- 4:28Speaker 8: Oh you know how it goes on again, off again.
- 4:30Speaker 8: Put in a full month playing bar boy at Ziggy's
- 4:33Speaker 8: joint place down in South.
- 4:34Speaker 5: MAINI you know, hmm what happened there?
- 4:36Speaker 7: Business fell off and the ZIGGI he said he had
- 4:38Speaker 7: to let me go and.
- 4:39Speaker 8: Kind of thin ever since, I'm hustling programs out of
- 4:42Speaker 8: the racetrack right now. It's not too bad. I can't
- 4:45Speaker 8: afford to bet, but I get to see the races free.
- 4:47Speaker 8: You can't have everything, I guess.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I understand you're little worried about something, Red, anything serious.
- 4:52Speaker 8: Well, yeah, it might be my guy's telling Ramri on
- 4:55Speaker 8: the phone, or wouldn't do me no good if I
- 4:57Speaker 8: got out, I mean me talking to you about it.
- 4:59Speaker 7: You know, he'd probably tie a can of my tell

- 5:26Speaker 9: Rin?
- 5:27Speaker 6: Well?
- 5:27Speaker 7: A matter of fact, that's why I want to talk

- 5:32Speaker 7: doing real good the way I get it.
- 5:34Speaker 8: I heard him a couple other guys talking about it
- 5:36Speaker 8: one night, don Ziggy's having a couple of beers.
- 5:40Speaker 7: I guess they didn't think.
- 5:41Speaker 4: I could hear him what they had to say.
- 5:43Speaker 8: This guy Allen was running off about how good he
- 5:45Speaker 8: was doing, how many places he knocked over in the
- 5:48Speaker 8: last couple of months, how much stuff he took.
- 5:50Speaker 5: What's he looked like, Rin? Oh?
- 5:52Speaker 7: But he average about my high, dark hair, a.
- 5:55Speaker 8: Little scar right in his chin, about one hundred six,
- 6:00Speaker 8: twenty seventy maybe thirty six years old.

- 6:05Speaker 6: All right, right, here you go, burger steak Carson.
- 6:08Speaker 8: Yeah, fine, sure, got a good appetise these days working

- 6:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll show you. I'm passed around ball.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Oh yeah, here you go.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Oh could these burglary jobs Allan's supposed to be pulling? Red?
- 6:26Speaker 4: Where's he working them? Do you know? Then?
- 6:29Speaker 9: No?
- 6:29Speaker 7: I guess are long all over town? I was bored? Sure,
- 6:33Speaker 7: good hammer.
- 6:34Speaker 4: When you ever heard him talking to his friends? Did
- 6:35Speaker 4: he mention any jobs in particular that he pulled?
- 6:38Speaker 8: No, he's working hard on all that for a part.
- 6:41Speaker 8: The bulls are now one every week or so.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Way, I got what about his m o. Red aren't regular.
- 6:46Speaker 7: Second story routine?
- 6:50Speaker 8: Usually Jimmy or a small bench bar usually goes through
- 6:53Speaker 8: the windows.
- 6:53Speaker 5: He worked alone? Uh huh?
- 6:55Speaker 7: Strictly there's French breads and nice and fresh.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Yeah, where's that? I'm staying in town? Do you know Red?
- 7:01Speaker 7: No? No, I know where I can find him?
- 7:03Speaker 9: Though.
- 7:04Speaker 7: With thirteen twenty two club out.
- 7:06Speaker 8: On North Paris, they got hers out there quite a
- 7:08Speaker 8: bit almost every night.
- 7:10Speaker 7: I think a guy who owns the joints for final.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Jeff Allen is that supposed to be his right name?
- 7:14Speaker 8: Red Fire as I know, uh huh. I ain't met
- 7:17Speaker 8: him a couple of times. He hung around Ziggy's space
- 7:20Speaker 8: when he first come to town. Of course I didn't
- 7:22Speaker 8: know what he was up to.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Then you don't well enough to talk to him?
- 7:26Speaker 8: Well just about Yeah, I have buddies with him or anything.
- 7:29Speaker 8: That's why I don't want to get out. You know,
- 7:32Speaker 8: he gets the word I'm on your team. I'm a
- 7:34Speaker 8: dad duck. I don't think he waste a minute calumb me.
- 7:36Speaker 5: You don't have to worry, Red. We'll keep it quiet.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Why did you hear anything else? Or is that just
- 7:40Speaker 5: about the size of him?
- 7:41Speaker 7: No, Mar's just about that far.
- 7:44Speaker 8: I'll keep near the ground if I get any more rumbled.
