- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back to Inside the Data on Inside the Birds.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher and of course we've got our data
- 0:14Speaker 1: and analytics expert Sam Finkel, and as promised, we get
- 0:18Speaker 1: part two of a two part series on the Eagles.
- 0:20Speaker 1: In part one, we did the trade deadline recap and
- 0:24Speaker 1: went through all the players that the Eagles brought in
- 0:26Speaker 1: at the trade deadline. But Sam, part two the Eagles.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It feels like it's been like three weeks, but they
- 0:31Speaker 1: actually finally have a game Monday night against the Packers,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and it's a really good opportunity for us to just
- 0:37Speaker 1: look at the first half through an analytical ends. And
- 0:41Speaker 1: I know that there are four themes that really stuck
- 0:44Speaker 1: out that you want to do go through with the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Eagles and with respect to analytics and data. So let's
- 0:50Speaker 1: do it. Before I even bring up the charts, anything
- 0:53Speaker 1: that was like jumped out at you while you were
- 0:55Speaker 1: putting this together that really stood out, Yeah.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I just I want to take it actually a moment
- 1:00Speaker 2: to caveat the data for a little bit, just talk
- 1:03Speaker 2: about it because of the point of the season where
- 1:09Speaker 2: there are teams that have taken buys, there are teams
- 1:11Speaker 2: that haven't taken bys know that there is that factor
- 1:14Speaker 2: in and because we don't have the final numbers, I
- 1:18Speaker 2: compared this year to the twenty twenty four season, twenty
- 1:21Speaker 2: twenty three season, and the twenty twenty two season, and
- 1:24Speaker 2: I did so via relative ranking comparatively to every other team.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Oh okay, and that does a pretty good job at
- 1:31Speaker 2: capturing where they are relative to other teams. However, that
- 1:36Speaker 2: also leaves it susceptible that if there was just a
- 1:38Speaker 2: team there was a trend in the league that did
- 1:41Speaker 2: so well, it could impact that way. I did not
- 1:45Speaker 2: really see that, but I do think it's important to
- 1:48Speaker 2: say that why relative rankings are good and why they're bad.
- 1:51Speaker 2: They're good in this instance, when we have an incomplete
- 1:54Speaker 2: data set, you can see where they are relative to
- 1:56Speaker 2: other teams, and I think that's a pretty good indication.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But at the same time, if there was just a
- 2:02Speaker 2: really down year on defense, it would look different around
- 2:06Speaker 2: the league. I'm trying to say, so, I just want
- 2:09Speaker 2: to put that out there right away, all.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Right, and we'll continue to hammer that home as we
- 2:12Speaker 1: go through the charts that you put in, just to
- 2:14Speaker 1: explain it to people who are both listening or watching
- 2:18Speaker 1: on YouTube. All right, so why don't we go ahead
- 2:20Speaker 1: and take a look at what you put together for
- 2:24Speaker 1: us the themes of the twenty twenty five season so far,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and bam, here we go. So this is the Eagles
- 2:31Speaker 1: mid season breakdown, and we start with theme one, which
- 2:32Speaker 1: is the Eagles passing game.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and again, the people that are seeing this, you
- 2:40Speaker 2: have the number and then the twenty twenty five rank
- 2:43Speaker 2: and then a hard line just so we could talk
- 2:45Speaker 2: about that first, and then we can see compared to
- 2:49Speaker 2: the other seasons that I discussed. Okay, So in terms
- 2:52Speaker 2: of pass plays, the Eagles have run two hundred and
- 2:55Speaker 2: forty of them. That's fifty two point four percent of
- 2:58Speaker 2: their plays have been passes. And then their pass yards
- 3:02Speaker 2: per game is at one ninety two point eight and
- 3:05Speaker 2: their pass yards per play is at six point four,
- 3:09Speaker 2: where that ranks within the league. They're thirtieth in pass play,
- 3:13Speaker 2: their thirtieth in past percentage, and their twenty fifth in
- 3:18Speaker 2: pass yards per game and twelfth in past yards per play.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And so that's actually pretty encouraging in the fact that
- 3:25Speaker 2: they are thirtieth in the league in terms of volume,
- 3:29Speaker 2: yet in terms of their relative rate, how they produce
- 3:31Speaker 2: in it their twenty fifth and twelfth respectively.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say that that is a microcosm of
- 3:37Speaker 1: our what our eyes tell us about the Eagles offense,
- 3:40Speaker 1: that they don't throw the ball up, but they are
- 3:42Speaker 1: very they are shot play type of offense. So when
- 3:45Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts does put the ball in the air, it
- 3:47Speaker 1: tends to be deep and it tends to connect, as
- 3:51Speaker 1: evidence by being twelfth in yards per pass despite only
- 3:54Speaker 1: being the you know, thank thirtieth in past percentage.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and again you saw that last year where they
- 3:59Speaker 2: were thirty second in pass play in past percent and
- 4:02Speaker 2: yet they were twenty ninth in pass yards per game
- 4:05Speaker 2: and twelfth again in pass yards per play, and again
- 4:08Speaker 2: that theme kind of continues. Interestingly, the Eagles have passed
- 4:14Speaker 2: less and less pretty much throughout the course. I mean
- 4:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty four was the extreme example, but relative to
- 4:21Speaker 2: the other years and then their pass yards per game
- 4:24Speaker 2: has pretty much gotten worse each season. And same with
- 4:27Speaker 2: the pass yards play. But again that's a volume thing.
- 4:30Speaker 2: You would probably expect the pass yards per game to
- 4:32Speaker 2: go up, not necessarily the pass yards per play, going
- 4:36Speaker 2: from fourth to twelfth to twelfth to twelfth in pass
- 4:40Speaker 2: yards per play. You know, there was a regression from
- 4:43Speaker 2: that twenty twenty two year, but being consistent at twelfth
- 4:47Speaker 2: is not that concerning.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So correct, If anything, that we learned that they're consistent
- 4:51Speaker 1: with what they do and it's not like the yards disappeared.
