- 0:58Welcome to the Garage of Training podcast.
- 1:00I'm gonna be one hosts for this episode.
- 1:02My name is Bill.
- 1:03Who else is hosting?
- 1:04I'm Vicky.
- 1:05You are, you almost sound like you're awake.
- 1:08I'm so tired today.
- 1:09I'm so tired today.
- 1:11But it's good.
- 1:12I I am here and I'm ready for it.
- 1:14Hi, miss Vicky.
- 1:16We have guests.
- 1:17Yes, guests.
- 1:18We have two guests now.
- 1:20We're, we're, we're, we're playing one-on-one.
- 1:22We're not no longer, you know, able to double team or anything,
- 1:25but they have a podcast.
- 1:29They sent us the best email invite ever.
- 1:33Very jealous did they?
- 1:34Very jealous.
- 1:36Uh, which I stole liberally.
- 1:39Thank you.
- 1:39Very much.
- 1:40Changed it edited, but I paid tribute to, they have the weirdest episode numbering
- 1:45convention ever for their podcast.
- 1:48And we have a weird episode named Numbering podcast, but they also have
- 1:53the most swag I have ever seen, and you know how much swag I like to have,
- 1:57and they easily double or triple me.
- 2:01In addition, they have so many sponsors.
- 2:02They make us know that we are doing something wrong.
- 2:05With that, we have two of the hosts of the Break Fix podcast
- 2:10from Grand Touring Motorsports.
- 2:12We have the crew Chief Eric Host and Brad Host.
- 2:17Welcome to the podcast guys.
- 2:19Thanks for having us guys.
- 2:20Yeah, thank you.
- 2:22This is the Boomerang episode.
- 2:24Uh, we did one with your home court and now we get to subject
- 2:27you to our remain stupid questions.
- 2:29So strap in.
- 2:31It's the other side.
- 2:33Before we start off, Eric, what is your last name?
- 2:35Oh, you don't, you don't want that on Airs monstrosity.
- 2:40Monstrosity and of course, Brad Novak.
- 2:42Yep.
- 2:43Um, it, it's, is it, is it long, is it awkward?
- 2:47Is it It's unpronounceable long, so we'll leave it there.
- 2:51It's easier to remember that way.
- 2:53Okay.
- 2:53All right.
- 2:54Sounds good.
- 2:55Remember, remember when we started off before talking like, do you want
- 2:58to go through first names or not?
- 2:59We said no, but Hey, I, so you can edit this out.
- 3:03I also don't give out my last name on air because of opsec, something that
- 3:07Bill should be very familiar with.
- 3:08Indeed.
- 3:09Oh, what's that?
- 3:11Operational security?
- 3:12Yeah.
- 3:13Oh, okay.
- 3:14Okay.
- 3:15There you go.
- 3:16You will very rarely see it anywhere, especially, especially
- 3:20if you have a, uh, unique name.
- 3:21My name is so common they can't find me.
- 3:25Okay.
- 3:26All right, gentlemen, we have some simple questions.
- 3:30Because we're simple people.
- 3:33One of them that's a little confusing when you first try to figure it out is
- 3:37what exactly Grand Touring Motorsports is.
- 3:43It's so many things to so many people.
- 3:45It is.
- 3:46It's like it's all things to all people.
- 3:48It is.
- 3:49It's like it could be a Frisbee or it might be a restaurant flavor of ice
- 3:54cream, whatever you prefer it to be.
- 3:55Exactly.
- 3:57So I think we need to take a trip down memory lane, and for those of you out
- 4:01there listening, To this episode and haven't, you know, taken the time to
- 4:06look at our first or second, or third or maybe entire first season where we
- 4:10kind of outline what G T M is all about.
- 4:12I will fast forward you through all this.
- 4:14I'll give you the bluff, the bottom line up front.
- 4:17We started almost 20 years ago, and it's original form and it's
- 4:21modified many times since then.
- 4:23It was an Audi group.
- 4:24It was this, it was that.
- 4:25We sold parts, you know, all these kinds of things, but we've always
- 4:28been in the motor sports world.
- 4:29We just celebrated our eighth birthday, our eighth anniversary as G T M, as
- 4:35the current guys that it's in today.
- 4:38Eight years ago, we decided as a ragtag bunch of track rats to get
- 4:41together and start at a car club.
- 4:43You know, trying to keep.
- 4:44Technology in our back pocket, keep it, and also to our advantage, trying
- 4:49to connect people and say, Hey, where track of it are you gonna be at next?
- 4:52Where are you going?
- 4:52How are you doing?
- 4:53You know, do you need help?
- 4:54All these kinds of things.
- 4:54What should I buy?
- 4:55You know, that's one of our favorite sub arcs on the show.
- 4:59So the club has ebbed and flowed over the years.
- 5:02It's grown.
- 5:02We've divested into a million different things, you know?
- 5:05Now the club itself is just known as the clubhouse.
- 5:07It's its own separate, you know, entity on the web.
- 5:10We started Paddock Pal, which is a track site assistant because
- 5:13many of us are instructors.
- 5:14We started the National Motorsport Safety Association.
- 5:17We started Break Fix.
- 5:18We have our store site, as you alluded to in the intro, which is called Schwag,
- 5:22spelled S C H W A G, to make fun of the Schwab and tools that are out there.
- 5:26Mm-hmm.
- 5:27And there's a bunch of other things on the horizon.
- 5:29So if you kind of look at G T M, it went from a bunch of car enthusiasts
- 5:33to as close as we can get to a media group without going over.
- 5:40Yes.
- 5:40Because it, it's kind of when, you know, you know, but when you try to
- 5:44digest it without like the guided tour, it's, it's a little overwhelming.
- 5:50Yeah, that's right.
- 5:51So, you know, even the, and even the show itself, we wanted to do it years
- 5:56ago and, and like we talked about on our crossover episode, you know, you
- 6:00guys got a couple years on us, we had been talking about doing a podcast and
- 6:04Brad would always say, uh, who the hell wants to listen to what we have to say?
- 6:10Exactly.
- 6:10So that kept us in the written word for quite a long time.
- 6:14Mm-hmm.
- 6:14So we were writing articles, you know, trying to be the next
- 6:16jalopnik, all that kind of thing.
- 6:18And if you go back into the archives, there's like over 300 articles
- 6:21that we had written, you know, from technical to field trips to weekend
- 6:24recaps and all this kind of stuff.
- 6:26And so eventually, you know, like, Like everybody, every
- 6:30other two white guys in America.
- 6:32During Covid, we started a podcast and so our idea for season was to introduce
- 6:37ourselves to the world with our voices.
- 6:39And then we progressed into this idea that everybody has a story.
- 6:43We realized very quickly through some friends, especially one of them that
- 6:47recently passed, he kept saying, you know, there's all these stories that
- 6:49get told in the paddock that we hear about on the weekends and you get
- 6:52sick of hearing them, but they only get told in a microcosm of the world,
- 6:57you know, of the motorsports world.
- 6:58And so we decided, let's get those stories out there, let's get those two,
- 7:02our growing audience and to folks like yourselves and say, Hey, there's some
- 7:05really interesting stuff out there that you may or may not have heard of before.
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:10But we've noticed that cuz we've had a few people on and, and sometimes even though
- 7:15they're just, you know, huge amounts of information and assistance they can give.
- 7:21Sometimes you just wanna have a, a story time with whomever you're talking to cuz
- 7:25they just have stuff that if you don't.
- 7:29Record it.
- 7:29It just kind of goes away after a while.
- 7:32Exactly.
- 7:32And unfortunately the track world is so transient.
- 7:36Mm-hmm.
- 7:36We say all the time that it is a sport of convenience, not of loyalty.
- 7:40And so you look at any of these providers, whether it's h hpd junkie.com
- 7:44or Track Shaker or whatever, and you're looking for your next track
- 7:46event, you're looking at what.
- 7:48Fits my calendar, what fits my schedule.
- 7:50You don't care if it's Chin or h o d or s e c a or whoever.
- 7:55So you show up.
- 7:56Maybe you make fast friends, maybe you don't.
- 7:57So our idea was always to continue to spread motorsports, enthusiasm,
- 8:01and keep all these folks connected.
- 8:03Let's go together.
- 8:04Hey, we're gonna take a road trip to, you know, NCM or to Barber or Rhode Atlanta.
- 8:09We've done all these in the past, and we go together and you see us, you know,
- 8:12convoying down the highway, you know, with cars and trailers and everything.
- 8:16And so that's what's made it fun over the years is all the crazy
- 8:19adventures that we've gone on.
- 8:20But to your point, we saw that as people transitioned away from the
- 8:24hobby, a lot of those stories walked, walked away with him and we said,
- 8:28Hey, do you remember when Bob was here and he used to tell us about blah?
- 8:32Darn, we missed that.
- 8:33So we're trying to recapture some of that in, in what we're doing.
- 8:37We originally started trying to, uh, trying to, uh, show almost like a personal
- 8:44blog for the team, what we were doing.
- 8:46And then we realized that, you know, it's even more important to get those
- 8:50stories from our guests sometimes.
- 8:52Cuz you know, a lot of people don't realize how much fun they are or
- 8:55how, how helpful they could be or, or how silly they might be.
- 8:59Cuz you know, we're not the only people who do things wrong racing.
- 9:01So.
- 9:02Yep.
- 9:03So the little, the little known fact, the trivia part of this.
- 9:06Going back to your original question about who we are, many people in
- 9:11our circle might know this answer.
- 9:13You know, how old is G gtm?
- 9:15It goes back to our first day of high school.
- 9:18Brad sat behind me in class.
- 9:20We were put in alphabetical order and that's how we met.
- 9:23And Brad, do you want to tell the rest of that story how it goes?
- 9:27Uh, I mean, I'll paraphrase, but basically I just, I had to ask you about your
- 9:32father's nine 11 because I kept hearing it every single day when he would drop
- 9:37you off for school and it was the most amazing and awful sounding car I think
- 9:42I'd ever heard all at the same time.
- 9:44And I was like, what is the deal with that nine 11?
- 9:48I mean, the super traps are amazing and awful at the same time.
- 9:51That's all I'm gonna say.
- 9:53Nothing like a straight pipe, nine 11 reverberating off of old brownstones.
- 9:57Mm-hmm For sure.
- 9:58Indeed.
- 9:59I think it probably was good that, uh, you were sitting in front of Brad, cuz you
- 10:02might not have seen the board behind Brad.
- 10:05That is 1000% true.
- 10:08He clocks in at six four.
- 10:10So, ah, I was in six four in high school though.
- 10:13I was only like five nine or five 10 in, uh, freshman year.
- 10:20I was still shorter than you.
- 10:21So it's all good.
- 10:21Ah, yeah.
- 10:23As were most people.
- 10:24But we lovingly refer to him as the Viking, and that's also the name of his
- 10:29blog was The Viking Line, and there's a story behind that he can probably share.
- 10:33Yeah.
- 10:35Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:35We were at v i r South South course, right?
- 10:38Mm-hmm.
- 10:39And, uh, my a b s sensor failed and I hit the brakes and they locked up,
- 10:44which I wasn't, you know, accustomed to.
- 10:46And I went straight from whatever turn it was and basically just drove
- 10:51all the way down to Oaktree and I cut out probably 20% of the track.
- 10:57So they, they dubbed that the Viking line, it's the, the fastest, the fastest,
- 11:00uh, the fastest line between two points.
- 11:03That's correct.
- 11:04And we also have an annual award known as the Viking Off-Road
- 11:07Adventurer Award in honor of Brad.
- 11:10Mm-hmm.
- 11:10Oh, aw.
- 11:12So, uh, when did you start the podcast?
- 11:16The, our, our anniversary is June the 25th of 2020.
- 11:20Oh, okay.
- 11:21And so we've just celebrated two years.
- 11:23Aw.
- 11:24The yeah.
- 11:25Episode, which was awesome.
- 11:27Yes.
- 11:27And you guys inspired us, you know, since, since you liberally, you know, copied
- 11:31our intro emails, you know, we figured we could copy one of your episode formats.
- 11:35It's, it's way too much fun not to.
- 11:38Why start the podcast?
- 11:41Because we sort of saw the writing on the wall, pun intended, you know, as
- 11:46amateur journalists, you know, writing all these stories, we weren't seeing the
- 11:49same kind of trends and traffic that we wanted to see out of the written word.
- 11:54And a lot of our members, you know, we're a hundred members strong, now we know
- 11:58we've, again, we've ebbed and flowed.
- 11:59They kept saying, I'd really love to hear these stories as I'm driving to
- 12:03work, rather than reading about them.
- 12:05I just don't have the time.
- 12:06And so that was nagging at us for a while.
- 12:09And you know, we're always cautiously optimistic when we take on a new
- 12:13project and then once the wall goes over, it's just pretty much full send.
- 12:16So during Covid, we pretty much had no excuse.
- 12:19We're all sitting around on our hands going, the tracks are closed,
- 12:22especially here in the D M V, you know, our home track of Summit Point.
- 12:25We can't do anything.
- 12:26We can't go anywhere.
- 12:27We're not allowed to go to New York.
- 12:28You know, all this kind of stuff.
- 12:29So Brad said, let's just get it done.
- 12:32And we, we did a couple pilots.
- 12:35Uh, one of them went in the trash, one of them is available on YouTube as the
- 12:39original episode Zero on Eric Pilot.
- 12:42And then we got organized very quickly, you know, took inspiration from some
- 12:45other shows, yourselves included.
- 12:47And we have some mentors out there and we said, let's go e either
- 12:50we're gonna do this or we're not.
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:53And it all, and, and I was gonna say, and also before we started the
- 12:56podcast, we, in order to stay connected with the club members and everything,
- 13:00we had a series of just happy hour events, virtual Zoom, happy hours.
- 13:04And they were, they were a lot of fun and a lot of like, good stories and a
- 13:07lot of good banter going back and forth.
- 13:08And I was like, we should probably record this or stream it or something, you
- 13:12know, put it out for the club members that didn't actually sign on to hear.
- 13:16Mm-hmm.
- 13:16Uh, and then we were like, well, we can turn this into actual content
- 13:19that somebody wants to listen to.
- 13:22And it worked out.
- 13:24So far, it's working out.
- 13:26Do you enjoy it?
- 13:28You know, I do.
- 13:30I actually maybe sadistically I enjoy the editing more than I
- 13:35enjoy the recording sometimes.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:36He enjoys the technical, the technical aspects of it.
- 13:39That's, that's his bread and butter.
- 13:41Mm-hmm.
- 13:42It is, it is a, it is a constant social outlet, which is also good.
- 13:48Mm-hmm.
- 13:48Um, depending on what your job is.
- 13:51Um, and definitely keeps you connected.
- 13:53Um, what are some of the goals, um, long term for your pod?
- 13:59So, do you remember that game on the price right, where you had the
- 14:02mountain climber that would kind of go up until you told it to stop?
- 14:06Yeah.
- 14:06Well, the same is sort of true of our plan.
- 14:08We have this whole Mount Everest sort of metaphor where we've put
- 14:11certain guests up at the tippy top and we're, you know, we're at base
- 14:15camp, we're still working our way.
- 14:17And so we're trying to play this Kevin Bacon game to be like,
- 14:20well, if we get this guest, then what does that guest get us?
- 14:23And you know, the Red Paperclip thing like was on Craigslist or Facebook years ago.
- 14:26It's the same idea.
- 14:27Mm-hmm.
- 14:28So for me, the end goal is I wanna sit down and have a
- 14:32conversation with Michelle Mutton.
- 14:34She's one of my heroes.
- 14:36You know, I'm a wrc Group B, you know, that's my number one
- 14:40passion followed by TransAm Anda.
- 14:42And so, We haven't gotten there yet.
- 14:45We're gonna get there.
- 14:46We see the light, but there's a lot of people along the way.
- 14:49You don't just go to the top of Mount Everest and say, all right, cool.
- 14:52We're done.
- 14:53Have a nice day.
- 14:54You know, there is the trip down, but we don't ever wanna
- 14:57really come down, so, mm-hmm.
- 14:58We're sort of taking the zigzag approach to get there.
- 15:01But in reality our, I think one of the bigger goals is to reach.
- 15:06All the different disciplines.
- 15:08We haven't gotten there yet, right?
- 15:09We're still looking for people in, in nascar.
- 15:11We're still looking for people that are doing rally.
- 15:14We're still looking for other folks that are out there.
- 15:16Cause we wanna connect them.
- 15:17We want the, the vehicle enthusiast, right?
- 15:20That's the term.
- 15:21The vehicle enthusiasts, whether you're into boats or airplanes or
- 15:23ATVs or cars to understand, there's so many other opportunities to enjoy,
- 15:29let's call them petrol powered or even electrically powered vehicles, right?
- 15:33Mm-hmm.
- 15:34And go have fun with your friends and explore that.
- 15:36So that's still the underlying mission is to spread motorsports, enthusiasm.
- 15:40That's what GTMs been about for the last eight years.
- 15:43So, you know, we'll see where that goes.
- 15:45Right, Brad?
- 15:46Uh, yeah.
- 15:47And I mean, your, your mount adverse is a little different than mine.
- 15:50I actually want to talk to, The Clarkson Hammond or May, I don't care which one.
- 15:56So, so they're, they're on my mount.
- 15:58I don't know how we're gonna get to them because I don't, I don't know
- 16:01how many hundreds of degrees of Kevin Bacon we need to go through
- 16:03to get there, but, oh my gosh.
- 16:05I mean, maybe Rob Hollins got a connection there.
- 16:07One of our former guests, he does have, he, he is trying to line up a
- 16:11date with Patrick Dempsey, though.
- 16:12That is, that's, you know, that's not quite Mount Everest,
- 16:15but we're getting close.
