- 1:15Speaker 1: a leak? Is that is that.
- 1:16Speaker 2: That I'm gonna be out there, you know, shaking her
- 1:20Speaker 2: off or something, and I'm gonna look over and there

- 1:27Speaker 2: just I don't know.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Well, here's the thing. We shower once it's dark for
- 1:32Speaker 1: the most part. Oh you do.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I like. We haven't we haven't. I
- 1:35Speaker 4: don't think we've done a daytime shower yet.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So this show's gonna this new show's gonna be a
- 1:40Speaker 2: little bit different. We are gonna have we have some
- 1:41Speaker 2: news coming in the end. There's some there's some hot
- 1:44Speaker 2: news coming in the end. But we're gonna be heavy
- 1:45Speaker 2: on our news section because we're gonna talk about We're
- 1:48Speaker 2: gonna talk about we're gonna do a field report, reporting

- 1:58Speaker 1: We've got three of them lined up. Young men.
- 2:00Speaker 2: All you people that think that the world's going to
- 2:02Speaker 2: hell and the kids these days and all that all.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Your worst fears will be realized.
- 2:10Speaker 2: When we conduct a series of interviews with like the
- 2:14Speaker 2: worst of the worst.
- 2:17Speaker 1: We have fourteen and two sixteens.
- 2:19Speaker 3: You have almost fifteen.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, we got like basically a fifteen and two sixteens.
- 2:24Speaker 2: They're gonna come on, You're gonna realize that just how
- 2:26Speaker 2: bad things are when they come on and share their thoughts.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It's worse than you think. And then we're gonna we're
- 2:34Speaker 2: gonna get us some new stuff. We got grizzly Bear.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We got a kind of an interesting deal with grizzly
- 2:38Speaker 2: bears up in Canada. We got an interesting thing about
- 2:42Speaker 2: shooting drones with TSS and are continued reporting on TSS.
- 2:48Speaker 2: We got some news from Cornell, my new enemies, Cornell University.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Used to love them. Now they're my enemies. Really, I'll
- 2:55Speaker 2: tell you, and we gotta And then we're gonna go
- 2:58Speaker 2: to a pre recorded interview with someone from Ducks Unlimited
- 3:01Speaker 2: about a botchulism Get this, a botchulism outbreak.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Killing thousands of ducks right now.
- 3:12Speaker 2: A botulism outbreak killing thousands of wild ducks. But for starters,
- 3:19Speaker 2: we're gonna announcing here's the I've been dying to talk
- 3:22Speaker 2: about this. We haven't talked about it yet. The Christmas Tour.
- 3:24Speaker 2: This year's Christmas tour is coming up.
- 3:26Speaker 1: This time.
- 3:27Speaker 2: We're hitting last year's Christmas tours down South. It was
- 3:30Speaker 2: kind of like the Yankees come down South, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 2: like Sherman's March all over again. Yeah, but you guys
- 3:40Speaker 2: wrecked that place. Yeah, we wrecked it. But this is
- 3:43Speaker 2: more in the Midwest. So we're gonna do this year's
- 3:46Speaker 2: Christmas tour where you come out all theater shows, a
- 3:52Speaker 2: night of entertainment, guaranteed, laughs, live music, you name it. Monday,
- 3:58Speaker 2: December fourteenth, we're going to be in Grand and Rapids, Michigan.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Okay, at Monroe Live twenty Monroe Live. What does that mean?
- 4:07Speaker 2: That's a theater, Grand Rapids, Michigan, so very close to
- 4:10Speaker 2: where I grew up. That's where I went to Regular College.
- 4:13Speaker 2: That's where I finished. Regular College was in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Tuesday,
- 4:17Speaker 2: December fifteenth, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Turner Hall. Wednesday, December sixteenth, Madison, Wisconsin, Barrymore.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I have a feeling there's gonna be a lot of people.
- 4:30Speaker 2: That aren't from Madison. They're asking why it was in Madison.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I'm not following.
- 4:38Speaker 1: That happens a lot.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Like the people that come to the show aren't actually
- 4:43Speaker 2: from Madison, like.
- 4:44Speaker 3: They're coming in from the country.
- 4:45Speaker 1: To I believe you had it in Madison. I had
- 4:49Speaker 1: to come into Madison all these hippies.
- 4:51Speaker 2: You know, So come tell me all about that. That's
- 4:55Speaker 2: at the Barry. That's at the Barrymore Clay Knwke, the
- 5:00Speaker 2: Brent Reeves Me. Yannis Peutelus's in the live tour this year.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Great show again, live music guaranteed, laughs, lots of prises. Thursday,
- 5:11Speaker 2: December seventeenth, So December seventeenth, the christ Meat Eater Christmas
- 5:16Speaker 2: Tour Des Moines, Iowa at the val Air Ballroom Friday,
- 5:21Speaker 2: December eighteenth, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pantagious Theater. Then the tour closes
- 5:29Speaker 2: the sixth night of the tour Saturday, December nineteen, Fargo,
- 5:35Speaker 2: North Dakota, Fargo Theater. Is there any like special guests,
- 5:40Speaker 2: We'll get it all. We'll get to all that later, Okay,
- 5:43Speaker 2: we'll announce that later. December fourteenth, Grand Rapids December fifteenth, Milwaukee,
- 5:49Speaker 2: December sixteenth, Madison, Wisconsin, December seventeenth, Des Moines, Iowa, December eighteenth, Minneapolis, Minnesota,
- 5:55Speaker 2: December nineteenth, Fargo, North Dakota guaranteed last lots of Prime
- 6:01Speaker 2: me Eater's Christmas tour. Also the punt gun that we
- 6:06Speaker 2: shot that made our punt gun video about. We bought
- 6:09Speaker 2: it for twenty grand from Rock Island, which is a
- 6:13Speaker 2: premiere auction site for antique firearms and other firearms. We're
- 6:17Speaker 2: selling it back. We're selling it at Rock Island. All
- 6:22Speaker 2: money goes to conservation.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:27Speaker 2: The auction is on August twenty third. It's part of
- 6:29Speaker 2: Rock Island's August Premiere auction. It is a two gauge
- 6:37Speaker 2: two gauge Holland and Holland punt gun features ninety five
- 6:43Speaker 2: percent of its original paint, custom engravings, and it works.