- 7:47Speaker 8: How passer dome? Wow, I guess you know. I really
- 7:52Speaker 8: hate to talk about it.
- 7:53Speaker 5: What's that Red?
- 7:54Speaker 9: Well?
- 7:54Speaker 7: I mean how bad things have been running lately? You know,
- 7:56Speaker 7: since I got laid off.
- 7:58Speaker 6: He is.
- 8:00Speaker 8: So like mad with the programs down the track and
- 8:02Speaker 8: bring in a whole lot though, And I allows you
- 8:05Speaker 8: land lady, had I raised my.
- 8:06Speaker 7: Rent last week?
- 8:08Speaker 4: How much can you use? Red? Oh?
- 8:10Speaker 7: Yeah, no, sighs. Anything and I'll just let alone. Maybe
- 8:12Speaker 7: something helped me hold home.
- 8:14Speaker 5: The only thing I have is a twenty Joe, you've
- 8:16Speaker 5: got any change?
- 8:17Speaker 7: My thanks? So I'm matter of trying to be fine.
- 8:18Speaker 7: That's plenty. I sure appreciate that.
- 8:20Speaker 8: Oh yeah, wow, real good Hamburger steak.
- 8:25Speaker 7: Johnny puts out. I gotta get go, and File's got me.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Down the track all right, Red, thanks a lot. Do
- 8:30Speaker 4: there's anything else call us? Huh? You got our number?
- 8:32Speaker 6: Sure?
- 8:32Speaker 7: Anything, I'll stay right on. You want me for anything, holler?
- 8:36Speaker 10: Huh.
- 8:36Speaker 7: I'm still the same place, right, Zack's alot, see you there?
- 8:40Speaker 4: Yeah, think it easy? Red?
- 8:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I read he's getting a little expensive. Huh.
- 8:46Speaker 4: He's probably been having a rough time. But he looked hungry.
- 8:48Speaker 5: I mean sure he did grab that twenty dollars bill
- 8:50Speaker 5: like his life depended on you. I went to buy
- 8:52Speaker 5: some new wool socks.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Were they Well, i'll split it with you. Be worth
- 8:55Speaker 4: more than twenty bucks if the tip pays off.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind giving him a
- 8:59Speaker 5: twenty by books is worth it. But look at this year.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Oh yeah, check for the food.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Yeah. I think the least he could have done was
- 9:05Speaker 5: pay for his own line.
- 9:13Speaker 4: By and large, the character of the informant in fact
- 9:15Speaker 4: or fiction isn't generally regarded with too much sympathy. To
- 9:19Speaker 4: most people, the informant's nothing more than a stool pigeon,
- 9:22Speaker 4: a squealer, somebody who with a very active informing commits
- 9:26Speaker 4: a sin against a supposedly popular, unwritten law. Well, it's
- 9:30Speaker 4: obvious that this isn't always so, because in the interests
- 9:33Speaker 4: of law enforcement and justice, which means the betterment of
- 9:36Speaker 4: the community, the informant very often plays a major role.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Year after year, informants are responsible for the apprehension and
- 9:44Speaker 4: conviction of many hundreds of criminals, people who rob and
- 9:47Speaker 4: sheet and commit murder, crimes that are obviously far deadlier
- 9:51Speaker 4: than informing. As for the mechanics of law enforcement, at
- 9:55Speaker 4: the level of the working detective, the informant is considered
- 9:58Speaker 4: virtually indispensable. It's been said before by peace officers, and
- 10:03Speaker 4: it'll probably be said again quite a few times. If
- 10:06Speaker 4: your job is catching criminals and enforcing the law, this
- 10:09Speaker 4: is the first rule you have to learn. The working
- 10:11Speaker 4: detective is no better than his informants. Two twelve PM.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Ben and I had no idea if the information we'd
- 10:18Speaker 4: gotten from Red Smalley was authentic or not, but it
- 10:21Speaker 4: had to be checked out. We went back to the
- 10:23Speaker 4: office and had Frank Cunningham and R and I check
- 10:25Speaker 4: on Jeff Allen. We also had the Stat's office make
- 10:28Speaker 4: a run for us on suspects with similar mos. Then
- 10:31Speaker 4: we started to page through reports of burglaries which had
- 10:33Speaker 4: occurred throughout the city during the past three months. How
- 10:41Speaker 4: you doing over there? Anything at know?
- 10:42Speaker 5: Not too much? Wait a minute, maybe this might be
- 10:45Speaker 5: one of'em.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Here, let me see.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Home in Holland Beck Park neighborhood. Burger's MO matches out
- 10:53Speaker 5: in a time Element two happened six weeks ago, winnowing.
