Speaker 1: The Joe Rogan Experience.
• 0:06
Speaker 2: Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day.
• 0:12
  Speaker 3: What's happening? What's happening?
• 0:14
Speaker 1: Good to see you.
• 0:15
  Speaker 3: Same.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: We were just talking. Sorry, I had to pause Jamie
• 0:20
before the podcast. So you were telling me that LeBron
• 0:22
James is not going to go back to the Lakers.
• 0:25
  How old is he now?
• 0:26
  Speaker 4: Forty-one.
• 0:29
  Speaker 3: 41. Yeah.
• 0:31
Speaker 1: What is the oldest that an elite athlete has been?
• 0:34
  Speaker 4: Tom Brady's 44, I think, NFL QB. That'd be pretty
• 0:39
  high up there.
• 0:40
Speaker 3: How old was Kareem?
• 0:43
Speaker 1: That's a good question. How old was Kareem when he retired?
• 0:45
Speaker 4: Bernard Hopkins, I think, would be the next.
• 0:47
Speaker 1: Bernard Hopkins is number one.
• 0:49
  Speaker 3: Yeah, Bernard Hopkins.
• 0:50
Speaker 1: We were talking about how he beat Kelly Pavlich at 42.
• 0:54
Speaker 3: But Bernard had a couple of years to.
• 0:57
  Incubate a little bit.
• 0:59
Speaker 1: Oh yeah you know about that yeah not take damage
• 1:04
and steal up the mind he uh he had the
• 1:08
most intense discipline that guy never got out of shape
• 1:11
which is also a giant contributor to longevity never never
• 1:15
was building back you know he wasn't like a 42
• 1:18
year old who was like You know, he took six
• 1:20
months off. I haven't been in the gym.
• 1:23
  Speaker 3: No, no, no.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: Every day it was running, nutrition. Everything was always on point.
• 1:29
  Never buried.
• 1:29
Speaker 4: Kareem was like 42, I think.
• 1:31
Speaker 1: So he might be the oldest of the past guys.
• 1:35
But this was before all the science, right?
• 1:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, the science changes things.
• 1:39
Speaker 1: The science. So we were just talking about the science. So, Jamie,
• 1:43
what are they allowed to take and not allowed to take?
• 1:44
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 1:47
Speaker 4: It's like the NBA used to, like, I think. For
• 1:50
  weed stuff, they.
• 1:50
Speaker 5: Used to say that they'd get tested, I think, October 1st,
• 1:53
which is right when preseason starts.
• 1:55
  Speaker 1: For weed?
• 1:56
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:56
Speaker 4: And so as long as you were clean on October 1st,
• 1:59
then you're good because they wouldn't test.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: The rest of the year. That's ridiculous.
• 2:04
Speaker 5: But now, I know in the NFL, if you have
• 2:07
a crazy game, you're going to get tested the next day.
• 2:09
They're just going to check you for what was going
• 2:11
  on with you yesterday.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: Yeah, why would you play good?
• 2:14
  Speaker 3: Ridiculous.
• 2:14
Speaker 4: I don't think the NBA does that specifically, but I
• 2:17
  don't know.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: Honestly. So what are the rules in the NBA in
• 2:20
terms of marijuana now? I thought that was part of
• 2:23
the thing that they negotiated in the contract to make sure.
• 2:25
Because a lot of players like to be high when
• 2:27
  they play.
• 2:29
Speaker 4: I think they might just have just stopped testing for
• 2:32
  it is all.
• 2:33
Speaker 1: I want to mention names. But I'm friends with some guys,
• 2:36
and they tell me they can't play unless they're high.
• 2:40
That's the same thing with pool players. I know a
• 2:41
lot of pool players. They like to get lit. Before
• 2:45
  they get on the table.
• 2:46
Speaker 3: Pool, you should be lit playing pool.
• 2:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, you feel things better. Here we go. NBA can
• 2:52
randomly drug test each player up to four times during
• 2:54
the season and two times in the offseason with additional
• 2:57
tests allowed any time there is reasonable cause. But marijuana
• 3:01
is no longer part of the standard testing panel. Yes, sir. Yeah,
• 3:05
so they can smoke weed, which makes sense. Let them.
• 3:08
It's not. What are you doing? It's not hurting anybody,
• 3:11
and they play better with it.
• 3:13
  Speaker 3: I think.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: Leave them alone. That's what I think. Unless they're doing meth.
• 3:17
  You know what I mean?
• 3:20
Speaker 5: They also had another big betting scandal that's kind of
• 3:23
broken recently in the last 24 hours there.
• 3:27
  Speaker 3: Oh, no.
• 3:27
Speaker 4: Where a player has been called out for throwing at
• 3:30
least four games. And then where that's going to go
• 3:34
from here is kind of being speculated online.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: I'll tell you where that goes. If people find out,
• 3:39
it goes to Bullets. That's the problem. The problem with
• 3:42
someone throwing a game is somebody bet on that fucking game.
• 3:46
A lot of people bet on that game.
• 3:47
Speaker 4: The two cases I've seen, though, are the overs.
• 3:50
Speaker 5: They had player props, and he needed 4.5 rebounds, and
• 3:53
he has four, and he's just trying extremely, extremely, extremely
• 3:56
hard to get that extra rebound.
• 3:58
Speaker 4: Which is like, that's wrong.
• 4:00
Speaker 1: Wait a minute. That's not that bad. That means he's
• 4:01
  playing well.
• 4:02
Speaker 5: And the other one, which was he was fixing a
• 4:04
spread in the last second. Like he sprinted down the
• 4:07
court to get an extra basket with like three seconds
• 4:09
on the clock when they were down by ten or
• 4:11
  seven technically to beat.
• 4:13
Speaker 4: The eight and a half point spread.
• 4:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, but so what? He's just scoring.
• 4:18
Speaker 5: How can you ever– It's just– when you watch basketball enough,
• 4:21
you go, like, that doesn't happen that often.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: Why would you do that? That's gross.
• 4:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, especially– yeah, you're used to people throwing the ball
• 4:28
in the air, just throwing it down there, not you
• 4:31
  running down.
• 4:32
Speaker 1: I know, but if you can do it and score,
• 4:34
why wouldn't you do it? I don't even understand why
• 4:36
  anybody would question that.
• 4:37
Speaker 3: You're down by 10. It's five seconds to go. The
• 4:40
  game is over.
• 4:40
Speaker 1: Fuck you. I want that ball in the net.
• 4:42
  Speaker 3: Fuck you. Man.
• 4:44
  Speaker 4: Woof.
• 4:44
Speaker 3: No– Why? Because that's not going to change. Oh, we
• 4:50
  lost by eight. It's over.
• 4:52
Speaker 1: It just means you're competitive to the end. You never
• 4:55
give up, even though you know you're losing.
• 4:57
Speaker 3: And no starters on the floor at this time. You're
• 5:00
down by 10. It's five seconds to go. No starters
• 5:04
  on the floor.
• 5:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's not like he's missing on purpose. So
• 5:07
it's one thing if the guy's like missing on purpose,
• 5:10
but if he's scoring on purpose, leave him the fuck alone.
• 5:14
  All right.
• 5:14
Speaker 5: So similar thing, World Cup just happened like two, three
• 5:16
nights ago where they just got into the knockout round,
• 5:19
you know, so the big tournament was every team plays
• 5:22
three games to figure out where you figure, where you
• 5:25
end up to play the next part of the tournament.
• 5:26
Speaker 4: 10 teams get eliminated.
• 5:28
  Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
• 5:29
Speaker 5: Third place team for the first time ever can make
• 5:31
it through. And so there was a, I think it
• 5:33
was Algeria and I forget the other team.
• 5:35
  Speaker 4: Sorry.
• 5:36
Speaker 5: But, If they both tied, they both move through. If
• 5:40
one team wins and one team loses, one team goes through.
• 5:44
And then with four minutes to go in the game,
• 5:47
they're kind of just passing the ball around, the score
• 5:48
is tied, and one team goes ahead and scores. And
• 5:51
it kind of starts a fight on the field where
• 5:53
you see the other team yelling at the other team, like,
• 5:56
fuck you. I don't know exactly what they're saying, but what?
• 5:59
And then with two minutes to go, The other team
• 6:02
sort of just stops playing defense and kind of seems
• 6:05
to let them score. Oh, God.
• 6:09
Speaker 4: Is that a big collusion or if they just sort
• 6:11
  of made an agreement?
• 6:14
Speaker 1: Don't they have mics on those guys? It's such a
• 6:18
crazy— They have to have mics on somebody. They have
• 6:20
strong mics now, and they have people that can lip read.
• 6:23
They can pick up, hey, motherfucker, you're supposed to leave
• 6:26
  this a tie.
• 6:27
Speaker 6: If that happens, you can't play anymore, right?
• 6:30
Speaker 1: What happens to those guys? They have to get suspended.
• 6:32
Speaker 4: For— That'd be the entire— that' d be both teams.
• 6:34
  Speaker 7: The coaches.
• 6:34
  Speaker 4: It'd be everybody.
• 6:35
  Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
• 6:36
Speaker 4: I don't really know how it's going to pan out,
• 6:38
  but it was very.
• 6:39
  Speaker 1: What a conundrum.
• 6:41
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 6:42
Speaker 1: How could you do that? Like, I hate that. This
• 6:47
is what I don't like about sports betting. Not that
• 6:50
because that's about advancing. But about sports betting is even
• 6:53
the consideration that a person is playing a certain way
• 6:57
because they're worried about a spread or because they've been
• 7:00
paid off to not score or they've been paid off
• 7:03
to foul. The problem with these things is you can
• 7:07
  bet on anything.
• 7:09
Speaker 3: You can bet on anything.
• 7:10
  Speaker 1: Anything.
• 7:12
  Speaker 3: Anything.
• 7:12
Speaker 1: So if you're a crooked and– What has been the
• 7:16
most crooked aspect of the fucking human race over the
• 7:19
past 100 years, other than the legal system? The most
• 7:23
crooked aspect has been sports betting. It's always crooked.
• 7:27
Speaker 3: Sports and politics. Politics. They damn near.
• 7:30
Speaker 1: They're all the same.
• 7:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, they're the same.
• 7:31
Speaker 1: It's the same. It's money. Anytime there's money involved and
• 7:34
decisions can be shifted, influence can be used to make
• 7:38
  something happen.
• 7:39
Speaker 3: But it seems like that with most things that people...
• 7:44
you know, have some type of, you know, hierarchy desire for. They... 100%.
• 7:50
They gonna put something in, you know, like, even with, like,
• 7:55
awards and games, this is a... who can promote the
• 7:59
best and who can... If you can take all the
• 8:03
people that vote to dinner and, you know, smuse them
• 8:11
at dinner, it's gonna be a... a thing where who's
• 8:15
going to beat you when you have all the voters.
• 8:17
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 8:18
Speaker 3: Or you have a situation where you have people that
• 8:21
work for your company that can vote. How are you
• 8:25
not going to vote for the project that the company
• 8:28
put out? Right. Yeah. We got 60 voters. We at
• 8:33
  least got 60 votes.
• 8:35
Speaker 1: I think you said it best when you said the hierarchy.
• 8:37
That's really what it is. It's in anything that has
• 8:39
any kind of a hierarchy. Politics is the ultimate example.
• 8:42
Speaker 3: Politics is the ultimate example. Ultimate example.
• 8:45
Speaker 1: But there's that hierarchy shit in everything in the world. Everything.
• 8:50
  And it trips people up.
• 8:51
Speaker 3: But with politics, it is a little more detrimental than
• 8:56
with sports. Sports is, you know, you're gambling, people trying
• 8:59
to win things. But with politics, it's like, if you're not,
• 9:06
somebody that's not qualified can be in a position where
• 9:12
You know, they make decisions on the masses of people's lives.
• 9:16
Speaker 1: Not just that. They can appoint judges.
• 9:19
  Speaker 3: Which is?
• 9:19
Speaker 1: They can appoint crazy judges. Like, there's obviously judges, like,
• 9:23
they have disputes. Well, why do they have disputes? Because
• 9:26
they're ideologically captured on both sides. There's people that are like,
• 9:30
you know, like, certain right-wing judges. You throw some case
• 9:33
out there that's a right-wing case, abortion rights, whatever it is, immigration,
• 9:38
you know how they're going to vote. Same thing with
• 9:40
left-wing people. Like, hardcore left-wing people, you guarantee. Trans women
• 9:44
in sports? Trans women are women. Let them play in sports.
• 9:47
That was a recent Supreme Court order. Three judges said
• 9:51
that trans women should be able to play in women's sports.
• 9:53
The rest of them said, fuck no. The other six
• 9:56
  canceled it out, luckily.
• 9:58
Speaker 3: And, you know, those people are not— taking into account
• 10:02
the sport. Like, it's a difference if you was originally
• 10:06
something and now you're playing as something else. Your strength
• 10:10
is different. And, you know, you don't feel that until
• 10:13
your daughter gets knocked out the ring where she's supposed
• 10:16
to be boxing somebody that They're the same gender. Then
• 10:20
now she's, her whole side of her face broke from,
• 10:23
  you know.
• 10:23
Speaker 1: It's insane. It's insane. And it's not cruel to not
• 10:26
let that happen in sports. That's what Title IX is
• 10:28
about in the first place. Give women the opportunity to
• 10:31
play in an equal time as men. That's a good thing.
• 10:36
Having men that think they're women play with women is
• 10:39
fucking crazy. It doesn't mean, you know, you need to
• 10:42
cast those people out of society. It doesn't mean anything.
• 10:46
Live and let live. I agree. But get the fuck
• 10:49
  out of the women's room.
• 10:50
Speaker 3: You have a dick.
• 10:52
Speaker 1: Get the fuck off the team. You're running track at
• 10:55
a literal women's Olympic level and you're 15. Why? Because
• 11:00
you have a dick. This is crazy. You're not really
• 11:02
  a girl. This is nuts.
• 11:04
Speaker 3: That's the world we live in. I'm not even going
• 11:08
to say that's the world we live in. That's the
• 11:09
world that's being presented to us at this point.
• 11:12
  Speaker 1: That's right.
• 11:13
Speaker 3: You know, there's a lot of things like this, man.
• 11:16
  Speaker 4: You know.
• 11:17
Speaker 3: This is why in comedy I choose not to go
• 11:22
the current affair or the political route because I don't
• 11:28
have time to separate the room. I'm too busy trying
• 11:30
to do things to bring the room together, and that's
• 11:34
more of a righteous aim for me.
• 11:38
Speaker 1: Well, you– I said this before, so I'll say it
• 11:40
live publicly. What you've done is very extraordinary because you've
• 11:44
made a giant following online completely organically. It's very inspiring
• 11:49
because all you do is just do your thing the
• 11:52
best that you can and put it out there and
• 11:54
it just keeps growing. It's amazing. It's very cool. It's
• 11:58
very inspirational. And you should be proud of it because
• 12:02
what you've done, like I said, it's totally organic. Like
• 12:05
you don't have a bunch of production companies pushing you
• 12:09
and trying to make you more popular than you are. No,
• 12:12
it's all just putting it out there and getting this
• 12:16
gigantic following just from your work. Just the work.
• 12:19
Speaker 3: Appreciate it. And then, you know, even with that, you
• 12:21
still have some type of responsibility to not see things
• 12:28
the same as other people. Like, I just got all
• 12:32
this flack about me talking about how this business of
• 12:37
people inflating things has caused depression in comics. You know,
• 12:43
that we're supposed to be a happy craft. But now
• 12:47
it's this big push about if you're not on social
• 12:50
media you're not on this you're not on it a
• 12:52
lot of these comics are you know going through this
• 12:54
mental health thing where they always sad about their numbers
• 12:59
uh you know or this and the third like yo
• 13:01
man it it is a it's a thing and some
• 13:04
people inflate things and everybody wants to be on the
• 13:08
same level so sometimes you you can't be oh you
• 13:14
can't But people look at it as a certain way
• 13:18
where when you're proud of the steps that you've taken.
• 13:21
And if I played in the G League, that's not
• 13:25
the NBA. So I wouldn't say that I played in
• 13:29
the league because I know what the league means. I
• 13:30
know this says this is the G League. But when
• 13:35
I present myself, yo, you know I play in the league.
• 13:38
People automatically think the NBA. You know, it's not– the
• 13:42
G League is not– and not knocking the G League,
• 13:44
but that's not the first thing that comes to my mind.
• 13:47
You know, it's just playing for the Washington Generals is
• 13:53
not the NBA. Even though you played against the Globetrotters,
• 13:57
they were great players. But we know how this game goes.
• 14:01
But people– that's how people see things now.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: Well, the numbers thing is real. The numbers thing is
• 14:07
a real problem with people because it gives you a
• 14:10
quantifiable measure of whether or not you're doing well. And
• 14:14
if you already have anxiety, which a lot of comedians have,
• 14:18
you're already like socially awkward, which a lot of comedians are.
• 14:21
You don't feel accepted, which is how a lot of
• 14:23
comedians feel. And then you look at those numbers. You're
• 14:26
like 2,400. I only have 2,400 followers? I've been doing
• 14:30
comedy for seven years. Why do I only have 2,400 followers?
• 14:32
And then you go to someone's page that you'd never
• 14:34
even heard of. They have 1.2 million. You're like, what
• 14:36
  the fuck?
• 14:37
Speaker 3: And, and so this is about being grateful in the
• 14:43
position that you, you're in. I remember when they would,
• 14:47
people was pushing me, oh, you need to get on
• 14:48
the internet. You need to be on social media. Okay.
• 14:52
But I would see those people that had all those followers.
• 14:56
And that same year, The year before that, I did
• 14:59
a half-hour special with Comedy Central. Then year 2018, I
• 15:03
did a full-hour special with Comedy Central. I had 500
• 15:09
followers on Instagram. I had 300 subscribers on YouTube on
• 15:16
a page that I didn't own. I had to fight
• 15:19
to get this page. I had less people on Facebook,
• 15:25
but I was efficient in what I was doing. So
• 15:28
the numbers didn't, they didn't pick me because I had
• 15:31
these numbers. They picked me because I came and I
• 15:34
did what I did. And then they, oh, he's great.
• 15:38
So then we started going, you know, a route to
• 15:42
build it up, but we were already getting things prior
• 15:46
  to the numbers. Right.
• 15:47
Speaker 1: What year is this again?
• 15:48
  Speaker 3: This is 17 and 18.
• 15:50
Speaker 1: Okay. So the difference is that in 17 and 18,
• 15:54
people were just starting to be aware of of the
• 15:57
power of social media. And then they were really concentrating
• 16:02
on different comics that had a large social media following.
• 16:06
You know, I think that was like right when it
• 16:07
  first started happening.
• 16:09
Speaker 3: Dane Cook had blew up before that.
• 16:11
Speaker 1: That was a, yeah, that was a MySpace.
• 16:12
Speaker 3: That was a MySpace thing.
• 16:13
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 16:14
Speaker 3: Internet, another internet thing. That's true.
• 16:15
Speaker 1: That's true. That was different. But the difference is like
• 16:18
he had gotten so huge just from that, that he
• 16:21
  was already doing like arenas.
• 16:23
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 16:24
Speaker 1: And, So he was already huge, and then they just
• 16:27
went with him. But he was, like, super popular. Now it's, like,
• 16:31
super popular on social media. It's one of the most
• 16:33
  important things.
• 16:35
Speaker 3: So now moving up to this, because I have a
• 16:38
strong one with this. So I have a million followers here,
• 16:43
a million followers there, all these specials. I still didn't
• 16:45
get invited to the BET Awards. I still don't get
• 16:48
invited to. a bunch of things. I still get looked
• 16:52
over for things, even though I have numbers and success,
• 16:55
but I don't worry about it. I'm just in my,
• 16:57
I'm not watching to judge myself against what somebody else
• 17:01
is doing. It's guys who have less everything, but they're
• 17:05
in this, they're in this realm where they, they had
• 17:08
every day at everything. I see guys is that everything
• 17:11
with no, um, with no specials and no proven thing.
• 17:16
They just around. And I'm like, okay, but it's, I
• 17:21
think the point that I'm not judging myself up against
• 17:24
  what somebody is doing socially.
• 17:26
Speaker 1: But that's also easier when you're successful. And you're successful.
• 17:31
You're very successful. So the difference is like when you
• 17:33
sell out these shows and you put out these specials.
• 17:36
I've seen your specials. They have millions of views. So
• 17:39
it's like obviously you have a following. If you didn't
• 17:42
and you were doing the same thing, then it would
• 17:44
be a problem. But then also it's like comedy in
• 17:48
a lot of ways– Not always, but in a lot
• 17:50
of ways, it's a meritocracy. If you're good, people will come.
• 17:54
It's that simple. Fight Night is here. Title shots, debut killers,
• 17:59
and the rising contender nobody's talking about yet, and only

Speaker 3: But I also have no desire to inflate things and
• 19:18
compare myself to somebody or make myself seem like I'm
• 19:23
more than what it is. Like, guys are, hey, man,
• 19:26
I'm at this room. I got 50 tickets sold. Okay.
• 19:32
How much the room seat? The room seat, 300. Okay, cool.
• 19:36
You had 50 people more than if you didn't play
• 19:41
the role. You know what I'm saying? Because who knows
• 19:43
you in Utah? It's a building thing. Like, I got
• 19:48
all of this... all of this going on. But if
• 19:51
I go to Utah, I'm in a comedy club. It
• 19:56
doesn't matter what happened the night before. I was just
• 19:58
in the arena. But in Utah, it's like, it takes
• 20:01
me back to on Trading Places. He said, hey man,
• 20:06
he gave all this elaborate what this watch is. And
• 20:09
that man said, This is what this calls in St. Louis. Like,
• 20:13
I don't care about you pawning the watch.
• 20:15
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 20:15
Speaker 3: And so I don't have that. And I'm not, if I,
• 20:21
it's like you own the club. Okay. It's guys that
• 20:24
can come to your club and sell your club out.
• 20:27
And then it's guys that come to the club and
• 20:30
you pay for the room. Okay. Then it's guys, like
• 20:34
when you in the theater, some, you can scale a
• 20:36
theater down. Some theaters hold 4,600 people. But you can
• 20:41
scale it down to 2,000. But then the... I'm not
• 20:46
going to say if the room holds 4,600, I put 2,000
• 20:51
tickets on sale. I didn't sell out the theater. I
• 20:57
sold what I put on sale. You know what I'm saying?
• 21:00
Because I'm not to the point where I can get
• 21:02
the 4,600 yet. If I could sell the room out,
• 21:05
then I... I will need to relish the real accomplishment
• 21:08
  versus the lesser accomplishment.
• 21:11
  Speaker 1: Inflating.
• 21:12
Speaker 3: Yeah. And because I don't have this thing where I'm
• 21:18
in competition with what happened before me.
• 21:23
  Speaker 1: With other people.
• 21:24
Speaker 3: So I'm in San Antonio. We at the theater. Because
• 21:30
people can make you feel bad about anything. If you're
• 21:33
a person that feels bad, just think. So Minnesota, it's
• 21:40
all these people that's on the team that play for
• 21:43
the Boston Celtics that are millionaires. They're already millionaires. They
• 21:47
play in the league. Boston traded seven people to Minnesota
• 21:54
for one person, Kevin Garnett. They got rid of seven
• 21:59
human beings altogether. For one person. So it's like if
• 22:04
I was a person that felt bad about my career,
• 22:07
this would make me feel bad. Like the first person
• 22:10
that they asked, okay, I'm going to trade this person
• 22:13
for that person. They're like, no. Well, I'm going to
• 22:14
give you two more people. They're like, no. And then, well,
• 22:17
I'm going to give you four more people. They're like, okay.
• 22:21
And a lottery pick. Okay. I'm going to feel horrible.
• 22:26
They traded me for seven people. Y'all didn't even want me. Realistically.
• 22:30
So Boston went, they got Kevin Garnett. I mean, yeah,
• 22:35
Kevin Garnett and seven other millionaires. They got all this money.
