- 0:00Taylor.
- 0:01Oh, what a goal by Peter Taylor.
- 0:21Welcome to team of the 80s.
- 0:22My name is Gary Spencer.
- 0:24This is the Andy Gray interview.
- 0:27Andy, great to have you on, mate.
- 0:28How you doing?
- 0:29It's a pleasure, Gal, to be honest with you.
- 0:31I've been kind of clucking for you to ask me to come on your podcast because obviously, you know, it's about the 80s, and obviously we were there as schoolboys there.
- 0:43So all the players I see you interview, like, they were my idols back in the day, especially Burridge, Nico, and they all gave us time.
- 0:55And that was the beautiful thing about that group.
- 0:58There was a few were a bit moody, but the majority of them were like, top, top, top guys.
- 1:06And, yeah, I mean, I learned so much watching that team.
- 1:13Yeah.
- 1:14But do you remember where we used to sit, Gal?
- 1:16Do you remember where we used to sit on match days?
- 1:21Yeah, yeah, I.
- 1:22I vaguely do.
- 1:23Yeah, I vaguely do.
- 1:25I've got two or three memories of you, Andy, at that age.
- 1:28And they always make me smile.
- 1:30And they make me smile because you went on to be such a player, you know, and.
- 1:35And when.
- 1:36When I remember you.
- 1:38Well, first of all, I remember your sheepskin.
- 1:40I told you about that.
- 1:41Yeah.
- 1:42You know, and then one day we were playing.
- 1:46Now, I just want to put it out there, by the way, that I was played for a very short time and I was outed.
- 1:53I ended up at Sun United.
- 1:54But Andy was training one day over at Mitchum, and he.
- 1:58He come on the pitch and he was always a bundle of energy, right.
- 2:01And he was always giving it to everybody.
- 2:02He was just giving it to people.
- 2:05And he got the ball and he nutmegged me.
- 2:07And then for the next 10 minutes, I heard about the nutmeg.
- 2:10But for me, my only claim to fame is I'm not making back, but that's about it.
- 2:15That's as far as it got for me for football.
- 2:17He went on.
- 2:18He went on to play for England.
- 2:19That was my claim to fam.
- 2:22But the.
- 2:22The point I was saying, where we used to sit, where the dugout was, they used to have that long bench.
- 2:28Yes.
- 2:28And.
- 2:29And we all used to sit there next to the manager.
- 2:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:33And that was so inciting.
- 2:36Watching the game and seeing, obviously, like, you put, like seeing them play and, like, thinking, yeah, I would love, because you was there, you weren't on in the stand.
- 2:47He was actually pitch side.
- 2:49So you got that.
- 2:51That visual that this is what I would love to be doing one day.
- 2:55You guys were a little bit older than me, so, like, the Likes of Gary Grabham who was like Arnie Warren's superstar and he wasn't.
- 3:04He was a great striker but back in the day it wasn't about speed.
- 3:09Later on that's what kind of held Gary back because it was because he was a good old up man and, and yet he had all the techniques.
- 3:18Do you know what I mean?
- 3:19Where a lot of players today, like, no disrespect to Mateta, is it?
- 3:24Matata for Palace.
- 3:26Yeah, they can't hold the ball.
- 3:29My favorite.
- 3:31Yeah, no, I've seen him sort of like coat him a few times.
- 3:34No, I mean at the end of the day you're a good judge because like you've seen players like David swindlers.
- 3:42Wasn't the greatest, but he knew how to do the runs.
- 3:46And I, I just think in, in the modern day footballers, a lot of them don't know their craft because remember our coach, Johnny Cartwright?
- 3:55Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:57I mean what that guy put in my head from 11 up until 13, that always stuck with me.
- 4:05Do you know what I mean?
- 4:06How to play overlaps and you know, but, but they, they call it different things now, don't they?
- 4:12Yeah, they do, yeah.
- 4:14Shutting down has become a press.
- 4:16But, but, but I don't know what happened but like a journalist became a journal and a linesman became a Lionel and it's like I'll just like they are what they are.
- 4:27Like we, why, why do we have to repackage everything?
- 4:29You know, like you shut somebody down.
- 4:32Oh, but the high press, the low press, come on.
- 4:36No, Mateta, I don't know.
- 4:38You might have been there, Andy.
- 4:39This day palace played West Bromwich Albion.
- 4:42Right?
- 4:43We're gonna just talk about center forwards quickly.
- 4:45Yeah.
- 4:46Palace played West Bromwich Albion and big Cyril was up top for West Bromwich Albion.
- 4:51Right.
- 4:52And everything.
- 4:53I don't know if you saw that game, but everything that day they stuck up to him and he stuck it and he knocked it off and he bullied people and like.
- 5:02And that to me, if you're that style of center forward as Mateta is, that's what you should be doing.
- 5:08If it's going to go up to him, at least hold it up, at least make it stick.
- 5:13Right.
- 5:17Back in our day we would have a reference of a player.
- 5:22You would know players who would have certain traits to get what I'm trying to say.
- 5:27I think if he had a chance he could get in because back in the day a lot of trading was between sort of like second, third, getting the chance.
- 5:39But what I'm Saying the modern day player is what is their reference to look at?