- 10:56Speaker 5: The second floor of the house was pride open. They
- 10:58Speaker 5: took furs and money twenty three dollars.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Uh huh, that's the only one you found.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Another one here it took out a minute ago. M
- 11:05Speaker 5: was pretty much the same on this and too. The
- 11:06Speaker 5: only thing different is the night of the week it happened,
- 11:08Speaker 5: and this one's a Thursday. That when there's a Sunday.
- 11:11Speaker 5: It checks out pretty close.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Otherwise. The only one thing I can't figure, what's that? Well.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Allan's supposed to have been in the city for at
- 11:16Speaker 4: least six months. According to Red, he's working a job
- 11:20Speaker 4: maybe once a week, once every ten days or so.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Now you got two reports there. That matches them all. Here,
- 11:25Speaker 4: I've picked out two more from that other pile. Seems
- 11:27Speaker 4: to me if he's been working in town for a
- 11:29Speaker 4: couple of months or ought to be more than four
- 11:30Speaker 4: reports on him.
- 11:31Speaker 5: So I got Burglar and Meryl. Oh yeah, Frank, m M.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Jeff Allen, that's all? Now you have huh okay, right, Frank,
- 11:43Speaker 5: thank you? Yeah, Ry, And I got to make on Allen.
- 11:46Speaker 5: He's had one arrest here four years ago in to
- 11:48Speaker 5: veag George. He's a loser out of Michigan, go for burglary,
- 11:51Speaker 5: never been picked up for bergery here though he didn't register,
- 11:54Speaker 5: And that's all.
- 11:55Speaker 4: That's It doesn't seem to jail right to me? Doesn' you?
- 11:58Speaker 5: Not a loose? Ends to figure out?
- 12:00Speaker 4: Wonder if Red was handing us a line on this thing,
- 12:01Speaker 4: why would he Well, maybe he needed that twenty dollars touch.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Maybe this Jeff Allen's an old Palais is read out
- 12:06Speaker 4: of falling out with him. He wants to get in
- 12:07Speaker 4: with him.
- 12:08Speaker 5: This possible? I guess I don't got cha?
- 12:11Speaker 4: Then, Hello, neighbor, what do you saying what's with you?
- 12:14Speaker 4: You're still in that steakhout south in the town.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Yeah, third week?
- 12:16Speaker 7: Sure, getting dell. You two look busy?
- 12:18Speaker 5: What's all this? Oh, we've got a tip on some
- 12:20Speaker 5: prowl artist funny. Get a line on.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Take a look at this three point one wind, Jim,
- 12:25Speaker 4: you run into any jobs recently to stack up like this?
- 12:27Speaker 4: I say we're shooting in the dark on it so far,
- 12:30Speaker 4: I don't know if we got anything or not.
- 12:32Speaker 5: I'd say you got it regular report in the seventy
- 12:34Speaker 5: seven division this morning. Happened to check it when I
- 12:36Speaker 5: was out there, same amo, Is this same everything?
- 12:42Speaker 4: Four fifty five pm, Ben and I went down the
- 12:44Speaker 4: hall to the record bureau and picked up a couple
- 12:46Speaker 4: of mugshots of the suspect, Jefferson Allen. Then we drove
- 12:49Speaker 4: out to the thirteen twenty two Club on North Ferris
- 12:51Speaker 4: Avenue in the Silver Lake District, the neighborhood bar where
- 12:54Speaker 4: Allen spent most of his time, according to our informant,
- 12:57Speaker 4: read Smally. We staked out in the car down the
- 13:00Speaker 4: where we could keep an eye on the front door
- 13:01Speaker 4: of the bar and still not look suspicious. Between five
- 13:04Speaker 4: and seven thirty pm, we watched at least two dozen
- 13:07Speaker 4: customers entering or leaving the bar, but none of them
- 13:09Speaker 4: came close to Alan's description eight pm nothing. By the
- 13:14Speaker 4: time where we relieved on steak out at eleven pm,
- 13:16Speaker 4: Alan still had failed to show. Late the following afternoon,
- 13:20Speaker 4: we were back at the same spot watching for a
- 13:22Speaker 4: sign of the suspect. Six forty eight pm.
- 13:26Speaker 5: How are you fixed for smokes?
- 13:28Speaker 4: Oh? I think I got a couple left. Yeah, here
- 13:30Speaker 4: you go.
- 13:33Speaker 8: I got a light here, yeah, six.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Hey you have a look Joe gray hat, dark suit.
- 13:47Speaker 5: He just came out of the bar.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's coming this way. Yeah, I'll buy it.
- 13:51Speaker 5: That's him getting in that blue sid down.
