• 1:01
  Don Armstrong: Greg, good morning.
• 1:02
  Don Armstrong: How are you?
• 1:03
  SPEAKER_00: Good.
• 1:03
SPEAKER_00: How are you all doing?
• 1:04
Don Armstrong: Where are you, Greg?
• 1:05
Don Armstrong: What are you in the shop?
• 1:07
Don Armstrong: Is that a green screen?
• 1:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's actually my garage.
• 1:11
SPEAKER_00: And strangely enough, both of those cars have been sold.
• 1:14
SPEAKER_00: I don't know why it keeps showing up.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_00: But one is uh unrestored Pontiac GTO on the bottom, and uh that was on Jalen's garage about two years ago, and then the one up top is a uh kind of a beater Mustang, but it's a K Code Hypo fastback.
• 1:28
  SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
• 1:29
  SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, they're both gone.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_00: So I have empty two empty spots in my garage.
• 1:34
SPEAKER_00: So if you have something for me, let me know.
• 1:36
  Don Armstrong: You know what?
• 1:36
Don Armstrong: Uh listen, as a as a car guy, we always got something for you, Greg.
• 1:42
Don Armstrong: We can fill we can fill those slots.
• 1:44
Don Armstrong: How much you got in your pocket?
• 1:45
Don Armstrong: How much you willing to spend, you know?
• 1:47
  SPEAKER_00: That's I like that 67 vet.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_00: I love the stinger hood on it.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh yeah, and I love it.
• 1:53
Don Armstrong: I've seen them on Hemmings, uh Heming Hemings uh auto auction, and I'm sure that you could find one on there.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_00: I decided to let the car come to me.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: Both those cars behind me came to me.
• 2:04
SPEAKER_00: I didn't search them out, so I'm like, all right, let's see uh let's see what comes around the bend.
• 2:09
Don Armstrong: You know, so people know you, Greg, because I know how that works, and it's like, hey, Greg's got a pocket full of cash because he sold those two cars.
• 2:19
Don Armstrong: I'm gonna go out on a limb here.
• 2:21
Mike Marrs: And he's got an empty bay in the garage.
• 2:23
Mike Marrs: Yeah, two of them.
• 2:24
Mike Marrs: Two of them actually.
• 2:25
Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, I'm thinking, Greg, there's a Buick in your future.
• 2:29
  Jeff Dziekan: Grand National.
• 2:30
Jeff Dziekan: Well, it's gonna come to you, brother.
• 2:33
Jeff Dziekan: It's gonna come to you.
• 2:34
Don Armstrong: So you like collecting cars that are unique and sought after.
• 2:39
Don Armstrong: That's your thing, I got a feeling.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, something that has a story or is like a peak performance of the era.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_00: Now, let me start with I I saw your in how you closed the last section about cheap cars, and my first car was a 68 Mustang coupe for a thousand dollars with a six-cylinder and a three-speed.
• 2:57
SPEAKER_00: So I'm all about cheap cars.
• 2:58
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_00: It's all about the experience, and and it's the enthusiast guide to collector cars, not car collecting.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_00: So it's more of an entry guide into the world of collector cars.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_00: I don't really talk about collecting cars, other than kind of like, well, if you want a Mercedes 300 goal wing, maybe you don't start there, maybe start with an entry-level Mercedes of the same era.
• 3:18
Jeff Dziekan: So, what you said in the beginning, you want the car to come to you.
• 3:21
Jeff Dziekan: So that's probably is that part of the book that you know, are you recommending folks do that within the book, or are you actively going out and pursuing a vehicle through the book?
• 3:30
SPEAKER_00: No, I tell uh in the book, I I encourage people to be educated about you know the first collector car they might pursue.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_00: You might like second something, but you know what, you have no idea about it.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_00: And I I go back to when I wanted an own Mustang when I was like 19 years old, 17 years old, long time ago.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_00: And someone told me, you know, when you're looking at these old cars, you don't know what's right and what's wrong.
• 3:51
SPEAKER_00: And they said, Well, I suggest they suggested I join the local club, you know.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_00: So I joined the Mustang Club, I became an MCA judge, and you know, I did that because when I looked at a car, I wanted to know what was right as well as what was wrong to make an educated purchase.
• 4:07
Don Armstrong: Yeah, what to look for.