- 6:48Speaker 2: When we bought it, we didn't know if it works.
- 6:51Speaker 2: It works. We shot it six times. We have the
- 6:53Speaker 2: shell casings. You can have a functioning gun and you
- 6:58Speaker 2: can watch a video of at work. And very rarely
- 7:00Speaker 2: on Rock Island does a punt gun come up, but
- 7:04Speaker 2: this is happening August twenty third. Rock Island is the
- 7:07Speaker 2: world's biggest auction house for antique and historic firearms. They
- 7:12Speaker 2: sell for you punt gun enthusiasts out there. They sell
- 7:15Speaker 2: less than one punt gun every year, so rare. This
- 7:19Speaker 2: is This is the only punt gun Rock Island has
- 7:24Speaker 2: ever sold that they know for a fact works.
- 7:29Speaker 1: How's that for a superlative?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yeah, the only one, the one and only.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Oh, Jeremy Romero's here, he's not normal on the news show.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Did they know when you bought it from the first time?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Did they know that it worked? No, we had to
- 7:41Speaker 1: find out that it worked. Gotcha, It definitely works. Works great.
- 7:47Speaker 2: The only punt gun that has ever sold on Rock
- 7:49Speaker 2: Island that works well that they know works.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 2: It's like when Dirt. When we found out Dirt has
- 7:55Speaker 2: a narwhal allergy. Many people probably have Narwal allergies, but
- 8:02Speaker 2: they don't know.
- 8:03Speaker 3: They don't have the opportunity to find out.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But he has a certified Narwal allergy.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Now, when Dirt goes to restaurants and they say any allergies,
- 8:11Speaker 2: Dirt can now say, which I'm jealous of.
- 8:14Speaker 1: He can say Narwal. So what did he eat?
- 8:17Speaker 3: Narwal?
- 8:18Speaker 2: He ate it and it took him four times to
- 8:20Speaker 2: figure out that that's what was getting him. Well, his
- 8:23Speaker 2: throat chokes up, he turns bright red, gets all itchy.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, when he eats.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Narwal the fourth time, we ate a good bit of it,
- 8:31Speaker 2: and then he finally got it in his head.
- 8:34Speaker 1: He's like, I have a narwhal allergy. I know I
- 8:37Speaker 1: do now.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I didn't know what's been happening, but the four times
- 8:40Speaker 2: I've eaten it, I've had an immediate reaction. Huh, dirt
- 8:43Speaker 2: is allergic to narwal Interesting. We bought the punk gun
- 8:48Speaker 2: for twenty thousand bucks. Rock Island estimates estimates estimate, Yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 2: estimates that it will sell for between twenty and thirty grand.
- 8:59Speaker 3: It's a good chunk of chain for conservation.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Should you get people out there that want to take
- 9:03Speaker 2: your turn on of the punt gun if we If
- 9:05Speaker 2: the punt gun goes for less than we bought it,
- 9:07Speaker 2: that's a real kick to the nuts for us. Yeah,
- 9:10Speaker 2: because we went and got the trouble. We're giving you
- 9:12Speaker 2: a shell casing and the gun works.
- 9:15Speaker 5: There's custom made cases.
- 9:17Speaker 2: You have the custom casings. Yeah, they're not cheap either, right, No,
- 9:23Speaker 2: every dollar goes with the Meat Eater Land Access Initiative.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Rock Island is even waiving their fees so the even
- 9:31Speaker 2: more money goes to conservation. August twenty third, you don't
- 9:35Speaker 2: need to be in person to bid. When Spencer uh
- 9:40Speaker 2: Newhart won it at auction. He won it remotely.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Is there Do you know if there's a minimum bid
- 9:45Speaker 3: or how they're doing it?
- 9:47Speaker 2: Don't know, Rockiland Auction dot com. Is a great question,
- 9:49Speaker 2: but I can't answer it. Check out it's a lot
- 9:51Speaker 2: three three eight six. Get your own punt gun.
- 9:54Speaker 5: So you're selling one shell with it so they can.
- 9:57Speaker 2: All so you can bring it to your machine as
- 9:59Speaker 2: the hea mock up the shell and we'll tell you
- 10:02Speaker 2: everything we know about shooting it. Shoots great shoots great.

