• 0:07
Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's up, Everybody, This is
• 0:24
Speaker 1: Peter Schreger. This is the Season with Peter Schrager. We
• 0:27
Speaker 1: were entering Week seven of the NFL season, and I
• 0:31
Speaker 1: gotta tell you, Aaron, this was the most surprising of
• 0:34
Speaker 1: weeks we've had this year. But it's just it's true
• 0:37
Speaker 1: to form. This is the NFL any given Sunday. But
• 0:39
Speaker 1: you saw the forty nine ers, who were unbeatable and
• 0:42
Speaker 1: averaging a margin of victory of twenty points, lose in
• 0:46
Speaker 1: Cleveland to a backup quarterback without Nick Chubb and without
• 0:49
Speaker 1: Joel Patonio. You saw Jalen Hurts strut into met Life,
• 0:53
Speaker 1: take an early lead and then throw three uncharacteristic interceptions
• 0:56
Speaker 1: and lose to the Jets. And then you saw the
• 0:59
Speaker 1: Detroit Lions go into Tampa, a team that everyone was
• 1:03
Speaker 1: high on, and just absolutely whooped them and beat them
• 1:05
Speaker 1: twenty to with Aman Rossing Brown having a career day
• 1:09
Speaker 1: and those creamsicle uniforms just being splattered across that home field.
• 1:15
Speaker 1: Fun fun week to get some unexpected results. We go
• 1:18
Speaker 1: on to Week seven, but I wanted to start the
• 1:21
Speaker 1: pod this week with a personal note, Aaron, are you
• 1:25
Speaker 1: ready for me to reveal why I was away for
• 1:28
Speaker 1: a couple of days in late August filming something in
• 1:32
  Speaker 1: Los Angeles.
• 1:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to pay this off. This has been
• 1:35
Speaker 2: a long time coming. This is a secret and we're
• 1:38
Speaker 2: now getting the reveal.
• 1:40
Speaker 1: So I get a call around August fifteenth from a
• 1:47
Speaker 1: production company saying, is there any way you can get
• 1:52
Speaker 1: off of Good Morning Football a week from now on
• 1:55
Speaker 1: the Monday, last week of August, to which I said,
• 2:01
Speaker 1: I'd need to know what the opportunity is. The answers
• 2:04
Speaker 1: probably No Morning Football does really good ratings in August,
• 2:08
Speaker 1: and the NFL network puts a lot of eggs in
• 2:10
Speaker 1: the August basket because we're the only ones to show
• 2:13
Speaker 1: all the preseason games. Ratings are high. So if it's
• 2:16
Speaker 1: to you know, do a spot on a reality show
• 2:21
Speaker 1: or gosh, if Gordon Ramsey wanted me to be a
• 2:24
Speaker 1: guest judge on Kitchen Nightmares, the entest probably know. But
• 2:28
Speaker 1: this one was special. The production company was representing a
• 2:33
Speaker 1: certain show called Jeopardy. Aaron, no response. I'm waiting for nothing.
• 2:42
  Speaker 2: I'm waiting.
• 2:44
  Speaker 1: Details.
• 2:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay, So they represent Jeopardy, and there.
• 2:48
Speaker 1: Was a writers strike going on, and there was an
• 2:51
Speaker 1: actor strike going on. I think the term Celebrity Jeopardy
• 2:56
Speaker 1: was being tossed around very loosely at this time in
• 2:58
Speaker 1: Hollywood's They asked me if I wanted to come on
• 3:02
Speaker 1: Celebrity Jeopardy and compete as a contestant on Celebrity Jeopardy.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: Aaron my lovely producer and friend. We've known each other
• 3:11
Speaker 1: now about a year, maybe a little bit more than
• 3:13
Speaker 1: a year. I grew up a Jeopardy kid.
• 3:16
Speaker 2: That makes total sense to me. No, no, you Your
• 3:21
Speaker 2: ability to recall facts and numbers and names is uncanny,
• 3:26
Speaker 2: and this feels like exactly the kind of thing that
• 3:30
Speaker 2: you like. I don't know if you did trivial pursuit
• 3:33
Speaker 2: as a kid, but I have a feeling like you
• 3:35
Speaker 2: were in this from the beginning, and Jeopardy is like
• 3:38
Speaker 2: one hundred percent makes sense.
• 3:39
  Speaker 3: I get it.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: There was a TV in my kitchen as a kid,
• 3:44
Speaker 1: and we would sit down for dinner at seven pm
• 3:48
Speaker 1: every night in Freehold, New Jersey. The TV was about
• 3:50
Speaker 1: the size of your laptop, and we'd sit at a table.
• 3:54
Speaker 1: There'd be a little counter and then the TV was
• 3:57
Speaker 1: on and my family family four. Wasn't much discussion about
• 4:01
Speaker 1: our feelings. Wasn't much discussion about how our vulnerabilities are
• 4:06
Speaker 1: and our failures and our strengths. It was more just
• 4:09
Speaker 1: be quiet, let's listen to Drabek and then if dinner
• 4:12
Speaker 1: goes on long enough, we might get a little wheel also.
• 4:14
Speaker 1: I mean that's basically what it was. Every night, seven pm,
• 4:18
Speaker 1: Trebec Jeopardy Old school, and then my brother and I
• 4:23
Speaker 1: would would retire from the kitchen and we would go retire.
• 4:26
Speaker 1: We'd go to something called the computer room, which kids
• 4:28
Speaker 1: these days don't even know what that is, but it
• 4:30
Speaker 1: was the room where there was a computer. And we
• 4:32
Speaker 1: had a Commodore sixty four and eventually I think in
• 4:36
Speaker 1: Apple pe or was Apple two? E? Is that what
• 4:39
Speaker 1: it was? I have? Yeah, I'm sorry, east ms Okay.
• 4:43
Speaker 1: The Commodore sixty four was an old computer. Then we
• 4:45
Speaker 1: graduated to the Apple two, and then eventually we got
• 4:48
Speaker 1: a Dell and if you know what Dell is, it
• 4:50
Speaker 1: was like I got a Dell dude, like the Dell guy,
• 4:52
Speaker 1: and we would play Jeopardy on the computer. Like I
• 4:55
Speaker 1: didn't play Mario. I didn't play Tetris. We played Jeopardy
• 4:59
Speaker 1: and it was like a pixelated version of Jeopardy on
• 5:01
Speaker 1: a floppy disc and it was all sorts of characters.
• 5:04
Speaker 1: And then they would eventually come out with Sports jepard
• 5:07
Speaker 1: and I would play Sports Jeopardy. So when I get
• 5:10
Speaker 1: the call to compete on Jeopardy, not only do I
• 5:14
Speaker 1: not ask my employers out of the gates, I just
• 5:16
Speaker 1: say yes. And I'm like, well, who wants the book
• 5:17
Speaker 1: to flight? Like I'm going I'll lose my job, Like
• 5:19
  Speaker 1: I don't, I'm going like I'm doing this. Fortunately I
• 5:22
Speaker 1: did ask our employers. They were cool enough to let
• 5:25
Speaker 1: me miss a show. I think I got that vacation
• 5:27
Speaker 1: day docked on the back end, But that's another conversation.
• 5:30
Speaker 1: We'll talk about that at some other date. That said
• 5:33
  Speaker 1: I was in but I was told I couldn't say
• 5:35
Speaker 1: a word. So here I am, and there's so many
• 5:38
Speaker 1: things I have to go through, but I with no
• 5:41
Speaker 1: further do. I will tell you the air date when
• 5:44
Speaker 1: it is airing is next Wednesday, October twenty fifth, my
• 5:51
Speaker 1: episode of Celebrity Jeopardy where I am a contestant, and
• 5:56
Speaker 1: it will air at I believe eight o'clock Eastern, not
• 6:00
Speaker 1: even that seven o'clock garbage that we usually see it on.
• 6:02
Speaker 1: This is primetime, baby, and it's celebrity Jeopardy. I'm loud
• 6:06
Speaker 1: to tell you who I went against, and I'll tell
• 6:09
Speaker 1: you the story of how I've found out who these
• 6:11
Speaker 1: people were. So they don't tell you who you're against.
• 6:14
Speaker 1: You show up. Now. Let me ask you if you
• 6:17
Speaker 1: fly in on a Sunday for a Monday filming of
• 6:20
Speaker 1: Jeopardy and you found out a couple of days earlier,
• 6:23
Speaker 1: you'd probably want to prepare somehow, right, right, right, So Aaron,
• 6:28
Speaker 1: I ask you, if you were told in eight days
• 6:29
Speaker 1: you're going on Jeopardy, how would you prepare? I had
• 6:35
  Speaker 1: no idea.
• 6:35
  Speaker 2: I don't know how I would prepare if I was
• 6:37
Speaker 2: told in a year you're going on Jeopardy.
• 6:39
Speaker 1: There's no way to prepare for Jeopardy. You either know
• 6:41
Speaker 1: this stuff or not. And a lot of it's like,
• 6:43
Speaker 1: you know, we's say white men can't jump, like words
• 6:45
Speaker 1: that start with the letter Q. Like, it's a lot
• 6:48
Speaker 1: of it is puns and a lot of it is homonyms.
• 6:51
Speaker 1: So here's my thing. I'm like, I'm gonna fly out.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: I'm on delta. They've got wi Fi. I am gonna
• 6:58
Speaker 1: just take a look at the main thing. State capitals,
• 7:02
Speaker 1: smart geometry, like hexagon, rahmbus, I'm getting down octagon, US presidents.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: I'm pretty good on them. But then when I looked
• 7:12
Speaker 1: at the Wikipedia page, I was not good on them.
• 7:14
Speaker 1: I'm like, they better not anything from the year seventeen
• 7:18
Speaker 1: eighty to nineteen ninety. Like I thought I had it.
• 7:21
  Speaker 4: I didn't.
• 7:22
  Speaker 1: I didn't know about Fillmore's thing, and I didn't want
• 7:24
Speaker 1: to go into it. Then I was like, okay, world history,
• 7:28
Speaker 1: world capitals, Olympic cities, like these are the things that like,
• 7:31
  Speaker 1: I'm a little so.
• 7:33
Speaker 2: So just to be clear, on your flight to LA,
• 7:36
Speaker 2: you study geometry, state capitals, presidents, world history. This is
• 7:43
Speaker 2: a large list of things.
• 7:45
Speaker 1: All right. I have a photographic memory. I could see
• 7:48
Speaker 1: something and never forget it. So I'm like, if I
• 7:50
Speaker 1: just look at these things, I'll just have it in
• 7:53
Speaker 1: the back of my head, and you know, one of
• 7:55
Speaker 1: them will come up. I can tell you, rest assured,
• 7:58
Speaker 1: none of them. Seven hours seven hours on a flight.