- 5:45Because I mean as a center forward I'd be thinking, well, who would I really be looking at to sort of like say I would base my game.
- 5:55If you've got certain physicalities about you, I.
- 5:57E like mateta, then at least play.
- 6:00If you're going to play with your bat to go hold it up.
- 6:02Because if you're not scoring goals and you're not holding it up, then what are you doing?
- 6:05Right, that's all.
- 6:07Let's go back to you because this is about you, ain't about them.
- 6:12You started off at palace as we said, and, and you were, you were a youngster but then you, you left the club for a while and you went into non league.
- 6:23No, what happened was they said to me that I was going to get my apprenticeship and remember Johnny Griffin, God bless his soul.
- 6:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:36Well, basically Johnny left that that summer and went to Brentford, right?
- 6:41So.
- 6:42But Johnny Griffin was the first.
- 6:44He brought me to palace when I was 11.
- 6:47So when I got to 15 and a half, nearly 16, Arnie Warren said, oh, we're not going to give you the apprenticeship.
- 6:58So Johnny Griffin rang me, he said, I would like you to bring you to Brentford.
- 7:03So I went to Brentford, but where I was living from, from Brixton to Brentford, you've got to take two buses.
- 7:11After four weeks I got sacked because I kept getting in late.
- 7:19So Freddie Callahan and Chopper Harris said, if you come late one more time, we're gonna like cancel your contract.
- 7:29Anyway, this fateful morning I got up, the buses were running very late.
- 7:36Back in the 80s, hindsight's the great thing.
- 7:41I should have, not even I should have.
- 7:43When I got there and I knew I was going to be late, I should have just sort like gone back home and said I was sick.
- 7:49So I get in there and they went, that's it.
- 7:51Boom, bang, I'm out of the game at 16.
- 7:56I think I got paid once.
- 7:58I didn't play football for a year.
- 8:00I was just bumming around my area doing nothing.
- 8:03And then one of my friends said to me, why don't you come and play for our team at Kings Cross?
- 8:13It's called the TV Times.
- 8:16But all of these guys were like older players, so they would have been playing pro, not look pro herbs, amateur football.
- 8:28But they've stopped playing.
- 8:29So it was like a vets type of match.
- 8:32So I was playing on the, I was playing there every Tuesday.
- 8:35But I used to like it because back in the day, like I'm.
- 8:39I'm 17.
- 8:40Like.
- 8:41Like my cherry wasn't pop.
- 8:43So we used to drive past all the.
- 8:45The Alfies, King's Cross, you know, like,.
- 8:52It's not really about the football, is it?
- 8:55No, no.
- 8:57I never put any pressure on myself, girl.
- 8:59Yeah.
- 9:00So it wasn't like I was trying to get back into football, because once you start playing in vets football, you're a million miles away from that.
- 9:08Of course.
- 9:08Yeah.
- 9:09But a lot of them were playing for Cryptian Casuals.
- 9:13After about three or four weeks, we played a Greek side and I.
- 9:17And I was playing at the back at the time, like, as a sweeper and we had.
- 9:22But I was, like, coming out from sweeper and just like, beating three or four players and.
- 9:27Do you know what I mean?
- 9:28Top corner.
- 9:29Anyway, so one game, we play the other side.
- 9:33Their manager said, you've got a ringer there.
- 9:37You've got a professional footballer playing.
- 9:40And that kind of, like when they said it to me, what they said in the dressroom, that kind of perked me up, I think.
- 9:46Yeah, yeah.
- 9:48So then one of the guys, Parksy, said to me, why don't you go to the Crimping Casuals?
- 9:57So that's where I met Martin Tyler.
- 10:01Right, Right.
- 10:02So I was playing for their bits.
- 10:04So that was on a.
- 10:05That was on a Thursday.
- 10:06So I played Tuesday and the Thursday.
- 10:09But we used to play against Oxford University, Cambridge University, at Sanders, but it was all Martin Tyler, Jerry Sincedale.
- 10:21Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:25But I got really pounding with him, so I used to go through his house in Wandsworth because he used to live near the prison.
- 10:32Right.
- 10:33So I got kind of friendly with him.
- 10:34And then they said, you've got to go and play with the first team.
- 10:40So they spoke with Billy Smith, and then I went and trained on a Thursday night there, and then I played again and I sort of, like, done really well.
- 10:52And then Bill went, no, we got to sign this guy.
- 10:55On the Sunday, I was playing for the commentators, right.
- 10:59Wow.
- 11:00I didn't know any of this.
- 11:01Great.
- 11:01Wow.
- 11:02Yeah, yeah.
- 11:02So I was playing for the commentators.
- 11:04So all the commentators back in the day, I was playing with them on the.
- 11:08On a Sunday, right?
- 11:10And they were saying, you're too good to be here.
- 11:12So everyone.
- 11:13So from that first one, getting it on the Tuesday at the TV times, and everywhere I was playing, they were saying, you're too good to be here.
- 11:23Wow.
- 11:23Let me just stop you for a minute.
- 11:24So when you did play, when you made it, that.
- 11:27That must have been really Surreal for those guys thinking, well we were kicking about a couple years ago we played.
- 11:34A preseason game against Tottenham and Glenn Odle was watching on the side but they had like Danny Thomas, they had Mark Falco, they had a few real good players playing in this, this game, right?
