speaker 1: game Tomorrow night? Raise your hand? Raise your hand, Paul,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I know you're going. You don't have to raise your hand.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Paul always goes. But Saint John's Tomorrow Night seven thirty Tips,
- 0:20Speaker 1: seven thirty on the radio. If you're looking for us
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the radio, Tomorrow night, Run the River one oh
- 0:24Speaker 1: five nine. The guys play Providence. They're on at six
- 0:27Speaker 1: thirty on the flagship Fox Sports ninety seven to nine
- 0:29Speaker 1: in the entire network. But you can always listen to
- 0:31Speaker 1: the Varsity app all sorts of apps. You can listen
- 0:34Speaker 1: to both games with Gino here. Ahead of Saint John's.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Sarah Strong is closing in on a thousand points. She
- 0:40Speaker 1: needs seventy three good She's played fifty five games, which
- 0:46Speaker 1: is the record page in my the quickest to get
- 0:49Speaker 1: to one thousand, so probably sometime and then what's the record?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Fifty five games to one thousand Paige and Maya.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Own that record, and where's Sarah?
- 0:57Speaker 1: And Sarah's at nine twenty seven right now her fifty
- 1:00Speaker 1: fifth game. Tomorrow will be her fifty fifth game.
- 1:02Speaker 3: And she needs how many seventy three? I don't think
- 1:05Speaker 3: she's going to get it.
- 1:06Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, she'd have to do a Welt Chamberlain, right, yeah, Pennsylvania.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's interesting.
- 1:16Speaker 3: The more, uh, the more scorers you have on your team,
- 1:22Speaker 3: you know, you you're going to get uh, you're going
- 1:28Speaker 3: to get less shots.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So the ball is going to be spread.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Around, and so it may be a little bit more difficult,
- 1:36Speaker 3: you know. And Sarah's a little too conscientious.
- 1:40Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:40Speaker 3: She wants to pass the ball every time she gets it,
- 1:44Speaker 3: you know, so it's a detriment. I think she wants
- 1:47Speaker 3: to pass. She would rather pass it than shoot it.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Right sixty eight.
- 1:53Speaker 2: That's not bad.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you never had a problem with with Maya with that. No, no,
- 2:00Speaker 3: Maya passed the ball to the basket, that was it.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, she was good at doing that.
- 2:05Speaker 2: She was really good at doing that was good. She
- 2:07Speaker 2: was really good at it. She was really good at it.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Who's the other one page? Page?
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, the page her freshman year, there weren't a lot
- 2:15Speaker 3: of scores on her, you know, so she had to
- 2:18Speaker 3: do a bulk of the scoring. So circumstances I think
- 2:22Speaker 3: have a lot to do with it. But certainly, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 3: Sarah's probably one of the best offensive players in the country.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You know, she's well.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Rounded enough that there really isn't anything that especially if
- 2:37Speaker 3: she's shooting the boy the way she's shooting it right now.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, she's sixty from three over her last five games.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Where have you seen the biggest growth in her game
- 2:46Speaker 1: so far this season from last? Are they little nuances
- 2:49Speaker 1: here and there that you see.
- 2:52Speaker 2: A little bit here and there, but not.
- 2:56Speaker 3: You know, like the Ohio State game, you know, where
- 2:59Speaker 3: every body was just absolutely blown away by her performance.
- 3:04Speaker 3: And now how it stay came right, you know, when
- 3:06Speaker 3: she had twenty nine points and I don't know what
- 3:08Speaker 3: else yet. And I think the she's you forget that
- 3:16Speaker 3: she's only played fifty five games, so there isn't that
- 3:22Speaker 3: this is where she is and she's kind of nearing
- 3:26Speaker 3: her peak. I mean, there's so many things that she
- 3:31Speaker 3: can do that we're not seeing right now, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 3: And I think she has it in her because she's
- 3:40Speaker 3: shown it.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I just think she has to become.
- 3:42Speaker 3: A little more assertive and not be so worried about
- 3:49Speaker 3: getting everybody else the ball. I think our best players
- 3:52Speaker 3: a lot of times suffer from that, you know, over
- 3:55Speaker 3: the course of their careers here at Yukon. And I
- 3:58Speaker 3: think maybe that's why they come here. You know, they
- 4:00Speaker 3: know we don't build our team around one kid or
- 4:03Speaker 3: two kids. You know, we just kind of spread the
- 4:05Speaker 3: ball around and whoever's open gets it. And and if
- 4:09Speaker 3: you're unselfish, then you're going to be you know, you're
- 4:11Speaker 3: going to thrive here. And if you're very selfish, you're
- 4:13Speaker 3: not going to play here. But there's a fine line,
- 4:18Speaker 3: you know, like I don't want Sarah to pass the
- 4:21Speaker 3: ball unless somebody.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Is wide open thanks to and.
