Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, as promised, it is the Shake It
- 0:02Speaker 1: Off Soundbites of the week this week, and I once
- 0:07Speaker 1: again was given the opportunity by Lucas A Ferrara to
- 0:12Speaker 1: join his show with Mert Roberts on AM nine seven
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Answer and ask our guests the last couple of
- 0:17Speaker 1: weeks some questions and with the Mam Donnie election looming
- 0:22Speaker 1: large last week and this week, of course, I asked
- 0:26Speaker 1: about the NYPD and its fate. And I first asked
- 0:31Speaker 1: that to Joe BURRELLI, former councilman and actually minority whip
- 0:37Speaker 1: of the city Council, about whether or not Mam Donnie
- 0:42Speaker 1: would truly welcome back to Jessica Tish and if Commissioner
- 0:45Speaker 1: Tish would actually accept the offer to return back to
- 0:50Speaker 1: the NYPD.
- 0:51Speaker 2: We only have a few minutes left, Joe, and we
- 0:53Speaker 2: have a question from our producer, Alex Garrett.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Go galax, all right, we're talking about the Social Workers NYPD.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I have a question for you, Joe Low the extending
- 1:01Speaker 1: of the oll advertance to Jessica Tish. Will she accept
- 1:04Speaker 1: it if he gets elected or not?
- 1:07Speaker 3: I don't know. It's it's a tough call for her, right,
- 1:10Speaker 3: I mean, she has her own political ambitions that she
- 1:12Speaker 3: might want to test, you know, and if she's maybe
- 1:15Speaker 3: the candidate to run against Mamdani in his first reelection.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And the other question is, you know, who's in charge
- 1:22Speaker 3: of the NYPD. Is is it going to be Commissioner
- 1:24Speaker 3: Tish or is it going to be Zoa and Momdani.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I mean, at the end of the day, you know,
- 1:27Speaker 3: she serves, like all commissioners, at the pleasure of the mayor.
- 1:31Speaker 3: And if the mayor is telling the NYPD we're changing
- 1:33Speaker 3: our policies, he has the right to do that. He
- 1:36Speaker 3: has the ability to do that. So it's unclear like
- 1:39Speaker 3: whether just having her there as a way to satisfy moderates.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I mean, that's all he did. By the way. He
- 1:44Speaker 3: was so smart to do it, you know. And I
- 1:46Speaker 3: even criticize, like Curtis Leewolf for being too shortsighted to
- 1:50Speaker 3: even see things like, hey, why don't you just say
- 1:53Speaker 3: you're going to keep Jessica Tish. She seems really popular,
- 1:55Speaker 3: Maybe people will think you're serious about being mayor. He
- 1:57Speaker 3: didn't do that, of course, but like I think it
- 2:00Speaker 3: was a good play by Mom Donnie to try to
- 2:02Speaker 3: show people that he could be moderate. He could be
- 2:04Speaker 3: a little bit and say more moderate than his critics.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Smite my painting to me.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And then I don't if you know this name, Chief Aradondo,
- 2:11Speaker 1: who was the Minneapolis police chief during that George Floyd
- 2:15Speaker 1: tragedy and the aftermath and yes, even the votes to
- 2:20Speaker 1: disband defund the Minneapolis Police Department following the George Floyd tragedy. Well,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I asked him what Mam Donnie's threats to disband even
- 2:30Speaker 1: one part of the NYPD would mean for this city.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Hey, Chief, our producer Alex Garrett has been patiently waiting.
- 2:39Speaker 2: He's a big chief, So go ahead, Alex, say loaded
- 2:43Speaker 2: the chief.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Chief awesome having united as always. And you know we're
- 2:46Speaker 1: talking about the socialism, the social you know, social worker part,
- 2:50Speaker 1: But I would about the disbanding part. When New Yorker's
- 2:52Speaker 1: here that mom Donnie wants to disband units. I mean,
- 2:55Speaker 1: you kind of underwent those threats in Minnesota. Can the
- 2:58Speaker 1: city council step been in stop that? I mean, can
- 3:00Speaker 1: they stop them from disbanding units here?
- 3:03Speaker 4: Well, I will tell you real time, Alex, what happened
- 3:05Speaker 4: here in Minneapolis the previous election for the first time
- 3:09Speaker 4: in the city of Minneapolis. A ballot referendum was put
- 3:11Speaker 4: on for basically to disband the Minneapolis police Department. Communities
- 3:19Speaker 4: overwhelmingly came out and voted against it. In matter of fact,
- 3:24Speaker 4: alex communities that had had a history of grievances, documented
- 3:30Speaker 4: grievances and complaints with the minimsolute department came out and
- 3:33Speaker 4: voted against it. And the reason why Alex is they
- 3:36Speaker 4: said two things can be true at once. We can
- 3:39Speaker 4: have a police department that needs reform, that needs to
- 3:43Speaker 4: be improved, but we still need police. And I will
- 3:47Speaker 4: tell you that this recent mayoral election here in Minneapolis,
- 3:52Speaker 4: public safety was number one on the ballot and people said,
- 3:57Speaker 4: at the end of the day, we don't need less police.
