- 1:05Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other Alcoholics
- 1:09are chief sobriety. My name's Elizabeth.
- 1:14I'm a sober alcoholic. Sober today for the grace of
- 1:18God. Yeah, I just my story growing up
- 1:26as a child, always, I never felt like I fitted in.
- 1:30Found it hard to make friends. And yeah, well, my father died
- 1:37when I was 10. So I felt like where's this, you
- 1:40know, where's this God And went to secondary school and yeah, I
- 1:45just didn't feel good. People would.
- 1:48I went to a girls school and they said I'll be old man.
- 1:51I'd say at least you've got one. Yeah.
- 1:54So I just really was an angry person and I love your sport.
- 1:57That was the way I I've I've got peace was playing basketball and
- 2:02sports. So bunch in in the break times.
- 2:05I go to the gym just to be on my own shoot goals and they barred
- 2:11me from me gym hoping I'd make friends, but it didn't work.
- 2:15But anyway, you know, I'd be handing out cigarettes to girls
- 2:18wanting to get friends, but they take the cigarettes.
- 2:20And. Yeah.
- 2:21But anyway, I was trying hard, but I just didn't know how to
- 2:23fit in. And.
- 2:25But once I picked up that drink, that was it.
- 2:28I thought that I I had, they calmed me down.
- 2:32I didn't like the taste, but actually I felt like I fitted
- 2:35in. I initially only drank weekends
- 2:41because in those days, yeah, children should be sending.
- 2:48I heard I'm right. You're wrong.
- 2:49And if I cried, I'd get a wax. So I learned how to control my
- 2:53emotions. And yeah, so I mean, I mixed
- 3:00with older people when I I got a part time job working at the
- 3:05shopping centre after school, secondary school.
- 3:08And I was underage with the first time I got drunk.
- 3:13We went on AI work do up on top of a mountain and I went with
- 3:20people and they're getting me drinks and I drank drops on the
- 3:24rocks and I was up dancing on the way down.
- 3:27You gotta go round and around the mountain and of course first
- 3:30time ever I did and just stop and I was sick as anything.
- 3:33I was so embarrassed and I'm hiding in the shop and I saw the
- 3:37people and they said don't worry, that happens to us all,
- 3:40you know. Anyway, so I didn't drink props
- 3:43on the rocks. So I thought that was me
- 3:44problem. But anyway, that was my first
- 3:46real drunk, but I was allergic to alcohol, you know, but I
- 3:50persevered, you know, I was like, I didn't drink at home.
- 3:56So it's I, I was a pub drinker and I drink, I drink in the bar
- 4:01because in the lands of women too slow and I'm paid poor.
- 4:03And I was, you know, people in the pub, I'll talk to them and
- 4:07they'd say drink milk before when you go to bed or drink
- 4:11water or drink water, they line your stomach with milk.
- 4:14And yeah, and but in the end, for 15 years is when I it
- 4:22escalating. And, you know, I drank most days
- 4:26and, you know, people would tell me what I did and if they were
- 4:33laughing, I'd laugh with him. A lot of the times I didn't
- 4:35remember what I did or said. And you know, you know, I woke
- 4:40up in places and I looked around and thought, where am I?
- 4:42I didn't know, I mean the places where I ended up, but all as I
- 4:46know is, you know, I had a partner at home and all of a
- 4:49sudden I wake up and I didn't know where I was.
- 4:53But anyway, that was how it was and I I drank and drove and I'd,
- 5:04that was just how it was for me. I drank, I drank beer put on the
- 5:07way, got out the calorie counter.
- 5:09Do you know the least soda order had mule?
- 5:12So I drink that. They got expicy and then I ended
- 5:15up on Pascal wine. I liked Riesling and they'll be
- 5:19driving on the car and I'd have a cask one beside me and said
- 5:22the lights, I'd have a look and, you know, just flip the lid and
- 5:25have a drink and keep driving. You know, I had a hospital
- 5:28sticker on the car and the police would pull me over a lot
- 5:31of times and I'd get out first. I was told what to do and I
- 5:34said, look, I'm I've got to get to work and now here's me.
- 5:36Here's me cigar. And yeah, they never
- 5:39breathalysed me just before I got so.
- 5:43But anyway, you know, I, I had my car do 363 spins a couple of
- 5:48times. I got out and I was like, hey,
- 5:50and yeah. And I was just up in the GAR and
- 5:53I'm gonna call again. You know, I woke up in blackout.