- 11:54We played casuals, I think we drew two all.
- 11:57I scored one and then apparently Glenodo was on a, a radio station and said I've seen one of the best non league players in years.
- 12:13Wow.
- 12:15Basically I think couple got the job and they were coming back from a match in the Ron Nodes, right.
- 12:22And they had the station on and then they came to watch me.
- 12:27Wow.
- 12:27Well that's a great story.
- 12:29The game I did one thing, I tried to score from the halfway line within like I think the third, first three, four minutes, right?
- 12:40Straight away after the game, he's in the dressing room and that was it.
- 12:44I was, I was signed.
- 12:46One of the reasons why you're such a great guest is because I was having a quick conversation with Bright a few, few months ago and he was talking about the team of the 80s and stuff and he said,
- 12:55well, really go.
- 12:56He said the team of the 80s was actually our team.
- 12:59We had that success, not the 80s team.
- 13:01And yeah, yeah, I mean the team that you played in, Andy did, I mean they, they finished third and you know, you had the cup run, etc.
- 13:12Etc.
- 13:13But I always felt that the seeds were set in the era that you first joined the club, you know, in the late 70s, in the early 80s.
- 13:23That's when the seeds, that's when the club started to change.
- 13:26You know, that's why I wanted to do these series like team of the 80s because I felt up until then, I started watching palace when I was five years old.
- 13:35So that was 1967.
- 13:37Right.
- 13:38It's a very different club.
- 13:40You know it.
- 13:42When Malcolm Allison came along, he changed the whole club.
- 13:45Right?
- 13:45And then as you know, when John Cartwright was there and Terry was there and Arnie was there, they started looking like all the other boys have all said the same thing.
- 13:56They started looking for real talent all over the country.
- 14:00There were some great players there, great young players there.
- 14:03But, but because everybody was young there, you know, it was tough.
- 14:09It was tough, you know, and, and you know, you, we're talking about forward Les Carter.
- 14:17Let's cut.
- 14:17Was a great.
- 14:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:19You know, this was great.
- 14:20Up top, you know what he, he played what.
- 14:26Yeah.
- 14:26Even Lindsay.
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:27Steve Lee.
- 14:28Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:30I see Lindsay every now and again on Facebook.
- 14:33Yeah, he's still knocking about.
- 14:34Yeah, I love, see, I, I, I love those little conversations, you know, because I think we all as human beings love nostalgia, you know, but when, but when you see, like, for instance, like I said to you earlier,
- 14:47when I see your career and I saw what you did with your career, it makes me very happy, you know, because, hell, football's a tough career.
- 14:57It's a tough career to do and to play at the highest level, when that's something you love, which you did, makes me very happy for you, you know, all the boys, because it's so competitive.
- 15:10Yeah, but Gal, you know what?
- 15:11Like, I hear what Bright is, what Bright is saying, but I think I, I can answer this honestly.
- 15:19That side, what we used to watch was better than Copples team.
- 15:28Watching Peter Nicholas, watching Jerry Murphy, watching a bit of Stevie Kember.
- 15:36And Peter Nicholas was a top, top, top, top midfield player.
- 15:43Wow.
- 15:43I be all, add it all.
- 15:46And when you look at Kenny Sampson, right, you look at Fish.
- 15:54Yeah, but what Fish had, he had determination and, and he could come up with the odd goal.
- 16:01And then you had Jim Cannon.
- 16:05He was a top, top center off Billy Gilbert.
- 16:10Yeah, Bill, there was no one better than Billy Gilbert.
- 16:13Yeah.
- 16:13Right.
- 16:14So I've gone, I've gone the back line and John Burridge.
- 16:19So I know they could play.
- 16:21They could play for sure.
- 16:23Look at that back line to our team.
- 16:28You know what back line you would have, you would have that back line, of course.
- 16:33Right.
- 16:33The midfield.
- 16:35Well, I was a combination of all that.
- 16:40Midfield.
- 16:42Yes.
- 16:42Do you understand?
- 16:43Because, like as I said, I started as a center forward.
- 16:46Yes.
- 16:46And then played out wide.
- 16:48So when they talk about being a, a professional footballer.
- 16:54Well, I, I believe I was a professional footballer because I could play in more than one position.
- 16:58Andy, when you played in the middle there, you had, you had Pardu in there.
- 17:03No, no, no, no.
- 17:06He was the babysitter.
- 17:07He would come in if, if Jeff was injured or I was injured.
- 17:11You, Jeff, and then John Salako outlet.
- 17:15Okay.
- 17:16And Eddie McGoldrick.
- 17:19But Eddie done, he done better when we all left because he, he could breathe.
- 17:24What Brighton didn't tell you about our setup?
- 17:28There was no togetherness.
- 17:30What?
- 17:31Right, right, right, right.
- 17:32We were all different individuals, you know what I mean?
- 17:34And like, it wasn't clicky, but it wasn't as I knew the 80 side to be.
- 17:45So I would come in, do my job, and I'll be out.
- 17:49I think he was the only one there.
- 17:51Jim was in that side, though, when he with you.
- 17:55Jerry was there for a Little bit when we beat relegation.