• 4:08
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_00: Cause you know this, there's so much crap out there.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yes, there is, yes, definitely.
• 4:14
Don Armstrong: Yeah, and um speaking of that, you know, if you're starting off, you got to start off with buying something.
• 4:23
Don Armstrong: Yeah, and uh, you know, you may be driving it already and not know it.
• 4:28
Don Armstrong: Um, for instance, and we didn't know it at the time.
• 4:31
Don Armstrong: I'm thinking of the the Buick, the GS.
• 4:34
Don Armstrong: I mean, you know, they were higher priced cars at the time, but they weren't something that I remember people seeking out, except for real, honest to good, uh performance-oriented guys.
• 4:49
Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, and then they were and then they went into the aftermarket, and then it's kind of like lost its zest, but now those cars are well sought after, and they're getting some big bucks in the party stores, yeah, like the old Pontiac Bonneville's and things, big motor, big car, and it hauled tail.
• 5:06
  Jeff Dziekan: You agree?
• 5:06
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do agree, absolutely.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_00: And in my book, I actually talk about the Grand National as the American muscle car that kind of kept the muscle car alive.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you think about it back in that era, I'm a Mustang guy, but Fox Body Mustangs weren't fast, you know.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_00: They had, you know, yes, they had a V8, but you know, 220 horsepower, they made a lot of noise, but they weren't fast.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_00: That that Grand National was faster than the Testerosa of the day.
• 5:31
SPEAKER_00: And it's what kept kind of the the muscle car flame alive in the Malays era, as we like to say.
• 5:37
Jeff Dziekan: I'm gonna put Greg on my Christmas list.
• 5:38
Jeff Dziekan: He's talking about Grand Nationals and all that.
• 5:41
  SPEAKER_00: Hey, you know what?
• 5:42
  SPEAKER_00: I'll talk about Catalina's.
• 5:44
  SPEAKER_00: I looked at a 421 the other day.
• 5:46
Don Armstrong: Well, uh for Jeff, Jeff has been known to go to the dealership and buy the emblem and put it on the side of his Buick or whatever it whatever it is that he's driving.
• 5:58
Don Armstrong: So people well, it is true because he had a uh what was the what was the Cadillac wagon?
• 6:05
Jeff Dziekan: It was a Cadillac SRX.
• 6:06
Jeff Dziekan: I had it washed at a Cadillac dealership.
• 6:08
Jeff Dziekan: The the the the logo or the tag for the 3.6 came off the back.
• 6:14
Jeff Dziekan: And they said they didn't have one, but they had a V.
• 6:16
Jeff Dziekan: I said, put it on.
• 6:17
Jeff Dziekan: So they put a V on the back, and I had an SRX V.
• 6:20
Jeff Dziekan: And I used to get comments, hey man, is that really it's a it's an SRX.
• 6:25
  Jeff Dziekan: That's right.
• 6:25
  Jeff Dziekan: That's right.
• 6:26
Don Armstrong: That's an SRX V.
• 6:27
  Don Armstrong: No, not.
• 6:28
Don Armstrong: So he's been known to do this sort of things.
• 6:30
SPEAKER_00: So one time to say that I was at a cruising yesterday and a guy had a 69 Mach 1 428 Shaker Hood.
• 6:37
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, is that the original 428?
• 6:39
SPEAKER_00: I mean, no, I said, is that an R code?
• 6:41
SPEAKER_00: Because you had the R code or you had the Q code.
• 6:43
  SPEAKER_00: He's like, No, it's an S code, which is a 390 big block.
• 6:47
SPEAKER_00: It's a big block, but he had 428 badges all over that thing.
• 6:50
  Don Armstrong: Yeah.
• 6:51
Don Armstrong: Well, there are there are those.
• 6:53
Don Armstrong: And you know, there are people like me that would go buy that car when it's uh at a at a show, uh, you know, a car, wherever it is.
• 7:00
Don Armstrong: The guy opens a hood and he'd tell me, hey man, this is you know, this is and I would believe him because I don't know.
• 7:06
  Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
• 7:07
  Don Armstrong: Yeah.
• 7:08
  Don Armstrong: Yeah.
• 7:08
Don Armstrong: Uh so there is that, and I'm sure that you've dealt with that.
• 7:12
Don Armstrong: And um, you've probably been fooled a time or two, I would guess.