- 10:41Speaker 2: com to gear up for your hunt. Season opener sale. Okay,
- 10:47Speaker 2: time for our news fishing report. Fishing has been.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Spectacular, like almost as good as the weather, which is.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Like spectly odd. Yeah, some years are good, some years
- 11:03Speaker 1: are not good. I don't know what it is. It's
- 11:05Speaker 1: just been a stellar year for fishing.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I when I come up here, I usually expect it
- 11:10Speaker 3: to be half the day's decent, half the day's slow,
- 11:14Speaker 3: like you know, temper your expectations.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But yeah, it's amazing.
- 11:18Speaker 5: And mixed bag everything.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, mixed bag.
- 11:23Speaker 2: We you know, kings king salmon numbers have been down
- 11:27Speaker 2: and there's been a lot of restrictions on king salmon.
- 11:29Speaker 2: They must be having pretty good returns in in BC
- 11:32Speaker 2: and British Columbia. I'm guessing because a couple of years,
- 11:36Speaker 2: this time of year it's just closed, closed, no retention
- 11:39Speaker 2: on kings. Then it was like you could have one,
- 11:42Speaker 2: you could have two, but you can a non resident
- 11:45Speaker 2: can catch a couple of kings.
- 11:46Speaker 3: It's it's been pretty predictable the last fairly predictable last
- 11:51Speaker 3: what two three years. I don't know if that's because
- 11:55Speaker 3: we figured out how to.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Fish for or exactly what is it's fluttergigs, Yeah, I
- 12:00Speaker 2: think so, But if we should, I'll tell you what
- 12:05Speaker 2: doesn't work.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Scratch that. Scratch it. I said.
- 12:09Speaker 2: We used to jig a lot of hall but will
- 12:11Speaker 2: leadhead jigs and grub what do you call them?
- 12:18Speaker 3: They glow glow ones.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Kings don't hit them, Nope, But kings like pinks, like fluttergigs.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Everything likes flutter jigs. Kings hit flutter jigs deep.
- 12:29Speaker 1: So what was that? Deep? Yeah? Real deep. Yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 2: That's the weird thing too about kings is that they're
- 12:35Speaker 2: like just ways that you don't picture King salmon. Is
- 12:39Speaker 2: we get some kings scattered, but you know we hook
- 12:44Speaker 2: kings that are grabbing a flutter jig that's banging the
- 12:47Speaker 2: bottom in one hundred and eighty feet of water two
- 12:50Speaker 2: feet of water. Yeah, he's down there grubbing in the mud,
- 12:53Speaker 2: which is not how you picture king salmon.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yeah, and you can expect I don't know, a couple
- 12:59Speaker 3: of good opportunities to day. You screwed one up, and
- 13:05Speaker 3: screwed one up.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Brody's boy, he'll come. He'll be on talking about this
- 13:08Speaker 2: in a minute.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'm not gonna talk about it. I wasn't in your boat.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Well, he'll talk.
- 13:17Speaker 5: I brought one up today. It was twenty seven inches
- 13:20Speaker 5: seven inches.
- 13:20Speaker 3: There's a minimum.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I threw a twenty six threw a twenty six king back.
- 13:26Speaker 3: We got a legal one today. Hayden got a legal
- 13:28Speaker 3: one today.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Well, it's a little confusing when you hook him right,
- 13:31Speaker 5: because you're you're dropping your bottom fishing for halibit and cod,
- 13:35Speaker 5: expecting to really set the hook in something that's going
- 13:38Speaker 5: to give you some fight, and you set the hook
- 13:40Speaker 5: and your line just goes slack. Before you know it,
- 13:42Speaker 5: you're reeling as fast as you can to catch up
- 13:44Speaker 5: to it. It's like you're processing it all happening.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a weird thing about King Sam and psychology
- 13:52Speaker 2: is like a halibit, he wants nothing to do with
- 13:56Speaker 2: that boat. Yep, he wants nothing to do with the
- 13:58Speaker 2: surface of the ocean.
- 13:59Speaker 3: He wants that bottom back in his mind.
- 14:01Speaker 1: He's like, I'm not leaving the bottom.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And he's also not going laterally like he's like, he's like,
- 14:09Speaker 2: I'm gonna stay.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Unless you catch him shallow.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Right, then they freaking run like yeah, sethwoods one, a
- 14:15Speaker 2: big one, real shallow and then it took off rye.
- 14:18Speaker 1: But normally they stay glued to the bottom.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, you're reeling, nothing's happening, and you're like,
- 14:23Speaker 3: what's going on? And then fifty yards from the boat,
- 14:26Speaker 3: a king salmon's jumping out of the wine.
- 14:29Speaker 2: If you want to think of it spatially, picture that
- 14:31Speaker 2: you're standing at a urinal like looking down. A king
- 14:36Speaker 2: wants to be around the hole that the pea drains
- 14:39Speaker 2: down like he's like, just down, you mean, a hal
- 14:42Speaker 2: of it, it helps, a hall of it wants to.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Be down in there, yep.
- 14:47Speaker 2: And the king king wants to be up by the handle,
- 14:49Speaker 2: the flesh handle the king.
- 14:51Speaker 1: The king's the spray that's coming out and hitting you
- 14:54Speaker 1: in the knees.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but why king salmon. It's weird that the king
- 14:58Speaker 2: salmon thinks the way he does. What does he think?
- 15:01Speaker 2: Like you haven't even even if you haven't even.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Put pressure on him yet. No, No, they're just.
- 15:08Speaker 2: The fact that he has a hook in his lip
- 15:10Speaker 2: makes them want to come up and breach the surface.