- 16:16I'm looking for a date with Patrick Dempsey, but it's not the kind of
- 16:18date that Eric's talking about.
- 16:20Mm-hmm.
- 16:22Very well.
- 16:23McDreamy Mcy.
- 16:26So, um, you, you, you kind of got to something we were gonna talk about later.
- 16:32How do you feel about the, it seems like the, the harder core car
- 16:40people tend to use ways of division as opposed to ways of addition.
- 16:49Yes, I, I would agree with that statement.
- 16:52Um, but, you know, recommendations go a long way.
- 16:55So as Brad has always said, he's like, you know, you're just like your dad.
- 16:58You're, you're super well connected in, in the community.
- 17:01And it's partially because of the time I grew up in Motorsports, you know, coming
- 17:05up through P c a, the Porsche Club of America and things like that, and, and
- 17:08people that were involved, you know, in the founder's region and, and and whatnot.
- 17:13But also just being in the racing community since I was a kid.
- 17:16And so you meet a lot of people.
- 17:18I mean, spoiler alert, this will come out after it airs.
- 17:22But, you know, I've been friends with, I, I have the privilege to say I've been
- 17:26friends with Andy Pilgrim for years.
- 17:27And so making that phone call, it took me a minute to say, are we there yet?
- 17:31Is he going to say no?
- 17:34And no he didn't.
- 17:35He said, yes, absolutely.
- 17:36Let's sit down, let's have a chat about, you know, his past.
- 17:38And we had a lot of fun recording that with him.
- 17:40And it's always a pleasure to get together together with Andy.
- 17:43And we see him at SRO events and things like that.
- 17:45So the question is, You know, it becomes political at that point, right?
- 17:49Do you go to Andy and say, Hey, well you know, you know these people.
- 17:54Can you hook me up?
- 17:56And so that's always a really awkward conversation unless it
- 18:00comes up in conversation, right?
- 18:01And they bring it up.
- 18:02So I know, you know, John Jones, you're like, oh, that's awesome.
- 18:05That sounds like an amazing story.
- 18:07Do you mind, you know, making that introduction?
- 18:09And a lot of people will say yes.
- 18:11So I think that's how you get around the addition versus the division
- 18:14at that point is building your credibility, not coming off like you're
- 18:19trying to sell 'em something, cuz we're not, we're there to help them.
- 18:22We're, we're there to help shepherd their story and get it to ears that have never
- 18:26heard, you know, Andy's origin story or some of the other folks that we've
- 18:29interviewed and, and some of the ones, I won't spoil them that are coming out.
- 18:33And that's just super helpful.
- 18:36Mm-hmm.
- 18:37It's, it's, you know, everybody's like, you know, you're trying to push
- 18:43stuff on the podcast, and I'm like, well, if we made a dollar, that would
- 18:46be the first dollar, you know, and even if we do, it's only gonna make
- 18:52us dig the hole slightly slower.
- 18:54It's not gonna, you know, this is not a money making venture.
- 18:57So anyway.
- 18:59Mm-hmm.
- 18:59That is, that is a challenge I think, for every creator out there, whether
- 19:03you're a journalist, a podcast, or an artist or otherwise, is establishing your
- 19:08foothold and getting people to just go, we love what you're doing, keep doing
- 19:12it, and, and sending you money, right?
- 19:14Mm-hmm.
- 19:15Brad and I have struggled for a long time to say, are we providing
- 19:18enough value to our members?
- 19:20Are we providing enough value to our listeners and especially
- 19:22to our Patreon subscribers?
- 19:24So we hope so.
- 19:26We think that sometimes we're well over our skis and maybe it's too much.
- 19:29And to your point, they're drinking from a fire hose and they're not
- 19:32understanding what's really going on.
- 19:34And that's why we've unfortunately had to like divest at least some of
- 19:37our web properties to make things more clear as to what the message is.
- 19:41So when you're on Paddock Pal versus Nimsa versus the clubhouse, you know exactly
- 19:45where you are and why you belong there.
- 19:47But asking for money is always tough and we do appreciate it.
- 19:51You know, we never ask any of our guests for sponsorship or anything like that,
- 19:55and if something comes of it, so be it.
- 19:56That's amazing.
- 19:57You know, it's kind of icing on the cake, but we truly do do this because we
- 20:02love it and we're passionate about it.
- 20:03And unfortunately I don't have any other hobbies.
- 20:05So cars are, are my lifeblood.
- 20:08Mm-hmm.
- 20:08Yeah.
- 20:09So, uh, when it comes to Patreon, how did you get involved with that?
- 20:14It was recommended to us by some other folks, and we took a look at what some
- 20:19of the other podcasters and other people that we knew in the community were doing.
- 20:23We asked around, and many people were like, Patreon's the way to go.
- 20:26Just get it up there, get it out there, remind people of it.
- 20:29And I kept hearing about it on podcasts that I was listening to.
- 20:32Mm-hmm.
- 20:33They would always do their little pitch, Hey, you know, subscribe on
- 20:35Patreon and get behind the scenes and, and all that kind of thing.
- 20:38So Brad's the finance guy, right?
- 20:41That's what he does for a living.
- 20:42So I looked at him and said, do you think this is a viable option for us?
- 20:45And he's like, let's see what happens.
- 20:47And also, I mean, I don't know if you've got gathered this from any
- 20:52of our other, uh, episodes that you've listened to, but the club, we
- 20:55don't charge club members any fees.
- 20:57It's 100% free for them.
- 21:00So I mean, all the funding for the events and stuff that we, we've come up with,
- 21:03it's either charge on the spot for, for the event at a a, a net even, you know,
- 21:10a break even for the club or it comes out of, you know, Eric in my pocket.
- 21:14I mean, there's, there's, there was no other funding for the things
- 21:17that the club was able to put on.
- 21:19Uh, we did do a.
- 21:21It was a V M C, I forget what the acronym stands for.
- 21:23Eric, do you remember?
- 21:24Voluntary membership contribution.
- 21:27Yeah.
- 21:27So, so we did that and actually we got a lot of support from our
- 21:31membership that way, asking for them to, to voluntarily contribute versus
- 21:35saying, Hey, you have to pay dues.
- 21:37Um, so we thought Patreon was just another way for people to help support if they,
- 21:43if they could and if they wanted to without saying or demanding, Hey, if you
- 21:48wanna be a part of this, you have to.
- 21:49To pay to play.
- 21:50Mm-hmm.
- 21:50And Patreon simplified everything because the way we were doing it before was
- 21:54super clergy and spreadsheets and PayPal.
- 21:56And then we, we were tracking, we were tracking house points
- 21:59and all kinds of things.
- 22:00Oh, it was insane.
- 22:01It was just like, can we just find an automated way to do
- 22:03this and get over it again?
- 22:04We're, we're often referred to on the club side of the house as either like
- 22:09the d the club, the car club for the D O d or the car club for IT nerds.
- 22:12Cause we're extremely technologically heavy and we got a lot of
- 22:16guys that are developers and administrators and stuff like that.
- 22:19So they're like, oh yeah, use this solution.
- 22:20Oh yeah, go get this thing.
- 22:21Well make your life easier.
- 22:23And I'm in the IT world as well, so technology's always been on our side
- 22:27and we try to use it as much as we can to make things as simple as possible.
- 22:31Hmm.
- 22:33Well, um, getting, getting to that, we're gonna go off a little bit.
- 22:36Subject.
- 22:37Um, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
- 22:41You just mentioned that Brad was into finance.
- 22:44Brad, do you wanna start a little bit about your background?
- 22:47Um, Of who you are, your family life, kind of what you do, and
- 22:51your off time when you're not being a superhero racing driver.
- 22:55Uh, well, I, I've never been a racing driver.
- 22:57I think I've competed outside of autocross in one timed event.
- 23:02It was a time trial with Emera and I got first place, so I, yeah, I took my,
- 23:07I took my, my plaque and, uh, hung it on the wall, and I haven't been back
- 23:11to competitive driving, but, um, I, I mean, yeah, I work in finance right now,
- 23:17but that's definitely not my passion.
- 23:19It, it, it keeps the lights on and pays the bills, but really my
- 23:22passions are cars and music and, you know, my family life now, I've, I've
- 23:27got a wife, I've, uh, we've been married for almost three years now.
- 23:30Three years.
- 23:31Oh, 2019 to, yeah.
- 23:33They're, they're so green, bill.
- 23:35They'll grow outta it.
- 23:36They're so green.
- 23:37Oh, I get kids better.
- 23:38I have a nine, a nine and a half month old.
- 23:41Oh, yeah.
- 23:42You're not going to the racetrack anytime soon.
- 23:44No, no.
- 23:45I mean, well, we were, we were just at the racetrack.
- 23:47And let's be fair, uh, Eric and I were Watkins Glen last
- 23:51weekend for the SRO races.
- 23:52So luckily I'm very fortunate to have a supportive wife who
- 23:56supports my hobbies and my passions.
- 23:59Um, so whenever we, we can, you know, get an opportunity to
- 24:02go out, she, she's all for it.
- 24:05Mm.
- 24:06Was, uh, was Black Kings Glen like a sauna?
- 24:10It actually wasn't terrible.
- 24:11Oh, it was?
- 24:12I mean, it was hot.
- 24:13It was hot than for change.
- 24:14It was hotter than October when I'm usually there.
- 24:16Mm-hmm.
- 24:17But it wasn't, it wasn't miserable.
- 24:19Miserable.
- 24:19It wasn't like going to v i r in August.
- 24:23And you, we, we sort of overlooked the, the sweltering heat of, you know, of
- 24:27Lake Seneca because we were there with some first time folks that had never
- 24:32been to a professional race before.
- 24:34And so their excitement got us excited.
- 24:37So you kind of forgot that it was 94 degrees and 70% humidity.
- 24:41Oh, wow.
- 24:42True, true.
- 24:43You felt like bacon last weekend.
- 24:46Oh.
- 24:46So how about you, uh, Eric?
- 24:48Crew, chief Barrack.
- 24:50Well, you know, I grew up a poor child on a porch in Alabama.
- 24:52No, I'm just kidding.
- 24:54Well, walked uphill both ways.
- 24:56Both ways.
- 24:57So, you know, I am a first generation, my parents are both immigrants, came
- 25:02over from Italy in the seventies.
- 25:04I, I'm a Maryland, I'm a Maryland native, which is very rare cuz I don't meet
- 25:08any other people that are from Maryland unless they're from the eastern shore.
- 25:10Mm-hmm.
- 25:11Everybody's a transplant around here.
- 25:12I said Brad is a Maryland native.
- 25:14So I'll, I'll give you credit.
- 25:15There's two of us at least that said, you know, my car, I.
- 25:23Uh, I don't wanna call it addiction goes way back, goes back to my grandparents,
- 25:26but I'll, I'll table that for the moment.
- 25:28But in my personal life, you know, I've got two little girls, they're
- 25:32eight and five, uh, sneak preview.
- 25:34My eldest will be on an episode here in right before back to school called,
- 25:39can You Explain It to a third grader?
- 25:41So that's gonna be a real fun.
- 25:43My wife and I have been together, uh, 18 years.
- 25:48I don't know, we lose count after a while.
- 25:50We don't think about it.
- 25:50We've been married forever.
- 25:53So, you know, we had kids a little later.
- 25:55You know, we enjoyed a lot of life traveling, things like that.
- 25:58Uh, to Brad's point, you know, it is my vocation.
- 26:00It's not my passion.
- 26:02You know, cars always have been, and again, that stems from my grandparents.
- 26:05Um, you know, post-war.
- 26:08My grandfather was a chauffeur for the Belgium Embassy.
- 26:11And so my dad grew up around, you know, big Cadillacs and all these
- 26:14American cars that the, that the, uh, ambassadors would drive around in.
- 26:19And so my grandfather was responsible for maintaining the cars, cleaning
- 26:22the cars, driving the cars.
- 26:23So my dad got hooked and I got hooked by way of him.
- 26:26He started autocross as soon as he could, started driving just like I
- 26:30did at almost 13 years old on a VW Beetle, you know, stuff like that.
- 26:34And, you know, my dad never wanted me to get into racing, but he made
- 26:38the mistake of putting me behind the wheel of a go-kart when I was five.
- 26:41And it was your fault, dad, all your fault, all downhill from there.
- 26:45Um, I've cart raced all over the country.
- 26:48It's allowed me to see almo.
- 26:50It's all but seven states now.
- 26:54Right.
- 26:54And then Brad and I ter crossed in high school and college, and autocross
- 26:58in our area dried up pretty quickly.
- 27:00There's no more lots that are any good and nobody wants to, well,
- 27:03except for the S E C A guys, nobody wants to stand in line for six
- 27:06hours for three runs at FedEx Field.
- 27:08So I gave up on that and went road racing the year after my dad passed away.
- 27:13And so I've been carrying that torch, uh, ever since.
- 27:17Hmm.
- 27:17I, I think my favorite part of that story is that your grandfather worked
- 27:20on big Cadillacs and, and, you know, in these large American luxury cars.
- 27:26And what does your father gravitate to?
- 27:28Rocco's and golfs and, oh, Chicos and Audis and the exact opposite.
- 27:33But you know what?
- 27:34Gay American sedans, grand.
- 27:36My grandfather had some cool cars, though.
- 27:38I mean, except for the omni the Horizon.
- 27:41Ugh, whatever.
- 27:42But he had stuff like, you know, like the Beetle, they had a Dodge Dart,
- 27:45I think, I believe it was a stinger.
- 27:47They had a Capri.
- 27:49They had a, uh, what year?
- 27:51What year?
- 27:51Capri?
- 27:52A 76 Capri and Opal.
- 27:55Manta.
- 27:57I mean all, just all rocco's, all sorts of stuff.
- 27:59I mean, they were never one to buy, like the regular old whatever.
- 28:02And I was fortunate to drive one of his Alpha Romeos when
- 28:05I went to Italy one year.
- 28:06Oh.
- 28:06To visit them.
- 28:07So that was pretty cool.
- 28:09Oh, they're still in Italy?
- 28:11Uh, they're, they are very, very old.
- 28:13But yes, they still live in Italy.
- 28:15We, we may have a very, very bad idea for you after the podcast anyway.
- 28:21Oh, okay.
- 28:24Anyway, so, so driving wise and, and car-wise, how, um, do you guys have any,
- 28:30um, driving, training, driving experience?
- 28:33I, it sounds like Brad is more the high performance driving and car guy, but
- 28:39uh, you know, he did some auto crossing.
- 28:42Yep.
- 28:42So Brad is an instructor.
- 28:43He is an MSF level two.
- 28:45He's been through S C C certification.
- 28:47I'm speaking on his behalf.
- 28:48I have those certifications as well.
- 28:50I've gone through B S R, I've gone through a bunch of other, uh,
- 28:53certifications for different groups.
- 28:55Uh, right now I'm currently the chief instructor for emra.
- 28:58I've been a time trialer for years, both between Emera and S E C A.
- 29:01I've cart raced all over the country in endurance, carting and sprint
- 29:04carting, uh, autocross and I.
- 29:08I didn't do any pro solos.
- 29:09That was always my dad's thing.
- 29:10I didn't like the Christmas tree start, although I'd driven
- 29:13some of his pro solo cars.
- 29:14And you, you ran timing when you were about 10 too?
- 29:17That's correct.
- 29:17I did timing for W D C R S C A, ESCA pca, Potomac, and other regions and
- 29:23a bunch of others from the, from I was in the timing trailer from
- 29:26eight years old up until college.
- 29:29So I did a lot of timing and scoring.
- 29:32If you could talk somebody into allowing you to use that and
- 29:35Scrabble, you'd be unstoppable.
- 29:37It was awesome.
- 29:37But you know what it afforded me, bill, it afforded me these weird instances at
- 29:41the end of the day where they're doing fun runs and somebody slides a set of keys to
- 29:45you at 13 years old and says, go have fun.
- 29:47Mm-hmm.
- 29:48And you're like, uh, what's this, what's this for?
- 29:51They're like, just go drive.
- 29:52Have fun.
- 29:54So I got to drive a ton of cars before I was legally allowed
- 29:57to drive at Autocrosses, cuz we were there every weekend.
- 30:00Brad knows.
- 30:01He's like, what?
- 30:01What are you doing in that car now?
- 30:03Uh, and, and, and the timing and scoring also afforded you the ability to have
- 30:09the most difficult and antiquated and just time consuming, timing
- 30:16stressful and scoring stressful for our virtual no money racing league.
- 30:21That is true.
- 30:22It, that you could take the boy out of the timing booth, but you can't
- 30:25take the timekeeper out of the boy.
- 30:26Right?
- 30:27Oh geez.
- 30:29For sure.
- 30:31So, gentlemen, what, uh, what's this, what's the fleet right now?
- 30:36What kind of cars are we into?
- 30:37What are we, what are we driving?
- 30:38What are we pursuing?
- 30:39Any, uh, any white whales that we need to get to?
- 30:45I mean, if, if you're asking, you know, what's it on my bucket list?
- 30:49Oh man, this, this could be a long episode, so we'll go with Brad.
- 30:54Well, the current fleet is a Toyota Tundra tow vehicle, and
- 30:58then a Volkswagen Mark, five R 32.
- 31:01Oh, nice.
- 31:01Um, but I'm rethinking the whole thing now that I've got a kid and the tundra's
- 31:06just an extended cab, so it doesn't have much room for the car seat and the family.
- 31:11Mm-hmm.
- 31:12So, I don't know, I, I'm contemplating like, yeah, he's contemplating a Nissan
- 31:17gtr because that is family friendly.
- 31:20Well, no, that's, that's probably the white whale.
- 31:23But like, more immediate is something like, uh, an RS
- 31:27seven or, you know, something.
