- 0:00You're running out of power. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chandler.
- 0:07But 1155 to upgrade your mental game today by telling yourself a
- 0:11better story. Because the most important story
- 0:13you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:15Likes, follows, stars, comments or subscriptions.
- 0:18Whatever way your platform gives you to interact with content
- 0:20like this helps others find these messages too.
- 0:23Here's the upgrade. You think you need more energy,
- 0:26but upgraded thinking knows the real question is how you're
- 0:28using the energy you have. Here's the story.
- 0:33Voyager 2, the spacecraft launched by NASA in 1977, is now
- 0:38more than 13 billion miles from Earth, sending back data from
- 0:41interstellar space, a place no other spacecraft has reached.
- 0:46But it's dying. It's plutonium power source
- 0:49loses about four watts every year, and every Watt lost means
- 0:52another instrument goes dark. So this summer, the team at JPL,
- 0:57the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at NASA, tried something they
- 1:00called The Big Bang. In one moment, they shut down
- 1:02certain powered parts, including an old tape recorder.
- 1:05They kept running for years, mostly for its leftover heat.
- 1:08And they swapped in lower energy alternatives to keep the
- 1:11critical systems warm enough to survive the cold of deep space.
- 1:15If anything went wrong, there was no undo button.
- 1:18Commands take about 19 hours to reach the spacecraft one way.
- 1:24They sent the instructions and waited two days.
- 1:27It worked. They bought at least one more
- 1:30year for the three instruments still doing real science out
- 1:33there. 50 years of scientific data from a spacecraft
- 1:36originally expected only run for five years.
- 1:39The project manager Suzanne Dodd said quote every.
- 1:42What saved now is a decision about what data humanity still
- 1:46gets to learn from out there. In quote they didn't have enough
- 1:49power to run everything, so they made a decision.
- 1:52They turned off the things that was using power with limited
- 1:55ROI, and they saved the power for the thing that was still
- 1:58teaching them something new. How does this apply to you?
- 2:02You have a finite amount of energy today.
- 2:05It's draining whether you like it or not.
- 2:08And you're running instruments right now that do nothing but
- 2:10drain your power. The worry, the scrolling, the
- 2:14old grudge, the argument you keep rehearsing.
- 2:17You don't need more watts. You don't need more power.
- 2:21You need to decide how you're using what you have.
- 2:24You're a steward of your daily energy.
- 2:27You need to decide what they keep alive.
- 2:30Turn off what is uselessly draining energy.
- 2:33Shut down the unimportant There's an opportunity cost
- 2:36activities. When energy is used in one area,
- 2:40it can't be used in another. Save the power for what still
- 2:43sends something back. The better story to tell
- 2:47yourself is I get to decide what my energy keeps alive.
- 2:53You are a renewable resource, but not an endless one.
- 2:57A 49 year old machine kept alive by people who refused to let it
- 3:01go because they decided the data was worth it.
- 3:04You get to make that same decision today.
- 3:07Not about a spacecraft, but you tell me a story of stewarding
- 3:12your power to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:14Send someone a text and tell them guard your power.