- 5:56I'm at the police station trying to tell them these boys were
- 5:58punching me up and whatever I said we can't lock you up, get
- 6:02out of here. So I got in my car, I was that
- 6:04drunk. And off I went and back to the
- 6:05pub burning away. You know, I was looked after but
- 6:09I was mad and you know, unfortunately I never ever
- 6:11killed anyone or hurt anyone, just me car.
- 6:15But anyway, yeah, I was just mad.
- 6:18And you know, I'd be ringing me mum and I'd be writing down
- 6:24things to remind myself what to say because I knew I couldn't
- 6:26remember the next day type thing.
- 6:28Then I'd try and read me notes to see what I said.
- 6:30Then I couldn't read what I said anyway, you know OK.
- 6:34But anyway, once we partner for Gee, it's quiet because normally
- 6:37when I was talking, mum, I'm talking loud anyway, come in and
- 6:39I'm sound asleep and it threw water over me to wake me up and
- 6:43I and I said yes. And mum was still waiting for
- 6:45me, you know, I said, oh look, I do.
- 6:47I was doing shift work and I said, oh, you know, I've been
- 6:50working hard. I'm tired, you know.
- 6:51But anyway, mum was always there for me, you know.
- 6:54But anyway, I had, you know, a lot of car accidents had
- 6:59insurance company that wanted to give me an RE rating to get rid
- 7:01of me, you know, and and yeah, so but you know, I never
- 7:07married, didn't have kids. I took out a a cash and life
- 7:10insurance policy to keep drinking.
- 7:11I didn't think drinking was my problem.
- 7:14Then I took a cash and life insurance policy took out a loan
- 7:17to keep drinking. Just a couple of 1000 thinking
- 7:19to get better. Two years before I got sober I I
- 7:24was unwell and I was put into a public place rehab 2 weeks and
- 7:31yeah I stopped drinking. I was told then I continued to
- 7:34drink 30 I've been alcoholic came out went to one meeting or
- 7:38after I'm king listen and the last two years I hated myself.
- 7:42I didn't want to go on but I didn't know what I wanted to
- 7:45leave, but I didn't want to leave.
- 7:46And eventually, you know, I was get seeing parents that try to
- 7:52stop drinking and I read in the in their paper bad alcoholism
- 7:57Herald Sun and and I thought maybe an alcoholic and I rang
- 8:00his cancer and said maybe you need to be in hospital.
- 8:03I had an appointment with my mum's doctor.
- 8:05I drank and drove and probably for about 7, I don't remember
- 8:11this, but my mum said that I came in and said I can't go on.
- 8:16She kept her phone number to Paul House, which just opened up
- 8:19in Melbourne. It was public detox, no
- 8:21medication. That was it week or 10 days, a
- 8:25new way out anyway. And those days she can get a bed
- 8:28and they drove me. My dad had fosters, my stepdad
- 8:32block on dad 2 fosters my way in, woke up, didn't know where I
- 8:37was. And most days it was just walk
- 8:40down Fitzroy St. get a vitamin B injection in your bottom.
- 8:43And that was it. And then went to a meeting on
- 8:47the Wednesday night to Vincent's Hospital and I was asked to
- 8:50share and I said I'm an alcoholic and sat down, nearly
- 8:52choked and left there. And I had my last drink on
- 8:55March, the AP 89 since then day at the time, you know, I had to,
- 9:01you know, in those days I said, don't worry about the meetings.
- 9:03Took me 5 years to get into the steps.
- 9:05The big book. I I recommend as soon as you can
- 9:09quickly get into it, the quickie well, but I've only shared my
- 9:12story and that's how it was. I went mad several times, but I
- 9:15I didn't pick up a drink. But I, you know, my days it was
- 9:23get a public phone to call for help.
- 9:24Nowadays you've got mobile phones and all this technology.
- 9:27So you just got to find somebody to connect with, call them
- 9:30daily, get a sponsor, do the steps.
- 9:33And for me, it's all about helping others.
- 9:35I'm here today because of the older members that helped me
- 9:38that some of the died sober. I've been to people's deaths
- 9:42that, you know, they just didn't get.
- 9:43It was so simple. You can you can forget about it.
- 9:46What we've got to do is just don't pick up and drink all
- 9:48driving for me and that's all you know you can do anything
- 9:51else. Response will say you rob a bag.
