- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06movie talk show where each week one of us takes the movie off
- 0:08our show, presents it to the other, and discusses it at
- 0:11length. This week we've got coming off
- 0:20of Dave Shelf 1979's Mad Max, directed by George Miller, Co
- 0:26Written by George Miller as well, coming from the Outback of
- 0:29Australia. David, welcome back to the
- 0:32couch. How are you doing this week?
- 0:33And perhaps most importantly, why this movie and why now?
- 0:38I'm not on the couch and you know it because people can't
- 0:41drive in the snow. Well, you can't.
- 0:43There's like 30 car accident on the 401.
- 0:46But then again, Mr. T 98, so I don't know.
- 0:49Maybe there wasn't. And to answer your following
- 0:52questions, why and why now? Frankly, I'm trying to be a
- 0:56little less random with my movie choices.
- 0:58Finally, five years in. Yeah, I went to the land down
- 1:02under. So I went down under my TV in
- 1:05the cabinet where I keep my 4K movies, then grabbed Mad Max for
- 1:10reviewing. That's what happened because you
- 1:12were in Australia, correct? Yeah.
- 1:15Yeah, that's right. That's the land down under, I
- 1:17believe. Did I say that?
- 1:19Right. I went down under my TV.
- 1:21That was your connection. Less about the movie itself, the
- 1:24selection, but rather because I was down under.
- 1:27I went down under my TV. Don't know what to tell you.
- 1:30I gotta go buy the script. I have a writer now.
- 1:33I hired them 14. We cut these things out.
- 1:39It's their first week working on it.
- 1:40I'll give them feedback. I think I've owned this movie
- 1:44for at least three years. If you recall, I grabbed it on
- 1:47the Wellington Walk. Absolutely.
- 1:49I watched it once, probably about a year ago.
- 1:52Finally. OK, but wasn't ready to bring it
- 1:55out yet. No, I don't know why, because I
- 1:57didn't have a good enough reason.
- 1:58Yeah, you've been too random, too.
- 2:01And I wasn't sure how it made me feel when I watched it a year
- 2:05ago. So hopefully watching it this
- 2:06time and through our lively discussion with you, we'll get
- 2:09to the bottom of those feelings. But how about you?
- 2:12Are you like Phil Collins? And have you just been waiting
- 2:15for this moment to talk about this movie?
- 2:19I got it to the script here. What's your history with this
- 2:22movie, Phil? I don't think I've seen a single
- 2:24frame of this movie in my entire life.
- 2:27I probably mentioned way, way back in our Fury Rd. episode
- 2:30available in the archives. This is not a character or a
- 2:33movie franchise or series that has ever really had any impact
- 2:37on me other than I loved Tina Turner Song We Don't Need
- 2:41Another Hero, which in that movie came out in like 87.
- 2:43That trailer was on a lot and I love Tina Turner always.
- 2:47So those were things, but I honestly had no idea about any
- 2:51other Mad Max iconography or anything.
- 2:54So this was the first time I'd ever seen it, and ultimately the
- 2:59last time I'll ever see this movie, I think.
- 3:01Are you telling me that that title sequence didn't hook you?
- 3:06I mean, I know we're coming off a pretty strong week.
- 3:09But I would say that other than that sort of cha ching of the
- 3:12title itself, nothing about that title sequence, if you can call
- 3:16it that, really had any impact on me.
- 3:18Were you moved by it? Just the simplicity of it buddy.
- 3:21Keep it simple. Black screen, white writing.
- 3:23Alien came out with a great title sequence, so it could have
- 3:26been done. It just wasn't.
- 3:27It wasn't happening in Australia.
- 3:28Perhaps it was only up top, not down under.
- 3:31I think one of the challenges for us as basically new viewers
- 3:36to this movie is it is from 1979.
- 3:39It's an Australian movie, which could have limitations.
- 3:42I don't know how big that country is with their film
- 3:46production. Probably not that big as Reason
- 3:4879, really. Well, that's what I'm thinking
- 3:50like resources wise. Now they made this movie on, I
- 3:53think you mentioned before we jumped on here with the 400,000.
- 3:56I heard a million. But then again, you know my
- 3:58sources. Who knows?
- 4:00It was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most
- 4:03profitable movie of all time, which explains on some level why
- 4:06there's so many sequels. I mean, this is a franchise that
- 4:08has spanned since 1979 all the way through to 2023.
- 4:13Was Furiosa maybe 24? 2024.
- 4:15Yeah, yeah. So like that is a significant
- 4:17length of time for one character to still be in the, I don't
- 4:21wanna say Zeitgeist because I wouldn't say that in the gap
- 4:24between 87 and 2015, the character was always like ever
- 4:29present. However, the fact that they
- 4:32could make a sequel or at least a reboot on some level I would
- 4:35say because Charlize is more the lead, I would say in that movie.
- 4:40Fury Rd. or dialogue. That's right.
- 4:43The idea that this movie created the franchise that would last
- 4:47for 40 years is very surprising to me based on this movie
- 4:51itself. Let's not forget about the video
- 4:53game. Which was fun.
- 4:55Game must have came out just after Fear Road or we wouldn't
- 4:59even know what we were dealing with and it was one of the
- 5:02better movie based video games that I've ever played
- 5:05personally. Yeah, my memory of that is that
- 5:07it wasn't really the movie based.
- 5:09No, not the game itself, but I think just because the movie.
- 5:13The character obviously lives, but I know what George Miller
- 5:16primarily from the Witches of Eastwick and perhaps most
- 5:20importantly in my viewing experience was The Twilight
- 5:23Zone. He did the Terror at 30,000 feet
- 5:27episode with John Lithgow, the gremlin on the plane, which was
- 5:31originally played by William Shatner in the original series.
- 5:34They remade it, updated it, and it's incredible to watch that
- 5:37movie because it's episodic and it's anthological.
- 5:41There's only a couple of segments.
- 5:43Joe Dante segment is is really great.
- 5:45This one in particular are fantastic, but the rest of the
- 5:48movie kind of shit. So I don't think we'll ever take
- 5:50it off the shelf. So he's definitely, he's got
- 5:52some talent for sure. Well, Phillip, before we get too
- 5:55deep into it, people probably wondering what kind of film is
- 5:58this? Who is Max and why is he upset?
- 6:01The IMDb might help. That's a great idea.
- 6:04Check it out. Here we go, short and sweet
- 6:07buddy. In a self destructing world, a
- 6:10vengeful Australian policeman sets out to stop a violent
- 6:15motorcycle gang. They didn't leave anything.
- 6:18Out nothing left on the bone there nothing you know here's
- 6:22what comes to mind when I read that and it's arguably one of my
- 6:25first surprises when watching this movie is I had no idea that
- 6:30the character was at any point a policeman OK there's nothing in
- 6:34fury Rd. that tells me that he is and so you're.
- 6:37Right. So I would have had no.
