• 2:24
Speaker 6: director of Americans for Prosperity, Good morning, Welcome to the
• 2:27
  Speaker 6: show man.
• 2:28
Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave, Thanks for having me.
• 2:29
Speaker 4: What did you do with Crescent?
• 2:31
  Speaker 8: Uh?
• 2:31
Speaker 7: Yeah, give him the day off? He gets one.
• 2:33
Speaker 4: Everyone say Cressa and I go back.
• 2:35
Speaker 6: He's a big Browns fan, you know, and so not
• 2:37
Speaker 6: natural rivals to my cowboys. But still, you know, a
• 2:42
Speaker 6: lot of heartbreak goes with both those teams.
• 2:44
Speaker 7: I think, well, we'll try not to hold it against
• 2:46
Speaker 7: either of you, either one of us.
• 2:48
Speaker 6: So before we get into the serious stuff here, I
• 2:53
Speaker 6: know you folks are incredibly busy and you're getting ready
• 2:55
Speaker 6: for the election coming up in November. But any downtime
• 2:58
Speaker 6: at all for mister Huffin, you got to do anything
• 3:01
  Speaker 6: fun this summer.
• 3:02
Speaker 7: You know, Dave. Every day's vacation when you love your job.
• 3:04
  Speaker 4: Brother perfectly said.
• 3:08
Speaker 7: But you know, you know, we like to get around,
• 3:09
Speaker 7: get around the state a little bit, get around town.
• 3:12
Speaker 7: Kind of a low key summer for us, doing some
• 3:15
Speaker 7: renovations around the house. Actually, So that's uh, you know
• 3:17
Speaker 7: how home ownership goes.
• 3:18
Speaker 4: Yes, I do, Yes, I do.
• 3:20
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 3:20
Speaker 6: My wife's very handy with things like that.
• 3:22
Speaker 4: That's all I have to say about that.
• 3:23
Speaker 6: So you're still out knocking on doors for your group.
• 3:26
Speaker 7: We are, indeed, I tell you what, Dave, it's really
• 3:28
Speaker 7: one of the most exciting times. And I've been giving
• 3:31
Speaker 7: politics and policy for over a decade at this point,
• 3:34
Speaker 7: and this is the most exciting time I think that
• 3:36
Speaker 7: we've we've had. You know, historically speaking, West Virginia has
• 3:41
Speaker 7: not had a first term day one Republican governor with
• 3:45
Speaker 7: a super majority of Republicans in the legislature since before Prohibition. Okay,
• 3:50
Speaker 7: so let that let that sink. Well, that's a little
• 3:52
Speaker 7: bit opportunity that we have with what is likely going
• 3:55
Speaker 7: to be probably the election of Patrick Morrissey as as
• 3:58
Speaker 7: the state's next governor, is an opportunity to transform our
• 4:03
Speaker 7: state from a policy perspective. You know, Patrick Morrisey often
• 4:06
Speaker 7: talks about wanted to have a backyard brawl with the
• 4:09
Speaker 7: states that we touch in terms of the laws we
• 4:13
Speaker 7: have on the books, how much they advance freedom and
• 4:15
Speaker 7: opportunity for for every West Virginia, and to compete for
• 4:19
Speaker 7: those residents, to get people to want to be a
• 4:21
Speaker 7: part of what we're doing here in West Virginia. And
• 4:23
Speaker 7: I think you know what we're trying to do in
• 4:25
Speaker 7: Americans for Prosperity with our Pathway to Prosperity Agenda twenty
• 4:29
Speaker 7: twenty five is to provide a sort of common sense
• 4:33
Speaker 7: policy roadmap for lawmakers that want to transform the state,
• 4:37
Speaker 7: that want to really capture that historic opportunity.
• 4:40
Speaker 6: Talk about some of the things that are on that agenda.
• 4:42
Speaker 6: I know when the licetime christl was here we got
• 4:43
Speaker 6: into a little bit. But when you're when you're talking
• 4:47
Speaker 6: to legislators, whether there are people that are serving now
• 4:50
Speaker 6: or whether it's you know there's there's new people coming in,
• 4:53
Speaker 6: what are you telling them?
• 4:54
Speaker 7: Well, first and foremost, I think we can't rest on
• 4:57
Speaker 7: our laurels, right, I mean, wallmakers have done a lot
• 5:00
Speaker 7: in terms of whether it's the historic largest tax cut
• 5:03
Speaker 7: in state history, whether it's being the first state to
• 5:07
Speaker 7: have a gold standard for educational freedom in the country
• 5:10
Speaker 7: that now thirteen other states have adopted. There's been some
• 5:14
Speaker 7: quality steps forward in terms of advancing freedom and opportunity
• 5:19
Speaker 7: for people. But we've got to double down with the
• 5:22
Speaker 7: landscape that we have right now. We've got to double down,
• 5:25
Speaker 7: and so what we're asking lawmakers to do is to
• 5:27
Speaker 7: be bold in a couple of key areas. One, when
• 5:31
Speaker 7: it comes to taxes and spending, we've got to keep
• 5:33
Speaker 7: lowering rates. We have to make government live within its means.
• 5:35
Speaker 7: When it comes to healthcare, we've got to repeal certificate
• 5:38
Speaker 7: of need laws so that we can have more affordable,
• 5:40
Speaker 7: reliable health care. The regulatory structure that we have in
• 5:44
Speaker 7: the state has really got to have a hard look
• 5:46
Speaker 7: taken at it, because quite frankly, we're not being competitive
• 5:50
Speaker 7: with a lot of our state.
• 5:51
Speaker 6: Isn't it better though now than what it used to be?
