- 0:24Welcome in to a very exciting episode the scene.
- 0:27I am your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is Zach Mitchell from the Broken Warship
- 0:31Podcast.
- 0:31Zach, welcome to the show.
- 0:33Thank you for having me, Bubba.
- 0:35I'm really excited to be here.
- 0:37I'm thrilled to have you.
- 0:39Big fan of your show and everything that you're doing.
- 0:41So before we before I start gushing too much, why don't you why don't you tell us a little
- 0:47bit about, you know, your your backstory and how the podcast got started?
- 0:52Yeah.
- 0:53So, yeah, I'm Zach Mitchell.
- 0:56And so the the what got, how I kinda started Broken Worship was I really got started getting
- 1:04into the Sioux Falls, like, entertainment scene or whatever.
- 1:10I was a vocalist of a metal band called Rebuild the Fallen.
- 1:16We we were a band for a few years.
- 1:19We put out a a five song EP called Outcasts, and then we we ended up playing, like, 10 local
- 1:30shows, which was a lot of fun, but we, I kind of got older, we had our own things going on,
- 1:38and I still wanted to pursue my mission of, well, my passion of the word, music, of my
- 1:53words and making an impact for others, and I'm a Christian, so I try to point people to
- 2:01Christ.
- 2:03And I saw as I was in, especially the metal, Sioux Falls metal music world, a lot of people,
- 2:13they have a, they have a hunger for community and for love, and a lot of people felt rejected
- 2:23from Christianity and all that because of church trauma or judgment.
- 2:32And I felt called to share God's love and truth in a way that is not represented very well in
- 2:46all not that all churches are bad or anything, but I just I wanted to spread Jesus' love in a
- 2:54way that I I felt I could do a good calling.
- 2:59So it I before the podcast, I wrote this book called Broken Worship, which is a collection of
- 3:08poetry.
- 3:09I did that and did some video did a couple poetry videos.
- 3:14And then and then so I ended up doing so I got six books.
- 3:21I I got Broken Worship, No Darkness and Light, imperfectly spreading a perfect gospel, ground
- 3:30to stand on, saving grace.
- 3:35It's not about you anymore, and my faith will not be safe.
- 3:40But anyways, in within, like, after I did, like, two books, I I started I really got into
- 3:50the podcast world.
- 3:53I like Joe Rogan and some Christian podcasts too, and I just, I felt like I could I wanted
- 4:03to start something that specialized with music and with spreading god's love.
- 4:11And so, yeah, that's kinda how it got started.
- 4:15So
- 4:16That's a beautiful story, Zach.
- 4:19Obviously, you've been called by god.
- 4:22Right?
- 4:23You wouldn't be given this voice and and all of these words coming through you and this mission
- 4:29if it wasn't a calling.
- 4:31Nobody wakes up and goes, you know what?
- 4:33I'm gonna go counter to the mainstream, you know, especially in this day and age.
- 4:37It's not a great time to be a Christian and to be an outward Christian, especially, you know,
- 4:43even to the point where I know on the, at the Golden Globes or whatever it was that they even
- 4:49made a graphic out of it of how many, you know, they thanked the producers, and they thanked
- 4:52these people and god zero times and, like, made a joke about it.
- 4:57And I thought how disgusting.
- 4:58And I didn't grow up in a church, Zach.
- 5:00I I wanna share my my journey to Christ with you.
- 5:04I've always been a spiritual person.
- 5:06Whether I came there through a psychedelic experience or or through any of that.
- 5:11It was really my my time in prison, right?
- 5:14My my two years that I spent in prison and getting in the word and then getting in a
- 5:21church and being in the full gospel because I wanted to play music, getting into the full
- 5:26gospel band and being a part of that community and having a beautiful pastor, pastor Jan, who
- 5:33who allowed me to walk my own path.
- 5:36I did her bible study course, and and she was very adamant about not she was just in the
- 5:42gospels, right?
- 5:43It wasn't it wasn't old testament stuff.
- 5:46It wasn't really be it wasn't Proverbs and all the other things.
- 5:49It was just the gospels.
- 5:50It was just the teachings of Christ according to the disciples and the gospel, right?
- 5:55So, it it really brought me to, oh, a lot of these things and a lot of my thoughts on what
- 6:01the church and Christianity was had been distorted by my perception of what other other
- 6:08human beings' perception of it was and what they had built around their own churches.
- 6:13Right?
- 6:14And, obviously, we've all seen the the massive mega churches and all of these things and the
- 6:19powerful speakers on stage and the and the praise and the speaking in tongues and all of
- 6:26these things.
