- 0:25Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:30Amen. Amen.
- 0:31Open your Bibles to two places, would you?
- 0:33Joshua chapter 4 and First Samuel Chapter 7 Joshua chapter
- 0:394, First Samuel Chapter 7. Today is the day.
- 0:43Now we will complete this series that I've entitled greater.
- 0:47It's the word that the Lord has given me for us, for our church
- 0:51for the new year greater and we've looked at various aspects
- 0:55of greater. That's a little
- 0:56counterintuitive. We started with little by
- 0:59little, then we moved on to faith, then abiding.
- 1:03Last week was Sacrifice, and today our title of our study is
- 1:08Greater Remembrance. God wants you to remember His
- 1:13faithfulness. Or let me say it a different
- 1:15way, God does not want you to forget His faithfulness.
- 1:20No matter what you're facing today.
- 1:23I'm sure you have seen this in your own life, where even the
- 1:27smallest of things can cloud and block our vision of God's
- 1:32faithfulness. Now, of course, we get it.
- 1:35Where big things do that, where we're just heavy stuff, they,
- 1:39they distract us, take us off track.
- 1:41But little things can do that too.
- 1:43Here, here we are. You know, when I take my glasses
- 1:45off, I can't see you very well, but I can see the room is
- 1:47filled. Hundreds of people here.
- 1:49But I have these hands here and they're not very big.
- 1:52If I took these small hands and I cover my eyes, I can't see
- 1:56anything. Nothing.
- 1:57Everything. My whole vision is blocked just
- 2:00by. I mean, I could do that if I
- 2:02wanted to, If I wanted to hurt myself, I could do that with my
- 2:04fingers and I can breathe. And now here I am, I can't see
- 2:07anything. And life can be like that, where
- 2:10the circumstances of life, both large and small, have a tendency
- 2:16to block our vision of God's faithfulness.
- 2:19And it is God's will that you not forget his faithfulness.
- 2:24It is God's desire that you remember all that he has done.
- 2:29Or Even so, let's put it this way, God's past faithfulness
- 2:34demands our present trust. I mean, when we like.
- 2:38I want you to answer out loud here.
- 2:40Can you think of a moment yes or no?
- 2:42Can you think of a moment in your life and any time that God
- 2:46has been faithful. OK, you guys over here, I want
- 2:50to hear you. You guys did good.
- 2:52So I didn't even ask the question.
- 2:54How do you know what I said? Can you guys think the whole
- 2:57Church of a time of God's faithfulness?
- 3:00How about many times? Have you a tendency to forget
- 3:04from time to time? I know we do.
- 3:07We have a tendency to forget the things we're supposed to
- 3:10remember and remember the things that we want to forget.
- 3:13That's just life. And so God wants you today as
- 3:17you head into a new year. I know it's just a calendar.
- 3:20I know it's just a date and a number, but it's very
- 3:22significant as you head into a new year that you remember the
- 3:26faithfulness of God, that you not forget.
- 3:30You know, even the Bible has a verse in in it for us people
- 3:33like me where the Bible says even when we are faithless, he
- 3:38remains faithful. It's in first John.
- 3:41We'll be there short soon enough in our study in first John on on
- 3:45our midweek Bible study, where I'm sure we'll spend a whole
- 3:48night just focused on the significance of God's
- 3:50faithfulness, even with the backdrop of our unfaithfulness.
- 3:55When when you look back on your past, there's a tendency to
- 3:58remember your failures and your mistakes and your regrets.
- 4:02It's just normal human condition.
- 4:04But God, he's saying to us today, when you think back, I
- 4:07don't want you to remember your failures.
- 4:09I want you to remember my faithfulness.
- 4:12I want you to focus and be very laser focused on faithfulness.
- 4:17At least two times in the Old Testament, God instructs the
- 4:21children of Israel to do something practical with just
- 4:25ordinary stones to help their memory.
- 4:28The first one I asked you to open in Joshua chapter 4.
- 4:31Would you turn there with me? Joshua chapter 4?
- 4:34It's a momentous occasion in the life of the nation of Israel.
- 4:38They have just passed through the Jordan River miraculously on
- 4:46dry ground. They're about to take on all
- 4:50that God has given them, the things that their grandparents
- 4:52and their parents were telling them, that God is going to give
- 4:55us the land He's promised us. They're just about ready to take
- 4:59it. And God miraculously gives them
- 5:02this time across the Jordan. You see, they didn't get to
- 5:04enjoy or see or experience the Red Sea.
- 5:08They they didn't live that out. Their parents lived that out or
- 5:10their grandparents lived that out, but they didn't live it
- 5:12out. And so here they are coming to
- 5:15their own miraculous time. And notice what happens in verse
- 5:191 of chapter 4. It says, and it came to pass
- 5:23when all the people had completely crossed over the
- 5:25Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua saying, take for
- 5:29yourselves 12. Men from the people, one man
- 5:33from every tribe, and command them saying, take for
- 5:37yourselves. 12. I want you to say this word with
- 5:39me, 12 Stones. I want you to.
- 5:42This is very important, ordinary rocks.