- 9:53Just joking. You got to suffer the consul
- 9:55rances, but it's all we ask. Do not pick up a drink you know,
- 9:59just for today. Weeks will turn you to months,
- 10:01months will turn you to years, a day at a time.
- 10:04I've had a lot of times where I wanted to pick up a drink, you
- 10:06know, but you just don't pick up the first drink.
- 10:09He used to save a milkshake, 2 lollies, whatever.
- 10:11You know, you won't feel like a drink.
- 10:13You know, Jim, Molly, whatever. I mean, I was a workaholic.
- 10:17You know, it's a good idea, but that's what I did.
- 10:19It's, you know, I've been ungrateful that I haven't been
- 10:21able to pick up a drink at all. A day at a time.
- 10:24You know, I've rung up here in the middle of the night, women
- 10:26ring me. That's how it works.
- 10:28We understand each other. We just go to meetings, get a
- 10:32sponsor, do the steps. I didn't do 30 meetings and 30
- 10:35days. Doesn't matter.
- 10:37Whatever you can do, you know, the more the better maybe.
- 10:40But for me, you know, when I was sick, I did 60 meetings in
- 10:44whatever days. It doesn't matter as long as you
- 10:46get to meetings, keep in contact.
- 10:49And I and I help others. And today at a time, I'll always
- 10:52continue to help others. And doesn't matter where you are
- 10:55in the world, AO is always there.
- 11:00And you know, you know, I arrived at New Zealand, just got
- 11:05to a public phone and rang. Where's the meeting?
- 11:08This is where you go. Went there and hired a car for
- 11:11two weeks and drove around the South of New Zealand, got to
- 11:14meetings and you know, you know, I got lost heading to somewhere
- 11:19and the car stopped by. It was the IA people because
- 11:21I've been to meetings and they just said yeah, gave me a hug,
- 11:24said thank you God. And off I drove.
- 11:26And, you know, so, you know, I went to the world convention,
- 11:30you know, 70,000 sober Alcoholics, you know, but every
- 11:34five years, you know, and I hired a car in America, they're
- 11:37two weeks on me own, wrong side of the road.
- 11:40Elvis Presley's mansion, you know, he had all the money and
- 11:43he wasn't happy. I walked in, I cried and I said
- 11:47I'm grateful that I didn't pick up, you know, And yeah, but for
- 11:52the gross of all. But anyway, alls I know is, you
- 11:56know, now you got WhatsApp, you got all this technology, you
- 11:59know, and you can have these Zoom meetings, you know.
- 12:03So, yeah, there's always ways he can get to meetings.
- 12:09You don't. I like face to face.
- 12:11But you got your Zoom meetings and, you know, you got WhatsApp.
- 12:15I mean, I was in China last month for 20 nights and, you
- 12:19know, I went to a English speaking meeting and, you know,
- 12:24Zoom meeting in China, you know, And, you know, all I know is,
- 12:30yeah, you know, it's a great fellowship.
- 12:33And I had to learn how to live and ask questions and get help.
- 12:38And. And for me, I think I was, I was
- 12:41grateful that I just did what I was told to do, you know, stick
- 12:45with strength. I used to say the older members,
- 12:47if they hang around, the newcomers, if they pick up a
- 12:49drink, others pick up a drink. Yeah, that's what I did.
- 12:52Yeah. I've got older members that I,
- 12:56I, I hung around with, you know, and, you know, I couldn't even
- 13:00make a decision. And my sponsor would gave me
- 13:02this little whizzer button and yes or no because, you know, I
- 13:07didn't have to make a decision. And I asked for help and she
- 13:11gave me 3 choices and let me try and decide what I wanted to do,
- 13:14you know, but I had to, oh you know, I just had to ask
- 13:18questions, no questions said, you know what I mean?
- 13:21Because we understand each other and it's, you know, how the
- 13:26fellowship works and you know, and presently, you know,
- 13:33wherever I travel, I is with me. And I'm very grateful for the
- 13:38fellowship and giving back to others.
- 13:44You know, my mum kept the phone number to Ball House and I was
- 13:47able to, well, she passed away at 93.
- 13:53And but in that last few years she, she was new.
- 13:55I was there when she was in hospital, said mum gotta get to
- 13:58a meeting, She said an AA meeting, you know, and I said
- 14:01I'll be back, you know, and she knew what I was and, you know,
- 14:05and I just said that, you know, I'll always keep on going to AI,
- 14:10carry the message and, you know, and I was able to get a
- 14:16companion card, take my mum to the zoo, to the musical, to
- 14:22Elvis Presley's thing in the country.