- 31:30I can consolidate everything into one vehicle and just have one fun vehicle
- 31:34I can track once or twice a year.
- 31:36Something you can fit into as well.
- 31:38Yes.
- 31:38Yeah.
- 31:39I, I can't do a new Honda Civic type R because it's moi kinno.
- 31:44One car to rule them all.
- 31:46Yeah, right.
- 31:48Well though, isn't that always the question though?
- 31:50If I could, if you could have one vehicle to do everything
- 31:53you wanted, what would it be?
- 31:55The Pontiac.
- 31:56Aztec?
- 31:56Yeah.
- 31:57Do you, do you go to, do you go to the garage to fix your race
- 32:00car and grab the Swiss Army knife?
- 32:02No.
- 32:02You go and grab the tool you need.
- 32:05More tools, the better.
- 32:08Oh, well the problem is when I, when I go to the garage to work on the race
- 32:10car, I never have the right tools.
- 32:12So I'm always buying more tools.
- 32:14Exactly.
- 32:15Perfect.
- 32:15It's just like I'm, I'm buying Eric more tools cause he's
- 32:18the one that worked on my car.
- 32:20That's very true.
- 32:21That's very true.
- 32:22Hence the name Brake and Fix.
- 32:24But you know, we'll leave it where it is.
- 32:26Is, is one of you break and the other one fixed?
- 32:28I'm just saying that is, that is correct.
- 32:30Okay.
- 32:30All right.
- 32:31Would you venture to guess who is who?
- 32:33Uh, I'm thinking let's just be, you know, Brad starts with B so we'll go
- 32:39with, we'll, nothing personal, Brad.
- 32:43That's okay.
- 32:44I mean, you've heard the stories of the Viking line and stuff like that.
- 32:46Yeah, of course.
- 32:47I'm the one that breaks things.
- 32:49Do you want to feel better about your Viking line?
- 32:52Always.
- 32:53Okay.
- 32:53So have you ever been to New Hampshire Motorsports Park?
- 32:56I can't say that I have.
- 32:58Okay.
- 32:58So it's uh, the NASCAR oval and then if you take about, hmm, almost halfway
- 33:06around, if you're running the road course, you make a right hand turn, like a sharp
- 33:10right hand turn and go up the hill and there's like a road course and then it
- 33:12comes back down like 300 yards past there.
- 33:16So we're at our first New Hampshire Motorsports Park and everybody, let's
- 33:21say that everybody's doing laps like a minute, 40 something, whatever,
- 33:27something, let's just pick a number.
- 33:28Minute 40, and then Vicky pops in there my first time at this track.
- 33:32That's right.
- 33:33Ever.
- 33:33Vicky pops on the scoring for Friday practice with a 32.
- 33:39Not a 1 32, that is a 32.
- 33:43And we're like, that is quite the lap.
- 33:45It is quite the lap.
- 33:46And, uh, Vicky, would you care to explain?
- 33:50So this particular track, when you take the really hard right turn, it goes
- 33:55through a set of fences that goes uphill.
- 33:59Um, and then kind of wraps around.
- 34:02But I, I'd never been to the track.
- 34:04I didn't see the track map, you know, I didn't know.
- 34:06So the, the front part, Really wasn't blocked off.
- 34:11So I just did the loop.
- 34:14I did the loop.
- 34:15I, I omitted the whole going through the, the second part of the track,
- 34:20which was uphill and into the, you know, through the fencing.
- 34:23It's like a bottleneck.
- 34:24It's really awkward.
- 34:25It's such an awkward track.
- 34:27Uh, everything is bottled neck there.
- 34:29And, uh, and I just didn't think that was part of the track.
- 34:32It just didn't look like it should be part of the track.
- 34:34It was part of the track.
- 34:35So yeah, I just decided not to include that part of the track in my lap.
- 34:39And I just went straight and nobody seemed cared.
- 34:42Straight seemed board.
- 34:44No, but nobody really cared, I don't think.
- 34:46No, no.
- 34:46The corner workers cared a lot.
- 34:48Did they?
- 34:49I don't think their, I don't think their eyes blinked for about a half an hour.
- 34:52And then the next day for the race, there was a whole lot more Jersey
- 34:55barriers crossing the the track to make sure this wasn't possible anymore.
- 35:00Yep, yep.
- 35:03Part of the fun, whatever.
- 35:05Moving on.
- 35:06Anyway, so, so I guess if we rewind.
- 35:09Two, your two questions ago about cars and fleet.
- 35:12Do you want me to answer that for time?
- 35:13Oh yes, yes.
- 35:14It's still there.
- 35:15See, I'm gonna answer for Eric Fiat 1 24 at Barth, you know, or a Dodge Viper.
- 35:23I know Dodge Viper's on his bucket list.
- 35:25Is it?
- 35:25Ah.
- 35:25I recently drove one for an extended period of time.
- 35:28I'm Congress.
- 35:28You drove an older one though.
- 35:29You didn't drive.
- 35:30Did you meet your hero?
- 35:31The usual special, you know, I've met a lot of my heroes, smokey and the
- 35:35Bandit, Transams, Reno, R five Turbos, 9 11, 9 30, turbos, all sorts of stuff
- 35:41that I'm just like, yeah, I'm good.
- 35:42You can keep it, you know?
- 35:43It's like somebody else's kids, they're fun to play with, but you
- 35:45know, it's good when they go home.
- 35:46What about.
- 35:47What about a smoking the band at TransAm Omo?
- 35:51So this one was a hot rotted engine by a friend of mine that actually
- 35:55went to school in Morrisville.
- 35:57So he was making well over 400.
- 35:58Mm-hmm.
- 35:59And it still was not fun to drive.
- 36:01Ah.
- 36:01So, no.
- 36:05So that said, for anybody that watches our behind the scenes videos, you'll see
- 36:09one of my cars is always over my shoulder.
- 36:11I've inherited that from my dad.
- 36:12It's a wide body portion, 9 14 6 that I'm working on.
- 36:16Okay.
- 36:16And it doesn't have a six in it anymore.
- 36:18It's actually got a 20 valve turbo, four cylinder Volkswagen
- 36:21engine in it, which is going to be more reliable and more drivable.
- 36:24Mm-hmm.
- 36:25Than the 9 64 twin spark that was in it.
- 36:27So, but that's a 1800 pound car with me in it.
- 36:30Former national pro solo champion car.
- 36:32So yeah, there's a lot of history in what we call the Batmobile.
- 36:36Mm-hmm.
- 36:36Then I have what makes roughly 400 horsepower Audi, t t time
- 36:41attack, time trials, car.
- 36:43I've got a split personality, G t I VR six that I share with my sister.
- 36:48We, I've got a 2003 golf VR six, uh, estate, which is
- 36:54a, a complete Euro spec car.
- 36:56I've got a Diesel Grand Cherokee, which is, you know,
- 36:59they only made for two years.
- 37:00Those are a lot of fun.
- 37:01My wife drives a spaceship and what else do I got in there?
- 37:06I'm sorry.
- 37:08Oh, and there's a Lotus seven.
- 37:09Yeah, that, yeah.
- 37:12Yeah, we don't, I don't think about that one too much.
- 37:16All right.
- 37:16So, uh, where do, where do you store.
- 37:19So everybody asked me that question.
- 37:21The cars are on rotation.
- 37:23Uh, sometimes they live here, sometimes they don't.
- 37:26Uh, sometimes they sit outside my driveway.
- 37:28You could land a helicopter on.
- 37:30So I have a lot of room.
- 37:31I purposely, when we expanded it, I, my wife thought I was crazy.
- 37:35I went to a Target and I measured the parking spots.
- 37:38I even had little parking bumpers in my driveway.
- 37:40It is exactly seven target spaces wide.
- 37:43And I wanna paint the lines and she continues to not allow me to.
- 37:46But, uh, it's pretty big on its width.
- 37:49And then, you know, there's the depth to go along with it too.
- 37:51So you can park, you can park four cars next to each other, the other way.
- 37:55So it's a four by seven driveway if you wanna do the math.
- 37:57It's pretty big with the trailer, correct?
- 38:00With my two trailers.
- 38:01With my trailers and every in the driveway and everything else.
- 38:03Yeah.
- 38:04It's big, so, right.
- 38:06Um, so any goals and dreams, bucket list items, tracks,
- 38:12series, cars, races, events.
- 38:18Well.
- 38:20Well, I'm gonna scratch one off the list.
- 38:22Next year we're going to the hundredth anniversary of Lamont's.
- 38:25Wow.
- 38:25And then I, I plan to be at the hundredth running of Lamont's too,
- 38:28which is 10 years from next year.
- 38:30So I wanna do it twice.
- 38:32Uh, tracks that I wanna drive.
- 38:35You know, we've joked for years about packing a car trailer
- 38:37and going to Laguna Seka.
- 38:38I've been to a TransAm race there.
- 38:40Um, or Grandam race there rather.
- 38:43So that was, that's good.
- 38:44A lot of the West Coast tracks don't get me as excited.
- 38:46I've done a ton of the East Coast ones.
- 38:49I mean, Brad's been on a lot of the adventures that I've been on.
- 38:52I would love to do, you know, Montro Blanc or Road America or
- 38:55any of the ones up there that we haven't really been able to reach?
- 38:58You know, those are been on our Cannonball list, Cannonball run list for a while.
- 39:03I'm trying to think.
- 39:04Cars.
- 39:06God, there's so many.
- 39:06I mean, just like my fleet now, it's collect, like collecting matchbox cars.
- 39:10I feel like I need to go to Al-Anon meetings.
- 39:12Like, you know, hi, I've got a problem.
- 39:14I collect cars, so I You collect Mark four Volkswagen cars.
- 39:17Well, you know, yeah, I'm starting to, I don't know.
- 39:20I'm starting to thin those out too.
- 39:21I need to own an Italian car before I die.
- 39:23I, I keep saying that.
- 39:26Whatever that means.
- 39:27I don't know yet.
- 39:28Find need.
- 39:30It's a, it, it is a personal want.
- 39:32Okay.
- 39:32Like, I want to own an Italian car.
- 39:34I need to own an Italian car.
- 39:36Okay.
- 39:36He would be a very bad Italian if he did not own an Italian
- 39:40car at least once in his life.
- 39:41I would be remiss.
- 39:42Yes.
- 39:43Yeah.
- 39:43He would be remiss.
- 39:45Every petrolhead must have an alpha.
- 39:48Exactly.
- 39:48You get it.
- 39:49Yeah, it's right.
- 39:50Clarkson says that all the time.
- 39:52Mm-hmm.
- 39:52I am a big fan of the GTV six, although, ugh, these days, I don't know.
- 39:56I'm getting parts for those.
- 39:57But, uh, anyway, other things on that list?
- 40:01I mean, for me, I don't see an end to it.
- 40:04I don't think there's one thing I wanna do because there's so many
- 40:07things that I still want to do.
- 40:09I mean, honestly, as a kid, I wanted to be a rally driver.
- 40:12Still haven't checked that off the list yet.
- 40:14Unfortunately.
- 40:14Tim O'Neil, if you're listening, your school is way too expensive,
- 40:17so I haven't signed up yet.
- 40:19It's just, I'd rather go to Skippy School or one of the other ones
- 40:23for the same price or for less.
- 40:25I mean, I don't know.
- 40:25It's just, it's a pill to swallow, to go to, to go to rally school.
- 40:29And, you know, I think I was born under the wrong star.
- 40:33Uh, secretly I think I would've survived really, really well during the, during
- 40:37the sixties in Detroit, you know, alongside of DeLorean and a lot of other
- 40:40folks that were coming up in that era.
- 40:42So, I dunno, what about you, Brad?
- 40:46Uh, tracks that I want to drive, definitely Laguna Seka Road America.
- 40:51I've been trying to convince Eric to commission a car for Pike's Peak.
- 40:55Mm-hmm.
- 40:56But he doesn't seem to think that we're qualified for something like that.
- 40:58I would love to, to compete for Pike's Peak.
- 41:02I, but you see, that's what you have to add.
- 41:03Because Hertz will give us a car we can drive Pike's Peak.
- 41:06It's not a big deal.
- 41:07No, no, no, no.
- 41:08I wanna drive Pikes Peak at speed without oncoming traffic.
- 41:12Uh, a racetrack that we always talk about all the time is brands.
- 41:15Hats.
- 41:16Hats, yeah.
- 41:16Mm-hmm.
- 41:17In Britain, uh, cars.
- 41:21I mean, after I drove the Viper and I drove our buddy's C eight, I don't know
- 41:27that super, super fast cars are for me, especially sports cars, just cause
- 41:31I don't really fit in them properly.
- 41:33So it's not a very enjoyable experience.
- 41:35But fast sedans, I mean, you, you got me with the like an RS seven
- 41:39or an Alpha Romeo, Julia Quadri Folio, uh, or something like that.
- 41:44I'd love to get one of those.
- 41:46And of course the dream car would be a C7 R.
- 41:48Yeah.
- 41:49Wow.
- 41:49I'd love to, I'd love to take a C C7 R around Laguna and v i r.
- 41:53Oh man, that would, I mean, if you're gonna do that, then I'm noses to
- 41:56tail with you in an S SLS Mercedes.
- 41:58All right.
- 41:59Cause Well, okay, well we're gonna do that.
- 42:00We're gonna also have to do Watkins Gwen in a, in an R eight and a Viper Viper.
- 42:06Well, we've, we've got a question for you for that, for later.
- 42:08So you're both pretty well, thank you.
- 42:14Aw.
- 42:17Sorry, I'm sitting here looking at the Rocco.
- 42:19I got, I got, went down a rabbit hole with this Rocco Rocco's not on the list.
- 42:25I, I know there's no terms.
- 42:26I know, but what don't, don't you blaspheme know.
- 42:29The thing was, the thing was, is that this, this whole interview
- 42:33has brought up like a whole, um, flashback history at Flash.
- 42:39Yeah.
- 42:39It was a flashbacks to high school and just post high school when I
- 42:43had a friend who was Italian who drove a Rocco and uh, and I had
- 42:48completely forgotten about the Rocco.
- 42:51And then I'm just wondering, My God, I, I, I like whatever happened to this car
- 42:57and then like a, like a rabbit hole just began just to start, and I apologize
- 43:01because sorry, with me, come back.
- 43:02So the sec, the secret trivia undertone there, why I, well, not
- 43:05only because I grew up in the back of Rocco's, is it was designed by
- 43:09Giro and I haven't found anything that he has penned that I don't like.
- 43:13Right.
- 43:14So, name something and I'm good with it, whether it's the DeLorean, the
- 43:17BMWs, you know, all, all those cars.
- 43:20I'm good with all of them.
- 43:21Right, right.
- 43:22I didn't know the AKA was a vw.
- 43:24I, I was not aware of that, but okay.
- 43:27So, uh, Racing philosophies.
- 43:29This is one of my favorite questions.
- 43:32When you get on the track and, you know, what do you tell yourself or when you're
- 43:38helping other people, is there like this, go-to phrase that, that, you know, Eric
- 43:43is already laughing, so I know he has one.
- 43:46I I know what Eric's phrase is.
- 43:48Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 43:49The gas pedal man, you know, I, I got to the point when, when, because I was
- 43:54a woman on the track, and especially when I'm racing with like a hundred
- 43:59some cars, uh, my motto became a.
- 44:03Damn it.
- 44:03I paid to be here too when I'm telling myself so, which is encouraging me
- 44:09to push further and not letting these people muscle me out of my spots.
- 44:13Mm-hmm.
- 44:13What is yours, Eric?
- 44:16Uh, I, I'm gonna try and answer this question for him.
- 44:18I know he's gonna answer anyway, but he's got two philosophies.
- 44:21The first one is just send it, and then the second one
- 44:23is, today's a good day to die.
- 44:25Oh, okay.
- 44:27Playing on battle cry the whole way.
- 44:29Every time I get into the right seat with a student, today is a good day to die.
- 44:34Fantastic.
- 44:36That, that's pretty good.
- 44:37Brad, do you have one or do you have one When you're, uh, like in, like a
- 44:40student's coming in and When, when I'm going out with a student, my, my battle
- 44:45cry is always, please just get back to the paddock for the next session.
- 44:51Just, it's only 20 minutes.
- 44:52Just make it to the next session.
- 44:54Just make it to the next session.
- 44:57I had my, I had my first mechanical failure with, uh, when
- 45:00I was out as a, uh, instructor.
- 45:03Thankfully it was an easy mechanical failure and I was with probably one of
- 45:06the best drivers I've ever been with.
- 45:08And that was so happy.
- 45:11Yes.
- 45:11I had a student tap the wall once at Dominion.
- 45:15Ooh, that was fun.
- 45:16So Brad's, one of Brad's other phrases used to be My mechanic is
- 45:20Fantastic, which is a quote from Ari Vaan from back in the Group B days.
- 45:25He used to say that all the time.
- 45:26My mechanic is fantastic.
- 45:28So what, uh, were some of the most memorable in general mishaps or, uh, most
- 45:37fantastic, fantastic code moments, right?
- 45:39Code bra.
- 45:40Oh, that's awesome.
- 45:41Code brown moments that you've had while instructing.
- 45:45Oh, while instructing.
- 45:47Oh, while we're instructing.
- 45:48Wow.
- 45:50Um, I mean, I've had students go off, I had the student at Dominion.
- 45:53She, she tapped the wall her.
- 45:56The back end of her three 70 got loose and it just, so it's a three 50 now?
- 46:03Yeah.
- 46:03It's a, it's a 3 22 now.
- 46:053 22 0.5.
- 46:06No, it's a, but it, it got loose and tapped the wall, scraped up her bumper.
- 46:10She didn't care.