• 8:02
Speaker 1: It's like Scott Hanson some hours studying everything. All right,
• 8:07
Speaker 1: So let me finish, let me get to the next thing.
• 8:09
Speaker 1: So I'm studying. I'm nervous, but then I'm like bored,
• 8:13
Speaker 1: Like I'm on the flight and I'm like, so I
• 8:15
Speaker 1: think I watched Like I think I watched like remember
• 8:18
Speaker 1: the Fableman's Instead was that.
• 8:19
Speaker 4: What it was called?
• 8:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, I liked it, But like I gave up really
• 8:25
Speaker 1: quickly in the studying. I was like ancient egypt facts
• 8:28
Speaker 1: fell asleep, literally fell asleep. I'm like, I'm screwed. I
• 8:30
  Speaker 1: can't just like study the world. I don't know, I
• 8:33
Speaker 1: can't do it. I land and they put me up
• 8:36
Speaker 1: in a hotel in an area of LA called Culver City.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: Culver City's where the NFL network used to be. I
• 8:42
Speaker 1: don't know anything about it, but I'm like, all right,
• 8:44
  Speaker 1: I see there's a Roberto's Pizza there. They have one
• 8:46
Speaker 1: of those in Brooklyn. I'm like, all right, I'll go
• 8:47
Speaker 1: there for dinner. I get to Culver City and it's
• 8:51
Speaker 1: the only time it's ever rained in the history of LA.
• 8:53
Speaker 1: I think it's pouring rain, and then they're freaking out
• 8:56
Speaker 1: that there's gonna be a hurricane. So now I've got
• 8:59
Speaker 1: the stress of all right, I'm in a hurricane in
• 9:01
Speaker 1: La which you know, They're the kind of city where
• 9:03
Speaker 1: there's like a newscaster out there when it drizzles, and
• 9:05
Speaker 1: it's like, what, the city's shut down, so everyone's freaking out.
• 9:08
Speaker 1: I get to the hotel room and I again, I'm like,
• 9:13
Speaker 1: do I study? Then there's three season football on. I'm like,
• 9:17
Speaker 1: I want to look up Cumulus and Mbius or whatever
• 9:19
Speaker 1: that is, you know. And all of a sudden, an
• 9:22
Speaker 1: alarm clock that's next to the hotel room starts shaking
• 9:27
Speaker 1: and falls off the nightstand, Like what the hell? And
• 9:32
Speaker 1: then I see the TV's shit earthquake, a freaking earthquake.
• 9:40
Speaker 1: I'm like, a hurricane and an earthquake the Sunday that
• 9:44
Speaker 1: I arrive in La to do Celebrity Jeopardy the following day.
• 9:49
Speaker 1: You can't make this stuff up. I decide to uh
• 9:54
Speaker 1: just you know, just buckle down, go to sleep. And
• 9:56
Speaker 1: then they're like, all right, your call time is two pm.
• 9:59
Speaker 1: Call time for those of you in the uh not
• 10:02
Speaker 1: in the entertainment business like me. I mean that's when
• 10:04
Speaker 1: you've got to show up two pm. So I have
• 10:07
Speaker 1: all I'm on East Coast time. I wake up at
• 10:09
Speaker 1: like four point thirty wired coffee, Let's go sonny as
• 10:12
Speaker 1: could be. I walked to some place like a long walk,
• 10:15
Speaker 1: have breakfast. It was delicious, walk back and I'm like
• 10:18
Speaker 1: just studying on my phone, like Wikipedia facts and looking
• 10:21
Speaker 1: at like world leaders and facts about Bonaparte, and then
• 10:25
Speaker 1: like World War two battles, like I'm doing it. I'm trying.
• 10:28
Speaker 1: All this stuff was irrelevant. I then am like, all right,
• 10:34
Speaker 1: thinking about it NonStop, nervous. I get to the Sony
• 10:39
Speaker 1: lot where they're filming Jeopardy.
• 10:42
Speaker 2: Still don't know who you're against?
• 10:43
Speaker 1: No, okay, and I walk in and they're filming the
• 10:46
Speaker 1: episode before me. Okay, and I'm watching it from like
• 10:51
Speaker 1: a small TV and the episode before me was, huh,
• 10:57
Speaker 1: who was it? It was? I think I can give
• 10:59
Speaker 1: it away. I don't know if it's released. Yeah, okay.
• 11:02
Speaker 1: Brian Baumgartner from the Office who played Kevin, you know,
• 11:05
Speaker 1: spilling the chili Kevin, who's a Packers fan. We should
• 11:08
Speaker 1: have him on the podcast. He's good. You might need
• 11:11
Speaker 1: to google this. Abbott Elementary Lisa Ann Walter, who was
• 11:17
Speaker 1: very nice. And then the third was I want to
• 11:21
Speaker 1: say Jonah from Deep Timothy Simon's yep, tall guy, funny
• 11:26
Speaker 1: as hell. That's the trio before me, and I'm watching
• 11:30
Speaker 1: their match, and as I'm watching it, they're like, all right,
• 11:33
Speaker 1: we're gonna take you to your trailer. I've never been
• 11:36
Speaker 1: in a trailer before. Celebrity here. Hello. Meanwhile, I think
• 11:40
Speaker 1: last year nothing against those actors or me, but like
• 11:43
Speaker 1: last year was like Martin Short versus Jimmy Kimble versus
• 11:45
Speaker 1: Meryl Streep, and now it's like me, good morning football
• 11:50
Speaker 1: host Peter Sugar on a cable. I'm not knocking it.
• 11:53
Speaker 1: I was very flattered and I'm honored to be there again.
• 11:56
Speaker 1: Writers strike, acting strike me. I pop into my trailer
• 12:01
Speaker 1: and they've got a thermis that says Celebrity Jeopardy. I'm like,
• 12:04
Speaker 1: can I keep this? They're like yes. I'm like, hell yeah.
• 12:07
Speaker 1: They've got a T shirt that says Celebrity Jeopardy. I'm like,
• 12:09
Speaker 1: can I keep this? They're like yeah. And then they
• 12:11
Speaker 1: had like all these snacks. I did damage before I
• 12:16
Speaker 1: went on Jeopardy. I was so nervous. I think I
• 12:17
Speaker 1: had an entire cheese plate. I think they had proscrudo,
• 12:21
Speaker 1: they had capacola, they had some gba ghoul I ate
• 12:24
Speaker 1: it all. I had a full meat and cheese plate
• 12:28
Speaker 1: before I even stepped on to that thing. And then
• 12:29
Speaker 1: they're like, all right, put on a suit. I put
• 12:32
Speaker 1: on a suit. I'm ready, and they're like, all right,
• 12:34
Speaker 1: we want to take you to makeup. Get to makeup.
• 12:38
Speaker 1: Really good looking guy is waiting for their makeup and
• 12:41
  Speaker 1: he's not in a suit. He's in like a cool
• 12:43
Speaker 1: like satin jacket with like his muscles out, and I'm like,
• 12:47
Speaker 1: who's this guy. They're like, meet Adam Rodriguez. He's he
• 12:51
Speaker 1: was from CSI Miami. He's also in the Magic Mic films.
• 12:55
Speaker 1: And now I want to say he's in Criminal Minds.
• 12:57
Speaker 1: You might need to do a little resume search for me,
• 12:58
Speaker 1: a little Wikipedia, if you will. We've given Wikipedia enough
• 13:01
Speaker 1: love and Cee, I asked one.
• 13:03
Speaker 2: Of those like a CCSI Miami Magic like one and
• 13:07
Speaker 2: double XL and Criminal Minds.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: Yeah. So, and Adam's like, right away, like the most
• 13:12
Speaker 1: handsome person I've ever seen. He's a little bit older
• 13:15
Speaker 1: than me. He's uh, he's competing against me. He's from Yonkers.
• 13:19
Speaker 1: So immediately we start talking New York and he's like, yeah,
• 13:22
Speaker 1: my best friend from high school and like, my best
• 13:24
Speaker 1: man at my wedding played in the NFL. I'm like, oh, who,
• 13:27
Speaker 1: and he's like Keith Bullock. I'm like, oh, Syracuse legend,
• 13:29
Speaker 1: Keith Bullen, Tennessee Titans, and like my Jeopardy mind because
• 13:32
Speaker 1: I was like, yes, yes, He's like, yes, that's him.
• 13:35
Speaker 1: I'm like thirteen tackles in one game playing against the
• 13:37
Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars in nineteen eighty nine. He's like yeah, dude,
• 13:40
Speaker 1: yeah yeah. So we're hanging a little bit and then
• 13:45
Speaker 1: in comes our third contestant. I don't know who it's
• 13:47
Speaker 1: gonna be, and I see her face and I'm like, oh,
• 13:51
Speaker 1: I know exactly who that is. And there's no way
• 13:54
Speaker 1: that I am playing against this person in Celebrity Jeopardy
• 13:56
Speaker 1: because I also know she went to Harvard is like
• 13:59
Speaker 1: mensa and like works for the United Nations. Mere Cervino,
• 14:03
Speaker 1: the actress who was in Roby and Michelle's Course and
• 14:06
Speaker 1: then won an oscar. What was the Rudy Allen movie
• 14:10
Speaker 1: she won the oscar for with her and Michael Rappaport
• 14:12
Speaker 1: and Woody U great movie. Look it up, Mere Servino.
• 14:16
Speaker 1: This is what we do on the podcast. I just
• 14:17
Speaker 1: come in out of his fire at aeron Mighty Afrodite
• 14:20
Speaker 1: Mighty Afred Diity Very good movie nineteen nineties, Woody Allen.
• 14:24
Speaker 1: She I think was either nominated or won an Oscar
• 14:27
Speaker 1: for that role as Best Supporting Actress. She's fantastic in it,
• 14:31
Speaker 1: and I have since watched it since did she win
• 14:33
Speaker 1: Best support She supporting her father, the late Paul Cervino,
• 14:37
Speaker 1: who of course is in Goodfellas as the top of
• 14:41
Speaker 1: the family. And you know he's in prison and he's
• 14:43
Speaker 1: slicing the onions whatever it is anyway, garlic or onions.
• 14:47
  Speaker 1: I forget.
• 14:49
Speaker 2: I guess that wasn't one of the questions. No, yes, yeah,
• 14:52
Speaker 2: they didn't ask about her father.