- 13:53Speaker 4: I don't press Himlet's gi him a good leave, right,
- 13:55Speaker 4: just get him in. What do you think Let's wait
- 14:01Speaker 4: a minute, Yeah, okay, we'll clear all right? You got
- 14:07Speaker 4: him spotted?
- 14:07Speaker 5: Yeah, no trouble. That's a funny one. Huh. I wonder
- 14:10Speaker 5: why we didn't see him go in and bore.
- 14:11Speaker 4: I don't know. It might be a delivery entrance in
- 14:13Speaker 4: the back of the place we could have missed.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Can you make out that Licen's number?
- 14:16Speaker 4: Can you plod just a little? That's good? Yeah, let's

- 15:47Speaker 5: No sign of anybody else there. No house was dark
- 15:51Speaker 5: when we drove up, wasn't it. He couldn't be living
- 15:53Speaker 5: there alone.
- 15:53Speaker 4: He might be.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Doesn't make much sense to me. Why would a single
- 15:56Speaker 5: guy get himself.
- 15:57Speaker 4: A house that'd be Let's wait it out. Maybe he'll
- 15:59Speaker 4: come up with the answer. Nine fifteen pm we continued
- 16:04Speaker 4: our stakeout on the bungalow on South Bronson Avenue. A
- 16:07Speaker 4: little more than an hour passed when we saw the
- 16:09Speaker 4: lights go out in the house. The suspect, Jeff Allen,
- 16:12Speaker 4: came out the front door, locked up, got in his
- 16:15Speaker 4: car and drove off. Ben and I followed him. He
- 16:18Speaker 4: drove directly to the bar on North Ferris Avenue, the
- 16:21Speaker 4: thirteen twenty two club. He parked his car and went inside.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Ben and I drove back to the cottage on South
- 16:26Speaker 4: Bronson and let ourselves in through the back door. A
- 16:29Speaker 4: preliminary check of the house failed to give us any
- 16:31Speaker 4: real proof that Allan was the suspect we wanted. The
- 16:34Speaker 4: only possible lead we came up with was an expensive
- 16:36Speaker 4: hunting rifle, which we found stored away in one of
- 16:39Speaker 4: the closets. We copied down the serial number on the gun,
- 16:42Speaker 4: drove to a neighborhood's cigar store, called the office and
- 16:45Speaker 4: asked him to check out the number for us.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, Marph, we'll wait for the call.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, how'd you do?
- 16:52Speaker 5: I'm gonna check it through now that call us good.
- 16:55Speaker 4: I'm a little hungry, aren't you? Do you like candy bar?
- 16:58Speaker 5: No, I'm getting a little tired of moun't mind the
- 17:00Speaker 5: square meal out. My back's killing me. Never been to
- 17:03Speaker 5: soaring my life.
- 17:04Speaker 4: What's the matter, you fall?
- 17:06Speaker 5: No, nothing like that. It's my snoring.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Again, snoring? What's that got to do with it?
- 17:10Speaker 5: Almost broke my back. It's a wife's idea. She claims
- 17:12Speaker 5: that I'm sleeping, I roll over on my back and
- 17:14Speaker 5: snores as he keeps your awake all night.
- 17:16Speaker 4: There's not much you can do about it, is it?
- 17:18Speaker 5: Eyah? The wife sawt of something supposed to be an
- 17:19Speaker 5: ald home remedy. She sewed a couple of golf balls
- 17:22Speaker 5: right into the back of my pajamas. You get the
- 17:24Speaker 5: idea behind it. If you roll over on your back,
- 17:27Speaker 5: the golf balls dig into you and you have to
- 17:29Speaker 5: roll over on your side again.
- 17:31Speaker 4: That'll see what happened to you.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Well, I'm a sound sleeper, rolled over on my back
- 17:34Speaker 5: and stayed there, slept on those golf balls all night,
- 17:38Speaker 5: woke up in the morning and like to have died.
- 17:40Speaker 5: But like I snapped a couple of vertebrae.
- 17:42Speaker 4: It must be an easier way to keep you from
- 17:44Speaker 4: sleeping on your back.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Uh, I wouldn't do any good anyhow, George just won't work.
- 17:48Speaker 5: I snowed just as loud sleeping on my side.
- 17:51Speaker 4: I get it. Hello, yahmer is Joe Friday.
- 18:00Speaker 7: W six three four four?
- 18:03Speaker 4: Yeah? That checks? That was a serial in Lamorn? When
- 18:05Speaker 4: was that?
- 18:06Speaker 5: Huh?
