Latest / The Bill Handel Show / Iran War Ceasefire Holding | LAPD: Forget Growing, Stop Shrinking
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Bill Handle on demand from KFI AM
- 0:05Speaker 1: six forty.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Go Handle here a good morning to one and all.
- 0:12Speaker 2: One of the things, well, the big international story, of course,
- 0:16Speaker 2: is what's going on with Iran, United States, Israel, and Lebanon.
- 0:20Speaker 2: So just an hour before the civilization of Iran was
- 0:26Speaker 2: to disappear.
- 0:27Speaker 3: That Iran would be bombed.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Into the Stone Age and the United States President Trump
- 0:35Speaker 2: was going to attack the infrastructure, all the bridges, and
- 0:38Speaker 2: all the power plants in Iran, which basically would put
- 0:42Speaker 2: it in the Stone Age. An hour before. Hold on,
- 0:45Speaker 2: I'm about to sneeze. Okay, there we go. And the
- 0:54Speaker 2: President had said if the straits those straight up four
- 0:58Speaker 2: moves does not open up where there'll be free transit
- 1:02Speaker 2: as it was prior to the war, then the attack
- 1:06Speaker 2: will happen.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So it was announced that the Strait of Hormuz will
- 1:12Speaker 2: open up. All right, here's the problem. It hasn't. Iran
- 1:19Speaker 2: still controls the strait and it's not letting shipping through.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And wait a minute, now. Carolyn Levitt yesterday in a
- 1:27Speaker 2: press conference, when asked about the Strait of Hormuz being
- 1:30Speaker 2: closed by a reporter when she was giving a press conference,
- 1:34Speaker 2: said maybe that's the news that's being reported, but behind
- 1:37Speaker 2: the scenes, it's a very different thing. Well, behind the scenes,
- 1:41Speaker 2: the Strait of Hormuz is still closed, and so what
- 1:46Speaker 2: ended up happening, And this is where the ceasefire has
- 1:49Speaker 2: gone south.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And JD.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Vance has said, it's just a misunderstanding between the ADIT
- 1:55Speaker 2: and the United States and Iran. And this has to
- 1:58Speaker 2: do with Israel's bombing of Lebanon and the attack was
- 2:03Speaker 2: it yesterday was the most forceful attack that Israel has
- 2:10Speaker 2: has attacked Lebanon.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I mean, just it was insane.
- 2:14Speaker 2: So what Iran has said that the peace they cease fire,
- 2:19Speaker 2: if you will, is predicated on Israel stopping the bombing
- 2:23Speaker 2: of Beirut Lebanon, and the United States says, oh no,
- 2:28Speaker 2: that wasn't part of it. And Israel said, certainly, that
- 2:31Speaker 2: wasn't part of it. You know, we have nothing to
- 2:33Speaker 2: do with that, and we're going to continue continue fighting.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Has Bellah, Well, the Pakistanis who were the mediator said yes,
- 2:41Speaker 2: that was included stopping the bombing, and Iran said yes,
- 2:46Speaker 2: that was included. So there it is. Was it included
- 2:51Speaker 2: or not? And we've got the United States saying it
- 2:54Speaker 2: wasn't included.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Iran says it was included.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Uh And in the middle of the middle of all this,
- 3:00Speaker 2: Horrmus is still blocked.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Now.
- 3:03Speaker 2: That puts the Trump administration in a very interesting position
- 3:06Speaker 2: because it has gone from what the demands have been
- 3:11Speaker 2: all the way down to simply the Strait of Hormuz.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's still blocked. Everything the United States has demanded has
- 3:21Speaker 2: not happened. Key US demands the nuclear program. Iran must
- 3:26Speaker 2: dismantle its three main nuclear sites and all uranium enrichment,
- 3:32Speaker 2: hand over its existing stockpile of enriched uranium to the
- 3:36Speaker 2: International Atomic Energy Commission or agency. It's saying, no one's
- 3:41Speaker 2: going to stop us from our nuclear enrichment process. We're
- 3:46Speaker 2: keeping it, okay. That's for starting military restrictions, a permanent
- 3:51Speaker 2: commitment never to develop nuclear weapons, strict limits on the
- 3:55Speaker 2: range and number of ballistic missiles. No, that's not going
- 3:58Speaker 2: to happen, what Iran says, and into support for regional
- 4:03Speaker 2: proxies like hisbo law and a hall to strike on
- 4:07Speaker 2: regional energy facilities around the Gulf.
