Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Before you say everybody knows this, give me just a chance.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: So the phone rings and a stranger tells me my business is invisible.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: And that's how it begins.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: A call center rep says people are searching for my business and they're not finding it.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Usually from somewhere like India or Bangladesh.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Hard to tell.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: But the second that I sound interested, the call gets handed off to somebody that's more refined.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And the first caller, that's the lookout, the one that's wanting to get to the sale.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: The second one, well, he's the he or she is the closer.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: A mine called himself Tyrrell.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And the number on my caller ID was 424-655-7395.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Well, then comes the timeline.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Built a sound official.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: He began in 2008, Google created a free listing.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: In 2019, Google Assistant changed everything, and now he says 70% of the people searching for my business by voice can't find it because my number isn't registered anywhere.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: In actuality, folks, there is no registry.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Nobody sells one.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Google does not charge a fee to claim or manage your business profile.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: That profile is free.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: The story exists for one reason to get a card number before you check anything.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So I push back, and when that's when the pitch turned.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: He got louder, he got personal, and he told me he loves playing games with stupid people over the phone.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: A real vendor loses a sale and says thanks anyway.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: A guy working a script gets ugly the moment the script stops working.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Here's how we protect ourselves.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Do not press a button to talk to anybody when you get a phone call.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Do not say yes to anything.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Even a simple confirmation.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: A recorded yes can come back later as an authorization.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Ask for the full legal company name and mailing address, then hang up.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I would probably do that first if you want to play the game.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: A real company can send that in writing.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Never give a card number to someone who called you.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: In fact, anybody that calls you get their name and business address and name of business as well.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: If they refuse to give it, well, you know exactly what they're up to.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And again, never give a card number, credit card to somebody who called you, and not for a small fee, not for a trial, not for just uh put it online or on file in case you want to proceed.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Tell whomever answers your phones.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Tell all your staff.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: That front desk gets these calls first, and it's the easiest place to get tricked.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Number five, write down the date and the time, the number and what they said, and then block it.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov and also at do not call.gov.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: If your number is on the do not call registry and the company sells to you anyway, well, that's a violation.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And your notes are the evidence.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Now, how being found on VoiceSearch actually works?
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Well, it's not a registration, it's data.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant answer from the same sources everyone else uses.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So what matters is whether those sources agree with each other.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: You claim your Google Business Profile, it's free, and you can verify itself at business.google.com.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: You make your big business name, address, and phone number match the same everywhere.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: On your website, your directories, social pages, put your hours and services and your service area in plain sentences.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Get real reviews from real customers, add structured data to your website so a machine can read it without guessing.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: That's the whole job.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: It takes weeks of steady work, not just a phone call and a credit card.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And if a stranger ever calls to tell you that you're invisible, check it yourself in two minutes.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I'm sure you're probably not.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Search your business name, then ask your phone to find you by voice.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: They are counting on you being too busy to look.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Look.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And if you want to see how AI voice assistants decide who gets recommended, you can go to getmachinefound.com.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: I'm Connor, that's my system.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: I'm local, and I'll talk to you soon.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Thanks for watching.