- 6:39Idea he's retired in. That I guess I would have never
- 6:42guessed that police were involved in this series at all,
- 6:44so that part was interesting. Well, it will be a little fun
- 6:49throughout this episode and maybe see if we connected some
- 6:51dots or we invented some dots to connect between this movie and
- 6:57Fury Road or Furiosa because it is in the same universe.
- 7:01Does it illustrate that is a we can dabble?
- 7:05With absolutely. But I want to get to the halls
- 7:07of justice a few years from now. Basically a shortage of
- 7:12resources in the future, like running out of gas.
- 7:15We're just running out of stuff. Yeah, that part is true in the
- 7:18later movies, right? That's all about the gasoline
- 7:21inferior. You go here for your ammunition.
- 7:23You go here for your gas. You go here.
- 7:25Yeah, for, you know, water. Whatever the case, obviously
- 7:28it's a depleting world for sure. And this is just the beginning
- 7:32of it. So we don't see it like we see
- 7:34it in Fury Rd. but we do see it. So I do enjoy thinking about,
- 7:40OK, this is what's happening now, the safe Fury Rd. it's
- 7:44happening 20 years from now. We can stretch it that like
- 7:48character wise. And I'm like, yeah, OK, that a
- 7:50lot can happen in 20 years if that's your trajectory.
- 7:53So I was able to make that connection and now I don't know
- 7:56if I had to use my imagination a little bit to get there.
- 8:01It makes complete sense to me. It's really the character piece.
- 8:05I wouldn't have guessed who Mad Max started out as, but on the
- 8:09trajectory of it makes some sense.
- 8:11But yeah, it was definitely aware that this was the world
- 8:15that we were coming into this shortages.
- 8:17And whatever else. So that worked fine for you.
- 8:20That's good. I'm happy to hear that.
- 8:22I was a little concerned, a little concerned, feels going to
- 8:24say this is nothing like the world they made in Fury Rd.
- 8:28Where's the CGI, you know? The scope is different, but
- 8:32fundamentally how you get to make a movie in the middle of
- 8:35Australia. I suspect the benefit of that is
- 8:38that you've got a lot of open space, right?
- 8:40And so you can easily create a world, whether it's post
- 8:43apocalyptic or whatever you want to call it.
- 8:45But you can look at the desert and say, yeah, there's no water
- 8:48here, there's no food here, there's no gas.
- 8:51What doesn't make sense to me, of course, is why have sex in
- 8:55the middle of a desert? I'd be worried about the snakes.
- 8:57Oh yeah, yeah, sure. Spiders too.
- 8:59Yeah, absolutely. But unfortunately he has to cut
- 9:02his keeping coming little short because they get a radio call.
- 9:08They have a cop killer out Knight Rider.
- 9:11That's right. Early Francis calling it.
- 9:14I don't think he's in it long enough.
- 9:16I think that we have to set some.
- 9:17Rules. Oh wow.
- 9:18OK. You can't be nominated at the
- 9:21end of the year if you're in the movie for less than 5 minutes.
- 9:25OK. OK.
- 9:26We'll see about the type because it felt like forever.
- 9:31Was in it for 5 minutes and he's yelling and screaming.
- 9:36And then crying. Annoying.
- 9:39Totally annoying. Do you know why he was crying?
- 9:41The only thing I can think of, because it isn't clear and I
- 9:44watched it obviously twice and it didn't really make sense
- 9:46either time. But as I'm talking to you, my
- 9:48thought is perhaps he's been hearing on the radio what's
- 9:53happening and they know they're calling in Max, and the
- 9:57presumption is Max is the baddest of the bad, the best of
- 10:01the best, the Top of the Pops. If I can extrapolate, because
- 10:05Max is on duty, he knows it's over.
- 10:07That's the only thing I can come up with.
- 10:09But it's based on nothing other than assumption, I assume.
- 10:13Drugs. Well, that he's clearly drugs
- 10:15all fucked up. Yeah.
- 10:16And that makes you a little emotional perhaps.
- 10:19Could be. Before we get too deep, let's
- 10:22talk about Mel Gibson, a guy that is off the A list, let's
- 10:26say, in the modern times. But there was a good chunk of
- 10:30maybe 20 years there where he was just very much a go to guy
- 10:33for me. I loved Lethal Weapons, man
- 10:35without a face. I thought he did a great Hamlet
- 10:37for Franco Zeffirelli, things like ransom and conspiracy
- 10:42theory. He was an actor I just love to
- 10:44watch. So it's sad when actors you love
- 10:46to watch turn out to be horrible people, Yeah.
- 10:50He's just misunderstood. It's a little too intense.
- 10:52Definitely. Now, as you were listing off
- 10:55movies, I realized we did. We were soldiers.
- 10:58Well, how about that? I asked you before the show, it
- 11:01said we haven't done a Mel. I took your word for it.
- 11:04Didn't think I had to Fact Check my own co-host, but there it is.
- 11:08Question with Gibson bringing him up specifically at this time
- 11:11is, you know, I've mentioned before about how you can watch
- 11:15certain actors in certain performances and certain roles
- 11:18and think this guy is a superstar.
- 11:20As I alluded to before, Bruce Willis, moonlighting, I just
- 11:23thought, yeah, he's a star. Just give him the right vehicle.
- 11:27He's going to nail it. Yeah.
- 11:29So I wonder how you think about Gibson in this role, because
- 11:32ultimately, this is the first one that defines him for the
- 11:35masses. This movie is super successful
- 11:37enough that he's now in a kind of name and certainly in the
- 11:40second one and beyond. So do you see the traces of that
- 11:44in this performance? Absolutely not.
- 11:46I don't see any of that. The movie was extremely popular.
- 11:50He's a good looking guy. It opened up some doors for him,
- 11:53and fortunate for him, he does know how to act.
- 11:56Yeah, so he was given those opportunities and actually
- 12:00showed his acting prowess because it's similar to Tom
- 12:02Hardy and Fury Rd. He doesn't have a ton of
- 12:05dialogue, so I don't see it. I think the last time you made
- 12:08this sort of reference was La Bamba.
- 12:11Morales just steals the. Movie.
- 12:13Yeah, we were surprised he didn't have.
- 12:15Yeah, where's that structure? Yeah, this is kind of the
- 12:17opposite, if you will. But like him or don't like him
- 12:20as a person. I've enjoyed many of his films
- 12:23and I think that intensity works against him.
- 12:26Sometimes That passion, if you will, is sometimes misguided,
- 12:31but when he's focused on using a script, he's able to bring it.
- 12:35Yeah, I thought the same thing. I just don't think that any of
- 12:38the success that this movie has, I don't think I can attribute it
- 12:42specifically anyway to him, but he is definitely a good looking
- 12:45man. What I know about the sequel,
- 12:47and certainly in my experience with Thunderdome, is that he's
- 12:51more central to that story. This is just getting the ball.
- 12:56And that's all I know. I don't really know the context,
- 12:58but I do think that this is a starting off point for the
- 13:00character. And maybe he shines brighter in
- 13:03the later episodes, as it were, but in this one, I just think,
- 13:06yeah, he's not really exciting me much.
- 13:08Do you think he looks like Tom Berringer?