- 15:12Speaker 3: And that's when things are gonna go wrong.
- 15:15Speaker 5: So you have to back your drag off right, because
- 15:18Speaker 5: your drags tight for a hell of it. So the
- 15:20Speaker 5: moment you feel like it's a king.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Oh he's got three miles of slack.
- 15:23Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean, you're like reeling up as fast
- 15:25Speaker 5: as you can trying to back your drag off. At
- 15:27Speaker 5: the same time.
- 15:28Speaker 4: And then yeah, and the only problem with the flutter
- 15:32Speaker 4: is that they're they're heavy and once they get out
- 15:36Speaker 4: of the water with those things, shake them off, Like yeah.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I always think maybe he's gonna knock himself out.
- 15:43Speaker 5: Just lay there a few times in years past where
- 15:47Speaker 5: we just never took a net with us. So getting
- 15:50Speaker 5: those kings into.
- 15:50Speaker 3: The because you got to know they're legal, and then
- 15:55Speaker 3: you got to get a gaff in them while they're going.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Rough gauge the legality. Yeah, I learned the thing today
- 16:03Speaker 2: that I didn't know. I just heard it. Maybe a
- 16:07Speaker 2: rumor doesn't sound like a rumor. I heard today that
- 16:15Speaker 2: a friend of a friend there's a fish called the
- 16:20Speaker 2: yellow eye rock fish. You're loud right now? A non
- 16:23Speaker 2: residence allowed. What?
- 16:26Speaker 1: Yeah, this gets so complicated.
- 16:28Speaker 3: We've talked about it before, but yeah, Alaska regulates rockfish
- 16:32Speaker 3: in sort of not by species, but almost like by
- 16:35Speaker 3: classification of rockfish kind of where they live.
- 16:39Speaker 2: So you have plagic rockfish, shelf rockfish, and slope rockfish,
- 16:42Speaker 2: and each of those buckets has specimens in the buckets.
- 16:46Speaker 2: But there is one rockfish, the yellow eye rockfish, that
- 16:49Speaker 2: you have to log the catch. If you're a non resident,
- 16:52Speaker 2: you have you have to log the catch. I heard
- 16:55Speaker 2: today and I didn't know this, and I'm gonna be
- 16:59Speaker 2: way more diligent about it going forward. I didn't know
- 17:01Speaker 2: that it was this quick because we'll come back at night.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I don't want to incriminate myself. I didn't know it
- 17:07Speaker 2: was immediate. I heard sometimes you just do it, but
- 17:10Speaker 2: the app makes it easier once you get used to
- 17:12Speaker 2: the app. I kind of forgot about the app, but
- 17:13Speaker 2: the app makes it easier. A guy caught yellow eye
- 17:18Speaker 2: ADFG must have been watching with binoculars. They waited thirteen
- 17:23Speaker 2: minutes oh for him to approached his boat and gave
- 17:28Speaker 2: him a citation for not logging his yellow eye.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's like big game. Fill out your immediate.
- 17:35Speaker 6: No.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yeah, they treat it like no different. And I didn't.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I just like just ignorance on my part, not not
- 17:41Speaker 2: doing my work to read the rags carefully. I did
- 17:45Speaker 2: not know that it meant like the second you caught it. Yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 2: we're always you know, I'm just like I said, I'm
- 17:52Speaker 2: just admitting the guilt. You know, we'll be like, oh,
- 17:55Speaker 2: don't forget.
- 17:56Speaker 4: Well, so many of those things in other states are
- 17:59Speaker 4: like twenty four hours.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, like we catch a bobcat, you got twenty four
- 18:03Speaker 2: hours to report the bobcat. I had no idea. You
- 18:05Speaker 2: have to immediately, like put in your cooler. But you're
- 18:07Speaker 2: tagging it.
- 18:12Speaker 3: It's probably this. I don't know if it would be
- 18:15Speaker 3: just yellow eye. Would it be that way for lin
- 18:17Speaker 3: cod and like kings.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yea of the rockfish, so sablefish yep, all the non
- 18:23Speaker 2: resident like sablefish, kings, yellow eyes, link cod, salmon, sharking,
- 18:30Speaker 2: wing cob.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's good to know.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Log it immediately.
- 18:34Speaker 2: That's a that's a public service announcement for you anglers
- 18:37Speaker 2: out there. Log your stuff. I didn't know, but I
- 18:40Speaker 2: can tell you what going forward. Like you said, Johnny,
- 18:45Speaker 2: log book man.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Log them when I hook into them.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, yellow kind of can.
- 18:53Speaker 3: They don't get away much.
- 18:55Speaker 2: So Kyle, who you'll be hearing from, we're gonna do
- 18:58Speaker 2: a quick interview with him. Just part of the Erica
- 19:00Speaker 2: is a terrible youth.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Uh. He caught his yellow I went out and trying
- 19:06Speaker 1: to get his yellow eyes.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Happen this morning and my little my little boy was like,
- 19:12Speaker 2: get the gaf, get the gaff. I'm like that fish,
- 19:14Speaker 2: he can't get away.
- 19:15Speaker 1: You wanted to.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Fish take on nowhere.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Yeah, you can bring him halfway up and he can
- 19:22Speaker 4: get off and eventually.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Well, you know what, I've seen that happen two times.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I have two times seen yellow eyes and three hundred
- 19:33Speaker 2: feet of water come off somewhere on the journey up
- 19:40Speaker 2: and I'm not kidding you, ten minutes later whatever, there's
- 19:42Speaker 2: a yellow eye floating there.