• 7:16
Don Armstrong: You've been around long enough that you're going, Well, isn't that a and the guy goes, Oh, yeah, it is, and it's really not.
• 7:22
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 7:22
SPEAKER_00: You have to be so careful nowadays, it's crazy.
• 7:25
SPEAKER_00: And you know, just because you buy a car, you're going to make a mistake, especially in your first one, you know.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_00: And so that 68 Mustang I bought, I didn't know how to work on an old car, you know, and it would I would drive it and it would conk out like it wasn't getting fuel.
• 7:39
SPEAKER_00: And eventually I realized that there was so much rust in the gas tank, it was clock clogging the fuel filter.
• 7:45
  Jeff Dziekan: Oh wow.
• 7:46
  SPEAKER_00: And I didn't have any money.
• 7:47
SPEAKER_00: And so when it would do that, I would pull over, I'd pull out the fuel filter, shake out the rust, and I'd put the same fuel filter back on it.
• 7:55
SPEAKER_00: And I did that for like a year and a half because college kids have no money.
• 7:58
  Mike Marrs: Yeah, no, no.
• 7:59
Mike Marrs: So, so would your book, the the collector's guide, would would that help somebody with some of that stuff?
• 8:05
Mike Marrs: Kind of working through it?
• 8:06
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 8:07
SPEAKER_00: So in the collector's guide, I I really wanted to give an overview of every car era.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_00: So it's not a deep dive, it's not like you know, the cylinder wall thickness of a 917 Porsche, anything like that.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_00: But it's like, what is the era, like brass era?
• 8:20
  SPEAKER_00: What is that?
• 8:21
  SPEAKER_00: Why is that important?
• 8:22
SPEAKER_00: What are some innovations of the time?
• 8:24
SPEAKER_00: Why do these cars matter?
• 8:26
SPEAKER_00: But then it also has collector considerations.
• 8:28
SPEAKER_00: So if you do want to buy one of these cars, what are some things to think about before you do purchase one of those?
• 8:34
SPEAKER_00: I do uh like a timeline of the era, like you know what, back then they they didn't know if we're using a steering wheel or a tiller, right side, left side.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_00: So, what what were some of the innovations that occurred during that era?
• 8:46
SPEAKER_00: And then I also have like what I call the collector's ladder.
• 8:49
  SPEAKER_00: So, what's an entry-level brass era car, what's a mid-level, and then what's a blue chip?
• 8:53
SPEAKER_00: And I throw them some fun fun auction results because those are always fun.
• 8:56
SPEAKER_00: But it's really meant to give an overview of all the eras of this hobby we love so much.
• 9:02
SPEAKER_00: But in an easy, accessible you could read it like in five hours.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_00: I mean, it is 400 pages, but there's like a ton of pictures and uh fun facts, it should be an easy read, and it's the first in a series.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_00: So I'm working on the Enthusiast Guide to Porsche's now.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_00: I'll do American Performance at some point, which will have obviously Buicks and Pontiacs and Vipers and all that kind of stuff.
• 9:23
  SPEAKER_00: So there you go.
• 9:24
Don Armstrong: So Greg, what what are your thoughts about going to auctions and maybe perhaps finding a car that you think you like and buying a car on the auction scene?
• 9:33
SPEAKER_00: Uh I think you you need to have a car specialist in your with you, I guess is the best way to put it.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_00: You need to do your research.
• 9:41
SPEAKER_00: I guess that's the best thing to say.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_00: Uh I worked as a car specialist with Arm Sutheby's for a few years, and the smartest buyers were the ones that reviewed the car ahead of time.
• 9:51
SPEAKER_00: Maybe they had the specialist drive it for them, did all the homework, because there's some incredibly great cars.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_00: And it depends on what you're looking for.
• 9:58
SPEAKER_00: If you're looking for an entry-level car, that's a lot harder than if you're looking for like Clark Gable's Duzenberg that everybody's known about for 40 years.
• 10:06
SPEAKER_00: Like you could go out there and say, All right, I know what this car is.
• 10:10
SPEAKER_00: This is it, it's legit.
• 10:11
SPEAKER_00: Whereas if you're going to try your find your first$15,000 car, you have a lot more stuff to kind of wade through uh to figure that out.
• 10:18
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, definitely need to do your own.
• 10:20
  Don Armstrong: You said$15,000 car.
