- 0:01Welcome to Talking FACS, what you need to know about family,
- 0:04food, finance, and fitness.
- 0:07This nationally recognized, award-winning podcast is hosted by the University
- 0:11of Kentucky Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Program.
- 0:16Our educators share research knowledge with individuals, families,
- 0:20and communities to improve quality of life.
- 0:24Hello, and welcome to Talking FACS, what you need to know about family,
- 0:28food, finance, and fitness.
- 0:30I'm your host, Mindy McCulley, Extension Specialist for Instructional Support
- 0:33with Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:38Whether you have children of your own, or you care for children on a regular basis,
- 0:43or you get the privilege, as I do, of caring for your grandchild or other related
- 0:48children occasionally, on any given day, feeding children can be a delight or a challenge.
- 0:54Today, my guests, Dr. Courtney Luecking and Anna Cason, have hit upon an innovative
- 1:00idea to help those who care for children solve the puzzle of feeding children.
- 1:05Courtney, our Extension Professor and Specialist for Maternal and Child Health,
- 1:11and Anna, our Extension Associate for Food and Nutrition will help us delve
- 1:17into this age-old dilemma.
- 1:20So welcome to you both. Hi Mindy. Hi Mindy. Thank you.
- 1:24So you all have created SNACK Club. What is that?
- 1:28You know, we love our acronyms, but we just thought that would be a really cute
- 1:33way to bring child nutrition resources together.
- 1:37So SNACK actually stands for something.
- 1:39It's Supporting Nourished and Active Children in Kentucky.
- 1:43Because to your point, for those who have or care for children in any way,
- 1:48shape, or form, it's a journey. It's an adventure.
- 1:51It can be delightful. It can be frustrating. And we just wanted to have a place
- 1:55to pull together all of these resources to help people navigate that journey.
- 2:00We are going to feature SNACK Club as a part of Big Blue Book Club,
- 2:05which is a program that Family and Consumer Sciences Extension has been hosting
- 2:09for the past three years.
- 2:10So why did we decide to do it as part of Big Blue Book?
- 2:14Well, I won't say that I jumped in willingly at first, if we're going to be totally honest here.
- 2:21We saw how successful, or in our University of Kentucky language,
- 2:26how wildly successful it was for connecting people, especially during the pandemic. Right.
- 2:33But, you know, I really was digging my heels in the ground because I strongly,
- 2:38because of personal experiences, but also professional experiences,
- 2:42felt that caregivers of children just don't really have time to read a book or attend a book club.
- 2:49Whether it's because they're in the early phases of hands-on,
- 2:52and as I like to say it, you're in the butt-wiping phase or like the snuggling
- 2:56phase, or later on when you're just getting kids to and from activities or social
- 3:01events or things like that.
- 3:02So I was really concerned about whether or how we could really engage people
- 3:08in a book club experience.
- 3:11And so, Anna, you want to chime in on what we thought our solution might be to that concern?
- 3:16Yeah, absolutely. So our solution was essentially to read these books that we
- 3:21have found to have a lot of valuable information for this group.
- 3:26We have done the reading and then we digested the information and we're spitting
- 3:31it back out to you all in little bite-sized amounts so that it's the information
- 3:35that is relevant to you as a caregiver across all age groups for feeding children
- 3:41and going along this journey.
- 3:43And so by featuring it on Talking FACS and also on our YouTube channel,
- 3:50the FACS Learning channel, then people can digest it in the way that works best for them.
- 3:56So they can either listen to it while they're making those drop-offs or they
- 4:00can watch it, you know, after they've put the kiddos to bed and they'll be able
- 4:04to use it in the way that is most beneficial to their family. Yeah, it's brilliant.
- 4:11Well, that's the hope, right? And we'll see if it works. So this is always kind
- 4:14of trial and error sometimes.
- 4:16And so that's why we're really excited. We thought this might be a solution
- 4:19and we'll see how it works for people. And we want to hear from them. Did this work?
- 4:24Were you able to participate in a way that worked for you?
- 4:28Well, and if you are in that butt-wiping stage, as you said,
- 4:31you might only be reading Hop on Pop or another Dr.
- 4:35Seuss favorite. Or if you're further on down the road, then you might be reading,
- 4:39you know, Fancy Nancy or something else.
- 4:41But we're going to do the reading of these books.
- 4:44And we do, as we typically do for Big Blue Book Club, have books available for you.