• 5:53
Speaker 6: In your opinion, it certainly is? But hey, good, good
• 5:56
Speaker 6: better best never let it rest, right, I mean, that's
• 5:58
Speaker 6: where we're at. So I think we're encouraging lawmakers to
• 6:02
Speaker 6: aim for much much better. Talking again with Jason Huffman,
• 6:05
Speaker 6: the executive director of Americans for Prosperity. This morning, The
• 6:08
Speaker 6: Dave Island Show on five eighty Live broad toom parted
• 6:11
Speaker 6: by Husband's Pizza. This month at your favorite Hustans, get
• 6:13
Speaker 6: a large eighteen inch Pepperoni pizza and an eight inch
• 6:16
Speaker 6: chocolate chip cookie for only twenty three ninety nine. You
• 6:19
Speaker 6: mentioned the upcoming election, and it's conventional wisdom and anything
• 6:24
Speaker 6: can happen. That's why you have elections, like in sports,
• 6:26
Speaker 6: that's why you play the game. But most people think
• 6:29
Speaker 6: that Patrick Morrissey is going to be elected governor of
• 6:33
Speaker 6: West Virginia. And I know Steve Williams. Steve Williams has
• 6:37
Speaker 6: been on the show numerous times. I think Steve's a
• 6:39
  Speaker 6: good guy.
• 6:40
Speaker 4: I really really do.
• 6:41
Speaker 6: But most people think, especially with the bright red that
• 6:45
Speaker 6: is now West Virginia, then whomever the Republican is is
• 6:48
Speaker 6: going to be governor. But you guys kind of came
• 6:50
Speaker 6: out early for Patrick Morrissey.
• 6:52
Speaker 7: Yeah, we certainly did. I mean it was a crowded
• 6:54
Speaker 7: primary field. There were several people on that ballot that again,
• 6:59
Speaker 7: everybody the race is a good guy, right, But Patrick
• 7:02
Speaker 7: Morrissey just has such a clear vision for wanting to
• 7:05
Speaker 7: transform the state for the better. And I think that he,
• 7:09
Speaker 7: you know, through his work as Attorney General, has demonstrated
• 7:13
Speaker 7: this kind of fervor for change and making sure that
• 7:18
Speaker 7: West Virginians are better off as a result of the
• 7:21
Speaker 7: work that he does every single day. And so we
• 7:23
Speaker 7: got into that race early and endorsed him for governor.
• 7:27
Speaker 7: And like you said, the political landscape in the state
• 7:30
Speaker 7: read and getting redder, I think probably would be an
• 7:32
Speaker 7: understatement to some extent. You're going to have over ninety
• 7:36
Speaker 7: Republicans out of one hundred in the House of Delegates.
• 7:39
Speaker 7: In the state Senate, I think maybe we'll have maybe
• 7:42
Speaker 7: we'll have two Democrats. So I think as far as
• 7:47
Speaker 7: Republican politics in the state goes, certainly a sea change
• 7:49
Speaker 7: from what we saw a little over ten years ago
• 7:52
Speaker 7: when when the state turned red. However, I would say that,
• 7:56
Speaker 7: you know, not all Republicans are created equally in terms
• 7:59
Speaker 7: of their policy positions. And like I said, again, you
• 8:03
Speaker 7: want lawmakers. I think voters have demonstrated that they want
• 8:06
Speaker 7: lawmakers that don't tinker around the margins, they want bold,
• 8:09
Speaker 7: transformational changes. Those are the folks that keep getting elected.
• 8:12
Speaker 7: And I hope lawmakers pay attention to that now.
• 8:14
  Speaker 6: You're technically a nonpartisan organization, I mean, a non you
• 8:18
Speaker 6: don't necessarily you don't have a Republican you know, agenda,
• 8:23
Speaker 6: so to speak. But it just happens that a lot
• 8:25
Speaker 6: of your polities policies do fall in line with the
• 8:28
Speaker 6: basic core principles of the Republican Party.
• 8:30
  Speaker 7: Yeah, I think I think that's right. Well, it's the
• 8:32
Speaker 7: old Frederick Douglas quote where he said, essentially, or work
• 8:35
Speaker 7: with anybody to accomplish.
• 8:36
Speaker 6: Good And so I think it's interesting. And you're somebody
• 8:40
Speaker 6: that has followed this, you know, for a long long time,
• 8:44
Speaker 6: and that is this shift that we saw in West
• 8:47
Speaker 6: Virginia starting. It started before Trump. I mean it really did.
• 8:50
Speaker 6: It started in you know, twenty twenty twenty fourteen is
• 8:56
Speaker 6: what it started. But it's actually just starting to see
• 8:58
Speaker 6: seeds of that even before that. And as you said,
• 9:00
Speaker 6: it just keeps getting redder and redder and redder. And
• 9:04
Speaker 6: you never want to say never. But I don't know
• 9:06
Speaker 6: what it's going to change. You know, I'm an old guy,
• 9:08
Speaker 6: older than you. I don't know if it's going to
• 9:10
Speaker 6: change during my lifetime.
• 9:11
Speaker 7: Well, I mean it certainly got a lot of runway.
• 9:13
Speaker 7: I think probably twenty or so years. But you're right
• 9:15
Speaker 7: I did start back. I think probably during the first
• 9:19
Speaker 7: Bush election for president, and then obviously I think the
• 9:23
Speaker 7: Obama era of politics, in which the Democratic Party became
• 9:29
Speaker 7: much more radical and much more i would say, far
• 9:33
Speaker 7: left in terms of their policy leanings, particularly on the
• 9:36
Speaker 7: cultural side. I've talked to a lot of people with
• 9:39
Speaker 7: the Doorstep that are former Democrats Dave that have switched
• 9:42
Speaker 7: to either Republican or Independent that are just saying, listen,
• 9:44
Speaker 7: the party left me. I don't know what happened. This
• 9:47
Speaker 7: is not the party of JFK anymore. It's a part
• 9:49
Speaker 7: of a much more radical and progressive left, and people
• 9:53
Speaker 7: don't like that here, so they obviously have switched. Teams.
• 9:56
Speaker 6: Got a couple of texts you were ready to take on.