- 5:45Just take 12 Stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan,
- 5:50from the place where the priest feet stood firm, and you shall
- 5:56carry them over, over with you and leave them in the lodging
- 5:59place where you lodge tonight. Joshua called the 12 men whom he
- 6:04had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every
- 6:07tribe. And Joshua said, crossover
- 6:09before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the
- 6:12Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder
- 6:17according to the number of the tribes of the children of
- 6:20Israel. So we didn't have 12 men from
- 6:22the 12 tribes get us stones. But Pastor Everett went down to
- 6:25Home Depot and got 25 bags, put them up on his shoulders, took
- 6:29him to his car and set this up for us today as a memorial stone
- 6:34for you before you leave. This is what they were given
- 6:38instruction. I want you to take some stones
- 6:39from the Jordan and and I want you to set them up a very
- 6:44ordinary stone, nothing special about it.
- 6:46I want you to get some rocks each one of the tribes because
- 6:49you represent the nation. I want you to get a specific, I
- 6:52want you to get a rock and I want you to set it up.
- 6:54And it says in verse 6, this is the reason that this may be a
- 6:58sign among you when your children ask in time to come
- 7:02saying, why did what do these stones mean to you?
- 7:07And you'll answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut
- 7:10off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord when it
- 7:12crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut
- 7:15off. And these stones shall be a
- 7:17memorial to the children of Israel forever for the sake of
- 7:23these rocks. It was when the kids asked, now
- 7:25I'm going around greeting and one of the kids, what was this
- 7:27question before even the Bible study, What did he say?
- 7:30What are those rocks for? They generate, they generate
- 7:33questions. They generate this, this desire
- 7:36to know what is it for? What is this Dad?
- 7:39I don't remember the Jordan. I don't remember the Red Sea.
- 7:42I've heard the stories, but I didn't live through it.
- 7:45And you get the opportunity to continue to tell your kids like
- 7:48some of you, I think you can't take them here because we only
- 7:51have enough for the people here. But go to Home Depot and buy a
- 7:53bag like ever it did. You can do this and you can set
- 7:56up something for you. Some of you need to do this.
- 7:59My kids are too old, so it's not going to work for my kids, but
- 8:01yours it will like not telling your kids what you're doing.
- 8:05Leave a pile of rocks, like a really significant pile of rocks
- 8:08in the middle of the living room in front of the TV or by the
- 8:11video games and just leave them. Don't don't say anything.
- 8:14Just do it and wait. I mean, I hope they don't just
- 8:17kick them over or throw them at you like they you're going to
- 8:20hear some in the house. Hey, mom, what are these rocks
- 8:24doing here? And it gives you an opportunity
- 8:27like you, you have to change your way of thinking to engage
- 8:29with your kids. You know, the world doesn't get
- 8:32our kids. They don't own our kids.
- 8:33You know that, right? The world does not own your
- 8:35kids. God owns your kids, and he's
- 8:37given you opportunity to raise them.
- 8:39And so we're not just going to abdicate our kids to video games
- 8:42and to whatever the novels are. With a stack of rocks, you can
- 8:46get your kids attention. You can start talking about the
- 8:49things of the Lord. One of the decisions that Marie
- 8:51and I made with our kids is that we chose purposely at different
- 8:56stages of their lives to give them the age appropriate
- 9:01description of our lives before Christ.
- 9:04Because we got saved in our 20s, we had a lot of a lot of
- 9:07testimony that goes with that, mostly mine, but really for both
- 9:11of us. And we just wanted our kids to
- 9:13know what God did in their lives.
- 9:15What God, The kind of family I think of my, you know, we had
- 9:18our oldest son as teenage parents, but then on my middle
- 9:21son and my daughter, they come along.
- 9:24They would have never existed had God not saved us because
- 9:27Marie and I wouldn't be together.
- 9:29That would have never happened. And over and over and over
- 9:33again. While we haven't used rocks in
- 9:35that way, I do want to encourage you a word from the Lord.
- 9:39Engage your kids. Talk to them about what God has
- 9:42done. Give them your story.
- 9:45Why? Because you're prepping them for
- 9:46their story. Like my kids didn't grow up in
- 9:49the same home that I did. My home is very different.
- 9:52It's a very different home. Same with my wife, very
- 9:55different upbringing. So they don't have the kind of
- 9:58experiences that we did growing up.
- 10:01I basically came home to an empty house.
- 10:03That's how I grew up. They have a name for that and
- 10:05some of you probably were too. They called us latch key kids
- 10:10and I had a key to the house. Even if I didn't have a key to
- 10:13the house, I could always climb in the window.
- 10:14I knew how to get in and I basically was home alone from
- 10:19the 5th grade all the way through high school.
- 10:22And it just wasn't good for me. It just wasn't good.