• 10:22
Don Armstrong: You know, uh that seems to me to be kind of a sweet spot uh spot to get going in in the car collector market because I think that there are a few of those out there that are decent to invest in, maybe keep for a couple of years and then move on to something else or add to the collection.
• 10:40
Don Armstrong: Yeah, or how do you project?
• 10:41
Don Armstrong: Yeah, what do you feel about that?
• 10:43
  SPEAKER_00: Uh, I love that.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_00: And I think you know, you guys might scoff at me, but one of your cheapest ways into the collector car hobby is like a 57 Chevy Bel Air four-door.
• 10:55
  SPEAKER_00: Yep.
• 10:55
SPEAKER_00: You got some great looks to it.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_00: You can still get the V8, you can learn everything you want.
• 11:00
SPEAKER_00: I know where there is one that I should buy.
• 11:02
SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, why am I not buying this car?
• 11:04
  SPEAKER_00: Black with red interior.
• 11:06
SPEAKER_00: And yeah, people, you know what?
• 11:08
SPEAKER_00: The four-door hurdle is getting much lower with today's enthusiasts because they're used to high performance four-doors.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_00: Uh, so you know, a four-door of any generation is a very easy way to get into the hobby.
• 11:20
SPEAKER_00: And then maybe if you do want to keep that going, maybe you know, you you graduate to a you know 57 fuel injected, you know, convertible bell air.
• 11:28
SPEAKER_00: You know, like there's ways to get inexpensively, especially now.
• 11:32
SPEAKER_00: Like I bought my wife a 05 Boxster S, uh, more expensive, but it was 30 grand.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_00: It's a 20-year-old car, and it only has at the time it only had 2,000 miles on it.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_00: It was in a collection since new.
• 11:44
SPEAKER_00: And, you know, you could buy a really nice early 2000s sports car for 15 grand.
• 11:50
Jeff Dziekan: So this your book will help anybody from a concourse uh enthusiast to maybe the guy that wants the 72 Dodge, whatever.
• 11:58
Jeff Dziekan: So it covers all of that, it'll help them out in those categories.
• 12:01
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 12:02
SPEAKER_00: And also it'll help folks understand the other eras.
• 12:05
SPEAKER_00: So I've always been a muscle car pony, you know, guy.
• 12:09
  SPEAKER_00: I also I judge Ferraris, I like that.
• 12:11
  SPEAKER_00: I like supercars.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_00: I never appreciated the classic era until I researched them.
• 12:16
SPEAKER_00: I mean, those cars from like 1928, I think, to 1948, the ones that are at Pebble Beach, those are some of the most special and important cars in the world, and people have been telling me that for years, but I didn't understand it until I uh researched the era.
• 12:30
SPEAKER_00: And I think that's you know, if you like, you know, some my goal is a kid only likes the cars from uh Ferrari Tesseroso or the newest hypercar.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_00: Well, Duesenberg was the fastest car for two decades.
• 12:42
SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about the Duesenberg that was the Ferrari of its time, you know, just exposing new enthusiasts, whether they're 15 or you know, 80, to the entire spectrum of the collector car world, not just one little snippet.
• 12:56
Don Armstrong: Well, you know, Greg, you talked about the 57 four-door, and at this point in our lives, the 57 was a long time ago, and a really nice one has been in some sort of a collection or in somebody's garage, it's been massaged, chances are.
• 13:12
Don Armstrong: And uh, you know, you don't have to deal with the rust and the other problems that come with a car that old.
• 13:19
Don Armstrong: And if you do your homework and you look for one, you're probably gonna find one that suits your needs, but it's not going to be the two-door fuel injected.
• 13:28
  SPEAKER_00: Correct.
• 13:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know, probably has disc brakes on the front, probably has power steering, probably has a 350 that you could work on anytime.
• 13:36
SPEAKER_00: And air conditioning, air conditioning, you know, a lot of good, you know, upgrades, so to speak, without spending, you know, 600 grand for one of these crazy aresto mods at Bear Jackson.
• 13:46
Don Armstrong: Yeah, and let me tell you something, a black with a red interior with some nice white walls on it, that's one of those that you would take to, you know, the symphony on a Saturday night with the wife.
• 13:57
Don Armstrong: And pray to God that the guy that's gonna park the car knows what he's doing.