- 13:11Yeah, I could see a little bit of that, Sure.
- 13:12Young Tom Berenger for sure. Alright, wonderful.
- 13:15One over 3 so far. I've got two more coming at you
- 13:17a little bit later on as we introduce some other characters.
- 13:20I'm excited. We ultimately lose the Knight
- 13:34Rider amidst all of this. Some big explosions.
- 13:37Yeah. I didn't make it, no.
- 13:39But what this movie relies on, I think they all do.
- 13:42And to some extent, are these practical car chases in these
- 13:46early days anyway, practical effects, The big explosions, the
- 13:49cars flipping over and crashing into a variety of other vehicles
- 13:53along the road? I think obviously, sure.
- 13:56And it escalates obviously, as technology increases throughout
- 13:58the years. But in this one, that part is
- 14:01definitely the thing that that is the take away.
- 14:03If you strip away all the other stuff, the spectacle of it is
- 14:06pretty fun to get into. But everything around it, in
- 14:10this early stages, I was sort of like, who's the Knight Rider?
- 14:12Why do I care? Why is he crying?
- 14:14Why is he screaming? I'm kind of annoyed and
- 14:18therefore a little bit out of my comfort zone, let's say.
- 14:21It's funny how something so little right with just having
- 14:25Knight Rider ball his eyes out for like 13 seconds can take
- 14:29away from what is a pretty cool scene and what you think is
- 14:33going to be a tone setter. I think it's a little misleading
- 14:37because I think this movie suffers from moments where
- 14:39nothing much is happening. It's kind of slow, and that's
- 14:42fine. Every movie has to tell the
- 14:44story and you can't be action all the time.
- 14:46Yeah, I mean, that's movies in general, right?
- 14:48You can't have high octane. One of the things that I love so
- 14:50much about Fury Rd. I should say, love so much at
- 14:54the first time. I hated it but in the rewatch
- 14:56was really appreciating just the pace of the action and how it
- 15:00doesn't really slow down. Yeah, go, go, go.
- 15:02And yeah, this one definitely gears down, if you will, to
- 15:09neutral pretty pretty frequently.
- 15:11And we have that first scene section of that here where we go
- 15:15back to Max as homebody and he's puttering around the kitchen and
- 15:20he's making food and bizarrely, his wife just playing saxophone
- 15:25in the corner. Speaking of unexpected things I
- 15:29would have never thought would have happened in a movie, here
- 15:32it is. She's pretty damn good.
- 15:33Fine. But it's like got a spotlight
- 15:35above her. Like, it's a very strange home
- 15:38life that your wife is just standing in the corner playing
- 15:40saxophone, which is an odd choice that I don't know if I
- 15:43was tickled by or if I was put off by, but it was definitely
- 15:46something to see. I was more focused on the
- 15:49leather pants. Where's your stance?
- 15:52You know, not since I was in my 20s.
- 15:54Oh, so you've actually worn leather?
- 15:55Purse not what? Are you crazy?
- 15:58No, but in my 20s I think I'm wearing leather pants.
- 16:00Come on. I don't know what you did in
- 16:03your 20s or your physique. No, I've never worn leather
- 16:05pants. I don't know if I've ever worn
- 16:07leather anything. What about your wallet?
- 16:09Sure, it's leather. No, it's not leather.
- 16:11Velcro. No Spiderman leather perhaps?
- 16:16You know I'm ahead of the game. I don't wanna post apocalyptic
- 16:19world. You know, funny, for a movie
- 16:21that's based on lack of resources, they sure like to
- 16:23give the gas. In the car.
- 16:25Yeah. You know, if they drive a little
- 16:27bit slower, it might last a little bit longer.
- 16:29That's. Actually, one of my complaints
- 16:31with all of them, it's such a rare resource and everybody's in
- 16:34cars all the time. Lanes coming out of cars like
- 16:38it's got Nitro just. Like revving and revving and
- 16:41revving and you're like, this is burning gas.
- 16:42Always wanna use what you don't have the right classic.
- 16:45Goose wants to use Max it seems because Max says I have to go
- 16:50and Jess is very upset about this or disappointed, maybe not
- 16:54upset and he says the goose wants me to see the new V8
- 16:58engine car. Oh, was it V8?
- 17:01Phil, you know your car is. Well he said V8 but everything
- 17:03else he said I have 0 idea. I wrote here a bunch of other
- 17:07cars shit I don't understand. The two of us, I'm the car guy
- 17:10and I'm not a car guy. That's the problem here.
- 17:14You worked at a gas station. I figured you would have had you
- 17:16know more access than I do. Yeah, I know where the gas goes.
- 17:21But anyways, speed, adrenaline, fast cars, That seems to
- 17:26interest him. A little bit, yeah.
- 17:27I think he's also disillusioned with the role itself, and the
- 17:31car just gives him a little boost for it.
- 17:33And we know this because there's some people listening to the
- 17:37conversation that are ultimately manipulating Max to stick
- 17:40around. So they get the sense that Max's
- 17:42interest is waning and they're trying to basically bribe him to
- 17:46stick around on the force. And it seems to work.
- 17:49It's the best. You can't lose the guy like
- 17:51that. It's a lot of talent,
- 17:52absolutely. But the real big piece of this
- 17:55whole scene is that the commander Fifi, it warns Max
- 18:00that he's got the Knight Rider gang, let's say on his tail.
- 18:04They're looking for him. And Max is like oh I'll just add
- 18:07it to the list, whatever. That makes sense.
- 18:08He seems like a guy that's made a few enemies but he's top of
- 18:11the box. You can handle it, no big deal.
- 18:13This gang ends up causing much problem.
- 18:16Maybe he should have taken a little bit more seriously, but
- 18:19there it is. Yeah, they do cause a little bit
- 18:21of trouble for Max and. Co But they don't worked out
- 18:25that way because the introduction of this gang on
- 18:27their motorcycles arriving at this train station is probably
- 18:33the least intimidating, least exciting, least threatening part
- 18:39of a gang scene I've ever seen in my life.
- 18:41They pull up very ordinary, organized, they park, and then
- 18:46they start to dance together, make odd movements together,
- 18:51nothing at all threatening whatsoever.
- 18:54Remind me of Batman Returns with all the like the clowns, those
- 18:57guys just coming up and jumping around the the set.
- 19:01Yeah, that's what you want. You want your mean biker gang to
- 19:06remind people of clowns and Cirque du Soleil?
- 19:10A lot of energy though. I love the other energy, Phillip
- 19:12energy. They're very animated, just
- 19:16goofing around. There for a purpose.
- 19:19Well, first of all, Phillip, they're in mourning.
- 19:21Doesn't look like they lost a good friend.
- 19:23Knight Rider Knight. They go way back.
- 19:26Like this guy's worth avenging. By the way, the guy was in.
- 19:29Yeah, but we have the introduction.
- 19:31Of Toe Cutter. Yeah, he's your big Batty,
- 19:34apparently. He plays even a bigger Batty in
- 19:38another mad. Max movie?
- 19:40Oh really? Which one?
