- 0:24I think the most important lesson is today's episode.
- 0:29It is about being the business owner who leads themselves
- 0:33forward because guys, you are both the CEO and the employee of
- 0:38your business. But leadership happens at every
- 0:40level. And I am super excited to
- 0:42introduce our guest today. She's a friend that I have had
- 0:44the opportunity to watch her business grow to be a brainstorm
- 0:48thinking partner with her. And I think what she does is
- 0:51really amazing. So I was thrilled and she said,
- 0:53I'll come talk about leadership to your community.
- 0:55Guys, please give a very warm welcome to Lynn Rowe.
- 0:58Lynn, welcome to our show today. Thank you so much for having me
- 1:01here today. Just because you think like I
- 1:05think which is leadership is not a one thing once and done and
- 1:11you have this philosophy that lead in three ways.
- 1:14Let's talk about what do you mean by that?
- 1:17So as a business owner, you, you have to be the CEO, but that
- 1:21means that you have to lead your business in three different
- 1:23ways. You have to be the person who
- 1:25leads the business itself. And that that is things like
- 1:29setting the direction for the business, the strategic plan for
- 1:32how you're going to get there, the systems and processes you
- 1:35need to put in place to get there.
- 1:37So it's leading the business itself.
- 1:39And the second way you have to be a leader is you have to lead
- 1:42your team. You lead your team so that they
- 1:45that everybody is on the same page, so that we all know what
- 1:48we're doing now, know what direction we're headed in.
- 1:51And you have to support them and encourage them and serve them so
- 1:57that they can become the best that they can be to serve your
- 2:01business for you. But the third way you have to
- 2:04lead is you have to lead yourself because there's nobody
- 2:06else to lead you. In order for your business to
- 2:10grow, you have to grow. You have to become a different
- 2:13person, the kind of person who has the skills of the person
- 2:17who, who would be running the bigger business that you want.
- 2:21So that's the three ways that I, I believe every small business
- 2:25owner has to lead. I love this so much, guys.
- 2:28It does sound like adulting. It is.
- 2:30I think, you know, we, we think that we get into this freedom
- 2:33concept of like there'll be no responsibilities and I can get
- 2:36up and do what I want and it's all just going to magically come
- 2:39together. And yet what we realized is we
- 2:41start to have reality sink in is that if it's going to be, it's
- 2:45up to me. And I love this direction of
- 2:48lead the business, lead the team, lead all of this into
- 2:52action. If you want to create the big
- 2:56ripples. And yet leadership is hard.
- 2:59How do you really? And you know, we often think of
- 3:02team as, you know, is it me or is it we, when we're in
- 3:05business, talk to me about leading teams because a lot of
- 3:08people, even solopreneurs and a lot of our audience will be
- 3:10solopreneurs, think I don't have a team.
- 3:12And I'm like, really? I think you do.
- 3:14Yes, you do. Yeah.
- 3:16So many people say I don't have a team, but actually many
- 3:19solopreneurs have a team. They just don't work full time
- 3:23for you. They are people that you
- 3:25subcontract to do some work here or there to help you out, to
- 3:29support you. And so you do have a team, but
- 3:31you're also part of the team yourself.
- 3:34You are the team. So if you think about it that
- 3:37way and you think about what did I get done today, if you were
- 3:43hiring yourself, would you wanna keep that person on?
- 3:46Did that person do enough today and every day to be to be worth
- 3:51paying what we're paying them? This is such an uncomfortable
- 3:55truth. I'm so glad you went there.
- 3:57Sometimes as the business leader, you have to have a
- 4:01performance improvement plan with yourself with.
- 4:04Yourself. Absolutely.
- 4:05Because you don't get paid to show up as an entrepreneur.
- 4:09You get paid when you get results and results that come in
- 4:12the form of clients being served money and exchanging hands,
- 4:15opportunity being created that lead to money exchanging hands.
- 4:18And I love that you see of team broadly.
- 4:21I'm curious in your business, who was the first person role
- 4:25responsibility that you saw really when you start to go, oh,
- 4:28I've got a team, when did that first happen for you?