- 4:53Speaker 1: They just went to the running game, especially last year
- 4:57Speaker 1: with with Sae Kwon Barkley.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Yeah, and actually I think that's maybe one of the
- 5:02Speaker 2: general themes is not to panic on this offense. And
- 5:06Speaker 2: I know they've gotten better, but I mean these numbers
- 5:10Speaker 2: show they've been pretty consistent, honestly, so at least in
- 5:13Speaker 2: this particular statistic, and we'll see it more as we
- 5:16Speaker 2: go through.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Okay, so now onto Jalen hurts the specific passing stats.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and I want to be clear about why there's
- 5:23Speaker 2: a discrepancy between you know, the attempts and pass plays. Again,
- 5:30Speaker 2: it includes scrambles and sacks in the first one, It
- 5:33Speaker 2: does not attempts in the second one. Attempts only include
- 5:36Speaker 2: what is thrown. So you see that two fifteen attempts
- 5:39Speaker 2: but two hundred and forty pass plays and you're like,
- 5:41Speaker 2: what why is that that way? Well, it includes other
- 5:44Speaker 2: plays that are where you did not actually throw the
- 5:46Speaker 2: ball like.
- 5:47Speaker 1: A great clarification, thank you. Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 2: So I just want to be clear whenever there is
- 5:52Speaker 2: a discrepancy, why that discrepancy exists.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And that is why there you go.
- 5:57Speaker 2: So you look, it's one hundred and fifty one at
- 5:59Speaker 2: two fifteen, which is a seventy point two percent completion percentage,
- 6:03Speaker 2: sixteen seventy seven yards, seven point eight yards per attempt.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And again that yards per attempt is going to be
- 6:09Speaker 2: different than the pass yards per play because sacks are
- 6:11Speaker 2: not factored in. There touchdowns, fifteen, interceptions one QBR one
- 6:18Speaker 2: fourteen point four. And what that relatively looks like around
- 6:22Speaker 2: the league. I mean, it's twenty third in completions, twenty
- 6:26Speaker 2: fifth in attempts, seventh in completion percentage, twenty second in yards,
- 6:31Speaker 2: ninth in yards per attempt, eleventh in touchdowns, second in
- 6:35Speaker 2: interceptions only to Justin Fields, who.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I was wondering who the only other quarterback could be
- 6:42Speaker 1: that didn't have an interception on as many attempts.
- 6:45Speaker 2: But justin Fields, you know, might not even have a
- 6:48Speaker 2: job soon who knows correct And then fifth in QBR.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So there there's that, and then how that looks relative
- 6:56Speaker 2: to the other ones. I mean again relative to the league.
- 7:00Speaker 2: This is the lowest completions and the lowest attempts, so
- 7:04Speaker 2: I mean that that's kind of respective to the league
- 7:07Speaker 2: at least, but it is his highest completion percentage, so
- 7:11Speaker 2: I mean those kind of do go hand in hand
- 7:13Speaker 2: to some extent. You know, it's the worst in terms
- 7:17Speaker 2: of yards relatives to the rest of the league passing yards.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It is the third best in yards per attempt of
- 7:24Speaker 2: those seasons, the best being that twenty twenty two season.
- 7:29Speaker 2: It is the best in terms of touchdowns. It is
- 7:33Speaker 2: the best in terms of interceptions, again, best being that
- 7:36Speaker 2: he's throwing the least, and it is the second best
- 7:40Speaker 2: in QBR, So I mean, yeah, and again when you
- 7:44Speaker 2: see that as the people that are looking the asterisks,
- 7:47Speaker 2: that means there were thirty three qualified passers. You see
- 7:50Speaker 2: the carrot is thirty five qualified passers just in that
- 7:54Speaker 2: league in that league year. And then if you don't
- 7:57Speaker 2: see it, it's it's thirty two.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I think Jalen hurts just watching him, as has
- 8:02Speaker 1: made more throws this year, more difficult throws than he
- 8:04Speaker 1: has in the past. And he's been he's always been
- 8:07Speaker 1: an accurate quarterback, but he's starting to use a little
- 8:10Speaker 1: more of the field. Not in every game. There are
- 8:12Speaker 1: certainly games where we went through the spray charts and
- 8:14Speaker 1: it showed that it was your typical you know, Jalen
- 8:17Speaker 1: Hurts throw outside the numbers game. But there have been
- 8:20Speaker 1: a couple of specifically against Minnesota and New York the
- 8:23Speaker 1: last two where you did see him make the kind
- 8:25Speaker 1: of throws that sometimes he did not want to make.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Well. Actually, this is fascinating. This is one thing I
- 8:30Speaker 2: found in the research is Jalen Hurts if you look
- 8:33Speaker 2: at that twenty twenty three year where he was thirtieth interceptions. Yeah,
- 8:37Speaker 2: I want you to pay really close attention to where
- 8:39Speaker 2: he is in sacks in that year versus every other
- 8:43Speaker 2: year in the next chart.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Okay, all right, and that would be twenty twenty three. Yes, Hey,
- 8:47Speaker 1: it's Jeff Mosher. And if you have a family and
- 8:49Speaker 1: kids at home, like me, you always want them to
- 8:52Speaker 1: be fully protected. That's why I'm thrilled to be a
- 8:55Speaker 1: simply safe customer. And our house is equipped with the
- 8:58Speaker 1: most technologically advanced a lot system you can get. If
- 9:01Speaker 1: you could actually stop someone from breaking into your home
- 9:03Speaker 1: before they got inside, why wouldn't you traditional security systems
- 9:07Speaker 1: only react after a break in, But simply safe is
- 9:11Speaker 1: different because it stops crimes before they happen. With active
- 9:15Speaker 1: guard outdoor protection, they're AI powered cameras detect threats while
- 9:19Speaker 1: they're still outside your home and they alert real security agents.
- 9:23Speaker 1: These agents take action while the intruder is still outside
- 9:27Speaker 1: and confront the intruder to let them know they're being
- 9:29Speaker 1: watched on camera and police is on the way. And
- 9:32Speaker 1: that's how you stop a crime before it's committed. There's
- 9:35Speaker 1: no long term contracts or hidden fees. You can cancel
- 9:38Speaker 1: any time, and it comes with a sixty day money
- 9:41Speaker 1: back guarantee. Try it and see the difference for yourself.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Do not miss out on simply Safe's biggest sale of
- 9:47Speaker 1: the year, sixty percent off. Our listeners get sixty percent
- 9:51Speaker 1: off a simply Safe home security system at simplysafe dot
- 9:55Speaker 1: com slash bird. A's simplysafe dot com slash bird. Right,
- 10:00Speaker 1: so these are now the offensive basic pressure stats, meaning
- 10:04Speaker 1: the offense seeing pressure from the defense.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And then let's just point this out right now because
- 10:10Speaker 2: we're already here.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you already brought it up.