- 19:41He was in Fury Rd. He played in Morton.
- 19:45Joe Oh, OK, Interesting. So wanted to be the same
- 19:49character. In this movie, like, ooh, yeah,
- 19:51I don't think he's come up. They could put it back together.
- 19:54They did it for Humpty Dumpty. I mean, I don't think it's that
- 19:59much of A stretch. It's in the near future.
- 20:02But no, it's a completely different character.
- 20:04I guess he just want to. Come.
- 20:05Why not come back? And yeah, exactly.
- 20:07So I thought that was a pretty interesting fact.
- 20:10But he looked like Bradley Cooper.
- 20:12I can't give you that one. I'm sorry.
- 20:13You're 1. For you're not giving me that.
- 20:15Way I think you're crazy. I disagree fully.
- 20:17You're batting 5. 105 There is one one more I have a little bit
- 20:21later, although I can't think of it right now, so that could be a
- 20:24problem. But what I liked about this
- 20:25introduction, they're by the coffin.
- 20:28He's with the old guy who led them there and he just puts his
- 20:31hands on his face. After the guy makes the comment
- 20:34he just whips over. And he says, remember him?
- 20:40I'm like, this guy's like Spock. Given this dude on mine now, I
- 20:44think what's going on? Here, that is a little like
- 20:48that. Absolutely.
- 20:49Remember, that's right. I think Gene ripped him off Ohk.
- 20:52Jesus. But there's no time to mourn
- 20:55because now they're gonna go into chase mode.
- 20:58Yes, and do what they do best. Apparently they are savages.
- 21:04That I actually liked. Everything else I was less than
- 21:08impressed by and a little bit bored by.
- 21:10But this attack of the vehicle with the makeshift weaponry,
- 21:16like the butcher knife on a pole, like this big beast of a
- 21:19knife. We have the woman who's been
- 21:22tied up across the car, barely any clothes that we've got
- 21:26Johnny the boy here, one of the hench men.
- 21:29Yeah, Johnny, seemingly what I wrote down is tripping balls.
- 21:33He's whacked out at this point. But Goose and Max, they find
- 21:37them and they basically arrest them.
- 21:40But unfortunately no one showed. Let's.
- 21:43Think Oh my God, a Fifi impression.
- 21:46It's fantastic. He's let go on a technicality.
- 21:49Goose, he's not having it. And Johnny plays him like a
- 21:54fiddle. We know who you are, we're
- 21:56coming for you, you're screwed. And it turns out Goose doesn't
- 22:00last much longer. However, before that we get a
- 22:03little disco scene and we just end up in this.
- 22:06Very strange, I suppose futuristic, but the cantina is
- 22:10more interesting than whatever is happening here.
- 22:13I thought this was again bordering on.
- 22:15Ridiculous. This is Java's Palace, my
- 22:17friend. The singer even looks someone
- 22:20that was in Java's palace. She just had a funny look to
- 22:24her, but I couldn't take my eyes off that couple in the corner.
- 22:27Just all handsy, handsy Johnny Boy up there tinkering on the
- 22:31old motorcycle. Was indeed Sabo Sabo two Star
- 22:37Trek reference OHS available in the archive Star Trek 6.
- 22:41Oddly enough, the only one, only one actually gonna remove it.
- 22:44That never happened. But what did happen right after
- 22:47this is that sequence of him riding on his bike, which was
- 22:51what Goose does best, We both know that.
- 22:54But this scene does is gives the camera guy a lot to do.
- 22:57Yeah, sure. They have 3 or 4 different
- 22:59cameras behind in front, right on the motorcycle.
- 23:03Angles. Flying down the road.
- 23:05You're probably over cranking that camera speed.
- 23:07Use your increasing the frame rate or decreasing the frame
- 23:10rate. Which they did in Fury Rd. if
- 23:12you recall. But were you impressed at all by
- 23:14this camera work, Phil? Because I know you're not in a
- 23:17movie for this. This is not your go to type.
- 23:19Of not generally. I think the camera work in this
- 23:22film is definitely the most interesting thing about it.
- 23:25It's the utilization of those angles, the camera tricks, the
- 23:28practical effects, blowing stuff up and rolling the cars and
- 23:30stuff. That is the juice in the movie.
- 23:32And the camera obviously tells that story.
- 23:35It's the tool you have. So I really like all that stuff.
- 23:38I hate the sequence though. I think it's terrible.
- 23:41I'm really frustrated by it, and it's pretty close to getting a
- 23:44little fed up with the movie. We're about halfway in at this
- 23:47juncture, and there's been so little I found compelling or
- 23:52interesting. And so when things happen, like
- 23:55what's about to happen, I think I don't care that much.
- 23:58So Goose is about to die. The goose is cooked.
- 24:04What is doubly frustrating is that he dies twice.
- 24:08Basically, from a storytelling perspective, you set up that
- 24:12Johnny has tinkered with his motorcycle, and you're like, OK,
- 24:15well, that's enough. Something's going to happen, and
- 24:17it's gonna be it's gonna cause his death.
- 24:19So we get the role. He flies 1000 feet.
- 24:22Intake, Intake. Gosh.
- 24:24Then gets up and, oh, here's a car.
- 24:26Can I borrow it? Yeah, sure.
- 24:28And then he drives, and it's another maybe minute, and Johnny
- 24:33attacks it. Now this time it rolls over and
- 24:36we have Johnny and Toe Cutter have some sort of tetet.
- 24:41Did you find this suspenseful or interesting or compelling in
- 24:44terms of who these characters are to one another?
- 24:46Or was it really just countdown to Goose's demise?
- 24:50Well, I like the fact that we thought he was going to die.
- 24:54He survived only to die in 92. Seconds like it's so fast. 9292,
- 25:02I counted it. I think that's the point of it,
- 25:05though I think it's different in that regards.
- 25:07Where most movies, Oh, you didn't die and then 20 minutes,
- 25:11thirty minutes later than the goose is cooked.
- 25:14But it kind of surprises you in that sense.
- 25:15Oh, shoot, I thought he made it. Oh, no, he does die.
- 25:18Oh, I didn't expect that to happen.
- 25:20I don't care about goose. I mean, it's how he dies.
- 25:23Reminds me of Anne Heche's friend Rachel I believe her name
- 25:28was. Yeah.
- 25:31State degree Burns buddy. 4th degree burns.
- 25:33They invented a whole new degree for this situation.
- 25:36Well, I thought it was terrible and I thought if you're going to
- 25:39wait just 92 seconds to kill him, just kill him the first
- 25:43time. I think that little bit of
- 25:44misdirection as short as it. Is we're going to agree to
- 25:47disagree, but this is it for Max at that point, he's had it, he's
- 25:51had his limit. He finally.
- 25:52Quits. I don't think he's at his limit,
- 25:54but he certainly had his limit for the job, not for life.
- 25:57But he's going to resign. Yeah, I think that's what I
- 26:00said. He's quitting.
- 26:01He's at the top, He's done. He's he's met his, he's had his
- 26:04limit. See, you're, you're saying it in
- 26:05terms of overall, but really it's just professionally.