- 10:26It didn't end well for me because you factor in a lot of
- 10:29all those temptations and such and absent parents, it was just
- 10:32didn't work out for me at all. But God knew what He was doing,
- 10:36and my kids needed to hear that story because we're going to be
- 10:38there for them, even if we both work, even if we're going to
- 10:41make different choices with our kids so that we can help them
- 10:44along the way and do a little bit better or maybe a lot better
- 10:46than our parents did. I'm sure that's a lot of the
- 10:48testimony here. You just want to do a little bit
- 10:50better. You just want to make a little
- 10:52bit of changes. And so these rocks for the
- 10:54children of Israel were for the kids, but they were for the
- 10:57grandkids. They were for everyone.
- 10:59Why the rocks? Why the rocks?
- 11:01Well, let me tell you, God did a great work at the Jordan.
- 11:05We didn't get here by ourselves. And from the Jordan we go back
- 11:08to Moses, and from Moses we go all the way back to Genesis.
- 11:10And the whole word of God becomes a testimony of what?
- 11:13God's faithfulness, God's faithfulness.
- 11:17Turn with me now to first Samuel Chapter 7.
- 11:20First Samuel Chapter 7, different time in the life of
- 11:25the children of Israel. This is through the life of
- 11:28young Samuel. You know, young Samuel, Young
- 11:30Samuel was the boy that was the miracle child.
- 11:33Hannah couldn't have a child, but God gave her a son and she
- 11:37dedicated that son. She told God, if you give me a
- 11:39son, I'll give them back to you. And so for Hannah's baby
- 11:42dedication, she brought Samuel to the church and left him
- 11:46there. We don't do that here.
- 11:49I'll hold your kid for a minute or two and then you're taking
- 11:52them. But this was a special, you
- 11:55know, Samuel was a miracle kid, absolute miracle kid.
- 12:00And now we have him as an adult through all his experiences, he
- 12:03grew up under the leadership of Eli.
- 12:05Eli was a rotten priest and so was his kids.
- 12:08So you read the testimony, they were rotten.
- 12:10They were they did not represent the Lord.
- 12:12And under rotten leadership, the nation of Israel became
- 12:15idolatrous. Now I'm only developing a
- 12:17portion of this text. I've already talked to First
- 12:19Samuel and Joshua. Those studies verse by verse are
- 12:22all up on the on the web or on the app that you I go probably
- 12:26in depth. I didn't look, but I'm sure I go
- 12:28more in depth on some of these things.
- 12:29But I just want to give you the backdrop of Samuel coming on the
- 12:32scene here under the week, beggarly, idolatrous, lack of
- 12:37commitment, leadership of Eli and his sons.
- 12:40The people became idolatrous. Their hearts veered from the
- 12:43Lord. They were rebels.
- 12:44They were not worshippers of God.
- 12:46But God placed Samuel there not only to see the bad, but to lead
- 12:51people in the good. And that's what we pick up now
- 12:53in Chapter 7 and verse one. They the nation just got the Ark
- 12:59of the Covenant back. It was stolen by the arch enemy
- 13:03of the Israelites, the Philistines.
- 13:05They had just got it back and notice in verse one it says, let
- 13:11me get there with you. It says, Then the men of Kirjath
- 13:16Jerium came and took the ark of the Lord, and brought it into
- 13:19the House of Abinadab on the hill, and consecrated Eliezer
- 13:23his son to keep the ark of the Lord.
- 13:27So it was that the ark remained in Kirjat Jirium a long time.
- 13:31It was there 20 years, and all the House of Israel lamented
- 13:35after the Lord. Then Samuel spoke to all the
- 13:39House of Israel, saying, If you return to the Lord with all your
- 13:42hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the asterisks
- 13:46from among you, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve
- 13:49Him only, and He will deliver you from the hand of the
- 13:52Philistines. So the children of Israel put
- 13:55away the Baals and the asteroths, and serve the Lord
- 13:58only. And Samuel said, Gather all
- 14:01Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.
- 14:05So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water and poured it
- 14:08out before the Lord. And they fasted that day and
- 14:11said, There we have sinned against the Lord.
- 14:13And Samuel judge the children of Israel at Mizpah.
- 14:19Samuel takes the leadership here new direction and he calls the
- 14:22people to repent and say you really want to come back to the
- 14:24Lord, then come back, but come back the right way.
- 14:28Again, I see a whole Bible study in this that I can.
- 14:31I'll probably develop later. If you want to come back to the
- 14:33Lord, you got to do it the right way.
- 14:34That's probably going to be the title.
- 14:36That's the key. So let me just say it for you
- 14:37today, if you've starting a new year and you're like, man, I
- 14:41need to come back to the Lord. I want to come back to the Lord.
- 14:43I've strayed too far. I I've wasted too many years.
- 14:46Great. Let me tell you this, You have
- 14:48to do it the right way. You go.
- 14:50Well, wait a minute, pastor, what's the right way?
- 14:52Well, let's look at a little bit of what Samuel said.
- 14:54First of all, notice he says if you want to return to the Lord
- 14:57with if you return to the Lord with all your hearts, then put
- 15:00away the foreign gods. You got to put away the foreign
- 15:03gods. I, I know that we, we identify
- 15:07idolatry as little statues and such, and certainly they were
- 15:10using little statues, but that's not the point.
- 15:13The statue is not the point. It's your heart's the point.