- 10:13Speaker 2: The best year that they had by far in Sacks
- 10:15Speaker 2: was eleventh. But when you go up, he had thirty.
- 10:19Speaker 2: He was thirtieth in interceptions, meaning he threw the thirtieth most interception.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I guess he threw he really that was the thirty two.
- 10:26Speaker 2: So he was this, you know, that's not good. And
- 10:29Speaker 2: so what that tells me is these sacks that Jalen
- 10:32Speaker 2: Hurts is taking is the result of not throwing turning
- 10:36Speaker 2: the ball over. He really learned that I can just
- 10:40Speaker 2: take a sack here. I don't have to force the ball.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I admitt it. No one would ever teach or coach that,
- 10:45Speaker 1: because it's really hard to hold on to the ball
- 10:48Speaker 1: the more you get sacked. But he does have a
- 10:51Speaker 1: rare trait or ability to do that, I would agree.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I just never saw it so jarring. I mean, we've
- 10:57Speaker 2: talked about it, but it's so jarring that they went
- 11:00Speaker 2: from you know, third to thirtieth in interceptions and the
- 11:03Speaker 2: thirtieth to fourth to second. Right, But then you look
- 11:08Speaker 2: at the sack numbers that we have right in front
- 11:10Speaker 2: of us, and you know, there were eleventh in sacks
- 11:13Speaker 2: and now they're twentieth and twenty fifth. So he's taken
- 11:16Speaker 2: more sacks, but he's not throwing interceptions, and I think
- 11:19Speaker 2: you ultimately would take the negative plays over, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 2: the turnover plays.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Sure. Sure.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I just thought that was so interesting when I was
- 11:27Speaker 2: going through this, and it makes sense and you do
- 11:29Speaker 2: see it, I mean, but really see it.
- 11:31Speaker 1: And that's what that's really what makes him so unique
- 11:34Speaker 1: and the offense so unique because you like, again, no
- 11:36Speaker 1: coach would ever coach that, right. Nobody would ever say
- 11:40Speaker 1: we want to have this many sacks. And I'm not
- 11:44Speaker 1: saying that they do want it, but they would probably
- 11:46Speaker 1: tell you, if you're getting sacked at the higher rate,
- 11:50Speaker 1: then you're going to turn the ball over at the
- 11:51Speaker 1: higher rate, whereas the Eagles has been the opposite. He
- 11:56Speaker 1: had the most turnovers on his lowest sack rate. So again,
- 12:00Speaker 1: that that's what makes them very unique.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but I just thought that was worth mentioning. Now,
- 12:04Speaker 2: let's get into the actual pressure statistics. One hundred and
- 12:08Speaker 2: two pressures thirty eight point nine percent of the time,
- 12:12Speaker 2: twenty five sacks ten point four five percent of the time,
- 12:16Speaker 2: time to throw three point h one, time to pressure
- 12:19Speaker 2: two point eight four And how that looks across the league.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Sixteenth in pressure but twenty seventh in pressure rate. Why
- 12:31Speaker 2: that's different is because the Eagles are running less plays
- 12:34Speaker 2: than other teams, but it's a higher percentage that they
- 12:38Speaker 2: are being pressured. You look at sacks, it's twenty fifth,
- 12:42Speaker 2: but the percentage is twenty eighth, which means that kind
- 12:46Speaker 2: of the opposite there, even though they're getting sacked. I
- 12:49Speaker 2: mean again, it's it's not really doub they are having
- 12:51Speaker 2: a lower volume. So it's that's really why that number
- 12:55Speaker 2: is different. Teams that have more you know, pass plays
- 12:58Speaker 2: and get you know, higher sacks or I guess less.
- 13:02Speaker 2: It's just a percentage team at that point. But that's
- 13:05Speaker 2: second in time to throw and fourth in time to pressure,
- 13:08Speaker 2: and that time to throw is a Jalen hurtstat. Time
- 13:10Speaker 2: to pressure is the offensive line stat. You typically the
- 13:14Speaker 2: better time to pressure means that your offensive line is
- 13:18Speaker 2: holding up really well, and I think that's what we've
- 13:20Speaker 2: seen it, particularly in past protection they've done a good job.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Time to throw just is just, on average, how long
- 13:27Speaker 2: does the quarterback hold onto the ball. And that's where
- 13:29Speaker 2: we I created that net time before pressure stat which
- 13:33Speaker 2: just appracts the two because it says how long does
- 13:36Speaker 2: the quarterback hold the ball while still being pressured Like
- 13:40Speaker 2: typically for a pocket passer, you want that number to
- 13:43Speaker 2: not be negative. With an extender like Mahomes or even
- 13:48Speaker 2: Jalen to this extent, you're okay with a negative number.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I think anything over negative zero point two toy five
- 13:55Speaker 2: is a problem. But you know, we'll get into that
- 13:58Speaker 2: in a minute. But if you look at where that's
- 14:01Speaker 2: been the rest of the league, every you know, everything's
- 14:04Speaker 2: kind of consistent with color wise, like where they fall
- 14:08Speaker 2: within the league. Basically, pressure went from twenty twenty two
- 14:13Speaker 2: to twenty twenty five, twelfth, twenty second, tenth, sixteenth, but
- 14:17Speaker 2: percentage pretty similar. Sacks went from twentieth eleventh to twentieth
- 14:23Speaker 2: twenty fifth, and then that time to time to throw
- 14:28Speaker 2: was pretty much consistently around the second and third in
- 14:30Speaker 2: the league, except for twenty twenty two, which was eighteenth,
- 14:34Speaker 2: which means that all that means is that Jalen hurts
- 14:37Speaker 2: relative to the rest of the league. Was getting the
- 14:39Speaker 2: ball out, you know at a league at like the
- 14:43Speaker 2: middle of the league a little bit faster, but now
- 14:47Speaker 2: he holds onto the ball longer. But the offensive line's
- 14:50Speaker 2: been pretty consistent in the top ten, top seven as far.
- 14:53Speaker 1: As time to pressure right right, which sort of makes
- 14:56Speaker 1: the pressure rate thing kind of screwy, but it's I
- 14:59Speaker 1: get it. Yeah, all right, well go ahead.
- 15:04Speaker 2: That's interesting because the time to pressure, because he's holding
- 15:08Speaker 2: the ball longer than the time to pressure. That's why
- 15:10Speaker 2: the pressure rate is that way.