• 22:40
They went to Minnesota. So if somebody wanted to make
• 22:47
you feel bad about something, they could if that's how
• 22:50
you are. So I'm in San Antonio. The line is
• 22:54
around the block. The place is sold out. It's the
• 22:57
same sell out no matter who comes in that lady
• 23:01
said to my face you should have saw it when
• 23:03
Matt Rife came I was like in my mind I
• 23:10
was like and I asked I said was it a
• 23:12
different theater she said no same theater so when Matt
• 23:16
Rife came he sold it out I sold it out
• 23:18
two nights I mean two days in the same night
• 23:21
but her thing was you should have saw it when
• 23:23
Matt Rife came I was like.
• 23:26
Speaker 1: Okay she probably wanted you to feel bad.
• 23:29
  Speaker 3: But I'm not.
• 23:30
Speaker 1: Good for you. But the thing is a lot of
• 23:32
people would. That's what it is. A lot of people
• 23:35
are in competition with other people. I think you should
• 23:38
be inspired by other people. If you want to compete
• 23:40
in that way, be inspired. But the moment you turn
• 23:43
  it into a negative, it's like you're a fool. You're
• 23:45
  being a fool.
• 23:46
  Speaker 3: Compete in charity.
• 23:47
Speaker 1: Also, inspiration is power. It's fuel. If you see someone
• 23:52
doing well, so you see someone set and you like it,
• 23:55
that's fuel that makes you want to go work. Makes
• 23:57
you want to get some shit done. It gives you energy.
• 24:02
Or it could cripple you if you're a dummy. If
• 24:04
you're a dummy and you get angry and you get
• 24:07
bitter and then you just put all this negativity on
• 24:09
the person who's doing better than you, which a lot
• 24:11
  of people do.
• 24:14
Speaker 3: That's a weird dynamics in this business when you know
• 24:18
that it's going to be people. No matter what you're doing,
• 24:22
it's going to be somebody doing better than you. When
• 24:25
I was... In comedy clubs, I remember being there and
• 24:30
they were papering the room. Okay. I wasn't saying I
• 24:36
was selling out. They was papering the room. I know
• 24:38
out of all these, 300 people in there, 240 of
• 24:42
these people came because it was freezing. They sent out
• 24:46
their email blasts. But then what I looked at was
• 24:51
  they wanted to come.
• 24:52
Speaker 1: Yeah. They wanted to come. They're probably comedy fans, which
• 24:55
is why they were on the email list in the
• 24:56
first place. And then those people, you give them a
• 24:59
  great show, they'll come back.
• 25:01
Speaker 3: Then the next time I came, they didn't pay for
• 25:04
the room. They sold the tickets.
• 25:06
Speaker 1: That's how it used to be, man. That was the
• 25:08
old days before social media. You would build a market.
• 25:11
So you would just show up at Philadelphia once a year.
• 25:13
Show up. Do your homework. Make sure you got a
• 25:17
tight set. You've been practicing. You're ready to rock. Fuck
• 25:21
these people up and then leave. And then they're like,
• 25:23
can't wait till you guys are back again. And then
• 25:25
next time you come back, you know, all right, I
• 25:28
built an audience now. I can't disappoint these people. I
• 25:31
got to get fired up. And that's what it used
• 25:33
to be. It used to be a totally organic thing
• 25:35
  across the whole country.
• 25:37
Speaker 3: Is it a thing? Is it a difference, in your opinion,
• 25:40
between me bringing my audience to a venue from whatever
• 25:48
other thing that I do versus... people coming that don't
• 25:54
know anything about me and me winning that person over
• 25:59
  versus the person. Yeah.
• 26:00
Speaker 1: It's a different thing. You know, people are coming to
• 26:03
see you specifically. You've already won them over. That's a
• 26:06
different thing. Or they want to take a chance on you.
• 26:08
That's a different thing. Cause I've heard about you, but when,
• 26:11
you know, that's a completely different thing. Cause that's your,
• 26:15
you have an audience. Now you have fans when you
• 26:18
are just performing in a club and it's a papered room.
• 26:21
You have an opportunity. You have an opportunity to turn
• 26:24
these people into fans. You have an opportunity to give
• 26:26
these people a great night and have a good time.
• 26:28
And also you're doing your fucking thing, which is the
• 26:30
most important thing of all. Everybody is results oriented. I
• 26:34
try to be process oriented when I with everything I do.
• 26:38
I'm process oriented. I think about. There's a goal that
• 26:41
you got to reach, but how do you get to
• 26:43
that goal? The way you get there is not thinking
• 26:46
about the goal. The way you get there is thinking
• 26:49
about what you're doing. What's the process? The process is
• 26:52
writing bits, performing them, tweaking them, getting them tight, knowing,
• 26:57
reviewing tapes, going over your material, going over your writing,
• 27:01
talking with friends. And then every day it gets a
• 27:04
little bigger. Every day it gets a little better. Every
• 27:06
day that knife gets a little sharper. That's the process.
• 27:10
That's the process that leads you to become whoever, whoever
• 27:13
  you are.
• 27:14
Speaker 3: And then you add other little pieces in that process.
• 27:17
I remember I was talking to Bobby Lee and me
• 27:21
and Bobby Lee talking. I said, Bobby, you don't realize
• 27:24
where you met me at. And he's like, well, is
• 27:28
this going to be a good story or is it
• 27:29
a bad story? Bobby's got a lot of bad stories.
• 27:32
I said, you met me at the Houston Improv. And
• 27:38
they called me and asked me, did I want to host?
• 27:41
A room that I already sell out, you know what
• 27:44
I'm saying? They asked me, did I want to host?
• 27:46
I said, cool. So I came and I hosted and
• 27:50
I was not trying to, but I was destroying his feature.
• 27:55
  I'm just hosting.
• 27:57
Speaker 1: Well, you should not be hosting, especially at the Houston Improv.
• 28:01
Speaker 3: But my thing was, this was years, this was years ago.
• 28:04
But I say, Bobby, you don't understand. When I was
• 28:07
hosting at the Houston Improv, I was doing something that
• 28:12
most people didn't understand why I was even doing it.
• 28:15
And they would see, like, why would you be hosting?
• 28:18
I said, because I'm not going to be in front
• 28:19
of Bobby Lee's audience. But it's people that live in
• 28:22
Houston that his audience, that I have no idea who
• 28:26
I am. I said, Bobby, but before you, I said,
• 28:30
I was coming to the Houston Improv hosting for multiple people,
• 28:35
and I was just winning over fans that would never
• 28:40
had seen me if they wasn't coming to see you.
• 28:42
They wouldn't be coming to my show. I said, so
• 28:44
before that, it was you were last, Bobby. It was you,
• 28:48
and the week prior to that, it was Monster Bronny.
• 28:51
And the week prior to that was my girl Angela Johnson.
• 29:00
Ansel Johnson. And before that, it was some random white guy.
• 29:06
I said, I just came. And I want to do
• 29:11
a comic. So me hosting was no big deal. I
• 29:14
wasn't working. So I said, well, let me just come
• 29:16
host it. That's what they want me to do. So
• 29:19
I gained fans from four different audiences in a month.
• 29:23
So when I came back, they was like, yo, I
• 29:26
saw you with Miles Ebrani. And so I came back
• 29:28
to see you. when you put your show up. I'm like, cool.
• 29:33
So my process, that was a part of my process.
• 29:36
It didn't matter who I hosted for. I was like, okay. cool.
• 29:41
You know, let me go like when I hosted for
• 29:45
Bill Burr. Bill Burr was like, this is crazy. We
• 29:49
in Austin at the Paramount and I said, the worst
• 29:54
thing about this was that at the time I was
• 29:56
wearing all black and I went to the show And
• 30:01
when I walked on stage, the first thing I said is, hey,
• 30:04
I do not work here. Like eight people asked me,
• 30:10
  where's the bathroom?
• 30:10
  Speaker 1: I don't know.
• 30:11
  Speaker 4: I don't work.
• 30:12
Speaker 3: But it was like, I look like an usher. Like, yo,
• 30:17
this sucks. But it was a cool gig.
• 30:20
  Speaker 1: That's hilarious. That's a smart approach. I mean, that's a
• 30:23
great way to build, especially if you're already headlining. Yeah,
• 30:28
I think that thing about concentrating on the process. People
• 30:31
should try to apply that to everything. My friend John Dudley,
• 30:36
who taught me archery, he's a big believer in that,
• 30:40
being process-oriented. So you get better at archery. And he
• 30:44
used to compete all over the world, travel, compete in
• 30:47
archery tournaments. I think that applies to everything. I think
• 30:50
it applies to music. I think that applies to everything.
• 30:54
I think one of the things that trips people up
• 30:56
about social media, a lot of these young guys in particular,
• 30:58
young people in particular... is that they are thinking about
• 31:02
other people and they are comparing themselves to other people
• 31:04
and they are looking at those numbers. And you're looking–
• 31:08
you're spending all of your energy. If you haven't allotted
• 31:10
100 units of energy in a day, you're spending a
• 31:14
disproportionate amount on things that don't empower you and actually
• 31:19
kind of fuck your head up. Not good for you
• 31:21
at all. Instead of saying, wow, I am chasing the
• 31:25
fucking dream. I am out here being a professional comedian.
• 31:30
And I have a real chance to develop a real following.
• 31:33
If I put my time in, I put my effort,
• 31:35
I really care and I really work hard, I could
• 31:37
sell out a theater one day. That's possible. Like that's
• 31:41
a goal. It should be a goal just like getting
• 31:43
your PhD in chemistry or whatever the fuck it is
• 31:46
your goal is. But the process is what's important. The
• 31:50
process is like appreciating what you're doing, why you're doing it,
• 31:53
and just– bearing down and doing your best. That's it.
• 31:57
  Speaker 3: That's it.
• 31:58
Speaker 1: And other people, you look at them as inspiration. Other
• 32:01
people that are kicking ass, you know, don't go, don't
• 32:03
get become a hater. That shit is so bad for you.
• 32:07
I know so many dudes who have like hater tendencies
• 32:10
  and they never excel.
• 32:12
  Speaker 3: Never.
• 32:13
Speaker 1: It's the, the counter thinking of an, an excellent person
• 32:18
is a hater. Someone was always trying to diminish people
• 32:20
and downplay people and look at someone in the, least
• 32:23
charitable way and the worst possible way to somehow or
• 32:26
another trying to make themselves feel better. But it doesn't work.
• 32:29
It does the opposite of work. It robs you. It
• 32:32
robs you of your self-esteem. It robs you of your self-respect.
• 32:35
You're spending so much time thinking about this other dude. Like, why?
• 32:39
Speaker 3: It's a lot of energy. And my dad, this is
• 32:42
one story that I did not put in the special
• 32:45
that I should have. And my dad had all these thoughts.
• 32:51
And he was I literally say he was a crazy man,
• 32:53
but when you think about the things that he would say,
• 32:55
it made sense. My dad, and why would you be
• 32:58
telling me this at the age that, but he just
• 33:01
gave it to me. I think I was like 11,
• 33:03
and my dad out of nowhere would say, you know something?
• 33:07
People spend the same time and money on being fake
• 33:12
when they can put that same time and money into
• 33:14
  being real.
• 33:15
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 33:16
  Speaker 3: And I'm like, I didn't know, I didn't understand what
• 33:18
that meant, but as I got older, if you spend
• 33:25
any money or time faking something, you could probably spend
• 33:30
that money and time being real about something.
• 33:34
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 33:34
Speaker 3: You know, why go buy a fake necklace to act
• 33:40
like you rich when you can go buy a real necklace?
• 33:44
It was saying at some point it was saying, and,
• 33:47
you know, be actually be rich, you know, if that's what,
• 33:50
if you compare it to necklaces, but I just didn't
• 33:54
understand it at the time. But then as I got older,
• 33:56
I understood like, why put this, why put this time
• 34:00
in to pretending when you can put that same energy
• 34:05
and then become real at what you do. It makes
• 34:07
  no sense.
• 34:08
Speaker 1: My uncle Vinnie, when I was six or seven years old,
• 34:13
I was staying at his house with my cousins. And, uh,
• 34:17
We were supposed to brush our teeth. And I didn't
• 34:20
like following rules, period. And so I wouldn't brush my teeth. Instead,
• 34:24
I would take toothpaste and smush it around on my teeth.
• 34:27
And so that when they smelled my breath, they would
• 34:29
smell toothpaste. And my uncle explained to me, he goes,
• 34:34
I understand why you're doing it. He goes, but the
• 34:37
amount of time that you're spending pretending to brush your teeth,
• 34:40
you could have just brushed your teeth. And I thought
• 34:42
about that when I was six. I was like, damn.
• 34:45
I was just a little kid, but I was like.
• 34:46
  Speaker 3: Ah, he's right.
• 34:48
Speaker 1: Why am I faking brushing my teeth? I was six
• 34:55
years old. My Uncle Vinny was like super patient, super calm.
• 34:59
Out of all my family members, he was the strangest.
• 35:02
Out of all these wild, crazy Italian people, like he
• 35:07
was an artist and he was like very soft-spoken and
• 35:10
never got angry about anything. He would always speak really rationally.
• 35:14
I was like, God, he's so smart. He's just so peaceful.
• 35:18
But the way he laid it out, he didn't say, hey,
• 35:20
I know you're not brushing your teeth, you little fuck.
• 35:23
  Speaker 3: What's that?
• 35:24
Speaker 1: It was the time you're spending pretending to brush your teeth.
• 35:27
You could have just brushed your teeth. But it was
• 35:29
like sometimes adults will say something to you like that
• 35:32
when you're six. And it just gets in your head
• 35:34
and you're like, whoa, okay. That just saved me a
• 35:38
  whole lot of time.
• 35:40
Speaker 3: Like I can just brush them.
• 35:42
Speaker 1: Just brush your fucking teeth. Stop pretending. Stop faking. It
• 35:46
doesn't help anything. It does the opposite.
• 35:49
Speaker 3: It does the opposite. And, you know, people, the truth
• 35:54
  sometimes is hurtful to people.
• 35:58
Speaker 1: The truth doesn't feel good, you know, to a lot
• 36:01
of people, unfortunately. But, you know, you have to look
• 36:05
at it. You have to have perspective.
• 36:08
Speaker 3: But that's the ultimate hate right there. That's the ultimate
• 36:12
hate is for me to give you a falsehood instead
• 36:15
of tell you the truth right that's the ultimate it's
• 36:18
  the ultimate hate.
• 36:19
Speaker 1: Especially if like you're making up a background for yourself
• 36:23
you're making up a story about your life that's not
• 36:25
true you're pretending you're somewhere in life that you're not.
• 36:30
Speaker 3: You know yo man just do the thing just do
• 36:33
  the thing.
• 36:34
Speaker 1: Yeah but it's hard for people it's hard for people
• 36:37
and then there's a lot of people that think you
• 36:38
just fake it until you make it And you hear
• 36:41
stories of this guy. I had $ 500 in my bank account,
• 36:44
but I told them I got this. I got that loan.
• 36:47
And next thing you know, my business is making all
• 36:49
this money. And you go, wow, he faked it until
• 36:52
he made it. And it worked. And you think it's
• 36:54
  going to work, but.
• 36:55
Speaker 3: It doesn't work most of the time. That's so few
• 36:57
and far between. Then they never tell you that that
• 36:59
guy goes to jail later for fraud.
• 37:04
  Speaker 1: Yes, 100%.
• 37:05
  Speaker 4: 100%.
• 37:05
Speaker 3: The feds busted my house three years later and took everything.
• 37:08
  You're like, okay. Exactly.
• 37:10
Speaker 1: Like when they arrested Carl Spence here recently for all
• 37:13
his counts of tax fraud. I was like, okay. I
• 37:17
don't want that to happen to him, but.
• 37:21
  Speaker 3: There it is.
• 37:24
Speaker 1: Right? I mean, that's what it is.
• 37:26
Speaker 3: I'm not laughing at Carlos. I'm just laughing at the
• 37:29
fact that you're like, yeah, when they bust his car.
• 37:33
Speaker 1: I mean, it didn't bring me any joy to see that.
• 37:35
I don't like anybody getting arrested for taxes. I think taxes,
• 37:41
until they have an accurate account of where the fucking
• 37:45
money goes, and until you completely eliminate all fraud and
• 37:51
waste— What the fuck are you doing locking people up
• 37:55
for not paying taxes? Like, you guys should get locked
• 37:59
up for not doing a good job with our money.
• 38:03
Speaker 3: So what do you think about all the new purchases
• 38:06
and redoing the White House and all this with tax dollars?
• 38:10
Speaker 1: Did they do it with tax dollars? How much money
• 38:12
did they spend in tax dollars to do the ballroom?
• 38:15
  Speaker 3: Let's find out.
• 38:17
Speaker 1: They need a ballroom, though. That's how that guy snuck
• 38:20
in with a gun because they tried to do that
• 38:21
White House Correspondents Dinner in a hotel. That dude who
• 38:25
got arrested a few months back.
• 38:27
Speaker 3: What's this resolution, the pool, something full of algae right now?
• 38:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know about that. That's something about making
• 38:36
the pool look nice. Whatever that is, reflecting pool. Reports
• 38:41
indicate the new White House East Wing Ballroom is projected
• 38:44
to cost about $ 600 million with roughly half just over
• 38:48
$ 300 million coming from taxpayer-funded government accounts, despite earlier promises
• 38:53
that it would be taxpayer-free. $ 300 million sounds like a
• 38:57
lot until you find out how much money they spend
• 39:00
on other things. When you find out just how much
• 39:03
fraud is in NGOs, how much fraud is in nonprofits,
• 39:08
how much fraud is in insider trading and propping up
• 39:13
companies so that they can get better deals.
• 39:16
  The whole thing is fraud.
• 39:18
Speaker 3: The thing is, if you're spending, I understand how much
• 39:23
money goes in other things, but if you're spending any
• 39:26
money that's my money that I don't know. that I
• 39:31
need it or that's not really the aim, the goal...
• 39:34
You should be able to vote on it. You should
• 39:36
be able to vote on it. You should be able to.
• 39:37
Speaker 1: Vote on where all your tax money goes.
• 39:40
Speaker 3: How much tax money is being spent on getting smart
• 39:42
people in places, making smart children?
• 39:45
Speaker 1: That's the big one.
• 39:46
  Speaker 3: That's the thing.
• 39:48
Speaker 1: The big one is... If you look at our country
• 39:52
as a community, and that's what we're supposed to be doing.
• 39:54
We're supposed to be the United States of America. All
• 39:56
that bullshit aside, that was the one good thing that
• 39:58
happened about 9-11. When 9-11 happened, after that, we were
• 40:02
all united. It was crazy. It was crazy. We realized
• 40:06
we are actually on a team. So if we're on
• 40:08
a team, why do we have these deeply impoverished neighborhoods
• 40:12
for decades and decades that are riddled with crime and
• 40:14
  drug abuse?
• 40:15
  Speaker 3: Why?
• 40:16
Speaker 1: Is it impossible to fix? That's crazy. That's not true.
• 40:20
It's just no one's tried to fix it. No one's
• 40:22
done any effort to fix it. And if you did
• 40:25
fix it, you want to make America great. Here's the
• 40:28
best way. Less losers. And how do you get less losers?
• 40:32
More opportunities for people. More opportunities, more support, more education,
• 40:36
more everything that you need if that was your neighborhood.
• 40:40
And if we did that, we'd have to switch the
• 40:43
way our system runs. But that could be done, man. Yeah.
• 40:46
Speaker 3: You don't have to have losers.
• 40:48
  Speaker 1: Not that many.
• 40:49
Speaker 3: That's the thing about make America great, right? If you're
• 40:54
trying to make anything great, don't you need intelligent people
• 40:56
  to do that?
• 40:59
  Speaker 4: Of course.
• 40:59
Speaker 1: That's the number one thing.
• 41:00
Speaker 3: So when we have all these divisive people that's on
• 41:05
a lower vibration, how is that making the country great
• 41:13
  if we're putting.
• 41:15
People in position that don't have the experience or the
• 41:20
education in those things. And then we just saying a
• 41:23
bunch of divisive things. You know, it was, if I'm
• 41:29
watching the extravaganza that happened in the White House, what
• 41:34
was the thing Michelle Obama is a man? Like, how
• 41:37
did that help? How did that help?
• 41:39
Speaker 1: That guy says that every time he.
• 41:42
Speaker 3: Does a speech. But what is the thing? First of all,
• 41:46
It's it's really divisive because you know that a large
• 41:50
portion of the country is going to take this. It's
• 41:52
going to have a problem with this. You know, clearly
• 41:54
she's not a man. But it makes no sense like to.
• 41:59
I've never seen this many people say so many damaging
• 42:03
things about a past president. It's like he's still on
• 42:06
the forefront. And it's not like. We have a president
• 42:10
that's doing the greatest job for this country, you know,
• 42:14
which is weird, a weird thing to me. And people
• 42:17
are going to ask, is that what's the belief? That's
• 42:21
the real belief of people? That's the real thing?
• 42:23
Speaker 1: Well, listen, there's some crazy people that believe the world
• 42:26
is flat. There's a lot of dumb beliefs. There's probably
• 42:28
people that do believe Michelle Obama's a man. What that
• 42:31
guy does, he's like a pro wrestler. Like, he's got
• 42:34
a character called the Incredible Hulk. It's very crazy. Corny
• 42:38
in a lot of ways. Sometimes it's cringy. But the
• 42:42
point is he gets a lot of attention, a lot
• 42:45
of attention because of all this. That's what he's doing.
• 42:48
So what he's trying to do is maximize the amount
• 42:51
of attention that he can get for a very short
• 42:53
window of career. This is not how he really feels,
• 42:56
how he really thinks. When you talk to him in
• 42:57
real life, he's very reasonable. This is an act that
• 43:00
he does, like a pro wrestling act. But what he
• 43:03
can do is fight. He's really good. And that's what's
• 43:06
so confusing about it all. So you got this guy
• 43:09
who's created this fake persona where he puts on an
• 43:12
American flag bandana, comes out to Hulk Hogan music, does
• 43:15
all his interviews with sunglasses on, has a bunch of crazy,
• 43:18
silly rhymes, and says ridiculous shit just trying to get attention.
• 43:22
The most amount of attention. It is very divisive. Don't
• 43:25
get me wrong. But that's by design.
• 43:27
Speaker 3: So he's Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage in the same person.
• 43:31
Speaker 1: But an actual fighter.
• 43:32
Speaker 3: But an actual fighter.
• 43:32
Speaker 1: And a really fucking good one, man. He just knocked
• 43:35
out Derrick Lewis at the White House. Derek Lewis has
• 43:37
the most knockouts in the history of the sport.
• 43:39
Speaker 3: Don't do that. Don't do that, Joe.
• 43:41
  Speaker 1: Don't do what?
• 43:42
Speaker 3: Don't say that so excited because Derek Lewis go to
• 43:46
the same gym. Main Street Boxing Gym in Houston. I'm
• 43:49
  very close to that.
• 43:50
Speaker 1: Dude, I love Derrick Lewis.
• 43:51
Speaker 3: I don't like the fact that Derrick Lewis lost that fight.
• 43:54
Speaker 1: I think Derrick of 10 years ago would have been
• 43:58
a real fucking problem for that dude. Because Derrick of
• 44:01
10 years ago, you couldn't hold him down. He would
• 44:03
just get up. There's a whole compilation of people trying
• 44:06
to hold Derrick Lewis down. He just gets a hand
• 44:09
on you and just whoop. His grip, they did that
• 44:12
UFC grip thing where they test the grip. Everybody's like 140.
• 44:16
The strong ones are like 160, 190. Derrick just squeezed
• 44:20
it casual, 218. And they were like, what the fuck?
• 44:24
Speaker 3: So you see how problematic this was for me. You
• 44:27
already beat my friend. Then you turn around and say.
• 44:30
Speaker 1: He beat a 40-year-old Derrick Lewis.
• 44:32
Speaker 3: A 40-year-old Derrick Lewis. Then turn around and say, Michelle
• 44:34
Obama's the man. I was like. Okay, you know what
• 44:36
  I'm saying.