- 15:16It's where's your heart and who's your worship?
- 15:18Who are you worshipping? Because notice what he says
- 15:20next. Not only do you need to put the
- 15:22false worship aside, but but you also, you need to prepare your
- 15:25hearts. The reason why you wandered away
- 15:29and the reason why you got into that and the reason why you're
- 15:31fornicating and the reason why you're lying.
- 15:34And the we all of that is because it's a heart issue.
- 15:38It's not a church issue. It's not a pastor issue.
- 15:41It's not a Bible study issue. It's not a doctrine issue.
- 15:45Those are all secondary to your heart relationship with God.
- 15:50It's your heart you left, as Paul would tell the church in
- 15:54Ephesus, your first love. You got to get your heart right
- 15:57with the Lord. And heart in the Bible, both the
- 16:00Old and the New Testament, often refers to the totality of who
- 16:03you are, but it also speaks of emotions.
- 16:09You got to get your emotions in check.
- 16:11You know, temptations, they become very attractive when you
- 16:14start to like them and want them.
- 16:17It's an emotional. Ask anybody that's an
- 16:19advertisement, they'll tell you they want to prick the emotions.
- 16:23Because when they got the emotions, guess what?
- 16:24They got a you. And when they got you, guess
- 16:28what else they have? Your money.
- 16:30More money, more money, more money, more emotions.
- 16:34Pay attention. If you watch commercials you see
- 16:36that it's nonsense, has nothing to do with the product, they
- 16:39just want to prick your emotions.
- 16:41I was watching an ad recently, it was in a news article I was
- 16:44reading and they said Chevy did it again and they had been
- 16:49making these 10 minute little advertisements for different
- 16:52trucks that they have. I'm not into Chevy or into
- 16:55trucks, but I am into good storytelling and so I watched
- 16:59the video. It made me cry.
- 17:03It was so nostalgic. Like they got me.
- 17:06I'm not buying a Chevy. I don't know what your view is,
- 17:08but like it got me. Whoever put this together, super
- 17:12talented in communicating this nostalgia surrounding a truck.
- 17:18For goodness sake, it was a truck.
- 17:22Did I say what it was a truck? It's a heart issue when you walk
- 17:27away from the Lord, it's a heart issue.
- 17:30You got to prepare your hearts, get rid of idolatry, prepare
- 17:33your hearts and then notice the next thing, gather together and
- 17:35pray. They asked Samuel to pray, but
- 17:38really the instructions for all of us to pray.
- 17:41You want to come back to the Lord.
- 17:42You need to amp up your relational time with the Lord
- 17:45through prayer. Not only that, notice what
- 17:47happens. They Samuel, as they gathered,
- 17:49they drew water in verse 6 and poured it out as a drink
- 17:53offering before the Lord. They're they're making it.
- 17:55They're making they're doing something that they would
- 17:57remember. This is our this is our drink
- 18:00offering to you God. We are back.
- 18:02And then notice they did in verse 6.
- 18:04They fasted, they started to sacrifice, they gave themselves
- 18:08to the Lord and then they move forward.
- 18:12So good, so powerful, what God wants to do, you know, because
- 18:16change changes, any change is really worthless without putting
- 18:21God first. So yeah, I mean, I'm all pro.
- 18:25I'm all for, you know, New Year's resolutions and new
- 18:29decisions and new commitment. I'm all for all that.
- 18:31But I'm telling you, change without a putting God first
- 18:35ain't going to get you anywhere. I mean, you can make some
- 18:37changes, but you won't be able to keep up with it because you
- 18:39don't have the power to navigate in this Antichrist world to keep
- 18:44those commitments. It's better to what we learned.
- 18:47The New Year's going to be filled with what greater
- 18:49abiding. Just stay put, protect your
- 18:53heart, be anxious for nothing, but in all things by prayer and
- 18:57supplication with Thanksgiving. Make those requests may be known
- 19:02to God and then what is the promise, the peace of God that
- 19:05surpasses all understanding. We'll do what guard your hearts
- 19:10and your minds in Christ Jesus. Notice in verse 7 now great day
- 19:16of revival, amazing things are happening.
- 19:19Verse 7. Now when the Philistines heard
- 19:22that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the
- 19:25Lords or the leaders of the Philistines went up against
- 19:28Israel. And when the children of Israel
- 19:30heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
- 19:34This is interesting. Philistines are the arch enemies
- 19:38of Israel, just like the Ites, Canaanites, parasites, Amorites,
- 19:44all the Ites enemies. But the Philistines were the
- 19:46arch enemy, and you see them over and over and over again.
- 19:49They lived on the coastline and they fiercely protected their
- 19:53land and did not do well with all of their competing tribes,
- 19:56especially Israel. When they hear that Israel has
- 20:01turned their backs, turned their backs back, turned their lives
- 20:04back toward God, they're upset. What difference does it make to
- 20:08them? What do they care?
- 20:11They have a group of Israelites that have really nothing.
- 20:14They're growing, but not significant.
- 20:17They're wandering and, you know, trying to like.
- 20:20What difference does it make to them?