- 15:12Speaker 1: That that makes no.
- 15:13Speaker 2: If there if they had Tanner McKee in which, again
- 15:17Speaker 2: not trying to start controversy, Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I want to make that explicit. But if you had
- 15:22Speaker 2: a pocket passer, you'd want that number to be before
- 15:26Speaker 2: that two point eighty four, That right, and then the
- 15:29Speaker 2: pressure rate wouldn't be what it was.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Makes sense? All right, Let's move on to some of
- 15:35Speaker 1: the advanced passing stats. Finish off part one here.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Yeah, one of Jalen hurts the signature stats is plus
- 15:44Speaker 2: is the CPOE, which is at plus seven point six percent,
- 15:47Speaker 2: which he led the league in in twenty twenty four,
- 15:50Speaker 2: right third this year. And there were two guys ahead
- 15:53Speaker 2: of him, and I remember one. I'm not remembering the other.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Oh yes, I remember both. You want to.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Guess uh completion percentage over expectation? And how about Baker Mayfield,
- 16:01Speaker 1: not Baker Mayfield, how about.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Drake may yep? It was he won or two Drake
- 16:08Speaker 2: may I think is one and.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I'll say to Mahmes, I just tell you sure it's
- 16:18Speaker 1: Sam Darnel. Oh of course it's yes, that makes a
- 16:22Speaker 1: lot of sense. Actually, yeah, he has been on a
- 16:25Speaker 1: heater with not you know man and they just added
- 16:28Speaker 1: rashidja heat. That's that was really good. The Seahawks could
- 16:31Speaker 1: be really good. They really could be good.
- 16:33Speaker 2: They could be trouble for sure.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah, they could be trouble for anybody. But but yeah,
- 16:37Speaker 1: so yeah, Hurts is always annually on among the high end,
- 16:40Speaker 1: if not leading the league and cpo E.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, let's just take a second to talk about that.
- 16:44Speaker 2: What that actually means. Yeah, basically, they have an algorithm
- 16:48Speaker 2: that says, like, what is the expected UH completion percentage? Right,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and then how do you perform relative to what is
- 16:55Speaker 2: expected of you? From that? You know that formula, right,
- 16:59Speaker 2: and so you just take your completion percentage and subtract
- 17:02Speaker 2: it from the expectation. If your completion percentage higher than
- 17:06Speaker 2: what's expected of you, then your completion percentage is over
- 17:09Speaker 2: expectation and you have a positive number. It means you're
- 17:13Speaker 2: making throws that you're not necessarily expected to make. And
- 17:16Speaker 2: that speaks to you as a quarterback and your placement
- 17:19Speaker 2: and your decision making, but it also speaks to your receivers.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Can they make contested catches that are not expected to
- 17:24Speaker 2: be caught? And the Eagles receivers do it better than
- 17:27Speaker 2: pretty much anybody else.
- 17:28Speaker 1: In the league. So I see this number as a
- 17:30Speaker 1: hybrid of Jalen Hurts' ability to make the to routinely
- 17:36Speaker 1: make the low percentage throw way down the field outside
- 17:40Speaker 1: the numbers, you know, it's Aj Brown to DeVante Smith.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And then a combination of that and what we've seen
- 17:46Speaker 1: lately from DeVante especially just going up and get them
- 17:48Speaker 1: getting the ball contested catches.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Absolutely couldn't set it better myself. And then their EPA
- 17:52Speaker 2: per drop back is different than their passing EPA because
- 17:56Speaker 2: EPA per drop back includes quarterback scrambles, right, So that's
- 17:59Speaker 2: why the number is plus zero points zero five when
- 18:02Speaker 2: the passing EPA is plus zero point zero one. So
- 18:05Speaker 2: what that means is Hurts is really adding value as
- 18:09Speaker 2: a scrambler this year. And then that average separation three
- 18:13Speaker 2: point five, which is actually the best average separation they've
- 18:15Speaker 2: had under this offense.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Oh, that's really interesting.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I was a little bit surprised by that one, but
- 18:20Speaker 2: pretty cool.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I mean far and away. I mean, you have twenty third,
- 18:23Speaker 1: twenty ninth, twenty fifth in the league, and now they're
- 18:25Speaker 1: twelfth in the league. That's because we did do an
- 18:28Speaker 1: episode on AJ Brown where his separation was down a
- 18:31Speaker 1: little bit. So I guess everybody else is, you know,
- 18:34Speaker 1: maybe with Dallas. Goddard's had some big games, absolutely had
- 18:38Speaker 1: some big games as well.
- 18:40Speaker 2: And that that absolutely factors in. Just just to give
- 18:45Speaker 2: an idea of what where they were last year, just
- 18:49Speaker 2: for example and why again, relative stats are important. The
- 18:55Speaker 2: Eagles were last year at three point three and so
- 19:05Speaker 2: this the difference between three point three to three point five,
- 19:08Speaker 2: that point two difference was twenty fifth to twelve. So
- 19:11Speaker 2: I just you to paint that out that that's kind
- 19:13Speaker 2: of how that works. But yeah, I mean, listen, everything
- 19:19Speaker 2: looks pretty good here. The EPA per dropback and passing
- 19:23Speaker 2: EPA kind of lower than where it's been in the
- 19:26Speaker 2: past couple of years for whatever we and again we've
- 19:29Speaker 2: talked about, you know, sequencing and putting themselves in bad positions. Yeah,
- 19:34Speaker 2: so I think that's good. It's on it's trending upwards
- 19:38Speaker 2: and and should kind of fix itself regress to the
- 19:41Speaker 2: mean as the season progresses.
- 19:44Speaker 1: All right, let's go on to the rushing offense theme
- 19:47Speaker 1: number two here. Yes, I think we're I think everybody's
- 19:51Speaker 1: prepared for like a major aggression in twenty twenty five
- 19:55Speaker 1: stats compared to the last years.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's the thing, like, if you look at
- 19:59Speaker 2: the basic statistics, it is worse, yep. And then you
- 20:04Speaker 2: look at the advanced statistics and honestly, it's not as
- 20:07Speaker 2: bad as you think. But let's let's talk about the
- 20:11Speaker 2: basic statistics first. Okay, They've run two hundred eighteen plays,
- 20:15Speaker 2: which is forty seven point six percent of their plays
- 20:18Speaker 2: as running. They average one hundred and eleven point six
- 20:21Speaker 2: rushing yards per game, four point one rush yards per play,
- 20:25Speaker 2: and nine touchdowns. That's eighteenth, third, nineteenth, twentieth, and tenth,
- 20:31Speaker 2: respectively for each statistic. And those are the run plays.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Is the is the worst it's been since twenty twenty two.