• 9:58
Speaker 6: Some text team sure Tex says, what is in your
• 10:01
Speaker 6: experience in healthcare? What has been your experience Jason that
• 10:04
Speaker 6: led you to want certificate of need gone? And how
• 10:06
Speaker 6: do current small independent access hospitals feel about that? Wouldn't
• 10:11
Speaker 6: they be in jeopardy of if a big health system
• 10:13
Speaker 6: is set up were to set up shop next to them.
• 10:16
Speaker 7: Well, first of all, I think we could assuage some
• 10:18
Speaker 7: fears regarding repeal of certificate inded and just so, folks,
• 10:21
Speaker 7: No Certificate and need allows unelected bureaucrats to decide whether
• 10:24
Speaker 7: you get a new hospital service, or healthcare service, or
• 10:27
Speaker 7: expanded healthcare service in your community. It's something that was
• 10:32
Speaker 7: set up in the nineteen seventies. Essentially the federal government
• 10:35
Speaker 7: mandated that all states put it in place. Many states
• 10:39
Speaker 7: have repealed it, we have not yet. And there's a
• 10:41
Speaker 7: reason that the Department of Justice under both Republican and
• 10:44
Speaker 7: Democrat administrations has said that states should repeal their certificate
• 10:49
Speaker 7: of need laws because it's anti competition. It allows existing
• 10:54
Speaker 7: healthcare providers to veto essentially competition coming into the area.
• 10:59
Speaker 7: And we know and while healthcare is not necessarily a
• 11:02
Speaker 7: full on free market because of federal involvement in it,
• 11:07
Speaker 7: I would say that to some extent competition, as we know,
• 11:10
Speaker 7: we'll drive down prices, increase quality, generally make things better.
• 11:15
Speaker 7: And I think that our healthcare practitioners and our communities
• 11:17
Speaker 7: know when their community needs something, So let's trust them
• 11:21
Speaker 7: and allow them to do their work.
• 11:22
Speaker 4: A couple more techs before we let you go.
• 11:24
Speaker 6: AFP and Americans for Prosperity name the agencies and number
• 11:27
Speaker 6: of government workers you want fired?
• 11:29
Speaker 4: Do you want somebody fired?
• 11:30
  Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think that's a pretty blunt question, but
• 11:34
Speaker 7: I mean, obviously, if there are pieces of the bureaucracy
• 11:38
Speaker 7: that are not functioning as they probably should, then yeah,
• 11:43
Speaker 7: maybe maybe there will be some folks that are phased
• 11:45
Speaker 7: out of their employment. That's just the fact of the matter.
• 11:49
Speaker 7: But I will say that we haven't really had an
• 11:51
Speaker 7: opportunity to kick the tires on governance in this state,
• 11:55
Speaker 7: to look at it from a practicality level and say,
• 11:57
Speaker 7: are we following best practices in terms of governments? Why
• 12:00
Speaker 7: are why are we operating in some form and fashion
• 12:04
Speaker 7: that we do now currently? So hey, we get to
• 12:07
  Speaker 7: be introspective for a while, and I think that's a
• 12:09
Speaker 7: good thing for taxpayers.
• 12:10
Speaker 6: You guys don't really get into national politics that often.
• 12:13
Speaker 6: I mean, you obviously you study it and you look
• 12:16
Speaker 6: at it, but you don't You're more concerned with with
• 12:17
Speaker 6: West Virginia, with with Senate rates and governors things that nature, right.
• 12:21
Speaker 7: I mean, I think obviously we we do a lot
• 12:23
Speaker 7: of work at the federal level in.
• 12:25
  Speaker 4: Terms of policy.
• 12:26
Speaker 6: So the reason I ask is because somebody asked about
• 12:28
Speaker 6: an endorsement of Trump that was a text or is
• 12:31
Speaker 6: that something that you want to get into, because the
• 12:33
Speaker 6: actual text says uh.
• 12:34
  Speaker 5: Do you.
• 12:36
Speaker 6: Still pretend that they don't that they don't that they
• 12:39
Speaker 6: don't want you to vote for a sex abuser for president?
• 12:42
Speaker 7: Well, actually, I would say that Americans for Prosperity Action
• 12:44
Speaker 7: endorsed Nicky Haley in the primary for president.
• 12:48
  Speaker 9: Uh.
• 12:48
Speaker 7: And obviously you know, uh, Donald J. Trump is the
• 12:51
Speaker 7: one that that won the nomination, and so that's the
• 12:54
Speaker 7: that's the guy who's running. We are focused at Americans
• 12:57
Speaker 7: for Prosperity Action on US Senate races and make sure
• 13:00
Speaker 7: that principled leaders are in charge of that chamber.
• 13:03
Speaker 6: Do you think that the governor's financial issues are going
• 13:07
Speaker 6: to herd him in that race?
• 13:09
  Speaker 7: I honest, I don't think so. I don't think folks.
• 13:11
Speaker 4: I agree with you, because I mean people don't seem
• 13:13
  Speaker 4: to care.
• 13:14
  Speaker 7: No, I don't think they do. I mean, listen, he's
• 13:16
Speaker 7: he's a force. He is a force of nature in
• 13:19
Speaker 7: terms of his political popularity in the state. And so no,
• 13:24
Speaker 7: I don't think that's gonna slow him down at all.
• 13:26
Speaker 6: All right, give us a lowdown again on your group

Speaker 6: everything he touches. So the majority says, the texture of
• 16:43
Speaker 6: West Virginia is going to vote for an adulterous child
• 16:46
Speaker 6: molester for president, a fraud businessman who doesn't pay taxes
• 16:49
Speaker 6: or vendors as a senator, and a carpetbagger opioid lobbyist
• 16:53
Speaker 6: for governor. I'm embarrassed to be a citizen of West Virginia,
• 16:56
Speaker 6: says a Texter. Let's welcome in, Brad Michael Hint. Now, Brad,
• 17:00
  Speaker 6: good morning.