• 44:36
  Speaker 1: I know what you're saying.
• 44:37
  Speaker 3: I'm pissed.
• 44:38
  Speaker 1: Listen, you're right.
• 44:39
  Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm pissed.
• 44:40
Speaker 1: You're right. But I'm telling you, if you met that
• 44:42
dude in real life, you would get it. He's just
• 44:46
  a dude. He's just a guy who's a competitive wrestler,
• 44:49
played in the NFL, and he's like, I got to
• 44:51
do something to figure out how to get people to
• 44:54
pay attention to me. Because it can't just be fighting.
• 44:57
It's not enough. If you look at Conor McGregor, you
• 44:59
look at Sugar Sean O'Malley, You look at these guys
• 45:02
that have these flamboyant personalities, these big personalities. Cassius Clay
• 45:06
is the original example. They get an immense amount of attention,
• 45:10
and that translates into much more money and much more opportunities.
• 45:14
There's no fucking way that guy would have gotten that
• 45:18
fight at the White House if he couldn't fight. Because
• 45:21
the fight that he had before that, he fought Curtis Blades,
• 45:23
who was a top 10 UFC heavyweight, huge wrestler. And
• 45:27
they went to war, dude. I mean, he put it
• 45:29
on him for three fucking rounds. Like, Curtis just has
• 45:32
an insane heart and survived it. But that guy can
• 45:35
fucking fight. But just that alone is not enough. You
• 45:38
got to get attention. I don't agree with it. I
• 45:41
wouldn't do it. It's not my thing. I don't like it. Right?
• 45:44
But I get it and it's smart.
• 45:46
Speaker 3: With Muhammad Ali, though, he was very respectful in his act.
• 45:52
you know, to get attention, you know.
• 45:54
Speaker 1: Just like he wasn't. I mean, he wasn't with other people,
• 45:57
but he would show up at fucking Sonny Liston's house
• 46:00
and scream about him on his fucking front lawn at
• 46:03
four in the morning. He did wild, crazy shit. He
• 46:08
did a lot of what he was just all about
• 46:10
getting your heart rate up, getting your emotions in there.
• 46:13
He was so fucking smart. He knew before everybody that
• 46:17
you could just get somebody into a frenzy and they
• 46:19
wouldn't be able to sleep. Their whole life revolved around
• 46:23
fighting you. And I can't let this guy beat me
• 46:25
  in the fear of losing.
• 46:27
Speaker 3: He's going to keep you weak.
• 46:28
Speaker 1: It's going to keep you. You're not going to be
• 46:30
able to eat as much food. You're going to feel nervous.
• 46:32
Speaker 3: But you see what happened when somebody called him Cassius Clayton.
• 46:35
Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Who was that? What fighter was that?
• 46:40
He kept punishing him, saying, what's my name?
• 46:42
Speaker 3: Your mama name. Your mama name. But that didn't work
• 46:44
out for him. He beat the sleeves off of him.
• 46:46
Speaker 1: He beat the piss out of him, and he carried him.
• 46:48
He carried him while he was beating his ass. Dude,
• 46:51
he was a special, special guy. I'm not comparing him
• 46:56
in terms of his cultural significance to Josh Hokut, because
• 47:01
my parents, my mother, and my stepfather were hippies. They
• 47:03
never watched fighting. But when he had a rematch with
• 47:07
Leon Spinks, that's how much of a cultural figure he was.
• 47:10
They wanted him to beat Leon Spinks. They're like, oh,
• 47:13
my God, he's got to win. He's got to win.
• 47:15
Hippies sitting in front of the fucking TV in, like, 1970,
• 47:18
  whatever it was.
• 47:19
Speaker 3: How crazy it is they have Italian hippies. Because I
• 47:24
heard it. It was like my family was like, I
• 47:26
  thought they was Italian.
• 47:30
Speaker 1: Well, they were hippies, but, you know, my grandmother went
• 47:32
to jail for running numbers for the mob. So it's like,
• 47:36
there was a lot of, uh, okay. There was a
• 47:39
  lot of real Italian.
• 47:41
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 47:42
Speaker 1: Grandma went away for a little bit. She wouldn't rat
• 47:46
him out. So she did some time.
• 47:49
  Speaker 3: I was at a, I was at a show one
• 47:50
time and I said, um, well, the Africans and in,
• 47:56
in here and this Italian dude, he's from Sicily. He
• 48:01
raised his hand and I said, And the people were like,
• 48:06
why is he raising his hand? I was like, he knows. Like,
• 48:11
  he knows.
• 48:12
  Speaker 1: He knows.
• 48:13
Speaker 3: So he was like.
• 48:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a really good reason why Sicilians have darker hair,
• 48:18
  curly hair, darker skin.
• 48:20
Speaker 3: He was like, yeah.
• 48:21
  Speaker 1: The Moors.
• 48:22
Speaker 3: And that's all I said was, he knows. And people
• 48:25
who got it, they was like. Right, right, right. And
• 48:29
at that point, it's like when people don't know that
• 48:32
you have some sort of level of intelligence. Yeah, you
• 48:35
got some information. They're like, oh, okay. Like, yeah. It's
• 48:40
a big thing. But that's funny, though. Italian hippies. But
• 48:43
  my grandmother also.
• 48:45
Speaker 1: Well, yeah, there was a lot of hippies back then, man.
• 48:47
And I think the original idea behind it was great.
• 48:51
And I was just watching this thing today about the
• 48:53
CIA and LSD and what they did. It was really funny, man.
• 48:56
  It was a.
• 48:57
  Speaker 3: That video?
• 48:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, that cute Animal Day show. Isn't it dope? See
• 49:01
if you can find it. Put it up because it's
• 49:02
  kind of cool.
• 49:03
Speaker 4: There's conveniently an MKUltra hearing going on right now.
• 49:06
  Speaker 1: Oh, how convenient.
• 49:08
  Speaker 3: Listen, bro.
• 49:10
Speaker 1: I got it right here, Jamie. I'll send it to you.
• 49:12
They 100% are still doing that. No ifs, ands, or buts.
• 49:16
If you think they did that in the 60s and
• 49:17
they 100% did. if they're doing mind control experiments on
• 49:21
people and they're influencing people's opinions and half of the
• 49:25
reason why people are at odds with each other all
• 49:27
day long online is probably government intervention at one point
• 49:32
or some government's intervention. If not ours, Russia and China.
• 49:37
Speaker 3: This is wild that The CIA created the hippie movement.
• 49:40
Speaker 7: And your mom's favorite band probably helped them. In the 1950s,
• 49:44
the CIA bought up the world's supply of LSD. They
• 49:47
brought it to the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, who reverse
• 49:50
engineered it, giving them an unlimited supply and a complete monopoly.
• 49:54
Then the testing started. One early volunteer for these tests
• 49:57
was Ken Kesey. Kesey wrote a book inspired by this experience,
• 50:01
which became a bestseller. Then Kesey went on to host events,
• 50:04
which he called acid tests. And he wasn't charging anyone,
• 50:08
he just wanted people to show up and do acid.
• 50:11
For these events, he hired an unknown house band called
• 50:13
The Grateful Dead. These events became wildly popular and with
• 50:17
them rose the popularity of the band. So The Grateful
• 50:19
Dead begins touring and Kesey follows them around in a
• 50:22
  bus from show to show.
• 50:23
Speaker 3: And everywhere he went.
• 50:24
Speaker 7: He brought a vat full of Kool-Aid laced with LSD.
• 50:27
This guy had a seemingly endless supply, exporting the hippie
• 50:30
culture all around the U.S., Meanwhile, the CIA is flooding
• 50:33
college campuses with LSD under the guise of research. And
• 50:37
the Grateful Dead was just one of many bands in
• 50:39
this movement. At the same time, in Laurel Canyon, came
• 50:42
a wave of musicians with something in common. They were
• 50:44
all children of high-ranking military officials. The biggest names in music.
• 50:49
Jim Morrison of the Doors was the son of an admiral.
• 50:51
Frank Zappa's father was a chemical warfare specialist. Even Crosby, Stills,
• 50:55
and Nash. Yeah, all three of them. And all of
• 50:58
these bands as well. The theory is the CIA orchestrated
• 51:01
the hippie movement to steer a very real anti-war movement
• 51:04
into something a little easier to combat.
• 51:07
Speaker 1: Dissent without teeth. The hippie slogan was literally, Turn.
• 51:10
Speaker 3: On, tune in, and drop out.
• 51:15
Speaker 7: In other words, do acid and remove yourself from society.
• 51:18
And a lot of them did drop out of society
• 51:20
to go live in communes in the woods. This intersection
• 51:23
between hippie culture and the CIA could all be a
• 51:26
great big coincidence. Maybe military brats naturally want to rebel.
• 51:30
And maybe the CIA was giving away acid because they're.
• 51:33
  Speaker 1: Chill like that.
• 51:34
Speaker 7: Maybe the CIA created the hippie movement. And your mom's
• 51:37
  favorite band probably helped them.
• 51:40
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 51:40
  Speaker 1: Isn't that wild?
• 51:42
  Speaker 3: That's crazy.
• 51:43
Speaker 1: That's wild. They also had a big influence on gangster rap.
• 51:47
Big influence on promoting gangster rap.
• 51:51
Speaker 3: Oh, for sure. 100% proven.
• 51:52
  Speaker 6: 100%.
• 51:53
Speaker 1: 100%. Yeah. They wanted to fill prisons.
• 51:55
Speaker 3: You want to push that over anything else, you know,
• 51:58
because we can look at how rap music changed and
• 52:02
  what it changed in 1992.
• 52:04
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 52:05
Speaker 3: After 1992, there was like no more positive rap.
• 52:09
Speaker 1: Well, it was whenever Straight Outta Compton came out, because
• 52:11
I was in Boston at the time. I remember to
• 52:14
  the day it happened.
• 52:16
Speaker 3: But Straight Outta Compton wasn't a drug-filled-induced album. If you
• 52:23
look at a lot of the songs that was on
• 52:25
that album, it was rebellious songs against the system.
• 52:31
  Speaker 1: Fuck the police.
• 52:32
Speaker 3: And then... 1992, man, when they decided, yo, we don't
• 52:37
want no more De La Soul. We don't want no
• 52:40
more Tribe Car Quest. We don't want no, you get
• 52:42
them leather medallions off you. It's like, yo, we need, like, yo,
• 52:52
self-destruction and West Coast All-Stars, they was like, what? They
• 52:58
coming together? Hell no. Hell no. No, we need this
• 53:02
to be divisive. We need them to separate. And that's
• 53:05
crazy that the biggest times that I've experienced this country
• 53:10
being together was the Olympics when the Dream Team came, 9-11,
• 53:17
and COVID. That's the biggest time that we, the three
• 53:23
biggest times I've ever even seen us together.
• 53:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, because we need something. We need something that's real.
• 53:30
We need some sort of an event that makes us realize,
• 53:33
first of all, the fragility of life. That's important. And
• 53:36
we have to realize that we're all supposed to be
• 53:38
  a part of a team.
• 53:41
Speaker 3: And you can't play on a team if your teammates
• 53:45
  don't think that you're valuable.
• 53:47
Speaker 1: Not only that, you can't play on a team if
• 53:49
your teammates are poisoning you. If your teammates are allowing
• 53:52
you to eat rotten food so that you can't play
• 53:55
and maybe giving you inferior gear on purpose. And maybe
• 53:59
keeping you in a place where you can't get sleep
• 54:02
so that you're not going to evolve. You're always going
• 54:06
to be tired. You're going to be fatigued. So you're
• 54:07
never going to get better at whatever the fuck it
• 54:09
is you're doing. You're never going to advance in life.
• 54:12
You're going to be tired. You're going to be on drugs.
• 54:14
You're going to be poor. This episode is brought to
• 54:17
you by Armra. Every week there's some new wellness hack
• 54:20
that people swear by. And after a while you start thinking,
• 54:23
why do we think we can just outsmart our bodies?
• 54:27
That's why Armra Colostrum caught my attention. It's something the
• 54:31
body already recognizes and has hundreds of these specialized nutrients
• 54:35
for gut stuff, immunity, metabolism, etc. I first noticed it
• 54:40
working around training, especially workout recovery. Most stuff falls off,
• 54:44
but I am still taking this. If you want to try,
• 54:46
Armra is offering my listeners 30% off plus two free gifts.
• 54:51
  Go to armra.com slash rogan.
• 54:54
Speaker 3: This is how I see it.
• 54:56
  Speaker 1: That's not a good team.
• 54:57
Speaker 3: This is how I see with parenting. It's hard to
• 55:00
parent if your number one goal is survival. Right. You
• 55:05
know what I'm saying? It's hard to parent.
• 55:07
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 55:07
Speaker 3: You know, you got to parent from a comfortable space.
• 55:11
You can't parent from... Nervous chickens really don't lay eggs.
• 55:15
That's true. So the thing is, you... like the way
• 55:21
I parent now versus how my mom, my mom was
• 55:24
strictly survival. So my thing is survival first. Right. You
• 55:28
know what I'm saying? Then the rest of it. You know,
• 55:31
I don't remember going to, um, on vacation with my parents,
• 55:38
  you know, like vacation.
• 55:40
  Speaker 4: What?
• 55:42
Speaker 3: Right. Your mom working two jobs and going to school
• 55:45
trying to better, she's just taking care of you. Right.
• 55:47
So I'm not, my kids go on vacation. You know,
• 55:52
it's different. You know, so I see things from both
• 55:57
sides all the time because I'm in, which makes me grateful.
• 56:02
I'm grateful that I can do the things I can
• 56:04
do with my family, you know what I'm saying, versus
• 56:08
parenting from a place of frustration.
• 56:09
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 56:10
Speaker 3: You know, but I understand this, this frustration thing. You know,
• 56:17
I'm trying to take care of you and, you know,
• 56:19
and then sometimes I look at my kids like, You
• 56:21
know what I'm saying? You have it really easy because
• 56:23
if I wouldn't have washed them dishes, my mom would
• 56:26
  have destroyed me.
• 56:28
Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
• 56:30
Speaker 3: Because her mindset is, hey, I'm trying to take care
• 56:32
of y'all. Y'all got the help in this. You know,
• 56:35
with me, it was like we have a housekeeper. You
• 56:38
know what I'm saying? The housekeeper come in four days
• 56:42
out the week, you know, and now I'm like, so
• 56:45
you just going to throw that stuff on the floor
• 56:47
and you making it hard for the housekeeper?
• 56:49
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 56:49
Speaker 3: You know, the reason why she's here four days a
• 56:51
week is so to make your life easier. But you're
• 56:54
adding on to... By being lazy. By being lazy.
• 56:58
  Speaker 1: Like, I don't... There's a balancing act, right? You want
• 57:01
to protect your children, but you don't want them to
• 57:05
develop soft. You want them to be able to take
• 57:09
care of their own problems. And you want them to
• 57:12
be able to understand the consequences of their actions. So
• 57:15
there's this, like, fine line of, like, encouragement and punishment
• 57:22
and like explaining to them how your life was different
• 57:27
and you have to appreciate this life this is very
• 57:29
unusual you're super fortunate but i think ultimately what they
• 57:33
learn from is how you behave that's a giant part
• 57:37
of being a parent that people i don't think are
• 57:40
totally aware of until you start doing it. They understand.
• 57:43
Whatever the fuck you say is one thing. That's great.
• 57:46
What you do is what they really say. And if
• 57:48
you're a lazy fucker who's always making excuses, your kids
• 57:51
are going to not have respect for you. They're going
• 57:53
to know, like, real early on, you're kind of full
• 57:55
  of shit.
• 57:56
Speaker 3: This is the craziest thing, though. You know how hard
• 57:58
it is to put someone out on punishment and then say, hey, Pac,
• 58:02
we're going to Cabo. He's like, yeah. Am I on
• 58:06
punishment if we go into Cabo?
• 58:07
Speaker 1: You don't get your iPad for 16 hours.
• 58:10
Speaker 3: When we get to Cabo, you stay in your room
• 58:13
and overlook the ocean. And think about your consequences as
• 58:20
  you order room service.
• 58:23
Speaker 1: Drinking Coca-Cola, eating French fries.
• 58:26
Speaker 3: Lamb chops coming to the room. He's like, yo, you
• 58:28
on punishment, dude. So I can't have oysters.
• 58:33
Speaker 1: You hear the birds chirping.
• 58:38
Speaker 3: Are you looking at the waves? It's rough. It's a
• 58:44
certain part of success that you almost can't punish because
• 58:51
it's like I'm not staying at home because you don't
• 58:56
punish me. See, my mom, it's just different. It's different.
• 59:01
My mom would go in her room. and turn on
• 59:03
Knotsland and the Dynasty, and I'm in my room with
• 59:06
no TV, because it was only one TV. There's a
• 59:09
TV in every room. The punishment was come in here
• 59:14
and watch Falcon Crest with me. What? I don't want
• 59:18
to watch no Falcon Crest. And then you start watching
• 59:21
Falcon Crest, and now you love it. You're like, so
• 59:24
when is it coming on again? That's why I like M.A.S.H.
• 59:30
You know what I'm saying? I would be in trouble,
• 59:33
and you're watching M.A.S.H. and Bonanza, and then all of
• 59:36
a sudden, you love M.A.S.H. I cried when M.A.S.H. went off.
• 59:41
Speaker 1: Do you remember the dude who dressed up like a
• 59:43
  girl in M.A.S.H.? Jamie Farr?
• 59:45
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 59:45
Speaker 1: He was my neighbor.
• 59:46
Speaker 3: I was your neighbor? Yeah.
• 59:47
Speaker 1: Wow. Back in California. He lived right next door, two
• 59:50
  houses down.
• 59:52
  Speaker 3: Wow. Clinger.
• 59:54
Speaker 1: It used to be just me and him, and then
• 59:56
another guy built a house in between us. It was cool.
• 1:00:00
  Very friendly guy.
• 1:00:02
Speaker 3: Played a good character.
• 1:00:03
Speaker 1: That was a good show.
• 1:00:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, MASH was a very good show. You know, and
• 1:00:07
I said this the other day to a friend of mine.
• 1:00:10
I said, like, I listen, I used to ride and
• 1:00:14
take my kids to school and listen to morning shows.
• 1:00:17
You know, really Tom Joyner. You know, listen to Tom Joyner.
• 1:00:21
And this is something I can listen to with my kids.
• 1:00:24
Now there's no morning shows that I can listen to
• 1:00:29
with my children without them putting in a different element
• 1:00:32
that I'm, I don't want my kids to be a
• 1:00:35
part of, you know, that's a weird thing that they
• 1:00:40
cursing on radio and doing all this.
• 1:00:43
Speaker 1: Well, they can't curse on radio still.
• 1:00:45
Speaker 3: Oh, yes, they can.
• 1:00:47
Speaker 1: Can they, they change it.
• 1:00:48
  Speaker 3: They'll drop a B word in a minute.
• 1:00:50
  Speaker 1: Oh, a B word.
• 1:00:51
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 1:00:52
  Speaker 1: But that's it. You can't, you can't use, you can't
• 1:00:55
  say fuck.
• 1:00:56
  Speaker 7: No.
• 1:00:57
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 1:00:57
Speaker 3: But the rest of it, you know, my, You know,
• 1:01:00
you got daughters. You're in the car. Right, right, right.
• 1:01:02
Speaker 1: And you're hearing some shit. You don't want them to hear.
• 1:01:04
Speaker 3: Like, that's a weird thing. You're like, so they go
• 1:01:07
to school and, you know, and they say, you watching
• 1:01:12
the B? You're like, damn, that was the ending of
• 1:01:16
the show. Right. So now you just, we ride and
• 1:01:21
listen to Keech Cole. You know what I'm saying? With
• 1:01:24
no talk. Oh, I listen to NPR. I listen to Urban...
• 1:01:29
urban network you know for them to listen now they
• 1:01:32
got all these political questions and and you know when
• 1:01:35
you're five-year-old like so why aren't we voting i mean
• 1:01:39
oh it's because you've been listening to karen hannah it's
• 1:01:43
the whole time on the way to school or from
• 1:01:45
school so it's um it's weird how you what shows
• 1:01:50
would you sit down and watch with your kids now
• 1:01:53
You know, they had to watch the shows that I
• 1:01:56
grew up watching. You know, you got to go back.
• 1:01:58
You got to watch Perry Mason and Family Matters and,
• 1:02:02
you know, The Cosby Show, you know, Different World. We
• 1:02:04
had to go back and watch Good Times. You know,
• 1:02:07
we can't watch the current things, you know. So, you know,
• 1:02:13
even with comedy, I took Hassan to a comedy show
• 1:02:20
with me to see some friends. And he was 14
• 1:02:24
at the time and we left because it was no,
• 1:02:30
it was nothing. The things that were being said, it
• 1:02:35
kind of made me go back to when, um, Cosby
• 1:02:39
did the, the story about his son going to see
• 1:02:42
Eddie Murphy and he's daddy said these things. And I
• 1:02:46
was sitting there like the, after the first, Two minutes,
• 1:02:50
I'm like, yo, we got to get out of here.
• 1:02:51
Speaker 1: How old was he at the time?
• 1:02:53
  Speaker 4: 14. 14.
• 1:02:53
Speaker 3: That's too young. And I'm like, yo, man.
• 1:02:56
Speaker 1: But, I mean, the guy who's doing comedy is doing
• 1:02:58
comedy for adults that are drinking in a nightclub, right?
• 1:03:01
Speaker 3: No, we was at an event where it was all
• 1:03:04
these bodybuilders. The gym, Next Level, had did a show
• 1:03:09
for all the people that work out there and the trainers.
• 1:03:14
And I'm thinking, okay, this is at a ballroom. You know,
• 1:03:17
it's probably going to be pretty cool. And I stopped in.
• 1:03:22
You know, we sat in the back. And then it
• 1:03:24
went left. And I was like, hey, man, let's get
• 1:03:28
out of here. And he seen me. And so he's like, no,
• 1:03:33
this ain't the same. I'm like, yeah, I'm not going
• 1:03:37
for a certain type of laugh. I'm not doing shock value.
• 1:03:41
You know, so he's watched almost all the specials. You know, so...
• 1:03:47
it's not the, it's not the, the same for, for him.
• 1:03:51
You know, and he look, he knows a lot of comics.
• 1:03:53
So it's, it's not, this wasn't conducive. I was like, Hasan,
• 1:03:58
we out. We out of here. He's like, but it's
• 1:04:02
some comics you can go and you can watch they,
• 1:04:04
they whole show like a Marcus D. Wiley. He can
• 1:04:07
get an understanding of at least marriage, you know, how,
• 1:04:10
how marriage go to give you some, some fuel. But
• 1:04:14
I think the, the landscape of, of, Comedy is different
• 1:04:17
for different people. Not knocking the people who do shock
• 1:04:20
value or a lot of sexual content. That's their stick.
• 1:04:26
And they're probably young. And at some point they'll grow.
• 1:04:29
Hopefully they'll grow. And it'll be more things in life
• 1:04:33
to talk about. People are like, well, how do you
• 1:04:36
have this many specials? Because I have a life. I
• 1:04:42
had a life before that I talked about. And then
• 1:04:44
I have a life, a current life. that you know
• 1:04:47
I'm still experiencing things so I'm going to talk about
• 1:04:51
things that that's a little different because I'm living and
• 1:04:56
I'm not stuck in sex is not the number one
• 1:04:59
thing I remember when I figured that I was sex
• 1:05:03
wasn't that big when I went to you know they
• 1:05:06
had the thing Netflix and chill and I actually wanted
• 1:05:10
to watch the movie get your hand off my leg
• 1:05:15
I'm trying to watch this movie You know what I'm saying?
• 1:05:18
That's funny. So it's a thing about the development in
• 1:05:22
this game of how you grow and what you think about.
• 1:05:24
Speaker 1: Well, I think comedy is just one of the problems
• 1:05:27
with the label is that there's no genres. It's not
• 1:05:31
like blues comedy, rock and roll comedy, hip-hop comedy, EDM comedy.