- 20:42Speaker 2: The run percentage is actually not, it's it's only less
- 20:47Speaker 2: than relative to the league, only less than the twenty
- 20:49Speaker 2: twenty four year. Their rush yards per game is the
- 20:53Speaker 2: lowest relative to the league. Their rush yards per play
- 20:57Speaker 2: is the lowest relative to everyone else in the league. Yeah,
- 21:01Speaker 2: same with the touchdowns. So there are struggling based on
- 21:04Speaker 2: the basics distics. But when you look at these advanced metrics,
- 21:07Speaker 2: I mean the EPA per rush is the expected points
- 21:10Speaker 2: added per rush is plus zero point zero six, which
- 21:14Speaker 2: is fifth in the league. And honestly, it's not that
- 21:17Speaker 2: far from where they've been. I mean they were third
- 21:19Speaker 2: last year, fourth the year before and first year before that.
- 21:24Speaker 2: And then you look at the rushing yards over expectation,
- 21:26Speaker 2: which is the same as the completion yard completion percentage
- 21:29Speaker 2: over expectation. Again, there's a formula that says how much
- 21:31Speaker 2: you're expected to get. What is your number subtracted from
- 21:35Speaker 2: what that number is, and anything positive means you were
- 21:38Speaker 2: rushing more than expected second this year. They were second
- 21:42Speaker 2: last year, where they had an incredible defense, I mean
- 21:45Speaker 2: incredible rushing attack. Now, now here's where we get interesting.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Their success percentage and forty three point one is thirteenth
- 21:53Speaker 2: in the league. Last year they were only eleven. So
- 21:55Speaker 2: the success of percentage is actually not an issue. What
- 21:59Speaker 2: is an issue is the stuff percentage. They're getting stuffed
- 22:02Speaker 2: at a significantly higher clip than they have been in
- 22:05Speaker 2: the past four years of this offense.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough, parking, traffic,
- 22:12Speaker 1: long lines, We've all been there, But when it comes
- 22:14Speaker 1: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 22:19Speaker 1: the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,
- 22:23Speaker 1: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 22:26Speaker 1: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 22:35Speaker 1: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
- 22:38Speaker 1: walk in. Plus, they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 22:42Speaker 1: at the fairest prices, So whether you're stocking up for
- 22:45Speaker 1: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win,
- 22:49Speaker 1: you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
- 22:53Speaker 1: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 22:57Speaker 1: service members, and healthcare pros canned in Apothecary. Top quality cannabis,
- 23:02Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 23:06Speaker 1: one and up. That's crazy. So what the stats say
- 23:09Speaker 1: is the data says here is when the Eagles when
- 23:12Speaker 1: Sigmond Barkley in particular, isn't getting hit immediately behind the
- 23:16Speaker 1: line of scrimmage by three guys, then his his carriers
- 23:19Speaker 1: have been decent, maybe not as explosive as years past,
- 23:22Speaker 1: but good enough to have a positive success rate consistent
- 23:26Speaker 1: with what they were last year. But he's just getting
- 23:28Speaker 1: hit so many times behind the line of scrimmage that
- 23:32Speaker 1: it is, or getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage
- 23:34Speaker 1: behind the line of scrimmage, that it's really influencing where the
- 23:37Speaker 1: other data is.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Sure, Now, if we took Jalen Hurts scrambles out of here,
- 23:42Speaker 2: because they do count as EPA per rush, right, these
- 23:45Speaker 2: numbers probably would be significantly worse. Yeah, I do think
- 23:49Speaker 2: Hurts is carrying a lot of this excess value and
- 23:51Speaker 2: bringing it closer to what it's been.
- 23:53Speaker 1: That makes sense.
- 23:54Speaker 2: But to be honest with you, that stuff percentage is
- 23:56Speaker 2: just it's a problem. The run blocking has has been
- 24:00Speaker 2: a problem. It just has been this year.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Oh my god, I'm actually surprised they were even
- 24:05Speaker 1: seventeenth last year in stuff percentage. I guess that's the
- 24:08Speaker 1: whole home run feast of famine. Nature of the way
- 24:12Speaker 1: Saquon operates is that even last year, compared to the league,
- 24:15Speaker 1: he was middle of the pack as far as getting stuffed.
- 24:18Speaker 1: But obviously when he was not stuffed, he was making
- 24:21Speaker 1: magic happen.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and when he did have a successful run, it
- 24:25Speaker 2: was a home run yeesh, which we haven't seen that
- 24:28Speaker 2: many of this year.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Notably in the last game, there.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Was one correct which I did.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I did tweet before the game that I thought it
- 24:37Speaker 2: would be Saquon's bounce back game.
- 24:39Speaker 1: You know, I said that, I said he was my
- 24:40Speaker 1: player of the game. But I can't like take because
- 24:42Speaker 1: I felt like each of the four weeks I was like,
- 24:45Speaker 1: this is gonna be the Saquon game, this is gonna
- 24:46Speaker 1: be So it finally happened for me, but I don't
- 24:49Speaker 1: feel like it made me look that much better.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing, Like, I I felt pretty confidently
- 24:54Speaker 2: that it just it was if it was going to happen,
- 24:57Speaker 2: it was happening in that game for just a bunch
- 24:59Speaker 2: of reasons. Then I was looking through the data and
- 25:01Speaker 2: I was like, I actually probably could have made a
- 25:03Speaker 2: really good case for this because the Giants do have
- 25:05Speaker 2: a really strong defensive line. Yeah, they're really good at
- 25:08Speaker 2: pass defense. You look at their rush defense, They're not
- 25:11Speaker 2: really that good, correct, So, I mean I could have
- 25:15Speaker 2: I think I said in the tweet it was just
- 25:16Speaker 2: the vibes.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Pick.
- 25:19Speaker 2: If I had more time to look into it, I
- 25:21Speaker 2: would have said, no, no, this is not just vibes.