• 14:00
Mike Marrs: But see, he doesn't take it for that joy ride while you're in top.
• 14:05
Jeff Dziekan: I see some other things because you you're looking at the the four-door, Bel Air, red interior, black, but that's and then there's another shiny object that comes in, you're going, Oh, look at that.
• 14:14
Jeff Dziekan: Maybe I want to look into that.
• 14:15
Jeff Dziekan: So that one goes away and you're looking at something else.
• 14:18
Jeff Dziekan: That's the challenge I see.
• 14:19
Jeff Dziekan: You know, what do you want to what are you gonna land on?
• 14:21
  Don Armstrong: Right.
• 14:22
Don Armstrong: And to me, Greg, uh uh, and since you've actually worked for an auction company, one good way to put your toe in the water, so to speak, is to go to a few auctions, not with the intent of buying something, but just to look and see where the car wound up on the auction block and what it actually sold for.
• 14:41
Don Armstrong: When it takes to give you some real idea about the hobby.
• 14:45
  SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_00: And I love going to uh Mika Minneapolis, I'm based out of Cincinnati, and it's a game I do with my friends.
• 14:51
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, all right, everybody, we got to pick, you know, 30 grand.
• 14:55
SPEAKER_00: All of us pick the car that we would buy if we were real buyers.
• 14:59
Don Armstrong: And don't tell each other until the end.
• 15:01
  SPEAKER_00: Right, right, yeah.
• 15:02
SPEAKER_00: Yes, but even at car shows now, I went to a car show yesterday, and I'm like, all right, what actually interests me at this car show that I would actually be interested in buying?
• 15:11
  SPEAKER_00: And it's really interesting.
• 15:13
SPEAKER_00: I the only two cars that well, one I can't afford, but two I can't afford, but one of them was a 63 silver with red interior split window, four speed.
• 15:23
  SPEAKER_00: I'm like, that's a great combination.
• 15:25
  SPEAKER_00: Can't afford that.
• 15:26
SPEAKER_00: Uh the other was a Pontiac Bonneville 421 convertible tri-car, ooh, black, black interior silver with a black top, and neither were for sale.
• 15:36
  SPEAKER_00: It's just a game I you know, then there was a portion DT3.
• 15:39
SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, well, maybe I could afford the Catalina, you know, but like I said, none of these cars were for sale.
• 15:45
SPEAKER_00: It was just like dream wishing while I'm walking around.
• 15:49
Mike Marrs: And that's the thing, you mentioned Meekham.
• 15:51
Mike Marrs: Meekham comes to Houston, and we've been there a couple of times with the show.
• 15:54
Mike Marrs: But if if you're again, you're trying to figure out what you want to do, that is a great car show just to go there and walk through all the cars.
• 16:03
Mike Marrs: You know, they try and have a thousand here in Houston.
• 16:06
Mike Marrs: That's a lot of cars to go look at even before they hit the auction block.
• 16:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm headed to Monterey next week, and and Broad Arrow has just been announced.
• 16:14
SPEAKER_00: They've been they've become the biggest sponsor of my podcast and my book series.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_00: And so I'll be hanging out at Broad Arrow.
• 16:19
SPEAKER_00: And if you look at some of their cars, they're absolutely unbelievable.
• 16:23
SPEAKER_00: I know the the headline car is a black enzo with red interior that's going at no reserve, which that's just an insane car, but they're pretty deep.
• 16:31
SPEAKER_00: And then you look at all the auction houses.
• 16:33
SPEAKER_00: I mean, Sotheby's has got, you know, some estate sales that are just mind mind-bending, you know, and then you know, that's a lot of those auction houses, it's as good as a Concourse show.
• 16:43
SPEAKER_00: And you see the cars be driven up to the stage and started up, and people looking at them.
• 16:49
SPEAKER_00: So it's just a wonderful event to go to.
• 16:51
Don Armstrong: You know, I'm thinking that you've got two slots there in the garage, a pocket full of cash.
• 16:57
Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, pocket full of cash, and you're just waiting for that moment to get that next car in the collection.
• 17:04
Don Armstrong: What is it that you're really going to go after now?
• 17:08
SPEAKER_00: So I've got, so I say I'm waiting for the car to come to me, but I've got two that I have known for like five years, and they might be available.
• 17:15
SPEAKER_00: And you're this is a turn because I want the experience.