- 19:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:44Speaker 2: He got barrel trauma. He got enough barrel trauma before
- 19:47Speaker 2: he shook the hook. Did he came off.
- 19:51Speaker 3: As much as he'd like to get back down.
- 19:53Speaker 1: There, he can't do it. Can't do. Yeah.
- 19:55Speaker 4: With those things, you feel like you get a couple
- 19:58Speaker 4: headshakes in the beginning and then it's just like dragging
- 20:01Speaker 4: up something.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Yeah, heavy and they got they got a good five
- 20:05Speaker 2: seconds of fight.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Yeah, but you're digging that automatic that automatic release descender.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Yeah. We had a guy on this. Here's another hot
- 20:16Speaker 1: tip for anglers. Man.
- 20:18Speaker 2: We had a guy on from I think he was
- 20:21Speaker 2: he was was he Nature? Yeah, we had from Nature
- 20:24Speaker 2: Conservancy and he brought so in Alaska and this is
- 20:28Speaker 2: true in other places too, but in Alaska, if you're fishing,
- 20:33Speaker 2: if you're fishing, I can't think of you're fishing rock fish,
- 20:36Speaker 2: or there's the potential to catch rock fish, whatever it is,
- 20:38Speaker 2: you have to have a descender device with you.
- 20:41Speaker 1: There's a lot of fish species, Goliath groupers.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Or one, I think, and all the rock fisher one
- 20:46Speaker 2: that they don't. They don't, they don't. They can't equalize well.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So when they do a sudden when they do a
- 20:53Speaker 2: sudden pressure change from going from deep to shallow, their
- 20:58Speaker 2: swim bladder can't regulate like a halib it can't. Like
- 21:01Speaker 2: you can take a helvet from five hundred feet of
- 21:02Speaker 2: water to the surface and need to swim back down,
- 21:06Speaker 2: but a rockfish has to very slowly do it like
- 21:08Speaker 2: a scuba diver. He has to do a slow ascend.
- 21:11Speaker 2: So they regulate that you have on board a descender device.
- 21:17Speaker 2: This guy gave us these pressure sensitive descenders and you
- 21:22Speaker 2: can set it one two hundred, three hundred, and normally
- 21:27Speaker 2: you're trying to put this little needle in his lip.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Oh, and you're getting all those rockfish have spines.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and then you're keeping him longer.
- 21:36Speaker 2: He's can't he's not cooperating because he don't know what's
- 21:38Speaker 2: going on, and you're trying to explain to him. It's like, listen, dude,
- 21:41Speaker 2: I'm trying to send you back to the bottom of
- 21:43Speaker 2: the ocean. Calm down. This descender has like a little plier.
- 21:48Speaker 2: It's like it's the most ingenious. It's called the sequalizer.
- 21:51Speaker 3: It's almost like the jaws on a boga grip.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Yeah you know, yeah, sequalizer. It's got the perfect grip
- 21:57Speaker 2: for grabbing him. You grab his and it goes. You
- 22:01Speaker 2: set it to whatever. If you're fishing a hundred round
- 22:03Speaker 2: one hundred feet of water, set it two hundred feet,
- 22:07Speaker 2: go down, and it just lets the fish go. I
- 22:09Speaker 2: watch him on my fish finder. The thing is, the
- 22:11Speaker 2: thing is unbelievable.
- 22:13Speaker 3: And see the fish keep going.
- 22:15Speaker 2: You'll see it. You'll be watched that thing go down.
- 22:18Speaker 2: It gets you a hundred and all of a sudden,
- 22:19Speaker 2: like the fish breaks off you guys, breaks right. He
- 22:26Speaker 2: breaks right and goes and like slowly makes his way down.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Man, huh, yeah, we're great. Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 5: I've been using that old old school descender and that's
- 22:37Speaker 5: that's a pain. Yeah, see Bobby pin looking deal.
- 22:40Speaker 2: I highly recommend the Sequelizer descender if you're a person
- 22:44Speaker 2: lives in these areas, but think we're discussing is the
- 22:46Speaker 2: peacod deal because halibit have all the cachet. People want
- 22:52Speaker 2: to come catch a halibit. When you leave in the morning,
- 22:55Speaker 2: you say, we're going for haliban, but more and more,
- 23:00Speaker 2: I'm going for peacod, pacific cod.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Yeah, they're hoping for those big waves of just cod
- 23:06Speaker 3: after cod.
- 23:08Speaker 2: That is eating fish so much better because you're here
- 23:11Speaker 2: to collect food.
- 23:12Speaker 3: It ain't about like a big fight out of that thing.
- 23:16Speaker 2: It isn't eating It is an eating fish. Yeah, we
- 23:19Speaker 2: had cod there night. We had hell last night. It's
- 23:21Speaker 2: like cod is just a better fish. They call them
- 23:25Speaker 2: gray cod or pacific cod. Far superior fish. Not a
- 23:29Speaker 2: big fight.
- 23:30Speaker 3: You're gonna get some some people writing in about that.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I bet soft mouths. You can't.
- 23:34Speaker 4: You got people you gotta you can't really set the
- 23:39Speaker 4: hook real hard on them.