- 25:23Speaker 2: This is you. Yeah, you know I love the numbers.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Hump yourself up a little more there. All right, let's
- 25:30Speaker 1: look at Eagles pass defense theme number three, the kind
- 25:35Speaker 1: of all over the map with some of this here.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it definitely is. So, I mean, because that twenty
- 25:41Speaker 2: twenty three season was horrendous, particularly and the backside, particularly
- 25:46Speaker 2: on defense of the season. I mean, yes, two and
- 25:50Speaker 2: eighty four pass plays, fifty six point seven their pass
- 25:54Speaker 2: yards per game. Again we talked about in the last
- 25:58Speaker 2: part of this series with the trade two hundred and
- 26:00Speaker 2: fifteen point nine pass yards for play, six point one
- 26:04Speaker 2: pass touchdowns. Eight.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:06Speaker 2: You look at these numbers. Where they are. You know,
- 26:09Speaker 2: they're twenty second in pass plays faced, eighteenth in past percentage,
- 26:14Speaker 2: seventeenth in passyards per game allowed, fourteenth in pass yards
- 26:18Speaker 2: per play, and second in past touchdowns.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Does that means they've allowed the second most or second
- 26:24Speaker 1: fewest passing touchdowns.
- 26:26Speaker 2: So anytime it's framed in this context, it would be
- 26:29Speaker 2: the better. So they allowed the second the fewest.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why I figured, I just wanted to clarify.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yes, it's an important clarification. Anytime that it's you know, defense,
- 26:40Speaker 2: I'm going to put it in that context, so it
- 26:42Speaker 2: would be what's what's best, what's you know?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:46Speaker 2: That's why I also hate the volume statistics, because how
- 26:48Speaker 2: do you determine what's best. It's just the most sure
- 26:50Speaker 2: for volume statistics, at least like pass plays in past percentage,
- 26:54Speaker 2: but the rest will be framed as in like the best.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Right, And that's why those those stats on yards playing
- 27:00Speaker 1: yards per game are probably the most glaring because they
- 27:02Speaker 1: went from being number one overall last year and both
- 27:05Speaker 1: to now middle of the pack, which shows the drop off.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that drop off honestly is mostly
- 27:11Speaker 2: due to pressure or the inability to convert pressure into sacks,
- 27:18Speaker 2: because they are still getting We'll talk about pressure in
- 27:21Speaker 2: a second, but they basically they haven't been able to
- 27:25Speaker 2: get as many sacks as they did in the past,
- 27:29Speaker 2: and it's showing, you know, you can blame it a
- 27:32Speaker 2: little bit on that outside corner position. Opposite of Quinnjon Mitchell.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And that's true. But you know, sacks fix everything they do,
- 27:41Speaker 2: so and they just haven't been getting them.
- 27:43Speaker 1: So right, Wow, everybody remembers that twenty twenty three defense,
- 27:47Speaker 1: you know, last in yards per game allowed, sixteenth in
- 27:51Speaker 1: yards for player, which means they were just getting they
- 27:53Speaker 1: were getting killed death by a thousand cuts type of losing.
- 27:57Speaker 1: People were just bing bang, bing in them all all
- 28:01Speaker 1: over the field in that second half. Yeah.
- 28:03Speaker 2: And then that's why you get an adult like Vic
- 28:05Speaker 2: Fango in the room and you know, you went from
- 28:07Speaker 2: thirty first and fast yards per game to first that's.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Amazing, what a turnaround, so crazy, and now you're seventeenth,
- 28:13Speaker 1: so it's, uh, you know, there's some work to be done.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and that they're working for sure.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. All right. So you you
- 28:20Speaker 1: mentioned we'll get into defensive pressure stats.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so one hundred and five pressure, which is thirty
- 28:27Speaker 2: four point four percent of that you know plays right,
- 28:33Speaker 2: sack sixteen sack percent five point.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Two that's the bigger number, the percentage, So that's yeah,
- 28:41Speaker 1: five point two percentage.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you look at the edge and I'm
- 28:46Speaker 2: trying to remember how many actually contributed to. So there's
- 28:50Speaker 2: two four, there's been five sacks off the edge of
- 28:53Speaker 2: that sixteen. Huh, So that's not good, really not good,
- 28:59Speaker 2: not at all because you typically get sacks from the edge,
- 29:03Speaker 2: not from the interior. So just want to be super
- 29:06Speaker 2: clear on that. And then time to throw again is
- 29:09Speaker 2: a quarterback stat. It's kind of independent of the offensive
- 29:13Speaker 2: line to some extent. I mean it's not because everything
- 29:16Speaker 2: is tied together, but it's more of a quarterback stat,
- 29:19Speaker 2: while time to pressure is more of an offensive line stat,
- 29:22Speaker 2: and in this case a defensive line stat. So on average,
- 29:26Speaker 2: you know the quarterbacks against them are throwing at two
- 29:30Speaker 2: point eight five and they are pressuring in two point
- 29:33Speaker 2: five to eight. But just because your pressure doesn't mean
- 29:36Speaker 2: you're getting a sack. And as we talked about, and
- 29:39Speaker 2: their get off is zero point eighty seven on average.
- 29:43Speaker 2: And again, if you're facing a pocket passer, you want
- 29:47Speaker 2: time to throw to be greater than time to pressure.
- 29:51Speaker 2: It just means that you know they're holding onto the
- 29:53Speaker 2: ball while still being pressure and you want that. However,
- 29:56Speaker 2: when you're facing extenders such as Patrick Mahome, you know
- 30:02Speaker 2: they purposefully will increase that time to throw even if
- 30:06Speaker 2: they're being pressured or you know, if there's some semblance
- 30:09Speaker 2: of pressure. So it depends on what quarterback you play,
- 30:13Speaker 2: really it does. It's such a dependent stat So, yeah,
- 30:17Speaker 2: there's that anything on these numbers relative that are interesting.
