Luna: Oh, I love that. I've been wanting to talk about the weather in Amharic. It's such good small talk. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with a nice day. Sunny. In Amharic, 'It's sunny' is ፀሐይ ነው. Luna: ፀሐይ ነው. Hmm, that's a bit of a mouthful. Lucas: Take it slow. ፀሐይ... ነው. Luna: ፀሐይ ነው. Lucas: Yes! You've got it. That means 'It's sunny.' Now, what about when it's not so nice? Rainy. ዝናብ ነው. Luna: ዝናብ ነው. Oh, that one feels easier. Lucas: Right? ዝናብ ነው. So let's practice a little exchange. I'll ask: ፀሐይ ነው? ዝናብ ነው? You answer. Luna: Okay, uhh... Let me think. If it's sunny, I say ፀሐይ ነው. If rainy, ዝናብ ነው. Lucas: Perfect. So if I say: ፀሐይ ነው? ዝናብ ነው? And it's rainy, what do you say? Luna: አዎ, ዝናብ ነው. Lucas: Excellent! አዎ means yes. So 'yes, it's rainy.' Let's put it all together. ዛሬ means today. So 'Today it's sunny' is ዛሬ ፀሐይ ነው. Luna: ዛሬ ፀሐይ ነው. That's nice. What about 'today it's rainy'? Lucas: ዛሬ ዝናብ ነው. Try it. Luna: ዛሬ ዝናብ ነው. Lucas: Yeah. So now imagine you're looking out the window. It's sunny. You say... Luna: ፀሐይ ነው. Lucas: And if someone asks you ፀሐይ ነው? ዝናብ ነው? And it's sunny, you say... Luna: አዎ, ፀሐይ ነው. Lucas: You've got it. Let's do a quick role-play. I'll be a friend. I say: ዛሬ ፀሐይ ነው? ዝናብ ነው? Luna: Umm, it's sunny. So ዛሬ ፀሐይ ነው. Lucas: Great. Now switch: I say ዛሬ ዝናብ ነው? ፀሐይ ነው? Luna: If it's rainy, I'd say ዛሬ ዝናብ ነው. Lucas: There you go. Feel pretty good about those? Luna: Yeah, I do. And I can see using these — like, if I'm on a video call with a friend in Addis, I could ask about the weather. Lucas: Totally.