- 17:59I mean, Nico's the same.
- 18:00Nico.
- 18:00Nico said, Nico felt that the, the 80s side was like on a different planet to that side that you played in it, you know, he said, come on, Gal.
- 18:09He said, come on, there's a football side but you can't take it away.
- 18:14That from a fan's perspective, like they're always going to say, yeah, but that year they finished third and they got that far in the FA cup and blah, blah, blah.
- 18:23So for me, around that time, love, you know, I was very close to Stevie, love.
- 18:28So I was watching Millwall a lot in that time.
- 18:31Yeah.
- 18:33So I, I honestly, I can't comment.
- 18:35I only saw what I saw, bits and pieces.
- 18:37And as you know, if you're watching bits and pieces, you're not really going.
- 18:40To find out if you're being honest.
- 18:44It's like me breaking down the team.
- 18:47I'm saying me and Jeff could have competed against Nico.
- 18:52Jerry.
- 18:53Yes.
- 18:54And say Steve Kember.
- 18:57Yeah.
- 18:58Or Jerry Francis or anyone in.
- 18:59Or Jerry Francis.
- 19:00What I'm saying to you, like, because me and Jeff were like box to box.
- 19:04Me and Jeff could compete against that 80s midfield all day long.
- 19:08All day long.
- 19:09Yes, but.
- 19:10Right.
- 19:10He developed his game later on.
- 19:15So I couldn't put, say, Ian against Walshy.
- 19:22Really.
- 19:22Wow.
- 19:23And I love Woolsey.
- 19:24But.
- 19:24But she technically was better at that stage.
- 19:28Yeah, yeah.
- 19:29Because the game changed for Ian when something clicked in him, when he, he got more aggressive.
- 19:39You tell me, Gal, of you watching football back in the day where someone who's 5 foot 7, 5 foot 8, who's bullying 6 foot center ass.
- 19:52Yeah, no, yeah, yeah.
- 19:55Bright.
- 19:55He wasn't better than David Swindler's without.
- 19:59And for me, Mark was very intelligent, a very intelligent player.
- 20:04And well, you know.
- 20:07You know what's really funny?
- 20:08You and Nico said exactly the same thing about Swindy.
- 20:13And that's when he was underrated, by the way.
- 20:16No, he wasn't.
- 20:17But what I'm saying to you.
- 20:18But Gal, this is what I'm saying.
- 20:19Going back again, his reference, I, I can look at games and watching swindlers.
- 20:26He wasn't a confident guy.
- 20:28There was no arrogance about him or nothing.
- 20:31Mark was very smart in his play because he did.
- 20:36He wasn't the fastest, but he could, he could score a goal brightly.
- 20:40All brighties mantra was, I want to score, I want to score, I want to score.
- 20:46But for me, as I say, the back line in the 80s, if we had that backline, I think we could.
- 20:57Have won the League, very possibly.
- 20:58Because, I mean, that year, I mean, we were.
- 21:04We were good.
- 21:05Do you know what I mean?
- 21:05But we were missing pieces.
- 21:07And he done it on a shoestring.
- 21:09Do you know what I mean?
- 21:10Okay, okay.
- 21:11Leicester done it a few years later, won it.
- 21:14But we never had the backup that Leicester had, like Amaris.
- 21:18You know what I mean?
- 21:19Someone.
- 21:21Backup, is he?
- 21:22Exactly.
- 21:24But when I look at palace, even, like, palace won three cup competitions, I mean, you might think I'm arsh, but cup competitions, if your name's on it, you're gonna win it.
- 21:37Yeah, you're preaching to the choir.
- 21:39I mean, you see me go on Twitter on things I say, and I understand it from a fan's perspective.
- 21:44I do.
- 21:45And I'm a fan, too, right?
- 21:46I'm.
- 21:47Listen, I'm a fan, too.
- 21:48It's fantastic for me to sit here, watch palace, but when I watch palace now, I watch them still with the memories of me watching them as a fan, and I'm pleased for them, but not in the same way.
- 22:02And, you know, football changed for me a long time ago when.
- 22:06When I saw players losing on a Saturday and then going out to a nightclub Saturday night or being in Dubai on a Sunday and having a laugh and a joke, Football after that didn't dominate my life.
- 22:19It was gonna.
- 22:20It wasn't gonna spoil my life.
- 22:22When I see.
- 22:23When I see fans on Twitter and they're upset and they've done their dough and they're upset all week and they're pissed off, they need to wake up like that.
- 22:32Okay, don't let it.
- 22:34Don't.
- 22:34Don't let it affect your life, because it ain't affecting theirs too much, trust me.
- 22:38And Andy, again, you played at the highest level.
- 22:41There's very few footballers that have that much passion and desire in them where they go home and by Sunday, Monday, they're still hurting.
- 22:51Whereas there's so many fans, particularly up north, particularly where football is everything, that.
- 22:58That really ruins their life, you know?
- 23:01Yeah, yeah.
- 23:02And that's.
- 23:03That.
- 23:03That.
- 23:04That's such a shame to me.
- 23:05You know, the.
- 23:06The.
- 23:07I was talking to Stevie Love on the pod, and I don't know if you saw it where back in.
- 23:13Of course, everything has changed with.