- 46:10We went in, you know, just cuz you're supposed to after you go off and
- 46:14they're like, car's okay you guys okay?
- 46:17Have fun.
- 46:17We went right back out.
- 46:18She finished the day.
- 46:20So the story I'm gonna tell most of our members will expect me to tell.
- 46:24So I'm gonna tell it again for the thousandth time because I think it's
- 46:27one of my most memorable stories.
- 46:29And it dovetails off of your previous question Bill, which is another saying.
- 46:32I used to tell Brad all the time when he would say, oh, I think, you know,
- 46:35there's a little shimmy in the car.
- 46:37I think something's wrong.
- 46:38You know, you need to go drive it and tell me.
- 46:40I'd be like, dude, drive it till it's broken, and then
- 46:42we know what to fix, right?
- 46:43Just get it done.
- 46:44But v i r.
- 46:46I'm at an Audi Club event and I'm coaching in a T T R S.
- 46:50It's towards the end of the weekend.
- 46:52You know, this guy's doing, uh, this guy's doing really well.
- 46:55It's a quick car, whatever, and, you know, he is talking to me and
- 46:58this and that and he go, he had just told me like the lap before.
- 47:01He goes, you know, I, I've been thinking about it.
- 47:02I gotta be really careful.
- 47:04I gotta slow my hands down.
- 47:05I'm like, oh yeah, really?
- 47:06Why?
- 47:07He goes, well, you know, the TTR SS have a tendency, like the transmission will
- 47:11jam up if you try to shift it too quickly.
- 47:13And some people will miss fourth gear.
- 47:14And I'm like, okay, cool.
- 47:16So what does he do on the subsequent lap turns 17 hog pen.
- 47:20He grabs second gear.
- 47:21Does like 15,000 rpm.
- 47:24It was available and yeah, it was cool, you know, whatever car took it, he
- 47:28puts it immediately into fourth gear and he's like, do you think it's okay?
- 47:31And I'm like, well, I don't see any smoke and I don't hear anything.
- 47:34And no pistons came through this, through the, through the hood.
- 47:37So send it.
- 47:37Let's go right down and right down the front, straight away.
- 47:41Buck 35 into turn one.
- 47:43No problem.
- 47:44Come out of turn.
- 47:44One car's running great.
- 47:46Two turns two, three nascar, lower s's.
- 47:48And then the car starts bucking violently, right?
- 47:52And I'm just like, oh man.
- 47:53He's like, do you think we should pull over?
- 47:54I'm like, immediately, pull over now.
- 47:56Right?
- 47:56Something's wrong.
- 47:58So we, we pull over and I look at, we're right at the flagger station, at the
- 48:03exit of the S's, right before you go into the upper S'S and the flaggers like.
- 48:08Y'all know you're on fire.
- 48:10And I'm like, no.
- 48:10What?
- 48:11I'm like, excuse me.
- 48:12He's like, you've been on fire for three turns.
- 48:14And I'm like, what?
- 48:15He's like, get out the car.
- 48:17And I'm like, okay.
- 48:17So we get out of the car and he, he literally, and this is the day
- 48:21I became a volunteer firefighter.
- 48:23Oh, okay.
- 48:24And I'm like, what do you want us to do?
- 48:25And he's like, well, you can come up here and get the fire extinguisher.
- 48:29I'm like, excuse me.
- 48:30He's like, come on up here and get it.
- 48:31And I'm like, ok.
- 48:33So I run up and then my student, meanwhile I wasn't looking my back turn as I'm
- 48:38running back with the fire extinguisher, which was not my job, but you know, I'm
- 48:41like, whatever, volunteer firefighter for the day, he opens the hood.
- 48:45That's, that's good.
- 48:46And no, it was not good stuff.
- 48:48It was not good.
- 48:48Good.
- 48:49Sure.
- 48:49Nobbled, that tt, there was not enough fire extinguisher
- 48:53to salvage that, that motor.
- 48:55And then it got better.
- 48:56Right.
- 48:57Brad?
- 49:00Remember the giant trailer swap?
- 49:02Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:02So there was another car that had broken down.
- 49:04It was an E four to six M three, you know, cuz that's what they do.
- 49:07What?
- 49:07Uh, I think, I think he had fire issue too and he was leaking oil
- 49:10all over the place and everything.
- 49:11So we loaded him up onto Eric's trailer earlier, before the the T T R S broke.
- 49:18Uh, and because I was gonna take him, so my car was already loaded cause
- 49:21I was getting ready to leave cuz that's what I do early on a Sunday.
- 49:24I like to go home.
- 49:25And then, so this, we loaded this guy up on Eric's trailer
- 49:28and then I take him away.
- 49:30Eric was gonna tow my trailer because meanwhile, Eric's car, Eric wasn't
- 49:34using his trailer cuz his car was broken and there was no, I had the BMW and
- 49:38my sister drove No, no, no, no, no.
- 49:39You had, you had the, the, uh, TT I think Cuz you was going home.
- 49:43No, no, I was the M three.
- 49:45I had the M three there.
- 49:46No, the TT went home with the N G P.
- 49:49The white tt, the one that blew up did.
- 49:51But my car, no, no, no.
- 49:53Your car, your car went home with ngp.
- 49:56Uh, something was wrong with it cause Oh yeah, maybe that's right.
- 49:59I don't know.
- 50:00There was an open trailer.
- 50:00But anyway, it became this whole Chinese fire drill.
- 50:02Yeah, yeah.
- 50:03With trailers and cars and people going in directions they shouldn't
- 50:05have been going and, yeah.
- 50:06Yeah.
- 50:07So I took, I took home and E 46, M three with Eric's trailer.
- 50:10Uh, a couple of our club members took home the Eric's student, uh, with their
- 50:15trailer for some reason they didn't have, or they, they pulled their car off the
- 50:18trailer cuz it was out of all our cars.
- 50:19It was the only car that was street legal.
- 50:21So they drove their car behind their trailer, towing this person
- 50:24that they've never met before.
- 50:26Back to every, all signs were going to ngp.
- 50:29Apparently we were all going to the same place.
- 50:31My, the punchline is my trailer is still stained from that bmw and every
- 50:35time I unload it, I curse Bradford.
- 50:38What did you do to my trailer?
- 50:40Oh wow.
- 50:41You're welcome.
- 50:42What?
- 50:42That thing was leaking.
- 50:43I lobed it.
- 50:45It'll never rust.
- 50:49That I, I was gonna say, the only other story that's a lot of fun is
- 50:52changing three axles in between three autocross runs at a Corvette Club event.
- 50:57That was pretty good.
- 51:01So, all right, so we've got a, uh, we've got a traditional
- 51:04question before we get to, oh boy.
- 51:05We're, we're gonna start the, start the episode soon.
- 51:08Um, so these are, these are the intro anyway, so good, bad, the ugly.
- 51:16These are for people that are going to get started in high performance
- 51:20driving, maybe a track day, maybe a race, whatever, autocross doesn't matter.
- 51:25Something good things that they should do, or things that you've done in
- 51:29the past that worked bad would be things that they should not do or
- 51:33things that did not work for you.
- 51:34And ugly is just an opportunity for story time.
- 51:42The good is that Motorsports is one of the most open and accessible sports period.
- 51:52So if you look at it, it has the potential to probably be one of the
- 51:56most diverse sports on the planet too.
- 51:58And I lumped that in with baseball and basketball and football and
- 52:01all sorts of stick and ball games.
- 52:03There is an opportunity for.
- 52:05Able bodied, peop able bodied people, disabled people, people of color,
- 52:10race, it doesn't matter, right?
- 52:11Motorsports is non-discriminatory.
- 52:13When you're behind the wheel, it's cars and you're having fun and all that.
- 52:17There's so many different disciplines to motorsport.
- 52:19You need to find the one that suits you, right?
- 52:22We talk a lot and we favor track.
- 52:24I mean, I love rally, but we grew up in carting, right?
- 52:27Carting is a great gateway to other things.
- 52:30You know, if you're gonna follow the progression model, then you go to
- 52:32autocross, then you go to de and then maybe you find yourself saying, you know,
- 52:37I want to go to Drift, or I wanna go to club racing, or, or whatever have you.
- 52:40So there's so many different ways you can go, whether it's open wheel,
- 52:44closed wheel two-wheeled, four wheeled.
- 52:46I mean, again, it, it, the paddock is open to everyone.
- 52:49So what I, what we generally tell people is run what you run.
- 52:54Make sure you've got tires that have some tread on them, and, you know,
- 52:59put new pads on and brake fluid and just learn to drive what you learned.
- 53:05In driver's ed is not what you're gonna learn at any motorsports discipline.
- 53:09The foundations are similar across the board, the basics
- 53:12of what you need to know.
- 53:13So I think that's the good.
- 53:15Mm-hmm.
- 53:18What about the bad?
- 53:19Uh, for bad?
- 53:21I was just thinking it was about this button.
- 53:23Um, well, so is this advice that we're trying to give somebody or?
- 53:29Sure.
- 53:30Okay.
- 53:32You are not Sena or Michael Schumacher, so don't come to the track expecting to put
- 53:38down the same lab times that you saw on a leaderboard, somewhere on a forum that
- 53:44you were reading before your track event.
- 53:46Come there expecting to learn, expecting to be humbled, uh, and be
- 53:51open-minded to constructive criticism and education because you do not know
- 53:58anything when you go to the track.
- 54:00And your best friend, your best friend is time.
- 54:04Track time experience.
- 54:05It's your, it's your enemy too.
- 54:07But to dovetail off of what Brad said, I think the other thing is with
- 54:11humbling, if you haven't ever been passed by a Miata on a track day,
- 54:16you're not doing something right.
- 54:17That's my philosophy.
- 54:18You, you have a lot to learn still.
- 54:20Mm-hmm.
- 54:22I can see that.
- 54:23What about story time, things that you've seen, things that you've, especially if
- 54:27it was like early in your career or early in someone else's career since we never
- 54:32did anything wrong when we were learning.
- 54:33No, no.
- 54:34Not never.
- 54:35My, my favorite story times are always when we go to load a broken car on
- 54:39a trailer and we get pushing the vehicle, we're right at the trailer,
- 54:43and then somebody pops their head up, is the trailer hooked up to the truck?
- 54:46Boom trailer goes up.
- 54:49Goes down, hits the back of the truck.
- 54:51That's happened on more than one occasion.
- 54:53Hasn't hit the truck yet, but it has, it has not hit the truck.
- 54:57Yeah.
- 54:57Guys just aren't doing it quite right then.
- 54:59No, apparently not.
- 55:00Not hitting it hard enough, I guess.
- 55:02I mean, there are so many, there's so many stories.
- 55:05I mean, I, I'm, I'm well into the triple digits with students.
- 55:08I mean, it runs the gamut from the most timid to the engineers to the
- 55:13overly aggressive and you know, like I said, every day is a good day
- 55:16to die as an instructor, but you.
- 55:19You learn quickly from everybody else's learning habits, their
- 55:24mistakes, it makes you a better driver.
- 55:26But on the same token, it's extremely stressful.
- 55:28But the weirdest stuff happens.
- 55:30The weirdest things break.
- 55:31The weirdest things go wrong, but you have to take it in stride.
- 55:34If you get upset about the first time you break a stud and you're
- 55:38out there on four out of five, well, not that that's ever happened.
- 55:42I mean, that's something simple, right?
- 55:43Or how many trips we've gone for broken axles over the years, or you know, busted
- 55:48wheel bearings or whatever have you.
- 55:50You just learn to be prepared.
- 55:52We talked about it on the episode with you guys.
- 55:54It's the checklist.
- 55:55It's being organized, it's being over-prepared.
- 55:58That's what comes with seat time is all those lessons learned.
- 56:02But you know, the one thing I can say is never go to the track alone.
- 56:07Make friends, you will.
- 56:09And the, the track is a general term, by the way.
- 56:12You will meet other people, make friends, because if you go alone,
- 56:17you'll be turned off, right?
- 56:19Because people are hyper concentrated on their checklist and the things they
- 56:22need to do and make sure the car is safe and ready and all that kind of thing.
- 56:25But talk to people, meet people.
- 56:28There's no such thing as a dumb question in my opinion.
- 56:30And that even a stupid question opens conversation.
- 56:34Sure.
- 56:34And especially if there's somebody else there with a similar car to you.
- 56:38That's a golden opportunity if you're looking to get into it.
- 56:42There's two golden rules.
- 56:44And those are a, if I can't walk up and put a boot in your door, you've
- 56:49brought the wrong car to the track.
- 56:51And number two, buy what you see in the paddock.
- 56:54So if you go to events, you know, NASA events or CCA or maybe your Porsche
- 56:58Club or whatever, if you see nine 40 fours and you see E 36 s and Miatas and
- 57:04Volkswagens and Hondas, that's what you should be buying as your track weapon.
- 57:09Not the, you know, the Studebaker.
- 57:11Avanti because you think it's cool and you wanna show everybody how cool
- 57:14it is, you're gonna be left on the side of the paddock by yourself trying
- 57:18to figure out how to get that thing and cont get that thing to continue
- 57:21running versus, Hey, do you have a spare throttle body for a anemia?
- 57:25Sure, I got 12.
- 57:27Just grab one off the truck.
- 57:28Give, leave me five bucks.
- 57:29You know, that kind of thing.
- 57:30Mm-hmm.
- 57:33So now I agree.
- 57:34So now that we're done with the introduction, let's get
- 57:36to the meat of the podcast.
- 57:37Yeah, we, so just in case our, our listenerships did not overlap as much
- 57:43as I, I think they should or think they could because we both have kind
- 57:46of aligned in terms of what we're trying to do for the sport and, and
- 57:50trying to get people into the sport.
- 57:52I thought I would go over a few of your episodes that stood out
- 57:56and we could talk about them here.
- 57:58Okay.
- 57:59And go over 'em.
- 58:00So, Episode, I think it was three, maybe four, way back, way back.
- 58:07You had starter cars that were, you think would be great.
- 58:12And it could be for the road, or it could be for the track.
- 58:14And especially I wanted to get into, um, selection criteria and we, I think we just
- 58:19did a little bit of the typical examples, but just in case for our listeners, what
- 58:23was, what was the, uh, results of this?
- 58:26Episodes, sir?
- 58:27Yeah, so that kicked off our, what Should I Buy?
- 58:31Series, which started in print.
- 58:33It also was on Slack.
- 58:35A lot of arguments over the years.
- 58:36People coming into the sport and saying, you know what?
- 58:39I did run what I brung.
- 58:40I don't wanna drive my 2003 Civic, you know, what do I wanna buy as a track car?
- 58:45You know, I want something that I can abuse.
- 58:48So trivia, if anybody's playing the game at home, that was not our first recorded.
- 58:53What should I buy?
- 58:53Episode of the V8 convertibles was actually the first one, but
- 58:56in order, the starter track cars had to come first to kind of set
- 59:00the credibility and set the stage.
- 59:02How we determined that list was basically based on the two guiding principles.
- 59:08We just said.
- 59:09Cars that are commodity cars, uh, huge aftermarket following, easy to
- 59:14get parts for, and were basically 10,000 bucks or less, right?
- 59:18It's pretty cheap.
- 59:19And everybody's got one.
- 59:20So on that list included cars like E 36 and E 46, BMWs, C c5, Corvette.
- 59:27The B R Z is an outlier cause it's more expensive and it's a lot newer,
- 59:30but it's still relatively cheap.
- 59:31It's, you know, less than 30 grand.
- 59:33If you're gonna buy one brand new these days they've come down in price.
- 59:36Nine 40 fours, three 50 Zs front wheel drive cars like Volkswagen
- 59:40and Civics and things like that.
- 59:42So that was our starter, you know, list.
- 59:44You know, you don't, to Brad's point, you're not Schumacher.
- 59:47You're not Senna.
- 59:49Yeah.
- 59:49You might own a GT 3 9 11 or you know, a Audi Rs.
- 59:54Four or something like that.
- 59:56Those cars with all their nannies and computers are going to
- 59:58disguise a lot of your bad habits.
- 1:00:01Learning how to drive a slower car, a driver's car, a more primitive car
- 1:00:05fast is gonna make you a better driver.
- 1:00:08So that's what, as long as you fit in the car.
- 1:00:10Yeah.
- 1:00:10Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 1:00:12What about, uh, you know, I've seen people with fully prepped race
- 1:00:19cars, arrow and slicks in HBD one, so I'm gonna, I'm gonna pose a.
- 1:00:25Retort to that in the form of a question.
- 1:00:27And I bring this up in my classroom sessions at Emra, and I have a
- 1:00:32couple slides that go with it.
- 1:00:33And I ask these folks, you know, they show up with cars like that
- 1:00:36and I, and I say, do you even know what any of this stuff does?
- 1:00:39And I get this kind of blank stare or confusion, like, what are you
- 1:00:42talk, where are you going with this?
- 1:00:43And then I ask, do you have a wind tunnel at home?
- 1:00:46And then I get this other kind of like side eye like, okay, where's he
- 1:00:49going now I always have it subscribed to the idea that you never mod a
- 1:00:55car past your ability to drive it.
- 1:00:57But then there are also mods that you cannot prove work.
- 1:01:01So you can take a page outta Mighty Car Mods playbook and figure
- 1:01:04out which air filter does and doesn't work for your application.
- 1:01:07And that's a good way to go stop buying parts because you think they look cool,
- 1:01:11especially if they don't work, they could be robbing you of horsepower.
- 1:01:13But when you talk about Arrow and you know, I've seen crazy things,
- 1:01:16you know, splitters made of plywood and all sorts of nutty things,
- 1:01:20especially in the time trial world.
- 1:01:22But if you can't prove to me that any of that stuff works,
- 1:01:24don't bolt it to your car.
- 1:01:26But to.