• 1:05:36
It's just comedy. You don't know what it is. It's
• 1:05:39
just different people's perspective on things. And there's different kinds
• 1:05:43
of comedy that people like. You know, some people are
• 1:05:45
giant Richard Pryor fans. Some people are Sam Kinison fans.
• 1:05:48
Some people are Jerry Seinfeld fans. And some people love
• 1:05:51
Bonnie Raitt. And some people love, you know, whatever. James Brown.
• 1:05:56
Fill in the blank. There's a lot of different styles
• 1:05:58
of music. And there's a lot of different styles of comedy.
• 1:06:02
And all that I care is that you enjoy what
• 1:06:05
you're doing. And you're doing it because you enjoy it.
• 1:06:08
And if you're doing that, I don't give a fuck.
• 1:06:10
  I don't give a fuck what you're doing. I don't
• 1:06:12
care if you have props. I don't care if you
• 1:06:13
write signs and hold them up for the crowd. I
• 1:06:15
  don't give a shit what you're doing. I don't care
• 1:06:17
if you do impressions. I don't give a fuck what
• 1:06:19
  you're doing.
• 1:06:20
Speaker 3: That was a huge.
• 1:06:24
So when you talk about the scope of comedy, I
• 1:06:28
can start with Carol Burnett, and I watched that, but
• 1:06:31
the guy who I watched on HBO a lot, I
• 1:06:35
knew I wasn't going to do that type of stand-up.
• 1:06:38
That was just a whole different thing, but Gallagher. It
• 1:06:41
  was crazy to me.
• 1:06:43
  Speaker 1: Crazy.
• 1:06:43
Speaker 3: That was the craziest.
• 1:06:45
Speaker 1: Everybody wore plastic. They had garbage bags around their necks.
• 1:06:48
Speaker 3: Like the front, what, six rows? Yeah, just getting.
• 1:06:50
Speaker 1: Splattered with watermelons and pineapples and coconuts and whatever the
• 1:06:53
  fuck he was, cabbage. Ridiculous.
• 1:06:57
  Speaker 3: Ridiculous.
• 1:06:57
Speaker 1: But he also had some good jokes.
• 1:06:59
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:06:59
Speaker 1: Some solid jokes in between then. Dude did a ton
• 1:07:02
  of specials.
• 1:07:03
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:07:03
Speaker 1: You know the craziest story, the Gallagher story? Is Gallagher
• 1:07:07
retired and his brother took over. His brother was Gallagher 2.
• 1:07:12
So he had a brother that kind of looked like Gallagher.
• 1:07:14
  Speaker 3: I remember that.
• 1:07:15
  Speaker 1: Right?
• 1:07:15
  Speaker 3: I remember Gallagher 2.
• 1:07:17
Speaker 1: And then somewhere down the line, Gallagher decided he wants
• 1:07:20
to start doing comedy again. And he's like, hey, Gallagher 2,
• 1:07:24
the gig is up. And he's like, no, no, no, no, no.
• 1:07:28
I'm making money. I'm Gallagher 2. I think there was
• 1:07:33
some sort of a legal dispute. Find out if that's correct.
• 1:07:36
There was a legal dispute between them. Gallagher's younger brother, Ron,
• 1:07:40
who shared a strong likeness to Leo, asked him for
• 1:07:42
permission to perform shows using Gallagher's trademark Sledge-O-Matic routine. Leo
• 1:07:47
granted his permission on the condition that Ron and his
• 1:07:50
manager clarified in promotional materials that this was Ron Gallagher,
• 1:07:54
not Leo Gallagher, who was performing. Ron typically performed in
• 1:07:59
venues smaller than those in which Leo Gallagher performed. After
• 1:08:02
several years, Ron began promoting his act as Gallagher 2
• 1:08:05
or Gallagher TOO or TWO. In some instances, Ron's act
• 1:08:09
was promoted in a way that left unclear the fact
• 1:08:12
that he was not the original Gallagher. Leo initially responded
• 1:08:16
by requesting only that his brother not use the sledge-o-matic routine.
• 1:08:19
You can't use the fucking, you can't use the sledgehammer.
• 1:08:23
Ron nonetheless continued to tour as Gallagher 2 using the routine.
• 1:08:28
In August 2000, Leo sued his brother for trademark violations
• 1:08:32
and false advertising. The court ultimately sided with Leo and
• 1:08:36
granted an injunction prohibiting Ron from performing any act that
• 1:08:39
impersonated his brother in small clubs and venues. This injunction
• 1:08:44
also prohibited Ron from intentionally bearing likeness to Leo.
• 1:08:48
  Speaker 3: What?
• 1:08:49
Speaker 1: Imagine you can't look like your brother.
• 1:08:51
Speaker 3: You can't. Cut your mustache.
• 1:08:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta change your mustache. You gotta get rid
• 1:08:56
of the beard. That's crazy. So did um did Gallagher
• 1:08:59
continue with his career after he kicked his brother out
• 1:09:03
did he come back probably was that part of it.
• 1:09:09
  Speaker 4: Yeah I think I don't know.
• 1:09:10
Speaker 1: No but I mean does it say it there didn't
• 1:09:12
say it here it doesn't say.
• 1:09:13
Speaker 4: Not specifically in this paragraph no.
• 1:09:15
Speaker 1: Does it did when did Gallagher start performing again put
• 1:09:19
that in a search See what it says. Because I
• 1:09:21
think he did start performing again.
• 1:09:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, he says he was rushed to the hospital after
• 1:09:27
  a performance in 2011. Oh.
• 1:09:29
  Speaker 3: So.
• 1:09:30
Speaker 1: Okay. And what year did he sue his brother?
• 1:09:32
  Speaker 3: 2000.
• 1:09:33
Speaker 1: Oh, so he did start doing comedy again. So that's it. Yeah.
• 1:09:38
  So he's like, hey, motherfucker.
• 1:09:40
Speaker 5: Yeah, he had a special in 2007 and 2014.
• 1:09:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't be doing that with Gallagher 2 running
• 1:09:45
around siphoning off of your crowd. You know, people are like, honey,
• 1:09:49
you want to spend 50 bucks and see Leo? Or
• 1:09:54
do you want to spend 20 bucks and see basically
• 1:09:57
  the same shit?
• 1:09:57
  Speaker 3: And see Ron.
• 1:09:58
Speaker 1: See Ron smashing fucking cabbage.
• 1:10:03
Speaker 3: Then you had Carrot Top.
• 1:10:06
Speaker 1: And imagine saying, yeah, you can perform, but you can't
• 1:10:08
  use a sledgehammer.
• 1:10:09
Speaker 3: I would use a mallet. What about a mallet? Can
• 1:10:13
  I use a mallet?
• 1:10:14
Speaker 1: Can I use a baseball bat? Can I just have
• 1:10:17
someone pitch me things and I smash them into the crowd?
• 1:10:20
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:10:21
Speaker 1: You can't own that.
• 1:10:22
Speaker 3: That's a different thing. I'm handing out oranges and tomatoes
• 1:10:26
  in the audience.
• 1:10:27
  Speaker 1: Yeah. I honestly, I don't give a fuck what you
• 1:10:29
do as long as you like what you're doing. It's
• 1:10:31
like I love certain kinds of music that's completely opposite
• 1:10:36
to other shit that I love. I mean, I like
• 1:10:38
all kinds of stuff. I don't think you should pigeonhole
• 1:10:41
  yourself with anything.
• 1:10:42
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 1:10:43
Speaker 1: But I would not take my kids, especially when they're
• 1:10:46
really young, to see someone who's like very sexual or
• 1:10:49
  really rowdy or really raunchy.
• 1:10:52
Speaker 3: You know, the caveat to this is he was in
• 1:10:55
the green room and they were looking right at him.
• 1:10:57
And I'm like, tell me. I didn't know they act.
• 1:11:04
Speaker 1: Oh, so he didn't say, hey, bro, you got young kids?
• 1:11:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, hey, man. Because I would say, hey, man, tonight,
• 1:11:10
  you know.
• 1:11:11
Speaker 1: Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 1:11:13
Speaker 3: Set an event, bro.
• 1:11:14
Speaker 1: Oh, I would definitely do that, especially if you were
• 1:11:17
another comic and you brought your kids out.
• 1:11:19
Speaker 3: Bro. Yeah, because Juan Villarreal used to bring his kids.
• 1:11:23
  Seven minutes on dick sucking.
• 1:11:24
  Speaker 1: We got.
• 1:11:27
  Speaker 4: It.
• 1:11:27
Speaker 3: Like, yo, you got to get him out of here.
• 1:11:30
Speaker 1: They don't need to know about all these techniques.
• 1:11:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's weird.
• 1:11:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, that is weird, but you know what I mean?
• 1:11:36
It's like time and a place. Like, who is he
• 1:11:37
doing it for? I mean, they probably knew what he
• 1:11:40
did before they hired him. They probably wanted that. Someone's
• 1:11:42
a fan, which is fine, but just don't invite kids.
• 1:11:45
Speaker 3: And like I said, all I did was, hey, Hasan,
• 1:11:50
  let's go. And that's it. I didn't, hey, y'all should
• 1:11:53
have been. I'm like, man, do what you do, but
• 1:11:55
I'm getting my kid out of here. And then you
• 1:11:57
get the phone call. Hey, man, why you leave? really
• 1:12:01
want to know why I'm leaving because you are terrorizing
• 1:12:05
my child so yeah you know but I definitely wouldn't
• 1:12:10
take my girls to like I'm like.
• 1:12:13
Speaker 6: They don't need to see that they don't need to
• 1:12:15
see that really not at all my wife got mad
• 1:12:17
at me when I think one of my daughters was
• 1:12:20
six the other one was eight I had them watch
• 1:12:23
the movie Alien you ever see that movie Alien the
• 1:12:26
original movie yeah fucking terrifying and I was like this
• 1:12:29
is too young This is too young.
• 1:12:32
  Speaker 1: I fucked up.
• 1:12:35
Speaker 3: You know, I think Hassan watched Annabelle when he was young.
• 1:12:42
  Speaker 1: Oh, Annabelle's creepy.
• 1:12:45
Speaker 3: He was traumatized. He watched it at somebody else's house
• 1:12:49
with some other kids. And they were like, I guess
• 1:12:52
they understood. But Hassan was, it was a whole problem.
• 1:12:57
You talking about sleeping with all the lights on in
• 1:12:59
the house? Like, I want all the lights on and
• 1:13:01
  I'm sleeping in your bed.
• 1:13:04
Speaker 1: Do you ever go to that place in Vegas? It's
• 1:13:08
Haunted Museum. He has the Annabelle doll there.
• 1:13:13
Speaker 3: Wow. Yeah. There it is.
• 1:13:17
Speaker 1: Which one is the one on the right? Oh, hell no.
• 1:13:20
  That's the real one?
• 1:13:20
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 1:13:21
Speaker 1: It's the one on the left, the movie one?
• 1:13:22
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 1:13:23
  Speaker 1: Oh, really?
• 1:13:24
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 1:13:24
  Speaker 1: Interesting.
• 1:13:25
Speaker 3: Wow. So that Annabelle is... Both of them creepy as
• 1:13:29
  hell to me.
• 1:13:30
Speaker 1: Well, there's something kind of extra creepy about the one
• 1:13:33
with eyes like a person, the left one.
• 1:13:35
  Speaker 3: That's insane.
• 1:13:37
Speaker 1: You believe in ghosts?
• 1:13:39
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 1:13:40
  Speaker 4: Really?
• 1:13:42
Speaker 1: Have you had experience?
• 1:13:46
Speaker 3: No. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I have. Let
• 1:13:49
me go back. Let me say that. I do believe
• 1:13:52
in ghosts. So my old house, well, my mom says
• 1:13:55
that now, there's a girl that lives there. You know,
• 1:13:59
I don't know what happened at this house, but it's
• 1:14:00
definitely a girl that lives in the house. But she
• 1:14:04
would only come from, like, the hallway bathroom to the kitchen.
• 1:14:09
And I remember during the pandemic.
• 1:14:11
Speaker 1: Wait a minute. You say a girl. You mean a ghost.
• 1:14:13
  Speaker 3: Yeah. That's a girl.
• 1:14:15
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 1:14:16
Speaker 3: She's definitely a girl. And I remember during the pandemic,
• 1:14:21
I was in the den, and I was working on something.
• 1:14:27
And literally... I just turned and said, so you up, huh?
• 1:14:33
Because I could feel her. And I had to go
• 1:14:36
back through my family. A lot of people in my
• 1:14:38
family have experiences with past relatives that passed on. My
• 1:14:42
uncle said he saw his dad, which was my grandfather,
• 1:14:46
in his shoes. And my mom said she saw my
• 1:14:50
grandfather before that died in the house that they had
• 1:14:55
in Mississippi. But yeah, I believe in ghosts. I believe
• 1:14:58
in unsettled spirits. But you definitely had a girl that
• 1:15:03
  lived in that house.
• 1:15:04
Speaker 1: My grandmother, the one I was telling you about before,
• 1:15:06
she was very interesting. And she really strongly believed in ghosts.
• 1:15:10
And there was a guy that stayed with them for
• 1:15:12
a while. They had like an upstairs area that they
• 1:15:15
weren't using once the kids left. And so they rented
• 1:15:18
out like it was like an attic space that they
• 1:15:20
had converted. I forget exactly what it was. Anyway, they
• 1:15:23
rented out a room to this guy. wherever the circumstances were,
• 1:15:27
and he died. And my grandmother swore that that dude
• 1:15:31
  stayed in the house.
• 1:15:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, I believe it.
• 1:15:34
Speaker 1: I think it's possible that if something happens to you,
• 1:15:40
that if you're dying, it's a very traumatic experience. And
• 1:15:43
I have a feeling that we don't totally understand memory.
• 1:15:48
And we assume that memory is something that only human
• 1:15:51
beings have. Or that only animals have. Or that only
• 1:15:54
creatures have. Living creatures have. I don't think that's real.
• 1:15:57
I have a feeling there may be a type of
• 1:16:00
memory from particularly traumatic experiences that stays in a space.
• 1:16:05
And I think this is one of the reasons why
• 1:16:07
they have to disclose within a certain amount of time
• 1:16:10
someone's been murdered in a house in a lot of
• 1:16:11
places before you buy it. Because people don't want to
• 1:16:14
live in a house that's got that energy in it.
• 1:16:17
Because I think things keep energy. I think they do.
• 1:16:20
I think there's something more to memory than just as
• 1:16:25
simple as, Oh, remember when we were five? I think
• 1:16:28
there's something else there. I think, I think that's our memory,
• 1:16:31
but I think there's a type of memory in things.
• 1:16:34
  That's what I think.
• 1:16:35
Speaker 3: I believe in the unseen world. So I believe in genes,
• 1:16:39
you know, I believe in angels. So it's an unseen world.
• 1:16:43
That's not, you know, our thing, but, That was things
• 1:16:49
  here before us.
• 1:16:51
Speaker 1: I think there's things here with us.
• 1:16:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely with us.
• 1:16:53
Speaker 1: And people who don't think that haven't smoked DMT.
• 1:16:56
Speaker 3: But I definitely believe in gin.
• 1:17:00
Speaker 1: Get a hold of some DMT and you're like, okay,
• 1:17:03
I don't know shit. There's things around me all the time.
• 1:17:07
There's things that are influencing you all the time. And
• 1:17:10
this is like when we talk about good energy and
• 1:17:12
bad energy. One of the things you experience in psychedelic
• 1:17:15
states is a clear recognition of like good things that
• 1:17:18
you've done and bad things you've done. The good way
• 1:17:21
of thinking, the good way you think about things, a
• 1:17:24
positive way and bad. I remember having negative thoughts in
• 1:17:28
an experience once and it was all these like dark fractals.
• 1:17:31
And then I realized it was trying to show me
• 1:17:34
that these dark fractals, these crazy geometric, these like scary
• 1:17:37
patterns that I was seeing was because of my own thoughts.
• 1:17:40
And then I released them and it turned into beautiful
• 1:17:43
geometric patterns over and over. And it kept saying, like,
• 1:17:46
look at this and look at this. And I was like, oh,
• 1:17:51
it's actually the way you think changes the world around you.
• 1:17:55
It has an effect. It might not have the ultimate effect.
• 1:17:58
It might not be 100% of what happens to you
• 1:18:01
and in your life. But it has a meaningful effect.
• 1:18:04
We just can't measure it. And there's things that are
• 1:18:07
out there, whatever they are. They have some kind of
• 1:18:10
consciousness that are around us all the time. We just
• 1:18:13
don't have the senses to take them in. Just like
• 1:18:16
when you wave your hand over an earthworm and it
• 1:18:18
has no fucking idea you're doing that. We don't have
• 1:18:20
the senses to understand that there's things around us. And
• 1:18:23
people have been writing about these things for so long
• 1:18:27
to discount them all. They're all liars. They're all delusional.
• 1:18:31
  They're all crazy.
• 1:18:33
Speaker 3: I think that people discount them due to thinking that
• 1:18:37
  they were on drugs.
• 1:18:38
Speaker 1: Well, they probably were. But it doesn't.
• 1:18:40
Speaker 3: Mean they're wrong. It doesn't mean they're wrong. You know,
• 1:18:44
like a drunk really don't tell a lot of lies.
• 1:18:48
  Speaker 1: That's a drunk.
• 1:18:52
  Speaker 3: A drunk don't tell a lot of lies. I'm drunk.
• 1:18:54
I can't remember all that. I'm just saying what it is. Right.
• 1:18:58
But when you, when people like LSD, you know, halluciners,
• 1:19:05
you know, or mushrooms or These things, people are like, well,
• 1:19:09
you only saw that because you was on this. But
• 1:19:11
maybe that's the portal on how you see certain things.
• 1:19:15
Speaker 1: I think there's certain things that we block ourselves from
• 1:19:18
being able to see. By our own protective instincts, we
• 1:19:23
protect our thoughts. I mean, this is why people, I think,
• 1:19:25
get paranoid when they smoke weed. One of the things
• 1:19:28
that weed does is it dissolves all these artificial barriers
• 1:19:31
that you've put between you and the thoughts of real danger.
• 1:19:34
They're all there. You realize your vulnerability. You realize... who
• 1:19:38
  you are.
• 1:19:39
Speaker 3: So just think of how years ago how weed was viewed,
• 1:19:43
how marijuana was viewed. It was taught that marijuana is
• 1:19:49
a gateway drug to crack. I didn't believe that. How
• 1:19:54
did that even correlate? But it's for those who are
• 1:19:58
trying to find an ultimate high. Maybe you just smoke
• 1:20:02
weed and that's all you ever did. And you wasn't
• 1:20:06
trying to find another high. I think some people try
• 1:20:10
to find another high, like now, man, a lot of
• 1:20:14
these young people are on so many different things at
• 1:20:18
the same time. Like, what are you searching for? You know,
• 1:20:22
they popping pills, doing Coke, drinking lean, doing everything all
• 1:20:27
at the same time. Like what is, and drinking, like what, what,
• 1:20:31
what are you trying to escape or what are you
• 1:20:33
searching for? You know, and I just know people who
• 1:20:35
just smoke weed and still smoke joints. They don't smoke the,
• 1:20:40
I know people who grow their own, but they not
• 1:20:42
even trusting what's going on now. Now they finding fentanyl
• 1:20:46
and all this marijuana, you know.
• 1:20:48
Speaker 1: And pesticides, pesticides, horrible pesticides. Cause what people don't know
• 1:20:54
is that a giant percentage of all the drugs or
• 1:20:57
marijuana rather that people are buying in places where it's
• 1:21:00
illegal is They're growing them in national forests in California
• 1:21:05
and the cartel is doing it. And the cartel uses
• 1:21:08
a bunch of pesticides and herbicides that are illegal, like
• 1:21:12
real toxic shit. And they find them doing it all
• 1:21:14
the time. They find these grow ops in the forest
• 1:21:17
all the time because it's a misdemeanor. So because marijuana
• 1:21:21
is legal in the state of California, growing it is
• 1:21:23
just a misdemeanor. So you can have a full scale
• 1:21:25
grow op in public land out in the forest. And
• 1:21:30
these guys find them there all the time. A friend
• 1:21:32
of mine found one in a ranch that he works at.
• 1:21:36
He followed these PVC pipes and he realized that some
• 1:21:40
guy was diverting water into this little area that was
• 1:21:43
on Tahone Ranch, which is a big ranch outside of Bakersfield.
• 1:21:48
But this dude that was on my podcast before, his
• 1:21:50
name is John Norris. He wrote a book about it.
• 1:21:52
He was a game warden and he had it turned
• 1:21:54
into a tactical unit. They had to get like dogs,
• 1:21:57
like Belgian Malmois and shit with bulletproof vests. And they're
• 1:22:01
going in there having shootouts with the cartel because the
• 1:22:03
cartel had set up these marijuana grow ops in the woods.
• 1:22:06
And it was his job to police that area. It's like, OK,
• 1:22:09
I guess that's what we're doing now. And then it's
• 1:22:12
  a crazy.
• 1:22:12
Speaker 3: Story, man. Sound like moonshine. That's why you do moonshine. Exactly.
• 1:22:17
And this thing moonshine moonshining developed into NASCAR. Exactly.
• 1:22:25
Speaker 1: Exactly. They had to outrun the cops. Yeah, that's what
• 1:22:29
NASCAR came about from. It's fun. I mean, listen, also,
• 1:22:33
it's Al Capone. You know, it's all the mob. They
• 1:22:36
were all running alcohol. And there was a lot of
• 1:22:39
people that were connected to them. You know, some people
• 1:22:41
believe that JFK's dad was involved in alcohol, but that's disputed.
• 1:22:46
But the point is, like, a lot of people were
• 1:22:48
making money selling alcohol, and they were all criminals, all
• 1:22:51
of them. And so what are you doing? Are you
• 1:22:53
  stopping people from getting marijuana?
• 1:22:55
  Speaker 4: Nope.
• 1:22:56
Speaker 1: What you're doing is you're empowering a criminal empire. And
• 1:22:59
you're giving them an immense amount of money. And they're
• 1:23:02
probably going to have to kill a few people because
• 1:23:04
people get in the way. They're probably going to have
• 1:23:06
to rob a few people because people are competition. There's
• 1:23:09
a little bit of a problem over here. We got
• 1:23:10
  another guy growing.
• 1:23:12
Speaker 3: We live in a society where the bad guy is
• 1:23:17
  definitely romanticized.
• 1:23:20
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 1:23:20
Speaker 3: So how do you stop people from wanting to be
• 1:23:24
the bad guy when It's so romanticized in everything.
• 1:23:29
Speaker 1: It's romanticized to the point where John Wick is a
• 1:23:31
  good guy.
• 1:23:34
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:23:34
Speaker 1: John Wick is a contract killer for the Russian mob.
• 1:23:38
He kills who knows how many fucking people, and he's
• 1:23:41
  the good guy.
• 1:23:42
Speaker 3: But you got a problem with the Iceman. Right. The
• 1:23:47
Iceman was a terrible person. Right.
• 1:23:50
Speaker 1: He did it with poison. John Wick at least looks
• 1:23:52
  sexy in that suit.
• 1:23:53
Speaker 3: But you cannot wait for John Wick 6 to come out.
• 1:23:56
Speaker 1: I can't wait. I love those– well, the John Wick
• 1:23:59
movie though, he had a reason. They killed his dog
• 1:24:02
and they stole his car. They fucked up. They fucked up.
• 1:24:06
They stole the wrong guy's car and they killed the
• 1:24:07
wrong guy's puppy. And so you're rooting for him. You're
• 1:24:10
rooting for him to kill all these bad Russian guys.
• 1:24:11
But you don't realize like that guy has been a
• 1:24:13
contract killer for the Russian mob for who knows how–
• 1:24:15
how many dads has he assassinated? How many fucking people
• 1:24:18
that have families that will never come home to them
• 1:24:20
  because of John Wick?
• 1:24:22
Speaker 3: Yep. And sometimes, a lot of times, people don't care.
• 1:24:26
  We don't care. That's weird.