- 23:14With this.
- 23:15With the cell phone and a camera on your phone.
- 23:17Everything has changed.
- 23:18But, you know, the lads used to go in the Glaziers after the game, have a chat with the fans, walk from the car park into the ground, have a chat with the fans.
- 23:29Yeah.
- 23:30These days, again, I see the palace fans on Twitter they're upset that Mateta's going and SARS going.
- 23:39Listen, mate, football's changed.
- 23:41Sara and Mateta don't give a where they play.
- 23:43They're going to play where they get the most though.
- 23:46And they're in what they feel is a better team.
- 23:49They have no allegiance to South London or the fans or Sellers Park.
- 23:52It's just another club to them.
- 23:54Whereas back in the 80s, in the 70s, where you came from South London, or at least you may have come from the uk, yeah, it meant something to pay for Crystal palace.
- 24:03You know what I mean?
- 24:04That's my, that's my viewpoint, Andy.
- 24:06You're absolutely right.
- 24:07Gallon.
- 24:08I, I think at the end of the day someone's getting 120 grand a week or 70 grand a week, right?
- 24:17That's not the same.
- 24:19He's not the same.
- 24:21Because at the end of the day, if they lose 21 at the end of the month, he's still getting his readies.
- 24:26The football's changed so much that players who not even playing 20 games are getting 4 million pound contracts.
- 24:38I know, I know.
- 24:40And they play one season in their bang average and they're okay for life.
- 24:43Back in the day you could watch your, your professional team train, right.
- 24:49And the people that would come are so respectful.
- 24:54You never heard of anyone being thrown out of the, the training ground or being too loud, but because the players and the people are so respectful, they could come so close to where you're actually gonna go in the
- 25:06door and have your cup of tea in that and be respectful.
- 25:11But now they, this big gates, they can't even see inside.
- 25:19When I was at palace and we used to walk out the dressing room and then see our families in the, in the glazes or wherever that, that place is.
- 25:28Where the door is.
- 25:29Yeah, that little bar.
- 25:32Yeah.
- 25:32Well, you're, you're, you're mingling with somebody who's paid back in the day.
- 25:38I don't know, 15 quid a seat.
- 25:40Correct.
- 25:40Yeah.
- 25:41So good, good game or bad game, whatever the, the result is, you're there mingling with that person.
- 25:49Yeah.
- 25:49It's not like that anymore.
- 25:50No, no.
- 25:52The money's changed it, the TVs changed it, the cell phones changed it.
- 25:57Right.
- 25:58Because again, as you know, I remember Fish being in the glazes.
- 26:03He'd have a, you know, you played with them, he'd have a cigarette.
- 26:09Imagine that nowadays in the glazes with a lager and a cigarette, you'd get slaughtered on Sunday, you get slaughtered Saturday night.
- 26:15It'd be on all over social media.
- 26:17So I understand why there's a little bit more protection for players.
- 26:22But all I'm saying is, is it's become such a disparity.
- 26:26Me, Phil Philoder.
- 26:29Yeah.
- 26:30When I was starting working, I was carrying bricks for Phil's building firm.
- 26:34In the summer we had Boily, we had Gavin Nebula, we had him on the site carrying brick.
- 26:40That's in the summer because, you know, a bit more extra dough and it kept them fit.
- 26:46Yeah.
- 26:46That's how much the game's changed.
- 26:48That was the first division.
- 26:49Imagine that.
- 26:49Now in the Premier League, the case is on the side carrying a few bricks.
- 26:53Imagine.
- 26:55They're on super yachts.
- 26:57My mum, because my mum was trying to make extra dough.
- 27:01I don't know if you know this.
- 27:03So we lived in a council flat in Croydon, but it was too bed.
- 27:07My mum, in the end she took in David Fry, goalkeeper.
- 27:12Okay.
- 27:13Yeah.
- 27:14So David.
- 27:15David was.
- 27:16Those are great days, man.
- 27:18David was living with me when he made his debut against Man United and then he played against Arsenal.
- 27:25Yeah.
- 27:25Again me, Andy, how much the game has changed.
- 27:30Right.
- 27:30Imagine playing Man United and Arsenal these days, right.
- 27:33As a keeper, you're not staying in a council house in Croydon.
- 27:37As and I.
- 27:39He had a single bed in my bedroom.
- 27:41Right.
- 27:41He was renting the club but paying 25, 30 quid a week.
- 27:44I don't know.
- 27:45I can't remember.
- 27:46My mum was making a bit of extra dough and then when David left, Gavin came in.
- 27:51Gavin Neblin.
- 27:51Go on, Miguel.
- 27:52Just quickly.
- 27:54Do you think the game's changed for the better?
- 27:58No, I.
- 27:59I was watching.
- 28:01I was watching the chat with Soonness and.
- 28:03And Dalglish and then after that I watched.
- 28:08Hell, I was some of Dalglish's goals.
- 28:10What a player.
- 28:11And if you look at any.
- 28:12You look at any of those games.
- 28:1570S and 80s.
- 28:16Silky said the same.
- 28:17Silky was talking about fitness and speed and stuff and he broke it down like only Silky would break it down.
- 28:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:25You know he gave you the dove visitor stats and it's like.
- 28:30But he was right.