- 4:00Speaker 4: We need more police. We need for them to do
- 4:02Speaker 4: the job right, but we need more police. So so
- 4:06Speaker 4: it will be interesting to see. I've I've certainly aware
- 4:08Speaker 4: of previous comments that Marrilect Mendami has has said about NYPD,
- 4:15Speaker 4: but I certainly will tell you here in Minneapolis that
- 4:18Speaker 4: has been walked back. Those sentiments have been walked back
- 4:21Speaker 4: here in Minneapolis about disbanding the police and defunding the police.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Uh that that is that is not aged well here.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And one last thing rich for Commissioner Tish, she's hearing
- 4:33Speaker 1: all of this, what's your advice to her, because you've
- 4:34Speaker 1: led a department, talk about your advice or her as
- 4:36Speaker 1: she leads into this next phase in New York.
- 4:39Speaker 4: It fields like I think, I think it's going to
- 4:41Speaker 4: be very important. Obviously, the Commissioner is going to have
- 4:44Speaker 4: to have a strong relationship with the Mayor. I think
- 4:47Speaker 4: it's important for them, uh, you know, obviously she serves
- 4:50Speaker 4: at the pleasure of the Mayor. I think it's going
- 4:52Speaker 4: to be important for for her to uh talk about
- 4:57Speaker 4: her leadership style, you know, how how best she will
- 5:00Speaker 4: work with the Mayor's office, what she sees as the
- 5:05Speaker 4: strengths of NYPD in terms of providing that public safety
- 5:09Speaker 4: to all New York residents. And I think it's going to.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Be important for him.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Obviously he's publicly, at least from my vantage point, he's
- 5:18Speaker 4: tried to either clarify statements he's made in the past
- 5:22Speaker 4: regarding NYPD. I think all of us should have some
- 5:26Speaker 4: grace in terms of learning in time. And I think
- 5:32Speaker 4: it's but it's going to be critically important that they're
- 5:34Speaker 4: on the same page. I think that I will say
- 5:36Speaker 4: here from Minneapolis. As soon as Minneapolis residents or New
- 5:41Speaker 4: York City residents, if they see that there's a bit
- 5:44Speaker 4: of daylight between the Commission and the mayor, that can
- 5:49Speaker 4: be problematic. And so I think not that they're always
- 5:52Speaker 4: going to agree, but I think that moving forward, that
- 5:55Speaker 4: both of them seem unified in their approach to keeping
- 5:59Speaker 4: New New York City residence safe. I think that's a
- 6:03Speaker 4: good way to at least start out.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Now as being of law enforcement. And by the way,
- 6:06Speaker 1: thanks again Lucas for having me join in and ask
- 6:13Speaker 1: them questions there. But the other thing I want to
- 6:17Speaker 1: mention about law enforcement is there's an article by USA
- 6:19Speaker 1: Today that says Mamdanni could be arrested by Donald Trump.
- 6:28Speaker 1: That's right, USA Today writing this article with the headline
- 6:34Speaker 1: Trump threatens to punish NYC over mam Donnie Well he
- 6:39Speaker 1: arrests the new mayor, this would be possibly stripping him
- 6:42Speaker 1: of a citizenship of Mandanni, then the assistant on Federal
- 6:45Speaker 1: Immigration Enforcement. That sounds kind of insane. Mamdanni, born in Uganda,
- 6:49Speaker 1: moved to the United States as a child and was
- 6:51Speaker 1: actually raised in Manhattan's born in Side Heights, became a
- 6:55Speaker 1: naturalisis in twenty eighteen. The fact that he's threat to
- 7:00Speaker 1: arrest Mom Donnie, I would not want that unless it's
- 7:04Speaker 1: not a real, possible, plausible cause. Other than that, don't
- 7:09Speaker 1: do that. I would say, let's see how he does
- 7:13Speaker 1: his first term. But more importantly, let's not arrest him
- 7:16Speaker 1: on something that it seems like a non factor. The
- 7:19Speaker 1: guy's a citizen. The guy is a citizen, d J referral,
- 7:23Speaker 1: have to DOJ referral whatever. The guy's a naturalized citizens
- 7:26Speaker 1: of twenty eighteen. Leave him alone in that regard. Arresting
- 7:30Speaker 1: him would be dumb, but we must be mindful of
- 7:34Speaker 1: his threats to the NYPD, which is why I asked
- 7:37Speaker 1: Joe Borelli and Chief Ardando about his plans maum Donnie's
- 7:45Speaker 1: plans heading into twenty twenty six. And I'm so honored
- 7:48Speaker 1: that Lucas Embert allowed me to chime in the last
- 7:54Speaker 1: couple of weeks, as it's been election heavy here on
- 7:59Speaker 1: all the amnis of the n sure, but one like
- 8:01Speaker 1: up with Alex Garrett. We'll talk to you soon.