• 1:24:27
  Speaker 1: Well, we're weird. We're a weird animal. We're a weird
• 1:24:30
animal in a constant flux of thoughts. And we're trying
• 1:24:34
to figure out what's the right way to think and
• 1:24:35
the wrong way to think. And people join religions for it.
• 1:24:38
They'll join cults for it. They'll join political movements for it.
• 1:24:42
They just want to find a way to think that
• 1:24:44
makes them feel better than the way they think right now.
• 1:24:47
Speaker 3: You know, with the need to feel better outside of yourself,
• 1:24:55
you know, or your family, you know, or being, you know,
• 1:25:05
great to society. I think that's detrimental to this society
• 1:25:12
where I personally need to feel better, but I don't
• 1:25:16
want the community around me to feel better. And in
• 1:25:20
my mind, if everybody around you in the community feels better,
• 1:25:26
I think it makes for a more harmonious, you know,
• 1:25:30
environment than me just being the only one.
• 1:25:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's because you're a wise person. The problem
• 1:25:36
is there's a lot of people that aren't wise and
• 1:25:38
there's no one wise around them. And that's, that's the
• 1:25:41
real issue is that there's an extreme lack of like a, a,
• 1:25:47
a good direction book on how to lead a solid life.
• 1:25:51
You're not taught at school. At school, you're taught to
• 1:25:53
sit down and learn some shit that you don't give
• 1:25:55
a fuck about learning. Memorize this. Do good on the test.
• 1:25:58
You got to get a job. What's a job? Well,
• 1:26:00
you got to sit there and do some shit you
• 1:26:01
don't want to do to get some money. And with
• 1:26:03
the rest of your time, you can do whatever you
• 1:26:04
want as long as you keep showing up every morning
• 1:26:06
  at the same spot.
• 1:26:07
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 1:26:08
Speaker 1: And then that sucks. And so what do you want
• 1:26:10
to do? I want to escape this suck. So what
• 1:26:12
  do I need? Cold syrup?
• 1:26:14
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 1:26:14
Speaker 1: Give me some of that. What do I need? Weed?
• 1:26:16
  Give me some of that.
• 1:26:17
  Speaker 3: Adderall?
• 1:26:17
Speaker 1: Ooh, Adderall makes me like the job. Okay. I'll take
• 1:26:20
this shit every day. Now I don't give a fuck.
• 1:26:22
Now I'm trying to get ahead. Next thing you know,
• 1:26:24
I'm moving up the corporate ladder, and I'm a fucking animal, bro,
• 1:26:26
because I'm on Adderall. You're basically on meth. You're on
• 1:26:31
a well-designed, slow-drip amphetamine, and you're out there fucking sleeping
• 1:26:37
four hours a day, getting shit done, you know, driving
• 1:26:40
a Jaguar. What the fuck? And this is the problem
• 1:26:45
with our society. People don't have a real– there's a
• 1:26:49
lot of people out there that don't really have a purpose.
• 1:26:51
They don't have a real feeling of purpose in their life.
• 1:26:54
You are very fortunate because you found a thing that
• 1:26:56
you're really good at, that you love to do, and
• 1:26:59
you make a great living doing it. A lot of
• 1:27:01
people don't have a thing and they never were taught
• 1:27:05
to pursue a thing or they never saw anybody else
• 1:27:07
do it and they realized they could do it too.
• 1:27:10
And then next thing you know, they're married and they
• 1:27:12
have kids and they're in their 30s and then they're
• 1:27:14
in their 40s and they feel like shit.
• 1:27:16
Speaker 3: I'll ask you a question. You have a team, correct?
• 1:27:21
  Team of people.
• 1:27:21
Speaker 1: In terms of what?
• 1:27:22
  Speaker 3: Team of people.
• 1:27:23
  Speaker 1: Sure.
• 1:27:23
Speaker 3: Okay. Do you think your team is happy doing whatever
• 1:27:31
  they do for the team?
• 1:27:34
Speaker 1: If I didn't think that, they wouldn't be working.
• 1:27:36
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 1:27:37
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 1:27:37
Speaker 3: So you don't want to be the only one happy
• 1:27:40
  on the team.
• 1:27:41
Speaker 1: No, that's terrible. So, and you don't want to also
• 1:27:44
have someone on the team that is one of those
• 1:27:46
people that just was never happy. That's a problem too.
• 1:27:49
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:27:49
Speaker 1: That's a problem too. So there's people out there you
• 1:27:52
  can't fix.
• 1:27:53
Speaker 3: So with like, I produce other people's specials now and
• 1:28:00
comics that hit me. Hey man, I want you to
• 1:28:02
just do my special. I want you to do this
• 1:28:03
for my special. And the hardest thing, Because I'm a
• 1:28:08
small company. The hardest thing is when I have to
• 1:28:14
explain to somebody why it's a no, you know, on
• 1:28:18
this particular special. And it's not just my no. It
• 1:28:24
is for other people's no because I tell people and
• 1:28:28
I explain this. If we're doing a special with you,
• 1:28:33
you have to get the approval of all five of
• 1:28:38
us because we all five do different things. And I
• 1:28:42
want everybody who's involved in your special to want to
• 1:28:46
do it, not they have to do it because it's
• 1:28:50
a part of the company. No, I want them to
• 1:28:52
want to do it. And I say, I'm not putting
• 1:28:54
you through a process that I'm not putting myself through.
• 1:28:58
And I've tested this team with me giving them a
• 1:29:05
special that I knew that wasn't special. And I'm the head.
• 1:29:11
I'm like, I sent it out, and then we brought
• 1:29:15
it back to the table, and it was a lot
• 1:29:17
of silence at first. I'm like, so what are we thinking?
• 1:29:20
And they was like, I don't know. I think this
• 1:29:24
is horrible. I'm like, And I'm just listening to everybody's,
• 1:29:28
you know, opinion on it. And they was like, I
• 1:29:31
don't understand the direction. I don't understand where you're going
• 1:29:33
with this. I just, you know, we're going to have
• 1:29:34
to fix a lot of it. I'm like, and I'm
• 1:29:36
just sitting there listening. And we took the vote. And
• 1:29:41
when we turned the vote in, it was five no's.
• 1:29:45
And it was like, so what was your take on it?
• 1:29:48
I said, I knew it was a no from the beginning.
• 1:29:50
I just wanted to make sure that y'all wasn't going
• 1:29:53
to try to fluff me Because he's the head, we're
• 1:29:56
going to say yes. And I'm like, good. So anytime
• 1:30:00
we do a project, I put it on the table
• 1:30:04
just like I put anybody else's project on the table.
• 1:30:06
And you got to get all five people. If you
• 1:30:09
want me to finance, you got to get me. Then
• 1:30:12
you got to get the marketing person that's going to market.
• 1:30:14
Then you got to get the director. You got to
• 1:30:16
get the manager. You got to get everybody so they
• 1:30:20
can feel good about pushing your project. I don't want
• 1:30:23
anybody pushing a project that they don't like.
• 1:30:25
Speaker 1: That's very smart. Yeah, so you make it a democracy. Smart.
• 1:30:30
Speaker 3: So you got all five of us, then now we ready.
• 1:30:33
You know what I'm saying? And now I'm going to
• 1:30:35
feel good about somebody coming to me and saying, this
• 1:30:38
  is going to cost this.
• 1:30:39
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 1:30:39
Speaker 3: Because I know they're doing it out of, hey, man,
• 1:30:42
this is what it's going to cost. We're going to
• 1:30:43
figure it out. And I'm like, cool. But even when
• 1:30:47
I do a special, man, it is a lot of.
• 1:30:53
You don't want to talk about this part. Like, no,
• 1:30:56
like we should talk about this part. And, and it's
• 1:31:00
been some decisions that have been made. That was, it
• 1:31:03
was my call at the end, but it was somebody
• 1:31:06
else's idea. Like with domino effect, it would have never
• 1:31:10
been a domino effect two, three or four. If I
• 1:31:13
would have stuck with the name that I started with,
• 1:31:16
the name was 1983. so how what it was gonna
• 1:31:20
  be 83 86 it's like it's like and I've rugged
• 1:31:28
um which won uh what three webby awards rugged was
• 1:31:33
was the original name was I'm not handy and Eric
• 1:31:37
called me was like no we were I've listened to
• 1:31:43
it I watched it so many times I think that
• 1:31:44
we should go with this name and he He gave
• 1:31:47
me the name, and I sat on it for a day,
• 1:31:49
and then I called him back. I'm like, yeah, you
• 1:31:51
  about right.
• 1:31:52
Speaker 1: Well, that's good. That means you got good people.
• 1:31:55
Speaker 3: And I think that people should put, like right now
• 1:31:58
I'm on the Custom Fit Tour. Well, I'm off until
• 1:32:02
August because I'm going to take six weeks of vacation.
• 1:32:06
But Custom Fit is not going to be a special.
• 1:32:13
It's just the tour that I'm doing now, because the
• 1:32:16
specials that I'm writing are different than what I, I
• 1:32:20
just wanted to take this time to just do some material.
• 1:32:24
I didn't want to have a theme, be working on
• 1:32:26
the special, but the theme is about people think custom
• 1:32:30
fit is about clothes. It's not about clothes. It's about
• 1:32:33
tailor making the people around you. I'm saying that can,
• 1:32:36
you can be a benefit to, it can be a
• 1:32:38
benefit to you. I'm saying not just having these people around.
• 1:32:43
Cause you know, sometimes people have a bunch of people
• 1:32:45
around that, secretly despise them, you know, and secretly despise
• 1:32:51
their success. And that's, uh, that's detrimental to anything.
• 1:32:57
  Speaker 1: Haters.
• 1:32:58
  Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
• 1:32:59
Speaker 1: Sometimes haters will get real close to you. Stay, stay
• 1:33:01
next to you. It's a problem. I mean, when you're
• 1:33:04
in a position like you're in too, when you're producing
• 1:33:06
other people's specials, you're going to get a bunch of
• 1:33:08
people to come to you that you don't want to
• 1:33:09
do their shit. It's just like owning the club, the
• 1:33:12
same issue. The way I bypass that, I, put all
• 1:33:15
the power into adam adam eget decides who's there and
• 1:33:19
who's not there and how the the club gets scheduled
• 1:33:22
and you know who passes and who doesn't and he's
• 1:33:27
really good at it you know he's really good at
• 1:33:28
it i trust him implicitly so i don't have to
• 1:33:31
think about it and i like it so that when
• 1:33:33
people say i want to work your club i'm like
• 1:33:34
well you got to talk to adam i just perform
• 1:33:37
i might be the owner but i just perform there
• 1:33:39
i don't i don't think about it in terms of
• 1:33:41
like how the scheduling is. I often have to check
• 1:33:44
the website to see who's there. I don't know who's there.
• 1:33:48
It might be mine, but I got a guy who
• 1:33:50
does it, and he does it really well. So why
• 1:33:52
would I get involved in that? It's easier to not.
• 1:33:57
  Speaker 3: When I had a club in Houston, I couldn't be
• 1:34:00
funny in the club at all. Why not? Because I
• 1:34:04
was actively working the club. So I'm on stage, and
• 1:34:10
I'm worried about Oh, I see. So many other things
• 1:34:14
going on. Like, yo, did you just drop a glass
• 1:34:17
on the ground? I didn't have enough help.
• 1:34:22
Speaker 1: You got to get the right help. I got very
• 1:34:25
fortunate in that a lot of the people that I
• 1:34:27
took to Austin, they were from the comedy store, and
• 1:34:30
they were out of work. So the comedy store closed
• 1:34:33
because of the fucking stupid government of L.A. They wouldn't
• 1:34:36
even allow them to do outside shows. You couldn't do
• 1:34:39
an outside show in the parking lot of the Comedy Store.
• 1:34:42
They wouldn't allow it. It's so stupid. They were closed
• 1:34:44
for like a good solid year and a half. They
• 1:34:46
couldn't support paying all these people. So they had to
• 1:34:49
get rid of them. And I moved here. And it's
• 1:34:52
the same time. It just by chance. It happened at
• 1:34:54
the same time. And so they were all out of work.
• 1:34:57
And I said, hey, let's get the band back together again.
• 1:34:59
  Speaker 3: Do you guys.
• 1:35:01
Speaker 1: Want to move to Austin? So I paid for everybody
• 1:35:03
to come out here. And I paid for them. I
• 1:35:05
gave them a full salary with everything for like. A
• 1:35:08
year and a half or so, maybe even more, maybe
• 1:35:11
two years before anybody had to go to work because
• 1:35:15
the club wasn't open. So I was like, I want
• 1:35:18
to give you a job like so you could settle in,
• 1:35:20
get used to Austin. You're going to get paid like
• 1:35:23
you get paid, like you're working, but you don't have
• 1:35:25
to work. But I love you. I know you. And,
• 1:35:29
  you know. Come here.
• 1:35:31
Speaker 3: Very admirable. With the store, I just performed at the
• 1:35:35
store main room for TDE. They had a thing before
• 1:35:41
BET World, so I popped in. And the comedy store
• 1:35:47
has a certain politics to it that, you know, I
• 1:35:51
like the other one a little more, you know, all
• 1:35:54
  they serve is pop.
• 1:35:54
  Speaker 1: The improv?
• 1:35:55
Speaker 3: No, the other comedy store.
• 1:35:57
Speaker 1: Oh, La Jolla? La Jolla is the shit. That place
• 1:36:01
is the shit. What a club.
• 1:36:03
Speaker 3: They just don't have food.
• 1:36:05
  Speaker 1: No.
• 1:36:06
  Speaker 3: Popcorn, drinks.
• 1:36:07
Speaker 1: I don't believe in food at comedy clubs either. But
• 1:36:10
it's just a different environment. La Jolla is a very nice,
• 1:36:15
beautiful place. That club is awesome.
• 1:36:17
Speaker 3: I love performing there. And with the store in L.A.,
• 1:36:23
it's like you get there and it's very, it seems very,
• 1:36:27
  you know, segregated.
• 1:36:28
Speaker 1: This is now to me.
• 1:36:30
Speaker 3: That's when I, how long ago was this? I just performed, um,
• 1:36:34
  last week, last Wednesday.
• 1:36:36
Speaker 1: That's, um, that's sad to hear. Cause it wasn't like
• 1:36:39
  that before.
• 1:36:40
Speaker 3: It seemed like the main room in the room around
• 1:36:42
the corner and the belly, all these rooms are different spaces. And,
• 1:36:49
That's to me, and it may just be that feel
• 1:36:52
because I'm not there a lot, you know. But when
• 1:36:56
I come, before I came that time, but the management
• 1:36:58
  walked up, was very pleasant.
• 1:37:00
Speaker 1: What do you mean by different spaces? Obviously, they're different rooms.
• 1:37:03
  What do you mean?
• 1:37:05
Speaker 3: It seemed like the main room is different from the
• 1:37:07
  room around the corner.
• 1:37:09
Speaker 1: Well, it is different, but what do you mean by
• 1:37:12
  feels different?
• 1:37:13
Speaker 3: It feels a little different.
• 1:37:14
Speaker 1: Well, I mean, just by its design. It's a big showroom.
• 1:37:18
It's brighter. The ceilings are taller. And then you get
• 1:37:21
into the original room, which is just tight and perfect.
• 1:37:24
The original room is like that's where you find out
• 1:37:27
what's real. I've seen a lot of people have rough sets.
• 1:37:30
They were real confident going into that room. That room
• 1:37:33
  was a truth serum.
• 1:37:34
Speaker 3: I like a tight room like that.
• 1:37:36
Speaker 1: Well, then there's the belly room. The belly room is
• 1:37:39
the ultimate truth serum. Trying out new jokes in the
• 1:37:42
belly room is the place. Because it only seats 70 people.
• 1:37:47
  You can't bullshit those people.
• 1:37:48
Speaker 3: That's the creme de la creme to me. It's a tight,
• 1:37:53
  small room.
• 1:37:53
Speaker 1: The belly room is spectacular. Such a good room.
• 1:37:56
Speaker 3: I came from small audiences.
• 1:37:59
Speaker 1: They're the best. It's the best for finding out if
• 1:38:01
jokes are real. There's nothing like a small crowd. Like
• 1:38:04
in our club, we have the little boy. Our rooms
• 1:38:08
are named after the bombs they dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
• 1:38:13
And Little Boy is only 110 seats. It's a super
• 1:38:16
  low ceiling.
• 1:38:18
Speaker 3: This is when, you know, it's those times in comedy
• 1:38:22
when you knew that that's what you actually love to do.
• 1:38:25
And I remember I was in San Antonio at this
• 1:38:29
place called Santa's. He literally owned the whole strip. The club,
• 1:38:35
the wash interior, the corner store, everything. The guy named Santa.
• 1:38:39
I didn't know that he owned it, but it was
• 1:38:41
like a rainstorm or something. The show got rained out.
• 1:38:46
And it is literally three people in this room. It's
• 1:38:51
  two ladies and it's Santa. And I don't, I don't
• 1:38:54
know that this is him at the time. And we
• 1:38:58
had to go on to get paid. The promoter was like,
• 1:39:00
I'm not paying nobody who don't go on. We still
• 1:39:02
doing the show. I'm like, okay. So this is a
• 1:39:06
hundred dollars. He's getting paid a hundred dollars. And he
• 1:39:09
was like, who, who going up? I'm like, I'm definitely
• 1:39:13
going up and I'm going up first. Like, I don't,
• 1:39:17
I don't care. I did like an hour and 30
• 1:39:20
minutes for three people. And I was like, because I
• 1:39:24
kept looking. I was like, anybody else going over there?
• 1:39:26
He was like, no, we good. I'm like, I and Santa,
• 1:39:31
I remember he finally revealed that he was the owner
• 1:39:34
of the club. And he was like, well, let me
• 1:39:36
take you to the back. He took me to the back,
• 1:39:38
and he gave me like $ 700. He was saying for performing.
• 1:39:43
He said, yeah, man, you wasn't scared. And me and
• 1:39:45
my friends had a good time. And it was like
• 1:39:48
three people. It was literally, the dude named Vance put
• 1:39:51
the show on. It was like three, Vance tell anybody,
• 1:39:53
so it was like, this is when I knew Ali
• 1:39:55
was different. When he went out, three people, he went first,
• 1:40:00
and he's like, I went 30. And he was like,
• 1:40:02
and it didn't look like he was coming down. I'm like, yo, bro,
• 1:40:06
I'm here. This is what I do. I don't, and
• 1:40:08
I need that $ 100. So, that's definitely some extra motivation.
• 1:40:12
Speaker 1: It's crazy that no one else wanted to go up.
• 1:40:14
Speaker 3: They was like, no. And, another time I was at Wiley, um,
• 1:40:19
it was a Wiley college and Marcus was performing and
• 1:40:24
the mic went out. And it's like all these people
• 1:40:27
in this, in this auditorium, the same place they shot, um,
• 1:40:30
Denzel shot the movie, the great debate. So we, and
• 1:40:32
we in this auditorium and the sound goes out and
• 1:40:37
they start ribbing Marcus. And I, and I was in
• 1:40:41
the back. I was like, what's going on? And he's like,
• 1:40:43
the sound went out and I walked out. I was like,
• 1:40:47
what's happening? And I said, hold on, Marcus, let me,
• 1:40:50
let me, let me ask him something. Wait a minute.
• 1:40:52
I know damn well y'all not in there trying to
• 1:40:54
get somebody in a problem because y'all got us in,
• 1:40:56
we didn't bring this sound system, got us in fair
• 1:40:58
east side high performance, broken clock. And, and so I say, listen, Marcus,
• 1:41:04
Marcus sat down in the back. I was like, yo,
• 1:41:06
this is what we're going to do. I'm going to talk.
• 1:41:09
Y'all going to laugh. Then I'm going to talk some more,
• 1:41:11
but y'all can't be laughing all along because we don't
• 1:41:13
have no sound. I'm not supposed to use my real
• 1:41:15
voice in this. So, I'm at like 45 and I
• 1:41:20
look back at Mark. I say, Hey man, you want
• 1:41:21
to come back up? Mark was like, no, like you
• 1:41:24
got it. Like an hour and 20. He's like, yo,
• 1:41:29
Ali's nuts. I'm like, no, this is what I do.
• 1:41:34
And I'm a figure it out.
• 1:41:36
Speaker 1: We did a show at the improv once in Hollywood and, um,
• 1:41:39
the power went out and they were going to cancel
• 1:41:41
the show. And we were sitting there talking and I said,
• 1:41:44
why don't, can we light the stage somehow? And they said, yeah,
• 1:41:48
we can get an emergency light attached to like a generator.
• 1:41:52
And we could put a, you know, run the wires
• 1:41:55
through the crowd and put an emergency light on the stage.
• 1:41:58
I go, that's that. We'll do that. And then we'll
• 1:42:00
just do stand-up with no mic. And we did the
• 1:42:02
whole show with no mic. It was the opening, middle,
• 1:42:05
and then me. I did a full hour. It was amazing.
• 1:42:09
Everybody had a great fucking time. It felt special. It
• 1:42:12
felt very unusual. You got to see what it's like
• 1:42:15
when you don't have a microphone and you're projecting to
• 1:42:18
the back of the room. Changed my pacing on things.
• 1:42:21
But it was great. It felt cool. It felt like
• 1:42:24
you were doing something. And the audience was into it.
• 1:42:27
I go, look, we're going to have fun, right? Like,
• 1:42:29
fuck it. Who cares? This is never going to happen
• 1:42:32
again probably ever. I've been doing comedy 30-something years. I've
• 1:42:36
never had that happen where I did a show with
• 1:42:38
  no microphone except that one.
• 1:42:40
Speaker 3: So this is the thing. These are the experiences that
• 1:42:46
as a comic going through the trenches that some comics
• 1:42:50
  will never have.
• 1:42:51
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 1:42:52
Speaker 3: Because they didn't come up that way. And you have
• 1:42:55
a different set of chops when you come up a
• 1:42:57
certain type of way. I've come up and just joking
• 1:43:02
had to be the craziest place because some nights you're
• 1:43:08
coming in and it's like, Nine people. But these nine
• 1:43:11
people are into comedy. And Alice would be like, you
• 1:43:14
got to do the show. We don't have a limit.
• 1:43:18
We got to do these people that's here. Because the
• 1:43:21
thing is, that whole idea that the show must go
• 1:43:25
  on regardless too.
• 1:43:28
Speaker 1: Well, I learned that from Paul Mooney too. And one
• 1:43:30
of the things that I said, I did a show
• 1:43:33
at the comedy store. It's like the first time that
• 1:43:36
Mooney ever complimented me. I was always scared of him. Because, like,
• 1:43:41
if Mooney didn't like you, it was terrifying. Because he
• 1:43:43
was a legend. He was a legend. Wrote for Richard Pryor.
• 1:43:45
And it was, like, the way he carried himself. Like,
• 1:43:47
  he didn't like you.
• 1:43:47
Speaker 3: Like, ugh. And I was 27.
• 1:43:49
Speaker 1: You know, I was young and stupid. And I went
• 1:43:53
up because I would always go up last or late.
• 1:43:55
I had late spots. And there was, like, 15 people
• 1:43:59
in the room. But I did my act. And I
• 1:44:01
heard in the back of the room, oh, oh, oh.
• 1:44:05
He was laughing, having fun. And then he grabbed me afterwards.
• 1:44:08
He goes, you're a real motherfucking comic. He goes, that's
• 1:44:10
what a real comic does. He goes, all these other motherfuckers,
• 1:44:13
they went up there and they did, oh, where you from? Bitch,
• 1:44:16
I know where I'm from. Tell me some fucking jokes.
• 1:44:19
Do your fucking act. And that's what you did. And
• 1:44:21
I was like, wow. Paul Mooney likes me.
• 1:44:25
Speaker 3: Me and Paul had a different type of relationship.
• 1:44:31
Speaker 1: Did you and Paul not get along?