- 30:23Speaker 2: The time to throw is twenty sixth and it was third,
- 30:28Speaker 2: second and fifth before. You know, quarterbacks are holding the
- 30:32Speaker 2: ball a lot longer.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and then obviously you know this team is
- 30:37Speaker 1: built on its front four. I mean, I know Quinyon
- 30:39Speaker 1: is great, and obviously Cooper de Jean's very good, and
- 30:42Speaker 1: they have their best secondary meeting last year. This year,
- 30:47Speaker 1: you know, they have their best collection of secondary talent
- 30:49Speaker 1: in quite some time. But when you go from fourteenth
- 30:53Speaker 1: last year in sack percentage to twenty fourth and at
- 30:57Speaker 1: one point you were number one many years ago when
- 30:59Speaker 1: they set that record, it just shows you where they've
- 31:01Speaker 1: where they've where they are at with their with their
- 31:05Speaker 1: front floor rush. It's just it has it's it's lacked
- 31:07Speaker 1: a little bit without Josh Sweat and Milton Williams and
- 31:11Speaker 1: you know in the past it was Hassan Radi I
- 31:13Speaker 1: had they had some some true killers and they're still
- 31:15Speaker 1: waiting to see that.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think the Phillips trade will fix some
- 31:19Speaker 2: of it, not all of it, some of it it
- 31:21Speaker 2: should help significantly. And then interestingly, the get off has
- 31:26Speaker 2: been slower.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, you know that's a good point because I
- 31:30Speaker 1: think when we did the when you compare Jal and
- 31:32Speaker 1: Phillips to the others like Ouch and Hunt, the get
- 31:37Speaker 1: off was right around in that point eight point, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 1: eight point. I think that everybody was in there at
- 31:43Speaker 1: some point. It made me realize, like, there isn't someone
- 31:46Speaker 1: who just has elite get off in the in the group,
- 31:51Speaker 1: right absolutely. Hey, I still like a good night out,
- 31:55Speaker 1: but I'm not always in the mood to drink. And

- 33:23Speaker 1: All right, let's see past defense advanced stats.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Yeah two, they're passing EPA negative zero point zero nine,
- 33:34Speaker 2: which is tenth in the league. They were leading the
- 33:36Speaker 2: statistic for a long time, I think until Week four,
- 33:42Speaker 2: leading the statistic to.
- 33:43Speaker 1: That second half of the Broncos game.
- 33:46Speaker 2: It was either the Broncos or the Buccaneers. I don't
- 33:48Speaker 2: remember which one it was, but but would make sense that.
- 33:50Speaker 1: They were back to back. So yeah, it would make sense,
- 33:54Speaker 1: you know what.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I think they were leading it in the Buccaneers and
- 33:57Speaker 2: then they lost it in the and that after It
- 33:59Speaker 2: makes sense either way. Their separation. They're allowing the least
- 34:03Speaker 2: separation in the league right now.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Interesting, really interesting.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Yeah, especially with the issues at that second cornerback position.
- 34:10Speaker 2: But that's why I really think it's the pressure that's
- 34:13Speaker 2: the issue, right, And and that's why you could put
- 34:16Speaker 2: Dry or Alexander out there, uh, and you're not go
- 34:19Speaker 2: You're gonna have the same problems until you fix the pressure.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I think the Phillips trade, I mean not just because
- 34:25Speaker 2: he's the bigger player, but he has a chance to
- 34:27Speaker 2: be more impactful because, like I said, pressure and sacks
- 34:31Speaker 2: fix everything, you know, it really does. So you make
- 34:35Speaker 2: your secondary look a lot better if you can get
- 34:37Speaker 2: to the quarterback.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Average separation is per target.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Right, that's what then you're right, it is per target.
- 34:42Speaker 1: I also think that there's it's a little it's weird
- 34:44Speaker 1: because the last two games, which you know, two of
- 34:46Speaker 1: eight is a quarter of the season. For whatever reason,
- 34:49Speaker 1: Jackson Dart and Carson Wentz had a real either a
- 34:53Speaker 1: blind spot or they just did not go after the corner,
- 34:57Speaker 1: the second cornerback spot the way and we you guys
- 35:00Speaker 1: did earlier in the week. And so I wonder, I
- 35:03Speaker 1: think that this could be skewed a little bit, you know.
- 35:05Speaker 2: When you're sure, yeah, for sure, I mean it's certainly.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, yeah, that that's a really good point.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Thank you for bringing that up.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Sure, Eagles rush defense will finish it out here. What
- 35:17Speaker 1: we've seen from the first eight weeks of the year
- 35:19Speaker 1: compared to some years past here kind of interesting the
- 35:23Speaker 1: way they're They're middle of the pack, and you expect
- 35:26Speaker 1: this team to be a little bit better and more
- 35:27Speaker 1: stout upfront.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean again, last year kind of feels like
- 35:32Speaker 2: the gold standard. Yeah, in terms of a lot of things.
- 35:35Speaker 2: I mean, it's hard not to be when you win
- 35:37Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, uh, just to even just think that way.
- 35:40Speaker 2: But I mean the numbers really do support that. Last
- 35:42Speaker 2: year's team was just pretty good all around in all
- 35:45Speaker 2: these areas. I mean truly, even in the the advanced
- 35:50Speaker 2: statistics support it too. So you'll see.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they've gone from ten last year and
- 35:56Speaker 1: rushing year. These are the stats that really to be mad, right,
- 35:59Speaker 1: the rush yards per game they went from tenth last
- 36:01Speaker 1: year to nineteenth this year, and then rush yards for
- 36:05Speaker 1: play ninth last year to nineteenth this year. They've just
- 36:10Speaker 1: it's and again they're not like bottom five, but they're
- 36:12Speaker 1: just a little looser in an area that's always been
- 36:16Speaker 1: very big for them. To get into those pass rush situations,
- 36:19Speaker 1: you've got to be able to stop the run and
- 36:21Speaker 1: put them in unfavorable down in distant situations, which they
- 36:24Speaker 1: the Eagles have not done as much this year.
- 36:26Speaker 2: I mean we talked about it on the third down analysis, right,
- 36:29Speaker 2: I mean they're facing easier third downs than the Eagles are.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Their opponents are facing easier third downs, and we do
- 36:36Speaker 2: that by having a successful run game or successful run
- 36:39Speaker 2: defense in that regard.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Sure, sure so, certainly something that also might get because
- 36:45Speaker 1: again they were light on the edges, not just in
- 36:47Speaker 1: numbers but in actual bulk. And Joe Phillips is a
- 36:50Speaker 1: bigger guy, so maybe he can have an impact there
- 36:53Speaker 1: as well. Just in the run defense.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yep, and you know that stuff percentage again keeps coming up.
- 36:59Speaker 2: I mean they're thirty first in stuff percentage. They got
- 37:02Speaker 2: stuff to run more. They got it. They gotta stuff
- 37:04Speaker 2: to run more.
- 37:04Speaker 1: So wow, they are what. They are getting stuffed on
- 37:07Speaker 1: offense at a high rate and not stuffing the when
- 37:11Speaker 1: they're on defense the opposing ballcarriers at a high rate. Yeah.