- 20:21I'll tell you because the Philistines here become a
- 20:24picture and a type of the enemy himself, the devil.
- 20:27And the devil hates it when you're happy, and he hates it
- 20:32when you're committed, and he hates it when you make
- 20:35sacrificial steps toward God. He every time you make progress,
- 20:40the enemy is there to give you pushback.
- 20:42Have you noticed that like you make you take 3 steps forward,
- 20:45He is ready to push you 4 steps back.
- 20:47And this is what happens. Great things are happening in
- 20:50the Philistines like, Oh no, we're not having that.
- 20:52And they do the right thing because they're in the right
- 20:54place spiritually with the Lord. They do the right thing.
- 20:58Notice verse 8. So the children of Israel said
- 21:01to Samuel, do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us,
- 21:06that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.
- 21:09They do not take things in their own hands.
- 21:11They don't muster an army, they don't get every, They don't
- 21:14rally the people. They say, would you pray?
- 21:16We need God's wisdom. And it reminded me that it's
- 21:19always a mistake when you choose to take things into your own
- 21:22hands. You are so powerless compared to
- 21:26God's power. You, you don't know everything.
- 21:28You don't have all the resources that God has.
- 21:31It's always best to let God be your defender.
- 21:36And that's what they do here. Notice what happens as they're
- 21:40asking for prayer. It says verse 9 Samuel.
- 21:42Samuel took a suckling lamb and he offered it as a whole burnt
- 21:45offering to the Lord. And Samuel cried out to the Lord
- 21:48of Israel and the Lord, what does your Bible say?
- 21:51Answered him and notice what he did as Samuel was offering up
- 21:56the burnt offering the Philistines junior to battle
- 21:58against Israel. But the Lord don't you need to
- 22:01circle that phrase. Whatever you're facing right
- 22:04now, whatever's coming your way, whatever 2026 has, you don't
- 22:07want to be able to answer, but I have and I've done.
- 22:10You want to be able to answer. But the Lord look what he does.
- 22:14He thunders with a loud Thunder. Can you make it Thunder with a
- 22:17loud Thunder? A No, you don't have that power,
- 22:20but God does not only that it says He did this for the
- 22:25Philistines. So it was localized that that
- 22:27day and he so confused them that they were overcome before Israel
- 22:32and the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the
- 22:35Philistines and drove them back as far as Beth Carr.
- 22:38Victory because they turn to the Lord.
- 22:40Victory because they put their idols aside, check their heart,
- 22:44begin to pray, fast, come together, offer themselves.
- 22:48And when trouble comes, which it does every time you turn back to
- 22:51the Lord, they turn right back to the Lord.
- 22:54Hey, pray for us. We don't know what to do.
- 22:55We're not going to do it like before.
- 22:58We're not going to respond like before.
- 23:01And in this time, notice it says Samuel takes the suckling lamb.
- 23:06So he offers a sacrifice, a whole burnt offering.
- 23:09He cries out to the Lord and God answers and he gives them the
- 23:15victory. And in verse 11, they were able
- 23:17to chase them out and pursued them all the way back to the
- 23:20area of Beth Carr. Sam, Samuel shows us today that
- 23:27God wants to give you the victory and what you're facing
- 23:30in the new year, no matter what comes your way.
- 23:33The nation was ready because they were repentant.
- 23:35So they were humble. They were humble before God, and
- 23:39they go to Samuel and ask for help.
- 23:41Humility is always attracting. You know, God is attracted to
- 23:43humility. He resists the proud, the Bible
- 23:47says, but he gives grace to the humble.
- 23:50He's attracted to humility, to dependence, to surrender.
- 23:56We saw in our last Bible study that in this new year, what God
- 24:00is going to be looking for is greater sacrifice.
- 24:02Greater sacrifice because you, you see this, it's you you have,
- 24:06but you have Samuel taking an offering, a suckling lamb and
- 24:09offering it as a burnt offering. You know, getting a lamb and
- 24:12offering it to the Lord is a lot easier than offering yourself.
- 24:15It's a lot easier. Last night I make the comment,
- 24:17I'm sure you can buy a lamb around here.
- 24:19And some guy that has my number, he already looked it up and gave
- 24:22me the link of where I could get the lamb.
- 24:24So I knew you could get a lamb around here somewhere and we can
- 24:27just go and buy. We can Venmo, we can Apple Pay,
- 24:29whatever. We can swipe our card, get
- 24:31ourselves a lamp and sacrifice it in some way.
- 24:34That would be much easier than saying no, I want your life.
- 24:37That's what God asked for Romans chapter 12, that you and I would
- 24:41offer ourselves a living sacrifice.
- 24:44But here we have both. We don't need to offer lambs
- 24:47today, by the way, because Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God that's
- 24:50taken away the sins of the world.
- 24:51It's by His blood, His death and resurrection, that your sins and
- 24:55mine can be forgiven. He's the lamb.
- 24:57We don't need any more lambs. But God does ask and does
- 25:01require you that you would offer yourself and all that you are,
- 25:08your talents, your treasures, your job, your kids, your money,
- 25:12your possessions, your thoughts, your ideas, your creativity.