- 4:09Speaker 3: No, no, we don't agree to that.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Maritime access, immediate and full reopening of the Strait of
- 4:17Speaker 2: Hormuz for safe passage where it becomes an international waterway
- 4:22Speaker 2: again where Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz. Well,
- 4:29Speaker 2: they are controlling the Straight of Hormuz and they are
- 4:31Speaker 2: stopping international traffic from going through. So the incentives for
- 4:38Speaker 2: the US is the.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Lifting of nuclear related sanctions.
- 4:44Speaker 2: That's what the US will is being asked to do.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Iran wants assistance in developing a civilian nuclear program or
- 4:54Speaker 2: excuse me, that's the United States a position, and so
- 4:57Speaker 2: basically Iran's position is none of that what a mari
- 5:00Speaker 2: and wants nothing. Okay, Now, Iran has its ten points
- 5:05Speaker 2: ceasefire plan, non aggression, the US will halt all hostilities. Well,
- 5:11Speaker 2: the only thing that the US has agreed to is
- 5:17Speaker 2: the straight or horn moves. That's all it wants. You
- 5:19Speaker 2: open up the waterway and we're fine with the ceasefire
- 5:22Speaker 2: and giving us two weeks to negotiate.
- 5:25Speaker 3: All the other stuff. But what is going to negotiate? Okay.
- 5:29Speaker 2: The other issue is that Iran's proposal charging tolls to ships,
- 5:34Speaker 2: making it a toll booth using the strait. Now this
- 5:38Speaker 2: one is really interesting because Iran says, okay, we'll open
- 5:42Speaker 2: it up maybe kind of, but we want to charge
- 5:44Speaker 2: ships from going through Panama Canal, charge us, for example,
- 5:47Speaker 2: big money. And Trump said, you know, that's not a
- 5:50Speaker 2: bad idea, but let's do it together Iran in the
- 5:54Speaker 2: United States, we can join forces and charge ships from
- 5:58Speaker 2: going for going through. This is Trump the businessman, This
- 6:03Speaker 2: is Trump the business negotiator. Acceptance of the iranium enrichment.
- 6:08Speaker 2: That's what Iran says, You accept our Iranian richment.
- 6:11Speaker 3: We're not moving on that one.
- 6:13Speaker 2: The lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions against Iran.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Just lifting of all the sanctions, that's what Iran wants.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Termination of all UN Security Council resolutions on Iran, which
- 6:27Speaker 2: have happened big time. No, that's all done. There will
- 6:31Speaker 2: be no more Security Council resolutions. Termination of all of
- 6:38Speaker 2: the Board of Governor's resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency,
- 6:43Speaker 2: which is the nuclear watchdog and they had the observers
- 6:48Speaker 2: in Iran. That stops, stops completely. We want our money
- 6:54Speaker 2: on two levels. One reparations for the bombing that you did.
- 7:00Speaker 2: We want to fix everything and you pay for it
- 7:03Speaker 2: the United States. And the other thing is we want
- 7:08Speaker 2: our money back because the United States is holding one
- 7:11Speaker 2: hundred one hundred and twenty billion dollars in frozen assets.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Two billions of it. Well, the world is two billion
- 7:18Speaker 2: of it in the United States. Now, Obama got a
- 7:22Speaker 2: lot of grief for releasing a couple of billion dollars
- 7:25Speaker 2: to Iran.
- 7:26Speaker 3: And you sold that Iran. You're paying for Iran.
- 7:29Speaker 2: That was Iranian money, and that was in response to
- 7:33Speaker 2: the nuclear deal that Iran the United States in Iran cut.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And then the argument is did it stop Iran from moving.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Forward with its nuclear program? Yes?