- 18:07Speaker 4: Yeah? Y'all camer Thanks bye. I think maybe we got
- 18:13Speaker 4: a break. Yeah, they got to make on the gun
- 18:15Speaker 4: we found, is it registered Dallen? No, it was taken
- 18:17Speaker 4: in a burglary two months ago.
- 18:29Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 18:32Speaker 3: force in action.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Tuesday night, April seventeenth, ten thirty eight pm, we got
- 18:44Speaker 4: additional information from the office on the hunting rifle that
- 18:47Speaker 4: we'd found in the bungalow to which we trailed the suspect,
- 18:49Speaker 4: Jefferson Allen, a few hours earlier.
- 18:51Speaker 7: The gun was.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Registered to a mister Robert Lsal thirty oh eight Bush Street.
- 18:56Speaker 4: The rifle, along with three hundred dollars in jewelry and
- 18:58Speaker 4: forty eight dollars in cash, had been taken from LaSalle's
- 19:01Speaker 4: home two months before during his family's absence. The burglar's
- 19:05Speaker 4: method of operation matched Allen's alleged MO. Exactly ten forty
- 19:10Speaker 4: five PM. After arranging for a stakeout to be placed
- 19:13Speaker 4: on the bungalow on Bronson Avenue, Ben and I drove
- 19:16Speaker 4: to the thirteen twenty two club on North Ferris, where
- 19:18Speaker 4: we located the suspect, jeff Allen.
- 19:21Speaker 5: Yes, sir, that's correct, sergeant. I'm from back in Michigan originally.
- 19:24Speaker 5: I've been out here about six months now. I think
- 19:26Speaker 5: I'm gonna like it. Sure can't beat this weather. You've
- 19:29Speaker 5: been working here at the bory ever since you got
- 19:31Speaker 5: in town? Is that right? No, not quite. I've been
- 19:33Speaker 5: here for about four months. Kind of a handyman job.
- 19:36Speaker 5: I helped the bartender when I can keep the storeroom
- 19:39Speaker 5: in order see everything ship shaped?
- 19:40Speaker 3: You know?
- 19:41Speaker 4: Uh? Have you ever been in Los Angeles before, Allen?
- 19:43Speaker 5: Yeah, just once before, a couple of years ago. It
- 19:46Speaker 5: wasn't so good. Then. Jobs were hard to get I
- 19:49Speaker 5: ran into a little bit of trouble. Finally went back
- 19:51Speaker 5: east again.
- 19:52Speaker 4: I see, what was this trouble you had?
- 19:54Speaker 2: Well?
- 19:54Speaker 5: As I say, jobs were pretty hard to come by then.
- 19:57Speaker 5: I kept checking around, but I couldn't find anything. When
- 20:00Speaker 5: so good. I finally got picked up on a bag
- 20:02Speaker 5: charge and spent a couple of weeks at the county.
- 20:05Speaker 5: When I got out, I figured the best thing was
- 20:07Speaker 5: head back east again. A lot better this time though,
- 20:09Speaker 5: I'm doing okay. See, I couldn't get you anything. No,
- 20:14Speaker 5: there's something maybe you'd like to talk to me about,
- 20:16Speaker 5: anything I can help you with. It's a routine checkup.
- 20:18Speaker 7: We're on.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Got a few more questions for you, if you don't mind,
- 20:21Speaker 5: for sure, let's take one of these booths back here. Huh,
- 20:24Speaker 5: might as well be comfortable?
- 20:26Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, go ahead?
- 20:31Speaker 7: You sure I couldn't got you anything?
- 20:32Speaker 5: A bottle of beer or coke? Maybe? No, you have
- 20:35Speaker 5: your family out here with you all and your wife. No,
- 20:37Speaker 5: I'm not married. Sorry, and I haven't taken the plunge yet.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Figure there's plenty of time for that. Hard enough to
- 20:43Speaker 5: keep myself going these days, let alone a family. Yeah,
- 20:46Speaker 5: I know what you mean.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Have you ever been arrested before, Alan, I mean, other
- 20:50Speaker 4: than that bag charge you mentioned, you ever served any
- 20:51Speaker 4: big time Yeah?
- 20:53Speaker 5: Matter of fact, I have back in Michigan. Pretty dumb trick.
- 20:56Speaker 5: I got in trouble as a kid, burglary served all
- 20:59Speaker 5: my time, though I don't know my day. I'm washed
- 21:01Speaker 5: up with that stuff a long time ago. It just
- 21:02Speaker 5: doesn't pay that so.
- 21:04Speaker 4: Uh. Then that last time there was any trouble was
- 21:06Speaker 4: that vague charge? Is that it?
- 21:07Speaker 5: Yes, sir, that's it. As I say, I'm all washed
- 21:09Speaker 5: up with that stuff. It doesn't pay off at all.