- 6:27None of that resonated with me.
- 6:29I found god in a prison cell.
- 6:31I found god and I found Jesus and that love, that Christ love.
- 6:36Right?
- 6:37That agape love.
- 6:38I found that all alone in a place where I had been shuttered away from society.
- 6:45Right?
- 6:46So I have a very deep and personal relationship with who I call god, and my god doesn't have to
- 6:54be the god that you say lives in that building.
- 6:57My god doesn't live in a building.
- 6:59How how small thinking.
- 7:02What human could how and I hate that I say he a lot.
- 7:06Right?
- 7:06Because we're so silly.
- 7:07And I personify this energy and this feeling like god is some man in the clouds.
- 7:13Right?
- 7:13What a ridiculous thought.
- 7:15God is energy.
- 7:17God is love.
- 7:18Love is energy.
- 7:19Right?
- 7:20And that's that's my journey.
- 7:22And I say that this podcasting is how god is speaking through us every day with people that
- 7:28I don't even know if they're Christians.
- 7:30Right?
- 7:31And I don't I don't necessarily care.
- 7:33And I don't necessarily care that listeners of this aren't Christians and and aren't, you
- 7:39know, don't have the same beliefs in what god is to me.
- 7:45I know in my heart, not in my mind, in my heart and soul who God is to me.
- 7:53What God is to me.
- 7:55What Christ was teaching us.
- 7:57The, you know, and without getting down some rabbit holes of the thirty three thirty three
- 8:04vertebrae and the, you know, the kind of, you know, what it could mean.
- 8:10I do believe that, you know, Jesus was a real person, but I also think that it was only
- 8:15because it was a physical embodiment of something that they couldn't that that god that
- 8:21this energy couldn't teach us otherwise.
- 8:24And what a great job it has done, right, to give us these things.
- 8:29I just think that anything that is of man can be corrupted by man.
- 8:34And that's why church in the, in the kind of, you know, the mainstream sense of it never
- 8:43resonated with me.
- 8:44It was never big enough to encapsulate what I believed in as god.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52You know, when you're speaking about prison, it brought me back last week, I was talking with a
- 9:03vet, and he he I he we're we're friends on Facebook, and he asked me, you know, I'd like
- 9:10to talk sit down and talk with you sometime because, you know, I have PTSD and, like, I I
- 9:20just you think I he wants to have faith.
- 9:23He does, but he's lost it.
- 9:25And he just asked me, like, where do where would you start in the bible?
- 9:31And I I said, you know, I think the most important thing is to I said, you know, I would
- 9:40it's a big book and there's a lot to it.
- 9:42I would say, just start with the words of Jesus.
- 9:46And I also said, you know, I you've obviously lived a lot more life than I have.
- 9:54I've had my struggles, but I I said it's alright to be angry with God.
- 10:01There's a there's a story in the old testament where so where god allowed someone to wrestle
- 10:10with him.
- 10:11Not that he thought that not that he god was gonna lose or whatever, but he allowed a I
- 10:18believe that God wants the real you.
- 10:21And I think I I try to call Christians to go back to the fundamentals of the greatest
- 10:30commandment, which is loving God with all that you are and loving your neighbor as yourself.
- 10:36All the all the God all all the commandments are summed up by that.
- 10:41It's pretty simple.
- 10:43We less of us and more of God, and and so that's where I'm at.
- 10:50So
- 10:51The native Americans of our of the land that we live on.
- 10:55Right?
- 10:55The the ancient peoples, the the ancestral peoples of this place that we now call home.
- 11:01You know, I'm in South Dakota as well.
- 11:03They say, And the natives over the entire breath of The United States and probably into
- 11:11Mexico as well all have very similar sayings, very even very similar in the pronunciation of
- 11:18it.
- 11:18Right?
- 11:19So this thought that we are all related is what it means.
- 11:24Right?
- 11:24That thought is not something that came from the Christian faith.
- 11:29Right?
- 11:29That that that was already there.
- 11:31It was and that's beyond just human beings.
- 11:35We are related to the animal nation.
- 11:38We are related to the plant nation.
- 11:40We must treat this mother Earth the same way that we would treat our own children or our own
- 11:46mother or our own father.
- 11:49Right?
- 11:49And and something that you hit on there is that, it's it's okay to be angry at god.
- 11:56It's okay to be angry.
- 11:59It's figuring out how to transmute that energy because God is energy.
- 12:05Right?
- 12:05And the longer that they try to disprove God with science, the more that they prove the
- 12:11existence of God through science, that it's okay because god is not up here.