- 37:15Speaker 2: And the Eagles pride themselves on the trenches right and
- 37:18Speaker 2: in pass protection that the offensive line has been doing well,
- 37:22Speaker 2: and run blocking they have not, and then in run
- 37:25Speaker 2: stopping they've not.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Yeah, these are mature hikes from last year. I mean
- 37:29Speaker 1: epa per rush from fifth to nineteenth and then rushing
- 37:33Speaker 1: yards over expectation from seventh to eighteenth. That's that's big.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is. They they are missing Milton Williams
- 37:40Speaker 2: and Josh Wett.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, Greg Kosso made a really good point
- 37:44Speaker 1: and thanks for that. That was really great data compilation.
- 37:47Speaker 1: He Milton Williams. Not only did they miss him as
- 37:49Speaker 1: a pass rusher, but he was a very big physical
- 37:52Speaker 1: presence next to Jalen Carter on that line. Joemo is
- 37:55Speaker 1: a good pass rusher, but he's built differently. He's long armed,
- 37:59Speaker 1: he's he's quick to the quarterback. He may have more
- 38:02Speaker 1: natural pass rushing skills than Milton Williams did, but he
- 38:06Speaker 1: is not the point of attack type of player that
- 38:10Speaker 1: Milton Williams really emerged to over the last few years.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Absolutely, I think that's a really good point. I'm glad
- 38:16Speaker 2: Greg brought that up because it makes a lot of sense,
- 38:18Speaker 2: and you see it in both the numbers and on
- 38:20Speaker 2: the film.
- 38:21Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, and that makes why it Also, I
- 38:24Speaker 1: think earlier in the year, not as much lately Lot
- 38:27Speaker 1: to City coming out, but Jordan Davis was playing more
- 38:31Speaker 1: in the nickel next to Carter in certain down and
- 38:35Speaker 1: distances because I think they wanted to have a little
- 38:37Speaker 1: bit more beef against the run, like on those third
- 38:39Speaker 1: and mediums and things like that. You know, absolutely, I'm
- 38:42Speaker 1: stronger on at the point of attack, So therefore he
- 38:44Speaker 1: had I think Jordan's had three sacks this year already. Yeah,
- 38:47Speaker 1: I know how many of them came in nickel, but
- 38:49Speaker 1: I know he was playing in the four man front
- 38:51Speaker 1: more this year than last year. Now it's he was,
- 38:54Speaker 1: it's at the start of the year. It seems like
- 38:56Speaker 1: it went back to being more joemo as the year
- 38:59Speaker 1: was going on. See what that's like coming out of
- 39:02Speaker 1: the buy. Absolutely well, great stuff, Sam, thank you. That
- 39:06Speaker 1: was a good synopsis of the first half. I think
- 39:09Speaker 1: we have a really good idea of where the Eagle
- 39:11Speaker 1: has been very efficient and where they've been deficient, and
- 39:14Speaker 1: what they need to work on as they come out
- 39:16Speaker 1: of the buy and face the Packers.
- 39:18Speaker 2: What's your biggest takeaway from the numbers.
- 39:20Speaker 1: I was surprised by the rushing defense stats, honestly, and
- 39:23Speaker 1: because I think that while rush defense isn't as big
- 39:26Speaker 1: as say sacks or pass coverage, I think it goes
- 39:30Speaker 1: back to what we said about you need to get
- 39:33Speaker 1: the offense, the opposing offense in less favorable down in distances,
- 39:37Speaker 1: so there's a trickle down impact. If you're better against
- 39:40Speaker 1: the run and your offenses that you're facing are seeing
- 39:43Speaker 1: more second and nine, third and seven, that will help
- 39:47Speaker 1: your pass rushing coverage because it puts them in an
- 39:50Speaker 1: ability and a position where they can tee off a
- 39:53Speaker 1: little bit easier, and it gives VIC a little bit
- 39:55Speaker 1: more of a selection of what he can do on
- 39:58Speaker 1: third down. But if you're allowing you know, four to
- 40:01Speaker 1: five yards on that first down, and you've got a
- 40:03Speaker 1: lot of second mediums for the offense, that sets up
- 40:06Speaker 1: them to be able to do play action to run
- 40:08Speaker 1: to pay. I mean, it gives them a lot more
- 40:10Speaker 1: options offensively.
- 40:12Speaker 2: And I'm continuing to track those third down statistics for
- 40:16Speaker 2: sequencing should they become relevant again. Hopefully it'll normalize a
- 40:20Speaker 2: little bit aggrest to the mean and you'll see something more,
- 40:23Speaker 2: you know, like what we did in twenty twenty four.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Yeah, so defense definitely getting stopping the run. But on
- 40:29Speaker 1: offense also, their third down percent has been lousy this year.
- 40:32Speaker 1: They really have to stop being just a shot play
- 40:35Speaker 1: offense and really start to get a little bit more
- 40:37Speaker 1: run rhythm with their run game and their intermediate pass game.
- 40:41Speaker 2: And again you saw that in the Giants game, the
- 40:43Speaker 2: Week eight Giants game. Whether they carry that over or not,
- 40:47Speaker 2: I mean, you hope they do. You know, the Giants
- 40:51Speaker 2: are a bad run defense team, right, so you don't know,
- 40:54Speaker 2: you can't take that as the gospel for sure. You
- 40:57Speaker 2: got to see how they do against better rush defensive teams,
- 41:00Speaker 2: which I believe the Packers are a better run defense team. Yes,
- 41:04Speaker 2: not hard to be better than No.
- 41:06Speaker 1: I was gonna say the bar isn't very high, but yeah,
- 41:08Speaker 1: the Packers are, and they seem to play better when
- 41:10Speaker 1: they are at lambeau Field as well. It all begins
- 41:13Speaker 1: again Monday night, Monday Night Football Eagles Packers, and then
- 41:17Speaker 1: after that next week we'll be able to summarize it
- 41:20Speaker 1: all on Inside the Data. So Sam, thank you so much.
- 41:23Speaker 1: It's been a great two part series. We put a
- 41:25Speaker 1: lot of hard work in some excellent charts. I'm sure
- 41:28Speaker 1: everybody who listens appreciates it, and we appreciate all the
- 41:30Speaker 1: feedback from the show that is going to do it
- 41:33Speaker 1: for this edition of Inside the Data. For Sam Finkel,
- 41:36Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher. Thanks for watching Inside the Data on
- 41:39Speaker 1: Inside the Birds,