- 28:31And I think what it is like anything marketing.
- 28:37There's so much dumb in football that it has to be marketed a certain way from sky and whatever that the Premier Leagues to be all and end all.
- 28:44Like we talked about Fish earlier and Paul.
- 28:47Paul Ishwood, for those who don't know was Fish.
- 28:50I was old enough or I'm old enough to remember when he started.
- 28:53And he played up front.
- 28:55Yeah.
- 28:56And then he went to right back.
- 28:59But what I'm saying is the reason I'm using my age as a reference here is because football wasn't sold in that way then.
- 29:06Now it's.
- 29:06Now it's sold you that.
- 29:08It's the greatest thing.
- 29:09It's the greatest brand.
- 29:10And this.
- 29:10And it is branded very well.
- 29:13But the game, the game itself, I don't think was technically better or more entertaining now than it was then.
- 29:21When people say, oh, the game is much fitter now, is it?
- 29:25Bollocks.
- 29:26It's slower.
- 29:27You're trying to tell me.
- 29:29If I'm saying that I'm.
- 29:31Box.
- 29:31The box.
- 29:33When we're defending and then we counter attack, I have got to be in the opposition now.
- 29:39And then when the opposition have got it, I've then got a run back.
- 29:44Yeah.
- 29:45Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 29:49Today's football.
- 29:50The goalkeeper rolls it out to the right back or the left back or gives it to the center up.
- 29:55He pops it into the midfield guy.
- 29:57He does a pirouette, gives it out wide, but he doesn't then run into the opposition box.
- 30:07So he's holding.
- 30:08He's holding there.
- 30:08Yeah, yeah.
- 30:09It's just sold in there.
- 30:11So there's no threat.
- 30:12When I went to Crimson Casual, I said to my coaches, I want to play four, four, two.
- 30:17I want two wingers.
- 30:19All I want my wingers to do is get the ball in the box.
- 30:22The more times you're crossing that ball in the box, the more chance you've got a scoring.
- 30:26But they can't grasp that.
- 30:28I'm saying to him, I don't want you coming back.
- 30:30I want you to up the line, up the line.
- 30:33And then I said, my midfield man, give it to him.
- 30:36And you don't need to have more than two touch.
- 30:38Just give it to him.
- 30:39And then follow, follow, follow on.
- 30:41Let me put this to you.
- 30:42If you're one nil down and you've got two minutes left, what do teams do to get the.
- 30:52To get the equalizer?
- 30:54They.
- 30:55They go long, right?
- 30:56Yeah, yeah.
- 30:58So if you want to go long to get the equalizer, why don't you start from long to then get in front two or three.
- 31:06Great point.
- 31:08Great point.
- 31:09Great point.
- 31:10That's a great point, Andy.
- 31:13You know what I mean?
- 31:14It's like, why you waiting for the last two minutes to go long?
- 31:20So say like Man City is playing, say Burnley.
- 31:24You're telling me that I'm Burnley, but I want to not ask questions of Man City.
- 31:33You've got your two wingers, you've got your two guys up front and you've got your midfield.
- 31:38Why, why don't want to roll out and play from the back when we're not technically good enough to do that.
- 31:45So for me I'm just go long.
- 31:48Go long.
- 31:49Yeah, yeah.
- 31:51Bypass it.
- 31:52Bypass de Bruyne.
- 31:55Exactly.
- 31:57But, but it doesn't that make sense.
- 31:59But, but I think where football's gone crazy is that this brand that you said that teams who haven't got the ability to play to their strengths and buy players one big one, one small one, but they don't.
- 32:20As you're talking to me, I'm thinking when Wimbledon were in the first division they didn't.
- 32:25They didn't play that way.
- 32:26They played their way.
- 32:27Right, exactly.
- 32:28They were going to knock it up top to fash fashion was going to hold it off.
- 32:31Yeah, yeah.
- 32:32You're talking about.
- 32:33But they survived playing that way.
- 32:36They didn't want to.
- 32:36They weren't trying to play like Liverpool or Man United.
- 32:39Right.
- 32:40But if you look at Liverpool when, when they were a Rolls Royce of a team, that's how teams are playing now.
- 32:47So that's how far Liverpool were.
- 32:50Yeah, that's how far they were.
- 32:52Because that's outside want to play only like.
- 32:57But even if you look at Arsenal, Arsenal or Arsenal are like a.
- 33:02A mashup of all different styles.
- 33:05They've got all different Arsenal right now.
- 33:08Are on a different.
- 33:09They're on a different planet and they.
- 33:10Yeah.
- 33:11When palace said Bentecki.
- 33:15Oh Bentecki.
- 33:17The worst thing he did was sign up palace because as soon as he signed the palace the, the taps were turned off because he wasn't going to get the service.
- 33:26You know, listen, I'm going to get pelt as he.
- 33:29But it's fine.
- 33:31He played up top with Zaha.
- 33:32If you play up top with Zaha you don't know if the cross is coming in.
- 33:35How many times have I said that?
- 33:37You don't know.
- 33:37Right.
- 33:38Because when Sam.
- 33:39When, when, when Benteki played for Sam.
- 33:42He's one.
- 33:43Ipsam wants the balls coming in the box and he started scoring goals.
