• Tremonton: What Did Newhouse Film? Bob Has Questions. Unfortunately. — Episode 08 Bob: This episode uses AI-generated voices for both hosts, Virtual Bob and Jane River. Bob: Welcome to Bob Has Questions. Unfortunately. Real Bob chose a story that begins on a family trip. Jane: On July second, nineteen fifty-two, Delbert Newhouse, a Navy photographer, was travelling with his family near Tremonton, in northern Utah. In his later written account, his wife noticed bright objects in the sky and asked him to stop. He got his movie camera from a suitcase and filmed them. Bob: So investigators had more than a sighting report. Jane: They had film to examine. He sent it to the Air Force for investigation, but he could not identify the objects. Bob: What had he filmed—and could the film tell them? Bob: Do you think Real Bob chose this because he expected a simple answer? Jane: My theory is that he enjoys giving his artificial hosts unsolved homework. Bob: Maybe this should be Jane Has Answers. Jane: And Bob Has Follow-ups. I see how you've arranged this. Bob: He made me to ask on his behalf. What did Newhouse say he saw? Jane: Newhouse described about ten or twelve objects moving in a rough formation. Near the end, he said, one went in the opposite direction, away from the others. He filmed that one as well. Bob: A group, then one heading the other way. Did he have any idea of their size or distance? Jane: No. He couldn't reliably estimate those things. His account gave investigators a description of what he saw, with important limits on what he could measure. Bob: What did he say they looked like before anyone started interpreting the film? Jane: An Air Force interview in September recorded that he thought their light was reflected sunlight. He described them as thin, approximately as long as they were wide, and similar in shape. Bob: He could describe a shape. Could someone else actually confirm it from the film? Jane: Its small images left that uncertain. Investigators had to compare what they could establish from the film with what Newhouse reported seeing. Bob: Who did he send the film to? Jane: The film reached Project Blue Book, the Air Force's effort to investigate reports of unidentified flying objects, or UFOs. Captain Edward Ruppelt led the project. Photographic specialists now had to work out whether Newhouse had filmed something familiar under unfamiliar conditions. Bob: Before we get to anything extraordinary, what ordinary explanations did they check? Jane: Aircraft, balloons and birds. But getting an answer would turn out to be harder than simply enlarging the picture. Bob: What did the Air Force's photographic specialists find? Jane: The early Air Force photographic work found that the images were too small to reveal the objects' shapes. The specialists tried another route: how much light the objects appeared to produce or reflect. Bob: If you can't make out a shape, how does brightness help? Jane: The analysts asked whether familiar objects could reflect enough light. One early analysis argued against ordinary white birds and some balloons on that basis. It didn't rule out every kind of reflective aircraft. Bob: That sounds like birds were out. Why were they still being considered? Jane: Because that interpretation wasn't settled. Ruppelt was still asking whether birds could explain the film. In October, he asked whether a bird specialist could assess it. Bob: What did the Navy's photographic analysts find? Jane: The film also went to analysts at a Navy photographic center. Their work took the investigation in a more unusual direction. A December progress report favored the idea that the objects gave off their own light. They measured movement and brightness, and argued against familiar candidates. Bob: That sounds like quite a conclusion. Was it an official Navy finding? Jane: No. This was a working report, not a final Navy finding that Newhouse had filmed spacecraft. Bob: Was that the whole Navy's view, or only the photographic team's? Jane: Other Navy specialists thought the objects resembled balloons. Some favored a pillow-shaped type; another specialist was less convinced. They sought records of actual balloon releases. Bob: Did they find a matching balloon launch? Jane: The records examined for this episode don't establish a matching launch. They show disagreement even among people in the same service. Bob: So even inside the Navy, specialists saw different possibilities. What would the public eventually be told? Jane: That became a problem of its own. First, there were the speed estimates to examine. Bob: Could the film tell them how fast the objects were moving? Jane: Investigators assumed a distance they hadn't measured, so the film couldn't establish an exact speed. And if Newhouse followed an object with the camera, it could stay near the center of the picture as it crossed the sky. There was nothing fixed to show how much the camera moved. Bob: Then those speed estimates still needed checking. Who did that? Jane: In January nineteen fifty-three, a