- 12:19Anger is such a a visceral human emotion.
- 12:23Right, Zach?
- 12:24We feel it, and it's a thought.
- 12:26And it's a thought, but God isn't up here.
- 12:29God is right here.
- 12:30God is inside of our heart.
- 12:31God is inside of our spirit.
- 12:33It it is around us, and that's why we are taught that it's okay to be angry.
- 12:40It's it's figuring out through these teachings how do you transmute that energy?
- 12:45How do you bring that energy through the whole walk of Christ and then throughout the top of
- 12:51your crown and through these things and to transmute that energy back into love.
- 12:57That is what god is.
- 12:59That is the walk of Christ.
- 13:01That is the teachings of Christ.
- 13:03And not that I'm some preacher or anything, but I'm out here walking it every single day, and
- 13:10I'm just having conversations with my friends.
- 13:13If someone else wants to listen to this conversation and be moved by it, then that is
- 13:18their own personal journey, Zach.
- 13:20And that's what I love about your writing these books and you're on the podcast and you're
- 13:24sharing your story and you're sharing all of this.
- 13:28You're sharing god.
- 13:30This is how god is speaking.
- 13:31This is how god is healing the world through technology and through these things because
- 13:36each one of us sharing that expression of god, right?
- 13:40We are all, if we are all built in that image, in that likeness, then we are all the we are
- 13:48all required to share our experience with one another so that we may know God.
- 13:54We may know God through knowing each other.
- 13:58Amen.
- 13:59Yeah.
- 14:00There's a lot of truth in that.
- 14:02I, yeah, I I definitely agree.
- 14:07So
- 14:08And I and I I already knew that.
- 14:11Right?
- 14:11And we do know that because we are walking in this.
- 14:14You wouldn't have this podcast and be putting yourself out there if you didn't believe that
- 14:19to be true.
- 14:20Right?
- 14:21You're not gonna go and start a podcast talking about broken people and and broken faith and
- 14:27people who have have lost their way but want to call you wouldn't do this to get famous.
- 14:34You're not in a podcast to to make some kind of name for yourself.
- 14:38You're doing it because you're called, obviously.
- 14:42Obviously.
- 14:43And and I'm saying this without ego to it, without any of that nonsense because, like, we
- 14:49are walking in it, Zach, every single day.
- 14:52I have multiple conversations, and I jump in these different groups and things.
- 14:56I am not planning any of this.
- 14:59I am merely waking up.
- 15:01I pray on my altar, and my god might be different than yours.
- 15:05My god doesn't require me to go to a church and to use water to bless myself with a with a, you
- 15:12know, what are they what are they called?
- 15:13The genuflection.
- 15:14Right?
- 15:14My my god my god speaks through sage and and Palo Santo and the smells of and the sights and
- 15:24the feeling of my altar and in those quiet, quiet moments and in my reading of my books.
- 15:30And I've read all the words of the Christian bible.
- 15:33I would really like to learn Greek and to be able to read the the Bible, as it's been
- 15:41brought to us now in the original Greek text.
- 15:44Right?
- 15:45Reading a lot of this because I think so much of it gets lost in translation.
- 15:49And that's why we have even those who call themselves Christians, right, and who have gone
- 15:54to church their whole life, I believe that's why the some of them have strayed so far away
- 15:59because the the language has been corrupted.
- 16:02Right?
- 16:02And to to make it seem as if these words mean something that they don't.
- 16:08And it's why the Christian faith and the words and the KJV may not speak with everyone because
- 16:16they've been corrupted by the thoughts of man and not necessarily by the words of God.
- 16:24Yeah.
- 16:25So I I would I've experienced miracles from God.
- 16:33I I was born with the speech impediment, and I wasn't even supposed to be able to speak.
- 16:41But my parents' faith and hard work, I went through speech therapy, and I went from, like,
- 16:53my professionals try to tell my parents to teach me sign language to, I was screaming on
- 16:59stage in a metal band and now I'm sharing my words through my poetry and writing.
- 17:06So I believe in miracles and I do personally believe in the God of the Bible, I just, I know
- 17:16so many people fall victim to self and to like selfish ways.
- 17:27We see that in the corruption of government, all the wealthy business leaders, ego.
- 17:37And I think, I truly try to live my life loving God and loving people.
- 17:44It's I think it's a simple it's not easy, but it's simple.
- 17:50Right.
- 17:50Right.
- 17:51The the path is very hard, but it's very it's very simple.
- 17:55And it's hard because of our human traits.
- 17:59It's hard because of ego.