• 14:53
Speaker 1: So we get out there and they tell me hand
• 14:57
Speaker 1: me over your phone. No phone's allowed in the studio.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: A because of the sancity of the quiz show and
• 15:05
  Speaker 1: the laws, and B. I think there's a certain magic
• 15:09
Speaker 1: and a lord in that place. But Aaron, when I
• 15:11
Speaker 1: tell you, it felt like walking into like you know,
• 15:14
Speaker 1: picturing field of dreams in the corn stalks of Iowa,
• 15:18
Speaker 1: and shoeless Joe comes walking out there, like that's what
• 15:20
Speaker 1: I felt like, walking into this thing. They have you
• 15:23
Speaker 1: write your name into the thing. Don't you always think like,
• 15:26
Speaker 1: how would I write my name on Jeopardy, I went
• 15:28
Speaker 1: all caps lock. But that was pretty cool, okay, and
• 15:31
Speaker 1: I didn't go with Schrager or Shrags or with Peter,
• 15:35
Speaker 1: just my first name, you know. I felt pretty good
• 15:38
Speaker 1: about that. And then they do a full round practice
• 15:42
Speaker 1: like warm up, warm up, You've got to get down.
• 15:46
Speaker 5: The buzzer and here is the big reveal. The buzzer
• 15:53
Speaker 5: is everything. So here's how it works. With the buzzer,
• 15:58
Speaker 5: they'll say a facto. I'd say number one.
• 16:01
Speaker 1: iHeart podcast in NFL Slash really trying hard to get
• 16:06
Speaker 1: to the super Bowl and doing a live show from there.
• 16:09
Speaker 1: And you have to buzz in right away. But you
• 16:11
Speaker 1: have to buzz in after Ken Jennings finishes. Okay, you
• 16:15
Speaker 1: cannot buzz before it. If you if you buzz in
• 16:18
Speaker 1: before he's finished with the clue, you're doc two seconds.
• 16:20
Speaker 1: You're locked out. And so when you see people hitting
• 16:24
Speaker 1: that buzzer like no, no, no, no, no, no, doing the
• 16:26
Speaker 1: buzzer like that's because they're locked out. They're like, wait,
• 16:28
Speaker 1: why is it not working? Why is that not working?
• 16:30
Speaker 1: So timing on the butzer is everything, and you can't
• 16:33
Speaker 1: practice that at home. You can know all the factoids.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: You could tell me all of you know, King Henry's
• 16:39
Speaker 1: wives or whoever it is, and you could know everything
• 16:42
Speaker 1: about you know, Guadalajara. It doesn't matter if you can't
• 16:46
Speaker 1: get that buzzer in on time and time and right.
• 16:48
Speaker 2: So it's like anticipating how long it takes him to
• 16:51
Speaker 2: finish his sentence. Yeah, and then buzz oh.
• 16:55
Speaker 1: We go through the practice round Sorveno's got it down.
• 17:01
Speaker 1: Her buzzer skills are insane. We go through a practice round.
• 17:05
Speaker 1: She's what is Kim john Oun? What is Polio's string cheese?
• 17:15
Speaker 1: What is remember the Titans?
• 17:17
  Speaker 3: Like?
• 17:17
Speaker 1: She is on it? I'm psyched out. I needed like
• 17:20
Speaker 1: a moment, so I think I was the first person ever.
• 17:23
Speaker 1: They were like, we're about to start, everybody. I said,
• 17:26
  Speaker 1: can I take a pepe break? I went and I
• 17:29
Speaker 1: got microphone off. I had to just take some time.
• 17:32
Speaker 1: I didn't even have to go to the bathroom. I
• 17:33
Speaker 1: took a lap around that studio. I soaked it all
• 17:36
Speaker 1: in and then I straddled up and said let's go.
• 17:40
Speaker 1: And then we did Celebrity Jeopardy and Guys It airs
• 17:44
Speaker 1: next week. I will give you no more clues, no
• 17:47
Speaker 1: more hints. Let's just say me and Mire Cervino and
• 17:49
Speaker 1: Adam Rodriguez had a clash for the ages and I
• 17:55
Speaker 1: want you to watch. I encourage you to watch. And
• 17:59
Speaker 1: with no further ado, let's get to our guest today.
• 18:02
Speaker 1: Aaron Our guest today is the defensive coordinator of the
• 18:05
Speaker 1: Cincinnati He is one of the best coaches in all
• 18:09
Speaker 1: of football. He's been running this unit for some time now,
• 18:11
Speaker 1: and he's got a story to tell Lou and Aroumo
• 18:14
Speaker 1: right after this, with no further ado. He's one of
• 18:20
Speaker 1: the top defensive minds in all of football. He's also
• 18:23
Speaker 1: a fantastic coach, and his team is coming off a
• 18:27
Speaker 1: triumphant Sunday and a big win against a very good
• 18:30
Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks team. It is Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou
• 18:34
Speaker 1: and Aromo. Lou, Welcome to the season with Peter scheger Man.
• 18:38
Speaker 4: I'm happy to be here. Appreciate the introduction.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, and let's start with Sunday. Four sacks, eight tackles
• 18:45
Speaker 1: for a loss, two interceptions, DK Metcalf and Camp Taylor
• 18:51
Speaker 1: getting into it a little bit, a little spicy. It
• 18:53
Speaker 1: was a must win for the Cincinnati Bengals and the
• 18:55
Speaker 1: defense led the way. How did your unit get into
• 18:58
Speaker 1: this one? And what was the approach as you saw
• 19:00
Speaker 1: it all being executed on Sunday.
• 19:02
Speaker 4: So it was you know, didn't start out great.
• 19:03
Speaker 3: You know, they did a good jot with taking the
• 19:05
Speaker 3: ball going right down the field, and you can see,
• 19:08
Speaker 3: you know, the bye week they had a buy prior
• 19:11
Speaker 3: to coming in, so there's a couple of new wrinkles
• 19:13
Speaker 3: for them. But once we settled in, you know, that
• 19:15
Speaker 3: was the only touchdown they scored in the game. And
• 19:18
Speaker 3: you know, our guys just executed in the red zone
• 19:20
Speaker 3: and as you mentioned, you know, our our front four
• 19:23
Speaker 3: really really did a great job pressure in Gino and
• 19:26
Speaker 3: it paid off in the end.
• 19:27
Speaker 1: Talk us through some of these players on this unit,
• 19:29
Speaker 1: because I think it from a national perspective, they were
• 19:31
Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, but
• 19:33
  Speaker 1: there's been a lot of i would say not a
• 19:36
Speaker 1: youth movement in the back end. But like at that
• 19:38
Speaker 1: Super Bowl team, it was Von Bell, it was Eli Apple,
• 19:41
Speaker 1: it was and now there's these young guys. I mentioned
• 19:44
Speaker 1: Taylor Brett, but he's not the only one.
• 19:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you know, we got rookie DJ Turner. You know,
• 19:49
Speaker 3: cheetoh Wuzier has been injured and DJ's come in and
• 19:53
Speaker 3: you know, getting better with each game. We signed Nick
• 19:56
Speaker 3: Scott free agency from the Rams, and then as a
• 19:59
Speaker 3: safety and Dax Hill playing another taking really Jesse Bates'
• 20:03
Speaker 3: role he stepped in, and then Jordan Battle or rookie,
• 20:07
Speaker 3: another rookie from Alabama. So you know, I don't have
• 20:10
Speaker 3: a lot of gray hair, but I'm getting some more each.
• 20:12
Speaker 1: Other, right, I mean that is that the is that
• 20:14
Speaker 1: still the challenge that gets see up in the morning.
• 20:16
Speaker 1: They're like, all right, we have a new fresh fresh
• 20:17
Speaker 1: blood and we've got to throw them in there. And
• 20:19
Speaker 1: guess what you're covering? Tyler Lockett, go, do you get
• 20:21
Speaker 1: excited by that? Is that the challenge that gets you
• 20:23
Speaker 1: out of bed in the morning.
• 20:24
Speaker 3: The good news is, you know they definitely present challenge.
• 20:28
Speaker 4: You know these guys.
• 20:28
Speaker 3: It's just so different for the young guys coming in
• 20:31
Speaker 3: from college these days, and you know, so yeah, it provides, uh,
• 20:35
Speaker 3: it provides us more opportunity to make sure we're as
• 20:38
Speaker 3: coaches staying on you know, dotting our eyes, crossing the.
• 20:41
Speaker 4: T's all that stuff.
• 20:42
Speaker 3: Because it's such a different game and you're playing against
• 20:45
Speaker 3: guys that have done it for a long time. You
• 20:47
Speaker 3: mentioned Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf and man Cam you know,
• 20:51
Speaker 3: kind of you know, took it to him, and I
• 20:53
Speaker 3: was happy and proud to see it.
• 20:55
Speaker 1: This this Bengals team again oh to two to start.
• 20:59
Speaker 1: Everyone's saying they're done. Burrow can't move, and yet here
• 21:03
Speaker 1: we are bye week three and three. What do you
• 21:06
Speaker 1: know in the driver's seat, just like they usually are
• 21:08
Speaker 1: at this point and feeling a little bit better than
• 21:10
Speaker 1: they did in September? Did you have any doubts or
• 21:13
Speaker 1: you knew that this team could bounce back despite the
• 21:15
Speaker 1: O and two start.
• 21:16
Speaker 3: I mean, we've got such great resolve with the players
• 21:19
Speaker 3: that we have. You know, I kind of stole a
• 21:22
Speaker 3: phrase that the my my beloved Yankees we used to
• 21:27
Speaker 3: use and you know, the Core four, you know, And
• 21:30
Speaker 3: and it came to play this weekend where it's the
• 21:32
Speaker 3: last drive of the game and I go over the
• 21:35
Speaker 3: BJ Hill, DJ Reader, Sam Hubbard and Trey Hendrickson and
• 21:40
Speaker 3: I and they were gassed now at the end of
• 21:42
Speaker 3: the game, and I said, you know, I was thinking
• 21:44
Speaker 3: about for a minute putting some fresh legs in there.
• 21:46
Speaker 3: And I checked myself quick and said, you four want.
• 21:51
Speaker 3: I don't want anybody else in the game besides you guys,
• 21:53
Speaker 3: and let's go win the game.
• 21:54
Speaker 4: And they did what they did.
• 21:56
Speaker 3: And those guys are kind of are they They drive
• 21:59
Speaker 3: this ship on our side, and man, they didn't flinch
• 22:02
Speaker 3: in the beginning of the year. You know, again with
• 22:05
Speaker 3: the great veteran leadership that they have, they know who
• 22:07
Speaker 3: we are, they know what we've done and what we've
• 22:09
Speaker 3: accomplished at you know, a high level, and it's just
• 22:12
Speaker 3: a matter of time before we put it all together.