- 1:01:28Kind of counter that a little bit.
- 1:01:29Some of those people may be showing up with a rented car.
- 1:01:32True, especially in H P D one.
- 1:01:34They may be borrowing a friend's car or they're renting a car that just
- 1:01:38happens to be a spec me out or whatever.
- 1:01:41And to them, I mean, yeah, please come out and, you know, drive
- 1:01:43whatever you have available to you.
- 1:01:45I would suggest that if the car that's a spec Miata, for example, asks the
- 1:01:51person renting the car to you to put street tires on instead of, you know,
- 1:01:56the slicks or the, the competition tires, and ask them maybe to put a less
- 1:02:00grippier brake pad so you can actually drive the car that your capabilities
- 1:02:05instead of the car's capabilities.
- 1:02:08And there's the other side of that.
- 1:02:09I mean, I, we can say, especially in our area, there's countless E 36 s when
- 1:02:13you walk through the paddock that all have the same design, the same canards,
- 1:02:16the same splitter from from heart motorsports, the same, uh, you know,
- 1:02:20spoiler, all this stuff and everybody's copying everybody else, but nobody can
- 1:02:24tell you who said that was a good idea.
- 1:02:26And then you get, and then you get the guy that comes in with the four door,
- 1:02:30M three with no arrow, and he wipes the floor with everybody by two seconds.
- 1:02:34So is it the car in the setup or is it the driver?
- 1:02:37Which is it?
- 1:02:38So that's why I take issue with some of those mods and
- 1:02:40say, a, are you ready for 'em?
- 1:02:42And B, do they actually work?
- 1:02:45Hmm.
- 1:02:47Very cool.
- 1:02:49It's Vicky.
- 1:02:53Um, have, what is your, uh, decisions and your thoughts on, um, track
- 1:02:59insurance pluses and minuses?
- 1:03:03So we have been very fortunate to interview several track insurance
- 1:03:07companies, episodes forthcoming.
- 1:03:09You know, there are huge benefits to it if you have something of value.
- 1:03:14Now, I'm not saying that not all cars have value, but if you have an old mark,
- 1:03:19two G t I x i t B car that you bought off a racing junk, I mean, what's it worth?
- 1:03:24Right?
- 1:03:24You're not gonna get, even if you're running an H P D Yeah,
- 1:03:27declare value's, awesome.
- 1:03:28You can walk away from it, but it's not a car that.
- 1:03:32It personally would pay me if I wrecked it.
- 1:03:34Like I'm always of the opinion, buy a car you could walk away from, uh,
- 1:03:38like we were talking about before.
- 1:03:39But yeah, if you have a GT 3, 9 11 or you're running a Viper or
- 1:03:42a brand new C8 Corvette, yeah, track insurance, absolutely.
- 1:03:45Because you're probably still paying on that car or, or whatever have you.
- 1:03:49Or you know, you saved all your pennies and that's your dream card.
- 1:03:52No, you don't wanna wreck it.
- 1:03:54But there's also the other side of that, if you don't wanna pay the price
- 1:03:58for track insurance, then listen.
- 1:04:01Not a hundred percent, 200% to everything your instructor tells you,
- 1:04:05because you need to make sure that you take it home as shiny as it arrived.
- 1:04:09So there's that side of it.
- 1:04:10So again, to Brad's point, you're not Nigel Mansel or ta Tio Noval or whatever.
- 1:04:16Come, be prepared to learn.
- 1:04:18Humble yourself.
- 1:04:19Take it down a couple notches.
- 1:04:20Yes, you've got the fastest car in beginner group, but you're also the
- 1:04:24biggest fish in the smallest pond, right?
- 1:04:26So you need to work up to it.
- 1:04:27So truck insurance is a good thing.
- 1:04:29I like the fact that it exists.
- 1:04:30I think it needed to be there for a long time.
- 1:04:33The huge benefit for me as an instructor is that it covers me as well.
- 1:04:38Uh, not all companies, but there are companies that will cover
- 1:04:40the coach at the same time.
- 1:04:42So that's important.
- 1:04:44But, but, but Brad, I, I drive 25 or 30,000 miles a year for my job, so
- 1:04:50you know, I'm gonna be naturally good at this cuz I'm an excellent driver.
- 1:04:55No, no, you're not.
- 1:04:59And what you can do, yes, you can go out and you can, we can play a game.
- 1:05:03I will.
- 1:05:04Let you drive the way you wanna drive.
- 1:05:07We'll, we'll time you we're not supposed to do this, cuz it's
- 1:05:09not a timed event, but whatever.
- 1:05:10This is my fantasy.
- 1:05:12So, we'll time you and then we're gonna take you out in my car
- 1:05:15and we're gonna time me and then I'm gonna show you how you suck.
- 1:05:20Wow.
- 1:05:23So, so the student's nickname in this case is Hoover.
- 1:05:26Okay.
- 1:05:27Very well.
- 1:05:28It's the, uh, the, the suck cut.
- 1:05:31Yes.
- 1:05:31Yes.
- 1:05:31Suck.
- 1:05:32Cut.
- 1:05:33It sucks while it cuts.
- 1:05:35I mean, there's something to be said about that.
- 1:05:37There's a lot of people, especially here in the dmv, the speeds have
- 1:05:41picked up a lot lately in the highways.
- 1:05:42I don't know about where you guys are.
- 1:05:44Yeah.
- 1:05:44But everybody seems to be able to do a hundred miles an hour now with
- 1:05:47no issues because, you know, the cars are safer and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:05:50The speed limit be damned, you know, that sort of thing.
- 1:05:52And, and I, I find myself, you know, even let's say five miles over the
- 1:05:55limit, getting past like I'm parked.
- 1:05:58But the difference is, What I bring home from the track is massive
- 1:06:03amounts of situational awareness.
- 1:06:05Thinking ahead, planning ahead, looking ahead, you know,
- 1:06:08constantly checking my mirrors.
- 1:06:09So I, I've said more than once even to my wife, and we've seen things
- 1:06:12unfold where I'm like, watch this rack.
- 1:06:14And she goes, what do you mean?
- 1:06:15And I'm like, just wait for it, right?
- 1:06:17Because people just aren't paying attention.
- 1:06:19So on the road it's easy to squeeze the thin pedal and go fast.
- 1:06:22As long as your car has any modicum of horsepower, the difference comes in.
- 1:06:27Yeah, you might be able to take that long swooping double
- 1:06:30lane ramp at 80 miles an hour.
- 1:06:33But it's really different on Shenandoah and Watkins Glen and v i r.
- 1:06:37When you're putting the car to its limits and trying to take that turn at
- 1:06:4090, a hundred plus or, or whatever have you, there's, there's not the space.
- 1:06:45It's not the same, and it doesn't a hundred percent translate.
- 1:06:48My dad used to tell me that all the time.
- 1:06:50Just because you think you can drive in the street doesn't mean
- 1:06:52you can drive anywhere else.
- 1:06:53And also, who's putting 30,000 miles a year on their car post covid.
- 1:06:58Everybody's working from home.
- 1:07:00You, you went from putting 30,000 miles on your car to putting, you're rusty.
- 1:07:03You're putting 6,000 miles on your car now.
- 1:07:07This is true.
- 1:07:08This is true.
- 1:07:09Oh, the best one to, to, to dovetail off of that is the best ones that, oh,
- 1:07:12well, I, I played this track in Forza.
- 1:07:14I know what I'm doing.
- 1:07:15Oh, geez.
- 1:07:15Don't even get me started.
- 1:07:17I do this in iRacing all the time.
- 1:07:18I'm a pro.
- 1:07:19All right.
- 1:07:19Let me give you the number one thing and we, we've talked to some eSports people.
- 1:07:23If you think you can drive because you drive iRacing and I get how
- 1:07:26popular it is or Aceto, Corsa or Forza or any of those, that's awesome.
- 1:07:30You know, which way turn 10 goes at, at Watkins Glen, or which
- 1:07:35way the oak tree goes at v i r.
- 1:07:37Great.
- 1:07:38You know what's missing from all the simulations, because it can't be
- 1:07:41simulated, is the elevation changes that you experience, especially at the
- 1:07:45coast on, at the tracks on the east coast there is, when you get there you
- 1:07:49realize, oh, the 3D scanning and all that, it's beautiful, it's gorgeous, it's 4k.
- 1:07:53But what they failed to tell you is those cameras were mounted to
- 1:07:57a car and when you go up a hill, everything looks really, really flat.
- 1:08:01Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:01So that's what you're missing is camera elevation and then the real physics.
- 1:08:05That ass in the seat, as Hanuk used to say, his best tool
- 1:08:10was what he was sitting on.
- 1:08:11What he, when he was driving.
- 1:08:12You don't get that in the sim world.
- 1:08:15If you don't believe him.
- 1:08:17Go to Road Atlanta, drive in, you're not even on the track yet.
- 1:08:20Just go through the gate and tell me that's what the sim looks like.
- 1:08:24Cause it doesn't, 10 A through 12, you might as well be driving off a building.
- 1:08:29I mean, it's pretty much huge.
- 1:08:31Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:32For sure.
- 1:08:32Wow.
- 1:08:34So, um, what about diagnosis of car issues?
- 1:08:37I mean, how did you come about learning, working on cars?
- 1:08:43Have you always done it or do you have references?
- 1:08:45Did you learn, tell me your story.
- 1:08:49I've always let Eric work on my cars.
- 1:08:52This is a true, this is a true statement.
- 1:08:53So that's where he got all his experience.
- 1:08:56Something to do with the first name of B starting with a B.
- 1:08:59That's what it's So I am fix that is for sure.
- 1:09:03Uh, like was it a fix it Felix and a wreck?
- 1:09:05It Ralph, that's me.
- 1:09:06But uh, he's wreck it Ralph.
- 1:09:08Right.
- 1:09:09So are you a tinkerer?
- 1:09:11Me?
- 1:09:12Yeah.
- 1:09:12No.
- 1:09:12Well, so the thing is, you know, going back to my, you
- 1:09:16know, my history in cars, I.
- 1:09:19My grandfather grew up in a time where you worked on 'em yourselves, right?
- 1:09:22You had to fix the ambassador's cars and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:24My dad the same thing.
- 1:09:25You know, back then you didn't take it to the mechanic, you did it yourself.
- 1:09:28So I grew up in a family where, you know that immigrant tenacity, you rolled
- 1:09:33up your sleeves, you didn't take it to the mechanic, you learned how to do it.
- 1:09:36So I wrote an article about this years ago.
- 1:09:38We just recently did an episode, a reprisal on Father's Day called
- 1:09:42Come Here and Hold the Light.
- 1:09:44And it was all about spending time in the garage with your dad and learning,
- 1:09:47you know, by osmosis, curse word or otherwise, you know how to work on cars.
- 1:09:51So growing up with.
- 1:09:54As a dinosaur.
- 1:09:55Carbureted cars, manual cars, not only manual transmission, but we're talking My
- 1:10:00nine 14 is manual brakes, manual clutch.
- 1:10:02It's manual everything.
- 1:10:03Manual steering, right?
- 1:10:05So growing up in a, you know, old school Porsche of UW Audi
- 1:10:08family, that's what you lived with.
- 1:10:09So you got really good at diagnosing issues and listening to the car.
- 1:10:14You know, my dad was never one to have anything stock,
- 1:10:17so everything had an exhaust.
- 1:10:18I got really good at identifying, you know, when a miss or when
- 1:10:22it wasn't running right or which car was going by me, he would do
- 1:10:25these, close your eyes, you know, tell me which cars are in traffic.
- 1:10:28All sorts of weird stuff, right?
- 1:10:29Oh, these, all these Jedi mind tricks that I learned over the years.
- 1:10:33So from that spawned, I guess you guys are leading to the seven deadly
- 1:10:37sins or the seven deadly sounds.
- 1:10:39And so that came from Brad and I talking about, you know, as he wanted
- 1:10:44to branch out on his own, how do I diagnose some of these issues?
- 1:10:47How do I tell the difference between a wheel bearing that's going bad and
- 1:10:50the brake pads and things like that?
- 1:10:52And we wanted to take that and.
- 1:10:54Bestow that upon our students as well and to, you know, everything
- 1:10:57happens at a higher speed on track, so you need to be cognizant of what
- 1:11:01this grind means versus that grind.
- 1:11:03And it's not the one between third and fourth gear.
- 1:11:06It's, you know, when you're going into turn one at Watkins Glen at
- 1:11:09a buck 20, and you suddenly break the hub because you knew the wheel
- 1:11:12bearing was going and you ignored it.
- 1:11:13You know, that sort of thing to ask me how I know.
- 1:11:16Yeah.
- 1:11:17But that, that said, you know, it is really important to use all of your
- 1:11:21senses when you're dealing with a car.
- 1:11:25I, I don't recommend taste usually, but, you know, smell, sight,
- 1:11:29you know, knowing your colors.
- 1:11:31We talk about that a lot.
- 1:11:32We actually translated this into what we call a car care clinic,
- 1:11:35which we did for some high schools, and trying to teach those kids as
- 1:11:38they were going away from home.
- 1:11:40You know, you don't have to call mom and dad every five minutes, but learn how
- 1:11:43to tell your mechanic or advanced auto.
- 1:11:46What it is that you're experiencing as your problem.
- 1:11:49So we're, we're all about education.
- 1:11:51We love, like, you know, passing that information along and
- 1:11:54that's part of the enthusiasm.
- 1:11:56Hmm.
- 1:11:57Um, what about your, uh, track day hangover episodes, tips and tricks,
- 1:12:06especially in the heater cold?
- 1:12:10So, it's a real thing.
- 1:12:11I had it on Monday and you know, the hangover is a loaded term.
- 1:12:15It, you know, a lot of people Oh, cause you were drinking beer all weekend.
- 1:12:18No, I, I'm not a, I'm not a heavy drinker, neither is Brad a beer.
- 1:12:23Unfortunately, as we discussed on the episode, is it dehydrates
- 1:12:26you on top of everything else.
- 1:12:27But really the track hangover is a result of being out in the sun all day
- 1:12:30at places like v i r and the Glen where they have no shade of any kind and you
- 1:12:35don't drink, you don't drink enough.
- 1:12:37Yeah, you don't hydrate properly.
- 1:12:38You don't eat properly.
- 1:12:39I mean, yep.
- 1:12:40A lot of people, even when they go away from home, whether it be a
- 1:12:43track day or anything, they just, they don't eat properly because you
- 1:12:46don't have your, your food there.
- 1:12:49You can't prepare your own food, so you're always eating out.
- 1:12:51And what do you do when you eat out?
- 1:12:52You get a steak or you get a burger, or you get a pizza or something.
- 1:12:56And so people just, all of that compounds into Yeah, just
- 1:13:01feeling like complete trash.
- 1:13:02Like the first thing I wanna do when I come home from a track event, uh,
- 1:13:06either a track event I'm driving at, or a pro race or whatever.
- 1:13:09The first you can ask my wife.
- 1:13:11I've done this on numerous occasions.
- 1:13:12The first thing I do is I come home and I eat a salad.
- 1:13:14I eat the biggest salad I can just to get some sort of green nutrients,
- 1:13:18because yes, Bill's making weird faces.
- 1:13:21Bill's like no porterhouse steak with a one on it.
- 1:13:24Come on now.
- 1:13:24Well, because I had fried chicken and porterhouse and all that stuff while I was
- 1:13:28out, so I need to come back and just load up on, you know, some, some leafy greens.
- 1:13:34So, to Brad's point, Yes, a hundred percent.
- 1:13:37I agree with that.
- 1:13:37I did the same thing when I got home from the Glen this weekend after the SRO event.
- 1:13:41I was just like wasted and you know, not burnt from the sun,
- 1:13:44but I didn't hydrate enough.
- 1:13:46I do subscribe to everything that Ken said on the episode.
- 1:13:49Pre hydration is key, so I pre hydrate lots of vegetable-based proteins, you
- 1:13:54know, dense vegetable-based proteins.
- 1:13:56I really do follow along with what he said.
- 1:13:59Part of the reason we had him on the show, not only is he a personal
- 1:14:01friend, colleague, et cetera, he used to race motorcycles.
- 1:14:04Motorcycles are intense.
- 1:14:05Take what we do, and now put yourself in full leathers on a hot bike.
- 1:14:11As close to the asphalt, which is, you know, 200 degrees as possible.
- 1:14:14Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:15So Ken comes from that world and he's like, look, we had to develop
- 1:14:18a regimen to keep ourselves from having that track going over.
- 1:14:22And so when I reached out to him, because he changed careers, he had
- 1:14:25his midlife crisis, and, uh, he went in to be a nutritionist full-time.
- 1:14:29I said, Ken, this is a golden opportunity for us to really have this
- 1:14:32conversation and help educate some people on what they're doing wrong
- 1:14:36and how they can go to work on Monday.
- 1:14:38You know, like the old Ford race on the weekend, go to work on Monday.
- 1:14:42You want your body to be the same way.
- 1:14:44And so that episode is really, really important for that reason.
- 1:14:47Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:48And, and on top of all of that, it is just running on adrenaline
- 1:14:52depending on what, especially depending on what level that you're at.
- 1:14:57Yep.
- 1:14:57You gotta figure your body is a hundred percent on the entire time.
- 1:15:03And that just absolute dream.
- 1:15:04I, I, I feel it.
- 1:15:07Yeah.
- 1:15:07And I don't know, I don't know about you all, but whenever I go away to a
- 1:15:11track event, I never sleep properly.
- 1:15:13Just, I don't either.
- 1:15:15I, I get maybe, I mean, I'll, I'll try to go to bed at nine o'clock at night.
- 1:15:20I won't, I will lay there in the bed and not fall asleep until midnight.