• 1:44:35
Speaker 3: One, I have to always say, I loved Paul until
• 1:44:39
I met him. it's like Paul was on some bullshit
• 1:44:45
when he when I met Paul man I was at
• 1:44:47
the improv and I was featuring for him and the
• 1:44:51
improv it got me to feature for him and I
• 1:44:53
was like cool I'm excited I get to meet one
• 1:44:56
of my idols in this game one of the people
• 1:44:59
who changed the course of my pacing cause it my
• 1:45:04
lineage just sitting down I passed through Paul so it's
• 1:45:10
When I first started, I was a crazy man. I
• 1:45:12
was all over the place. Thought that you had to
• 1:45:15
have all this energy. And then this guy named Dez
• 1:45:18
White walked into the club one night. I was there.
• 1:45:23
And Dez stood in the same exact place. He never
• 1:45:26
took the mic out of the stand, put his drink
• 1:45:28
down on the stool, and Dez just stood there. And
• 1:45:31
he was destroying this room. Never took the mic out
• 1:45:36
of the stand. And he always said, people say, Dez. Dez,
• 1:45:41
why you don't take the mic out of the stand?
• 1:45:44
And he's like, because there's a stand. Let it hold
• 1:45:48
  the mic.
• 1:45:49
Speaker 1: Some of my favorite comics don't take the mic out
• 1:45:51
  of the stand. Ron White.
• 1:45:52
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:45:52
Speaker 1: Ron White just stands there with a drink on a stool,
• 1:45:55
sometimes with a cigar, just killing with the microphone in
• 1:45:59
  the stand.
• 1:46:00
  Speaker 3: Oh, man.
• 1:46:00
Speaker 1: Joey Diaz. Joey Diaz keeps the fucking mic in the stand.
• 1:46:04
And he makes me laugh harder than any fucking human
• 1:46:06
  being that's ever lived.
• 1:46:08
Speaker 3: That. So I'm going to finish Paul, then I'm going
• 1:46:12
to go to Ron. So what did he do, though?
• 1:46:14
So I'm in the green room, and at the old Empire,
• 1:46:18
where they had a downstairs, you would come through the,
• 1:46:20
it used to be a rainforest cafe.
• 1:46:22
  Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
• 1:46:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, so it was spellbinders at first, and then it changed.
• 1:46:27
So I'm sitting in the green room, and it's a
• 1:46:30
main part, then it's a smaller part. He walked into
• 1:46:33
the small part and said, hey, go count the room.
• 1:46:39
And I was like, what? Yeah, go count the room.
• 1:46:42
I was like, I don't work here like that. I
• 1:46:46
don't count the room. And he was like, yeah, all right.
• 1:46:52
Then he walked out. And then he came back like
• 1:46:56
maybe 25 minutes later. Yeah, tell you and your little
• 1:47:00
white friend that it's packed out there and I want
• 1:47:02
my bonus. Like what white friend? What are you talking about?
• 1:47:07
Raymond Cook is the manager of the club at the time.
• 1:47:10
He was talking about Raymond. And I was like, yo, Paul,
• 1:47:13
I don't count the room. I'm the feature. Why would
• 1:47:17
I be counting the fucking room? And then he said
• 1:47:20
something else negative to me, and I was like, yo, Paul,
• 1:47:24
if you say something else to me, I'm going to
• 1:47:27
kick your ass, Paul. I'm like, what is wrong with you?
• 1:47:33
So I called DL. I'm like, yo, I'm about to
• 1:47:35
fucking beat up Paul Mooney. He's like, you can't beat
• 1:47:38
up Paul Mooney. He's a legend. I'm like, even if
• 1:47:42
you beat him up, you're still not going to win.
• 1:47:44
It's like, it's going to be a loss. So I'm like, yo,
• 1:47:47
so then another time, oh, and then later on that,
• 1:47:51
that same weekend, he had this lady with him and
• 1:47:55
she was sitting at the top and I was sitting
• 1:47:57
up there and she got up and she left her purse.
• 1:48:01
So I didn't want to leave and leave the lady's
• 1:48:03
purse there. So I grabbed, I got the purse like this.
• 1:48:06
I came in. I'm like, Hey, ma'am, you love your purse.
• 1:48:08
And Paul turned around. What are you doing with her purse?
• 1:48:13
I said she left it. And then the only thing
• 1:48:17
in my head is D.L., you cannot beat up Paul Monette.
• 1:48:21
So I just walked out. I'm like, I'm going to
• 1:48:23
  fuck Paul up.
• 1:48:23
Speaker 1: What year was this?
• 1:48:24
Speaker 3: This is like three years before he died. And this
• 1:48:29
  was the old improv.
• 1:48:31
Speaker 1: This is what I heard, just for clarity. He was
• 1:48:34
struggling in the last years of his life. So you
• 1:48:38
probably didn't get the best version of Paul Mooney.
• 1:48:41
Speaker 3: So then we're here in Austin. We're performing at the
• 1:48:45
theater that's right next to the Paramount. It's another theater
• 1:48:49
that's connected to the Paramount. The black heritage, the black
• 1:48:53
art something, both of us not knowing that we had odds.
• 1:48:58
So I'm in my green room, and the lady comes in. Hey,
• 1:49:03
she's very nice. Hey, Ali, Paul Mooney's next door. everything
• 1:49:07
and you like to meet him and say and i
• 1:49:09
was like no i'm cool and then she goes paul
• 1:49:13
ali's next door you know i don't know if y'all
• 1:49:15
want to meet each other and paul's like no i'm
• 1:49:17
cool and i went up i'm in my green room
• 1:49:22
and the host is on stage and paul was getting
• 1:49:24
ready to go up and this was his apology he
• 1:49:27
walked by the room and came back like on um
• 1:49:31
Purple Rain came back and leaned in the room and
• 1:49:34
was like, hi, Ali. I mean, Paul's fucking nuts, man.
• 1:49:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, but you got to take that. You know, there's
• 1:49:45
certain people that are just eccentric. That's Paul. I mean,
• 1:49:48
I wouldn't have counted the fucking room either. I would
• 1:49:50
have been like, that's not my job.
• 1:49:52
Speaker 3: Ron White, I was in Orlando. Manager Orlando called me, saying, hey, Ali, um,
• 1:49:59
I know you have a feature, but Ron White would
• 1:50:05
like to feature for you. And I was like, I
• 1:50:10
don't know a person named Ron White. And she was like,
• 1:50:15
you don't know Ron White? I'm like, wait a minute. Like,
• 1:50:19
Ron White, Ron White? I thought he was like some
• 1:50:21
other guy who was using his name or something. Like,
• 1:50:23
his name happens to be Ron White. Like, Ron White,
• 1:50:26
Ron White? He's like, yeah. Yeah. I said, he want
• 1:50:30
a feature for who? He said, you. He called and asked.
• 1:50:33
I was like, the fuck? I said, hell yeah. So
• 1:50:36
I called Marcus. I'm like, yo, Marcus, you gonna go
• 1:50:40
up and then you gonna bring up Ron White.
• 1:50:42
  Speaker 1: When was this?
• 1:50:43
Speaker 3: This was like maybe four years ago.
• 1:50:45
  Speaker 1: That's crazy.
• 1:50:46
Speaker 3: And Ron shows up in this huge tour bus. Like,
• 1:50:56
I'm walking to the club and I'm like, buses this?
• 1:50:59
And I'm like, oh shit, it's Ron's bus. It's got
• 1:51:01
the tequila brand on it and all that. And he's
• 1:51:04
in his bus. He's not even in the green room.
• 1:51:06
Then I get a knock on the door and his manager,
• 1:51:11
he's like, hey, Ron would like to know, can he
• 1:51:13
come in the green room? I was like, Ron might
• 1:51:16
come in the green room. So he comes in. He's like, yo, man,
• 1:51:19
I just want to, I love what you do. I
• 1:51:21
just want to do some time. Ron went up there
• 1:51:24
and was destroying this room. And I couldn't wait to
• 1:51:29
get up because I wanted to just talk about fucking
• 1:51:32
Ron White just featured for me. And I destroyed his
• 1:51:37
room with Ron. He sat out and watched. He was like,
• 1:51:39
you're fucking amazing. And my mind is I'm still in
• 1:51:44
awe that Ron White wanted to fucking feature with me.
• 1:51:48
Speaker 1: Wanted to work with you.
• 1:51:49
Speaker 3: I was like, that shit was crazy to me.
• 1:51:51
Speaker 1: That's so cool. Well, you know, when he's working on
• 1:51:53
new stuff, that's what he likes to do. He likes
• 1:51:55
to go around and does a lot of sets. He's
• 1:51:58
constantly active. He's at the club tonight. We're working tonight.
• 1:52:02
He's one of the main reasons I moved here. Ron
• 1:52:05
moved here before the pandemic. So I called him up
• 1:52:08
in like 2018. I loved having him at the store.
• 1:52:10
So he started coming to the store around 2014-ish, something
• 1:52:14
like that. And, oh, my God, we had so much
• 1:52:16
fun for years and years. And he had a beautiful
• 1:52:19
place up in Beverly Hills. And then he just got
• 1:52:22
sick because he's always traveling. He just got sick of
• 1:52:24
the long flights and the traffic. And I called him up.
• 1:52:28
I go, why'd you move to Texas? He goes, Austin's amazing.
• 1:52:31
The food's fucking great. Everyone's nice. It's in the middle
• 1:52:34
of the country. If I want to fly to Florida,
• 1:52:36
it's quick. If I want to fly to, I'm like,
• 1:52:38
God damn it. Can I live in Texas? And then
• 1:52:40
the shit hit the fan with COVID. And I was like,
• 1:52:42
I gotta get the fuck out of California. This place sucks.
• 1:52:44
They're telling me what to do. This is not what
• 1:52:46
I signed up for. You tell me I can work.
• 1:52:48
You tell me I have to wear a mask.
• 1:52:49
  Speaker 3: Fuck you.
• 1:52:50
Speaker 1: I'm getting out of here. And when I came to Austin,
• 1:52:52
it was one of the main reasons why I was
• 1:52:54
willing to move here. I'm like, if we never do
• 1:52:56
comedy again, At least I can hang out with Ron.
• 1:53:00
  Speaker 3: That's amazing.
• 1:53:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, and then everybody else came. And then once, I mean,
• 1:53:03
so everybody says that I got everybody to move here.
• 1:53:05
Sort of. I got a lot of people to move here,
• 1:53:07
but Ron got me to move here. That's the most
• 1:53:09
important thing. Like, Ron got me to move here. And
• 1:53:11
then I realized how nice people are here and how
• 1:53:14
disconnected they are from show business. And I was like, oh,
• 1:53:17
this is so refreshing. Everyone's just normal. My neighbor's a
• 1:53:20
normal guy. Everyone's normal. They're regular people. Just people living
• 1:53:24
their lives, having a good time. And for me, because
• 1:53:29
I love hunting, everyone hunts out here. It's like a
• 1:53:33
normal pastime. I tell people I bow hunt in California.
• 1:53:38
Speaker 3: Texas, we have been a gem for a long time,
• 1:53:43
and we just let other people feel like they're the
• 1:53:48
  upper echelon. We're like, okay.
• 1:53:50
Speaker 1: Texas ruled forever. I mean, you've got to think, Kenneson
• 1:53:53
and Hicks, two of the greatest of all time, came
• 1:53:54
  out of Houston.
• 1:53:55
  Speaker 3: Yep.
• 1:53:56
Speaker 1: And when I was coming here all the time, I
• 1:53:58
knew it. Right. So one of the things that was
• 1:54:01
good about doing comedy is a lot of people that
• 1:54:03
moved during the pandemic just wanted to get out of California.
• 1:54:05
But they had no idea what the rest of the
• 1:54:07
world was going to be like. They'd never been to Nashville.
• 1:54:09
They'd never been to Austin. I'd been here a couple
• 1:54:12
dozen times. I knew I loved it. So I was like, look,
• 1:54:16
this will be all right. Like, I'll be fine. Like,
• 1:54:18
it looks like I'm never doing comedy again. I was like,
• 1:54:21
it looks like comedy is done. It looks like they're
• 1:54:23
going to fucking make us just stay indoors, especially in, like,
• 1:54:26
  blue cities.
• 1:54:27
Speaker 3: Like, this is crazy.
• 1:54:28
Speaker 1: You have to have a vax card to eat at
• 1:54:30
a restaurant in New York City. I'm like, this is
• 1:54:31
fucking bananas. None of this shit makes any sense.
• 1:54:34
Speaker 3: I remember you guys came. Mothership was coming. The next
• 1:54:40
thing I know, Creek in the Cave was here.
• 1:54:41
Speaker 1: Creek in the Cave was here first.
• 1:54:42
Speaker 3: Yeah. I'm saying how I heard about it. I'm like, oh,
• 1:54:46
Creek in the Cave. I'm like, damn, okay. Creek in
• 1:54:48
the Cave is coming from New York. And... Then Mothership
• 1:54:52
is here. But they had rooms. You know, the main
• 1:54:56
thing was the room that was so hard to get
• 1:55:01
in at first. It was the Austin Comedy Club. Damn,
• 1:55:05
I forget the name of it.
• 1:55:07
  Speaker 1: Velveeta Room?
• 1:55:08
Speaker 3: No, no, it was the actual comedy club.
• 1:55:10
  Speaker 1: Cap City?
• 1:55:10
  Speaker 3: Cap City.
• 1:55:11
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 1:55:12
  Speaker 3: Cap City.
• 1:55:13
Speaker 1: That place was always packed.
• 1:55:14
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:55:16
Speaker 1: I almost bought that place.
• 1:55:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, I heard that.
• 1:55:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, I almost bought that whole mall. But the guy
• 1:55:21
who was trying to sell it to me wanted way
• 1:55:24
more than it was worth. And then he got roped
• 1:55:27
up in some FBI investigation. I was told while it
• 1:55:31
was going on that he was being investigated. And I
• 1:55:33
was like, oh, OK. And then he wound up getting arrested.
• 1:55:37
But that building was for sale. The whole thing was
• 1:55:39
for sale. And I went in there. I thought about
• 1:55:41
how many shows I'd been there, how many shows I'd
• 1:55:43
seen there, how many shows I'd performed there. I'm like,
• 1:55:46
  I could own this place?
• 1:55:48
Speaker 3: Oh, my God. Cap City was the first place that
• 1:55:52
I did on the road with DL.
• 1:55:54
Speaker 1: That was a great club. Fucking great club. Perfect club.
• 1:55:59
That place was amazing. Such a fun place to work.
• 1:56:02
Speaker 3: I think that people didn't realize how the rich history
• 1:56:06
  of Houston, Dallas, Austin.
• 1:56:09
  Speaker 1: Laugh Stop.
• 1:56:09
  Speaker 3: San Antonio.
• 1:56:11
Speaker 1: Bro, Laugh Stop in Houston, in River Oaks, one of
• 1:56:14
the greatest clubs of all time. Somebody told me that
• 1:56:16
that building still exists like that, that it's still set
• 1:56:20
up like that, that there's nothing in it.
• 1:56:22
Speaker 3: Is that true? There's nothing in it, no.
• 1:56:23
Speaker 1: But it's still the same room? Yep. Man, we might
• 1:56:26
have to do a Mothership Houston.
• 1:56:29
  Speaker 3: Yeah. That's, yeah.
• 1:56:32
Speaker 1: See, if there's another city that could support like a
• 1:56:35
large group of talented up-and-comers. Houston's one of them.
• 1:56:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, so, you know, we have Seeker Group there.
• 1:56:44
Speaker 1: They had the other Cap City that was upstairs. Remember
• 1:56:46
they opened up the second one? They closed that one
• 1:56:49
and they opened up another one.
• 1:56:51
Speaker 3: You're talking about the Cap City? Oh, no, I'm sorry.
• 1:56:54
  Speaker 1: Laugh Stop.
• 1:56:55
Speaker 3: That was the Laugh Spot.
• 1:56:57
Speaker 1: Oh, no, no, no. They had that already. That already existed.
• 1:57:00
Speaker 3: No, the Laugh Spot had went upstairs on Wall. They
• 1:57:04
  had moved.
• 1:57:04
Speaker 1: I thought that was the Laugh Stop. I thought it
• 1:57:07
was the same group that... No, it was the same
• 1:57:09
group that owned the Laugh Stop in River Oaks. The
• 1:57:13
Laugh Spot was another place. I knew that because when
• 1:57:16
I was working at the Laugh Stop, Ralphie May was
• 1:57:20
working at the Laugh Spot. And we got together and
• 1:57:23
we're hanging out and eat dinner. But that was.
• 1:57:26
That was the old spot. Then there was the other
• 1:57:28
laugh stop that they put upstairs. It was a new,
• 1:57:32
but it didn't last. It was only for a couple years.
• 1:57:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't go to that.
• 1:57:35
Speaker 1: It was a good spot.
• 1:57:36
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 1:57:36
Speaker 1: Then it went under.
• 1:57:37
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 1:57:39
Speaker 1: Yeah. Ari Shaffir did it with a Hitler mustache once.
• 1:57:43
He trimmed his mustache to look like Adolf Hitler.
• 1:57:46
Speaker 3: Ari is, Ari is. is by far the craziest person
• 1:57:50
that I know. Like, I thought my Uncle Mac was
• 1:57:53
the craziest person, and then I met Ari. I'm like,
• 1:57:57
this is the craziest person that I know.
• 1:57:59
  Speaker 1: Yeah, he's awesome.
• 1:58:00
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:58:02
Speaker 1: He just moved to England. I'm like, bro, they're going
• 1:58:04
to stab you. He moved to England. They will fucking
• 1:58:07
stab you. They stab people there. Don't get stabbed.
• 1:58:10
Speaker 3: Ari is nuts, but he's such a cool dude. But
• 1:58:13
he's fucking nuts. I went to go see him at
• 1:58:17
the Creek in the Cave when he was getting ready
• 1:58:20
to film his special. And I like, yo, Ari is
• 1:58:26
so crazy. If you just... If people... It took time.
• 1:58:29
Just go through the many looks of Ari Shaffir on
• 1:58:33
the internet. The one that killed me was the half.
• 1:58:38
He was just bald on one side. I was like, yo,
• 1:58:42
is he doing Two-Face? He is insane.
• 1:58:46
Speaker 1: He did Two-Face for Batman. Yeah, he's out of his mind.
• 1:58:49
But that's really who he is. He's not trying.
• 1:58:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, he's not trying.
• 1:58:54
Speaker 1: That's what he is. He's out of his mind.
• 1:58:56
  Speaker 3: He's a fucking maniac.
• 1:58:57
  Speaker 1: Complete maniac.
• 1:58:59
Speaker 3: When he tore up Bert, when I heard about him
• 1:59:01
tearing up Bert's check, it was like $ 25, 000. He's like, yo,
• 1:59:05
I just made $ 25, 000. He just tore the check up.
• 1:59:07
He's like, they'll write you another one. I'm like, are
• 1:59:11
you insane? He's the greatest person.
• 1:59:18
  Speaker 1: He's fun.
• 1:59:18
Speaker 3: I've had some great conversations on the phone with him,
• 1:59:21
  and he's just.
• 1:59:22
Speaker 1: And I was very fucking smart, dude.
• 1:59:24
Speaker 3: I was very smart when he called me to do the, um,
• 1:59:28
his last, the endless, you know, I was like, that's cool.
• 1:59:33
  Cause that, that's where I, that's a pivoting point, a
• 1:59:37
major point in my career when I did, um, this
• 1:59:40
  is not happening.
• 1:59:41
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 1:59:41
  Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
• 1:59:42
Speaker 1: That was a great show, man. It was a great idea.
• 1:59:44
I remember when he started doing it, he started doing
• 1:59:46
it at the lab at the improv. So you remember
• 1:59:49
  the lab?
• 1:59:49
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 1:59:49
  Speaker 1: Another little room.
• 1:59:50
  Speaker 3: Cool, pretty room.
• 1:59:51
Speaker 1: Cool little room. Um, they should have never got rid
• 1:59:54
of that room. They, they changed that place and they
• 1:59:57
fucked it up. In my opinion, that's the room, the,
• 2:00:00
the main room still awesome, but the lab used to
• 2:00:03
be in the back and it was like, there wasn't
• 2:00:06
  a big bar there.
• 2:00:07
Speaker 3: I think it's still there. It's different now. Yeah. Dion Cole.
• 2:00:10
The last time I was there, Dion Cole.
• 2:00:12
Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's different. It's not, it's not the same setup.
• 2:00:15
It used to be, you went through a door and
• 2:00:16
it was like another small room. And in that small room,
• 2:00:20
it was separated from the front door. They moved the
• 2:00:22
front door and now everybody went in through the parking lot, right?
• 2:00:26
And so they went into the lab through the parking lot.
• 2:00:28
So the front door was back there now. And when
• 2:00:31
you would open it, it was all this noise from
• 2:00:33
the street and they had a curtain to block off
• 2:00:35
the noise. And you'd hear people talk. They were like
• 2:00:37
right next to your stage where they were buying tickets.
• 2:00:40
It was annoying. And then there was the bar, which
• 2:00:42
is right there. It's still a cool little small room
• 2:00:44
once everybody settles in. But the original setup was way better.
• 2:00:48
And Ari started doing it there. And I was like,
• 2:00:50
what are you doing? And he's like, I'm going to
• 2:00:52
do a storyteller show. I was like, what the fuck
• 2:00:55
is that? That's what I thought. I was like, why
• 2:01:00
are you doing that? And then he said, well, it
• 2:01:02
really helps you without like having to have like punchlines
• 2:01:05
and setups and have everything really tight. You could find
• 2:01:08
the beats in a story. And I was like, oh, well, actually,
• 2:01:10
that's brilliant. That's pretty fucking smart. It's a good alternative
• 2:01:15
sort of way to develop bits. You develop bits by
• 2:01:20
working it out, but in a more loose format of
• 2:01:23
  telling a story.
• 2:01:24
Speaker 3: And I didn't even know that that was the premise
• 2:01:26
behind it, because when I got it, it was like,
• 2:01:30
you go on and you tell a true story. And
• 2:01:33
I was like, okay, cool, that's my thing. And I
• 2:01:38
had just won Comedy Central's Comic to Watch in 2013.
• 2:01:45
So you get a package, you get an album, you
• 2:01:47
get a half hour, and you get a chance to
• 2:01:51
go on one of the shows that's already on Comedy Central.
• 2:01:54
So they was pitching me the Adam Devine show, and
• 2:01:59
I was like, hmm, I don't like it. And it
• 2:02:03
was another show. I was like, nah, I'm cool. So
• 2:02:05
every show that they would say that they wanted me
• 2:02:07
to go on, I was like, nah, that really ain't
• 2:02:09
my thing. So then Chase DeRusso, young comic called me
• 2:02:14
and said, hey, listen, you might want to go on
• 2:02:18
This Is Not Happening. I was like, what's that? He said,
• 2:02:21
it's a show, start on the internet. You know, you...
• 2:02:25
I went on it, I watched both, I think both
• 2:02:29
seasons of it on the internet. And I was like, yo,
• 2:02:32
this is the one. So I called Ann Harris, that comic,
• 2:02:36
I was like, this is a show that I want
• 2:02:37
to do. And R didn't know me. R was like...
• 2:02:42
I don't know him, but Eric Abrams is one of
• 2:02:46
the co-creators of the show. He was like, I know him,
• 2:02:50
so he's pretty good. You should bring him on. And
• 2:02:53
Ari was telling everybody, he's like, I didn't know what
• 2:02:55
he was going to do. But all I know, it
• 2:02:57
was a true, all you had to do was tell
• 2:02:59
a true story. And I was like, perfect. Eric thought
• 2:03:02
that I was going to do the story that I
• 2:03:04
did on the second time that I was on. And
• 2:03:08
I'm like, when I got there, I was listening to
• 2:03:10
people's stories. And I was like, nah, I'm going to
• 2:03:14
do a lighter story. Because the second story is Mitchell.
• 2:03:18
It's like when I was going to kill his CO.
• 2:03:21
And I was like, nah, I should do a lighter one.
• 2:03:23
And then I did the prison ride, which is affectionately
• 2:03:26
known as Mexican Got On Boots. And Ari's like, best
• 2:03:29
fucking story I ever heard. Me telling the story about
• 2:03:33
a riot, a prison riot. And I was telling what happened.