- 21:11Speaker 5: I got wise to that. Mm hm. Lead to hear it, Allen,
- 21:13Speaker 5: And you figure you're going to stay on here, then
- 21:15Speaker 5: make this your permanent home. Yeah, I think I might.
- 21:18Speaker 5: It's sure like the weather job suits me too. Boss
- 21:21Speaker 5: even lets me use his car once in a while.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Were you nice? Huh?
- 21:24Speaker 4: Yeah? Where are you living now? You got an apartment
- 21:26Speaker 4: in the neighborhood here?
- 21:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I got an apartment, a nice little place. Not
- 21:29Speaker 5: exactly in the neighborhood, though, it's out in West Hollywood,
- 21:32Speaker 5: right on a bus line. No trouble getting into work.
- 21:34Speaker 5: It's a small apartment or abouts in West Hollywood. You
- 21:37Speaker 5: mind giving us the address? Oh, it's on Norwich Avenue.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Why do yes, It's part of this routine check. We
- 21:42Speaker 5: have to make you mind very much if we drive
- 21:44Speaker 5: out there with you. I don't look the place over. No,
- 21:46Speaker 5: I don't mind. I mean if you figure I need
- 21:48Speaker 5: checking out, I just assume clear it up now. I
- 21:50Speaker 5: got nothing to hide. Do you want me to get
- 21:51Speaker 5: my coat?
- 21:52Speaker 4: No, it's all right.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Say I should be back here in an hour or so.
- 21:58Speaker 5: What do you think I mean, it's just a route
- 22:00Speaker 5: tea check. It won't take long with.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Them, No, not too long. I suppose you can figure
- 22:03Speaker 4: that better than weekend.
- 22:04Speaker 5: How do you mean he.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Said you had nothing to hide? Eleven twenty pm we
- 22:10Speaker 4: drove the suspect, Jeff Allen, to his apartment on Norwich Avenue.
- 22:14Speaker 4: It was more than two and a half miles from
- 22:16Speaker 4: the bungalow on South Bronson where we followed Alan earlier
- 22:18Speaker 4: that night, and where we located the stolen hunting rifle.
- 22:21Speaker 4: While Ben and I made a thorough check of the apartment.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Allan sat relaxed in an easy chair. Ben and I
- 22:27Speaker 4: covered everything in the apartment, but there was no evidence
- 22:29Speaker 4: of any loot taking in the burglaries.
- 22:32Speaker 5: That's about it. Joe checked everything. Okay, that's about it.
- 22:35Speaker 5: I sergeant, you fellas want a beer before we go
- 22:37Speaker 5: back to the club.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Just one or two more questions, Allan than I. Anything
- 22:40Speaker 4: will wash this thing up.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Sure sertain.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Do you rent some other place in town? Another house
- 22:45Speaker 4: or an apartment?
- 22:46Speaker 5: Maybe another place? No, why would I do that? This
- 22:48Speaker 5: is my apartment. This is where I live. Why do
- 22:50Speaker 5: you ask that?
- 22:51Speaker 4: About six o'clock to night, you were seen going into
- 22:53Speaker 4: a bungalow over on South Bronson, the same neighborhood as
- 22:56Speaker 4: a club where you work. We got a pretty good idea.
- 22:58Speaker 4: This quite a bit of loot from burglary store in
- 23:00Speaker 4: that house.
- 23:00Speaker 5: I don't follow his sergeant. I don't know what you mean.
- 23:02Speaker 5: I don't live on South Bronson. I live here. You
- 23:04Speaker 5: ought to be able to tell that you were seen
- 23:06Speaker 5: going into the bungalow alan About five minutes past six tonight,
- 23:09Speaker 5: we found a stolen hunting raffle in the house. It
- 23:12Speaker 5: was taken in a burglary. You think you want to
- 23:14Speaker 5: tell us about No, I can't tell you anything about it.
- 23:17Speaker 5: I don't have any bungalow on South Bronson. I'm not
- 23:19Speaker 5: even sure I can tell you where this treet is.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Then you better get your hat, mister, we'll show you.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Eleven forty eight pm, we got in the car and
- 23:29Speaker 4: started driving down Beverly Boulevard back toward the bungalow on
- 23:32Speaker 4: South Bronson Avenue. When we got to the bungalow, the
- 23:35Speaker 4: suspect still refused to admit that he had a key
- 23:37Speaker 4: to the door or that he was in any way
- 23:39Speaker 4: concerned with the place. We had him empty his pockets,
- 23:42Speaker 4: and among his possessions we found a ring of keys.
- 23:45Speaker 4: We tried them on the front door of the bungalow.