• 17:19
SPEAKER_00: I don't want to always have a Mustang, I don't always want to have a muscle car, I want to, I want to try new cars, new experiences.
• 17:25
SPEAKER_00: So one of them is uh 97 BMW M3 four-door, but what's key is uh my friend bought it new, it only has like 9,500 miles on it.
• 17:35
SPEAKER_00: And boy, you talk about the next generation getting excited about a car.
• 17:38
  SPEAKER_00: That's the one they're excited about.
• 17:39
  SPEAKER_00: The other one is a 79 Porsche, just a regular 911.
• 17:43
SPEAKER_00: And I would love to have an air-cooled Porsche, and uh just to try it out once.
• 17:47
SPEAKER_00: And uh, those are the two that are on my immediate radar, but I think I'd like to try something German.
• 17:53
SPEAKER_00: A friend of mine's got a 72 Mercedes 3.5 two-door coupe that might be interesting, you know.
• 17:59
  SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
• 18:00
Don Armstrong: So it really it boils down to blonde or brunette.
• 18:03
Don Armstrong: That's where you that's the way I look at it.
• 18:05
  Don Armstrong: Yeah, it's something.
• 18:06
Don Armstrong: Hey, Greg, it's great to talk to you.

Don Armstrong: And I'm thinking, you know, racing should be gearing up for uh a fall run.
• 20:42
  Don Armstrong: Right.
• 20:43
Don Armstrong: And who are we brought to?
• 20:44
Don Armstrong: Uh this is sponsored by Oh, the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge.
• 20:48
Jeff Dziekan: Thank you, for that.
• 20:49
Jeff Dziekan: Thank you very much.
• 20:50
Jeff Dziekan: Yes, they had a break last week, but they call it the summer break, and now they're getting into the fall because there's only going to be so many races in each series before they get to like the final cut and then they go for the championship.
• 21:00
Jeff Dziekan: However, Formula One is off this week.
• 21:03
Jeff Dziekan: They will be returning on August 23rd.
• 21:05
Jeff Dziekan: NHRA is off the same weekend.
• 21:07
Jeff Dziekan: They're going to come back 20th through the 23rd.
• 21:09
Jeff Dziekan: So that's going to be That's the big race.
• 21:11
  Jeff Dziekan: Right.
• 21:12
Jeff Dziekan: Uh the Dutch Grand Prix for F1, and then there's going to be the uh Brainerd Nationals.
• 21:17
  Jeff Dziekan: Oh, Brainerd.
• 21:18
  Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
• 21:18
  Jeff Dziekan: Brainerd.
• 21:18
  Jeff Dziekan: Uh next.
• 21:19
Jeff Dziekan: Actually, it's the 20th through 23rd, correct.
• 21:22
Jeff Dziekan: Uh today you've got the O'Reilly series for NASCAR.
• 21:25
  Jeff Dziekan: They're at Iowa.
• 21:26
Jeff Dziekan: That's going to be on the CW.
• 21:28
  Jeff Dziekan: Oh yeah.
• 21:29
Jeff Dziekan: Come get some corn.
• 21:31
Jeff Dziekan: And then uh NASCAR Cup is going to be in Iowa.
• 21:34
Jeff Dziekan: Uh they're going to be tomorrow on the USA network.
• 21:37
  Jeff Dziekan: Indy.
• 21:37
Jeff Dziekan: I watched a little bit of indie practice yesterday and a little bit of practice this morning.
• 21:41
Jeff Dziekan: It was a repeat.
• 21:41
Jeff Dziekan: They're in Portland tomorrow.
• 21:43
Jeff Dziekan: Uh so that will be fun.
• 21:45
  Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, tomorrow.
• 21:46
  Jeff Dziekan: Portland.
• 21:46
Jeff Dziekan: Lawnmower racing is off.
• 21:48
Jeff Dziekan: They're all sharpening their blades and uh airing up the tires.
• 21:51
Jeff Dziekan: So we're going to get back to that on the uh the 22nd.
• 21:54
Don Armstrong: I saw a lawnmower race on one of my reels on Facebook the other day.
• 21:58
Don Armstrong: My God, they must have.
• 22:00
Don Armstrong: Been doing at least 75 miles an hour.
• 22:02
  Don Armstrong: Oh, yeah.
• 22:02
Don Armstrong: They got them low to the ground and leaning into the corners.