- 7:44Speaker 2: No, the administration says it didn't. We just gave up
- 7:47Speaker 2: and Iran got the better of it. But the bottom
- 7:50Speaker 2: line right now, right now is the President says the
- 7:56Speaker 2: opening of the straits is critical. That is what this
- 8:00Speaker 2: ceasefire is based on. Everything else is open for negotiation.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Iran says no to everything else, and the Strait of
- 8:09Speaker 2: Hormuz is closed.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Now.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Who won that one? Who's ahead on that one? That's unfortunate.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And then the political backlash is just unbelievable, which at
- 8:22Speaker 2: some point we'll talk about over the next few days.
- 8:25Speaker 2: All Right, Huntington Beach is Huntington Beach. We're a state
- 8:30Speaker 2: that is as bad as blue as it gets. Now,
- 8:35Speaker 2: there are pockets in hunting and Beach here in southern
- 8:38Speaker 2: California particularly, it's Maga city. There's no way around it.
- 8:43Speaker 2: This is like Austin, Texas. You've got Austin in the
- 8:46Speaker 2: middle of Texas. And how do you know you're in Austin,
- 8:49Speaker 2: which is a very liberal, very liberal city.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Well, there are very few pickup trucks.
- 8:55Speaker 2: The ones that are there, you don't see American flags
- 8:58Speaker 2: floating at the back of them, and you don't see
- 9:01Speaker 2: shotguns in the back window, where if you go to
- 9:04Speaker 2: the rest of Texas, it is law that you have
- 9:06Speaker 2: to have that. Huntington Beach is in the middle of
- 9:10Speaker 2: this Maga revolution, and it's happening more and more. Now,
- 9:14Speaker 2: keep in mind that Orange County is becoming purple, but
- 9:19Speaker 2: not in hunting Beach. City attorney and the city council,
- 9:24Speaker 2: lawsuits against Newsom's administration, protests against COVID restrictions, the city
- 9:31Speaker 2: council's vote to place a plaque outside the public library
- 9:34Speaker 2: spelling out MAGA. I mean, that is terrific and it's
- 9:41Speaker 2: like the Ten Commandment sitting outside of the library. Now
- 9:47Speaker 2: a lot of people think Huntington Beach has become a
- 9:50Speaker 2: national laughing stock.
- 9:51Speaker 3: But it's not.
- 9:53Speaker 2: The City Council has been transformed in twenty twenty to
- 9:57Speaker 2: a narrow Democratic majority, to an all Republican body. I
- 10:02Speaker 2: mean to the point where the more conservative you are,
- 10:06Speaker 2: the more maga you are, the better off you are.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Even to the point where you have one of the
- 10:13Speaker 2: council people running for governor and people are taking it seriously.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Mayor Casey mccohone says, we've morphed into this epicenter of
- 10:22Speaker 2: fighting back where the model that every city can follow.
- 10:28Speaker 2: So it's maga by the seat is what it's called.
- 10:33Speaker 2: This gra Cie vander Mark Gadfly turned council member, is
- 10:38Speaker 2: looking for an Assembly seat. Tony Scritland Strickland, who is
- 10:43Speaker 2: on or was on the City Council is and one
- 10:47Speaker 2: Estate Senate seat last spring. He is looking at a
- 10:52Speaker 2: governor's run and people are taking it seriously. Steve Hilton
- 10:56Speaker 2: another one. Now, this guy is serious about running for
- 10:59Speaker 2: governor and is considered a real player. California Republican Party
- 11:06Speaker 2: chairwoman Now, the California Republican Party, Okay, they're as crazy
- 11:10Speaker 2: as anybody. The chair Coran Rankin says that the Huntington
- 11:17Speaker 2: Beach crew can win statewide office. What happened there proves
- 11:22Speaker 2: that conservative leadership works.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Currently, we have a.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Former mayor of San Francisco who's the governor, and you
- 11:29Speaker 2: look at the contrast of how each of those cities are.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So once again, you've got this little island of MAGA
- 11:37Speaker 2: members who are as conservative and pro Trump as you
- 11:41Speaker 2: can get.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Now you've got culture wars.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You know, the even hunts And Beach the residents are
- 11:49Speaker 2: tired of the culture wars and rejected two ballot measures
- 11:53Speaker 2: last year trying to give the city council even more
- 11:56Speaker 2: control over the municipal municipal library system. And why do
- 12:01Speaker 2: they want more control? Well, because the library was providing
- 12:04Speaker 2: pornography to children. Because if you mentioned LGBTQ, even mentioned
- 12:10Speaker 2: that there is an LGBTQ community, that is pornography, because
- 12:16Speaker 2: as you know, LGBTQ members are perverts, and homosexual sex
- 12:23Speaker 2: is perversion. Until we find one of those televangelists who
- 12:32Speaker 2: starts apologizing for stopping four year olds.