- 23:48Speaker 4: The fourth when we tried opened it, we went inside.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Alan still would admit nothing. Ben contacted the landlady next
- 23:55Speaker 4: door and she said she'd be right over. I continued
- 23:58Speaker 4: questioning him while Ben checked through the house again.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Hey, Joel, yo, you want to come back here. I
- 24:03Speaker 5: think we've got some.
- 24:04Speaker 4: All right, Ben? You want to go ahead back here?
- 24:06Speaker 2: Ellen?
- 24:06Speaker 5: Sure? Okay? I still can't tell you what the score is.
- 24:09Speaker 5: So I don't belong in this place. It ain't mine.
- 24:12Speaker 4: What key you head? Seemed to fit the front door?
- 24:13Speaker 4: All right?
- 24:14Speaker 5: How do you figure that that doesn't mean anything? I
- 24:16Speaker 5: had that key for years. I think it's a skeleton
- 24:18Speaker 5: key opens almost any kind of life down here, Joe,
- 24:21Speaker 5: small basement here leads right down off the kitch. All right,
- 24:23Speaker 5: go ahead, Allen, have a look, Joe. Line of cupboards
- 24:33Speaker 5: all the way around here. Check them for yourself. Yeah,
- 24:39Speaker 5: it's a pretty good haul.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Furs, machinist tools, jewelry, quite a bit of it here,
- 24:47Speaker 4: A couple of radios, two more hunting rifles. Come on,
- 24:52Speaker 4: how about it, Alan, I want to save time for
- 24:54Speaker 4: all of us.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Now, you got it wrong. Sorry, I think this isn't
- 24:57Speaker 5: my place. I told you when I got out of
- 24:58Speaker 5: that trouble back east, I made a my mind. I
- 25:00Speaker 5: was all washed up with this kind of stuff. This
- 25:03Speaker 5: house is mine. I haven't got anything to do with it.
- 25:04Speaker 5: You're a kid and yourself, Allan, you know that. Oh
- 25:07Speaker 5: you got it all wrong, you got it all mixed up. Well,
- 25:09Speaker 5: we'll let the landlady tell.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Us the woman who owns this house. She's on her
- 25:13Speaker 4: way over from next door. She ought to be able
- 25:14Speaker 4: to tell us who she ranted the place to. Wouldn't
- 25:17Speaker 4: you say so? Wouldn't you?
- 25:22Speaker 5: She might be wrong? It's possible now.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Look we got you did the right to mister, why
- 25:26Speaker 4: not face it?
- 25:29Speaker 5: Can't? I won't do it. I made up my mind
- 25:31Speaker 5: the last time it wouldn't happen again. I was all
- 25:35Speaker 5: washed up with it. I won't go through it again.
- 25:36Speaker 5: They will send me back and we'll be able to
- 25:38Speaker 5: take it. Maybe you should have figured that before you
- 25:40Speaker 5: started in. I didn't mean too. I was all washed
- 25:44Speaker 5: up with that stuff. I told you that the first
- 25:45Speaker 5: time I saw you. Didn't I know sure of it too.
- 25:49Speaker 5: I wouldn't try it again, didn't pay. It's just what
- 25:54Speaker 5: I told you. I'm all through with it, and I
- 25:56Speaker 5: washed up with it. I never lied to you, did
- 25:58Speaker 5: I what's the difference? Humph, you lie to yourself.
- 26:09Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:13Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:15Speaker 3: On July sixth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:18Speaker 3: eighty sixth, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:21Speaker 3: In a moment, the results of that trial, the apprehension
- 26:32Speaker 3: of the suspect, Jefferson Herald Allan, resulted in clearing twenty
- 26:35Speaker 3: two cases of burglaries committed over the past four months.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Allan was indicted on twenty two counts of first degree
- 26:41Speaker 3: burglary and received sentence. As prescribed by law, first degree
- 26:45Speaker 3: burglary is punishable by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for
- 26:48Speaker 3: not less than five years.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, only two point six patients out of
- 26:55Speaker 2: every hundred reaching the most forward hospitals in Korea died later.
- 27:00Speaker 2: The comparable figure in World War Two was four point five.
- 27:05Speaker 2: According to official medical statements, The almost miraculous success in
- 27:09Speaker 2: saving the lives of casualties is owing in part to
- 27:13Speaker 2: the prompt use of blood plasma on the battle field
- 27:15Speaker 2: and whole blood in military hospitals. Whole blood reduces shock
- 27:20Speaker 2: for potential killer and replaces blood lost through bleeding in
- 27:25Speaker 2: the treatment of many battle casualties. There is no substitute
- 27:28Speaker 2: for blood. Every American who has given blood can and
- 27:32Speaker 2: should feel he personally has contributed directly to the saving
- 27:35Speaker 2: of the life of an American boy. This month, your
- 27:39Speaker 2: country is short three hundred thousand pints of blood. Please
- 27:44Speaker 2: give your blood and save a life.