- 4:51And so if you want to at least have the book as a resource, we have the book
- 4:55Raising a Healthy, Happy Eater that people can put on their bookshelf to have as a resource.
- 5:02Course. And so if you're one of the first 200 to register, then we will send
- 5:06that book to your local extension office and you can have that available to
- 5:10you to add to your library.
- 5:13And if you are interested and able to read the books, and if you do love a traditional
- 5:18book club format, we will be providing the suggested readings to go along with
- 5:23what we're going to be talking about in the podcast episode.
- 5:25So you can follow along in the books if that is what you would like to do.
- 5:29That is exactly right. And many of our extension offices will offer these book
- 5:35clubs in sort of a traditional format.
- 5:37They'll do watch parties, and then they can talk about it in the office with
- 5:43other people who are reading the books and listening along together.
- 5:47So lots of opportunities to listen, to watch, to engage in whatever manner works best for you.
- 5:57What books are we featuring for our Big Blue Book Club Presents SNACK Club?
- 6:02We have two of them. Like Mindy mentioned, if you register and if you are able
- 6:07to get one of the books that we have available, you will be getting Raising a Healthy, Happy Eater.
- 6:12And this book was written by a pediatrician, Namali Fernando,
- 6:15and also a speech language pathologist, Melanie Potok. So that is kind of our
- 6:21leading force for book club.
- 6:23And then we're also featuring another one, How to Raise a Mindful Eater.
- 6:27And this book was written by a registered dietitian and kind of talks about
- 6:30the mindful eating experience to really kind of complement the Raising a Healthy
- 6:37Happy Eater that talks about kind of the logistics of the eating experience,
- 6:42and identifying some underlying issues for feeding disorders and also how to combat those.
- 6:49And so I'll say that we purposely selected two, and that's why this book club
- 6:53is a little bit unique or different than our previous ones, because we picked
- 6:57one book and we kind of worked our way through.
- 6:59And in this one, we really tried to pull out the common themes across the books
- 7:03and kind of talk about what that looks like in real life.
- 7:08The Raising a Happy Healthy Eater is really great in terms of sequential presentation of information.
- 7:14So it It starts with birth, and it goes all the way through school age.
- 7:17So for people who have children in that younger space, that's a great book with
- 7:22even more detail that really focuses on the motor skills involved with eating,
- 7:28a more clinical look at eating.
- 7:30And then we really liked the behavioral complementary piece that came from this
- 7:34dietitian. So that way, we could have a well-rounded picture of nutrition.
- 7:39So not that we want to assign more reading to anyone. It's just that we thought
- 7:42the two worked really well together.
- 7:44Yes. And I will say, Mindy, that when these are lessons learned from our previous
- 7:49book club, that some of our agents around our state were really creative in
- 7:53getting people together.
- 7:54So we tried to just make it even easier for them by offering activities.
- 7:59So hands-on activities.
- 8:00We have recipe ideas that go along with the topics that we'll be talking about.
- 8:05So that's how this book club is also a little bit different.
- 8:08And while we will be blasting the Talking FACS podcast during the month of September,
- 8:14it will actually live on.
- 8:16So it's something that like if September is not a great month for you,
- 8:19then you can always come back.
- 8:20And we have a variety of resources that will come straight to your inbox when
- 8:24you sign up by email and through our Facebook group.
- 8:27So there are, as you alluded to, lots of opportunities to participate and get support.
- 8:32And that was a great segue into what exactly are the topics that we will cover.
- 8:37Yes. Anna, you want to talk about those? Yeah. So to start, we'll begin by talking
- 8:41about what to feed children, just kind of level setting, talking about what
- 8:46providing them on the plates or in bags.
- 8:49And then from there, we'll kind of dive into the weeds and we'll talk about
- 8:53language around food and using positive language when talking about food and
- 8:59promoting positive eating behaviors and that healthy relationship with food.
- 9:03And then from there, we'll split it up and divide that responsibility between
- 9:08what your role as a caregiver is and then also talking about the roles that
- 9:12children have in this eating experience.
- 9:16And then this is where it gets fun. We'll talk about creating structure with
- 9:20meal and snack times and how to kind of set boundaries, how to say no, all those fun topics.
- 9:25And then we'll touch on how to manage some mealtime behavior that we may all
- 9:30have experienced before with little ones of all different ages.