- 33:47What a shock when he's up.
- 33:49When he was up top there with Zaha and you don't ever know Andy and you've played up front.
- 33:54If you don't know if that cross is coming in, you don't make your runs anymore.
- 33:58You don't.
- 33:58You go this right.
- 34:00True enough.
- 34:01Yeah, but.
- 34:01Yeah but Gal, you see there's a flip side to that.
- 34:04This is where the games change.
- 34:06In my day and your day, the center forward would have grabbed you at half time and said, if you don't get that right, there's going to be trouble.
- 34:19Zaha is the.
- 34:22The poster boy.
- 34:24So there was no one in that team would have ever done that to him.
- 34:32But back in our day, that would have happened.
- 34:35Yeah.
- 34:36Yeah.
- 34:36And also then, Andy, what we forget the pictures you guys played on.
- 34:41Oh, you had to be a player to play on those.
- 34:44Like now they, they.
- 34:46They could play in their shoes.
- 34:48Listen, anytime you're playing Mealwool, you're putting the leather studs in the long ones that, that size.
- 34:53You know what I mean?
- 34:58When I listen to talk sport, when I hear Jamie o' Hara talk and criticize and I'm thinking, are you for real?
- 35:10Have you had a second chance to even talk about anyone?
- 35:13Just the rubbish that you've done just doesn't make sense, girl.
- 35:19Did.
- 35:20Did you play with o'?
- 35:21Hara?
- 35:22No, but when I.
- 35:24We had the agency and like, obviously we used to go out with the players, the character of him was just absolutely no good.
- 35:35Mate, I ain't gonna say much.
- 35:36I didn't make it as a pro, but for me, he was.
- 35:38He looks very ordinary and played very ordinary, you know, So I don't get some of those people on there.
- 35:45You have to respect their.
- 35:47Respect their intelligence.
- 35:48Even Simon Jordan, you know, he talks, he's got some knowledge to him.
- 35:51But when I hear those players.
- 35:53Okay, you know, anyway, it's not good.
- 35:55And you're absolutely correct.
- 35:57The.
- 35:58The Bentecki, who knows what he's.
- 36:01What he was saying, you know, in half time or training.
- 36:04But all I know is he wasn't getting the balls into the box.
- 36:07And when you're not getting balls in the box and you're like Ben Techie, that's what you feed off.
- 36:11Yeah.
- 36:12But I guarantee another reason why he won't mostly stay much there, because he was on about 80 grand a week.
- 36:20I love this way the chat's going.
- 36:22It's fantastic.
- 36:23You're at Palace.
- 36:28The first year you joined, was it the first year or the second year you joined?
- 36:32You had that cup run.
- 36:34I left in.
- 36:36I signed back in 83, 84 season, but it was like November.
- 36:42We were sort of like struggling in the old second division, which is now the championship, Right.
- 36:47And funny enough, my debut, my full debut was against Grimsby away, and I scored on my full debut.
- 36:56We beat him.
- 36:57Three, two, Nico.
- 37:01Yeah.
- 37:01Nikos got one.
- 37:03I got one.
- 37:03And Brian Sparrow, God rest his soul, got one that season.
- 37:10Nico left near the end to go to Luton.
- 37:15Oh, did he go Luton.
- 37:16Oh, because he'd come back by that time he was Arsenal and then came back, right?
- 37:20Yeah.
- 37:21He come back from Arsenal to Palace and then he went and then Luton to Chelsea.
- 37:27All right, yeah, because early Wally was there, old, old artist boots.
- 37:35Early Wally, proper football.
- 37:39Yeah.
- 37:39And then we had like people like Mickey Droy, George woods.
- 37:46But see the thing about we had like Gary Locke.
- 37:51So there was some older pros coming to near the end of their career.
- 37:55So you can imagine the likes of me coming back.
- 37:59But Jim knowing me.
- 38:00But Jim.
- 38:02Jim knew me as like a 13 year old, like big mouth.
- 38:08So I had to sort of like gain the respect because you know what Jim's like, like, what are you signing players like that for?
- 38:17You know what I mean?
- 38:18Especially coming from like non league sort of thing.
- 38:20But when I first signed back, as I said, we had these older pros and it's really difficult because they didn't like the fact that copper was buying places.
- 38:34We bought a guy called Steve Galloway from Sutton United.
- 38:41So Steve signed first, then Steve signed me, then we had Phil Barber, I think Phil was there before me and we had Gary's.
- 38:52Remember Gary Stebbins?
- 38:54Yeah, Steps here.
- 38:55Yes, yes.
- 38:56So Stubbs was like a part of.
- 38:59He was the youth though, wasn't he?
- 39:00Was stubs.
- 39:01He was in the youth side there, wasn't he?
- 39:03Yeah, no, he come through, yeah, but he come through to use.
- 39:06But he was like the next sort of like next one on the rank.
- 39:11Yeah, but he was just worn out, he was shot, you know what I mean?
- 39:14And yeah,.
- 39:18Yeah, he was, he was over it.
- 39:21Yeah, yeah, yeah, he was like physically and mentally he was gone, do you know what I mean?
- 39:25And like.
- 39:26But you could see the anger from up, from the ones he brought in, like we would like the energy.