- 23:41Speaker 1: No, you'll, yeah, you'll tear them, you know, soft miles.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Soft bodies annoying to flay, ye, very annoying to Why
- 23:49Speaker 1: is that?
- 23:49Speaker 2: Because it's their bodies doesn't have rigidity, Like flaying a
- 23:52Speaker 2: helb is elegant, Flaying a peacod is like you just
- 23:56Speaker 2: feel like you never do it the same way. It's
- 23:59Speaker 2: like flaying and it's like flying catfish. Yeah, it's big head.
- 24:05Speaker 2: A peacock likes that jig tickling the mud now and
- 24:08Speaker 2: then I think he's down there and.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Now, and they don't whack it. Sometimes it's just you know,
- 24:13Speaker 3: a little tickle. And that's a hell of a fish.
- 24:18Speaker 2: The fryingest of all fish. Uh oh, here's another gear report.
- 24:24Speaker 2: I so the sequelizer is a hell of a piece
- 24:27Speaker 2: of equipment. I bought a ceramic fishing knife because you
- 24:34Speaker 2: never have to worry. It doesn't get rusty cheap. No,
- 24:38Speaker 2: it's a serrated it looks like a pairing knife. It's
- 24:41Speaker 2: serrated and it's you just leave it on your boat.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Never gets rusty.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Nice.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Well, we went to kill a fish with it and
- 24:46Speaker 2: the tip broke off and then I dropped it over
- 24:48Speaker 2: the side of the boat.
- 24:50Speaker 1: So I don't know.
- 24:53Speaker 2: One of those guys that goes on Amazon becaus it
- 24:55Speaker 2: a bad review. One star fell over the side of
- 24:58Speaker 2: the boat. It's like you're like going to buy a
- 25:04Speaker 2: product and Amazon and you're reading the reviewers and people
- 25:06Speaker 2: are giving it bad reviews for stuff like that has
- 25:08Speaker 2: nothing to do with the product whatsoever. Yeah, you know,
- 25:13Speaker 2: but I think I'm onto something with a ceramic fish knife.
- 25:15Speaker 1: If you can keep from losing over the side of
- 25:17Speaker 1: the boat, I have to check it out.
- 25:18Speaker 5: Do they stay pretty sharp?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Didn't have it long enough?
- 25:21Speaker 2: I dropped over the side of the boat right off
- 25:23Speaker 2: the bat There was an incomplete gear report.
- 25:26Speaker 1: I have to I'll have to come back for part
- 25:27Speaker 1: two of this gear report.
- 25:30Speaker 2: But if anyone's got a hot tip about that, I'd
- 25:31Speaker 2: be curious to hear their hot tip. Okay, you guys,
- 25:36Speaker 2: are you guys ready to bring over our first interview subject. Yeah,
- 25:40Speaker 2: we're gonna dig into America's youth. Who wants to start? Hayden,
- 25:45Speaker 2: come on over, Brody's boy, Hayden's coming over.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Here. He is Hayden How Hayden Henderson? Introduce yourself.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Hi, my name is Hayden. I'm Brodie's kid.
- 25:59Speaker 2: And tell everybody what you've been doing with your time after.
- 26:02Speaker 3: School running for a cross country mostly.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Okay, yesterday we had a situation. Here's one of the
- 26:10Speaker 2: things I want to ask you about.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Yesterday.
- 26:12Speaker 2: We had a situation where you you.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Weren't breaking along because we were in saltwater.
- 26:18Speaker 2: You had a king sam and attack your flutter jig
- 26:22Speaker 2: and as happens, well, a couple of things happens. I
- 26:26Speaker 2: think they swipe at the flutter jig and get hooked,
- 26:29Speaker 2: or I think sometimes they get lip hooked, but when
- 26:32Speaker 2: they're rolling around they get the assist hook, one of
- 26:36Speaker 2: the assist hooks in their tail, and then their their
- 26:38Speaker 2: lip hook dislodges and then he's in the tail. But
- 26:41Speaker 2: either way, he came up ass backward. Yeah, he was chill.
- 26:45Speaker 2: He comes up to the surface nice, big king, definitely
- 26:48Speaker 2: twenty eight inch king.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I grabbed the net, I go in for a scoop.
- 26:54Speaker 2: And miss oh fish is gone, ooh did you and
- 26:59Speaker 2: I want the level with me? When you run that
- 27:04Speaker 2: through your head, do you think that gentleman was trying
- 27:10Speaker 2: just trying to help or do you feel like do
- 27:14Speaker 2: you feel like like I cost you that fish?
- 27:18Speaker 8: No, it was fighting weird. It was fighting like a howlbit.
- 27:20Speaker 8: It didn't burn up to the surface pulling down. And
- 27:24Speaker 8: then you said you just hesitated when it came to
- 27:27Speaker 8: the surface, and he just paused and was too slow
- 27:30Speaker 8: with the net.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, but how have you how did it change our relationship?
- 27:37Speaker 1: He lost it for you?
- 27:39Speaker 5: Were you thinking like, this is a man who's netted
- 27:41Speaker 5: many kings. He shouldn't be able. He should have made
- 27:44Speaker 5: a mistake like that, or things happen.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Or like I knew he would do that.
- 27:49Speaker 3: He wasn't talking bad about you behind you.
- 27:52Speaker 4: It must be it must some with you and Henderson's
- 27:54Speaker 4: because I'm out here.