• 2:03:40
And I only did like 16 minutes of what happened.
• 2:03:43
That was a whole, that was a whole ordeal. Like
• 2:03:46
it wasn't a 16 minute riot. It was like nine hours.
• 2:03:50
Like the whole thing is like nine hours. I only
• 2:03:53
told the beginning part of it, which was, you know,
• 2:03:56
  pretty cool.
• 2:03:57
Speaker 1: You know what happened? I already lost the show, right?
• 2:04:00
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. And so that, so when the show came back,
• 2:04:04
it was with Roy Woods, they called me to do it.
• 2:04:09
And the loyal spirit in me, I called Ari first.
• 2:04:16
I was like, Hey, they want me to do this show.
• 2:04:19
I'm really not fucking with it. And he's like, no, no,
• 2:04:23
do it. I was like, what? He's like, I heard
• 2:04:26
about all the stuff. He's like, man, do it. Eric,
• 2:04:29
Eric is still shooting it. He was saying, so you
• 2:04:32
should do it because we wanted you to be the host,
• 2:04:35
but they didn't, they didn't want you to do it.
• 2:04:38
You know, they, Got Roy, which is cool.
• 2:04:40
Speaker 1: I don't think they wanted anybody affiliated with Ari to
• 2:04:42
do it. They were punishing Ari.
• 2:04:45
Speaker 3: So when they asked me.
• 2:04:46
Speaker 1: We should tell people why. So for people that don't know,
• 2:04:49
Ari got a deal. He got an offer to do
• 2:04:52
a Netflix special, and he wanted to do it. And
• 2:04:56
they wanted him to do the special on Comedy Central.
• 2:04:59
And he said, well, I don't have to. It's not
• 2:05:00
in my contract. They said, well, if you don't do it,
• 2:05:02
we're going to cancel your show. And he was like, wow.
• 2:05:06
I can't believe you would do that.
• 2:05:08
Speaker 3: And that ain't what you did to Ari. Nope. Nope.
• 2:05:11
Speaker 1: So we were trying to figure it out. I offered
• 2:05:13
to host it for free. I said, I will come
• 2:05:16
in and host it. I'd already done it. So I'll
• 2:05:18
come in and I'll host it for no money. I
• 2:05:20
go because he wanted to make sure that everybody was paid.
• 2:05:23
He was going to take out a loan and Ari
• 2:05:25
was going to pay all the grips, all the camera people.
• 2:05:27
Because they, you know, these people, they chart out their year.
• 2:05:30
They're like, oh, I'm doing this is not happening for
• 2:05:32
the next six weeks. And then I'm doing this for
• 2:05:34
five weeks. And that's their year. And that's how they
• 2:05:37
budget their life. And Ari decided that he was going
• 2:05:39
to take out a loan to pay everybody. And I'm like, wow.
• 2:05:44
I go, listen, man. I go, tell Comedy Central that
• 2:05:46
I'll host it for free. They weren't interested. They weren't
• 2:05:48
interested in anybody affiliated with him. He offered up a
• 2:05:51
bunch of other comics. They weren't interested.
• 2:05:54
Speaker 3: So I was in that group of the bunch because
• 2:05:57
I know it was you. It was Joey, me, Bert.
• 2:06:03
And they just got me to. do it. Once Ari
• 2:06:07
told me it was cool, he was like, man, do it.
• 2:06:09
Speaker 1: Yeah, Ari would never try to stop anybody from working.
• 2:06:12
Speaker 3: So what I went on and did in my protest
• 2:06:18
of you didn't want Ari, so what I did was
• 2:06:22
told a story about Ari. I just told her, like, okay, cool.
• 2:06:27
My story is Mushroom's story, which is And Ari, I
• 2:06:35
was like, second season I did this show, Ari gave
• 2:06:38
me mushrooms. And I went through the whole thing of
• 2:06:44
what happened when Ari gave me the mushrooms. I ate
• 2:06:46
the mushrooms. I didn't know that they were mushrooms, mushrooms.
• 2:06:49
I thought they were something else. And it was like,
• 2:06:51
I ate an eighth of mushrooms. And it was a
• 2:06:55
  long day.
• 2:06:59
Speaker 1: What a rude thing to not tell you to not
• 2:07:01
  eat all of them.
• 2:07:02
Speaker 3: And... I remember Janice. Janice was my assistant. And I
• 2:07:08
remember I had to fly the next day. And I'm
• 2:07:10
still gone. I'm out of my shit. So I get
• 2:07:14
to the airport and I call Janice. I said, Janice,
• 2:07:19
people are going through this machine. And then I'm not
• 2:07:24
seeing them anymore. And it's like, he's nuts. He's gone.
• 2:07:30
  Speaker 4: Like.
• 2:07:31
Speaker 3: And Janet said, they probably going to various places. And
• 2:07:34
I was like, but I don't want to go to various.
• 2:07:36
I want to go to Houston. So then when I
• 2:07:39
get up to the TSA and I said, hey, I'm
• 2:07:44
seeing a lot of people go through this machine and
• 2:07:46
then I'm not seeing them anymore. Where are they going?
• 2:07:49
The man said, man, various places. And I got out
• 2:07:53
the line. I called jan i said you are right
• 2:07:56
they are going to various that's like he's nuts like
• 2:08:01
he's losing it i'm like yo i was so toasted
• 2:08:04
and just getting on the plane with still full of
• 2:08:07
mushrooms it was i just i wanted to just close
• 2:08:10
my eyes but the shit just wasn't working it was
• 2:08:12
like i was out of it i never it's mushrooms
• 2:08:16
the crazy thing it's a crazy thing. And that same week, um,
• 2:08:21
cause I was there for a couple of days. Joy
• 2:08:23
Diaz gave me a black star. And I remember calling somebody.
• 2:08:32
He was like, yo, don't you eat that shit. If
• 2:08:36
you want to lose it, don't you? This is an
• 2:08:38
episode of I'm on Joy Diaz. This is back when
• 2:08:40
I was smoking. I took an edible with the, on
• 2:08:44
the blind Jew and me and him, It's like you
• 2:08:48
literally see us. I was fine at first. And then you,
• 2:08:54
Joy is the only person that's in this studio that's
• 2:08:57
still together. And you just slowly see us just melting.
• 2:09:00
We both did. And then I know I was speaking
• 2:09:03
very good English at one point. Then I was like, yeah.
• 2:09:07
Joy was like, no. I understand. I don't understand.
• 2:09:14
Speaker 1: The Church of What's Happening Now had some of the
• 2:09:16
greatest overdose on weed moments ever in the history of
• 2:09:20
the internet. Just Lee. Just seeing Lee Syatt just melting.
• 2:09:24
He can't keep his eyes open. He's just melting in
• 2:09:27
  his chair.
• 2:09:29
Speaker 3: At first, I was like, yo, he's tripping. Then all
• 2:09:32
of a sudden, I'm like, this is not happening to me.
• 2:09:35
  It was crazy.
• 2:09:36
Speaker 1: Joey Diaz doesn't give a fuck.
• 2:09:38
Speaker 3: He goes, I want to see the devil. The other
• 2:09:42
side of that story is another comic with me named
• 2:09:44
Billy Sorrells. He had taken some edibles, but he ain't
• 2:09:48
on the show, so he's outside. He didn't just melt
• 2:09:51
it outside. Like, he's just sitting on the ground outside
• 2:09:56
  the studio like, yo.
• 2:09:57
Speaker 1: Those black stars are 500 milligrams.
• 2:09:59
Speaker 3: Yo. That was, yeah.
• 2:10:04
Speaker 1: I saw Joey eat two of those once. He just
• 2:10:07
chucked down two of them. I'm like, that is so crazy.
• 2:10:11
That's so much. You know, Jamie doesn't feel it. Edibles
• 2:10:16
don't work on him. Jamie's got some weird fucking biological condition.
• 2:10:21
Speaker 3: Throw it at me.
• 2:10:22
  Speaker 1: I'll try it.
• 2:10:23
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 2:10:24
  Speaker 1: I'm not afraid. He doesn't give a fuck. He's not
• 2:10:26
  scared of edibles at all.
• 2:10:27
Speaker 3: I've done two different types of mushrooms. I didn't know
• 2:10:30
that there were. It's like the ones where I was
• 2:10:33
really on one. That's the one that Ari gave me.
• 2:10:35
And then there's some other ones that made me very talkative.
• 2:10:39
Speaker 1: Like, Look at Lee.
• 2:10:52
Speaker 3: Drool on his shirt.
• 2:10:53
Speaker 1: Bro, he's in another dimension right now. He can't keep
• 2:10:58
  the headphones on.
• 2:10:59
Speaker 3: He doesn't know what to do.
• 2:11:02
Speaker 1: Joey's the best. They're back. They're doing it again.
• 2:11:05
  Speaker 3: They're back?
• 2:11:05
Speaker 1: They're back together again.
• 2:11:06
  Speaker 3: Oh, man.
• 2:11:07
Speaker 1: Are they doing it out of New Jersey? Is that
• 2:11:09
  what they're doing?
• 2:11:10
Speaker 3: It has to be.
• 2:11:11
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 2:11:12
  Speaker 1: He's the best.
• 2:11:14
Speaker 3: I remember I called Moses Malone for Joey because he's
• 2:11:17
a big Moses Malone fan. Before Moses died, I called him.
• 2:11:21
He's like, you know Moses Malone? No fucking way you
• 2:11:24
know Moses Malone. I'm like, yeah, I know fucking Moses.
• 2:11:28
Moses was nuts too. Moses Malone was a fucking nut.
• 2:11:32
Speaker 1: Have you heard about these new mushrooms that make you
• 2:11:34
  see little tiny people?
• 2:11:36
  Speaker 6: Oh, no.
• 2:11:37
Speaker 3: No, I haven't. The targeted ones were Like, I called
• 2:11:40
a lot of people on my phone, and everybody's same
• 2:11:44
report was, you know, you call me, like, 3 in
• 2:11:47
the morning, tell me you want to talk to me
• 2:11:48
  about my life.
• 2:11:51
Speaker 1: Which ones are those? What did you take? It's not psilocybin?
• 2:11:55
  It's something different?
• 2:11:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's something different. It made me very talkative. D-Lay,
• 2:12:00
I told D-Lay about him. I don't know what that
• 2:12:03
would be. His comic name, D-Lay, I told him about
• 2:12:05
him because I called him, and I talked to him for, like, hours.
• 2:12:09
Just about. So then he ended up taking the same mushrooms.
• 2:12:14
He called me, and I knew what it was. I
• 2:12:15
was like, go ahead. Just talk. He was talking his
• 2:12:21
ass off. I had put the phone down and went
• 2:12:22
to sleep. I woke up. He was still talking. I
• 2:12:25
was like, yo, this shit is crazy.
• 2:12:28
  Speaker 1: What is it?
• 2:12:29
Speaker 3: Man, I got to.
• 2:12:29
Speaker 1: Jamie, put that into perplexity.
• 2:12:31
Speaker 3: I got to call.
• 2:12:32
Speaker 1: Put that into our AI sponsor and find out what
• 2:12:34
  mushrooms make you talkative.
• 2:12:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, I know who gave them to me, so I
• 2:12:38
call her and ask, hey, what was them shrooms that
• 2:12:40
you gave me? Because she went and bought them, and
• 2:12:43
I was a fucking talkative mess.
• 2:12:45
Speaker 1: I don't know what that is. I've never heard of
• 2:12:47
that before. Most of the time when people take shrooms,
• 2:12:49
they can't talk. It's like, ugh.
• 2:12:51
Speaker 3: No, I was on one. That's crazy. I wonder what
• 2:12:55
that is. Because the ones that Ari gave me.
• 2:12:57
Speaker 4: It's just the smashed mushrooms, just in general. Huh. Some
• 2:12:59
  people's response to it.
• 2:13:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, but it seems that there's different responses to different ones.
• 2:13:04
Speaker 4: I know what I'm saying. On the screen, it says
• 2:13:06
  what I just said.
• 2:13:06
  Speaker 3: Huh.
• 2:13:07
Speaker 1: I don't think there's enough research for perplexity to have
• 2:13:09
  an educated answer.
• 2:13:11
  Speaker 3: Right?
• 2:13:11
Speaker 1: How much research are they doing out there? Talkative social
• 2:13:15
on magic mushrooms, but there's no specific mushroom reliably proven
• 2:13:19
  to make you talkative.
• 2:13:20
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 2:13:20
Speaker 1: Ask if there's a mushroom that makes you see little people.
• 2:13:24
  Speaker 4: Yeah, that's different.
• 2:13:26
  Speaker 3: I know.
• 2:13:26
Speaker 1: I know, but I want to see what perplexity has
• 2:13:28
to say about it. What does perplexity say? Ask it about,
• 2:13:32
is there a mushroom that makes you see little people?
• 2:13:36
Let's see if it really is up on its psychedelic science.
• 2:13:42
I want to see what it says, though. It's just
• 2:13:46
a question to see how it handles this.
• 2:13:50
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 2:13:51
Speaker 1: A specific edible mushroom called lanmoa. Asiatica has been reported
• 2:13:59
to cause very vivid hallucinations. You say hallucinations. Maybe they're
• 2:14:03
really little people right there. Of little people when it's undercooked,
• 2:14:07
a phenomenon known as Lilliputian hallucinations. So the thing is,
• 2:14:11
how do you know it's a hallucination? Maybe you're just
• 2:14:15
now can see these things that people have been writing
• 2:14:18
about for eons. How ignorant are people and how arrogant
• 2:14:22
are we? That we know everything that's going on all
• 2:14:25
  around us all the time.
• 2:14:26
  Speaker 3: We don't.
• 2:14:27
Speaker 1: People have always thought gremlins were real and gnomes were real.
• 2:14:31
  And fairies.
• 2:14:32
Speaker 4: Studying that since the 60s.
• 2:14:34
Speaker 1: Of course they have been. I'm studying it right now.
• 2:14:37
Let's study. Let's go study mushrooms.
• 2:14:40
  Speaker 3: Man.
• 2:14:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, they've been studying it, but the real problem is
• 2:14:45
there's got to be a bunch of... I know for
• 2:14:47
sure there's other strains that are much more potent because
• 2:14:50
  I know a guy who's a mushroom guy. He's like,
• 2:14:53
deep in the world of mushrooms. And he was explaining
• 2:14:55
to me, you know, there's one that's like 10X stronger,
• 2:14:58
and there's new ones that they found. I think they
• 2:15:00
found a new one, I want to say in China,
• 2:15:03
they found a new hallucinogenic mushroom. But this one, this
• 2:15:06
Lilliputian one is weird because it's not psilocybin.
• 2:15:09
Speaker 4: So it's cooked. This has something to do with cooking it.
• 2:15:11
  Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 2:15:12
Speaker 4: Once you know it, you're supposed to eat them raw.
• 2:15:14
Speaker 1: No, it's... that I think this might be the Chinese
• 2:15:17
one because I think it's a, is it?
• 2:15:19
  Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay.
• 2:15:20
Speaker 1: So this is, I conflated the two. So they eat it.
• 2:15:23
If you cook it and you do a real good
• 2:15:25
job cooking it, you don't trip. But apparently some people
• 2:15:28
have not cooked it and eaten it and go, Oh,
• 2:15:31
wait a minute. What are we cooking out of this?
• 2:15:33
When you're, you might be cooking out whatever the mushroom
• 2:15:36
is giving you to let you see the spirit world
• 2:15:38
or see the fairy world or the gnome world or,
• 2:15:41
  Whatever it is.
• 2:15:42
Speaker 4: You can get it in restaurants.
• 2:15:44
Speaker 1: Let's go. I'd be like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
• 2:15:46
  Speaker 3: Undercook my....
• 2:15:49
Speaker 1: Just put it on some salad dressing. Set that shit out.
• 2:15:52
  Let's go.
• 2:15:52
  Speaker 3: I don't have... Unfortunately, I don't have a problem with mushrooms.
• 2:15:57
  I think that... Unfortunately?
• 2:15:59
Speaker 1: What do you mean?
• 2:16:00
Speaker 3: Because, you know, some people are like, you shouldn't be
• 2:16:02
on there. But I don't have a problem with mushrooms,
• 2:16:06
especially if I'm in a safe environment. But Being at
• 2:16:12
the Lowe's on mushrooms, that's not the best place to be.
• 2:16:18
Speaker 1: Also, trying to fight it. If you fight it, you're fucked.
• 2:16:22
If you start going and you start, no, I don't
• 2:16:24
like this. Like, uh-oh, it's going to get dark on you.
• 2:16:28
Speaker 3: Trying to wrestle with it. I've had them in chocolate,
• 2:16:31
like little chocolate squares, and it's been a time. It's
• 2:16:37
  been a time.
• 2:16:38
Speaker 1: Sometimes it can get rough.
• 2:16:39
Speaker 3: To see little people... I definitely want to be somewhere
• 2:16:43
where I just need to be somewhere safe.
• 2:16:48
Speaker 1: Brian Simpson has a hilarious story about someone gave him
• 2:16:50
a mushroom chocolate bar and he put it in his
• 2:16:53
freezer and forgot. Forgot that it was a mushroom bar
• 2:16:56
and then just ate the whole thing and just went
• 2:16:59
to Pluto. He's like Dr. Manhattan sitting on Mars in
• 2:17:07
  a fucking lotus position.
• 2:17:09
Speaker 4: This one's kind of strange. It says it doesn't matter
• 2:17:11
who you are or what you do, you're going to
• 2:17:14
have the same experience as everybody else who's done it.
• 2:17:16
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 2:17:17
Speaker 1: At that point in time, when do we start to
• 2:17:20
say maybe there's something in this substance, this compound, this
• 2:17:24
molecule that lets you interact with something that's real, that's
• 2:17:27
around you? If it's repeatable over and over and over again,
• 2:17:30
if all these people see the same thing over and
• 2:17:32
over and over again, and people have been writing about
• 2:17:35
it since the beginning of time, they've been writing about
• 2:17:37
elves and fairies and gnomes and magic people in the woods.
• 2:17:41
What do you think they were doing? They were probably
• 2:17:42
  eating these fucking mushrooms.
• 2:17:44
Speaker 3: So it's this show that I watch that I still
• 2:17:48
don't know what this show is about. But I've watched,
• 2:17:52
I'm on season number four. And I have no idea
• 2:17:57
  what it's called from.
• 2:17:58
Speaker 1: Ah, I've been watching it. I love that show. I'm
• 2:18:01
in the middle of season four right now.
• 2:18:03
Speaker 3: And so, you know, he's taking Mushroom.
• 2:18:04
Speaker 1: The one guy did. Spoiler alert.
• 2:18:07
Speaker 3: No, but you know.
• 2:18:08
Speaker 1: But you know already. Big spoiler. I know, but the
• 2:18:10
people that are listening don't know.
• 2:18:12
Speaker 3: It's still going to be fantastic.
• 2:18:13
Speaker 1: Don't fuck this up. It's good.
• 2:18:15
Speaker 3: No, it's on MG.
• 2:18:16
Speaker 1: No, they're moving it. Oh, they're moving it?
• 2:18:18
Speaker 4: Oh, shit. One of these new shows that's been talked
• 2:18:19
  about is getting moved.
• 2:18:20
  Speaker 3: No, no, no.
• 2:18:21
  Speaker 1: That's still on Paramount. I think it's MGM. I think
• 2:18:26
it says MGM. Great fucking show. Very original. From is
• 2:18:33
  officially on Netflix.
• 2:18:34
Speaker 3: There it is. Oh, damn.
• 2:18:35
Speaker 1: Oh, wait a minute. Hold on. Maybe it's on Netflix
• 2:18:39
  as well.
• 2:18:39
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's all I was saying.
• 2:18:41
Speaker 1: Oh, that's what it is. It debuted on Epix.
• 2:18:45
Speaker 3: But you watched all these seasons. Good show. But you
• 2:18:49
have no idea what... There's no rules. And so I
• 2:18:55
called my director. I said, hey, I want to make
• 2:18:58
a show that is about whatever we're doing. And he's like, well,
• 2:19:05
give me an example. And I say, watch From. Like,
• 2:19:08
I've watched all. I cannot tell you what this show
• 2:19:13
is about. It's like I just know that this shit
• 2:19:17
  is good.
• 2:19:17
Speaker 1: For people that don't know, that want to watch it,
• 2:19:19
it's people trapped in this town. They all have the
• 2:19:22
same circumstance. There's a downed tree in the road. They
• 2:19:25
can't go further. So they turn around, and they find
• 2:19:29
themselves in a loop that keeps leading them through this town.
• 2:19:31
Speaker 3: To the same town.
• 2:19:32
Speaker 1: Over and over and over and over again. And no
• 2:19:33
one in the town can escape. And at nighttime, monsters
• 2:19:36
come out. And they look like people. They look like
• 2:19:38
a mailman. They look very normal.
• 2:19:41
Speaker 3: That scary-ass milkman. That milkman is insane.
• 2:19:46
Speaker 1: That old lady that knocks on the window.
• 2:19:49
  Speaker 3: Terrifying.
• 2:19:50
Speaker 1: Terrifying show it's it gives me anxiety and i know
• 2:19:53
  it's all fake.
• 2:19:54
  Speaker 3: It's it's like it's a crazy show yeah and season
• 2:20:01
four is even more bizarre yeah like everything that i'd
• 2:20:05
be thinking i was like yo i think this is
• 2:20:08
what it is and then it don't it doesn't be
• 2:20:11
that but then it come and i'm like see and
• 2:20:14
like but i'm like see what like what am i
• 2:20:16
like i don't know the freak this show is going
• 2:20:19
  they don't.
• 2:20:19
Speaker 1: Know no one knows where it's going but it's like
• 2:20:21
Lost the same people that made Lost made that show
• 2:20:25
word yeah that's why it has that same sort of
• 2:20:27
feel like crazy doesn't make nothing you can't predict what's
• 2:20:31
gonna happen nothing makes sense yeah very entertaining.
• 2:20:35
Speaker 3: Lloyd tickles the shit out of me Lloyd is mad
• 2:20:37
about every guy like but it's so it's a crazy
• 2:20:43
it's crazy but it's very interesting like I don't miss.
• 2:20:46
Speaker 1: It I love it Yeah, I've been binging it. So
• 2:20:50
I started, I guess me and my wife started about
• 2:20:53
a month ago or so. And we burned through the
• 2:20:58
first three seasons. And now we're into the fourth. Yeah,
• 2:21:02
it's good. And I think the next season is coming
• 2:21:04
out in 2027. But I don't know. I think the
• 2:21:07
next season is the last season unless they decide to
• 2:21:09
  keep it going.
• 2:21:10
  Speaker 3: Finale. Finale.
• 2:21:11
  Speaker 1: It's the finale?
• 2:21:12
Speaker 4: They just announced that it's going to be the last season.
• 2:21:15
Speaker 1: Maybe when that money comes rolling in. But the thing
• 2:21:18
about this kind of show is you can do whatever
• 2:21:20
you want. You can go back in time. You can
• 2:21:22
do wild shit. I don't want to give anything away,
• 2:21:24
but there's no rules. You can make anything happen.
• 2:21:29
Speaker 3: You can make anything happen.
• 2:21:30
Speaker 1: It's a very strange show, but it's very entertaining.
• 2:21:33
  Speaker 3: Oh, man.
• 2:21:34
Speaker 1: It's a very entertaining show. But if you want to
• 2:21:37
just sit at home and watch shit and not do anything... Man,
• 2:21:41
you never picked a better time to be alive. You
• 2:21:45
could waste your whole life just staring at a screen.
• 2:21:49
Speaker 3: When I ask people, because my palate for what I
• 2:21:52
take in is different than a lot of people. And
• 2:21:57
I turn people on to a show. When I turned
• 2:21:59
my boy on to Pinky Blinders, I was like, yo.
• 2:22:01
Pinky Blinders is a great show. I was like, yo,
• 2:22:03
you got to watch Pinky Blinders. He called me and
• 2:22:05
was like, yo, this is a great show. And I
• 2:22:08
remember my boy D-Lake got so invested. And what was
• 2:22:12
the first show? The motorcycle show that I turned him
• 2:22:14
  on to.