• 17:01
Speaker 4: How are you, sir?
• 17:02
  Speaker 5: Good morning? Dave?
• 17:03
Speaker 4: Hi, Hey, that was a nice description, there wasn't I mean?
• 17:05
Speaker 6: I mean, uh, an adulterous child molester, fraud businessman who
• 17:09
Speaker 6: doesn't pay taxes or venitor or as a senator, and carpetbager,
• 17:13
Speaker 6: opioid lobbyist for governor. That's pretty pretty intense man.
• 17:18
Speaker 5: When you when you put it that way, I guess
• 17:21
Speaker 5: you're not going to see any billboards here to.
• 17:24
Speaker 6: Well, not by the candidates, maybe by their their their opposition.
• 17:28
Speaker 6: So before we go any further, Brad, I got to
• 17:31
Speaker 6: address the proverbial elephant in the proverbial room. Do you
• 17:35
Speaker 6: want to you want to address what has happened now
• 17:37
Speaker 6: between you and the governor?
• 17:38
Speaker 4: I mean, what what's up with this?
• 17:39
  Speaker 7: Man?
• 17:41
Speaker 5: Uh? Well, how should I address it?
• 17:46
Speaker 4: There's not a whole lot for you to address, right.
• 17:48
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's really it's really silence on the
• 17:51
Speaker 5: governor's end. So that's what makes it a little bit
• 17:54
Speaker 5: hard that they don't really anymore chew me out or
• 17:59
Speaker 5: state and you know, there's no pushback, it's just silence.
• 18:07
Speaker 5: So to catch listeners off, I guess five weeks ago now,
• 18:13
  Speaker 5: I asked a question during the governor's briefing about a
• 18:17
Speaker 5: federal case a judge in Delaware who put in an
• 18:21
Speaker 5: order moving a significant portion of governor justices family coal
• 18:29
Speaker 5: businesses toward a forced sale. This is Bluestone Mineral, a
• 18:34
Speaker 5: holding company for other businesses, and it's meant to satisfy
• 18:40
Speaker 5: debt by at least one entity. But the repercussion is
• 18:47
Speaker 5: that others who the justices, could get in line and
• 18:52
Speaker 5: sake a claim to whatever whatever comes from the liquidation
• 18:57
Speaker 5: potentially of that business. I thought it was a fair question,
• 19:02
Speaker 5: you know, I really wanted to hear the governor's take
• 19:06
Speaker 5: on it. I thought, you know, asking him was actually
• 19:10
Speaker 5: the fair thing to do. But he he got upset.
• 19:14
Speaker 5: H described it as a hit piece. I will when
• 19:17
Speaker 5: when he describes it that way, I will remind you
• 19:19
Speaker 5: and the listeners. I did not make the federal judge
• 19:22
Speaker 5: in Delaware uh move toward putting these Justice companies up
• 19:26
Speaker 5: for liquidation. That that was not something I actually had
• 19:29
Speaker 5: control over. The Next time there was a briefing, I
• 19:33
Speaker 5: asked about Justice properties in Riley County, Monroe County, and
• 19:40
Speaker 5: McDowell County being put up for sale because of unpaid taxes. Again,
• 19:47
Speaker 5: I had no influence over the local tax authorities. And
• 19:53
Speaker 5: you don't get your property put up in a tax
• 19:56
Speaker 5: sale right away. A lot of time goes by, you
• 19:59
Speaker 5: get a lot of warning, and those property taxes go
• 20:03
Speaker 5: for things that Justice says he supports like local schools.
• 20:08
Speaker 5: I asked him about that, and I, looking back, I
• 20:11
Speaker 5: guess that was the last straw, because he said to
• 20:13
Speaker 5: me that day, Brad, I don't even know why we
• 20:15
Speaker 5: take your questions, and then said that he didn't know
• 20:18
Speaker 5: anything about those tax issues. The next three times there
• 20:24
Speaker 5: was a briefing I put in. You know, so what
• 20:27
Speaker 5: the process is that the Governor's office sends out notifications
• 20:32
Speaker 5: that they're even having a briefing, and then you, the reporter,
• 20:35
Speaker 5: are SVP and say I want to do it. So
• 20:39
Speaker 5: I had other questions, uh, most recently about pe i
• 20:43
Speaker 5: a uh, you know, more government focused questions, and I've
• 20:48
Speaker 5: I've the past three briefing has not gotten any kind
• 20:51
  Speaker 5: of response.
• 20:54
  Speaker 13: Uh.
• 20:54
  Speaker 5: You know, I when I talk about this, I don't
• 20:56
Speaker 5: mean to be whining. It's it's not just about me,
• 20:59
Speaker 5: but the governor, I take it, has decided that some
• 21:03
Speaker 5: questions are off limits and therefore some reporters me will
• 21:08
Speaker 5: not be allowed to participate. To me, that diminishes the
• 21:12
Speaker 5: value of the briefing overall. And he can respond and
• 21:17
Speaker 5: does respond any way he wants, but it's not up
• 21:21
Speaker 5: to him, to my mind, what the subject matter of
• 21:26
Speaker 5: the questions is furthermore, you know, we've learned in recent
• 21:30
Speaker 5: weeks that to me, those were serious enough. I mean,
• 21:35
Speaker 5: a judge saying your your business, your coal properties are
• 21:39
Speaker 5: going to be auctioned off, or your tracts of land
• 21:46
Speaker 5: in three counties in West Virginia with county officials saying
• 21:50
Speaker 5: you're going to be auctioned off, I thought those were serious.
• 21:53
Speaker 5: The announcement of the foreclosure of the Greenbrier and being put
• 21:59
Speaker 5: up a tax auction, well not tax auction, but being
• 22:02
Speaker 5: put up at auction on the county courthouse steps. I mean,
• 22:06
Speaker 5: that's a whole other level. And it just streams credulity
• 22:11
Speaker 5: for the governor to say, oh, these questions about my finances,
• 22:16
Speaker 5: they are they're fake news. Everything turns out all right
• 22:20
Speaker 5: in the end. I mean, to be told that and
• 22:23
Speaker 5: then the next week the Green Broner is being foreclosed upon,
• 22:27
Speaker 5: I mean, it just cammers home that it's a silly
• 22:29
  Speaker 5: position to take.