- 39:33So I played from 83 to 87.
- 39:38Bobby Ghoul tried to sign me for Bristol City, right.
- 39:44Copple wouldn't let me go, not a problem.
- 39:48So I think they gave me 50 quid.
- 39:51I had to sign another contract for 50 quid.
- 39:53So that put me on 200 quid.
- 39:59Yeah.
- 40:01So then what happened was we went on a pre season and George Wood like come into the room.
- 40:12I'm not going to say too much about it, but it nearly went off, right.
- 40:19I used that as an excuse to say, up yours, I'm leaving, I'm off here, I'm off.
- 40:29So basically Graham Taylor came in for me when obviously Villa got relegated and he was the new manager and God rest his soul as well, the tapping up.
- 40:40I Mean, he was ringing me at my mum's house, like virtually every day.
- 40:44We need you, we need you, we need you.
- 40:47Do you know what I mean?
- 40:48So we went up there, we played him, they beat us 4:1.
- 40:53And that was in October time.
- 40:56Mark Walters scored three goals.
- 40:59But I always loved Mark Walters as a kid.
- 41:04I really loved the way he played in that.
- 41:06And cut, cut to the chase.
- 41:11Basically I left palace, but they, they sort of like put silly rumors.
- 41:17I said, okay, if that's the way it's going to be, cyber them or me.
- 41:22But at the time, he weren't letting them go.
- 41:26Do you know what I mean?
- 41:27Right, right, right, right.
- 41:29So I bullied my way out of there and played at Villa, got promotion, got any England under 21s?
- 41:40But I played with Gaza against Scotland and not at Nottingham Forest ground that summer.
- 41:45But don't forget I knew Venice as a kid.
- 41:49Yes, because, because Venice used to drop me off at Clapham Common in the summer when his daughters used to come, right?
- 41:56He used to drop me off at Clapham Common right at the end of the, the training.
- 42:00So, yeah, so I played that game and we got promoted.
- 42:04Ted Buxton rang me in the summer and said, listen, Andy, Tottenham want.
- 42:08Yeah, I went, oh, okay.
- 42:11So I went into Graham Taylor.
- 42:13He said, he's not selling me.
- 42:16And they bought Paul Stewart, right, I remember you.
- 42:21Yeah, they bought Paul Stewart, so.
- 42:23Because obviously they wouldn't sell me.
- 42:25And then I started the season, but I got up.
- 42:28The first game in the, in the, the Premiership was against Arsenal.
- 42:33We beat him free 2.
- 42:35I had a real good game.
- 42:37I scored a free kick from about 35 yards and then I'm busy, do you know what I mean?
- 42:44Like driving that and buzzing.
- 42:46Then two weeks later, this is how mad football is.
- 42:48I got sent off against Sheffield Wednesday.
- 42:51Gary Medicine, like, he mugged me off and like, yeah, I got sent off and then Kevin Gage played in because Kevin Gage was playing right back.
- 43:04So then Kevin, when I was out for like, I think it was two games Kevin played and they won the two games.
- 43:09But Kevin done really, really well.
- 43:12I mean, I got old me hands up even I told him this because he does the compare when we do the villa and I'm using Kevin.
- 43:19It was around Christmas time I got in the team, but Graham was playing me at right wing right.
- 43:27We played Queen's Park Rangers, but Trevor Francis was the player manager, so we played him.
- 43:33And I'm playing out there on the wing and they were struggling in the old championship.
- 43:40Anyway, I had a good Game.
- 43:42And before we were walking off he said, would you like to come back to London?
- 43:48So basically he approached me on the pitch, so because I was like in and out the team, I said it, yeah, I want to go back home.
- 43:57And then he sold me to Queen's Park Rangers, I think for 550 back in the day.
- 44:05So I don't know what you would have back then because they bought me for 150, which palace was screaming about is too cheap, you know what I mean?
- 44:17But it is what it is, do you know what I mean?
- 44:21So, yeah, so I got back, went to Queen's Park Rangers.
- 44:26I was there for three months.
- 44:28But palace were in the old first.
- 44:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, Second, Second.
- 44:34First.
- 44:35Yeah, yeah.
- 44:36So they were pushing for promotion but I was still in, like in touch with Brighty.
- 44:43Righty.
- 44:44Even like when I would come down Saturday nights, go with the Browns and you know what I mean, like.
- 44:48But yeah, so we always in touch, talking about Browns.
- 44:53I'm still in touch with Jake.
- 44:54We still speak all the time.
- 44:55Yeah, send my regards to him.
- 44:57I loved him.
- 44:57He's a great guy.
- 44:58No, he's lovely.
- 44:59He's lovely, yeah.
- 45:00Gone.
- 45:00The game against Blackburn, when they got promoted at Sellers, I was outside.
- 45:07I didn't actually watch the game, I was outside the ground in my car.
- 45:13But that night they were having the Player of the Year thing anyway, so I went to the Player of the Year dance that night and then Copper went to me, do you want to come back?
- 45:25I went, yeah, definitely.
- 45:28So Monday comes, I ring Trevor Francis up and says, trev, listen, I want to go back home.
- 45:35So that was the year we got to the Cup Final.
- 45:39Well, that was part one.
- 45:42What a show.