- 27:57Speaker 1: That's that's the thing.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Lost a lot of Henderson's fish. We got to go
- 28:04Speaker 2: to the point where I think they're like, he feels
- 28:07Speaker 2: like if he can't have him, no one can.
- 28:11Speaker 3: I don't even go and Steve's a little fishy. It'll
- 28:14Speaker 3: happen to me if I go on Steve's boat.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Brody's wife, for instance, Yeah, Brody's wife nice hell, but.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Yeah in her own boat, not even not even a
- 28:25Speaker 4: part of the boarder, her boat lost her.
- 28:31Speaker 3: You weren't You weren't super bummed out?
- 28:33Speaker 1: Let me in there, Let me in there.
- 28:35Speaker 3: No, because I also got that king today. Yeah, made
- 28:39Speaker 3: up for it. Yeah, it all worked out. And he's
- 28:41Speaker 3: spend in a boat with me and a bunch losing
- 28:44Speaker 3: fish form screaming at him for doing it wrong.
- 28:46Speaker 2: It happens, so it didn't shake anything up. No, what
- 28:49Speaker 2: was the highlight of your of your your trip? Your
- 28:51Speaker 2: weak fishing.
- 28:53Speaker 8: It might have been today because today started off kind
- 28:55Speaker 8: of slow. But then we went and got three slot
- 28:58Speaker 8: link CODs. I got my king salmon, So those a
- 29:02Speaker 8: pretty good day.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Yeah, your family went from no legal link cod. We
- 29:06Speaker 2: should explain that. You want to talk about it, chick,
- 29:09Speaker 2: that's tough regulation. Tight slot linkot has to be between
- 29:14Speaker 2: thirty and thirty five inches to keep it.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Can I can? I was what four or five years ago,
- 29:21Speaker 3: it's thirty to forty five yep, And they knocked at
- 29:24Speaker 3: thirty thirty to forty something and now it's thirty to
- 29:27Speaker 3: thirty five.
- 29:28Speaker 2: I'm waiting for it to go thirty to thirty one. Oh,
- 29:32Speaker 2: which we would have had legal We would have had one,
- 29:34Speaker 2: had one too.
- 29:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Uh yeah, it's a tight slot. It's a tight slot.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Thirty thirty five, we had an over we had an
- 29:41Speaker 2: over slot fish. Today we had two underslot fish. But
- 29:45Speaker 2: Brody did you guys did the kind of a miracle
- 29:47Speaker 2: thing and hit in one day hit three slot fish.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Yeah, those are they're so cool, those fish.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I should clarify you're allowed one over. You're tellingly
- 29:58Speaker 2: allowed to linkotta because you're allowed one over fifty five.
- 30:01Speaker 2: But those don't exist. Oh my god, if you get
- 30:03Speaker 2: one of your record out of state.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Record state records fifty five inches, yeah, yeah, the world
- 30:08Speaker 4: it might be the world record.
- 30:09Speaker 1: They're letting you keep a new record.
- 30:12Speaker 5: It's hard to imagine a fifty five inch link cut.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I used to think that we were going to catch one.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Then Seth looked it up.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I was like, there's got to be a bunch of
- 30:22Speaker 2: out there, and Seth's like, well, it would be like said,
- 30:25Speaker 2: I think I think said the world record was fifty
- 30:28Speaker 2: four Wow.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Yeah, this is fifty fifty inches something, yeah, something.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I'm sure they exist, but uh, interestingly, for a while,
- 30:37Speaker 2: the state record link cut I don't know about now,
- 30:39Speaker 2: but the state record linkcot was only from about seven
- 30:41Speaker 2: eight miles from here. But remember from the eighties. From
- 30:45Speaker 2: the eighties, the.
- 30:46Speaker 4: State record might be the world I remember looking at
- 30:48Speaker 4: up like, who's going to beat it?
- 30:50Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, but some mean cool fish.
- 30:54Speaker 1: So tell me so today.
- 30:55Speaker 2: You liked it because it started out a slow bite
- 30:57Speaker 2: and then you got onto a hot bite.
- 30:59Speaker 1: You guys, you guys brought in a lot of kelp greenling. Yeah,
- 31:02Speaker 1: oh I love that fish. You know, big ones too, yep.
- 31:05Speaker 2: And then uh, you got a king, you got those
- 31:07Speaker 2: link CODs, got some black rock fish, got some black
- 31:10Speaker 2: rock fish that's the pelagic rock fish, which you're allowed
- 31:13Speaker 2: a couple of day.
- 31:14Speaker 1: If you a day something like that.
- 31:16Speaker 2: You know, uh you do you imagine coming and fishing
- 31:18Speaker 2: to get next to your hayden. Yeah, let's say there
- 31:21Speaker 2: was a track, and let's say there was a cross
- 31:23Speaker 2: country race, and you had to decide what would be
- 31:28Speaker 2: more important to you.
- 31:29Speaker 8: There's there's some backstory to this. We do the youth
- 31:31Speaker 8: hunt together and I'm missing missing it because I have
- 31:36Speaker 8: a varsity cross country race.
- 31:38Speaker 1: How do they already know they're going to have a
- 31:39Speaker 1: race that day because they just like schedule this far
- 31:43Speaker 1: in advance. Yeah, you couldn't say like, well, hey, I
- 31:46Speaker 1: got a conflict.
- 31:47Speaker 8: No, because they're like scheduled by each school. I'm not
- 31:51Speaker 8: sure which one. It is called the principal or something.