CIA-convened group of scientists examined UFO evidence, including the Tremonton film. Physicist Howard Robertson chaired it. This became known as the Robertson Panel. Bob: What did the scientists make of the Navy's analysis? Jane: They questioned the measurements. Copying film can change how light or dark its images appear, so a copy could be an uncertain guide to the original brightness. The scientists favored birds, particularly gulls. Bob: Before ruling birds out, would it help to film birds and compare? Jane: Yes, under comparable conditions. Sunlight reflected from a familiar object can register brightly; a bright image doesn't automatically mean the object makes its own light. Bob: Was identifying the objects their only concern? Jane: No. The panel also worried that UFO reports could clog communications needed for real warnings. The scientists recommended education and reducing the attention given to reports they considered explainable. Bob: How did that affect the handling of this film? Jane: Those policy questions would soon meet the technical disagreement in a discussion about releasing Newhouse's film. Bob: What do the planning records show? Jane: Planning notes dated February eleventh, nineteen fifty-three, discuss how to handle the Tremonton film. The date is handwritten, and the surviving sheets are unsigned. They record a discussion involving several officials. Bob: Were they planning to release it? Jane: They considered releasing it without identifying the objects. The notes recognize that withholding it could make the story attract more attention. Bob: Would they explain why the analysts had disagreed? Jane: One part of the notes is revealing. I'm reading from the written record: “hope that no questions were asked.” The context was questions about the Navy's report. Bob: Why avoid questions about that report? Jane: The discussion criticized that analysis, but also worried about the public consequences of acknowledging an error by Navy analysts. A disagreement about evidence had become entangled with concern about how an institution would look. Bob: Were they also proposing a way to settle the science? Jane: The same discussion also proposed work that could help settle the science: make comparison films of known gulls, balloons and aircraft, and redo the Navy's brightness analysis. Bob: Would those tests help identify the objects? Jane: They could. But the records we've reviewed don't establish whether those comparison films were actually made. We can trace what happened to the separate recommendation to check the Navy's brightness work. Bob: A proposal isn't what an audience actually hears. Do we know what was released? Jane: No. A planning record establishes what people discussed and proposed. It doesn't establish that every sentence was issued. A later draft statement was cautious about the unknown distance, size and speed. To trace what actually reached an audience, we'd need the released material and its path to publication. Bob: But we can follow the promised scientific work. Were those measurements checked again? Jane: The motion calculations were revised. In May nineteen fifty-three, the photographic team produced a report replacing the December version. It still favored an unusual interpretation, while making clear that it didn't necessarily represent the Navy's official view. Bob: Did they now favor birds? Jane: No. They were still arguing for something more unusual. They also recommended a better brightness test—the question the scientists had challenged. Bob: Did they do that test? Jane: No. A letter from the photographic center in March nineteen fifty-four says it never happened. The center had worked from copies and had never possessed Newhouse's camera original. Bob: Why hadn't they asked for the original? Jane: The letter says that because the proposed test never materialized, the original wasn't requested. It records an unfinished test, without explaining every reason behind that gap. Bob: If speed was revised but the brightness test wasn't done, how did Ruppelt describe that later? Jane: In his nineteen fifty-six book, he said the Navy hadn't rechecked its work. Read broadly, that seems hard to reconcile with the revised report. Bob: Was he talking about speed, or the brightness test? Jane: The brightness test. “Recheck” makes two different jobs sound like one. The motion calculations were revised; that particular light-analysis test was not performed. Bob: While the labs disagreed, did Newhouse add anything to his account? Jane: In the mid-nineteen-fifties, researcher Robert M. L. Baker Junior examined the film for Douglas Aircraft. His report, dated May sixteenth, nineteen fifty-six, included a description Newhouse had given in later interviews. Bob: What was different in that later account? Jane: He described dark, gun-metal-colored objects with a profile like two saucers joined together. Bob: Had he described any shape at the beginning? Jane: Yes. The early interview recorded thin objects, approximately as long as they were wide, and reflected