- 0:01We believe we have free will. We are confronted with choices
- 0:06and make a decision and carry it out and believe that the
- 0:11decision was made freely by the individual we identify as our
- 0:15self. At the same time, we can
- 0:19recognize the stepwise development, which is called
- 0:22cause and effect, or the law of karma.
- 0:27If we pursue the retrogression from the current decision to
- 0:30each antecedent act or event, however, we can see that there
- 0:36is clearly a line of causality that stretches back step by step
- 0:41to a past we cannot even see, and that we could conclude, if
- 0:46we chose to do so, that indeed there is no such thing as free
- 0:51will in our actions. We can see that each successive
- 0:56level of the manifestation of consciousness appears to provide
- 1:00more flexibility, more freedom of choice, such that on the
- 1:05material plane we can speak of fixed laws of material nature.
- 1:10We identify the laws of thermodynamics, the laws of
- 1:14motion, the law of conservation of energy, the relation between
- 1:19matter and energy, etcetera. As life emerges, we find that
- 1:25the determinations appear to be much less rigid.
- 1:28Yet there are clearly certainly principles or laws that govern
- 1:34the development of life and life forms.
- 1:39The mental nature appears even more fluid, and as we exercise
- 1:43self reflection we seem to have a strong measure of free will.
- 1:49Yet a careful analysis will show that even the decisions we make
- 1:55that appear to be free and random, not bound by a fixed
- 1:59law, are indeed conditioned by circumstances, education,
- 2:04environment, relationships, etcetera.
- 2:09Can we really say that any decision we make is actually
- 2:12free will in operation? Or is it purely the illusion of
- 2:18free will? We are a Nexus or point of
- 2:23awareness of universal nature? Does the drop of water in the
- 2:27ocean have free will? Or is it the ocean itself that
- 2:32may have free will of which the drop partakes without exercising
- 2:36its own independent freedom? If we shift our awareness to
- 2:41further levels of conscious awareness beyond the mind, into
- 2:46the realms where the pure manifesting consciousness of the
- 2:49universal creation resides, we can identify the true mover of
- 2:55all things, the place where free will actually resides.
- 3:00It is through identification with that larger and higher
- 3:04consciousness that we can begin to identify the true nature of
- 3:09free will. In the meantime, it is clear
- 3:13that even our exercise of free will at the human level of
- 3:17existence is part of a larger pattern that plays out
- 3:21inexorably and consistently. Variations that occur through
- 3:26any flexibility we have are actually part of that larger
- 3:31pattern, Sri Aurobindo notes. Quote At least 9/10 of our
- 3:38freedom of will is a palpable fiction that will is created and
- 3:43determined not by its own self existent action at a given
- 3:46moment, but by our past, our heredity, our training, our
- 3:51environment, the whole tremendous complex thing we call
- 3:55karma which is behind us, the whole past action of nature on
- 4:01us and the world, converging in the individual, determining what
- 4:06he is, determining what his will shall be at a given moment, and
- 4:11determining as far as analysis can see, even its action at that
- 4:16moment. The ego associates itself always
- 4:21with its karma and it says I did and I will and I suffer.
- 4:27But if it looks at itself and sees how it was made, it is
- 4:31obliged to say of man as of the animal.
- 4:35Nature did this in me. Nature wills in me, and if it
- 4:40qualifies by saying my nature, that only means nature is self
- 4:46determined in this individual creature.
- 4:49It was the strong perception of this aspect of existence which
- 4:54compelled the Buddhist to declare that all is karma and
- 4:58that there is no self in existence.
- 5:01That the idea of self is only a delusion of the ego mind.