- 9:34And then lastly, we'll feature some special guests and talk about when it's
- 9:39time to phone friends and reach out for additional help.
- 9:42And then wrapping up with probably my favorite topic of all of it is having fun with food.
- 9:48And as I like to say, embracing the mess with the whole experience.
- 9:51So really ending on that high note for that final episode of the Snack Club Book Club series.
- 9:57I think all of these topics are ones as a parent that I probably would have
- 10:02loved to have had a book club to support me.
- 10:05And now as a grandparent, I'm like, oh, these are going to be so much fun to
- 10:08delve into with Eleanor. And we're going to have fun going through some of these topics.
- 10:12So how can our listeners get involved? How can they reach out and just listen
- 10:17or are there other options? Yes.
- 10:20Yes. So we have our Talking Facts that is featured on many platforms.
- 10:26Mindy, I know you know those better than I do if you want to drop those really quick.
- 10:29However, you're listening to this podcast now is how you can listen to it in the future.
- 10:35So if you want to make sure that you get links, we're going to drop shows on
- 10:39Mondays and Thursdays throughout September, but make sure you subscribe to the
- 10:43podcast so that you're going to get those in your inbox.
- 10:46And then we're also going to have video companions, which will be sort of a
- 10:52mirror image of our Talking FACS podcast, but also the video link.
- 10:57So it's going to be a little bit more for those who are inclined to be visual
- 11:02learners. You can find those on our FACS Learning channel, and we'll share
- 11:09the link for that in the show notes.
- 11:12But make sure you subscribe to that if you want to make sure to get those weekly in your inbox.
- 11:17And so those are two options for the, I guess, the low-impact engagement.
- 11:26Yeah. And you can sign up for SNACK Club so that you can get direct emails when
- 11:32we've released new episodes and related content.
- 11:36By signing up with Big Blue Book Club, you can get that loop to and for the long haul.
- 11:41But you can also get access to our private Facebook group, again,
- 11:45where we'll have more opportunities for conversation and support.
- 11:48And then kind of that local level is reaching out to your local extension office.
- 11:53They have the books for you to see and touch, and they will potentially be offering sessions.
- 11:59And so you can figure out what that schedule looks like for you.
- 12:03And then, of course, we want you to register. We will put the registration link
- 12:08in the show notes as well, but we'll put that out verbally for you.
- 12:12That is ukfcs.net/BBBCsnack
- 12:20So make sure that you register for Snack Club via that link.
- 12:24And so we will get you signed up and ready to participate in September.
- 12:30Courtney and Anna, do we have a place where people can get more information or find more resources?
- 12:38Yes, have resources that we touch on in some of the episodes,
- 12:41but then also that just kind of have a place to live on our website,
- 12:46as you can see here, which will be linked in the show notes and it will be provided
- 12:50throughout as we drop episodes and stuff.
- 12:52Stuff so on this website you will be
- 12:55able to find some additional resources for the
- 12:58topics that we touch on in our episodes we'll feature
- 13:01the talking facts episodes that have
- 13:04been previously recorded or that are recorded in the future that are
- 13:06related to these topics and then we have also found some external resources
- 13:11that provide a lot more in-depth look into some of these topics so that if there's
- 13:16something that you that really stands out to you that you want to read more
- 13:20or learn more about those external resources will be linked there as well.
- 13:25On this page, you will also find a little bit of information about us.
- 13:31So you can find our pictures, you can find our emails, and we also do have a
- 13:36specific email for SNACK Club.
- 13:38So you can reach out to us. It is snackclub@uky.edu
- 13:43All right. Well, I just hope that everyone will get involved involved in this
- 13:50novel and a different way to be involved in Big Blue Book Club,
- 13:56but also the inaugural presentation of SNACK Club, because SNACK Club is going
- 14:02to live on once we're finished with Big Blue Book Club presentation of it.
- 14:06So, I think that this will be an opportunity for those who feed children to
- 14:11have kind of a community to get resources and to talk with others who who are
- 14:17feeding children to kind of have your own support group, as it were.
- 14:21Absolutely. You took the words
- 14:22right out of our mouth. We've been talking about snack club with people.
- 14:25We say, we hope you come for the snacks and stay for the support.
- 14:29Perfect. That holds to be true.
- 14:31Perfect. Perfect. Well, thank you both for your time. If you are just tuning
- 14:36in, you are listening to Talking FACS, and you can find us wherever you listen