light. But the early documents we examined don't establish the fuller saucer profile and dark surface. Bob: Why do the descriptions differ? Jane: There are possibilities, but no demonstrated answer. Early questioning or recording might have missed a detail. The witness might have been describing an initial view that the film didn't capture clearly. Memory and later discussion might have changed the account. We'd need evidence to choose among them. Bob: Did Ruppelt offer an explanation? Jane: In his book, he said appearance wasn't a question on his list. Yet the September interview contains answers about shape and reflected light. His explanation doesn't fully account for that record, and the record doesn't reveal everything said in every interview. Bob: And did Baker's analysis of the film get any closer to an identification? Jane: His report didn't reach a definite identification. More detail had appeared, but the question wasn't closed. Bob: Then how did the Air Force describe the investigation? Jane: A UFO movie had prompted a request for information about the Tremonton film. A memorandum dated June first, nineteen fifty-six, was prepared for the Air Force press room at the Pentagon. It was signed by Colonel John G. Eriksen. Bob: After all that disagreement, what did the memorandum tell the press room? Jane: It supported seagulls. But listen to how it described the history. This is a reading from the written memorandum: “The unanimity of opinion present in all evaluations made in this case.” It went on to say there was little reasonable doubt the objects were seagulls. Bob: Every evaluation agreed? How does that square with what we've just heard? Jane: It doesn't. The documents are rather less cooperative. Early photographic work argued against ordinary white birds on brightness grounds. Navy photographic analysts maintained an unusual interpretation. Balloon specialists considered balloons. The Robertson Panel favored gulls. Bob: Could Eriksen have meant the opinions his office ultimately accepted? Jane: Possibly. But the memo doesn't define a narrower set. It says all evaluations, and the surviving record contains real disagreement between groups and within institutions. Bob: Do we know which reports reached him before he signed? Jane: Not completely. Baker's report is dated before this memorandum, but a report's date doesn't establish when another person received or read it. We shouldn't turn the calendar into proof of Eriksen's knowledge. Bob: The wording overstates the agreement. Can we go further and say he knowingly misled people? Jane: No. The record we've examined doesn't establish what he knew. Nor have we traced exactly what reached the public. Bob: An overstated memo doesn't make birds impossible. What's the case for birds? Jane: In the nineteen-sixties, William Hartmann examined the film for the University of Colorado's UFO study. He favored birds. He described the images as small and relatively sharp. Even a sharp dot can be too small to identify. Bob: What made him more confident? Jane: In nineteen sixty-eight, he reported seeing flocks in Utah that resembled Newhouse's film. That showed him that known birds could produce a similar appearance. Bob: Does a similar-looking flock settle what happened in nineteen fifty-two? Jane: He came to regard the objects as birds. The later observations strengthened his explanation; they didn't measure the distance of the objects Newhouse filmed. Bob: Suppose Newhouse had filmed technology nobody recognized. What evidence would let us take that possibility further? Jane: Another camera, at a known place and time, showing the same objects. That might let investigators establish distance. Then a claim about an unusual speed or maneuver would have something firmer beneath it. Bob: Could a distinctive feature in the images also help? Jane: Yes. Something a bird, balloon or aircraft couldn't reasonably produce would give the unfamiliar-technology idea something specific to explain. An unfamiliar craft wouldn't have to look like a familiar aircraft. Bob: Could a misleading official account and an extraordinary event both be true? Jane: They could, but they need separate evidence. Even a dated early statement with the fuller saucer description would help answer one specific question: when that detail first appeared. It wouldn't by itself identify what was filmed. Bob: We've followed the witness, the analyses and the later account. What can we actually conclude? Jane: Newhouse gave investigators film, but not every measurement they needed. Different groups reached different answers. Some work was revised. One proposed brightness test never happened. The later claim that all the evaluations agreed leaves that disagreement out. Bob: And our original question—what were the objects? Jane: Birds remain a serious possibility. A more unusual explanation would need evidence of its own. We can keep asking what the objects were without losing sight of what the documents actually say. Bob: Real Bob, back to you. Jane: TTFN, ta-ta for now!