- 25:16It all belongs to the Lord. And maybe this is the year that
- 25:20you expand that part of you. Maybe this is the year where you
- 25:24recognize that the victory comes when you go to the Lord, when
- 25:28you turn to Him. And in this event of victory,
- 25:34notice what Samuel does, which comes to the sum of our Bible
- 25:38study today in verse 12. It says that Samuel took a
- 25:44stone. It was probably much bigger than
- 25:47this, but it says that Samuel took a stone and he set it up.
- 25:53And notice what happens. He sets the stone and he says a
- 25:57first of all, he calls its name Ebenezer.
- 25:59I bet all these all these years you thought Ebenezer's last name
- 26:03was Scrooge, didn't you? It's actually a Bible name.
- 26:08The word Ebenezer means stone of help or stone of assistance, and
- 26:14he calls the stone Ebenezer. And he says thus far the Lord
- 26:18has helped us. He wants everyone to know with
- 26:23this stone how important the faithfulness of God is.
- 26:27He doesn't want them to forget. He wasn't instructed to do this.
- 26:32It was something that came from his heart, something that he
- 26:35wanted to help the children of Israel.
- 26:37Maybe he's thinking back to Joshua, he's that's a great idea
- 26:42and he brings this stone. He says, look, this is the
- 26:45Lord's victory. It's not our victory.
- 26:47This is what the Lord has done. And by the way, not only did God
- 26:50give us the victory, but thus far, all the way to today, thus
- 26:56far, God has been our help. Thus far the enemy pursues, but
- 27:03the victory belongs to the Lord. Notice in verse 13 it says the
- 27:07Philistines were subdued and they didn't come anymore into
- 27:10the territory. They didn't come into Israel
- 27:13anymore. The hand of the Lord was against
- 27:15the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
- 27:17Thus far the Lord has helped us, and the cities which the
- 27:21Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel
- 27:24from Ekron to Gath, and Israel recovered its territory from the
- 27:28hands of the Philistines. Also there was peace between
- 27:31Israel and the Amorites. Look at the benefits thus far.
- 27:35The Lord has helped us, and there's more and there's more
- 27:39and there's more. They don't have to deal with the
- 27:41Philistines as long as Samuel's in charge.
- 27:44They didn't have to deal with that enemy.
- 27:45They had a lot of enemies, but they didn't have to deal with
- 27:47them. Not only that, they had land
- 27:50restored to them. This is very, this is very
- 27:54special language for a lot of us because there's another promise
- 27:58that I've held on to my entire Christian life.
- 28:01It's in Joel, and it basically says that God promises the
- 28:05nation of Israel to restore to them the years that the locust
- 28:09has eaten. I can't tell you how much that
- 28:12truth carried me through so many dark and difficult days, days
- 28:17when I didn't even think I was a real Christian, when I didn't
- 28:20even know if I was going to make it.
- 28:22Like those early days were so challenging for me because I was
- 28:26so messed up in my mind and in my life and so many consequences
- 28:32of sin. But somebody gave me this verse
- 28:35that God does the work of restoration.
- 28:37He does the work of restoring and reconciling.
- 28:42And I held on to it, so much so that it became a goal in my
- 28:45life. I got saved in my early 20s.
- 28:48So I did the math and I was looking for the day I actually
- 28:52had it down because I got saved on a Wednesday night.
- 28:55So it was a 7:00 service. So I probably got saved around
- 28:58730 something. And then we got to change the
- 29:01time for Denver. And then we got to have one
- 29:03second to it because at that time that would mark the time
- 29:07that I had served God longer, one second longer then I had
- 29:12served this world. And I counted all my baby years
- 29:14because I was rotten in the room as well.
- 29:16So all those years, not only the years I knew what I was doing,
- 29:19but all the rotten, all of them. I just like all my years till I
- 29:22got saved. And then tragedy struck our
- 29:25family and the date hit during that time and I didn't even
- 29:28celebrate, didn't even know it. I forgot about it until I picked
- 29:31it up again. And I'm like, oh, it wasn't that
- 29:34important after all. And the Lord was going it's
- 29:36something I want to share something with you, Ed.
- 29:40The date isn't as important as me.
- 29:44I've been doing this work of restoration all along.
- 29:46You don't need to market by a date or a second or a time
- 29:49because I've been restoring all along.
- 29:50I'm working in your. It was such a beautiful
- 29:52revelation. When you hold on to these
- 29:54promises, I look at what happening in the children of
- 29:57Israel. They turn to the Lord and what
- 29:59did he do restored. What did he do protect?
- 30:03What did he do help. What did he do?
- 30:05Give them strong leadership. So beautiful and so wonderful.
- 30:09And how did they remember this going forward?
- 30:13Was a stone a stone today? In a few moments, I'm going to
- 30:18invite you to come and pick up a stone because I want you to mark
- 30:22today. And you may have done this
- 30:24before and that's OK because I also brought some of these
- 30:27stones that I have from my office at home.
- 30:30This actually is the stone and I write on them with sharpies.