- 4:30I think when I first hired A bookkeeper, I feel like for most
- 4:35small business owners, having someone to keep the books is the
- 4:40first step you need. Because most of us as business
- 4:43owners are not people trained in finance, trained in bookkeeping,
- 4:48trained in accounting. We don't really know that, that,
- 4:53that area. And when we try to do it
- 4:55ourselves, so often I see my clients, they, they get so mixed
- 4:59up with what they've got. One client said to me, can you
- 5:02please take a look at this the my books?
- 5:04Because I know I should have money, but I don't have money,
- 5:08right? And we did do a deep dive into
- 5:11his books, even though I'm not a bookkeeper, but I was able to
- 5:14look at his books and say, OK, first of all, you've got almost
- 5:18$100,000 out there waiting to be collected that you haven't
- 5:21collected, right? I've done all the work but I'm
- 5:26scared to get invoiced and paid. Exactly.
- 5:28And then you've got this other business, you've got a lot of
- 5:31business and he's still finding, and this was months ago and he's
- 5:34still finding places where he's bleeding money because he's not
- 5:39charging for services that they're doing that they're
- 5:41providing. So and, and the same client
- 5:45actually also said to me, I haven't raised my prices in
- 5:49seven years. Now.
- 5:51He's an IT professional. And, you know, the cost of
- 5:54everything has gone up in seven years, right?
- 5:57He hasn't raised his prices. So he was wondering, why am I
- 5:59not making money? Because I was making money.
- 6:02Well, of course you were, but that was seven years ago.
- 6:04You were making money. Today you're not.
- 6:06So, you know, it's a lot of things that a bookkeeper can
- 6:10look at your books and say, yeah, this is this is a place
- 6:13where you're losing money. This is a place where you're
- 6:15bleeding money, and this is a place where you can very quickly
- 6:20find some of that money that you're missing, right?
- 6:23I think it's important you talk that that is one of the first
- 6:25team members you, you personally brought on board.
- 6:28I, I think it was definitely in my days as well.
- 6:30And for me, I'm a bit unusual because I, I could do the P&L's,
- 6:34I could do that because of my education that came before my
- 6:37business, but I don't want to. No, I didn't want to.
- 6:41Do it. But I don't want to.
- 6:43I could. And I probably make her crazy
- 6:45because you know, when I see the panel, I'm like, why is there
- 6:47$6.70 in that journal entry? And she's like, really?
- 6:51I'm like, I know I shouldn't have anything in that category,
- 6:54but yeah, your financial people are part of your team.
- 6:58It's not just your virtual assistants, not just your tech
- 7:00stack, your financial people, whether they be a bookkeeper of
- 7:05CFSC, certified professional advisor, whether they are your
- 7:09tax people, they are your team. They're there to help guide your
- 7:13business. We supported the strategy and
- 7:16the vision and all of the action, and I love that you
- 7:18brought this to the table. So I wanna make the point also
- 7:21that they're part of your team, but that doesn't mean you just
- 7:25let them do it and run with it and you never look at it because
- 7:28that's the other thing that happens.
- 7:30I see a lot of people say, well, I've got my bookkeeper doing
- 7:33that, but they never look to see, is the bookkeeper putting
- 7:37things in the right buckets or is my money going to the right
- 7:41places and in the right amounts? You know, it's, it's really a
- 7:44conversation you should be having at least once a month
- 7:47with your bookkeeper. Is everything going where it's
- 7:50supposed to be? Because if you wait and you
- 7:52don't do it every month, Oh my God, it can be such a mess to
- 7:56try to fix, you know, at the end of the year. 100% What's
- 8:01interesting even beyond that is your leadership is not the same
- 8:07as advocating, right? So you can say I hired somebody
- 8:11and I delegated this, but leadership doesn't disappear
- 8:15simply because you now have team.
- 8:18You said it when we started, he said a big part of this is
- 8:20leading team. It's setting the oversight,
- 8:23setting the standards, checking yes, to a degree the work.
- 8:26Because at the end of the day, the buck stops with you because
- 8:29you're the leader of the organization and your ultimate
- 8:33job is the survivability of the organization.