• 2:22:15
Speaker 1: I know what you're talking about. I never watched it.
• 2:22:20
What is that show? That motorcycle show that everybody liked?
• 2:22:22
You know what I'm talking about, Channing?
• 2:22:24
Speaker 3: Sons of Anarchy. That's it. Sons of Anarchy. I turned
• 2:22:26
him on to Sons of Anarchy. And it's a person
• 2:22:29
on there that you kind of get invested in. And
• 2:22:32
I remember he called me and said something about him.
• 2:22:35
And I was like, yo, who? Like who?
• 2:22:38
  Speaker 1: What?
• 2:22:38
Speaker 3: What'd you say? and I'm putting on my shoes, and
• 2:22:41
then I notice, are you talking about the person on
• 2:22:44
Sons of Anarchy? He said, yeah, that's fucked up what
• 2:22:47
they did. I was like, yo, you a crazy man.
• 2:22:52
He's like, no, I'm so invested. I was like, yo, man,
• 2:22:57
you a wild person. But, you know, Sons of Anarchy,
• 2:23:01
Pinky Blinders, like, I was big on Yellowstone, and now
• 2:23:06
the two spin-offs of Yellowstone, Marshalls, And the Dutton Ranch,
• 2:23:11
I can't not watch it. Like, it's some good shows
• 2:23:16
out there. And I just can't watch the typical stuff.
• 2:23:21
I got to watch something that has a little more
• 2:23:24
to it than what normal people would watch. Because I
• 2:23:30
like to see normal people in shows, like something I
• 2:23:33
can relate to. The Dutton Ranch, you know, being Texas,
• 2:23:38
this is, I don't, How ranching is, this is how
• 2:23:42
I always experience how ranching goes with cows and how
• 2:23:47
you keep your land and all these different fights that
• 2:23:50
people have over land. I'm like, shit is pretty interesting.
• 2:23:54
Speaker 1: It's very interesting. Taylor Sheridan's a friend of mine. The
• 2:23:58
guy made that. He was on here the other day.
• 2:24:02
  Speaker 3: Talking about it.
• 2:24:03
Speaker 1: But the other show that I love is Landman. Same
• 2:24:05
kind of deal. Mm-hmm. It's all about the oil industry.
• 2:24:08
You just realize, like, oh, Jesus, is this how all
• 2:24:11
  this works?
• 2:24:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's other things happening in life, and it's way
• 2:24:15
more notorious people than a drug dealing show. This is, man,
• 2:24:21
  crude oil is a business.
• 2:24:24
Speaker 1: So it's such a big business, of course you're going
• 2:24:26
to get devious shit going on.
• 2:24:28
Speaker 3: You're going to get shit happening. Has to. Yeah.
• 2:24:31
Speaker 1: The real world of oil must be nuts. It must
• 2:24:34
be nuts. I mean, that's why we're in war right now.
• 2:24:36
Speaker 3: And you have to be ruthless, you know, with oil. Like,
• 2:24:41
that's a big thing. And I don't understand fake meat. Like,
• 2:24:45
why would people be giving somebody fake meat?
• 2:24:48
Speaker 1: Well, because they make money selling fake meat.
• 2:24:51
  Speaker 3: That's why.
• 2:24:52
Speaker 1: I mean, that's what a lot of people were trying
• 2:24:54
to push while they were saying that cows are bad. Cows,
• 2:24:57
the methane, the environment, man, it's bullshit. All they're doing
• 2:25:02
is trying to– someone is pushing this idea that we
• 2:25:05
need to stop eating meat because they're profiting off of
• 2:25:07
  us not eating meat.
• 2:25:08
Speaker 3: That's what it is.
• 2:25:09
Speaker 1: That's all it is. It's not bad for you. It's
• 2:25:12
good for you. You need it. It's protein. It's super
• 2:25:14
healthy and one of the best foods in the world
• 2:25:16
for you. There's just a bunch of horse shit out
• 2:25:18
there saying that we need to eat less meat for
• 2:25:20
the environment. No, we need to figure out how to
• 2:25:24
not pollute. That's for sure. But regenerative farms aren't polluting.
• 2:25:27
You're full of shit. It's not true. If you want
• 2:25:30
to say we need to stop doing factory farming, okay, maybe. Yeah,
• 2:25:35
that's probably a good thing to do. But you need
• 2:25:37
to figure out how to feed all these fucking people.
• 2:25:39
You've developed a system that's entirely reliant on massive amounts
• 2:25:43
of animals moving through. The amount of chickens that people
• 2:25:46
eat in America every day is crazy. What are the
• 2:25:51
amount of chickens that get consumed in America every day?
• 2:25:54
Speaker 3: Let's guess. 20 million. At least.
• 2:25:59
Speaker 1: At least. I'm going to say 50 million. 50 million
• 2:26:03
chickens a day. How many million chickens a day get killed?
• 2:26:06
  Speaker 4: Oh, that's a different question.
• 2:26:08
Speaker 1: Oh, okay. How many do we eat? How many millions
• 2:26:10
of chickens do we eat every day in America?
• 2:26:13
Speaker 3: Because I know I can account for three in my.
• 2:26:17
  Speaker 4: House. 22 million?
• 2:26:18
Speaker 1: 22 million chickens every day, son.
• 2:26:21
  Speaker 3: That's nuts.
• 2:26:23
Speaker 1: That is a crazy amount. That's way bigger than the
• 2:26:25
entire residence of Los Angeles. If every person was a chicken,
• 2:26:32
we eat that amount in this country every day. That's crazy.
• 2:26:35
Speaker 3: In my home alone, if we roasting chicken, if we
• 2:26:40
going to get a roast chicken, we're going to get
• 2:26:41
three of them. I didn't even know that I could
• 2:26:45
eat a whole chicken by myself until I did it.
• 2:26:48
It's like, yo, man, this Muslim.
• 2:26:55
Grocery store, they sell them in there and it's already
• 2:26:58
roasted and you get two garlic sauces with each chicken.
• 2:27:02
And once you dip a piece of that chicken in
• 2:27:04
that garlic sauce, it's not going to survive. It's like
• 2:27:07
I bought three of them because I know if two
• 2:27:10
are going to make it home, I have to eat
• 2:27:11
this one by myself. And they put it on a
• 2:27:14
piece of pita bread. It's already roasted and it's insane
• 2:27:19
that I would eat a whole chicken by myself.
• 2:27:21
Speaker 1: Estimates suggest 24 to 26 million chickens are killed every
• 2:27:25
day in the United States for meat. So if you
• 2:27:29
don't want factory farming, you've got to figure out a
• 2:27:32
solution where you can get 26 million chickens a day.
• 2:27:35
Or you convince people they need to stop eating meat.
• 2:27:39
Speaker 3: But if we look at, like, say if I'm looking
• 2:27:42
at a show, Game of Thrones or House of Dragons,
• 2:27:47
when I would see them sit down to eat, it
• 2:27:50
was a lot of meat on that table.
• 2:27:53
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 2:27:54
Speaker 3: Variations of meat. It's a whole— I've never seen the
• 2:27:57
king sit down. It wasn't a whole entire pig on
• 2:28:01
the table. And then if you most people haven't bought
• 2:28:07
a lamb and you think that a lamb is enough.
• 2:28:11
It depends on what you on who's there. If you
• 2:28:15
if we if it's it and it's after the fast.
• 2:28:19
and you put a lamb on a spew, and all
• 2:28:22
these Muslim families come to your house, that's not enough.
• 2:28:25
You need another lamb. You need two lambs. Like, whole lambs. Man,
• 2:28:32
meat is delicious. It's great for you, too. Don't let
• 2:28:35
anybody tell you any different. They can, but I'm not
• 2:28:38
really listening. Like, when somebody tell me about a vegan situation,
• 2:28:43
I'll listen to you, but none of it is going,
• 2:28:48
it's like, You know how they say something comes in
• 2:28:51
one ear and go out the other? It's not even
• 2:28:52
going in the ear. It's like I've already made my decision. Okay,
• 2:28:56
I'll hear you. But I'm not really listening to you.
• 2:29:00
I'm eating the lamb. Goat, I'm eating it.
• 2:29:03
Speaker 1: Life eats life. It's just the factory farming thing is
• 2:29:06
the uncomfortable part. That's the gross part. And if you
• 2:29:10
just were on a ranch, it's natural.
• 2:29:12
Speaker 3: It's natural. If you want to get overtaken, just let
• 2:29:16
the animals just do their thing. Chocolate. and see how many, see, see,
• 2:29:20
don't you see a, I am legend taught you that.
• 2:29:23
It's like, yo, how many antlers ran through a place,
• 2:29:29
a stampede? Like it's a, so even like with, with
• 2:29:33
the thing that happens in the ocean, sardines, right? So mass,
• 2:29:38
all these mass sardines come one spot. Then the whales
• 2:29:42
come first. Then the sharks come. And then, then we
• 2:29:47
still get sardines. after all these, this ecosystem is eating,
• 2:29:51
we still get sardines. It's, you're not running out of natural,
• 2:29:57
if you let everything do its thing. You know, do
• 2:29:59
you know how many jellyfish it is? Somebody should start
• 2:30:02
eating them. You know what I mean? Because that is
• 2:30:04
a crazy, jellyfish can mob out. Like, mob out.
• 2:30:09
Speaker 1: And they can kill you.
• 2:30:10
Speaker 3: And they can kill you.
• 2:30:11
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 2:30:11
Speaker 3: Somebody eat them. Something eats them.
• 2:30:14
Speaker 1: You can eat them at Chinese restaurants. I've had jellyfish before.
• 2:30:17
  Speaker 3: Was it good?
• 2:30:17
  Speaker 1: I don't remember it being good. I don't remember where
• 2:30:20
I ate it, but I remember someone cooked a specific
• 2:30:23
type of jellyfish, and I was like, okay. I didn't
• 2:30:25
even know you could cook that.
• 2:30:27
Speaker 3: In Texas and Louisiana.
• 2:30:28
Speaker 1: What kind of jellyfish are edible? Find that out.
• 2:30:31
Speaker 3: In Texas and Louisiana, the amount of crawfish that we
• 2:30:35
eat in two months is literally insane.
• 2:30:39
Speaker 1: Imagine if they didn't. Imagine what crawfish would be.
• 2:30:42
Speaker 3: Imagine. I know I can account for at least 50
• 2:30:47
  pounds by myself.
• 2:30:49
Speaker 1: Think of how many crawfish there would be if people
• 2:30:52
weren't eating them. Like when I was a kid, I
• 2:30:54
grew up in Florida for a while. We lived in
• 2:30:56
Florida in Gainesville, and there was alligators there.
• 2:30:58
  Speaker 3: Gainesville, Florida.
• 2:30:59
Speaker 1: But they were protected.
• 2:31:00
  Speaker 3: Wow.
• 2:31:01
Speaker 1: Back then, the alligators were protected.
• 2:31:03
  Speaker 3: Like the Everglades.
• 2:31:04
Speaker 1: Well, it wasn't the Everglades. Okay, hold on. Edible jellyfish.
• 2:31:09
Best known edible species used in Asian cuisine. Oh, boy.
• 2:31:13
Try to say that word. Ropilema. Escalentum, often referred to
• 2:31:19
as the Japanese edible jellyfish. That's a lot easier. Or
• 2:31:22
flame jellyfish. So there's a few different species of jellyfish. Anyway,
• 2:31:28
my point was when I was a kid, alligators were protected.
• 2:31:32
And they were at this lake. And you could see them.
• 2:31:34
And people would throw marshmallows in the water. And the
• 2:31:35
alligators would eat them. And then now there's too many. Like,
• 2:31:42
there's so many alligators there now. Like, they can't get
• 2:31:45
rid of them. They're in every body of water. Everywhere
• 2:31:47
  you go, there's alligators.
• 2:31:49
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 2:31:49
Speaker 1: The entire Everglades is filled with alligators. Golf courses filled
• 2:31:54
  with alligators.
• 2:31:54
Speaker 3: I remember when that kid got eaten.
• 2:31:59
  Speaker 1: Oh, Disney World?
• 2:32:00
Speaker 3: Yeah. And I was like, yo, that's insanity. Because I
• 2:32:04
don't trust a puddle of water in Florida. No.
• 2:32:07
  Speaker 4: I don't.
• 2:32:08
  Speaker 3: A puddle. It could be a puddle. I'm like, it's
• 2:32:10
an alligator. What they remove? 400 some odd alligators from
• 2:32:15
  Disney World.
• 2:32:16
Speaker 1: Oh, they remove them all the time. They have to
• 2:32:19
check every day. They have to go back there and
• 2:32:21
make sure that there's no alligators.
• 2:32:22
  Speaker 3: It's like a huge number.
• 2:32:24
  Speaker 1: It's a huge number.
• 2:32:26
Speaker 3: Maybe 24 this year, 40 or something this year, but
• 2:32:29
  it's 400 or something a while. That's insane.
• 2:32:32
Speaker 1: You know, Disney World has a bass fishing lake. You
• 2:32:35
can go bass fishing at Disney World. There's like a
• 2:32:38
little trip that you take. You go there. 414 alligators
• 2:32:42
removed from Disney World since Toddler's death 10 years ago.
• 2:32:47
That's a lot of monsters. That's a lot of monsters, man.
• 2:32:51
  They're legit monsters.
• 2:32:53
Speaker 3: I remember when I was in Guam. I was in
• 2:32:55
Guam doing a show. And I think the military had
• 2:32:58
moved there. And there was a bird that they were
• 2:33:00
trying to protect. And so they killed all these snakes.
• 2:33:05
And this is how when you change the ecosystem to something,
• 2:33:07
something happens. So the snakes, not only were they eating
• 2:33:12
that bird, but they were eating and controlling the toad population.
• 2:33:18
So when they got rid of the snake, we were
• 2:33:22
coming back from the show, and it's like it's literally
• 2:33:27
hundreds of thousands of frogs that come out at night.
• 2:33:30
  Speaker 4: They're everywhere.
• 2:33:34
Speaker 3: It's like you just see them flat in the street
• 2:33:36
because you can't miss them. It was hundreds of thousands
• 2:33:41
of frogs on Guam. And I was like, yo, man.
• 2:33:45
People fuck up everything. They got to do something, man.
• 2:33:47
Speaker 1: People meddle. Yeah, they got to bring the snake back.
• 2:33:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, got to bring the snake back. Stop.
• 2:33:51
Speaker 1: Stop. Stop your bullshit. People just meddle. I mean, there's
• 2:33:57
so many countries that are infested with animals that people
• 2:34:00
brought in to kill other animals. You know, like Australia
• 2:34:03
has a giant feral cat problem. They brought in feral cats,
• 2:34:07
I think, to kill it. I forget what species. I
• 2:34:09
think it was a toad they were trying to kill off.
• 2:34:11
Speaker 3: My neighborhood has a goddamn cat problem. My neighborhood is
• 2:34:16
like one cat has some babies. And my family has
• 2:34:22
something to do with it. We fed the cat and
• 2:34:25
  then shit. Of course.
• 2:34:27
Speaker 1: You want to be nice. Meanwhile, they're killing billions of
• 2:34:30
birds every year in this country. cats I love cats
• 2:34:34
I love cats too but they kill billions house cats
• 2:34:37
kill billions of birds and mammals in this country.
• 2:34:39
Speaker 3: Every year if you you don't have a bug problem
• 2:34:42
you have a cat in your house because we you
• 2:34:44
know we had these water bugs they call them cockroaches
• 2:34:47
but I've watched it before I left the cat that's
• 2:34:50
just outside he was just slapping one around it's like
• 2:34:52
five of them dead out there he's just slapping one
• 2:34:55
around like just toying with him like but I don't
• 2:34:58
mind because then they never make it into my house
• 2:35:02
  It's like cat's eye.
• 2:35:03
Speaker 4: You know about the four pest campaign that happened in China?
• 2:35:07
  Speaker 3: What is that?
• 2:35:08
Speaker 1: What did they do?
• 2:35:08
Speaker 4: It explains it to you in just these little four.
• 2:35:10
Speaker 1: Under Mao, aimed at exterminating rats, flies, mosquitoes, and sparrows
• 2:35:14
as a part of the Great Leap Forward. It was
• 2:35:17
framed as a public hygiene and agricultural protection drive meant
• 2:35:20
to reduce disease and protect grain from being eaten or contaminated.
• 2:35:23
Mass mobilization methods included trapping and poisoning rats, swatting flies
• 2:35:28
and mosquitoes, and organized efforts to To scare and kill sparrows.
• 2:35:34
Speaker 5: Before you get to the end here, they had one
• 2:35:36
little problem, so they introduced something else to fix that problem.
• 2:35:38
That created a new problem, so they introduced something else
• 2:35:40
  to fix that problem.
• 2:35:41
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 2:35:42
Speaker 5: And it ended here with tens of millions of people
• 2:35:45
dying from a famine because they didn't have the natural ecosystem.
• 2:35:49
Speaker 1: This is crazy. So sparrows were targeted because they ate
• 2:35:53
grain seeds, but they also consumed large numbers of crop-eating insects.
• 2:35:57
Their near extinction caused an ecological imbalance leading to insect
• 2:36:01
population booms, lower crop yields, and contributing to Chinese famine,
• 2:36:05
the Great Chinese Famine, which tens of millions died.
• 2:36:08
Speaker 3: Wow. You got to give something to get something.
• 2:36:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, man. Don't think you're smarter than nature, you dumb fuck.
• 2:36:16
Speaker 3: You got to give something to get something.
• 2:36:18
Speaker 1: There's a balance out there, and we don't totally understand
• 2:36:20
  that balance.
• 2:36:21
Speaker 3: What's this fish that we have now?
• 2:36:24
Speaker 1: Asian carp. The one that's infested all the different lakes.
• 2:36:27
And then the snakehead, that's another one.
• 2:36:29
Speaker 3: Then that torpedoes up.
• 2:36:32
Speaker 1: Oh, that's the Asian carp. They fly through the air
• 2:36:34
when you're in a boat. They just, for whatever reason,
• 2:36:36
when you're in a boat, they just try to throw
• 2:36:38
themselves onto the boat. They're like, get me the fuck
• 2:36:43
out of this lake. There's so many of them. And
• 2:36:46
they don't have a natural predator. And they bring them
• 2:36:48
into places sometimes to clean up the algae. And then
• 2:36:51
also now you have a carp problem. Now the carp
• 2:36:54
eat all the algae. They eat everything. Your whole lake
• 2:36:57
looks like a swimming pool. There's no algae left. Look
• 2:37:00
at these fucking things. That is crazy. That's the Illinois River.
• 2:37:05
I mean, this is just hundreds of fish just flying
• 2:37:08
through the air everywhere they go. How nuts is that?
• 2:37:11
Have you ever seen people, they shoot them with bows
• 2:37:14
and arrows? So they wait for them to hop up
• 2:37:16
in the air and they try to catch them in
• 2:37:17
the air with a bow and arrow.
• 2:37:18
Speaker 3: With the string on it. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 2:37:19
  Speaker 1: There's a bunch of people do that. That's a very...
• 2:37:23
  popular sport.
• 2:37:24
Speaker 3: Is this fish edible.
• 2:37:27
  Speaker 1: I don't know I've never heard of it eating. I
• 2:37:30
know people eat regular carp. I don't know if Asian.
• 2:37:33
  Is Asian carp edible?
• 2:37:35
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 2:37:36
Speaker 1: Yep. There you go. It's lean and nutritious?
• 2:37:39
Speaker 4: It has a clean, mild flavor.
• 2:37:42
Speaker 3: So I would just have a net rolling behind me.
• 2:37:45
Speaker 1: Filet of fish. There you go. Don't you guys need product?
• 2:37:48
There you go. Get out there with bows and arrows
• 2:37:51
  and get it done.
• 2:37:52
Speaker 3: How many crawfish does Texas and Louisiana consume in crawfish season?
• 2:37:57
Speaker 1: That's a good question. I guess you would have to
• 2:37:59
do it in pounds, right? Would you do it in
• 2:38:01
pounds or millions of actual crawfish? Because they don't measure
• 2:38:05
them in individuals. They weigh them by weight, right?
• 2:38:09
Speaker 3: Because they're kind of little. Yeah, they go by weight.
• 2:38:11
Speaker 1: How many pounds of crawfish do you think? Texas, just
• 2:38:14
say Texas and Louisiana in a year.
• 2:38:16
  Speaker 3: 50 million?
• 2:38:18
  Speaker 1: 50 million?
• 2:38:19
Speaker 5: I have to ask again, but it did give me
• 2:38:23
90% of the farm crawfish comes from Louisiana.
• 2:38:25
  Speaker 3: Yeah. Wow. 90%.
• 2:38:28
  Speaker 1: How many pounds?
• 2:38:29
  Speaker 4: I didn't get the answer.
• 2:38:34
Speaker 1: How many pounds does Texas and Louisiana consume in a year?
• 2:38:39
I'm going to say 2 million pounds.
• 2:38:41
Speaker 3: No, it's got to be. Really?
• 2:38:43
Speaker 1: Two million pounds is a lot. It's fucking way more
• 2:38:47
than that. What is it? What is it?
• 2:38:48
Speaker 5: Seventy percent of the consumed amount is eaten in Louisiana,
• 2:38:53
and the total is upwards of 150 million pounds.
• 2:38:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm telling you. 120 to 150 million annually.
• 2:39:02
  Speaker 3: Whoa. Yeah.
• 2:39:04
  Speaker 1: Just in Louisiana.
• 2:39:05
Speaker 5: Seventy percent, which is almost 100 million pounds of that
• 2:39:07
  is just in Louisiana.
• 2:39:10
Speaker 3: That's crazy. Between crawfish boils and crawfish egg touffé, that is...
• 2:39:15
  Fucking delicious.
• 2:39:18
Speaker 1: That's delicious. That is a crazy thing.
• 2:39:20
Speaker 4: Texas doesn't have a number. It's just tens of millions.
• 2:39:23
Speaker 1: Well, all we need, we've got the Louisiana. I would
• 2:39:27
have thought there would be double what the whole country ate.
• 2:39:30
  That's crazy.
• 2:39:30
Speaker 3: Like, Maryland actually thinks that they are big on crab,
• 2:39:35
and we'd just be shaking our head like, okay... I
• 2:39:42
think we ship crab to them. The Chesapeake Bay cannot
• 2:39:47
outdo the Gulf of Mexico. Gulf of America now, by
• 2:39:52
the way. We still Gulf of Mexico. I don't think
• 2:39:57
Mexico agreed. I don't think they did either. This is
• 2:39:59
  not the Gulf of America.
• 2:40:01
Speaker 1: We're not saying that.
• 2:40:02
  Speaker 3: That's hilarious.
• 2:40:10
Speaker 1: Well, hey, brother. It's great to talk to you again,
• 2:40:12
  as always. It's always fun.
• 2:40:14
  Speaker 3: Man.
• 2:40:14
Speaker 1: Very good to do.
• 2:40:15
  Speaker 3: Thank you.
• 2:40:15
Speaker 1: Do it more often.
• 2:40:16
  Speaker 3: Man, I'm here.
• 2:40:18
Speaker 1: Okay. Let's do it. It's always fun.
• 2:40:20
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 2:40:21
Speaker 1: Tell everybody if they want to consume all your specials.
• 2:40:24
  All of it's on YouTube.
• 2:40:25
Speaker 3: All of it's on YouTube, but you can go to AliSadiq.com.
• 2:40:29
The new special out, My Father, is getting busy right now.
• 2:40:33
This is a great special. It really is.
• 2:40:39
Speaker 1: Where did you record this?
• 2:40:40
Speaker 3: That was in Detroit.
• 2:40:44
Speaker 1: Beautiful. Like I said, I love what you do. I
• 2:40:46
love the fact that you're so prolific and, you know,
• 2:40:49
that you've built this whole thing just on the hard work.
• 2:40:52
  So congratulations.
• 2:40:53
Speaker 3: Appreciate you. Thank you very much. Always good to see you. Bye.