- 30:33This is the stone. I taught this Bible study right
- 30:36after the pandemic. That's when the Lord gave it to
- 30:38me. And right at white into the new
- 30:40year after the pandemic, I, I wrote it down.
- 30:42I remember that was such a hard year that was so challenging on
- 30:45so many different fronts. But thus far, the Lord has
- 30:49helped us and we got through it and we made it.
- 30:53You see, when you think back, you want them to remember the
- 30:54worst. And that's how the world is.
- 30:56They get all political and remember the worst and remember
- 30:58the worst and remember the worst.
- 31:00That's not God. God wants you to Remember Me.
- 31:06I was with you. You made it through.
- 31:08Oh, but oh Lord, it was so bad. Stop remembering the bad.
- 31:14Remember my faithfulness. And that's what this rock is.
- 31:17I remember the bad, but I remember God's faithfulness far
- 31:19more than I have other ones because we do this a lot.
- 31:22We'll take you to the Elah Valley in the area where the
- 31:25battle between David and Goliath was.
- 31:27And and no rocks everywhere. So I always tell the group, pick
- 31:30up at least a couple rocks. One you're going to throw and
- 31:33just make sure you throw away from people.
- 31:35There's a little Bible study. You're going to throw your own
- 31:37Goliath because everybody's got an issue.
- 31:39So this one is from 2017. I wrote it down.
- 31:43I also have a giant that I keep taking back to the Elah Valley.
- 31:46I have now for 13 years. So that's written on here.
- 31:49I won't share that, but I have it here.
- 31:51Elah Valley, It's to remind me of God.
- 31:53He's a, he's able to take super small stones and deal with big
- 31:58giants in my life. And we all have big giants.
- 32:00So I got these stones. This one's special.
- 32:03I didn't write anything on it because I remember it.
- 32:05In 2021, I took this Bible study around the country and was
- 32:08sharing at other churches. And this is a stone I picked up
- 32:11because in one of the churches, they forgot to buy the rocks.
- 32:14I called ahead and I said, can you buy some rocks?
- 32:17They probably didn't understand what I was doing.
- 32:19So you can buy some rocks, put them on the stage, and they
- 32:22didn't do it. And so I found out that morning.
- 32:24I'm like, bro, this is like a whole message.
- 32:25I need these rocks. Like so.
- 32:27So while all the stores are closed and I'm like, well, do
- 32:29you have rocks around the church?
- 32:31And he says, yeah. And I said, well, we'll find
- 32:32rocks around the church and the church doesn't have any
- 32:35foundation anymore, but we got the rocks.
- 32:39And that's what this one is cooperating with.
- 32:41Those guys, they were young guys that went out and did something
- 32:45for me and they were able to find enough rocks around the
- 32:48property that everybody in the church was able to take them.
- 32:51So that's kind of special for everyone with those rocks.
- 32:53And so I just have these memories of episodes in my life
- 32:57and these are not, these aren't all of them.
- 32:59They're set up in my office at home where I'm reminded of a
- 33:03singular truth. Even though they all have a
- 33:05story behind them, I'm reminded of a singular truth.
- 33:09Thus far, the Lord has helped me.
- 33:13And if God has been faithful in the past, then He will remain
- 33:16faithful today. And for some, we just need a
- 33:19visual reminder. It's too bad that we need a
- 33:23visual reminder, but fine, doesn't matter.
- 33:25Don't beat yourself up over it. I think of when we put pictures
- 33:28up on our walls, you know that we don't put 1000 pictures up on
- 33:31a wall. And if you do, I'm sorry for
- 33:33mentioning you, but we don't put 1000 pictures.
- 33:36You know, in my office, I used to have a wall dedicated to
- 33:39maybe 40 pictures or so of different memories that I had,
- 33:42really significant ones, very important ones.
- 33:45And when they redid the office and redid the walls, I was told
- 33:48I can only put a few. And so I looked before I came
- 33:52in. I have 8 pictures on my wall.
- 33:54They're right across from my off from my desk because I look over
- 33:57and those were specifically personally picked by me.
- 34:01Those are the ones I want to see.
- 34:02Those are the ones I want to be remembered.
- 34:04Of course, my kids are up there. My oldest son is there on a
- 34:07special trip and, and there's a picture of my kids are up there
- 34:11and my grandson is up there and my grandfather is also up there.
- 34:16And they just serve as reminders.
- 34:17I have a bunch of pictures on my phone that I could look at
- 34:20anytime, But the ones I want to remember, those are the ones I
- 34:23put on the wall. Isn't that true for you?
- 34:24Those are the ones you want to remember.
- 34:26And now some of you are thinking, man, I think I should
- 34:28go home and change some of those pictures.
- 34:29Yeah, you should. You should.
- 34:31You should swap them out. Fresh new memories of what's
- 34:35important to you. That's what God's saying to you
- 34:37today with rocks. Not with pictures, but we're
- 34:39rocks because he wants the memory to be internal.
- 34:43He wants you to take this memory stone and immediately go back to
- 34:47a place like those rocks. When I'm mentioning them, many
- 34:50of them are attached to a, a visual memory.