- 8:35Money is a very big broad to play here.
- 8:39And if you're looking at your books at least once a month,
- 8:42you're able to see trends. You know this this trend is
- 8:46starting to happen bad or this trend is happening and that's
- 8:49good. And you can do more of the good
- 8:51and less of the bad, or you can stop the bad from bleeding
- 8:54before it becomes a really big deal.
- 8:58So, so that's another piece of it, just looking at things and
- 9:02looking for the trends. Because not everybody as a CEO
- 9:05that's part of your job is seeing the trends.
- 9:07Where, where are we headed and are we headed in the right
- 9:10direction? And not everyone, even your
- 9:13accountant and your bookkeeper, are trained to be looking at
- 9:16those kind of trends. For ultimate job and I, I think
- 9:19the CEO is an interesting mindset for solopreneurs or
- 9:22entrepreneurs in the emerging space because many of us never
- 9:25one comfortably think about that hat or have they really thought
- 9:27about what does the CEO do other than what we hear in the news,
- 9:30which is they get paid a lot of money and I always think.
- 9:32The time I don't want to be CEO, that's why.
- 9:37Can I say the CEO does have an amazing role to play?
- 9:40They have, they hire the brightest people around them
- 9:43that they can. They can, they can justify their
- 9:45pricing around and you get them to be the experts.
- 9:48You don't abdicate responsibility, but you hire
- 9:50smart people and when they need support, you're the oversight,
- 9:53right? You are the person still solving
- 9:55problems. You're looking for the patterns.
- 9:56You have that view that's a little further ahead than the
- 9:59day-to-day, but you still manage and oversee the day-to-day.
- 10:02And whether you wanted to aspire to being a CEO as a business
- 10:06owner, the buck stops with you. Use whatever title you like,
- 10:09it's the same. Yeah, it is.
- 10:12You have to be the person who looks at it all.
- 10:15Yes, and that that that is both a beautiful gift and going wow,
- 10:18who gave me all of the freedom you did day you said yes, yes.
- 10:24I want to talk about leading yourself though, because this
- 10:29this is sometimes the biggest challenge.
- 10:31It really is. It really is, and it's a lot of
- 10:36people try to do it totally on their own and I don't recommend
- 10:39that. I think, you know, finding
- 10:42groups, maybe mastermind groups, maybe a coach, finding other
- 10:46people who have been there and done that or can get, can start
- 10:52to look at you and your business from a different perspective is
- 10:55hugely helpful. And, and I, and I really believe
- 10:59they need to be someone who's not in your industry because
- 11:03it's relatively easy to find information about how other
- 11:07people in your industry are doing things.
- 11:10Because you go to an industry conference or whatever, you meet
- 11:13other people who do it and you naturally have those
- 11:15conversations. But in order to be able to think
- 11:19outside the box and look at different possibilities,
- 11:22different options, you really need somebody else with a
- 11:25different perspective. So that's why I say, yes, you
- 11:28can think about it for yourself. And I think you should, you
- 11:31should absolutely be thinking, OK, if I want to get to this
- 11:34next step, what is the next thing I need to learn?
- 11:38So one of my clients said, OK, I've gotten really good with my
- 11:41sales. Next thing I really need to
- 11:43learn is is marketing. You know, I need to learn it
- 11:46well enough so that I can delegate it.
- 11:48Yes. Yes, right now, well enough so
- 11:50that I can ask the right questions to the person that I'm
- 11:53delegating it to and so I can oversee it and make sure they're
- 11:56doing what I, what I'm intending to have done right.
- 12:00Um, so yeah, it's, it's that combination of what do I need to
- 12:06learn in order to get myself to the next level and to bring the
- 12:09business to the next level. It brings to mind this
- 12:13conversation while you're leading yourself and while
- 12:15you're leading team and you're leading advocates and other
- 12:18people in your community. This is the question that's
- 12:20coming to mind. The very thing is who's leading
- 12:22you? And I think sometimes the
- 12:23misnomer of people at the leadership level is I don't need
- 12:27somebody leading me. And I'm still saying what you
- 12:29loved, I loved it. Be independent, have your own
- 12:33opinion. But when you don't know what you
- 12:35don't know, somebody does need to lead you.