• 22:30
Speaker 6: Doct to Brad mcklhaney and on I think it was
• 22:32
Speaker 6: Monday Show, Brad I talked a little bit about the
• 22:34
Speaker 6: op ed piece that Phil Kabler did in the Gazette
• 22:37
Speaker 6: Mail on Saturday, and I to be honest, I rarely
• 22:42
Speaker 6: ever agree with a lot of what Phil Kbler says.
• 22:44
Speaker 6: Don't know the guy, but I just, you know, we
• 22:46
Speaker 6: have the difference of opinion on a lot of things. However,
• 22:49
Speaker 6: he brought up the fact that, or brought up the
• 22:51
Speaker 6: question what if the press opted to just not cover
• 22:56
Speaker 6: the conferences, just just boycott them. I mean, I don't
• 22:59
Speaker 6: I don't think that's going to happen. But what would
• 23:03
Speaker 6: you say to that?
• 23:05
Speaker 5: You know, I think we have a professional obligation to
• 23:08
Speaker 5: ask the governor questions. A couple of briefings ago, when
• 23:11
Speaker 5: I was sitting it out, the governor did not address
• 23:18
Speaker 5: during his opening remarks the resignation of Mark Scott, the
• 23:22
Speaker 5: administration secretary, who was over who was over during his
• 23:27
Speaker 5: tenure a variety of state contractual matters, but during the
• 23:33
Speaker 5: last few months of his tenure had a second job
• 23:39
Speaker 5: leading a political action committee and raising funds for that
• 23:43
Speaker 5: political action that political committee. The Governor didn't address that
• 23:49
Speaker 5: at all, and instead talked about a splash pad that
• 23:53
Speaker 5: had recently been installed. All right, good for the slash pad.
• 24:00
Speaker 5: My fellow reporters asked the governor when it was their
• 24:03
Speaker 5: chance three or four questions about the conflict of interest
• 24:07
Speaker 5: and how the administration dealt with with Mark Scott, and
• 24:11
Speaker 5: none of that would have been illuminated if they had
• 24:14
Speaker 5: not asked. So I mean, I think that there is
• 24:17
Speaker 5: still benefit of at least posing the questions to him,
• 24:22
Speaker 5: and then you know, it's a limited forum. He can
• 24:26
Speaker 5: answer how he wants. Sometimes it's a rant, Sometimes it
• 24:30
Speaker 5: bounces off in some other direction. Sometimes he will belittle
• 24:34
Speaker 5: the reporter and the question. But at least you've asked,
• 24:36
Speaker 5: at least you've gotten it out there, and otherwise you know,
• 24:39
Speaker 5: he's just going to do briefings and talk about splash pads.
• 24:43
Speaker 4: We all like splash pads, though, brand right, we do.
• 24:46
Speaker 5: You know. The final thing, I will say that reporters
• 24:50
Speaker 5: are are cats, and I mean maybe some of us
• 24:54
Speaker 5: would would opt out of participating, but the I'll though
• 25:00
Speaker 5: people think of reporters as operating in a pack sometimes
• 25:04
Speaker 5: that does take place with hot news stories. There really
• 25:08
Speaker 5: is no collusion among us, and I mean there's no
• 25:13
Speaker 5: there's no I have no expectation that I'm going to
• 25:16
Speaker 5: influence TV reporters from north central West Virginia. I just
• 25:21
Speaker 5: don't think that that organizing some sort of group boycott
• 25:24
Speaker 5: is truly realistic given the independent nature.
• 25:27
  Speaker 4: Of our profession.
• 25:28
  Speaker 6: There's not a union, that's what you're saying. There's no
• 25:30
Speaker 6: there's no union of reporters all gathering togethering.
• 25:34
Speaker 5: There are no Justice League meetings of reporters now.
• 25:37
Speaker 6: But here's the thing, and I'll get away from the
• 25:39
Speaker 6: press aspect of for a moment. I mean, and Jason
• 25:41
Speaker 6: Huffman of Americans for Prosperity and I talked about it
• 25:45
Speaker 6: a lot of these financial issues with the goather though, Brad,
• 25:48
Speaker 6: it doesn't seem that the public cares. I mean, you know,
• 25:51
Speaker 6: the guy is just so so popular, and that's that's fine.
• 25:54
Speaker 6: I mean, but it's like that they don't to Hobby show.
• 25:57
Speaker 6: Yesterday somebody texted and referred to I think he was
• 26:00
Speaker 6: actually addressed and Hoby directly by telling him he had
• 26:04
Speaker 6: justice derangement syndrome, which that's a new one. I've heard
• 26:07
Speaker 6: of tds. I'd never heard of JDS. But doesn't seem
• 26:11
  Speaker 6: to care.
• 26:12
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, we have no control over public perception, right.
• 26:15
Speaker 5: We are in a very partisan era of society, and
• 26:20
Speaker 5: so it sometimes feels like people just put on their
• 26:23
Speaker 5: jerseys and don't necessarily give any mind to the actions
• 26:30
Speaker 5: or the details, I will say that I think that
• 26:34
Speaker 5: there is, if not public interest, a public interest. So
• 26:42
Speaker 5: when I say that the Justice companies are having their
• 26:45
Speaker 5: land sold off because they have not paid their property
• 26:49
Speaker 5: taxes in Raleigh, McDowell and Nonuroe County, that affects the
• 26:54
Speaker 5: citizens there. That's the local schools, the local fire departments,
• 26:59
Speaker 5: the things that the governor says that he he he
• 27:03
Speaker 5: backs and appreciates and wants to support. The green Brier
• 27:09
Speaker 5: is way behind on its sales taxes. Any other merchant
• 27:13
Speaker 5: Toby and Edith would would have to to remit those
• 27:17
Speaker 5: sales taxes to the state the government. The green Brier
• 27:21
Speaker 5: is behind by three million dollars has has had. The
• 27:25
Speaker 5: State Tax Department, which is in the Justice Administration, put
• 27:29
Speaker 5: leans on the Green Brier over those unpaid sales taxes.