- 4:25Speaker 3: You know, it's like I used to tell Diana, don't
- 4:28Speaker 3: pass the ball in the first quarter. All right, make
- 4:32Speaker 3: sure we're up twenty, and then you can pass it
- 4:33Speaker 3: anytime you want.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Well, she's passing it to easy, You're okay with that, right, Yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I mean, if you come down and there's a guy
- 4:39Speaker 3: wide open right there, throw it to him.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 3: But when you come down and you're staring at the
- 4:43Speaker 3: basket and you're ten feet away and there's nobody around you,
- 4:46Speaker 3: and you're looking for somebody to.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Pass it to. What that?
- 4:49Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Agree?
- 4:51Speaker 3: Like when I coach guys, that never came out of
- 4:53Speaker 3: my mouth shoot more.
- 4:55Speaker 2: No, are you kidding me? No?
- 4:57Speaker 3: You know you never you just close your eyes when
- 4:59Speaker 3: you're coaching guys, like what kind of shot is that?
- 5:02Speaker 2: You know?
- 5:02Speaker 3: With these guys, you know they're they're passing up really
- 5:05Speaker 3: really good shots and that leads to sometimes that leads
- 5:08Speaker 3: to too many turnovers, like the last two games. You know,
- 5:11Speaker 3: the turnovers are just people just trying to be too
- 5:15Speaker 3: you know, just shoot it.
- 5:17Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Jay Wright used to say something that's really, really, really true.
- 5:20Speaker 3: He said, the time when you're most open to shoot
- 5:24Speaker 3: is immediately when you catch the ball, because that's why
- 5:28Speaker 3: you caught it. You're open. If you weren't open, we
- 5:31Speaker 3: wouldn't have thrown it to you. So you're open and
- 5:34Speaker 3: you catch it. That's the time when you should be
- 5:36Speaker 3: thinking catch and shoot if you're obviously in the scoring area.
- 5:41Speaker 3: And that's something that we've been harping on, you know
- 5:44Speaker 3: with our guys.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Okay, one player that has come to life the last
- 5:48Speaker 1: few games is Jenna el Alfie.
- 5:51Speaker 2: She is shooting.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Sixty eight percent over her last three games, ten points
- 5:55Speaker 1: per game, fourteen total rebounds, back to back games in
- 5:59Speaker 1: double figures for the first time in her career. What
- 6:02Speaker 1: have you seen differently from this young lady lately?
- 6:09Speaker 2: Well, it's been novel.
- 6:12Speaker 3: And she went home for Christmas and came back and
- 6:15Speaker 3: I guess on the flight over she realized that when
- 6:19Speaker 3: she shot at the ball went in the basket, she
- 6:21Speaker 3: would feel a lot better about herself, you know. So
- 6:25Speaker 3: she was going through a stretch there where you know,
- 6:27Speaker 3: we were getting her layups and it was like fifty
- 6:29Speaker 3: to fifty whether she was going to make it or not.
- 6:31Speaker 2: So she was miserable all the time.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, I'd be miserable too if I kept
- 6:35Speaker 3: missing those easy laps.
- 6:38Speaker 2: So you know, they start.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Going in, you know, and now she's at the free
- 6:42Speaker 3: throw line taking a couple jump shots, so I said
- 6:45Speaker 3: take it. You know that in the past she wouldn't
- 6:49Speaker 3: take it because she didn't think she would make it.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Then when she did take it is because she's stuck
- 6:54Speaker 3: with the ball and didn't know what to do with it,
- 6:55Speaker 3: so she just shot it right. So there's a there's
- 6:59Speaker 3: a much greater comfort level that she has right now
- 7:05Speaker 3: when she has the ball in her hands. She's not
- 7:07Speaker 3: as jumpy and it's not as you know, anxious as
- 7:11Speaker 3: she was. And you forget too, this is only her
- 7:13Speaker 3: second year of playing. I mean I looked out on
- 7:16Speaker 3: the court. I forget when it was two games ago.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Maybe I looked out on the court and we had
- 7:21Speaker 3: Heckel was out there. Who's the sophomore, Ali, who's the sophomore,
- 7:26Speaker 3: Sarah who's the sophomore, Jenna who's the sophomore. And I
- 7:32Speaker 3: forget who else was out there?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Oh, I'm Blanca, who's a freshman. So I looked out there.
- 7:37Speaker 2: We had four.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Sophomores and one freshman now on the floor. So we're
- 7:41Speaker 3: still a young team, you know.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and.
- 7:47Speaker 3: There are times when we're gonna look like Gangbusters, and
- 7:49Speaker 3: there are times when it's not going to look like that.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Unfortunately. All right, more with you.
- 7:56Speaker 1: You know, we're live at the Hollow Restaurant of Manchester
- 7:58Speaker 1: Country Club. This is the Yukon Women's bast While Coach
- 8:00Speaker 1: Show on Learfield. We're back in just a minute.