• 22:14
Speaker 1: That's your Jorge Pisada, You're Mariano Rivera, you're Jeter, and
• 22:18
Speaker 1: you're who is the last one?
• 22:20
  Speaker 3: Bernie?
• 22:20
Speaker 1: I would imagine, or do we go Tino Martinez?
• 22:22
  Speaker 3: Bernie?
• 22:22
Speaker 1: Right, It's got to be Bernie. It's not it's who
• 22:25
Speaker 1: is it? Who's the fourth? It's Pettit, Pettit Okay, Bernie
• 22:29
Speaker 1: was before them. Bernie like, okay, got it.
• 22:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, I was surprised when I looked it back up.
• 22:34
Speaker 1: That's the core four. I think of Sam Hubbard. He's
• 22:37
Speaker 1: like such a local guy and he represents everything about
• 22:40
Speaker 1: this Bengals team and whether it be the Ohio state
• 22:42
Speaker 1: roots at Cincinnati roots and the play he made last
• 22:45
Speaker 1: year in the Wildcar Round is really the play that
• 22:47
Speaker 1: most people know him from. But every day this guy
• 22:49
  Speaker 1: brings it. And I watch football, I don't. I'm not
• 22:51
Speaker 1: sure everyone outside of Cincinnati knows just what type of
• 22:54
Speaker 1: player and man that Sam Hubbard is.
• 22:56
Speaker 3: For that defense, well, he's terrific when they introduce him here,
• 22:59
Speaker 3: when they do introduce the defense, you know, and the
• 23:02
Speaker 3: guy the public address announcer starts with Cincinnati's own, you know,
• 23:05
Speaker 3: and then Sam Harbor and he is what we are
• 23:09
Speaker 3: as you mentioned. I mean, the guy played sixty four
• 23:12
Speaker 3: plays the other day, had a ton of production, hit
• 23:16
Speaker 3: the quarterback six times, you know, and just a great
• 23:19
Speaker 3: He's been a great run defender for us for years.
• 23:22
  Speaker 3: He's got a you know, a heck of a pass
• 23:23
Speaker 3: rush game. So he's everything we're all about. And you know,
• 23:26
Speaker 3: you go back to the AFC Championship game two years ago,
• 23:30
Speaker 3: and you know he's the one that's kind of getting
• 23:32
Speaker 3: after Mahomes on that crucial third down stop to force
• 23:37
Speaker 3: them to kick the field goal to get in to
• 23:40
Speaker 3: get in overtime and eventually win the game. So Sam,
• 23:43
Speaker 3: Sam's done so much for us and a great community guy,
• 23:46
Speaker 3: and we just love him.
• 23:48
Speaker 1: We're gonna go backwards, We're gonna go through your career
• 23:50
  Speaker 1: a little bit. But let's let's go just a couple
• 23:52
Speaker 1: of years backwards. That Super Bowl run and then the
• 23:54
Speaker 1: AFC Championship run. When you got to Cincinnati, it was
• 23:58
Speaker 1: it was you, Zach, and it was obviously Callahan is
• 24:00
Speaker 1: the offhys like things were not things were not humming,
• 24:03
Speaker 1: if by any means, And of course there had been
• 24:05
Speaker 1: some good seasons, but no wins, playoffs, nothing in recent years.
• 24:09
Speaker 1: Take us back just the last i would say, twenty
• 24:11
Speaker 1: four months, and just how far this franchise has come
• 24:14
Speaker 1: in the last couple of years alone.
• 24:16
Speaker 3: Well, we're you know, as you mentioned, Zach and Cally
• 24:19
Speaker 3: just doing such a great job and on respective you know,
• 24:22
Speaker 3: Zach as the head coach and Brian is the coordinator
• 24:24
Speaker 3: on offense. But it's so satisfying as a coach and
• 24:30
Speaker 3: some of the players that have been here from the
• 24:31
Speaker 3: beginning when we got here in twenty nineteen, and as
• 24:34
Speaker 3: you mentioned, you know, Marvin had done a great job
• 24:37
Speaker 3: and had really good success, and we just we the
• 24:42
Speaker 3: team that we inherited a little bit older. You know,
• 24:45
Speaker 3: we knew we had to turn the roster over to
• 24:47
Speaker 3: a degree, and those guys had done great things here
• 24:50
Speaker 3: for Cincinnati, and we just knew that, you know, it's
• 24:54
Speaker 3: our time to get some new guys in here and
• 24:57
Speaker 3: to go through that whole thing. And you know, first
• 25:00
Speaker 3: playoff win in thirty some odd years and then oh,
• 25:03
Speaker 3: by the way, you get the first road playoff win
• 25:06
Speaker 3: in team history ever, all those firsts.
• 25:09
Speaker 4: You're just very, very proud to be a part of it.
• 25:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's and I love, I'm so proud of you.
• 25:15
Speaker 1: It's happy for your unit, as you guys have always
• 25:17
Speaker 1: held up your end of the bargain. Let's go back
• 25:21
Speaker 1: your coaching journey nineteen eighty nine. We go to the
• 25:24
Speaker 1: fine borough of Staten Island and the running backs coach
• 25:28
Speaker 1: at Wagner is lou and Arimo. What led you to Wagner?
• 25:33
Speaker 1: And I know you're a Staten Island guy, So just
• 25:34
Speaker 1: take us through how you even thought that this could
• 25:37
Speaker 1: possibly be a career coming from Staten Islands. It's not
• 25:40
Speaker 1: exactly a football hotbit, if I may say so.
• 25:43
  Speaker 4: No, you're good.
• 25:45
Speaker 3: Just you know, my dad was a high school basketball
• 25:50
Speaker 3: coach growing up, so it was always kind of around it.
• 25:52
Speaker 3: He played college basketball at Wagner and was a principal
• 25:55
Speaker 3: and kind of so I always knew I wanted to
• 25:57
Speaker 3: teach and coach, and then one thing led to another.
• 26:01
Speaker 3: You know, I never had a great stellar career playing wise,
• 26:05
Speaker 3: but I always knew I still wanted to be around it,
• 26:08
Speaker 3: and one thing led to another. I got my first
• 26:11
Speaker 3: big break when you know, Dick McPherson called and I
• 26:14
Speaker 3: was able to be a GA at Syracuse where I
• 26:19
Speaker 3: worked for coach Mac and then coached Pascaloni, and kind
• 26:22
Speaker 3: of everything gone from there was just you know, a
• 26:25
Speaker 3: step I thought. I think I went about it the
• 26:27
Speaker 3: right way. I've coached at all levels, you know, from
• 26:30
Speaker 3: Marshall to Harvard to Purdue, you know, and then onto
• 26:32
Speaker 3: the NFL. So great, great experiences along the way, and
• 26:36
Speaker 3: I think that that's one of the things that I
• 26:39
Speaker 3: think is a missing art these days, where you know,
• 26:43
Speaker 3: you learn more what not to do along the way
• 26:45
Speaker 3: and how to coach different types of people all along
• 26:48
Speaker 3: the way, whether it be a non scholarship player or
• 26:51
Speaker 3: an elite athlete in the NFL. So I feel like
• 26:54
Speaker 3: I got the best of all worlds, and I wouldn't
• 26:56
Speaker 3: change my career path for anything.
• 26:58
Speaker 1: I love it. And so you go from Wagner Tocus
• 27:00
Speaker 1: and then this is a cool one US Merchant Marine
• 27:04
Speaker 1: Academy as a defensive coordinator to defensive backs coach. Those
• 27:07
Speaker 1: are young men and women who are going there for
• 27:10
Speaker 1: a different reason than to become NFL players. And yet
• 27:12
Speaker 1: you as a coach, you're going to get the best
• 27:14
Speaker 1: of them, and you're going to see a probably different
• 27:15
Speaker 1: type of individual than you might anywhere else. What was
• 27:18
Speaker 1: that experience like coaching at the US Merchant Marine Academy.
• 27:21
Speaker 3: It was unbelievable because these guys are not only going
• 27:23
Speaker 3: through training camp, but they're also going through what they
• 27:26
Speaker 3: call their pleab year, where they're square in corners and
• 27:30
Speaker 3: you know, getting up at dawn to go for runs.
• 27:33
Speaker 3: And you know, by the way, you don't have those
• 27:35
Speaker 3: guys in the offseason because they're going out to see
• 27:37
Speaker 3: for six months to learn the what they're going to
• 27:39
Speaker 3: do come on as a career and oh, by the way,
• 27:42
Speaker 3: we want a bunch of games, you know, So again
• 27:44
Speaker 3: you learn how to manage your time, manage those type
• 27:47
Speaker 3: of people that have a you know, a greater goal really,
• 27:51
Speaker 3: but at the end of the day. They when football
• 27:53
Speaker 3: season came around, that's what they were all about. It
• 27:55
Speaker 3: was really really unique.
• 27:57
Speaker 1: You know, the experience of being there. I remember talking
• 28:00
Speaker 1: to I forget which player it was, someone came out
• 28:02
Speaker 1: of the Citadel and was playing in the NFL. And
• 28:04
Speaker 1: of course we have our Army and our Navy guys,
• 28:05
Speaker 1: but there is something different about coaching those young men
• 28:09
Speaker 1: and women because, like I said, the priority is of
• 28:12
Speaker 1: course football when you're on the field, but there is
• 28:14
Speaker 1: such a different thing going on. Did you have to
• 28:17
Speaker 1: bend and kind of adjust your coaching style knowing that, yes,
• 28:22
Speaker 1: they might be disciplined, but this is not their top priority.
• 28:25
Speaker 1: Is why they're here at school?
• 28:26
Speaker 4: Well, one hundred percent.
• 28:27
Speaker 3: I was a super I was super young back then,
• 28:29
Speaker 3: just learning how I was going to you know, become
• 28:32
Speaker 3: as a coach. And again, as I mentioned earlier, you
• 28:35
Speaker 3: learned so much of you know, the things you want
• 28:37
  Speaker 3: to do.
• 28:37
Speaker 4: And then well, maybe.
• 28:39
Speaker 3: We can't quite do as much with guys that, you know,
• 28:43
Speaker 3: just coming from Syracuse, we had all these great defenses,
• 28:45
Speaker 3: but you know, you're getting these guys in between their
• 28:48
Speaker 3: you know, engineering classes and trying to install a game
• 28:52
Speaker 3: plan is very challenging.
• 28:55
Speaker 4: Same thing at Harvard.