- 12:37And I love that you think of this broadly of somebody from a
- 12:40different industry that has a perspective that doesn't buy
- 12:43into the blind spots of your industry because just because
- 12:46it's done that way doesn't mean it will ensure survivability if
- 12:50all of you are falling off the same Cliff.
- 12:53And yes, and, and often if you just follow what everybody else
- 12:56is doing, you, you are no longer unique.
- 12:58You're vanilla, right? So in order for you to start
- 13:03doing things a little differently to make you unique,
- 13:06you need to listen to other perspectives and then find the
- 13:08one that works best for you. That doesn't mean you go blindly
- 13:12go off and do something else either.
- 13:14But maybe it's a combination of what some, some other industry
- 13:17is doing and what your industry is doing, and that's the best
- 13:20thing for you. So it takes a little figuring
- 13:23out and it takes time to focus on it.
- 13:26That's another thing that that entrepreneurs don't do is they
- 13:31don't very often give themselves time to focus on what's the big
- 13:35picture of my business, you know, developing the strategy of
- 13:39where we're headed and how we're going to get there.
- 13:41They're they're so busy, bogged down with the day-to-day.
- 13:46I got to do this and I've got to do that and I've got to get this
- 13:48done and get that done. And they don't take that step
- 13:51back and say, where are we going and how are we getting there?
- 13:55That's such a little piece of leadership.
- 13:58If you are not clear, your team doesn't have a hope in being
- 14:03clear. And I had a perspective that you
- 14:07had shared when we met recently and it was not just clear on
- 14:10where you are today, but the business you want to be down the
- 14:14road because that horizon piece is so important.
- 14:19And the leader, whether you're the CEO, owner, whatever like
- 14:22Tyler, you'd like is so important.
- 14:24But how did you learn the mistake or the potential risks
- 14:29of only managing who I was and who I am now?
- 14:32And how do we actually not fall trap to that?
- 14:36So I came from a strategic planning background, corporate
- 14:42and not-for-profit. And when I, when, when I first
- 14:47started this business, I, my, my daughter fell down some stairs
- 14:51and got a severe concussion at college.
- 14:54And she, of course, she called and said, can you bring me home?
- 14:58I, we said yes, of course. And the doctor said she'll be OK
- 15:02in about two weeks to two months.
- 15:03Well, in two months she was not OK.
- 15:06And then they said, well, two months, two years, and in two
- 15:11years she was not OK. She was still bumping into
- 15:15walls. She couldn't walk without
- 15:16assistance. She was falling down anyway, on
- 15:20and on. It was, it was a rough time.
- 15:23And this was just as I started my business and I, and I've had
- 15:26to think to myself, how do I build a business where I need to
- 15:30devote so much of my time to caring for my daughter and I, I
- 15:36fell back on my strategic planning.
- 15:38Strategic planning for bigger businesses can be similar to
- 15:42strategic planning for a smaller business.
- 15:46And so I started with myself and the question I asked is what is
- 15:51the lifestyle I want to be living and how do I design my
- 15:54business to support that lifestyle?
- 15:58So for me at the time, it was how do I have a lifestyle where
- 16:03I can still be there to support my daughter and, and at that
- 16:07point they were saying three years to maybe forever she would
- 16:10be like this. And so I, I started planning for
- 16:15how do I build my business and still have this ability to get a
- 16:20stay, stay with her. So Fast forward, it took eight
- 16:25years for her to come back to normal are relatively to normal
- 16:3110 years after the fall and the concussion, she was able to go
- 16:34back to college and she finished college about a year ago as a
- 16:39she went back to college as a 28 year old freshman and and
- 16:42graduated about a year ago. So, so the story ended up being
- 16:46a happy story. So the second part of that is
- 16:50every year you have to ask yourself, what is the lifestyle
- 16:53I want to be living and how does my business support that, right?