- 26:09Yeah, he's still thriving on the personal.
- 26:10On the home front, he's looking at another career a little bit
- 26:15later once he takes a break with his lady.
- 26:17Peanut butter and honey sandwiches definitely takes the
- 26:20edge off. Gross man.
- 26:22Gross. Australian thing?
- 26:23Probably, yeah. This is a beautiful moment,
- 26:25Phil. OK, talk.
- 26:26Quiet moment. He's trying to talk to Jesse.
- 26:29You know we both know that Jessica, right?
- 26:31Fair to say, I would say yeah. So it's Jessica or Jess, but
- 26:36it's never been. Jesse No.
- 26:37What about? On your end is the same thing
- 26:39OK, Same as Rob, Robert, Robbie. Yeah, the Robbie Robertson.
- 26:44Sometimes you're just not a Robbie.
- 26:45I don't think I'm ever known to Robbie.
- 26:46No, nor should you and nor should we spend too much time on
- 26:49this scene, actually. This is Max's.
- 26:53I really struggle. Things don't share.
- 26:55No share. I really struggled to get
- 26:58through this movie The second time.
- 26:59Yeah, because it's scenes like. This watched it, Yeah, just for
- 27:02notes. Like I'm dude, I'm on my phone
- 27:04half the movie. Like I know what's happening,
- 27:06I'm making my notes, but I'm really struggling to care or be
- 27:11invested in this movie. Even the action sequences,
- 27:13because we're coming from a movie from 1979.
- 27:17I think it does great for its time.
- 27:19I'm not taking anything away from that, but this be real.
- 27:23Times have changed. We're our brains like, Oh well,
- 27:26I want more. I've seen better.
- 27:28I want. Better three, 100% about the
- 27:31story, but I argue the action in hindsight because in 1979
- 27:36Apocalypse Now came out and in 1973 or 71, The French
- 27:42Connection came out, right? These are movies that have
- 27:44action sequences that will rival anything you're going to watch
- 27:47today. So it isn't just, oh, it's an
- 27:51old movie and therefore our brains are corrupted and we
- 27:54can't watch them anymore. I think bigger issue, there's
- 27:57nothing to hang that on. French Connection is a great
- 28:00movie with some great action, chase sequences and whatever
- 28:04else. OK, like last.
- 28:05Thing yeah and Apocalypse Now is this like large scale huge event
- 28:11war movie choppers and napalm and these are action sequences
- 28:14in the grand scheme that are compelling and interesting so I
- 28:18don't think it's a product entirely of Oh well it's 1979
- 28:22they don't make action like that anymore you know you watch
- 28:24bullet in 73 and those car chases are phenomenal so it
- 28:29isn't just a product of it being an old movie as well I will
- 28:32defend. OK, well I wanna offer an
- 28:34apology. I was wrong.
- 28:37It's just too easy to throw away stuff like I didn't like.
- 28:39Not just you, I just mean in general, like old movies, they
- 28:41did things slower, they did things boring, and we needed to
- 28:44be better. I think it doesn't matter when
- 28:47it's made. A good movie can last the time
- 28:48and I just don't think that this is a good movie.
- 28:51Well, maybe that's the problem then.
- 28:52Maybe I got mixed up. I thought it was like good then,
- 28:55but it was never. Good.
- 28:56It's really popular then. I just don't know that the stuff
- 28:59around it, the question I was gonna ask you at the end
- 29:01ultimately is why do you think that this movie was so
- 29:05successful? And to your point, I am watching
- 29:08it in hindsight, right? I was just born in 79 so I don't
- 29:11know. Yeah, you were zero.
- 29:13Exactly. So maybe all of these things
- 29:16were transcendent at the time and now because they've been
- 29:20improved upon, they feel redundant.
- 29:22But I didn't see anything at least certainly now we're now
- 29:26we're in and they're doing the sojourn together.
- 29:29I don't see anything in here that says cutting edge or unique
- 29:33in any real way. Well, you know, Australia is a
- 29:36big country, some even call it a continent, right?
- 29:39So maybe just a lot of people went to the theatre.
- 29:40And you were there. Those are the two things you can
- 29:43confirm it's a big country. The telltale is that everything
- 29:48that happens now I have 0 interest in they go away.
- 29:53Max and and Jesse they do to try and clear their.
- 29:56Head And don't tell me you have no interest in ice cream, but
- 30:00come on. But just by happenstance, who's
- 30:04there? The Knight Rider gang.
- 30:06Did you feel threatened by that? Did you feel like this was gonna
- 30:09get end worse than it did in the moment?
- 30:11Absolutely. I'm worried for her.
- 30:13They are there to terrorize anyone they come across.
- 30:17Doesn't matter who. These guys are ruthless.
- 30:20But she does a good move. The need of the nuts.
- 30:22You know what that feels like. I was kicked in the balls once,
- 30:26very hard when I was in grade seven.
- 30:28It was absolutely brutal. I peed blood.
- 30:31I had to go home. It was absolutely.
- 30:34Miserable. Did you wear a jock for all the
- 30:36rest of into high school? I was.
- 30:38No, turns out I wore a chastity belt.
- 30:40You. Don't need it but there.
- 30:42Was luckily I had a hand though because I needed a hand in my
- 30:46high school days but somebody has lost a hand.
- 30:50I want to ask you about this. We watch Friday the 13th.
- 30:54You know obviously in late October we watched three of them
- 30:58and they want to show fee the 4th installment for makeup.
- 31:03Not makeup, but still sucks. Yeah, effects, but not special.
- 31:06Effects and then visual. Not like CGI effects or CGI
- 31:09special effects are practical. Yeah.
- 31:11Knives going through bodies and stuff like that.
- 31:14And when we watched Volcano a couple weeks ago, I bought into
- 31:17everything they were telling me. This is what lava does.
- 31:20This is what volcanoes do. Everything makes sense.
- 31:23And probably 50% of its bullshit.
- 31:26This. I'm like, I don't think you lose
- 31:27your hand like that. I just don't think that's how it
- 31:30happens. But maybe I'm wrong.
- 31:32Drive away. I grabbed something and it's
- 31:34gone away and I still have my hand and I still need it.
- 31:37I agree. You're not winning this battle.
- 31:39She's in a car. At some point you just go, OK,
- 31:41I'm out. I agree.
- 31:42So. I I just thought that was oddly.
- 31:44Displayed and it didn't really make any impact to the rest of
- 31:48the movie really. We want the hand back.
- 31:51I don't really want to back. I don't care.
- 31:52But you know, stupid. I just saw it was strange,
- 31:55showy, unnecessary. These effects, right?
- 31:57Just like when Goose's hand falls out of his hospital, not
- 32:02unlike not unlike Friday 4, if you recall in the morgue when
- 32:06they're fooling around in front of him and his hand falls out.
- 32:08It's exactly the same. Like oh great, great scene,
- 32:11great scene. This one was a little more
- 32:12unsettling because of the 4th degree.
