- 0:25Speaker 1: Our first article is a picture. And it is a
- 0:31Speaker 1: group of three men and one lady, and they are
- 0:35Speaker 1: taking a cloth off a bench. And underneath the picture,
- 0:40Speaker 1: it says, Local veterans Emily Elam, Jessica Skaggs, Paul Keaton,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and Sam Long unveil the Freedom Bench place at Treadway
- 0:50Speaker 1: Park by Big Sandy Sons of the American Revolution chapter
- 0:55Speaker 1: during an October 17th dedication ceremony. The bench honors American
- 1:00Speaker 1: veterans of all wars and commemorates the 250th anniversary of
- 1:07Speaker 1: the founding fathers signing the Declaration of Independence. And underneath
- 1:13Speaker 1: that is an article about it, and it says, Freedom
- 1:16Speaker 1: Bench Dedicated Held at Treadway Park. Big Sandy SAR Morgan
- 1:22Speaker 1: DAV Take Part in Ceremony by Miranda M. Cantrell. The
- 1:28Speaker 1: Big Sandy Sons of the American Revolution, the SAR, chapter
- 1:33Speaker 1: on Saturday, October 17, hosted a dedication ceremony for the
- 1:37Speaker 1: Memorial Freedom Bench that was recently placed at Treadway Park.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Approximately 50 people gathered for the service, which opened with
- 1:46Speaker 1: a welcome from Big Sandy SAR past president Edward Keaton
- 1:51Speaker 1: of West Liberty and the posting of colors by the
- 1:54Speaker 1: Big Sandy SAR color guard. The presentation of colors from
- 2:01Speaker 1: Color Guard members who dressed in a historical military regalia
- 2:06Speaker 1: from the American Revolution era preceded an invocation by Big
- 2:10Speaker 1: Sandy SAR Chaplain Aaron Merritt. Following the invocation, Morgan County
- 2:17Speaker 1: DAV Chapter 132 member Darlene Crouch led the audience in
- 2:22Speaker 1: the Pledge of Allegiance ahead of a recitation of the
- 2:28Speaker 1: SAR Pledge and the Big Sandy SAR Chapter members. We,
- 2:34Speaker 1: descendants of the heroes of the American Revolution, who by
- 2:38Speaker 1: their sacrifices established the United States of America, reaffirm our
- 2:43Speaker 1: faith in the principles of liberty and our constitutional republic,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and solemnly pledge ourselves to defend them against every foe.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Big Sandy Chapter SAR Past President Edward Keaton gave a
- 3:00Speaker 1: brief overview of the SAR's organizational objectives. Every SAR member
- 3:07Speaker 1: is a direct descendant of someone who participated in the
- 3:11Speaker 1: American Revolution, Keaton said. Our purpose is to perpetrate the
- 3:17Speaker 1: memory of our ancestors and build camaraderie among descendants. Keaton
- 3:23Speaker 1: noted that the placement of the Freedom Bench coincides with
- 3:27Speaker 1: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and that the Big Sandy SAR chapter previously erected similar
- 3:37Speaker 1: monuments in Pikeville and Moorhead. Additionally, the Daughters of the
- 3:42Speaker 1: American Revolution will plant a Liberty Tree in Treadway Park
- 3:47Speaker 1: to further commemorate the United States' Semi-quintentional, Keaton spoke about
- 3:55Speaker 1: the historical significance of America's 250th anniversary. This is a
- 4:00Speaker 1: celebration of our saying, we want to be free of Britain,
- 4:04Speaker 1: Keaton said. What did our ancestors do? It's easy to
- 4:08Speaker 1: say that, now, let's go do it. That's the tough part,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and they did. Think of how they sacrificed. Keaton also
- 4:17Speaker 1: recognized women's roles in the American Revolution, noting that he
- 4:21Speaker 1: had chosen to place the Freedom Bench in close proximity
- 4:25Speaker 1: to the Women's Military Monument in Treadway Park. These are
- 4:30Speaker 1: women in the armed forces, Keaton said, in reference to
- 4:33Speaker 1: the statue, and there were ladies in the Revolution, too.
- 4:38Speaker 1: What about the mothers? What about the wives? What about
- 4:41Speaker 1: the daughters? What about those people who left behind? They
- 4:46Speaker 1: really kept the home fires going, and they deserve more
- 4:51Speaker 1: credit than they get. Keaton concluded his remarks by stating
- 4:55Speaker 1: that he hopes the Freedom Bench will become an enduring
- 4:58Speaker 1: symbol for all those who visit Treadway Park. This is
- 5:02Speaker 1: a constant public reminder that to not forget what our
- 5:07Speaker 1: ancestors went through and what we are still obligated to defend.
- 5:12Speaker 1: And that is our freedom. And Keaton said, if you
- 5:17Speaker 1: don't defend it, you'll lose it. It's as simple as that.