- 1:15:24And then you gotta wake up at 5:36 AM to to prepare for the, for the event, whether
- 1:15:30you gotta go to the instructor's meeting or whatever, or you gotta get your car
- 1:15:33off the trail, or you have to fix broken axles before your first session mm-hmm.
- 1:15:36Or whatever.
- 1:15:37Yeah.
- 1:15:37But I don't, I don't know anybody that actually sleeps properly.
- 1:15:40So not, not only are you malnourished, you're sleep deprived and all of that
- 1:15:44is just, it's a recipe for disaster.
- 1:15:47Yeah.
- 1:15:47Um, I know, I know in our instance is that I don't even
- 1:15:50sleep well going into the race.
- 1:15:52Correct.
- 1:15:53You know, like the couple days before, whether it's, you know, thinking of stuff
- 1:15:56that has to go, um, you're all hyped up, you're trying to make sure everything,
- 1:16:00all your, you know, I are dotted and t's are crossed before you get there.
- 1:16:05So I don't even sleep well going into it.
- 1:16:08And then sleep deprived elsewhere.
- 1:16:11So, so one of the top tips I give the trialers at Emera is
- 1:16:15what I call the nine lap rule.
- 1:16:17So if you can't, if you can't do it in nine laps, you're hurting
- 1:16:21yourself and you're hurting the car.
- 1:16:22Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:23Three warm, three hot, three cold, get the heck off the track.
- 1:16:26Cuz otherwise you're wasting your time.
- 1:16:28Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:29Unless it's an endurance race.
- 1:16:30True.
- 1:16:31But, you know, yeah.
- 1:16:33Jay, you're happy to make nine laps at that point.
- 1:16:36Right?
- 1:16:37So, so I heard this foreign concept, I, I believe Brad said it.
- 1:16:40He, he said that people wake up early to prepare the car for the event.
- 1:16:48I've never experienced that.
- 1:16:49I've, I've, I've heard about these things, but, oh wait, sorry.
- 1:16:53Uh, that was out loud anyway.
- 1:16:55Um, are you saying you're fully prepared before you get there
- 1:17:00or you just No, I'm saying he's, his mechanic works on the car.
- 1:17:03I'm saying I'm the only one who gets up in the morning.
- 1:17:06But anyway, it's, we've got a lot of coffee people, so we have an award, by
- 1:17:10the way, called the, uh, what is it?
- 1:17:13The old leg award.
- 1:17:14You fixed it in the paddock.
- 1:17:15That's for the guys that didn't prep, did all their stuff that
- 1:17:18day, stuff broke and then they still managed to get out on track.
- 1:17:21And the last time that happened, somebody pulled the transmission, did a clutch
- 1:17:24job and still managed to get out on track cuz you know, they needed to get it done.
- 1:17:28Yeah.
- 1:17:28But my favorite are the people, cuz we've got a couple of 'em in our club.
- 1:17:32They sign up for a track event.
- 1:17:34They pay for a track event, they show up to a track event, and then
- 1:17:37they spend the entire track event prepping the car for the event to the
- 1:17:42point where it's Sunday afternoon, there's one session left in the day.
- 1:17:47And they get to drive half of it.
- 1:17:50We'll talk about Mat Man, mountain Man band, like that.
- 1:17:52Oh, there are, there are a couple others that I could talk about.
- 1:17:56Basically, they do their winter prep at the first traffic.
- 1:17:59Oh Lord.
- 1:18:00The most expensive garage time ever.
- 1:18:03Yep.
- 1:18:03Well, I can't, I mean, I gotta say that early, early, early on when
- 1:18:07we didn't know anything about cars or car maintenance or anything.
- 1:18:13Correct.
- 1:18:13We were those people.
- 1:18:15No.
- 1:18:15You know, we, we tried to do it, we just didn't know what it meant.
- 1:18:19Yeah.
- 1:18:19We, we learned the hard way.
- 1:18:23So, so you ready for the delusions of a, a newbie?
- 1:18:26So we go to our first endurance race.
- 1:18:28We bring our car, we've prepared our car.
- 1:18:31We go out there, the car goes round and round.
- 1:18:33We put the car away at the end, we drive home.
- 1:18:35This is easy.
- 1:18:36So what do we do?
- 1:18:38Second race.
- 1:18:40Hey, let's get four more people and we can have two cars.
- 1:18:44Cuz this is easy.
- 1:18:45You just prepare the car, bring it to the track, goes round
- 1:18:50and round and put it away.
- 1:18:51How hard can this be?
- 1:18:53No, no.
- 1:18:54I gotta add on to that too.
- 1:18:55Half of our group are teenagers.
- 1:18:57Yes.
- 1:18:58Cause it's easy.
- 1:18:59Well there, there's your problem right there.
- 1:19:01Yes.
- 1:19:02And the other half pretended to be teenagers, at least in behavior.
- 1:19:05Yeah.
- 1:19:05So it was great.
- 1:19:06It was awesome.
- 1:19:07There's the reset button.
- 1:19:08Yeah.
- 1:19:08Yeah.
- 1:19:09Two.
- 1:19:09Two cars is eight x one car.
- 1:19:12Anyway.
- 1:19:13All right gentlemen.
- 1:19:15You've been doing this podcast for a couple of years now.
- 1:19:17I need to know the biggest aha moments you got from your podcast so far.
- 1:19:23Could be hopefully in car control.
- 1:19:26Could be something mechanical, could be something racing, could be something in
- 1:19:29approach or prep or anything you got.
- 1:19:32Any aha moments that you guys are like, oh wow.
- 1:19:37Ooh.
- 1:19:41Uh, think about this.
- 1:19:43I stomped them, Becky.
- 1:19:44I know, I hear Well, it's, it's because our guests are so different.
- 1:19:49They are.
- 1:19:49And how, what are you saying?
- 1:19:52Well, because diverse, I think he says, okay.
- 1:19:55Well, in the sense that, like, for instance, I know you guys have
- 1:19:58interviewed like Randy, right?
- 1:20:00Yep.
- 1:20:00Yep.
- 1:20:01Or Randy Popes for those who are listening.
- 1:20:02So if I, if I had Randy Popes on, I'd be diving into his past and talking about
- 1:20:08how he grew up and tell me about bracing FS overseas and, you know, who else do
- 1:20:13you know, you know, did, did you have a grudge match against Andy Pilgrim?
- 1:20:16Which he didn't.
- 1:20:16They're like good friends, you know, stuff like that.
- 1:20:19And, but I would never, I guess never would I ever, but.
- 1:20:23I wouldn't ask him about driving technique.
- 1:20:25Right.
- 1:20:25That's your guys' thing.
- 1:20:26I'd be more like, I, I just wanna know his story.
- 1:20:29I wanna know story time.
- 1:20:30Yeah.
- 1:20:30Yeah.
- 1:20:31I want people to be motivated and inspired to say, I can do what Randy does.
- 1:20:35I wanna be like, Randy, you know, there's plenty of other talk tracks out there,
- 1:20:40especially, you know, all of us look to Ross Bentley as kind of the pinnacle on
- 1:20:44this thing in terms of driving techniques with speed secrets and all that.
- 1:20:47So, Have we had aha moments?
- 1:20:49Absolutely.
- 1:20:50But they've come in the weirdest ways because of people's backstories,
- 1:20:54how they got to where they are.
- 1:20:56You look at Rob Holland's story about how, how he started as a pro cyclist mm-hmm.
- 1:21:00And how he's a professional driver for many, many years.
- 1:21:03He's got, you know, he, uh, he's got records all over the place.
- 1:21:07You look at Andy's backstory, he comes from humble beginnings As an
- 1:21:09immigrant from, from the uk you look at, um, even people that are related
- 1:21:15to the car world, but not in the car world like Barbie, the welder.
- 1:21:18I mean, she's got an amazing backstory.
- 1:21:20Absolutely inspirational.
- 1:21:22And, and Chuck Bennett from Zamal, right?
- 1:21:24They got all these.
- 1:21:26How did they get their moments right?
- 1:21:28And it's, those are the things that we really cherish, and there's been
- 1:21:31a lot of those just really amazing stories that we've been able to
- 1:21:36capture and share with our audience.
- 1:21:38I think my aha moment, you know, I, I, I, you know, second everything that Eric
- 1:21:42just said, but if I had to choose just an aha moment, it would be Andy's story
- 1:21:49specifically and how he started so late.
- 1:21:53Yes.
- 1:21:53And he got, he got his start in racing and everything so late in life, and that
- 1:21:57contradicts everything you hear about, oh, if you wanna be the next Lewis
- 1:22:01Hamilton, you've gotta, you've gotta start carting when you're two or three years
- 1:22:06old and you gotta start super young and you gotta, that didn't happen for him.
- 1:22:11He didn't start till what?
- 1:22:12He was in his forties.
- 1:22:13Yeah.
- 1:22:13He didn't get his professional seat and his gig with GM until he was 40 and
- 1:22:18that just expired a couple years ago.
- 1:22:19He's been a factory driver for GM and Cadillac and all that
- 1:22:23for the last, you know, 20.
- 1:22:25He's 64 years old now, so almost 25 years.
- 1:22:27So the a the aha moment is basically, you can do it too,
- 1:22:31follow you, you, you can do it too.
- 1:22:32Follow your dreams.
- 1:22:33It doesn't matter how old you are, you can start whenever you want.
- 1:22:36You could be 70 years old, you'll get a platinum license
- 1:22:40or whatever, but you won't.
- 1:22:41Bronze, bronze, bronze.
- 1:22:43Now, oh, sorry, you, you'll get a bronze license.
- 1:22:45You won't get a pro license.
- 1:22:46But I mean, follow your dreams.
- 1:22:48Who cares?
- 1:22:49Don't listen to these people that tell you you won't succeed because they
- 1:22:51don't know what they're talking about.
- 1:22:53I mean, there's other people that have gobsmacked us,
- 1:22:55like Johann Schwartz, right?
- 1:22:57He's the Guinness Book.
- 1:22:57That was amazing.
- 1:22:58Yes.
- 1:22:58He's the Guinness Book world record holder for the longest drift.
- 1:23:02Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:02It, it's eight hours in A B M W, over 200 miles.
- 1:23:05He also holds the current ev record at v i r in the, uh, Tesla.
- 1:23:10Tesla plaid.
- 1:23:11Plaid.
- 1:23:11And so we got a chance to sit down with him, and he's an amazing guy.
- 1:23:15Again, another immigrant came over from Denmark, and you know, his backstory
- 1:23:20on how he got into motorsports and professional racing and all that
- 1:23:23is just, it's inspiring and we hope that other people get excited about
- 1:23:27that and say, yeah, you know, like I said before, you can do it too.
- 1:23:30There's always an opportunity Captain's Log supplemental.
- 1:23:41So Miss Vicky?
- 1:23:43Yes, sir.
- 1:23:44Do you remember when we were watching those WR r l events and some of those
- 1:23:47Grid life events where you used to see the in-car video and it had like the,
- 1:23:52the cameras seeing front and back, but it also could see all the telemetry
- 1:23:56and everything that was going on?
- 1:23:58Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:59You know, most of the ones that we liked were taken by the Sentinel system.
- 1:24:04Remember James came on our podcast earlier, right?
- 1:24:08You know, we have no excuse.
- 1:24:09Since he, uh, lent us one for trial and demonstration purposes, we
- 1:24:12should actually probably put that in one of our cars, maybe two.
- 1:24:15I really think we should.
- 1:24:17I think we should, I know because then we'd look like the, uh, immature
- 1:24:23endurance racing team that we are.
- 1:24:25Oh wait, I mispronounced that, didn't I?
- 1:24:26Sorry.
- 1:24:26My bad.
- 1:24:29We could have, so does Sentinel System do, we could have three
- 1:24:32cameras with picture and picture.
- 1:24:34We could have, if we ever get the AIM system to work open invitation to
- 1:24:38anybody, for me to come on and give us a little bit of love, we need some help.
- 1:24:42Um, and then we could have all our telemetry on there and then we can have
- 1:24:46it streamed live into the paddock or around the world to our millions of fans.
- 1:24:51We're apparently very popular in Kenya right now.
- 1:24:53Don't know why, but that's fine.
- 1:24:56And it can integrate all the, uh, available race statistics from like
- 1:24:59race here and everything, so we could actually see how we're doing on video.
- 1:25:02We wouldn't even have to carry around our phone anymore live.
- 1:25:07I love it.
- 1:25:11All right, gentlemen, you've made it through the bulk of the podcast.
- 1:25:13Now we must object you to oh, the fast and furious story time questions we're
- 1:25:18gonna do, please, a section of them because we plan on having you back again.
- 1:25:23Oh.
- 1:25:24So Miss Vicky, would you care to choose a couple that we can, uh,
- 1:25:27subject, I mean, uh, ask them.
- 1:25:30All right.
- 1:25:31Uh, what was your first car and what was the worst car you've ever had?
- 1:25:38Ooh, Brad.
- 1:25:41My first car was a 1990 Honda Civic hatchback with four on the floor.
- 1:25:48My first car was an 87 and a half Audi Coop gt.
- 1:25:52Ooh, worst car.
- 1:25:58Ooh, that's a tough one.
- 1:26:02Let's pull up the list.
- 1:26:03Let's pull up the article Of all the cars we found about the
- 1:26:05list is really, really long.
- 1:26:07The list is 30 deep right now for me.
- 1:26:09I don't know.
- 1:26:09Yeah, I'm trying to think.
- 1:26:11Worst car I've ever owned.
- 1:26:14Uh,
- 1:26:19I've sort of loved all my cars.
- 1:26:21They've all had names.
- 1:26:23Good, bad or indifferent?
- 1:26:24I've had some that are, have been problem children, but I don't
- 1:26:28know that I've had a worst car.
- 1:26:30Okay.
- 1:26:30Which one had the worst name?
- 1:26:33Ooh.
- 1:26:33Oh, ooh.
- 1:26:35There was one I wouldn't name.
- 1:26:37That's the worst.
- 1:26:38That's the worst car.
- 1:26:39Yeah, I guess so.
- 1:26:40So that car is driven daily by Mountain Manan.
- 1:26:44Uh, it was my idiot idiotic idea to build a diesel cup car out of a Jetta,
- 1:26:51and I was making ungodly torque.
- 1:26:53I blew it up, rebuilt it.
- 1:26:55Dan blew it up.
- 1:26:56We rebuilt it again.
- 1:26:57It's been through several blowups.
- 1:26:59It, it, it was like, it was, it was like Voldemort.
- 1:27:02I mean, I just could not name that car, but it still runs today, three engines
- 1:27:06later and, and everything else that's been through hell and high water.
- 1:27:10Yeah, maybe that was the worst car.
- 1:27:12I mean, tied for that would be the Mark two GTI that I bought
- 1:27:14because the water pump fell out of it as I was going down the road.
- 1:27:17That was kind of fun.
- 1:27:19Uh, you added, you added lightness.
- 1:27:22I did.
- 1:27:23I did.
- 1:27:23And the other car that would probably be a tie to the mark two G t i I inherited my
- 1:27:29dad's, uh, second gen Audi Cuatro coupe.
- 1:27:31We called it the Mule.
- 1:27:33320,000 miles on the thing.
- 1:27:37He was the second owner.
- 1:27:38It still had the original clutch gray cart.
- 1:27:40It was a tank.
- 1:27:41I mean, it was my snowmobile for years, but, It flooded constantly.
- 1:27:47Like it was major pain in the ass because it was frameless doors, which
- 1:27:52is a cool thing in the nineties.
- 1:27:54And it had a, it had the sunroof that constantly leaked, like all Volkswagens
- 1:27:57and Audis at that time period.
- 1:27:59So it was a nightmare to keep it dry.
- 1:28:01But I loved it, but I hated it.
- 1:28:03But I loved it, but I hated it.
- 1:28:04And I finally regretted sold it and uh, a guy drove it from my house all the way to
- 1:28:11Florida and I said, just do me one favor.
- 1:28:13Let me know that you got there.
- 1:28:14And he's like, still running strong.
- 1:28:16No problem.
- 1:28:17I was like, okay, well good cars have been Florida.
- 1:28:20My worst car was an Audis eight for the same reason.
- 1:28:24It Beautiful car.
- 1:28:26It was amazing interior.
- 1:28:28It was like the most luxurious car I'd ever owned.
- 1:28:30But it would leak any major storm or anything.
- 1:28:33It would leak and I'd get in it and I'd speak.
- 1:28:36My feet would be sitting in two inches of water.
- 1:28:38And I got, so this happened like four or five times.
- 1:28:41I got so fed up with it.
- 1:28:42I took it to CarMax the next day and was like, just take this.
- 1:28:45I don't care what you're gonna gimme for, just get rid of this car.
- 1:28:47I don't want it anymore.
- 1:28:48Wow.
- 1:28:50Did you ever figure out where the leak was coming in at?
- 1:28:52There's, there was this, I, I was, well, so I, I did take it to a place to get
- 1:28:56it cleaned out four of those five times.
- 1:28:59And basically there's a spot where the water drains around the doorsill
- 1:29:03and everywhere, and all the water collects in like this one spot.
- 1:29:07Like under the hood somewhere.
- 1:29:08And basically it's prone to getting leaves and debris and everything like that.
- 1:29:12Plugs it up so the water has nowhere else to go but into the cabin.
- 1:29:16And basically you have to clean out that area, that one small area where, or
- 1:29:22you have to do it like every, basically all the time where it's just going
- 1:29:26to leak into the cabin all the time.
- 1:29:28You, you reminded me, Brad, there is a worse car.
- 1:29:30There is.
- 1:29:31And I put it out of my mind because it was so bad.
- 1:29:34Oh, the M three six.
- 1:29:36M three.
- 1:29:36No, I hated my M three.