• 22:05
  Don Armstrong: All right.
• 22:06
Don Armstrong: Time now for this week in auto history.
• 22:08
Don Armstrong: Uh, that would be Mr.
• 22:09
  Don Armstrong: Mars' job.
• 22:10
  Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
• 22:11
Mike Marrs: We got a few things that we picked up this week that we thought would be interesting to watch out for.
• 22:15
Mike Marrs: Way back in 1917, racing legendary legend Barney Oldfield took his unusual golden submarine to a lot of new speed records.
• 22:28
Mike Marrs: Now, this vehicle was built, uh, is completely enclosed, and it was streamlined and built because a fellow driver Bob Berman was killed in an open cock with his race car.
• 22:38
Mike Marrs: So Barney wanted something a little bit safer.
• 22:40
Mike Marrs: So he got with Harry Miller and Fred Offenhauser, and they built this enclosed racer.
• 22:45
Mike Marrs: Now, during the his time racing, 1917, for example, he took this vehicle to record speed.
• 22:53
Mike Marrs: I mean, this guy was cooking.
• 22:54
Mike Marrs: He got up to 80 miles per hour in this vehicle.
• 22:58
Mike Marrs: Lots of speed records back then.
• 23:01
Mike Marrs: Then the next thing we have is August the 10th, 1907, the first Peking to Paris automobile race ends.
• 23:08
Mike Marrs: Now, think about Peking to Paris.
• 23:11
Mike Marrs: That is 10,000 miles that you gotta go.
• 23:15
Mike Marrs: You gotta go across um the ocean, literally everywhere.
• 23:19
Mike Marrs: There was no modern highways, there was no GPS, no roadside published.
• 23:23
Don Armstrong: Well, they had lots of ducks.
• 23:25
Mike Marrs: Yeah, they had ducks.
• 23:27
Mike Marrs: Yes, they crossed deserts, and there's even one of these pictures is of the bridge that collapsed when they were trying to go across it, so they had to dig out of the bridge to carry on.
• 23:36
Mike Marrs: And this was actually a picture of the winner that won this race when he was trying to get through this bridge.
• 23:44
Mike Marrs: Now, the next we have August 11th, 1966, the first production Chevrolet Camaro was built.
• 23:51
Mike Marrs: And uh it was really a non-pilot production car, and it was completed in Norwood.
• 23:56
Mike Marrs: They created this specifically to challenge Ford's Mustang, and they even invented a little mystery around its name before the announcement.
• 24:03
Mike Marrs: And so they had uh played a game with it, and it offered everything from a hundred and forty horsepower six-cylinder to a 375 horsepower 396.
• 24:12
Mike Marrs: Then coming up next in August the 12th of 1908, the first production Model T is completed.
• 24:18
Mike Marrs: Now, this is important because it it really wasn't famous as part of the moving assembly line, but that's what really brought this out and really made it affordable, and it changed the automobile from a luxury item, something that only the rich people go to forward, into something that uh is more practical transportation, ordinary Americans could actually afford to buy this.
• 24:39
Mike Marrs: Now they began to run, ultimately, there was 15 million of these cars that were built and sold.
• 24:46
Mike Marrs: Then on August the 13th, Friday, August the 13th, 1898.
• 24:50
Mike Marrs: Now, this is I find this, I thought this was really interesting because you know, if you go buy a car, you expect it to be really good.
• 24:57
Mike Marrs: But what if you bought a car that was so bad that you complained so much that the car maker said, well, if you can do better, go build your own.
• 25:05
Mike Marrs: Which is exactly what happened when James Ward Packard bought his new Winton motor carriage.
• 25:12
Mike Marrs: He drove it home to Ohio from Cleveland and it did not go well.
• 25:16
Mike Marrs: He had a lot of troubles, he complained a lot, and eventually Winton told him, if you think you can do better, do it.
• 25:23
Mike Marrs: So he went out and started the Packard Motor Company.
• 25:27
Mike Marrs: So that's what led to Packard being built.
• 25:29
Mike Marrs: And the same thing happened to Ferrari because uh Lamborghini was complaining about the Ferrari, so Ferrari said, Well, you think you can do better, go do it.
• 25:38
  Mike Marrs: So he did.
• 25:39
Mike Marrs: So that's how we got the Lamborghini, just as well.