- 5:22Speaker 1: That bench is a constant reminder to all of us
- 5:25Speaker 1: to never let it go. Following Keaton's address, local veterans
- 5:31Speaker 1: Sam Long, Emily Elam, Jessica Skaggs, Paul Keaton unveiled the
- 5:37Speaker 1: Freedom Bench ahead of the military gun salutes from the
- 5:40Speaker 1: Big Sandy SAR Color Guard and Morgan County DAV Chapter
- 5:45Speaker 1: 132 members. Keaton preceded Big Sandy SAR Chaplain Aaron Merritt's
- 5:52Speaker 1: benediction with a recitation of the SAR recessional. Until we
- 6:00Speaker 1: meet again, let us remember our obligations to our forefathers
- 6:05Speaker 1: who gave us our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, an
- 6:08Speaker 1: independent Supreme Court, and a nation of free men. Keaton
- 6:13Speaker 1: closed the event by thanking all those in attendance, including
- 6:18Speaker 1: the State Representative Richard White, Circuit Judge Rebecca Phillips, District
- 6:23Speaker 1: Judge Court Judge Rupert Wilhoyt, former Circuit Judge Sam Long,
- 6:30Speaker 1: City Councilman Grant Sorrell. Also recognized during the ceremony were
- 6:35Speaker 1: Esther Taylor, Pikeville Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter, Patrick McMurchie,

- 9:34Speaker 1: Chair addresses recent general manager resignation and job openings. Notes
- 9:40Speaker 1: compliant by Miranda M. Cantrell. The Morgan County Water District
- 9:45Speaker 1: Board Commissioners met in a special session on Thursday, October 15,
- 9:50Speaker 1: at the Water District Office on Highway 172. Board Chairman
- 9:55Speaker 1: Chris Adams said the meeting had been scheduled for the
- 9:58Speaker 1: regular meeting date of Monday, October 12, but was postponed
- 10:03Speaker 1: due to the Columbus Day holiday. In addition to Chairman Adams,
- 10:08Speaker 1: those present included Commissioners William LeMaster, Ellen Motley, and Wade Cantrell.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Commissioner Patty Corradillo was not in attendance. Accountant Brenda Morgan
- 10:22Speaker 1: provided financial reports to the board ahead of management review
- 10:27Speaker 1: from Assistant General John Coffey. Coffey told the board that
- 10:32Speaker 1: the current water loss rate is 25.17 percent, which he
- 10:37Speaker 1: said was down from the previous month. Additionally, Coffey said
- 10:41Speaker 1: that he had learned from engineers that a recent water
- 10:45Speaker 1: line extension project would be completed under budget with approximately $ 120, 000
- 10:50Speaker 1: of allocated funds left unused. Coffey stated that Gateway Area
- 10:58Speaker 1: Development District officials told him that the leftover funds could
- 11:02Speaker 1: be used for the purchase of equipment, trailers, trucks, or parts,
- 11:07Speaker 1: but noted that the money could not be used for
- 11:10Speaker 1: additional water line extensions. At the conclusion of Coffey's report,
- 11:16Speaker 1: Chairman Adams addressed the absence of the former general manager,
- 11:21Speaker 1: Andy Legg. I would like to say something, Adams said,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and Andy is no longer with us. I'd like to
- 11:29Speaker 1: take some time to thank him for what he has
- 11:32Speaker 1: done for this place. Andy stepped in there when we
- 11:35Speaker 1: needed him and did what he could. I really appreciate
- 11:39Speaker 1: the time that he did give when he came back. Legg,
- 11:43Speaker 1: a longtime employee who had resigned prior to the October
- 11:47Speaker 1: 15th meeting, was named general manager in 2024 after Shannon
- 11:52Speaker 1: Elam vacated that position. The board has placed a job
- 11:57Speaker 1: opening notice for the position of general manager in the
- 12:00Speaker 1: Courier Inn on the Morgan County Water District Facebook page.
- 12:05Speaker 1: The notice can be found on page 7 of this edition.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Chairman Adams indicated that the board had received a complaint,
- 12:13Speaker 1: which Commissioner Ellen Motley said was in regard to deliberations
- 12:19Speaker 1: and decisions conducted without proper public notice and documentation. The
- 12:25Speaker 1: only thing I think we've done without notifying the public
- 12:28Speaker 1: was when we came up there and talked to Andy Legg,
- 12:33Speaker 1: Adams said, which you can't do that. It wasn't a
- 12:38Speaker 1: meeting and we didn't discuss anything. It was just a
- 12:41Speaker 1: courtesy talk with him. We were in the wrong there.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I went back and looked up the rules and we
- 12:47Speaker 1: can't have meetings without employees. We'll make everything public from
- 12:52Speaker 1: here on out. Following Chairman Adams' remarks, the board entered
- 12:57Speaker 1: into closed session to discuss personnel matters. Upon returning to
- 13:02Speaker 1: open session, Chairman Adams announced that the board took no
- 13:06Speaker 1: action during the closed session and the meeting was adjourned.