- 16:57So my lifestyle no longer is. How can I be there for my
- 17:00daughter because she's independent at this point, But
- 17:03it's other things, you know, how, how can I have time now to
- 17:06travel? How can I other things that I
- 17:08want to do? So, so that's a place to start.
- 17:11And that's where I start with myself and with all of my
- 17:14clients. Heard Lynn, how are you doing
- 17:16this, taking care of your, your daughter and doing, you know,
- 17:19and building a business at the same time.
- 17:21And they said, can you do that with me?
- 17:23So that's how I started building my practice of doing strategic
- 17:29planning with entrepreneurs and helping them build the business
- 17:33that supported the lifestyle that they wanted.
- 17:35I love this so much and your goals will change and your
- 17:40capabilities shift in ebb on life, life and cause all of us.
- 17:44I mean, I'm so grateful it became a good story for your
- 17:47daughter. There are that isn't always the
- 17:49case. The Silver Linings don't always
- 17:51arrive in the timelines and the ways we expect.
- 17:54And I think the biggest shift in your momentum comes from what do
- 17:58I want it to be and what investments do I need to make
- 18:01today? What support do I need today?
- 18:03What team do I need today to get me to that place?
- 18:07Because if your business some clothes, if you need to step
- 18:09away, you have not structured a business, you've structured a
- 18:13job and yet you don't have the benefits and safety of
- 18:15employment that maybe you would have in a corporate environment
- 18:18and that's a high risk strategy. It is in my case, I could
- 18:23probably, I probably couldn't have maintained a corporate job
- 18:26at all because I needed to spend so much time with my daughter
- 18:29and I was able to do that. So that was one of the nice
- 18:33things about being an entrepreneur is you can make
- 18:36your own time. You can lead yourself to create
- 18:40what you want. Yes, that's the ultimate freedom
- 18:43of entrepreneurship. Yes.
- 18:45I'd love to ask all of my OHP. Go ahead.
- 18:46Yeah, I was going to say the more money you earn as as an
- 18:50entrepreneur, the more options, the more freedom you have to do
- 18:54the things you want to do. Yes.
- 18:55So I always say to clients, don't stay at the really lean
- 18:58part of this equation. I want you to accelerate past it
- 19:02so that you actually do create the freedoms and you have the
- 19:04resources and you have the fun factor of what do I want now?
- 19:09Well, we want to go do this in our business resources to do
- 19:12that and team and leadership around us that says I'll step
- 19:15in. Exactly.
- 19:18In the fun leagues, I love it. Then I want to ask all my guests
- 19:21this because I think it's important to see how diverse
- 19:23success looks like and how we choose to get there.
- 19:26So what are you doing right now in your business to amplify it,
- 19:29to find clients and to create the life that you want at the
- 19:32success that you defined? So two things.
- 19:36One is I attend conferences where my ideal client is likely
- 19:42to be hanging out, right? I love to travel and it gives me
- 19:46the opportunity to travel and I usually try to attack a day or
- 19:49two onto whatever conference I'm going to to enjoy. 100%.
- 19:54So that's, that's one thing I'm doing.
- 19:56And the other thing I'm doing is setting up my own events so that
- 20:00I can I can meet with people and talk to them for more than just
- 20:05a few minutes. So that so that.
- 20:07They have an opportunity to get to know me and I have an
- 20:10opportunity to get to know them. I love it.
- 20:12You get to curate your own community and you get to curate
- 20:15your own people. I love that so much.
- 20:17And I think it's such a big shift happening right now.
- 20:21And I I, I was cringing the other day in my social media
- 20:26where the current mantra is swinging from you needed
- 20:31funnels, you needed tech, you needed me, you needed your
- 20:33systems really complicated, complicated, complicated to
- 20:36relationships with the new capital and like relationships
- 20:38were always the. Capital always there.
- 20:41They were always critical. We've always built our business
- 20:44on people. We've always been gotten into
- 20:46rooms, we've been willing to travel.
- 20:47And that's of course how you and I met was many miles away from
- 20:50both of us live brought together by a common interest with
- 20:53different businesses, different backgrounds and saying I'm going
- 20:55to learn. From you exactly.
- 20:57And I've got something maybe that can help you along the way