• 28:56
Speaker 3: You know when I coached at Harvard for all those years,
• 28:58
Speaker 3: and I still stay in touch with a bunch of
• 29:00
Speaker 3: those guys, and we had really good players there. You
• 29:02
Speaker 3: know Matt Burke who played NFL Vikings for a long time, Ravens. Yeah,
• 29:08
Speaker 3: you know, so we had a bunch of guys while
• 29:10
Speaker 3: I was there. I just missed fits he had just
• 29:14
Speaker 3: after me. But again, another situation where I'll never forget.
• 29:17
Speaker 3: I'm in a in a meeting, in a defensive back meeting,
• 29:20
Speaker 3: and I think I said, you know, this stuff isn't
• 29:21
Speaker 3: rocket science. And I was like thinking to myself, like
• 29:23
Speaker 3: anybody here like doing any of that kind.
• 29:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I kind of am coach. I was like, oh,
• 29:33
Speaker 4: gate so cool, cool stuff for sure.
• 29:37
Speaker 1: Okay, So I live in New York and I'm a
• 29:39
Speaker 1: huge comedy nerd. And Colin Jost is the head writer
• 29:42
Speaker 1: for Saturday Night Live. He's a Staten Island native and
• 29:45
Speaker 1: he went to Harvard as and was a part of
• 29:48
Speaker 1: the Lampoon all that. I have to think, you too
• 29:50
Speaker 1: might be the only pipeline of Staten Island to Harvard.
• 29:54
Speaker 1: What's it like when you get plopped in to that
• 29:56
Speaker 1: Harvard and you're all of a sudden with world dignitaries
• 29:59
Speaker 1: and you're in that kind of Was that an adjustment
• 30:01
Speaker 1: going to the Ivy League and dealing with that for
• 30:03
Speaker 1: what six years you were there?
• 30:05
  Speaker 4: Yeah, it was.
• 30:06
Speaker 3: It was quite the adjustment, especially going on some of
• 30:08
  Speaker 3: those home visits.
• 30:09
Speaker 4: Uh, you know, all over the country. It was great.
• 30:12
Speaker 3: Again, another great experience because I got to nationally recruit
• 30:16
Speaker 3: as a young coach where which helped me out later on.
• 30:19
Speaker 3: And uh, you know you're going all over the place
• 30:21
Speaker 3: and you're meeting all types of different people, and yeah,
• 30:25
  Speaker 3: it was.
• 30:25
Speaker 4: It was walking around the.
• 30:27
Speaker 3: Hallowed halls of Harvard as a Staten Island guy was
• 30:30
  Speaker 3: pretty cool.
• 30:31
Speaker 1: Yeah, you go to Marshall for several I guess that's
• 30:34
Speaker 1: during the Leftoo years. I guess you were at Marshall. Yeah.
• 30:37
Speaker 3: Byron was a quarterback. We we won a ton of games.
• 30:40
Speaker 3: I was on the sideline when they carried him down.
• 30:43
  Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
• 30:44
Speaker 3: It was I don't know, minus twelve in the Rubber
• 30:47
Speaker 3: Bowl against the Akron that day. I mean it was
• 30:50
Speaker 3: freezing and you know Byron. It just tells you all
• 30:53
Speaker 3: about Byron, what what kind of he was about to
• 30:55
Speaker 3: be a top ten pick in the draft, and I'll
• 30:57
Speaker 3: never forget. They asked him after the game, they said, hey,
• 31:02
Speaker 3: you know, you know, weren't you worried about your family
• 31:04
Speaker 3: and and what's about to come?
• 31:06
Speaker 4: He goes, my family was out on the field.
• 31:08
Speaker 1: Yes, answer, I was Byron.
• 31:10
Speaker 3: Leftwich to a T and I love Byron Hill today.
• 31:13
Speaker 1: That's awesome. Then Purdue and you're stacking up years and
• 31:17
Speaker 1: years years, and then there's a call twenty twelve Miami Dolphins.
• 31:23
Speaker 1: Who made the call? How'd that come about? And then
• 31:26
Speaker 1: after putting in decades at the college level, what made
• 31:29
Speaker 1: you finally take the leap to get into the big leagues?
• 31:31
Speaker 3: So it's it's it had always been a goal, you know,
• 31:35
Speaker 3: all the years in college. I uh, you know, I
• 31:37
Speaker 3: would always go visit NFL places. I would come to Cincinnati.
• 31:40
Speaker 3: Kevin Coyle was a friend, and I would come here
• 31:42
Speaker 3: and see see those guys with Zim and Marvin. You know,
• 31:46
Speaker 3: I made had an interview. I wasn't ready to get
• 31:49
Speaker 3: the job, probably in two thousand and four or five,
• 31:52
Speaker 3: with Money kiffing down in Tampa to be the coach. Yeah,
• 31:55
Speaker 3: and money and I a lot of my stuff. You know,
• 31:57
Speaker 3: the the u our stuff, I should say, the core
• 32:01
Speaker 3: stuff of the fundamentals of just playing football. You know,
• 32:04
Speaker 3: got a chance to talk to Moni for years, used
• 32:06
Speaker 3: to come after that became good friends and talking ball,
• 32:09
Speaker 3: and that was a great experience. John was the head coach,
• 32:13
Speaker 3: and Rich Basaca was in the room, Joe Barry was
• 32:15
Speaker 3: in the room. So a lot of guys that you know,
• 32:18
Speaker 3: people know and again another great experience. But yeah, so Joe,
• 32:22
Speaker 3: Philbin and I worked together at two colleges. We worked
• 32:26
Speaker 3: together at the us MMA United States Merchant Marine Academy,
• 32:30
Speaker 3: and we also worked together at Harvard, so you talk
• 32:33
Speaker 3: about connections. And then Kevin Coyle was a defensive coordinator.
• 32:37
Speaker 3: Kevin and I know each other for a long time.
• 32:40
Speaker 4: So it kind of just worked out.
• 32:42
Speaker 1: So you get there twenty twelve, What was that leap
• 32:44
Speaker 1: like and what was your first welcome to the NFL
• 32:46
Speaker 1: moment as a coach?
• 32:47
Speaker 3: You know it was it was you know, I remember
• 32:51
Speaker 3: Kevin saying something to me about, you know, hey, these
• 32:54
Speaker 3: guys are different than the college guys. You know, you
• 32:56
Speaker 3: got to make sure you approach it the right way.
• 32:58
  Speaker 3: And but I really didn't. I didn't really see it
• 33:01
Speaker 3: as a big adjustment. I just was always just me
• 33:04
Speaker 3: And I've never in my life knock on Wood had
• 33:06
Speaker 3: a problem with my players ever. And when there is
• 33:09
Speaker 3: a problem, we sit down and we talk about it.
• 33:11
Speaker 3: But I didn't see it as a huge adjustment, just,
• 33:14
Speaker 3: you know, just another another group of guys that wanted
• 33:17
Speaker 3: to be coached, and and as long as you're around
• 33:20
Speaker 3: players like that, you know you'll get the best at them.
• 33:23
Speaker 4: And it worked out.
• 33:25
  Speaker 1: Okay. Then you're there for a while and there's a
• 33:27
Speaker 1: homecoming assort, so you jump for a job in twenty
• 33:29
Speaker 1: eighteen and you come to the New York Giants wearing
• 33:32
Speaker 1: the big blue jerseys, and of course that's in the
• 33:34
Speaker 1: backyard of Staten Island, only a few miles away. DB's coach,
• 33:38
Speaker 1: who was the coach was that McAdoo, who was the
• 33:40
Speaker 1: coach there when you were there with them, Pat Shermer
• 33:42
  Speaker 1: uh Sherman.
• 33:43
Speaker 4: I was with Pat.
• 33:44
Speaker 3: You know, we we let you know when when Joe
• 33:48
Speaker 3: Philbrim was fired down to Miami, Dan Campbell was the
• 33:51
Speaker 3: interim head coach, and Dan named me the defensive coordinator
• 33:56
Speaker 3: and Zach the offensive coordinator. So it's small world.
• 33:59
Speaker 1: Think about that right now, Dave Campbell was the head coach,
• 34:02
Speaker 1: Zach Taylor was the offensive coordinator, and you were the
• 34:04
Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. You look at those three games right now,
• 34:07
Speaker 1: if you go through it, Campbell's maybe you got the
• 34:09
Speaker 1: best team in football with the Lions. Then you and
• 34:11
Speaker 1: Zach a together at the Vengals. How cool is that?
• 34:13
Speaker 3: And oh, by the way, Ben Johnson's floating around the
• 34:15
  Speaker 3: building too.
• 34:16
Speaker 1: It's the mastermind offensive coordinator in Detroit. But this is
• 34:20
Speaker 1: like that team was a forgettable team. No offense to
• 34:22
Speaker 1: those guys. But like no one's writing books about the
• 34:24
Speaker 1: twenty fifteen Miami Dolphins, and here we are. There's all
• 34:27
Speaker 1: that talent in the coaching ranks, similar to the twenty
• 34:30
Speaker 1: eleven Washington Redskins that we talk about, or the mid
• 34:33
Speaker 1: two thousands Buccaneers like you were talking about. There's just
• 34:37
Speaker 1: all these young coaches and it's almost like an incubator.
• 34:39
  Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt.
• 34:40
Speaker 3: And you know we always used to That's how Zach
• 34:42
Speaker 3: and I became so close is during those years in Miami.
• 34:46
Speaker 3: You know, he'd come down to my office or I'd
• 34:47
Speaker 3: go down to his office and just say, what are
• 34:49
Speaker 3: these guys trying to do? And you know, and that's
• 34:52
Speaker 3: how you build friendships, and you know, you get to
• 34:55
Speaker 3: know who you know, Hey, I really we have the
• 34:57
Speaker 3: same way of thinking about things and our philosophies are
• 35:00
Speaker 3: the same and so yeah, so we move on to
• 35:03
Speaker 3: the Giants, which was you know, I mean, I grew
• 35:06
Speaker 3: up in Giant fan. I grew up watching Lawrence Tailor
• 35:08
Speaker 3: and Phil Simms and all those guys. It was, it was,
• 35:10
Speaker 3: it was awesome. I actually my family stayed in Miami
• 35:14
Speaker 3: because my kids were finishing high school and stuff. And
• 35:18
Speaker 3: I'll never forget, like I moved back into you know,
• 35:21
Speaker 3: I could say it now, I moved back into the
• 35:25
Speaker 3: same house, the same room I grew up in. So
• 35:29
Speaker 3: I moved until I ended up obviously got my own
• 35:32
  Speaker 3: place there.
• 35:32
Speaker 1: How long were you there in your old parents' house?
• 35:35
Speaker 3: Correct? It was about two months.
• 35:39
Speaker 1: We got Farah fawcet posters. What are we dealing with here?
• 35:42
Speaker 1: We got Natari Tari and Nintendo? What do we got?