- 27:56Speaker 3: You have just heard drag met a series of authentic
- 27:59Speaker 3: cases from officials. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 28:02Speaker 3: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Today's the silver anniversary of NBC.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Welcome Back Our suspect. Kind of got to a point
- 28:22Speaker 1: where I was like, oh, come on, Now. Certainly I
- 28:26Speaker 1: respect that a criminal does not have to choose to
- 28:29Speaker 1: incriminate him or herself, but I would have a lot
- 28:32Speaker 1: more respect for a criminal who plams up and takes
- 28:37Speaker 1: the fifth rather than continuing on with the lame denials.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I mean, when they got to the point where they
- 28:43Speaker 1: were going to bring the landlady over and he was like, well,
- 28:47Speaker 1: she could be mistaken before she even identified him, I
- 28:51Speaker 1: was like, oh, come on. And kind of the same
- 28:54Speaker 1: thing with his insistence that, you know, his statement that
- 28:59Speaker 1: he was done with that after he got out of prison,
- 29:03Speaker 1: which they were supposed to take as something that indicated
- 29:09Speaker 1: his good intentions. But I have so much trouble buying that. Now.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Let's be clear, there are crimes that you can commit
- 29:19Speaker 1: on a whim. You know, you get back into the
- 29:21Speaker 1: wrong sort of environment and you make a bad choice
- 29:27Speaker 1: and you can find yourself committing a similar crime, re offending.
- 29:32Speaker 1: But burglary is such a premedicated crime. You don't just
- 29:37Speaker 1: randomly burglarize the place. You've got to make sure that
- 29:41Speaker 1: it's worth burglarizing, and you've also got to make sure
- 29:45Speaker 1: that it's a place that you can access without being
- 29:49Speaker 1: easily detected. So I don't like a criminal who insults
- 29:53Speaker 1: our intelligence, which I kind of feel like it did.
- 29:56Speaker 1: All right, Listener comments and feedback now, and we have
- 29:59Speaker 1: a couple comments on Spotify regarding the Big Lease Mechanics.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Sixty six rites after hearing Harry Bartel try a Mexican accent,
- 30:09Speaker 1: I'm glad he didn't try a French accent on that
- 30:12Speaker 1: escape episode with Jack Webb as an OSS agent. And
- 30:18Speaker 1: then Harrison says she might have been a criminal, but
- 30:21Speaker 1: at least she could properly pronounce Julio credit where credit
- 30:25Speaker 1: is due, I guess, and then Lucifer Sam says, hey, Adam,
- 30:28Speaker 1: Joe says, all we know are the facts, ma'am at
- 30:32Speaker 1: the twenty minute mark. I think that's the closest I've
- 30:35Speaker 1: heard to just the facts, man. Yeah, And of course
- 30:38Speaker 1: I think it's a very different context because in that case,
- 30:43Speaker 1: he was explaining their investigation. But the framing and it
- 30:48Speaker 1: comes I think from the Sanfrey Bert parody, and the
- 30:51Speaker 1: way it gets interpreted is that that's something that Joe
- 30:55Speaker 1: Friday says when questioning witnesses, and it's not. And I mean,
- 31:02Speaker 1: I think there are two things I hate about that idea.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Number one, it's route and second is that I think
- 31:11Speaker 1: it's a bad way to question witnesses because the witnesses
- 31:16Speaker 1: and one thing that I think you do hear from Dragnet,
- 31:20Speaker 1: and I think it's a very good lesson, is that
- 31:24Speaker 1: not everyone understands what the pertinent facts are, and there
- 31:29Speaker 1: are details that are going to be forgotten, particularly if
- 31:33Speaker 1: you sit there and you rush the witness. And where
- 31:37Speaker 1: they tend to have some success is by questioning the witness,
- 31:42Speaker 1: letting them tell the story as they experienced it, asking
- 31:48Speaker 1: follow up questions and then if and there are sometimes
- 31:52Speaker 1: where a witness just goes completely off the rails, where
- 31:56Speaker 1: we have gone so far from any sort of relevant
- 32:00Speaker 1: that they need to get them back on track. And
- 32:05Speaker 1: so what Friday will say in that instance is, oh,
- 32:09Speaker 1: that's very interesting, ma'am. But now I'd like to talk
- 32:12Speaker 1: a little bit more about the car you saw? Could