- 12:36Speaker 3: It's it's a tough one. Now.
- 12:39Speaker 2: The good news about Huntington Beach, it's a very small city,
- 12:44Speaker 2: it's this island, and it seems to be an issue
- 12:47Speaker 2: with the other good news. It's a small city where
- 12:51Speaker 2: it's a magnet for what I view as the crazy people,
- 12:55Speaker 2: not just conservatives. And I'm fine with conservatives. I have
- 12:58Speaker 2: no problem with conservatives elections where the country goes conservative
- 13:04Speaker 2: as long as it's not crazy conservative. And you can't
- 13:08Speaker 2: go you can't swing both ways. You really can't AOC.
- 13:12Speaker 2: You go to AOC's office and what do you see.
- 13:16Speaker 2: There's a huge portrait of Karl Marx in the office.
- 13:20Speaker 2: This goes a little bit too much. And certainly the
- 13:23Speaker 2: right wing is now in the news. And as we know,
- 13:28Speaker 2: look at Fox, look at CNN. By the way, both
- 13:31Speaker 2: are biased. I don't misunderstand. I argue and I agree
- 13:35Speaker 2: that both are biased. But there is bias with a
- 13:38Speaker 2: capital B in bold on the on the side of
- 13:43Speaker 2: Fox News, and the bias is with a small B,
- 13:47Speaker 2: lowercase B on CNN. Okay, Karen Bass who is again
- 13:53Speaker 2: running for mayor, her second go round, and she's changed
- 13:57Speaker 2: her tune. Well, one of the tunes is she thinks
- 13:59Speaker 2: she's going to win and that's not going to happen,
- 14:03Speaker 2: and the other one is her plans from regrowing the
- 14:07Speaker 2: LAPD to Okay, let's maintain current staffing levels.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Staffing right now.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Is the lowest has been in twenty three years. Okay,
- 14:18Speaker 2: so that is horrific. But crime is down in the city,
- 14:23Speaker 2: and so there's an argument saying, why do we have
- 14:26Speaker 2: to spend the money if crime is down. When she
- 14:29Speaker 2: ran for mayor four years ago, she wanted to regrow
- 14:33Speaker 2: the LAPD to ninety five hundred officers. That's the sort
- 14:38Speaker 2: of the sweet spot. And now she's facing this huge
- 14:43Speaker 2: budget crunch and her plan is shifted, and so the
- 14:46Speaker 2: aim going forward, she told The Times, is to simply
- 14:49Speaker 2: stop the department from getting smaller and fewer and fewer
- 14:54Speaker 2: people are applying to be police. From what I understand,
- 14:57Speaker 2: one of the things about police is they have not
- 15:01Speaker 2: reduced their requirements from what I understand to be a cop.
- 15:04Speaker 2: They have kept their requirements at a pretty high level.
- 15:08Speaker 2: It is not easy to become a police officer, as
- 15:11Speaker 2: it should not be. So as of this week, the
- 15:14Speaker 2: department had eighty six hundred and seventy seven sworn personnel.
- 15:19Speaker 2: That's the lowest in a quarter of a century, and
- 15:23Speaker 2: officials are thinking there won't be enough new cops replace
- 15:27Speaker 2: those that are leaving or retiring. And those are a
- 15:30Speaker 2: ton of cops because it is not a fun job.
- 15:36Speaker 2: From what I understand, you cops used to be held
- 15:39Speaker 2: on an amazingly high pedestal. You go to New York,
- 15:44Speaker 2: for example. One of the things about police officers, first
- 15:47Speaker 2: of all, there's always the shorter of powdered sugar in
- 15:51Speaker 2: New York.