• 35:45
Speaker 3: Thank god, Mom had cleared out most of that stuff
• 35:47
Speaker 3: and it was a guest room. But I will say this,
• 35:50
Speaker 3: she was like, you know, what time are you gonna
• 35:52
Speaker 3: be home for dinner?
• 35:53
Speaker 1: I said, I'm not, you got kids in high school.
• 36:00
Speaker 1: I got what time you got dinner? Okay, your curfew
• 36:02
  Speaker 1: is this?
• 36:02
  Speaker 4: It was?
• 36:03
Speaker 3: It was absolutely classic. But we finally found a place
• 36:06
Speaker 3: to day. And but it was a great two months.
• 36:08
  Speaker 4: I did.
• 36:09
Speaker 3: I did get some great meals and I packed on
• 36:11
  Speaker 3: about fifteen pounds.
• 36:12
Speaker 1: Of course I'm cooking. Before we move on, Dan Campbell,
• 36:17
Speaker 1: did you know then this guy had it?
• 36:19
Speaker 4: Yeah? I love Dan.
• 36:20
Speaker 3: You know, Dan is and he hasn't changed the lick.
• 36:23
Speaker 3: And that's the great thing about Dan. I think myself
• 36:25
Speaker 3: and Zach very similar in terms of while our approaches
• 36:28
Speaker 3: may be different, we have none of us have changed
• 36:32
Speaker 3: our personality. And I think Dan has remained. He's always
• 36:35
Speaker 3: been that way. He was always that way as a
• 36:37
Speaker 3: tight end coach. And you know we saw it for that,
• 36:41
Speaker 3: you know, twelve games we had, you know, we had
• 36:43
Speaker 3: most of the year that year as a head coach.
• 36:46
Speaker 3: We saw how he would be and you know, the
• 36:49
Speaker 3: players rallied around him and us right away, and it
• 36:53
Speaker 3: was it was great.
• 36:54
Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you have a good Dan Campbell story? Sorry
• 36:56
Speaker 1: to go on the Dan Campbell tangent here about the content,
• 36:59
Speaker 1: give me, give me the Dan. You're in an elevator
• 37:02
Speaker 1: at a dinner party. They're like, oh, you worked with
• 37:04
Speaker 1: Dan Campbell. Give me a story.
• 37:05
Speaker 3: What do you got, Well, I'll give you. I'll give
• 37:07
Speaker 3: you a locker room story.
• 37:09
Speaker 4: Nothing weird or anything.
• 37:11
Speaker 3: But he knows me and I know him right, So
• 37:14
Speaker 3: I would come in, we'd come in about the same time.
• 37:16
  Speaker 4: In the morning.
• 37:18
Speaker 3: We'd end up in the you know, just putting our
• 37:21
Speaker 3: coaching gear on, and he would you know, I'm not
• 37:24
Speaker 3: the happiest guy in the morning.
• 37:25
Speaker 4: I'm a little grumpy. And Dan's always ready to go.
• 37:28
Speaker 3: So he would say he would look at the clock,
• 37:31
Speaker 3: say up, can't talk to lou It's not past seven thirty.
• 37:34
Speaker 3: He doesn't talk to anybody, and just break my you
• 37:36
Speaker 3: know what the whole way through.
• 37:37
Speaker 4: So now we still talk about that today.
• 37:39
Speaker 3: I never called He never calls me in the morning
• 37:41
Speaker 3: because he knows I'm not picking it up.
• 37:43
Speaker 1: He knows better. I love that, all right, And then
• 37:49
Speaker 1: your name starts getting hot and you get to Cincinnati,
• 37:52
Speaker 1: you're running this defense, and the last couple off seasons
• 37:55
Speaker 1: you've interviewed for head coaching jobs. What's your approach to
• 37:58
Speaker 1: those interviews? And the Giants were one I know Arizona
• 38:01
Speaker 1: got down to the wire last year. When you go
• 38:04
Speaker 1: in there for those coaching jobs, what is your message
• 38:06
Speaker 1: to these own And I have no doubt you will
• 38:08
Speaker 1: be a head coach in the coming years if you
• 38:09
Speaker 1: want to be. But what's it like going in for
• 38:11
Speaker 1: those interviews and what's your why they should hire coach
• 38:14
  Speaker 1: Lou Romo?
• 38:15
Speaker 4: Yeah? No, I appreciate it, you know.
• 38:17
Speaker 3: To me, I think at the end of the day,
• 38:19
Speaker 3: what moves people, what moves teams, and it's it's how
• 38:24
Speaker 3: you get these players and how you get them to
• 38:27
Speaker 3: do things on a consistent basis, and how you motivate them.
• 38:31
Speaker 3: This is a ultimate, as we all know, an ultimate
• 38:34
Speaker 3: team game and team sport. But unless you can grab
• 38:37
Speaker 3: each and every one of the guys on the team
• 38:39
Speaker 3: at all positions, and I think I've been able to.
• 38:43
Speaker 4: That's one of my strengths.
• 38:44
Speaker 3: It's my biggest strength, is that I've never had an
• 38:47
Speaker 3: issue of making sure that we come together as a group,
• 38:51
Speaker 3: come together as a team, and ultimately, that's what the
• 38:54
Speaker 3: head coach of a team should be is a guy
• 38:56
Speaker 3: that can get guys to move towards a common goal
• 38:59
Speaker 3: and do it in a way that they know that
• 39:02
Speaker 3: there's a great amount of respect on both sides. You know,
• 39:04
Speaker 3: I've always had I've always done a good job of
• 39:06
Speaker 3: that and always done had away with players and make
• 39:11
  Speaker 3: sure we'll managing.
• 39:11
Speaker 4: Them the right way.
• 39:12
Speaker 3: And at the end of the day, you know, you
• 39:14
Speaker 3: just listen to some of the things that they say.
• 39:16
Speaker 3: You know, I'm not an ego guy or anything like that,
• 39:18
Speaker 3: but our guys play for us over here and they
• 39:21
Speaker 3: always have And to me, that's the sign of a
• 39:24
Speaker 3: good coach is that you get your guys to do
• 39:26
  Speaker 3: things consistently.
• 39:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, and you guys play and you mentioned that Core four.
• 39:31
Speaker 1: I watched these Bengals games. Those guys are so dialed
• 39:33
Speaker 1: into the connection you have with Trey Hendrickson. Can you
• 39:38
Speaker 1: talk about that guy, because I feel like he's most
• 39:40
Speaker 1: underrated pass rusher in the sport in this week in
• 39:42
Speaker 1: week out. He's causing trouble and we never talk about
• 39:44
Speaker 1: him in the same conversation as a Miles Garrett or
• 39:46
Speaker 1: a Bosa or even now Max Crosby.
• 39:49
Speaker 3: It's amazing, you know some of the things and DJ
• 39:52
Speaker 3: Reader kind of in the same light in a different
• 39:55
Speaker 3: way in the run game. But Trey is just a phenomenal,
• 39:57
Speaker 3: phenomenal pass rusher. He is always around the quarterback. You know,
• 40:02
Speaker 3: the amount of hits, the false starts, the holding call.
• 40:07
Speaker 3: He's had three or four sacks taken away this year
• 40:10
Speaker 3: because the penalty's on third down or l TV, leading
• 40:12
Speaker 3: the league. So just a relentless guy and his approach
• 40:16
Speaker 3: to the game and is in his approach to how
• 40:19
Speaker 3: we pass rushes, but within this framework of what we're
• 40:22
Speaker 3: doing on defense, which is rare to find these days.
• 40:24
Speaker 3: And I think, to me, again, that's one of the
• 40:27
Speaker 3: reasons why we've been good on defense is it's a
• 40:31
Speaker 3: collective effort. It's not just one guy trying to do
• 40:34
Speaker 3: more than he's supposed to do. And as you mentioned,
• 40:37
Speaker 3: you know, we don't feel like we've got a bunch
• 40:40
Speaker 3: of stars. We've got a bunch of really good football
• 40:42
Speaker 3: players that play together as one.
• 40:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's just what it is when you're playing
• 40:46
Speaker 1: for the Cincinnati Bengals, with the exception of maybe Joe
• 40:48
Speaker 1: Burrow and Jamaar Chase, it's just these are not superstar
• 40:52
Speaker 1: you know. It's not Dallas, it's not the Giants. It's
• 40:55
Speaker 1: not necessarily one of these franchises that gets the same
• 40:58
Speaker 1: light because historically they haven't. And yet it doesn't seem
• 41:01
Speaker 1: like your defensive players cry about that or even seem
• 41:03
  Speaker 1: to care.
• 41:04
Speaker 3: No, they are a prideful group, number one, I'll tell
• 41:07
Speaker 3: you that. And we just kind of quietly go about
• 41:09
Speaker 3: our business. And we know, like the other day during
• 41:12
Speaker 3: the game, I hear DJ reader behind me, just put
• 41:15
Speaker 3: the ball down again, let's go, let's get another stop,
• 41:17
Speaker 3: Let's get another stop. There's never any varying from that,
• 41:21
Speaker 3: and that's rare in today's NFL. And I think again,
• 41:25
Speaker 3: it's a part of the culture that Zach's built as
• 41:29
Speaker 3: a team and what we've tried to do here on defense.
• 41:31
Speaker 3: And we can control what we can control, and a
• 41:34
Speaker 3: lot of people say that, but we demonstrate it, and
• 41:37
Speaker 3: you know, you can see it by how what we've
• 41:39
Speaker 3: done in the biggest games.
• 41:41
Speaker 1: Go around the division real quick, because I think that's
• 41:43
Speaker 1: the most heated division when it comes to rivalry games.
• 41:46
Speaker 1: And I feel like none of those teams like each other.
• 41:48
Speaker 1: None of you guys want to lose to the other
• 41:51
Speaker 1: one and another one want to see the other teams beat
• 41:52
Speaker 1: the other ones. Like I think about even the Bengals,
• 41:55
Speaker 1: like the dynamic between the Bengals and the Ravens is
• 41:58
Speaker 1: very interesting in recent years. When you guys were down,
• 42:01
Speaker 1: the Ravens were dancing on the graves, and then when
• 42:03
Speaker 1: you guys had a chance a couple of years ago,
• 42:05
Speaker 1: you poured it on the Ravens pretty bad. And there's
• 42:07
Speaker 1: no love there. Steelers. Of course, the Browns for whatever reason,
• 42:10
Speaker 1: continue to win against you guys, and then it's like
• 42:13
Speaker 1: a round robin. Everyone seems to beat the other teams
• 42:16
Speaker 1: those division games n AFC North, Now that you've been there
• 42:18
Speaker 1: for several years, just how significant are those matchups?