• 25:42
Mike Marrs: So that's a few things this week in auto history coming up that you might find interesting and want to look into a little more.
• 25:48
  Don Armstrong: I did.
• 25:48
  Don Armstrong: Yes, very good.
• 25:49
  Don Armstrong: Thank you.
• 25:50
  Don Armstrong: Thank you.
• 25:50
Don Armstrong: Ford Motor Company's upcoming$30,000 electric pickup.
• 25:54
Don Armstrong: Yep, they're gonna do that.
• 25:56
Don Armstrong: It's going to be called the Fathom.
• 25:58
  Don Armstrong: Fathom, F-A-T-H-O-M.
• 26:01
Don Armstrong: Uh Ford revealed the name and starting price of$29,945 with shipping.
• 26:06
Don Armstrong: That's just under the$30,000 threshold.
• 26:09
Don Armstrong: Executives said the truck would target in a bid to address the industry's growing affordability crisis.
• 26:15
Don Armstrong: They didn't say anything about getting the car or truck charged.
• 26:19
Don Armstrong: The automaker will open pre-orders for the Fathom in both countries in early 2027, uh, Canada included, with delivery starting later this year.
• 26:28
Don Armstrong: Ford will build the truck in the Louisville, Kentucky plant using a new assembly tree process.
• 26:35
Don Armstrong: Good luck in trying to find out what that means.
• 26:37
Jeff Dziekan: Okay, what's the overnight recall?
• 26:39
  Don Armstrong: Yeah.
• 26:40
Don Armstrong: Uh less than a year after discontinuing its entry-level escape and with hybrid sales surging across the industry, Ford is preparing to address both needs with a new vehicle that would be its lowest price model.
• 26:53
Don Armstrong: Ford executive showed dealers at a private meeting in Las Vegas.
• 26:56
Don Armstrong: Early mock-ups of a small crossover that'll have a starting price of around 25 grand, uh, according to multiple people who were in the room.
• 27:04
Don Armstrong: The vehicle, which the people said would be offered in gasoline and hybrid versions, is expected to go on sale in 2029.
• 27:12
  Don Armstrong: Twenty-nine.
• 27:13
  Don Armstrong: Yep.
• 27:14
  Don Armstrong: This is twenty-six.
• 27:15
Don Armstrong: A lot can happen between the years.
• 27:18
Don Armstrong: Natural disaster has struck again at Toyota with a typhoon, forcing the car banker to close plants across Japan on August the 7th, just a day after it restored auto output in the wake of a deadly earthquake.
• 27:31
Don Armstrong: As the storm approached, Toyota suspended 17 lines across nine of its 14 assembly plants in Japan for both shifts because of disruption in maritime shipping.
• 27:41
Don Armstrong: Latest suspensions affect the Corolla Camry Prius, RAM 4, and the Sedan Sport and Crossover variants of the Crown Series, as well as the BZ and CHR electric utility vehicles.
• 27:53
Don Armstrong: German auto group Volkswagen plans to overhaul its U.S.
• 27:56
Don Armstrong: strategy with new management and a revised and expanded product lineup, including a new pickup, a company source told Reuters.
• 28:04
Don Armstrong: Marco Schubert, previously held head of sales at Volkswagen's Premium Bram Audi, is moving to the U.S.
• 28:12
Don Armstrong: to replace Kel Gruna, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, who is leaving the company.
• 28:19
  Don Armstrong: You're fired.
• 28:22
  Don Armstrong: One word.
• 28:23
  Don Armstrong: Again?
• 28:24
  Don Armstrong: Again.
• 28:25
  Don Armstrong: Again.
• 28:25
Don Armstrong: Yeah, they're still trying to find their place.
• 28:27
Don Armstrong: I don't understand what they're doing.
• 28:29
Don Armstrong: Dodge, giving the Charger Six Pack a jolt with a 600 horsepower Super B out of a straight six, reviving a legacy badge known for performance.
• 28:41
Don Armstrong: The Super B Launch Edition is the most powerful gasoline-powered charger of this generation, surpassing the 550 horsepower V8 Scat Pack.
• 28:51
Don Armstrong: Super B employs the same high output version of the Hurricane Inline 6 engine, but it squeezes out more power with custom calibration, larger 56 millimeter Garrett turbos, and enhanced thermal capacity.