- 18:01It's hard because people don't like to take accountability for their own actions and their
- 18:07own choices.
- 18:08And they're they're so it's very hard to get out of their own way.
- 18:13Right?
- 18:13It was very hard for me.
- 18:15Zach, I've been I've been alive for thirty eight years.
- 18:18I'll be 39 in May.
- 18:20It took me a really long time to work through this.
- 18:22I haven't been in prison for eight years.
- 18:25Right?
- 18:25Nine years.
- 18:26It's been a long time since I was there, and I'm just coming around to a lot of these a lot
- 18:32of the knowing that I gained has been in the last few months because I see miracles every
- 18:37day.
- 18:38And I think that everyone sees miracles every day.
- 18:41What are why what everyone has faith.
- 18:45What makes you think that you're going to wake up every night when you lay your head down to
- 18:49go to sleep?
- 18:51What makes you think and what makes you believe that you are going to wake up?
- 18:56Faith.
- 18:58Nothing other than that.
- 18:59Nothing other than that can make you have that feeling that if I lay down and I close my eyes
- 19:04in this place and I stay here, that I am going to be here when I open my eyes again.
- 19:12What is that besides faith?
- 19:14So when I hear someone say that they don't have any faith, well, that's just not true.
- 19:18And if you're going to lie to yourself every day and to live that lie and to operate in that
- 19:24thing, well, it's gonna take some time then to undo all of that to get to a place where you
- 19:30not only have faith in in the greater god that's around you and surrounding us, but that
- 19:37you would have faith in yourself to be that same creator for your own life.
- 19:43And that's really the teaching teachings of Christ is that, yeah, not only do you have to
- 19:48have faith in God, but you could create all of these things.
- 19:51Why are you asking me for miracles when you could do them yourself?
- 19:55That's what Jesus was trying to teach them.
- 19:57Why do you keep asking me to perform miracles for you when you yourself could go do them?
- 20:03You are capable of all of these things that I am capable of.
- 20:06I am not any different than you.
- 20:08I am man as well.
- 20:11You are sons of God.
- 20:13You are daughters of God.
- 20:14We are all God.
- 20:18Well and I think, I think it well, my biggest, Jesus taught and showed humility and self
- 20:31sacrifice, and I believe and this is lacking in the Christian, in a lot of Christianity, we're
- 20:42not seeing humble pastors.
- 20:45We're not seeing humble humble we're seeing churches get richer, try by getting more and
- 20:54more people in, and we're not seeing a bunch of self sacrifice, putting your, lifting up your
- 21:04neighbor.
- 21:05We're trying to make ourselves as rich and famous as possible.
- 21:10And, we're we we see in this Christian nation, we're seeing a lot of eagles in yourself.
- 21:21Well, and and I think that it's very easy, and people are gonna look at us, and there's going
- 21:27to be people that watch this episode and be like, how dare they?
- 21:30Look at the listen to the blasphemy of these people.
- 21:34He said he was god.
- 21:36No.
- 21:36I said we are god.
- 21:38If you listen and listen with your heart to the words that are coming out of my mouth, I don't
- 21:43these are not my thoughts.
- 21:45This is what has been taught to us.
- 21:47And I'm not telling you things that I know up here.
- 21:50I'm telling you things that I know right here.
- 21:52I'm telling you things because they have it has happened to me.
- 21:55It happens to me every day.
- 21:57Zach, I'd love to share a quick story with you.
- 22:00I, I go on long walks every day.
- 22:02That's kind of my thing.
- 22:04I like to walk two two miles at least a day.
- 22:06That's kind of the goal.
- 22:08And, yesterday, I woke up way too early.
- 22:11And, you know, I was up at, like, 03:30, 3AM.
- 22:14What a what a fantastic time to arise in the morning.
- 22:17But, I went for a earlier walk, and I had a friend contacted me, and we were just talking
- 22:24on the phone, and the sun was yet coming up, and I didn't make my usual turn.
- 22:28Right?
- 22:28I didn't make the loop that I usually do.
- 22:30I just kept going.
- 22:32And as I'm walking and I'm looking around and I'm checking my surroundings and I'm checking
- 22:37the clock because I like to be there when my wife and children leave in the morning so that
- 22:41I can hug and kiss them.
- 22:42And I I was kinda like, man, we're getting pretty far away.
- 22:47Like, we better turn around.
- 22:48We have to turn around soon if we're going to, you know, make it back.
- 22:53I was thinking I could make a different loop, and that path wasn't quite there.