• 27:37
Speaker 5: It is it is both a tax obligation that could
• 27:42
Speaker 5: go to pay for things that the government governor says
• 27:46
Speaker 5: he supports in state government as well as you know,
• 27:51
Speaker 5: potentially a conflict between the ownership of the Green Brier
• 27:54
Speaker 5: and the management of the State Tax Department. So you know, again,
• 27:59
Speaker 5: all all we can do is report and put it
• 28:02
Speaker 5: out there for people to interpret how they may. But
• 28:07
Speaker 5: you know, if people are interested or not, you know,
• 28:12
Speaker 5: that's only one factor in the reporting.
• 28:14
Speaker 6: Right exactly before we let you go, what are you
• 28:16
Speaker 6: actually reporting on other than the governor?
• 28:18
Speaker 4: Today? What's on your radar today?
• 28:20
Speaker 5: Brand news hit a wall yesterday? Jeff Jiggins is going
• 28:26
Speaker 5: down here in the next hour to cover a couple
• 28:30
Speaker 5: of former corrections officers who are accused in the death
• 28:36
Speaker 5: of Quantes Berks in the Southern Regional Jail, a beating
• 28:40
Speaker 5: death where up to eight corrections officers at that jail
• 28:44
Speaker 5: face charges. This will be two of four of those
• 28:49
Speaker 5: who now have pleaded guilty. So that's a significant news
• 28:52
Speaker 5: story today. We have our ears to the ground about
• 28:56
Speaker 5: what is going to happen with the Greenbrier. You know,
• 29:00
Speaker 5: I talk about it. It's a little bit in financial
• 29:03
Speaker 5: and political terms, but certainly the employees and the residents
• 29:09
Speaker 5: of that area it would depend on the Green Brier
• 29:12
Speaker 5: for its economic benefits, are quite worried about what's going
• 29:17
Speaker 5: to happen, and it's I don't know it very well.
• 29:22
Speaker 5: May go to auction as intended on August twenty seventh,
• 29:27
Speaker 5: but you know, a better solution where there will be
• 29:30
Speaker 5: more control over what happens might be to sell it
• 29:33
Speaker 5: before that, to agree to terms with an entity where
• 29:40
Speaker 5: you've got a little more command over the sale price
• 29:43
Speaker 5: and the nature of that entity. So our interest are
• 29:46
Speaker 5: to the ground about that. But I am certainly not
• 29:48
Speaker 5: telling you that there's any kind of impending news. It's
• 29:51
Speaker 5: just an ongoing news interest in what is going on
• 29:55
Speaker 5: with the green Brier?
• 29:56
  Speaker 2: All right?
• 29:57
Speaker 4: Hashtag free bread? You like it? Free bread?
• 30:01
Speaker 5: No, you know the pressure is off me if I
• 30:03
Speaker 5: don't have to participate in these briefings. They are terrible.
• 30:07
Speaker 5: They are always lace, sometimes up to an hour. The
• 30:12
Speaker 5: governor's version of news is usually about taxes, trout or tourism,
• 30:18
Speaker 5: very late stuff, and he will typically not really answer
• 30:22
Speaker 5: the questions posed to him. So please please don't put
• 30:27
Speaker 5: me back in those briefings.
• 30:29
Speaker 6: Okay, be careful what you wish for, all right, band, Brad,
• 30:33
Speaker 6: I appreciate you being here, band, thanks a lot.
• 30:35
  Speaker 5: Thanks.
• 30:36
Speaker 6: Twenty three minutes away from Tama Dave Allen Show on

Speaker 6: There's a Pinnacle Corp. Dot net because what you don't
• 30:56
Speaker 6: know can hurt you. Texas Jim Justice is a faux
• 30:59
Speaker 6: tough who's really a cry baby. Every time he gets
• 31:02
Speaker 6: a tough question, he runs to a safe space and
• 31:04
Speaker 6: hides behind Brian Abraham. If he wasn't good at pretending
• 31:07
Speaker 6: to be a good old boy, he'd be toast as governor.
• 31:09
Speaker 6: So many people hate him. Well, I'm not gonna not
• 31:14
Speaker 6: gonna agree with that last statement that so many people
• 31:15
Speaker 6: hate him. He's one of the four or five most
• 31:17
Speaker 6: popular governors in America. I mean the You can say that.
• 31:22
Speaker 6: It's easy to say, but let me tell you look
• 31:24
Speaker 6: at the look at the numbers. Before we go to breaks.
• 31:27
Speaker 6: Speaking of numbers, I do want to mention this. I
• 31:29
Speaker 6: have the TV on here in the studio, you know,
• 31:31
Speaker 6: catching Partridge Partridge Family reruns or something while I'm supposed
• 31:36
Speaker 6: to be concentrating, but the new poll just came out,
• 31:40
Speaker 6: just flashed across the screen.
• 31:41
  Speaker 7: Here.
• 31:42
Speaker 6: This is from the Marquette Law School, and Kamala Harris
• 31:46
Speaker 6: is in the lead.

  Speaker 4: Good morning, Dave?
• 34:42
  Speaker 17: How are you.
• 34:42
Speaker 6: I'm doing fine for the second day. I guess in
• 34:44
Speaker 6: a row we were reporting about a shooting in Charlestown.
• 34:48
Speaker 17: Yeah, these are unrelated, but yeah, they were about the same,
• 34:50
Speaker 17: about twenty four hours apart. Actually in the city. This
• 34:53
Speaker 17: one this morning. Our curved around two forty five or so,
• 34:56
Speaker 17: and it was on Grace Avenue at a home there.