- 34:53I used to have a very good photographic memory.
- 34:56It's partial of what it used to be, but a lot of my memories are
- 34:59tied to visuals. Like I can see it sometimes when
- 35:02I'm teaching, you might see me look up or like I'm thinking and
- 35:05I'm recalling a picture. It's, it's helping me to
- 35:08understand that moment and this is what God has for you.
- 35:11This may be something you add to the new year, greater
- 35:15remembrance. Oh, by the way, for the children
- 35:17of Israel, there were two sets of rocks.
- 35:20One was in the middle of the Jordan, which I found
- 35:23fascinating. They put a stack of rocks in the
- 35:25middle of the Jordan. And I believe, and I add to it,
- 35:28the Bible doesn't say specifically that if anybody
- 35:31ever wanted to go back across the Jordan, away from the
- 35:34promised Land, ever wanted to wander away ever, I'm done with
- 35:38the promised land. I don't want this anymore.
- 35:39It's too much fighting too hard. This is not what was promised.
- 35:42I'm going to go back. They would have to go back to
- 35:45through the Jordan River over the rocks.
- 35:48They would have to pass through those rocks some way.
- 35:50So really to go backwards, the children of Israel would have to
- 35:53go past the faithfulness of God. It couldn't go be easy for them.
- 35:59They could swim, they could take a boat wherever they but they
- 36:02would have to go past the faithfulness of God.
- 36:05And some of you, you need to build a wall.
- 36:07You know, you again, the rocks with your kids is one thing.
- 36:10Maybe you need to go down to don't Home Depot and just get a
- 36:13bag of rocks and set something up in your backyard, something
- 36:16significant. Because you just have this, you
- 36:18have this way about you that you wander a lot.
- 36:21And you need to be reminded all that if I wander again, I'm
- 36:25going past the faithfulness of God.
- 36:26Why would I do that? He's been so good to me.
- 36:29And you might remember how hard it was and how difficult.
- 36:31And God has been so faithful to me, like you might need to build
- 36:35a wall that would be so difficult for you to climb over
- 36:40because the days are short and we don't need any more wandering
- 36:44around in our lives. We need to be laser focused in
- 36:47these last days. When you acknowledge the work of
- 36:51God, it should always lead you to worship God.
- 36:55And we have these Ebenezer stones.
- 36:59Ebenezer stones. These are not some cartoon
- 37:03character that was developed by a novel, as great as that story
- 37:07is. These stones, Ebenezer,
- 37:10represents the faithfulness of God.
- 37:13And each one of you said multiple times today that you
- 37:18can think of God's faithfulness in your life, how He's come
- 37:21through. And today I want to remind you
- 37:24that God's past faithfulness requires your present trust
- 37:28right now, today. And I want you to leave with a
- 37:34stone. And so as the worship team comes
- 37:37back up, you also need to come up.
- 37:40And this is a little different. We don't normally do this.
- 37:43It's fine. It's, you know, I, we're going
- 37:47to all get up and come up and get a rock.
- 37:50And so just do that right now as the team comes up, just come up.
- 37:54You can pick a big one. There's some small ones.
- 37:56I picked a flat one because I want to write something on it.
- 38:00But there's one for everyone. If you need more than one Lowe's
- 38:03or Home Depot and just go ahead and go back to your seat.
- 38:08I know it's going to be a little uncomfortable, but as you're
- 38:10crossing someone, say hello to them.
- 38:11Meet your church. This is your family.
- 38:14These are all the new peeps of the new 945 service.
- 38:17Here we are worshipping the Lord, getting free rocks.
- 38:22If you come back next week, we have free bricks, cement, but do
- 38:34it's OK, take your time. You can worship while you're
- 38:36walking. The worship team will take it
- 38:39from here and I'll have a few words to share in just a moment.
- 38:42So come on up and let's sing to the Lord.
- 38:46OK, everybody that's standing and you guys that are heading
- 38:48back, I want you to lift up your stones because we get to to lift
- 38:52the stone, this Ebenezer stone up.
- 38:54And we could say, look what God has done, how faithful he has
- 38:58been. But we're going to read what the
- 39:00Scripture says together. I'm going to read it first and
- 39:02then we'll read it together. But we want to left our Ebenezer
- 39:06song. We want to set it in a place to
- 39:07remind us. Thus far the Lord has helped us.
- 39:11You ready? Thus far, the Lord has helped
- 39:15us. Say it again.
- 39:17Thus far, the Lord has helped us.
- 39:19He hasn't brought you this far just to drop you, just to say
- 39:23it's all on you. OK, I got you, you know.
- 39:25Hey Ed, I got you into your 50s on your own now.
- 39:28No, no, what God has begun and started, He is faithful to
- 39:32complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
- 39:35And so be reminded of this faithfulness this year.
- 39:38Let the Holy Spirit use this time in this Bible study to drop
- 39:42into your heart, faith and string and be ready just like we
- 39:47have the kids here. When your kids ask, be ready
- 39:49with an answer of God's faithfulness and how good He is.
- 39:53Amen. I pray that you've been.