- 1:29:38That was like owning a boat, but.
- 1:29:40That Passat station wagon.
- 1:29:42Oh, oh, yes.
- 1:29:43That was the bane of your existence.
- 1:29:44Oh, I could not, oh, that car was terrible.
- 1:29:46I could not get rid of that thing to save my life.
- 1:29:48Ugh.
- 1:29:49All right, palate cleanser time.
- 1:29:51This is gonna make the two of you feel better after the last question and make
- 1:29:54Vicky make the face that she always does.
- 1:29:56So, we're going to win the lottery.
- 1:29:59We're going to buy an island.
- 1:30:01We're going on the island.
- 1:30:02We're gonna build a racetrack, okay?
- 1:30:03We're gonna have an asphalt track and we're gonna have a dirt track.
- 1:30:07But as a thank you to all our guests, we want to have the proper cars for
- 1:30:11you guys to use upon your arrival.
- 1:30:13So what five cars do we need to have to make you happy and make it worthwhile to
- 1:30:20have come on our little silly podcast.
- 1:30:23Brad, would you like to go first?
- 1:30:25This is like our three car garage, desert Island question.
- 1:30:27So is this a billion dollar Powerball win or is this like,
- 1:30:32yes, we million or whatever?
- 1:30:33We, we, since we don't play them, it's, it's whatever size
- 1:30:37we want it to be, so, okay.
- 1:30:39Yes.
- 1:30:40Price is new.
- 1:30:41Price is not, uh, well, for the dirt track, I mean, I want any of
- 1:30:45the, uh, the group B rally cars.
- 1:30:47I mean, I, I'll take the, I'll take the, the Ford Escort Rs, what was it?
- 1:30:52The Rs you don't fit in it.
- 1:30:54I mean, it, it's special with Billy for him.
- 1:30:57If they want take care of you, we take care of you, man.
- 1:30:59Yeah.
- 1:31:00They, they either stretch the chassis or they buy me lipo and so you end up
- 1:31:03with a Mustang that's, um, or, or I would do the, uh, the Rallycross beetle.
- 1:31:11Ooh, the grc.
- 1:31:12Yeah.
- 1:31:12The, the GRC rallycross beetle is really awesome.
- 1:31:15So we're gonna count that as one car.
- 1:31:16Okay, that's fine.
- 1:31:17Uh, for the road course, I mean the Ferrari two 50 G T O.
- 1:31:21Very nice.
- 1:31:22Uh, Shelby Daytona Coop.
- 1:31:24Mm-hmm.
- 1:31:24Same car basically.
- 1:31:26Um, the C7 r that's like my, my dream of all dreams.
- 1:31:31C7 r Corvette.
- 1:31:33And,
- 1:31:37I don't know, I think that's enough.
- 1:31:39I would, I would have plenty of fun with those vehicles.
- 1:31:42Oh man.
- 1:31:43I think, uh, crew Chief Eric May want six cars if you're gonna give one up.
- 1:31:46So, you know, just, just in case.
- 1:31:48Uh, no, no, no.
- 1:31:48I got all these, I got all these Swiss Army knives, you know, so if we're going
- 1:31:51offroad, I'm gonna make my sister happy.
- 1:31:54We're gonna have a Fiat Panda, four by four Sicily, because
- 1:31:57it can pretty much go anywhere.
- 1:31:58And that is the mountain goat of Italy.
- 1:32:00Mm-hmm.
- 1:32:00It doesn't need, you didn't say it needed to have any horsepower.
- 1:32:02And I could get one of those for like a buck 25.
- 1:32:05So it's all good.
- 1:32:06And you know, we can have fun with that.
- 1:32:07That's a very slow lap unless you take the Viking line.
- 1:32:10It's a very fun lap.
- 1:32:11Have you seen the race against that Ferrari in the snow?
- 1:32:14Dude, the Panda just wipes it.
- 1:32:15It's amazing.
- 1:32:16Car.
- 1:32:16Amazing.
- 1:32:17I wonder why it weighs like three ounces.
- 1:32:21So that's number one.
- 1:32:22Number two, another Swiss army knife would be to Brad's
- 1:32:26Point, probably a groupie Audi.
- 1:32:28I love the long wheel base cars.
- 1:32:30I owned a long wheel base, UR Quatro.
- 1:32:33I would probably have to have a Evo S two, like the Pikes Peak car that
- 1:32:36Bobby Uner drove, because that can be driven on asphalt and on off-road.
- 1:32:42On the asphalt side.
- 1:32:44I mean, it's gotta be an Ferrari F 40, I mean, if all the money
- 1:32:46in the world, I mean, fine.
- 1:32:47Let's, let's do it.
- 1:32:49Oh, then I'm my, my fifth car's an F 50.
- 1:32:52Oh, okay.
- 1:32:53I knew that was, he was gonna say that.
- 1:32:54Yeah.
- 1:32:55Um, you know, I really like some funky cars, so I'd, I'd have to have some
- 1:33:03sort of weird revolving door between like the Bugatti B one 10 or the, the
- 1:33:08Ford GT 90 or something of that, you know, nineties era funky concept car.
- 1:33:13I want a concept car of some sort.
- 1:33:15So that would be used on the asphalt, maybe like a, um, banshee.
- 1:33:21The Pontiac Chy, I was thinking about the one that Jerry Weigert uh,
- 1:33:24designed the W eight car, the Vector.
- 1:33:26Right.
- 1:33:26So that'd kinda Oh, okay.
- 1:33:27Yeah, that'd be kind of neat.
- 1:33:28Something just weird that people go, what the hell is that?
- 1:33:31Right.
- 1:33:32But there is one car that could do it all, and I mentioned
- 1:33:35this on one of our episodes.
- 1:33:36It was the Regrets and Desert Island episode, and it's a Hollywood car.
- 1:33:41And spoiler alert, spoiler alert.
- 1:33:44Is Charlie Sheen in the movie?
- 1:33:46No, he is not in the movie.
- 1:33:47Okay.
- 1:33:47Very well.
- 1:33:49We posted recently about it as an article, not an episode.
- 1:33:53And we are working on an episode because we've got friends in both places.
- 1:33:57I would like, we're trying to track down the, what they call
- 1:34:00the beauty car, uh, that Chrysler built for the TV show, Viper.
- 1:34:04Okay.
- 1:34:04And so my fifth car would be the defender because it's an amphibious
- 1:34:09vehicle, an off-road vehicle, a high performance vehicle, all rolled into one.
- 1:34:13So you wanna leave the island is what you're trying to say?
- 1:34:16No, no, no.
- 1:34:16I'm barricading myself on the island.
- 1:34:19Oh wait, can I, can I get rid of my group B rally car and add?
- 1:34:22Sure.
- 1:34:23You can borrow Eric's.
- 1:34:24I, no, I want to add a reliant robin.
- 1:34:26Oh, very nice.
- 1:34:27That's a good one.
- 1:34:27That's a good one.
- 1:34:28Very nice.
- 1:34:28Just for fun.
- 1:34:29Just for fun.
- 1:34:30See Vicky.
- 1:34:31It wasn't so bad.
- 1:34:31We made it.
- 1:34:32We did it.
- 1:34:34We did.
- 1:34:35Um, I do have a question.
- 1:34:37Um, what is the one car that got away?
- 1:34:41Ooh.
- 1:34:42Well that is, wish you had back.
- 1:34:44That's easy cuz it got stolen or did stole.
- 1:34:49Yeah, the car that got stolen, I had one of the first, uh, vw or
- 1:34:54sorry, one of the first Mark four VWR 30 twos in the United States.
- 1:34:59It was actually the show card that was used at Baltimore
- 1:35:02and some of the other places.
- 1:35:03And then, uh, picked up delivery of the car, had it for three years stolen
- 1:35:07right out from underneath of me.
- 1:35:09I would honestly still have that car to this day had it not been stolen.
- 1:35:14That was 20 years ago.
- 1:35:18I've got two cars.
- 1:35:19I had a, uh, a TJ Wrangler that was lifted with big wheels and tires and all that.
- 1:35:26It was probably one of my, the most fun I've had in on four wheels ever.
- 1:35:31And then I had a, a 90 99 Camaro Z 28.
- 1:35:35That was totaled.
- 1:35:37Uh, if I, if that car wasn't totaled, I'd probably still have it.
- 1:35:40Mm.
- 1:35:40Hence his Instagram handle is a result of that accident.
- 1:35:45Mm-hmm.
- 1:35:46Hmm.
- 1:35:47Okay.
- 1:35:49All righty.
- 1:35:49So, um, Jennifer, who could not make it, she's on a family vacation,
- 1:35:54but her favorite question, what is your favorite car, movie, or
- 1:35:59car from a movie of all time?
- 1:36:01Ooh.
- 1:36:07Do you want me to answer or are you gonna Sure.
- 1:36:09Either way.
- 1:36:10Go ahead.
- 1:36:10I'm, I'm thinking Brad looks puzzled.
- 1:36:12I have always had an affinity and I have said before that I would
- 1:36:16own the new generation of this.
- 1:36:18I really.
- 1:36:20Uh, one of the movies that my dad made me watch early on was Vanishing Point.
- 1:36:24Mm-hmm.
- 1:36:25And so I've always had a thing for 71 Challenger, 70 Challenger rt, you
- 1:36:30know, with the rally wheels, the whole nine yards, just like in that movie.
- 1:36:33And I've always said I want an s r t eight new new version with a vanity
- 1:36:38plate that says Kowalski on the back.
- 1:36:40And just run around with that and just rip and roar and just
- 1:36:43hoon around in that thing.
- 1:36:44So that would be kind of my ultimate movie car.
- 1:36:47It's, it's slightly understated.
- 1:36:48It's a cult classic.
- 1:36:50Mm-hmm.
- 1:36:50As far as movie movies go, but I think it's an all around pretty
- 1:36:53cool homage to the muscle car era.
- 1:36:56Sure.
- 1:36:58What about you, Brad?
- 1:36:58Do you have one?
- 1:37:00I do have a movie car.
- 1:37:01Um, Eric kind of alluded to its cousin, uh, or its its younger
- 1:37:06brother earlier, the R 34 Skyline from Too Fast, too Furious.
- 1:37:12As far as my favorite car movie though, I would have to say, I
- 1:37:15don't know that it's necessarily a car movie, but it's got great.
- 1:37:18Car adjacent scenes?
- 1:37:21Um, it would be Ronan.
- 1:37:23Oh, okay.
- 1:37:24All right, Ms.
- 1:37:26Vicky, you have one more or two more?
- 1:37:29Uh, lemme see.
- 1:37:31Um, from our list here, I, what is the weirdest car you think that
- 1:37:39is so far has ever been out there?
- 1:37:42Oh man, that list is long.
- 1:37:46Yeah, but there's, there's a list of terrible cars, but there
- 1:37:48is the ultimate terrible car.
- 1:37:51I mean, there is, so we did a double episode for anybody that's listening,
- 1:37:54it's called, uh, what Should I Buy?
- 1:37:56Ugly Cars.
- 1:37:57And then it was followed up by like Part B, which is the BSides, the uncool cars.
- 1:38:02And so the list goes on and on and on.
- 1:38:05And I mean, you could start at the top of the totem pole with
- 1:38:07cars like the Fiat multiple or the Pontiac Aztec or the PT Cruiser.
- 1:38:12The hhr.
- 1:38:13I mean, those are like the top, you know, four.
- 1:38:16We actually have a thing on our website called the Uncool Wall.
- 1:38:18You can actually go there and vote.
- 1:38:20There's like 50 cars to choose from that we've listed.
- 1:38:23And I mean, it ranges all sorts of things from those that I mentioned to
- 1:38:26things like the p the Porsche 9 28, or the Alpha Romeo sz, which, uh, or
- 1:38:32you've got, you know, just all sorts of weird things on that list that people
- 1:38:35are like, oh, that car's heinous.
- 1:38:37It's terrible.
- 1:38:37It's this, it's.
- 1:38:40Unfortunately, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder if for
- 1:38:42looking at it specifically from an aesthetics point of view.
- 1:38:45But then there are tons of cars that are mechanically deficient, right?
- 1:38:50That are just terrible.
- 1:38:51I mean, I could name a, a list of Jags that everybody's gonna hate me
- 1:38:54for, or Maserati by turbos, you know, cars that are just nightmare cars.
- 1:38:59But people still wanna own those.
- 1:39:01We don't dissuade them from doing that.
- 1:39:03That's a part of our whole, what should I buy?
- 1:39:05Thing is, throw it out there.
- 1:39:06Let's get excited.
- 1:39:07Tell me why you wanna buy a Chrysler Maserati tc, right?
- 1:39:12I don't get it.
- 1:39:13I wanna drive one.
- 1:39:14I don't wanna own one, but hey, if it, there's a club for everybody out there.
- 1:39:19If you owned a garage, you'd want everybody to drive one.
- 1:39:22Ah, this is very true.
- 1:39:24I mean, I wanna collect cars like matchbox cars, so it's all good.
- 1:39:26But you know.
- 1:39:27Hey, Brad, what about you?
- 1:39:33I don't know.
- 1:39:33I don't know enough about.
- 1:39:36Like weird cars or whatever, or classic cars or the, the whatever.
- 1:39:40But I guess a car, I always wondered like why, maybe it's not the car itself,
- 1:39:47but it's how it, how it came out.
- 1:39:50Uh, the.
- 1:39:52All these retro cars, these renamed cars, for example, the Mitsubishi
- 1:39:55Eclipse, that's not a Mitsubishi eclipse anymore, it's an suv.
- 1:39:58Mm-hmm.
- 1:39:59Um, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, when they brought that back in
- 1:40:03the early two thousands, why was it front wheel drive with a.
- 1:40:06Crappy v6.
- 1:40:07Why did they do that to that car?
- 1:40:09Especially when the, the Monte car was, were all, and they're,
- 1:40:11they're G bodies, right?
- 1:40:12They were all, you know, special rear wheel drive, big V8 s I mean, they
- 1:40:17were, they were cool cars in their own.
- 1:40:18That's a mass car.
- 1:40:19Come on now.
- 1:40:20Yeah, there you go.
- 1:40:21There you go.
- 1:40:21Stock, stock car racing, not nascar.
- 1:40:23Stock car racing.
- 1:40:25Um, late, yes.
- 1:40:27Not, not necessarily like the cars themselves, but just like the
- 1:40:29configuration they came out in.
- 1:40:31I was like, why, why are you doing this?
- 1:40:33Why is the must, why is the Mach called the Mustang Mach?
- 1:40:36Why isn't it just the m get started?
- 1:40:39Yeah.
- 1:40:40It's, it's stupid.
- 1:40:41It, there's all a bunch of, we, it badge, badge engineering, right?
- 1:40:45Yeah.
- 1:40:45And there's a lot of that going on right now.
- 1:40:47They're bringing back, uh, the hornet.
- 1:40:50There's, we talk about this on our drive-through all the time and,
- 1:40:52and you know, we kind of, I hate to say piss and moan about it, but.
- 1:40:55It's true though.
- 1:40:56I mean, if you grew up in the era of those cars and suddenly they say, oh,
- 1:41:00we're gonna bring back the coronet, or we're gonna bring back the superbird, and
- 1:41:03it's like the, the Jeep Renegade, Reba, I would be upset as a car enthusiast
- 1:41:08that gets under my skin, you know?
- 1:41:10So I'm with Brad on that one.
- 1:41:12But there is one car, and Vicky asked the question a certain way, but
- 1:41:15there is one car that I despise above all cars on the face of the earth.
- 1:41:20Brad, would you like to tell them what it's Oh, it's a,
- 1:41:23uh, it's a Citron, isn't it?
- 1:41:25That's right.
- 1:41:26Which one?
- 1:41:27All of the, the D the Ds.
- 1:41:29There's, there's something about the Ds and I know that it saved de Gauls
- 1:41:34life and all this kind of thing, and the, the headlights that turned the
- 1:41:37steering wheel and it was revolutionary.
- 1:41:39It looks like a pill bug.
- 1:41:40It is.
- 1:41:41I don't understand that car.
- 1:41:42I will never underst understand that car.
- 1:41:44I've sat in one, I refuse to drive it just like I refuse to watch, drive to survive.
- 1:41:48I just, I will not do it.
- 1:41:50It's just, it's something angers me about the car.
- 1:41:53So I don't know what it is.
- 1:41:54Okay.
- 1:41:55All right.
- 1:41:56So my last one for the day, you have many, many, many more to put up with,
- 1:42:01but last one for today is as far as your driving goes and your racing goes, what is
- 1:42:08something that you're relatively good at and what is your biggest area to improve?
- 1:42:16Ooh.
- 1:42:19And relative is relative to yourself.
- 1:42:21Not relative to the, you know, the gods of racing.
- 1:42:24Yeah.
- 1:42:25I've only tracked at least road course tracked front wheel drive
- 1:42:30cars, so I've never really had the opportunity to learn heel toe.
- 1:42:34So I need, I would love to, to work on heel-toe if I can
- 1:42:37ever get behind the wheel.
- 1:42:39Uh, For an extensive period of time in a rear-wheel drive vehicle launch track.
- 1:42:44So what would be something you're relatively good at though, that
- 1:42:47I'm gonna need to think about?
- 1:42:48Everybody does.
- 1:42:50The last one's easy.
- 1:42:51It's like, I need to do this, this.
- 1:42:54Yeah.
- 1:42:57I'm having, I'm struggling with your positive question because I've driven
- 1:43:03so many different disciplines of racing.
- 1:43:05So when it comes to carting my racecraft and traffic management,
- 1:43:09I think is really good.
- 1:43:10I find my way through, I'm pretty quick.
- 1:43:12I always joke that I'm pretty fast for a fat hit.