• 34:59
Speaker 17: Fellow by the name of Sean Perkins, age thirty two,
• 35:01
Speaker 17: and his girlfriend had been invited to a home on
• 35:05
Speaker 17: Grace Avenue. They went there for the night, but at
• 35:08
Speaker 17: some point during the night things started to get ugly.
• 35:12
Speaker 17: According to the police report, Perkins had started threatening his girlfriend.
• 35:17
Speaker 17: They got into several arguments and fights. He had at
• 35:21
Speaker 17: times picked up a gun pointed at her, threatening to
• 35:24
Speaker 17: shoot her. The argument got heated and at some point
• 35:30
Speaker 17: it got to the point that he pointed it at
• 35:33
Speaker 17: her and then the guests, they're the host of the
• 35:36
Speaker 17: that had invited him, he got involved and he and
• 35:39
Speaker 17: Perkins started fighting. Perkins put down the gun. The girlfriend
• 35:43
Speaker 17: then apparently picked up the gun shot him, and it
• 35:46
Speaker 17: was a fatal A fatally shot him. Perkins is now
• 35:49
Speaker 17: dead and authorities are still investigating. Charleston Police say that
• 35:53
Speaker 17: the girlfriend was taken to the hospital for treatment. Of
• 35:57
Speaker 17: multiple injuries that she had received in the altar. She
• 36:01
Speaker 17: remains in stable condition and this time no charges have
• 36:04
Speaker 17: been filed, but they are going to pass the investigation
• 36:07
Speaker 17: over and all the evidence to the prosecutor's office to
• 36:10
Speaker 17: determine if any charges are to be filed in this incident.
• 36:13
Speaker 17: So very tragic situation there on Grace Avenue this morning
• 36:18
Speaker 17: is what started as verbal altercations and threats turned into
• 36:23
  Speaker 17: a shooting death.
• 36:24
Speaker 6: And it could be could very well be that they're
• 36:27
Speaker 6: going for self defense in this possibly, I know we're not,
• 36:29
Speaker 6: we're not going to play lawyers, but possibly a.
• 36:32
Speaker 17: Lot of times when when when you hear the police
• 36:35
Speaker 17: say that they have not filed charges, they're going to
• 36:37
Speaker 17: pass it over to the prosecutor to review, they sort
• 36:39
Speaker 17: of leave that to the discretion of the prosecutor that
• 36:41
Speaker 17: there might be a question about that, and and that's
• 36:44
Speaker 17: usually what that indicates. So and it will be at
• 36:48
Speaker 17: the purview of the prosecutor as to whether anyone should
• 36:50
  Speaker 17: face charges.
• 36:50
Speaker 6: Tragic story. You the way, Chris, I appreciate you being here.

  Speaker 6: I don't know, But I mean, Kenny does a great

• 44:03
Speaker 6: So there you go, Kenny, if you're listening, you have
• 44:06
Speaker 6: a challenge today. Somebody wants you to look into it
• 44:08
Speaker 6: for although I don't know what more could be uncovered
• 44:10
Speaker 6: with the justice financial situation, And again, it all goes
• 44:14
Speaker 6: back to the fact of and it's not. As Brad
• 44:16
Speaker 6: I think wisely pointed out, it is the job of
• 44:19
Speaker 6: the media to put it out there, but it's not
• 44:21
Speaker 6: our job to tell people what you should think about it.
• 44:23
Speaker 6: And the majority of the people in West Virginia simply
• 44:27
Speaker 6: don't care. So the media does the job of putting
• 44:30
Speaker 6: it out there, whether it's Brad or whether it's Steven
• 44:32
Speaker 6: Allen Adams or anybody, any of the find news media
• 44:34
Speaker 6: we have in the state. They put it out there.
• 44:36
Speaker 6: But if the bubblic that doesn't care, then that's on

Speaker 6: them and it's not the media's job to tell them
• 44:41
  Speaker 6: they should care.
• 44:41
Speaker 4: Can you put it out here? You do with it?
• 44:43
Speaker 6: You do with it to what you want. I want
• 44:46
Speaker 6: to follow up do a little follow up from yesterday's show.
• 44:49
Speaker 6: I had on Rob Cunningham, who was the president of

• 44:54
Speaker 6: among other things, the growth of Putnam County and the
• 44:58
Speaker 6: influx of students I mean into the school system. And
• 45:02
Speaker 6: we had a text to the show after mister Cunningham
• 45:04
Speaker 6: had left, and the texture asked a question about and
• 45:08
Speaker 6: I had the text pulled up here. I'll see if
• 45:09
Speaker 6: I can ask Okay, here this is the actual text,
• 45:11
Speaker 6: the text that asked Cunningham how they have adjusted staffing
• 45:15
Speaker 6: on the northern side of the river due to the
• 45:16
Speaker 6: enrollment drops. Fact says the Texter Putnam County has lost
• 45:20
Speaker 6: over eight hundred students in the last ten years, and
• 45:23
Speaker 6: mister Cunningham had already left, but he obviously was listening
• 45:27
  Speaker 6: because I got a text.
• 45:29
Speaker 4: I got a text to the show with some facts

  Speaker 4: and figures.
• 45:31
Speaker 6: He texted me and said, I'm going to have you

Speaker 6: by voters in Putnam County, would do a number of
• 45:48
Speaker 6: things to facilities around the county, with one of those
• 45:52
Speaker 6: being the construction of a new middle school for Hurricane.
• 45:56
Speaker 6: That school is they hat some age on it, definitely.