- 22:56And I looked down, and I don't know if you know, like, the little garden not a sculpture,
- 23:03but, like, a little metal, you know, ornament.
- 23:06Right?
- 23:07And, Zach, I looked down, and there's a little metal butterfly on the road right in that
- 23:13space.
- 23:14And I said, well, then it is definitely time to turn around.
- 23:18And those are the signs.
- 23:20And, Zach, I got back to the same place that I always watch the sun come up on my regular
- 23:24walks.
- 23:25And right as I got there, the first rays of the sun are crusting the horizon.
- 23:31And I arrived back home with ten minutes to spend with my wife and children, and, like,
- 23:37those are miracles.
- 23:39The acknowledging those as miracles is the is the very basic step.
- 23:44I have had my life physically saved.
- 23:46Physically saved.
- 23:48Zach, I was doing 80 miles an hour.
- 23:50I've been smoking meth for days on the way back from Reno with 20 pounds of pot in the back of
- 23:55the Tahoe.
- 23:57My my passenger asleep in the passenger seat with me, and I went off the road.
- 24:02I woke up when strips.
- 24:05I came to as I hit the rumble strips, and I had just enough presence of mind to not overcorrect
- 24:11the wheel and to not go through the reflector, but to just miss it, and the reflector clipped
- 24:18off my side mirror.
- 24:20My side mirror that's this big, Zach, I should have been dead, but god saved me that day.
- 24:28And I wasn't smart enough to listen to him then.
- 24:30I made it home.
- 24:31I sold all that pot.
- 24:33I made a bunch of money.
- 24:34And you know what I did?
- 24:36I was trying to go right back there.
- 24:38And I had been home smoking meth the whole time then for another couple of days.
- 24:42Right?
- 24:43And I had left.
- 24:44I had left town, Zach.
- 24:46I had already left.
- 24:47Well, I got to Gillette, realized I didn't have my debit card went.
- 24:51We gotta turn around.
- 24:53Turned around.
- 24:54Came back.
- 24:54Smoke some more meth.
- 24:57Left.
- 24:58It was at that point on the way back out of town that time that we were pulled over.
- 25:05And I didn't have all the pot on me then.
- 25:07I was going out to pick it up.
- 25:10But God said, child, if you won't listen, then I will make you listen.
- 25:20And he sat me down.
- 25:22And even then, I didn't wanna listen.
- 25:24Right?
- 25:24Even then.
- 25:26And when they came and raided my house a few days later and they found five pounds of pot
- 25:32and and some more, you know, you know, wax, right, the the concentrates.
- 25:37And and they they, I thought I was going to jail then.
- 25:43Right?
- 25:44I I'm in my kitchen going, take me.
- 25:47They said this that's not how it's gonna work.
- 25:50They left me.
- 25:52And out on bail, I sat for four months, you know, while they were like, oh, well, he'll
- 25:57turn in some meth dealer or this or that.
- 25:59I didn't know any to begin with, but it's not in my place to, command someone else's journey
- 26:06in that way.
- 26:07And, I went to Mexico, and I was in Mexico for a year.
- 26:11And God allowed me to go on that journey so that I could be humbled, so that I could go see
- 26:18how people in other areas were living their lives.
- 26:22And and and, obviously, if you don't know about, about Mexico, but they are very
- 26:29Catholic.
- 26:29Right?
- 26:30They are a very religious a very religious, culture and peoples, and I was humbled by the
- 26:38love that we were shown.
- 26:39We we should have never I I was treated with the the greatest grace that I've ever received
- 26:45in my life by these people.
- 26:47My son was born there.
- 26:49My daughter was conceived there, and it was at that point that that god told me that it's time
- 26:55to go home.
- 26:56It's time to go back and and and you need to go and to be now that you've been humbled, you
- 27:05need to go settle your debt, and you need to go and fix your life for the sake of these
- 27:12children.
- 27:14And I didn't know then that he was setting me on this path now, but I do now know that this
- 27:20is my this is my path to walk.
- 27:23Right?
- 27:24And I say that it's to start a million podcasters because I believe, Zach, with
- 27:29everything inside of me that this is how God is speaking.
- 27:33God doesn't speak with a great voice from above and say, listen to me.
- 27:39No.
- 27:40He sends other human beings.
- 27:42He sends other expressions of himself that you will listen to and that will speak to your
- 27:48heart to heal you so that you may go and heal others.
- 27:52And that's why I'm so incredibly proud of you.
- 27:56And I know we're just meeting here right now, but I'm so incredibly proud of you for living
- 28:02in this.

- 28:34right, in the metal music and being in those places.