- 32:15Burn and then the stuff at the farm.
- 32:17They know a guy who knows a guy and they get up to the farm and
- 32:20that's where they find their new respite and they think they're
- 32:23safe. Yes, they got a nice big Jesse
- 32:25heads down to the beach. Seems safe.
- 32:27You know, let me tell you, Australia has beautiful beaches.
- 32:29I've heard. I went into one into a beach.
- 32:32I went into the water and I don't.
- 32:34I think you know my aversion to sharks.
- 32:36Although the odds of something happening are incredibly small,
- 32:39especially if you're in an area where you're supposed to be.
- 32:41But I had goggles. I was under the water very
- 32:44often, just making sure nothing was there.
- 32:46People are just thinking I'm having a swim.
- 32:48No, I'm on safety patrol. I'm on safety patrol for
- 32:51everybody. Else.
- 32:53I didn't even say it, but I was keeping everybody.
- 32:55Safe. You're the Chief Brody.
- 32:57By going under the Chief Brody on the kid.
- 32:59You have a 66 shooter with some poison tip bullets.
- 33:02I didn't make the mistake of yelling something out though.
- 33:05But you see shadows in the water and it's just shadows of other
- 33:07swimmers. But it feels like that is that
- 33:10is that absolutely. But it was a big step for me to
- 33:13be in an ocean front, to be honest.
- 33:14With you had to travel around the world to do it, you've got
- 33:17water everywhere around you with no shark possibility whatsoever.
- 33:20I love salt. Salt.
- 33:22You know that? You look at me, I'm bloated, and
- 33:24this movie is pretty bloated. Phillip.
- 33:26The only thing I liked about this sort of sequence is we got
- 33:28to see Sloth from Google. Really.
- 33:31OHS. This guy, sure.
- 33:35The farm #3 by the way, I don't know you with me on that one.
- 33:40Yeah, I just watched The Goonies a couple days ago.
- 33:42Actually, you were thinking it was the same.
- 33:43I thought you were gonna pull it out.
- 33:44I was like, I will tell you, this is actually the second
- 33:47scene of the movie that I love. Wonderful.
- 33:50Could chase through the woods, I think is incredibly effective,
- 33:54very well shot, well staged and I didn't think it lasted too
- 33:58long. I thought it was really tight
- 34:00and genuinely scary in terms of pacing, cutting, shooting and
- 34:05staging and the direction of that whole sequence, I thought.
- 34:08Was very, very effective. Interesting.
- 34:10I didn't get that. I I'm thinking to myself, I
- 34:14think the Friday movies or just scary movies in general do a
- 34:18better job of it. And I thought you may have
- 34:20compared it to that and say, well, it's OK, but this is more
- 34:24about the cars and stuff. Let's leave this kind of work to
- 34:27Friday the. 13th No, I actually think it's the opposite.
- 34:30I think because the Friday movies are so based on that and
- 34:35it's such a part of that entire series.
- 34:38I don't think they drag it out very long and I don't think that
- 34:41they play the cat and mouse sweat so much.
- 34:43It's mostly them wandering around.
- 34:45Cut to then they get hacked, right?
- 34:48And because they're replayed a number of times throughout the
- 34:50story, throughout the movies, I think they kind of lose their
- 34:53power. What I found interesting about
- 34:54this one was that it is so incongruous to what came before.
- 34:58And in all the ways that I haven't felt the threat of this
- 35:02group of people. I felt that dread and I thought
- 35:05very, very compelling. I assume it's because of the
- 35:07dead dog, similar to Friday part.
- 35:09I didn't think about that, but yeah, there's there's another
- 35:11dead dog in here. Yeah, you're right.
- 35:12It's been awhile since I've offered up some connective
- 35:14tissue, buddy. There you go on the House.
- 35:17That's part of the Dead Dog trilogy that will go off the
- 35:19shelf is undertaking. Yeah, we can package well.
- 35:22Halloween. There's a dead dog in Halloween
- 35:24as well, so. And we have four brothers.
- 35:27No, I guess the dog didn't die. I was just shot at.
- 35:29But we have wonder. Boys got a dead dog too.
- 35:31Yeah, sad we got. Options, buddy.
- 35:33And after that she needs to calm down and the old lady, we don't
- 35:38really care about her name, but she's got some leg braces and
- 35:40that's not important either. But Jesse realizes that she has
- 35:44a kid and thought maybe she should go check on it and see
- 35:51where Sprog is. And Sprague's not where Sprog is
- 35:53supposed to be. Were you expecting to see the
- 35:56gang here? I guess that's really where this
- 35:59movie is going. To present the whole chase
- 36:01sequence is with the gang. So yeah, they probably took the
- 36:04baby, which, yeah, that isn't A twist.
- 36:06It's kind of exactly what would happen.
- 36:08But luckily the lady with the leg braces comes back and
- 36:12essentially very temporarily saves the day.
- 36:15I hate this scene. I mean, I'm talking 90 seconds
- 36:18later. And it's really frustrating that
- 36:20their answer to 9 motorcycles racing down the highway is 1
- 36:26shotgun and a 92 year old woman and why running in the middle of
- 36:31the road is the answer. I do enjoy the last shot of the
- 36:36sequence where the baby's shoe and hat or something are the
- 36:42only things visible garments on the street so you know exactly
- 36:47what happened. I would have liked a little more
- 36:48blood, guts and gore, as you know.
- 36:49I'm happy that we can finally tech mark that we watched the
- 36:53movie where they killed a baby. They didn't kill the old lady
- 36:56though. That would have been a 2 for
- 36:58would. Have enjoyed that.
- 36:59Yeah, you're right. So.
- 37:00Sorry to hear buddy, but they just killed his wife and child
- 37:03instead. Hopefully that's enough for you.
- 37:07Max doesn't take it too. Well, no.
- 37:08He's been standing like a zombie outside the door.
- 37:11Yeah, I don't think they realized he was in earshot.
- 37:13Yeah, she's dead, but tell him she's still alive, not dead.
- 37:16They started her vitals. They found the vitals.
- 37:18She'll live. I got the impression she was
- 37:20brain. Dead.
- 37:21She is brain dead I'm sure, but she's still alive.
- 37:24I don't think she's in Road Warrior.
- 37:27That's fair enough. She makes it.
- 37:29That relationship is not going to last.
- 37:31She definitely looked like. She was missing.
- 37:32Somebody parts underneath that sheep.
- 37:34Yes, you're. Right.
- 37:35Definitely missing an arm. And I need a woman with two
- 37:37arms. Call me particular, but I'm just
- 37:40kidding. I actually you're not me to say.
- 37:43I would happily, in the right situation, data one armed woman,
- 37:46as long as she didn't. Try to murder you for pro vasic?
- 37:50Exactly. That's what I was getting at.
- 37:51Try to get the fugitive in there.
- 37:53Somehow you find this woman. They're dead, let's be clear
- 38:07about that. He gets the leather pants on and
- 38:09he's out for the scene. I haven't really felt too much
- 38:13of the doom and gloom, the dread.