- 14:25I took her in the car, took her to the footy, Ella Walker, you
- 14:28know, and she loved the footy, you know.
- 14:30So I made sure that mum got a life because she gave me a life
- 14:33and I made sure in the end, you know, she went peacefully.
- 14:37And now I'm at the stage of my life where I've retired and, you
- 14:40know, and I couldn't get a job working drug and alcohol
- 14:44anywhere. I'm sober.
- 14:45And I'm going around carrying the message to the places in
- 14:49Riley where I couldn't get a, a job sober because, you know, I
- 14:55didn't pass the interview because I didn't sell myself.
- 14:59Anyway, all I know is now, like I always carry the message when
- 15:03I'm ever I'm asked to speak and I'm on a cruise and and yeah,
- 15:07the opportunity arose and I thought, yeah, why not?
- 15:10You never know, the time's right.
- 15:12Carry the message to somewhere, somebody else.
- 15:14And you know, I have a little practice golf on the roof, you
- 15:17know, just a little par three thing a four shots and you're
- 15:20in. And this lady's strong.
- 15:21And I, you know, I had a chat with her and she wanted a drink.
- 15:26I said, yeah, dehydrator there. And, you know, we celebrate 80
- 15:30years of a A and she said you in the 80s club.
- 15:32I didn't tweak. So she's, you know, she'd heard
- 15:34one of our members talking. And here and here I am in the
- 15:3780s club. So you never know whenever
- 15:40someone's around. Hell, I remember that, you know,
- 15:42here he's 400 sober people, you know, a day at a time on a, on
- 15:46a, on AP and O cruise ship, you know, And yeah, so it's always,
- 15:51there's always. I stick with the strength, stick
- 15:54with the fellowship. And, you know, anytime I want to
- 15:57go overseas, I always Google a a conventions and beans.
- 16:01And, you know, we were fucking playing around when things are
- 16:03happening just to be, you know, we save the people.
- 16:07And, you know, so it's a lot of yes, I was just a great
- 16:12fellowship and yeah, and I'm ever so grateful and day at a
- 16:17time. I'll just keep coming back and
- 16:19thank you. How did you find the God stuff?
- 16:22Oh great, glad you asked me that.
- 16:24I'm grateful that nearly days there was a priest where I work
- 16:28and somebody said be going to this meeting and Father Pat was
- 16:31there, but what's he doing there?
- 16:33You know, he was an alcoholic and I said to him, you know, how
- 16:38do you find this God? And I'm running around trying to
- 16:40find this God. I've been to this church and the
- 16:42church and he said don't worry and chase God.
- 16:44He said, you know, the church couldn't get me sober.
- 16:47He said the church is for me because he's a priest, but he
- 16:50said you need AI went to a meeting 2 weeks later, someone
- 16:53didn't know me. He said someone went to church,
- 16:55stop drinking, they died. All I know is I was told and I
- 16:58respect what he said to me because yeah, the church
- 17:02couldn't get him service. So for me it was a matter of I
- 17:07just knew that through the fellowship.
- 17:10You know, things happen, God coincidence, all things like you
- 17:14know, when I felt like a drink, people would say that call me a
- 17:17pray. This time I'm in the city in
- 17:19Melbourne and I was going on a river cruise.
- 17:21Actually they a as a function and and my partner.
- 17:25Oh, you know, I was in I was in a you know, don't get tired,
- 17:28hungry, thirsty. I thought I got a pray.
- 17:29I saw this time McDonald's went to the toilet, got down on my
- 17:32knees. I said I don't want to pick up a
- 17:33drink today. I walked out and walked into a
- 17:35member. I don't know if things happen.
- 17:37All's I know is that God, coincidences or, or whatever
- 17:43things happen. And so for me, all as I know is
- 17:48that, yeah, I'm spiritual and, you know, things happen for a
- 17:54reason, good and bad, you know, and you get the bad things
- 17:57happen. It's for a lesson to Grove and
- 18:00then things, you know, that's how things work.
- 18:02And yeah. So I just know that.
- 18:06Yeah, yeah. I'm just so grateful that I've
- 18:10got my higher power and they just hang around, stick around,
- 18:14keep with the strength and it's a lovely fellow fellowship the
- 18:17day it is home. Thank you.
- 18:20A A has more than two million recovering Alcoholics throughout