- 1:43:14I qualify.
- 1:43:15Well, I've always qualified.
- 1:43:17Well.
- 1:43:17So that translated into autocross and time trials.
- 1:43:20So I enjoy that.
- 1:43:21Those are why, those are the disciplines I gravitate to.
- 1:43:24Um, so I, while he's talking or thinking I did come up with my two or, or with
- 1:43:31my, uh, The things that I'm good at, apparently, I, I've always been told
- 1:43:36this by people that have watched me autocross, but I'm extremely smooth.
- 1:43:39Mm-hmm.
- 1:43:40Which you don't really see in autocross usually.
- 1:43:42No.
- 1:43:43Uh, and I don't know if that's because of it translates from, you
- 1:43:45know, my track time or whatever.
- 1:43:47Uh, so being really smooth and really consistent, I would say, or my.
- 1:43:52Pluses, those are good.
- 1:43:54I'd say my negative is getting more comfortable with higher horsepower cars.
- 1:43:59I have a certain threshold that I'm comfortable with.
- 1:44:01It used to be I don't wanna drive anything when we were 300 horsepower.
- 1:44:05Once I crossed that and I got into the four hundreds, I was like, that's okay.
- 1:44:09When I get behind the wheel of some of these new cars that are 6, 7,
- 1:44:13800 horsepower, like I got to drive a Camaro that made 800 horsepower.
- 1:44:18It's a bit much, it's a bit daunting.
- 1:44:20I have to re, I have to really reign myself in because I wanna drive it
- 1:44:24like a 200 horsepower civic and I can't, you know, uh, I do have a 10.
- 1:44:28You could, it wouldn't end well, but no it wouldn't.
- 1:44:31And you know, I do have a slight propensity or affinity for driving off
- 1:44:36of the front wheels now, not that I've never owned or haven't raced rear wheel
- 1:44:40drive cars for me, they're all the same.
- 1:44:42It's four wheels and a steering wheel, but it's the horsepower thing that gets
- 1:44:45me, I get in my own head and I almost become too patient at, you know, when
- 1:44:51I should be getting on the throttle.
- 1:44:53I start just really screwing stuff up because I'm like, I'm worried
- 1:44:56that it's gonna break loose and that I'm not gonna be able to catch it.
- 1:44:58And that's also because generally it's not my car.
- 1:45:00You know, if it was right my Audi R eight, I'd be like, haha, whatever.
- 1:45:04Let's go.
- 1:45:05But in, when you're borrowing somebody else's car, it's like, did, did they
- 1:45:08get track insurance or I don't know.
- 1:45:10So that's not the question you want to ask when you're getting in the car
- 1:45:13after they've thrown into the keys, Hey, do you have insurance on this?
- 1:45:16Now, I will say it doesn't bother me from the right seat.
- 1:45:19I've ridden in all sorts of cars and it never bothers me.
- 1:45:21Even though people say it's 20 miles an hour faster in the
- 1:45:24right seat, it, it never bugs me.
- 1:45:26It's when I'm behind the wheel that because I do drive by feel a lot and
- 1:45:31I use data as well, I just, I get this overwhelming nervous sensation when I'm in
- 1:45:36a car of, you know, over 500 horsepower.
- 1:45:37Mm-hmm.
- 1:45:40It's when everything goes plaid.
- 1:45:41Yeah, I get it.
- 1:45:42Yeah.
- 1:45:42Yeah.
- 1:45:44When everything goes plaid, okay, we've lost her, but we're gonna come back.
- 1:45:50She knows.
- 1:45:51That's why the Tesla's called the plaid too, right?
- 1:45:53Funny.
- 1:45:54She, they clicked with her a little later, you know, sometimes, sorry.
- 1:45:58It's funny.
- 1:45:59Sometimes I joke.
- 1:46:00Start in the East Coast and you know, they work their way.
- 1:46:04Sorry.
- 1:46:04That's just pretty funny.

- 1:48:06notes, but I'm gonna try.
- 1:48:10I don't type as well as Eric talks, so there's that.

- 1:48:23Absolutely.
- 1:48:24It's always fun making new friends and like we said before, that's
- 1:48:27the whole point of this, is to continue to spread the enthusiasm,
- 1:48:30whether it's through garage heroes and training or through break fix.
- 1:48:33Find your niche in the vehicle enthusiasts in Motor Sport
- 1:48:36world and hang onto that, right?

- 1:48:40of trouble you'll get yourself into.
- 1:48:42And if you're at any of the million different events we go to, whether
- 1:48:45it's G Hits or us, come and talk to us.
- 1:48:48Say hi.
- 1:48:49You know, we're, we're friendly folks.
- 1:48:50We don't bite well.
- 1:48:51Vicky might, but you know, whatever.
- 1:48:54It's more of a, it's more of a nibble, but you know, it's fine.
- 1:48:57She doesn't need that much to survive.
- 1:48:59Now me, I could know off a leg and still be hungry, but that's beside the point.
- 1:49:03Now.
- 1:49:03Now we, while we're here speaking of knowing legs, why would you
- 1:49:06take up valuable space in your stomach for this thing you call
- 1:49:09salad when you could have meat?
- 1:49:13Did I say sal?
- 1:49:14I meant in salad.
- 1:49:17Ah.
- 1:49:17Which yeah, that, that's the green thing, right?
- 1:49:20We don't, that's the green thing.
- 1:49:21But Insala has ground beef and ah, salsa and Oh, that's how he is doing.
- 1:49:27He didn't tell me that you had me at beef.
- 1:49:31Yeah.
- 1:49:31Yeah.
- 1:49:32So until we meet you guys in person finally, and uh, we seem to hang
- 1:49:36out at all the same places yet.
- 1:49:37We've been two ships crossing in the wind.
- 1:49:39We will, uh, look forward to it, listening to the podcast.
- 1:49:42Always fun.
- 1:49:43And, uh, thanks again for having us on and thanks for coming on.
- 1:49:46Thank you.
- 1:49:47Thank you.
- 1:50:22How you doing Miss Vicky?
- 1:50:24I'm tired.
- 1:50:26I'm are, are you not home, I'm guessing?
- 1:50:28No, I'm home.
- 1:50:30I'm at work.
- 1:50:31I was gonna say, yeah, work down, down south.
- 1:50:34Uh, no, I'm just, uh, well south of where we live, but you know.
- 1:50:37Yeah.
- 1:50:38Uh, I mean, we live north of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and I work
- 1:50:42between Scranton and Wilkesboro.
- 1:50:44Oh, okay.
- 1:50:44I didn't know if you were down in Alabama or not.
- 1:50:46No, that's, that's next week.
- 1:50:48Oh, okay.
- 1:50:49Mm-hmm.
- 1:50:50Yeah.
- 1:50:50Well, Bill's at work.
- 1:50:52He's got that two screen thing so he doesn't watch you.
- 1:50:55I look this way, right?
- 1:50:56My camera's this way.
- 1:50:57Yeah, I screens this way.
- 1:50:59It's a good thing you don't post any of this on YouTube, so.
- 1:51:01Oh, yeah.
- 1:51:03If he's like, why don't we post it on YouTube?
- 1:51:05I'm like, cuz I'm not got good at editing.
- 1:51:06Nobody wants to see this mess.
- 1:51:08That's why.
- 1:51:09So, speaking of which, um, you guys really, I can't remember, you have
- 1:51:13like multiple releases in a week.
- 1:51:14What's your standard release day?
- 1:51:17Uh, normal episode is Monday dominated with us since Tuesday.
- 1:51:21Okay.
- 1:51:21So, and then bonus episodes whenever.
- 1:51:24Okay.
- 1:51:24So we had, we were gonna do part one, part two.
- 1:51:28Can you do the 25th?
- 1:51:30Yeah, nothing's, nothing's spoken for on our end.
- 1:51:33Okay.
- 1:51:33August.
- 1:51:33Cause ours is, ours is locked for the 23rd.
- 1:51:36Yes.
- 1:51:36August.
- 1:51:37Okay.
- 1:51:38So part one, and then you guys will, uh, I guess you'll post it, uh, as, uh,
- 1:51:45granary Motorsports crossover part two or whatever, however you guys wanna title it.
- 1:51:49And then eventually, do you want us to repost it on our end?
- 1:51:53Do you want, or how do you want that to work?
- 1:51:57It doesn't matter.
- 1:51:57Well, if, if we want to, uh, like if you wanna post what we do with you
- 1:52:02under your feed, we can send you a copy.
- 1:52:05Same.
- 1:52:06Yeah, that'd be, that'd be perfect.
- 1:52:07And I can launch that on Thursday as a bonus, so that's easy.
- 1:52:10Ok.
- 1:52:10Yeah.
- 1:52:11Yeah.
- 1:52:11Cuz I mean, you know, neither one of us is gonna have any, uh, Domination
- 1:52:18of the world, but you know, if we could raise both boats, that would be awesome.
- 1:52:21A a hundred percent.
- 1:52:22Do you want us to send you part one then as well?
- 1:52:24Sure.
- 1:52:25Whenever, whenever it's ready.
- 1:52:26No big, no hurry.
- 1:52:27I was only wondering if maybe if it took away from us, if we have one-on-one.
- 1:52:31You know, both on, and I guess it doesn't matter, right?
- 1:52:34Doesn't matter.
- 1:52:34Yeah.
- 1:52:36It's okay.
- 1:52:37People will pretty much pick up when they're, uh, listening to
- 1:52:40the same thing for a second time.
- 1:52:41Yeah.
- 1:52:42Right.
- 1:52:42If they don't, they didn't listen very much.
- 1:52:44So a hundred percent.
- 1:52:47So how mechanical are you sir?
- 1:52:50What would you like me to fix?
- 1:52:53Is, is fixing a possibility with your, with your pause.
- 1:52:57I don't need you to fix anything.
- 1:52:59I'm just trying to see.
- 1:53:01So short of rebuilding transmissions, I can pretty much do anything.
- 1:53:05Oh, okay.
- 1:53:06Well then you'll, you'll enjoy this picture then.
- 1:53:09Okay.
- 1:53:09Yeah.
- 1:53:09I don't weld.
- 1:53:10If I could weld, I'd be dangerous.
- 1:53:13Oh yeah.
- 1:53:14Cuz my, my imagination would kick in and I'd be doing all sorts of crazy stuff.
- 1:53:17Right.
- 1:53:18I probably, I'd probably make people like Barbie the welder pretty mad.
- 1:53:20Cause I'm like, oh, look what I, look what I made outta trash from the track.
- 1:53:24Right.
- 1:53:25Yeah.
- 1:53:30I'm just learning welding.
- 1:53:33But you did say that you were getting into that.
- 1:53:35She's trying.
- 1:53:35Yeah.
- 1:53:39It doesn't seem too hard.
- 1:53:40I do art anyway.
- 1:53:41Right.
- 1:53:42So it's the fine motor skills are, are not so much an issue until you, tig.
- 1:53:50My thing is, I, I, I like to be able to see what I'm doing
- 1:53:53and I don't get the whole mask.
- 1:53:55And then you're kind of guessing and you kind of go along and
- 1:53:58it, it just, it weirds me out.
- 1:54:00So I've never wanted to learn it because I wanna lift the mask and I wanna see what
- 1:54:04I'm doing and I just, I know that's a sin and it's not, well, the masks are much
- 1:54:08better now, but you can see, you can see with the mask, so don't, don't feel bad.
- 1:54:13Oh, okay.
- 1:54:13Cuz I've tried some, like helping or whatever, and I'm like, I
- 1:54:16don't know what I'm looking at.
- 1:54:17I can't see anything other than just, it looks like, you
- 1:54:19know, the surface of the sun.
- 1:54:21Yeah.
- 1:54:21That's about it.
- 1:54:23Well, you don't wanna be too, too bright, but you also don't wanna be too dark.
- 1:54:27So they, they have the auto adjust masks now, which are kinda cool.
- 1:54:31Yeah.
- 1:54:31Mm-hmm.
- 1:54:33Uh, there he is.
- 1:54:34There is crew Chief Brad.
- 1:54:40You guys missed trivia night.
- 1:54:42We did that.
- 1:54:43No, sorry.
- 1:54:43We, we kind of got, I listened.
- 1:54:44We lifted, we lifted your style a little bit.
- 1:54:47I listened.
- 1:54:49I was like, we did one just like this.
- 1:54:51Did you play the online version though?
- 1:54:52We had an online version that was twice as long.
- 1:54:55Oh, no, I didn't, I didn't play the online version.
- 1:54:57I was, I, uh, I listened to everything as I drive.
- 1:55:01So, uh, that, that episode was very interesting to record.
- 1:55:04What we realized, you know, since we talked offline last time we were
- 1:55:07recording, there was nothing like setting up, you know, eight voices and then having
- 1:55:11to slice through them all and add silence.
- 1:55:13And I was like, normally I can bust through one of the, a drive
- 1:55:16through and a couple hours.
- 1:55:17It took me almost 11 hours to get through that episode.
- 1:55:20It was idiotic.
- 1:55:21Yeah.
- 1:55:22We had 16 people on one time.
- 1:55:24Ugh, a nightmare.
- 1:55:26It was terrible.
- 1:55:27That's good.
- 1:55:28When we do our awards night, cuz we don't rec, we don't, well some, we record
- 1:55:31those for video purposes, just for the members that, you know, don't show up.
- 1:55:35But yeah, I would never try to edit that.
- 1:55:37It's just a nightmare.
- 1:55:38Yeah, I tried.
- 1:55:39Okay, so this is, this is what we found.
- 1:55:41I don't know if you guys have been playing the home game, but, uh, this is what we
- 1:55:44found as our issue with our BMW M three.
- 1:55:47This is the picture.
- 1:55:48You ready?
- 1:55:48Oh, is the rear sub frame broken?
- 1:55:51Nope.
- 1:55:51No.
- 1:55:51Different.
- 1:55:53How about that?
- 1:55:54Ooh, yummy.
- 1:55:56Is that, that's that count as no bueno that count as bueno or no bueno.
- 1:56:01That's some serious blow by you have there.
- 1:56:03No, that's not the issue.
- 1:56:06No.
- 1:56:06So it's not coming from the cylinder, it's coming from the
- 1:56:10fifth injector got stuck open.
- 1:56:12Oh, that'll do.
- 1:56:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:56:13That'll, it was fantastic.
- 1:56:15Yeah.
- 1:56:16Didn't run really well like that, you know, just in case.
- 1:56:18No, no.
- 1:56:19Yeah.
- 1:56:19We just dropped off a another engine.
- 1:56:22Yep.
- 1:56:22That's what I just got back doing.
- 1:56:25So anyway, that was, well, you have, you have itbs from an M on there.
- 1:56:28Cause isn't yours just a regular three 30 or is it No, that's,
- 1:56:31that's our, that's our M three.
- 1:56:32Oh, okay, then.
- 1:56:33That makes sense.
- 1:56:33Cause I was like, only the MSS have itbs, so.
- 1:56:36Right.
- 1:56:36Yeah.
- 1:56:37There you go.
- 1:56:38Well, that's, that's easy fix.
- 1:56:39I mean, a hundred dollar injector.
- 1:56:40Right.
- 1:56:40And you're kind of on your way.
- 1:56:42No, no, no, no, no.
- 1:56:46It, it, uh, it did more than that.
- 1:56:50Oh, well, that's no good then.
- 1:56:51That's where I was at.
- 1:56:53Yeah, exactly.
- 1:56:54Yeah.
- 1:56:54Less, less than thrilled, shall we say.
- 1:56:57Mm-hmm.
- 1:56:57So I just dropped off the, uh, he opened it up and he sent me that picture.
- 1:57:00I'm like, I don't know exactly why that is, but I know that that is no bueno.
- 1:57:08How you doing, Brad?
- 1:57:09Good.
- 1:57:09How is everybody else doing other than the issues with the M three?
- 1:57:14Yeah.
- 1:57:14Well, you know, all of our cars started breaking at once.
- 1:57:17Yeah.
- 1:57:17It's fantastic.
- 1:57:18That's the way it works.
- 1:57:19They all, they talk to each other and they're all like, you know
- 1:57:21what, we're on the same cycle.
- 1:57:22We're, we're on on strike break at once.
- 1:57:25We're on strike.
- 1:57:26They're like bees.
- 1:57:27I'm telling you, you piss off one wasp and then they all come after you.
- 1:57:31Yeah.
- 1:57:31Stop with, stop with the, we're on strike until they get
- 1:57:34rid of the 10% ethanol fuel.
- 1:57:36Yeah.
- 1:57:36Pretty much.
- 1:57:37That's nothing for us.
- 1:57:38But anyway, that's a different story.
- 1:57:40We can get ourselves in lots of trouble with that.
- 1:57:43Um, anything you guys need us to bring up during the episode?
- 1:57:47Oh, it's a free for all.
- 1:57:48We're just as prepared as we always are.
- 1:57:50Like, you know, when we do our drive, drive through episodes, you
- 1:57:52know, we're just gonna send it.
- 1:57:540%, 0%.
- 1:57:57It is very weird being on the other side of the microphone.
- 1:58:00I mean, it's uncomfortable, isn't it?
- 1:58:02I'm always on this side of the microphone.
- 1:58:04I don't know what you're talking about, Eric.
- 1:58:06I just dunno what to expect.
- 1:58:07It's like the, it's like Monty Python episode, right?
- 1:58:09Well, seriously shared it with you, but we didn't want to,
- 1:58:11cuz it's way more fun this way.
- 1:58:13Vicky, do you have the doc by the way?
- 1:58:14I do.
- 1:58:15Okay.
- 1:58:15Very well.
- 1:58:17Well, I'm glad they're prepared.
- 1:58:18Well, somebody's gotta be prepared.