- 38:15I haven't really felt a lot of the post apocalyptic stuff
- 38:18either. It looks like Australia doesn't
- 38:19really special. I've been there, you know.
- 38:21And so now they give him the hero shot.
- 38:25He's got a shotgun in one hand. This is the look we get, Meld in
- 38:29his full regalia and what little bit I do know of the character
- 38:34through history, it's this look, it's this image that stands out.
- 38:38So I was happy to see it. I was very surprised, like
- 38:41everything else in the movie, that it took so damn long to
- 38:44really get there. But I do think that the look of
- 38:46that character in that moment is captivating and is something
- 38:51that you can get, I don't want to say amped up for, but
- 38:53definitely get hooked, OK? Good.
- 38:56I did like that scene as well. This is Max that we've been
- 38:59waiting for. Now that he's all geared up,
- 39:01that gets into the car, which actually looks like Knight
- 39:04Rider. The car, it's all black.
- 39:06It doesn't talk unfortunately. Maybe in the sequel?
- 39:08Maybe, perhaps I've seen it, but he is on the prowl.
- 39:12He is chasing motorcycles. The first set is just a bunch of
- 39:16randos that we don't care about and they just get knocked off a
- 39:20bridge. No big deal.
- 39:21Get the ball rolling. Absolutely.
- 39:24I do like this sequence Phillip, but I don't like what happens.
- 39:27Next tell me. Two things, if you'll bear with
- 39:29me. I'll make it quick here in chase
- 39:32movies generally when you can catch up to a car but you all of
- 39:37a sudden can't overtake the. Car.
- 39:40That doesn't math. So you're going 80, I'm going
- 39:43100 and then once I catch up to you, I can't go 100 anymore.
- 39:46Like I have to go down to 80. Like you go right behind them.
- 39:49So weird thing for me and maybe I'm just over analyzing it.
- 39:52Maybe the car? Guy.
- 39:54But yeah, only a car guy. I mean, that's a nitpick.
- 39:58That's a nitpick. What bothered me more was that
- 40:01Max fell for this obvious ambush situation.
- 40:05I agree with you wholeheartedly. It feels to me like the
- 40:09character they're setting up from the beginning.
- 40:12Mad Max is the baddest guy, The bees knees if you will.
- 40:16He wouldn't fall for this and he falls for it easily and he gets
- 40:20taken care of quickly. What happens to him?
- 40:22David, tell me. I think he gets shot in the leg.
- 40:25Let me just pull it up. Let me put the tape in.
- 40:27Yeah, he gets shot. In the leg and they run over his
- 40:30arm too so I just thought like you're introducing this guy
- 40:33you've got the hero thing here's the vengeance moment and the
- 40:36first thing that happens he falls for the easiest thing in
- 40:39the book I'm just thinking who is this guy it's.
- 40:42Ben Affleck from Armageddon shot in the leg.
- 40:47Right there in the archive. So it's really bothersome to me
- 40:49that this is this guy. I've yet to see any reason why
- 40:53this guy is considered to be the guy.
- 40:56I didn't mind the almost symmetry in a weird way of him
- 41:01getting run over with his arm. And I'm thinking, OK, well, this
- 41:04will be a problem throughout the whole series.
- 41:06And then I thought, wait a minute, that happened in.
- 41:08Not necessarily the same thing, but Furiosa, the character in
- 41:11Fury Rd. She's missing an arm.
- 41:13I connected something else but I didn't.
- 41:15Know you have another thing Bruin?
- 41:17You tell me. Well, I'm thinking the whole
- 41:19movie like what makes this like Fury Rd.
- 41:22There's got to be that's our framework.
- 41:23Actually, I don't know if I'm looking for it.
- 41:25And it's a very small scene just before this actually, where
- 41:28they're hijacking a gas truck essentially.
- 41:32And the reason like these long? Pulling it almost.
- 41:34Right. I'm like that's, that's, that's
- 41:37it. Like 10 seconds.
- 41:40So like, there it is. I have one asterisk.
- 41:42It's the snicker notified. The second last note I have on
- 41:45the movie is this is familiar. This resonates.
- 41:48Yeah, exactly. It's not.
- 41:50Even close to what you see in Fury Rd. but there's something
- 41:54there that's like, OK, this is the beginning of what we're
- 41:57going to see 40 years from now. Like there's those two dots that
- 42:00you can connect these two movies.
- 42:02I just love how it worked out that way.
- 42:04Beautiful that the scenes. Agree the same thing, but then
- 42:07thought, wow, it took an hour and 25 minutes to get a scene.
- 42:11It doesn't have to echo, right? I'm not looking for connective
- 42:14tissue necessarily, but rather just that shows me that there's
- 42:19more to what's happening in the world than just these Rd. races.
- 42:22Because the fuel, they only mention it once, but there's a
- 42:25lot of gas around this entire movie, right?
- 42:28Goose is burned up in gas. You know, there's like a lot of
- 42:30free gas around. So there's tankers that are
- 42:32blowing up full of it, right? Like it just doesn't feel as
- 42:35scarce. But when they're hijacking like
- 42:37OK. Let's keep in mind though, this
- 42:39movie, it's this is just the beginning of the shortage.
- 42:42I wonder if they knew. I mean, obviously you can never
- 42:45know it's going to be as successful as it is.
- 42:47But I wonder if they had an inkling of here's the story I
- 42:50want to tell. And maybe they had an idea of
- 42:521-2 and three. They had the World Vision, let's
- 42:55say. Or if it was a product of this
- 42:58is a big hit, I guess we'll just make another one, right?
- 43:00Like, is it we made money? Yeah, we have.
- 43:02So I wonder if there was more creativity behind that.
- 43:05And like, I've built the world. It's like Star Wars, right?
- 43:07Like Lucas has always said, I have this big vision, but if I
- 43:11can't make a movie after Star Wars, it's useless.
- 43:14So I make Star Wars to be as good as it can be.
- 43:17It's a standalone, it lives and dies and then, oh wait, now
- 43:20because it made so much money, I can do the thing I always wanted
- 43:22to do. So I wonder if George Miller had
- 43:23something similar in this one. Well, we can ask him.
- 43:26He might be 80. He's a little hard of hearing,
- 43:29but if you yell loud. Enough.
- 43:31You'll hear you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:33We're in the home stretch of the movie, David.
- 43:34It's the last few minutes here. How do you think the movie
- 43:38resolves itself? We've got Bubba, Johnny the Boy
- 43:42and Toe Cutter still on the loose.
- 43:46Yeah, he's got a Max, has got his leg all jacked out and his
- 43:50arm broken, presumably. So how do you think the movie
- 43:54resolves itself in the last 10 or 15?
- 43:55I like the look of Baba Baba the whole movie.
- 43:58Like he looked like a bit of a bad ass.
- 44:01I almost thought he was the leader at the very beginning.
- 44:03Like no, no, it's clearly Toe Cutter this guy.
- 44:05Is William T Riker of the situation here?
- 44:09But he didn't have anything to say, didn't have much to do.