• 42:21
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's unbelievable.
• 42:22
Speaker 3: I mean, you go back to last year's playoffs and
• 42:25
Speaker 3: I felt like we played the Ravens fifteen weeks in.
• 42:27
Speaker 1: A row the last game of the season, that right
• 42:29
  Speaker 1: in the wild.
• 42:30
Speaker 3: Card, and you know, we all know what we're getting
• 42:33
Speaker 3: into when we, you know, strapping up against those guys
• 42:38
Speaker 3: or the as you mentioned, the Steelers and as you mentioned,
• 42:40
Speaker 3: the Browns have kind of had our number a little bit.
• 42:43
Speaker 3: But you know, it's fierce competitiveness. It's like, you know,
• 42:47
Speaker 3: we used to have this great rivalry a Thanksgiving Day
• 42:50
Speaker 3: game in high school where you got two neighbors they're
• 42:53
Speaker 3: going to go against each other. That's how every one
• 42:55
Speaker 3: of these games are, and you know it's going to
• 42:57
Speaker 3: usually come down right to the end, but they are tough.
• 43:00
Speaker 3: Everything I heard about the AFC North is true. You
• 43:04
Speaker 3: know you're going to come in here and you know,
• 43:07
Speaker 3: as I tell our guys, the only adjustments we're gonna
• 43:09
Speaker 3: have to make is to tighten our chin strap.
• 43:10
  Speaker 4: And right.
• 43:13
Speaker 1: Last year, after the AFC Championship game, there was the
• 43:15
Speaker 1: late hit call and everyone's there, and there was the
• 43:17
Speaker 1: clip of Pratt talking in the locker room, and that
• 43:20
Speaker 1: could blow up a lot of teams. It seemed like
• 43:22
Speaker 1: it didn't affect the Cincinnati Bengals. What was the conversations
• 43:25
Speaker 1: afterwards Asi Pratt and then of course the late hit
• 43:28
Speaker 1: called itself that that really was kind of a non
• 43:31
Speaker 1: issue once the season started.
• 43:33
  Speaker 3: So I think it's a great question, and I actually
• 43:36
Speaker 3: used it on my interview with Arizona and because it
• 43:41
Speaker 3: was a moment where, you know, Jermaine is an emotional guy,
• 43:44
Speaker 3: and that's an emotional moment at the highest level where
• 43:47
Speaker 3: three points away from going to back to back Super Bowls,
• 43:50
Speaker 3: and so he said what he said, But the next
• 43:55
Speaker 3: day in the locker room, Jermaine is basically crying and saying,
• 43:59
Speaker 3: you know, it's my fault. I was.
• 44:01
Speaker 4: You know, I shouldn't have said what I said.
• 44:03
Speaker 3: You know, Joe is part of the reasons why we
• 44:05
Speaker 3: got to this point and just squashed it immediately without
• 44:09
Speaker 3: I didn't have to say nothing to him, Zach didn't
• 44:11
Speaker 3: have to say anything to him.
• 44:12
Speaker 4: It was just a heated moment. But but it was
• 44:14
  Speaker 4: squashed right away.
• 44:15
Speaker 3: And oh, by the way, bj Hill has his arm
• 44:18
Speaker 3: around Joseph who's crying in the locker room because he
• 44:21
  Speaker 3: obviously didn't.
• 44:22
Speaker 4: Want to do that.
• 44:24
Speaker 3: And just said, no more questions for him. I'll answer
• 44:27
Speaker 3: his questions today. And so again, to me, I showed
• 44:30
Speaker 3: that I had all I had my.
• 44:32
Speaker 1: Pet emotional, I get emotional. Are you talking about it?
• 44:35
Speaker 3: It was and I felt the need to like, well,
• 44:37
Speaker 3: how do you how do you show culture? How do
• 44:40
Speaker 3: you what's your way of changing our culture?
• 44:42
Speaker 4: Well? Here here it is, let me show you.
• 44:44
Speaker 3: Uh And and these guys want to you know, they
• 44:47
Speaker 3: want to not only play for each other, but they're
• 44:50
Speaker 3: going to stand up for each other in the most
• 44:52
  Speaker 3: heated moments.
• 44:53
Speaker 4: You know, when everything's going good and you're winning games,
• 44:56
Speaker 4: anybody can be the head coach.
• 44:57
Speaker 3: Okay, it's when you have gone through what we've gone
• 45:01
Speaker 3: through here from five years ago to where we are
• 45:04
Speaker 3: now and and all of the steps away, both positively
• 45:08
Speaker 3: and negatively, that you really know what is needed to
• 45:10
Speaker 3: be done to change a team around.
• 45:13
  Speaker 1: That's beautiful.
• 45:14
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 45:14
Speaker 1: We did a little rapid fire here to wrap things up.
• 45:16
Speaker 1: I love talking to you. I can talk to you
• 45:18
Speaker 1: for an hour. You don't have an hour. You're doing
• 45:19
Speaker 1: a solid and giving me some time. You're prepared for
• 45:21
Speaker 1: your next game. You've coached for many years NFL college.
• 45:26
Speaker 1: Who is the offensive player that you would say is
• 45:29
Speaker 1: just an absolute freak that you prepare for night and day,
• 45:32
Speaker 1: and then they get out there and it's like could
• 45:34
Speaker 1: be active, could be current, could be for me, You're
• 45:36
Speaker 1: just like, holy crap, there is no answer for when
• 45:39
Speaker 1: this guy is on his game.
• 45:40
  Speaker 3: I mean, there's there's there's some ones that you know.
• 45:43
Speaker 3: I go back to Calvin Johnson. We were trying to
• 45:45
Speaker 3: get ready for him at when he was at Detroit
• 45:48
Speaker 3: and it's like, okay, what do we do? Thank god
• 45:52
Speaker 3: I had thank god I had Brent Grimes where he
• 45:54
Speaker 3: could like jump through.
• 45:56
Speaker 4: And made that great.
• 45:57
Speaker 3: I remember that one yeah, great one, but but he
• 46:00
Speaker 3: had Brent was hanging all over him on another where
• 46:02
Speaker 3: he caught a touchdown on him and he couldn't get
• 46:04
Speaker 3: you know, kind of get through to him. But I
• 46:06
Speaker 3: mean that from a wide receiver standpoint, he was damn
• 46:10
Speaker 3: near impossible. You know, We've got Lamar in our division
• 46:12
Speaker 3: that we have to face twice and just to you know,
• 46:15
Speaker 3: just a he's the best athlete on the field when
• 46:18
Speaker 3: he's out there. But there's there's so many. Those are
• 46:21
Speaker 3: the two that come to mind. You know, we're going
• 46:23
Speaker 3: to see one in two weeks. You know, the running
• 46:26
Speaker 3: back at San Francisco, who's pretty good.
• 46:28
Speaker 1: You know, Caffrey's pretty good.
• 46:30
  Speaker 4: So there's a.
• 46:31
Speaker 3: Lot of them, you know, and I'm just fortunate we
• 46:35
Speaker 3: can always draw back on some of those great matchups
• 46:37
Speaker 3: that we've had to try to help our guys, you know,
• 46:40
Speaker 3: get through. And I think, you know, you know, you know,
• 46:44
Speaker 3: an example would be Cam Taylor brid from last week.
• 46:47
Speaker 4: It's DK and you.
• 46:48
Speaker 3: Know, I had showed him some clips of when we
• 46:50
Speaker 3: played Julio Jones back in the day, and I said, listen,
• 46:54
Speaker 3: you know, here's a size difference, but it doesn't matter
• 46:57
Speaker 3: if you play with proper technique and this that.
• 46:58
Speaker 1: And the other thing. How's that work? So I love that.
• 47:00
Speaker 1: So Camp Taylor Britt second year guy. You know SEC guys,
• 47:04
Speaker 1: talent everything. Does he know? Oh who Julio Jones is?
• 47:07
Speaker 1: Did he grow up watching Hulo? And you're like, look,
• 47:09
Speaker 1: your receiver is DK Metcalf, you know him, But here's
• 47:11
Speaker 1: Julio Jones. And here's how you would defend a guy
• 47:13
Speaker 1: who's arguably the greatest of his generation. And is he
• 47:16
Speaker 1: like all right, I'll go watch tape of Julio Or
• 47:18
Speaker 1: is he like get out of here, coach, I'm watching
• 47:20
Speaker 1: DK metf or I don't want to deal with it
• 47:21
  Speaker 1: at all.
• 47:22
Speaker 3: No, he's like a sponge. He wants to he wants
• 47:24
Speaker 3: to learn and hear everything. I just showed him a
• 47:26
Speaker 3: couple of clips when we played him, probably twenty thirteen,
• 47:30
Speaker 3: I think it was when he was Atlanta, you know.
• 47:33
Speaker 1: At his height of his Grenking shop.
• 47:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, and we had a couple of good plays against him. Now,
• 47:39
Speaker 3: there was some bad ones I didn't show him, but
• 47:40
Speaker 3: of course hi that yeah, yeah, yeah, but he cam
• 47:46
Speaker 3: listens to everything. But I just think it's it's great
• 47:48
Speaker 3: when you can show former players against great players and
• 47:52
Speaker 3: really some of the similar things that we're doing.
• 47:54
  Speaker 4: Now.
• 47:54
Speaker 1: All right, a couple more. Your favorite defensive player in
• 47:58
Speaker 1: the history of the sport. You mentioned you were a
• 47:59
Speaker 1: fan of LT growing up, but as a mastermind of
• 48:02
Speaker 1: defense who has been doing this since nineteen eighty nine
• 48:05
Speaker 1: coaching football, who is your prototype? You say, defensive player?
• 48:08
Speaker 1: Give me this guy?
• 48:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's hard not to say LT. I
• 48:12
Speaker 3: mean that would be you know, the one.
• 48:14
  Speaker 4: I mean.
• 48:15
Speaker 3: I've been around some great rushers. I'll tell you about
• 48:17
Speaker 3: the guys that I've been around, you know. I mean again,
• 48:21
Speaker 3: a quiet guy that probably doesn't get as much.
• 48:23
Speaker 1: Can I guess? Can I guess who it's going to be?
• 48:25
Speaker 1: Go ahead, you're gonna say, Cam, Wake, Wake, Let's go.
• 48:29
Speaker 1: Can't wake? His flowers gets no love.
• 48:31
Speaker 4: No love the guy.
• 48:32
Speaker 3: You know, there's only about thirty some odd guys in
• 48:35
Speaker 3: the NFL that have over one hundred sacks in their
• 48:37
Speaker 3: career and maybe more now. Last time I checked, it
• 48:39
Speaker 3: was in the thirties. I mean thirty guys, ever, and
• 48:42
Speaker 3: Cam is one of those.