- 15:51Speaker 3: You're aware of that.
- 15:53Speaker 2: That, by the way, is a joke that every cop
- 15:56Speaker 2: is at the donut shop and they have of powdered
- 16:00Speaker 2: sugar knownits So it looks like dandriff On. Never mind,
- 16:03Speaker 2: that is a stretch, to say the least. So who
- 16:07Speaker 2: is going to be our next mayor? Well, the front
- 16:12Speaker 2: runner at this point is Nithia Ramen Noodles, who is
- 16:19Speaker 2: obviously a large opponent who used to be an ally
- 16:22Speaker 2: of Karen Bass, by the way, but.
- 16:26Speaker 3: No longer to say the least. So what is going
- 16:29Speaker 3: to happen? Well, the problem is, I think La is ungovernable.
- 16:34Speaker 2: There's a certain organizations, certain cities, certain municipalities that are
- 16:39Speaker 2: simply ungovernable. I think LA is one of those simply
- 16:43Speaker 2: because the money that is being paid the unions. The
- 16:48Speaker 2: unions are very powerful here and the raises are. I'm
- 16:54Speaker 2: not saying they're going crazy, but they're going up substantially.
- 16:58Speaker 2: And you've got the cost of every thing goes up,
- 17:01Speaker 2: you know, inflation hits everybody. And you were in the
- 17:05Speaker 2: middle of a budget shortfall. Because programs don't disappear once
- 17:11Speaker 2: they start. Here's one thing that happens, and so almost
- 17:13Speaker 2: across every government, all of a sudden, there's enough money
- 17:17Speaker 2: to pay for virtually anything. There's a surplus. State did
- 17:19Speaker 2: this right? A surplus of money comes in. We have
- 17:22Speaker 2: a great financial year. Stocks are up, people make more money,
- 17:27Speaker 2: and California makes the vast majority of money off income tax,
- 17:31Speaker 2: which other states do not.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Well.
- 17:33Speaker 2: In great years, there's tons of money, and then in
- 17:36Speaker 2: bad years there is not tons of money. But you
- 17:40Speaker 2: know what happens. In great years, We've got the money,
- 17:43Speaker 2: and we're talking about we the legislators. We have money,
- 17:47Speaker 2: So let's set up some entitlement programs because we have
- 17:51Speaker 2: the money to.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Pay for it, hippie.
- 17:54Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden there's no money, but
- 17:57Speaker 2: the entitled programs keep on going.
- 17:59Speaker 3: And what happen up in shortfall? Big time?
- 18:02Speaker 1: How can we have what they call a surplus or
- 18:05Speaker 1: how can we have money when we still have infrastructure
- 18:08Speaker 1: issues like roadways and things like that. How can we
- 18:13Speaker 1: say we've got oh, we've got money for these programs
- 18:16Speaker 1: when we're not investing into the schools investing into this now.
- 18:22Speaker 2: And I will tell you why. Because when you run
- 18:24Speaker 2: for office and you're in a district and bringing new
- 18:28Speaker 2: programs to the district and hiring people out of the district,
- 18:33Speaker 2: you get elected. And no one gets elected on maintenance.
- 18:37Speaker 2: No one gets elected on mowing the lawng the lawns
- 18:41Speaker 2: in municipal parks. Because what is the most important thing
- 18:45Speaker 2: to any legislator, to any congress person, to any senator.
- 18:49Speaker 2: The number one requirement get re elected. That's it, get
- 18:54Speaker 2: re elected. That's more important than anything.
- 18:58Speaker 3: You know, how much.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Surplus you and I would have if we didn't pay
- 19:01Speaker 1: our rent and didn't pay water bills and didn't pay
- 19:04Speaker 1: the basics.
- 19:05Speaker 3: We have so much superlus, that's true. But we don't
- 19:08Speaker 3: have to be elected either. We are who we are.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Okay, coming up, the US fertility rate dropping dropping dropping?
- 19:17Speaker 2: Does that mean people are not stooping? Stopping stopping seems
- 19:21Speaker 2: to be the case, And I'll share that with you
- 19:24Speaker 2: when we come back KFI Am six. You've been listening