- 44:13So I guess it suits the movie that he just dies pretty easily.
- 44:17I guess next we have Toe Cutter. Actually, you would think he
- 44:22would been the final boss that died, but no.
- 44:24Yeah, I thought that too. He's the next one and this is
- 44:28the good old fashioned car chase and he gets annihilated.
- 44:32Ironically had every part of his body cut off but his toe.
- 44:36That was all that was left actually after he got hit by the
- 44:39truck. I went to seek that joke in.
- 44:41Totally worth it I'm sure for anyone that stuck around.
- 44:45The eyes coming out of the head, I thought, what am I watching
- 44:49here? This is a.
- 44:50It's almost comical because like a cartoon.
- 44:52Showy, same as the hand, but I mean I love that he's like
- 44:55racked like he's in like. He's not coming back.
- 44:58Like the actors coming back later but the character ain't
- 45:01coming back? Shut that down.
- 45:03But then we get Johnny. The boy?
- 45:04Yeah, he's been your boy. You liked him all along.
- 45:07You said nothing but great things about Johnny.
- 45:08Strikes me odd that he would be the big bad ultimately because
- 45:13yeah, he's trapped underneath the car.
- 45:16Well, he is now once he can't cuss him there.
- 45:19Yeah, he wasn't caught there, naturally.
- 45:21Handcuffs. You know, you could cut the
- 45:23handcuffs off in 10 minutes. If you're lucky, you can cut
- 45:27your ankle off in 5 minutes. There's a leaking gasket and
- 45:32there's a match a Zippo lighter ready to go and Max just walks
- 45:36away. Doesn't even want to watch him
- 45:38die. I feel like I would want to
- 45:40watch him die. Listen, he's seen it with Goose.
- 45:42He knows what it looks like. He doesn't need to see it again.
- 45:45There's no surprises here. Did you notice though the 5
- 45:49minutes is not accurate? Had about maybe one minute maybe
- 45:53and I'm generally. Good part.
- 45:54Because if you're Johnny and you're like, maybe I'll do it,
- 45:57I'm going to try in a minute and a half, you're like, Oh yeah,
- 46:00that's perfect. That's how you fuck with
- 46:01somebody's brain. I like it.
- 46:03I'm a sicko. Sicky, I don't think you're
- 46:05getting through that bone in 5 minutes either though.
- 46:08So like, I don't know, have you ever tried saw through bone?
- 46:11Not your own, but somebody else's?
- 46:12No. OK.
- 46:14I don't think he even knew that he was the one responsible for
- 46:18burning goose. And I right, you know, somebody
- 46:22did it, so I guess he doesn't really care.
- 46:24But yeah, it feels like the whole movie would be building up
- 46:27the toe cutter because it's toe cutter that pushes Johnny to
- 46:30burn goose. And so the fact that it ends
- 46:32with Johnny doesn't really serve the dramatic purpose I think the
- 46:35movie wants it to. At least from my viewing.
- 46:36It doesn't really give me any sense of satisfaction,
- 46:40especially since John kind of did it by accident, like Totters
- 46:43pushing him at the time and the match drops.
- 46:45Like none of it is intentional. It's a strange situation we find
- 46:50ourselves in where I watch this and I don't think I could care
- 46:52any less about what happened in this movie.
- 46:55And if I have any inkling whatsoever, any passion or any
- 47:00desire, it is only to watch the next one to see if the character
- 47:05that I think I know exists. Because based on this movie, I
- 47:09see nothing that traces and connects not only to no
- 47:14character, but there is no character in Fury Rd. either.
- 47:16So I'm not like, Oh well, the character pieces later.
- 47:20It doesn't matter to me necessarily.
- 47:22But this movie I. Got.
- 47:24It's so little to get me excited about the world that they're
- 47:28building that I'm surprised that made as much money as it did,
- 47:32and I'm surprised that a sequel was desired on some level.
- 47:36But my gosh, I thought this was drab, boring, trying at times,
- 47:41and I didn't feel any of the excitement that I would imagine
- 47:43from a Mad Max movie. As I've come to understand it.
- 47:46David, you own it already. How are you feeling about it
- 47:49after a couple of watches now in a couple of years?
- 47:52I think what we have here, Phil, is a rare case in which not just
- 47:57one, but multiple sequels are better than the original.
- 48:01OK. Which makes me believe that this
- 48:03movie is indeed what I like to call a table setter.
- 48:07OK, similar to a movie like Unbreakable, although I enjoyed
- 48:11Unbreakable much more. But it took a long time for
- 48:15Bruce's character to become that superhero.
- 48:19It's not until the last 20 minutes that's a slow burn with
- 48:23a amazing finale in Unbreakable. Not this, that's that's clear.
- 48:28This ending didn't save the movie for me.
- 48:32I feel sometimes directors are too focused on the camera work,
- 48:37the stunts. Like you can tell that this
- 48:40movie is about those chases and they're done well, generally
- 48:43speaking, but it leaves a big hole in the rest of the movie.
- 48:47And if you don't fill that out with something.
- 48:49And the beauty with Fury Rd. is it's just constant.
- 48:52There's no time to think like I'm just getting dopamine hit
- 48:55after dopamine hit. This movie, I'm bored as you
- 48:58know, like I am bored. Yes, movie.
- 49:01I mean I think I sort of enjoyed it the first time but wasn't
- 49:04sure. I guess it was all new, like
- 49:06yourself didn't realize he was a cop and like OK, this could be
- 49:09cool. It's 1979, it's Australia now.
- 49:12Watching it two more times in like this is not keeping my
- 49:16attention and I don't think it's my fault.
- 49:19However, I know there's more to come.
- 49:22I've looked at IMDb, I know the sequel is better.
- 49:25I know people like Road Warrior and that's the saving grace.
- 49:29Will get back to it, give it another shot.
- 49:31Not next week. We'll let it breathe for a
- 49:33little bit, and maybe in a month or so we'll visit Road Warrior.
- 49:37And of course by then we'll have to do Thunderdome because you
- 49:39can't just not do the third one. Though I've done weird stuff
- 49:42like that. That's where I subtle.
- 49:44I mean, I don't think I'll watch this movie.
- 49:47I do want to say though, I do have a hankering for Furioso.
- 49:51That Furiosa. Because I'm thinking, well, it
- 49:53was kind of slow, but it wasn't this slow.
- 49:56So now it might look better because, you know, the CGI,
- 49:59though you say it was rushed. We disagreed a little bit.
- 50:02There you have Chris Hemsworth. Really grandiose, right?
- 50:06What this movie doesn't do at all is a performance.
- 50:10I guess that's true. Fury Rd. has got the action and
- 50:12Furiosa has the charisma of Hemsworth.
- 50:16I think that kind of goes a long way.
- 50:17But yeah, this has neither. Now, I'll tell you who does have
- 50:21charisma, David, and that's you. That was the original name for
- 50:23this podcast. It was going to be action and
- 50:24charisma. I was going to be action.
- 50:26You were charisma. But we changed the name.
- 50:29And thanks for listening, folks. We do appreciate it.