• 48:43
  Speaker 4: Now.
• 48:44
Speaker 3: Cam used to sit next to me for six years
• 48:46
Speaker 3: in the team meeting, so he's my guy. But I've
• 48:49
Speaker 3: never seen a guy rush as consistent as Cam and
• 48:54
Speaker 3: is as powerful as he was, and how he affected games.
• 48:57
Speaker 3: You know, So giving me a guy, I mean.
• 49:00
  Speaker 2: I.
• 49:03
Speaker 1: Get it all right. Last one coolest non football person
• 49:09
Speaker 1: that you've got to come across that you've got to
• 49:10
Speaker 1: spend time with, whether it be a celebrity, legendary leader,
• 49:15
Speaker 1: someone in the business world that this career has led
• 49:18
Speaker 1: to where hey, I got the opportunity to meet this
• 49:20
  Speaker 1: person as well.
• 49:23
  Speaker 4: Yeah, let's see.
• 49:24
Speaker 3: So I would say, you know, just some of my
• 49:27
Speaker 3: Harvard buddies that I used to coach are now very
• 49:31
Speaker 3: prominent people around the in the business world and other things.
• 49:34
Speaker 3: So Jase Snowden, who's the CEO of Penn Gaming. Jay
• 49:40
Speaker 3: and I played some golf this summer and he introduced
• 49:43
Speaker 3: me to a few people. But when you're around, when
• 49:45
Speaker 3: you're around guys like that and the and the reach
• 49:48
Speaker 3: that they have and the way they talk about the
• 49:51
Speaker 3: people that they talk about, it's pretty cool. And just
• 49:53
Speaker 3: listening to how a guy like.
• 49:55
Speaker 1: That how build a company is how.
• 49:59
Speaker 3: They build a company, how they manage their employees, how
• 50:02
Speaker 3: all of that And not only do we play golf,
• 50:05
Speaker 3: but you know, you just s in there and we're
• 50:07
Speaker 3: going back and forth because when I was coaching him,
• 50:09
Speaker 3: it was probably about a six year age difference.
• 50:11
Speaker 1: I don't know six eight What position was he in college?
• 50:14
Speaker 3: Jay was a quarterback that we turned into it I
• 50:17
Speaker 3: wanted as a safety.
• 50:18
Speaker 4: In his last two years he played safety for me.
• 50:20
Speaker 1: And he ends up selling Penn Gaming or the rights
• 50:23
Speaker 1: to pend At to ESPN for about a billion dollars.
• 50:26
Speaker 1: Like last week or something that's not.
• 50:27
Speaker 4: Bad, No, not a bad day at the office.
• 50:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, when I asked him, like, you come into the
• 50:32
Speaker 3: game this week, I don't want to hear any you
• 50:34
Speaker 3: know bs. You can't you know, can't get a flight?
• 50:39
Speaker 1: Yeah? Who else? I love this? You go down these
• 50:41
Speaker 1: Harvard walls, You're probably having all sorts of different people.
• 50:44
Speaker 1: I love this, this image of you as a football
• 50:46
Speaker 1: coach of all these guys.
• 50:47
Speaker 4: Well, we had I tell you what we did have.
• 50:51
Speaker 3: Warren Buffett walked through the halls of the Miami Dolphin facility.
• 50:55
Speaker 1: Do we have a coke? Was he drinking? The story
• 50:58
Speaker 1: is he has every day he starts with a coke.
• 51:00
Speaker 1: I think I bet you he's not drinking coke.
• 51:02
Speaker 3: I didn't do that, But this is not like I'm
• 51:05
Speaker 3: not telling any he was in pregame?
• 51:08
Speaker 1: Is any friends with Sue? Is that what it was? Like?
• 51:10
Speaker 3: Him? A sewer boys, So he was in pregame with
• 51:15
  Speaker 3: shoulder pads and.
• 51:19
Speaker 4: Go find the tape.
• 51:20
Speaker 1: It's out there, some Warren Buffett wearing shoulder pads and
• 51:26
Speaker 1: a helmet and h and Domkin Sue Jersey after Mike
• 51:30
Speaker 1: Tannebaum just signed Sue for the biggest contract of all time.
• 51:33
Speaker 4: Yes, sir, yes, sir.
• 51:37
Speaker 1: Do you ask Buffett anything? Are you just kind of
• 51:39
  Speaker 1: sheepishly nod your.
• 51:40
Speaker 4: Head like is that really? What is am I dreaming?
• 51:43
  Speaker 1: Like?
• 51:43
Speaker 3: What is going on right now? As we're getting ready
• 51:46
Speaker 3: to play somebody, I'm like, is that really warm? Buffett
• 51:48
Speaker 3: in a in a Halloween costume essentially?
• 51:51
Speaker 1: And it was all right. My last one is very
• 51:54
Speaker 1: personal to you. Saturday Night Fever is a movie from
• 51:56
Speaker 1: the seventies. Anyone who knows anything immediately it says about
• 52:00
Speaker 1: Staten Island all like Saturay Night Fever. You had to
• 52:02
Speaker 1: answer those questions your entire childhood, I'm sure, right through
• 52:05
Speaker 1: college and right through the pros. It's kind of a
• 52:06
Speaker 1: dated reference now. I think Staten Island's having a little
• 52:09
Speaker 1: resurgence right now. You got you doing this at the
• 52:12
Speaker 1: NFL level. You got Pete Davidson, you got Colin Jokes,
• 52:15
Speaker 1: you got the impractical jokers. I feel like Staten Island's
• 52:18
Speaker 1: having a moment. How proud are you of Staten Island?
• 52:21
Speaker 1: And take this moment here to tell all those Manhattan
• 52:23
Speaker 1: snobs that, you know what, You're not the only show
• 52:25
  Speaker 1: in town.
• 52:26
  Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt.
• 52:27
Speaker 3: We've always felt like the forgotten borough. When I tell
• 52:29
Speaker 3: people that I'm from New York City, they will where
• 52:33
Speaker 3: I'm like, well, Staten Island.
• 52:34
Speaker 4: They're like, no, no, no, it's not New York. No, I
• 52:36
  Speaker 4: said it is.
• 52:37
Speaker 3: There's five boroughs and we're one of them. But no,
• 52:40
Speaker 3: I you know, I love growing up there. It's part
• 52:43
Speaker 3: of again who I am and what you know, I'll
• 52:46
Speaker 3: never forget. I was going to probably fifth or sixth grade,
• 52:50
Speaker 3: standing on a city bus, waiting for the city bus
• 52:53
Speaker 3: to go, and you know, you're getting on that bus
• 52:55
Speaker 3: with all types of different people, and it's that's one scenario.
• 52:59
Speaker 3: But that's made me who I am today, and I
• 53:01
Speaker 3: wouldn't want to grow grown up anywhere else around. I
• 53:04
Speaker 3: still have great friends from there, and you know, most
• 53:07
Speaker 3: of my family lives there still, and you know, I
• 53:12
Speaker 3: go right back to Donino's Pizza every time I go.
• 53:14
Speaker 1: Come on, talk about it, Danino's Pizza. Were you a
• 53:18
Speaker 1: faery guy into the city or do you take the verizontal.
• 53:20
Speaker 3: Bridge more the more? The bridge ferry every now and again?
• 53:24
Speaker 3: But uh uh yeah, I was more of a more
• 53:27
Speaker 3: of a go over the arizonta.
• 53:29
Speaker 1: Okay, are you into the Impractical Jokers? Do you know
• 53:31
  Speaker 1: their work?
• 53:32
Speaker 4: So I do. I watched them. They're funny.
• 53:35
Speaker 3: My son when I went to the Giants, he transferred
• 53:39
Speaker 3: to from Saint Thomas Aquinas down in Fort Lauderdale to Farrell,
• 53:42
Speaker 3: my senior Farrell and my brother in law went to college.
• 53:46
Speaker 3: I went to Farrell, I guess at the same time
• 53:48
Speaker 3: when those guys were there. So, uh, funny story. A
• 53:52
Speaker 3: bunch of Farrell guys came to this past game against
• 53:56
  Speaker 3: the Seahawks.
• 53:57
  Speaker 1: Yeah really yeah.
• 53:58
Speaker 3: They were wearing Farrell pullovers and they got asked like
• 54:03
Speaker 3: five six times like, hey, is it that where the
• 54:05
Speaker 3: Impractical Jokers are from?
• 54:06
Speaker 4: So there you go.
• 54:07
Speaker 3: But yeah, we've got we're getting a little bit of
• 54:09
Speaker 3: a name for ourselves for sure.
• 54:10
Speaker 1: I love it, dude, Thank you and the Bengals have
• 54:12
Speaker 1: a name from how's that transition? The Bengals are making
• 54:14
Speaker 1: a name for themselves. You guys are already well on
• 54:16
Speaker 1: the scene. You know my feelings felt. You've seen me
• 54:19
Speaker 1: talk about you on TV, but also just in our interactions.
• 54:21
Speaker 1: I think you're the best of the best, and it
• 54:23
Speaker 1: means so much to me that you would come on
• 54:25
Speaker 1: the podcast and from the Merchant Marine Academy to now
• 54:28
Speaker 1: the top of the game in the NFL. It's been
• 54:30
Speaker 1: a pretty cool story, dude.
• 54:32
Speaker 4: I really appreciate it.
• 54:33
Speaker 3: Appreciate you having me and uh, we're just looking forward
• 54:35
Speaker 3: to keep this thing rolling.
• 54:36
Speaker 4: Man, I appreciate it.
• 54:38
Speaker 1: That's the approach, guys. Lou Amo defensive coordinator of the
• 54:40
Speaker 1: Bengals and a head coach of your team in the
• 54:43
Speaker 1: next couple of years. We appreciate you coming on, man.
• 54:45
Speaker 1: Thanks thank you Aaron coach Louena Rumo. I feel like
• 54:48
Speaker 1: these guys come on and you walk away, You're like,
• 54:50
Speaker 1: all right, hire them for my head coaching job. I
• 54:51
Speaker 1: don't know how Arizona walked out of that meeting. It
• 54:54
Speaker 1: wasn't like, yes that guy now, Agan, It's been great,
• 54:56
Speaker 1: But I love lou and I think his unit always
• 54:59
Speaker 1: ends up playing well, and that's with a rotating bunch
• 55:02
Speaker 1: of names at that defensive back position, which is not
• 55:05
Speaker 1: an easy position to fill, especially with young guys in
• 55:06
  Speaker 1: that conference.
• 55:07