• 46:00
Speaker 6: President Cunningham provided me through the Putnam Candy Board of
• 46:04
Speaker 6: Education with the enrollment for Hurricane Middle School going back
• 46:09
Speaker 6: to the two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine
• 46:11
Speaker 6: school year all the way to this year. Now, the
• 46:13
Speaker 6: peak year for enrollment for this particular school, twenty seventeen
• 46:17
Speaker 6: to twenty eighteen. That was the school year that they
• 46:19
Speaker 6: had the most students, with oney thirteen. This year they
• 46:24
Speaker 6: sat at eight hundred and thirty eight. So the text
• 46:30
Speaker 6: is right, and of course the texture was referring I
• 46:32
Speaker 6: think to the northern side of the river. But we'll
• 46:34
Speaker 6: talk about the entire county. The numbers have gone down
• 46:39
Speaker 6: as far as enrollment goes, but so is every public
• 46:42
Speaker 6: school because here's here's the bottom line. Parents for one
• 46:49
Speaker 6: reason or another are simply not sending their kids to
• 46:53
Speaker 6: public schools as much as they used to all over
• 46:56
Speaker 6: West Virginia. I mean, you know, an old guy speaking
• 46:59
Speaker 6: here back. You know, when I was a kid, you
• 47:01
Speaker 6: went to public school, or there was like one one
• 47:03
Speaker 6: other Christian school in the county where I grew up,
• 47:06
Speaker 6: and that was it. And but now there are so
• 47:08
Speaker 6: many more options, and COVID, I think, really really laid
• 47:14
Speaker 6: a lot of options out on the line, and parents,
• 47:16
Speaker 6: some parents found that they want to go a different direction,
• 47:19
Speaker 6: be that a virtual virtual academies, charter schools, private schools,
• 47:23
Speaker 6: home schooling. There's just a lot of options out there.
• 47:28
Speaker 6: And it is also worth noting though that the population
• 47:32
Speaker 6: of Putnam County is expected to grow a lot. It
• 47:35
Speaker 6: already is with with new Core in the next county
• 47:39
Speaker 6: over in Mason County, it's already started, as as I said,
• 47:43
Speaker 6: And there's a proposed Amazon facility in Fraser's Bottom. So
• 47:47
Speaker 6: there's gonna be a lot more people I think moving
• 47:49
Speaker 6: in there. But I do appreciate the numbers from President
• 47:52
Speaker 6: Cunningham and mister Hudson and folks with the Putnam County
• 47:55
Speaker 6: BOE and also to the Texture for bringing it up.
• 47:58
Speaker 4: I definitely appreciate it.

Speaker 6: Donald Trump has been shot out in more times than
• 48:14
Speaker 6: Tim Walls, the vice president nominee has. Before he cut
• 48:18
Speaker 6: and run for the National Guard he was about to
• 48:19
Speaker 6: be deployed. He should be called Tim A.
• 48:22
Speaker 4: Walls, says says a Texter.
• 48:26
Speaker 6: This is something that as we close the show this morning,
• 48:29
Speaker 6: something I've talked about in the past and it's back
• 48:33
Speaker 6: in the news again, and that is the banning of
• 48:36
Speaker 6: cell phones, or at least limiting their usage in public
• 48:40
Speaker 6: schools Chesapeake, Ohio. Got a good radio buddy of mine
• 48:44
Speaker 6: who lives in that area not far from here, of course,
• 48:48
Speaker 6: and in that particular area Chesapeake, Ohio, they are limiting
• 48:53
Speaker 6: the use of cell phones in the public schools. Marsha
• 48:58
Speaker 6: Kavallik has a story posted this morning wv Metro News
• 49:01
Speaker 6: dot com that now Berkeley County schools are rolling out
• 49:06
Speaker 6: a plan that would greatly limit cell phone usage. Now,
• 49:10
Speaker 6: under the plans there, this is Berkeley County. We're talking
• 49:12
Speaker 6: about the use of smartphones and cell phones of all types.
• 49:16
Speaker 6: Smart watches, earbuds, AirPods, and Bluetooth headphones will be prohibited
• 49:22
Speaker 6: during class time, not overall, just during class time now
• 49:27
Speaker 6: for kids in grades six through twelve, students can bring
• 49:30
Speaker 6: the devices to school, but they have to be placed
• 49:33
Speaker 6: on silent or turned off during actual instructional time. They
• 49:38
Speaker 6: would be allowed to use them in the mornings before
• 49:41
Speaker 6: classes start, during lunch, and after school. The fact that
• 49:47
Speaker 6: we even have to have this discussion baffles my mind.
• 49:49
Speaker 6: But again, old guy and old guy without kids here,
• 49:51
Speaker 6: So no, do I have it?
• 49:53
Speaker 4: Do I have the right to say anything?
• 49:55
Speaker 6: For kids in pre k to fifth grade of phones
• 50:00
Speaker 6: pretty much can't be visible. Now I'm not sure why
• 50:04
Speaker 6: fifth grader needs a phone to begin with. But again,
• 50:06
Speaker 6: old guy, no kids.
• 50:08
  Speaker 15: So uh.
• 50:09
Speaker 6: But this is in Berkeley County. Some school systems in
• 50:13
Speaker 6: other areas have put in place systems where kids turn
• 50:17
Speaker 6: in their phones when classes start. They have locked bags
• 50:21
Speaker 6: and they hand over the phones as soon as the
• 50:23
Speaker 6: class begins, like if they still do a tardy bell,
• 50:26
Speaker 6: I don't know they they had, and they hand the
• 50:28
Speaker 6: phones over to the to the to the teacher. They're
• 50:30
Speaker 6: put in a locked bag. To Texas, why would a
• 50:36
Speaker 6: PreK student have a phone? Good point? Why would any
• 50:39
Speaker 6: caid have a phone.
• 50:40
Speaker 4: But that's that's just me. But they put the bag,
• 50:42
Speaker 4: the phones in the lock bags.
• 50:43
Speaker 6: And so I'm gonna get into this a little bit
• 50:45
Speaker 6: later because I want to get your side of what
• 50:47
Speaker 6: you think of all this. But Dave Allan showing five
• 50:49