- 31:54Speaker 1: You think that's something that's something that they would look into.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Yeah, like, well, they'd be like, hey boy, somebody got
- 32:00Speaker 2: hunts playing or anything. We're trying to play in a
- 32:01Speaker 2: cross country race.
- 32:02Speaker 8: I don't think the race is during the youth season,
- 32:06Speaker 8: but it was, it'd be during the trip out two.
- 32:11Speaker 2: So when you look at those race schedule, it doesn't
- 32:14Speaker 2: say for date, it doesn't say youth season, but it
- 32:20Speaker 2: might be total, meaning they might be totally unaware of
- 32:22Speaker 2: the conflict.
- 32:23Speaker 3: You gotta answer Steve question though, would you would you
- 32:25Speaker 3: skip a week here for a week here? Yeah, because
- 32:30Speaker 3: you mean skip a race.
- 32:32Speaker 8: Yeah, there's really only one chance, but I have more
- 32:35Speaker 8: opportunities to go get a deer.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. Any final things you like to add, No,
- 32:44Speaker 2: not really. What do you think is wrong with kids
- 32:46Speaker 2: these days?
- 32:48Speaker 1: Like? Why are you guys so terrible?
- 32:52Speaker 4: Just look at Jimmy, look in his hand, look at
- 32:56Speaker 4: your out running cross country?
- 32:58Speaker 1: Fishing? Whatever happen of the old kind of kids?
- 33:02Speaker 2: What did they do? They played pac Man in Frogger.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Anything you'd like to add, Hayden, Nope, I wish you'd
- 33:13Speaker 2: best luck. So you're trying to be varsity. You're trying
- 33:15Speaker 2: to be varsity cross country, which means you're playing up,
- 33:19Speaker 2: you're dating up.
- 33:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 33:21Speaker 8: Our team had seven seniorars graduate, which is like a
- 33:25Speaker 8: whole varsity roster.
- 33:27Speaker 3: So I'm assuming also.
- 33:29Speaker 1: There might be room for you. Yeah, but you're gonna
- 33:31Speaker 1: be a.
- 33:31Speaker 3: What grade tenth grade sophomore.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Okay, got it, and you're looking forward to this opportunity. Okay,
- 33:41Speaker 2: Now one last question for you. This is through the school,
- 33:47Speaker 2: not through like league or club or something.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the school cross country team.
- 33:52Speaker 2: God, so you got like little jerseys and everything. Yeah, okay, Oh,
- 33:57Speaker 2: do you think you're good enough to play college?
- 34:00Speaker 7: Know?
- 34:00Speaker 3: I going to college for sports was never playing.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Really, that's not what you that's not what you want
- 34:06Speaker 1: out of life.
- 34:07Speaker 3: No, I don't think so.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Like for fishing, maybe maybe you can go to college
- 34:11Speaker 1: for fishing these days, not Halibu fishing, but bass.
- 34:15Speaker 2: You gotta go fish little teeny fish.
- 34:19Speaker 1: You gotta fish teeny fish to go to college for us?
- 34:22Speaker 1: Isn't that weird? Some of the hell but we're catching
- 34:24Speaker 1: out here are smaller than they're small large.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Get the potential, the potential, that's true. All right, Hey,
- 34:31Speaker 2: thanks for joining man, thanks for having me. You know
- 34:34Speaker 2: we're gonna bring on our next terrible kid. Who's up
- 34:37Speaker 2: James one, James, Ladies and gentlemen, we're stepping up in age.
- 34:42Speaker 2: This is what happens. This is what happens to a
- 34:44Speaker 2: kid when he hits sixteen.
- 34:47Speaker 3: He wears the sunglasses.
- 34:48Speaker 6: They wears the sunglasses at night, which I recently learned
- 34:52Speaker 6: that's from a song.
- 34:57Speaker 1: James, what's been the highlight of your trip?
- 35:01Speaker 6: Probably attempting to shoot a salmon and the salt water
- 35:06Speaker 6: because freshwater is illegal. Spearfish and salmon, spearfishing salmon. Yeah,
- 35:10Speaker 6: what would give me a better one? Because give me,
- 35:12Speaker 6: give me something like a Roden reel highlight, that big
- 35:18Speaker 6: link cod that Kaya hook today who will be coming
- 35:21Speaker 6: on soon, and that Matthew landed that was over the slot.
- 35:26Speaker 6: So right now you can keep him thirty to thirty
- 35:28Speaker 6: five inches and this one was thirty eight, so it
- 35:30Speaker 6: was over the slot.
- 35:31Speaker 1: I think he was bigger. I didn't even straighten him out.
- 35:34Speaker 1: I just like I held that.
- 35:36Speaker 2: He wasn't even straight and I held the I got
- 35:40Speaker 2: like a flexible tape measure, you know, And I just
- 35:43Speaker 2: saw thirty eight, and I'm like, he's still crooked. He's
- 35:45Speaker 2: thirty eight. So I just knew he wasn't a contender. Yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 2: that was the highlight of the trip.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Do you got a better one?
- 35:52Speaker 9: What?
- 35:53Speaker 2: I don't know?
- 35:53Speaker 6: Like Kaya caught his yellow like like, oh, okay, caught
- 35:57Speaker 6: a slot. He'll probably talk about this, but usually when
- 36:00Speaker 6: we go fish yellow eye because it's a one of
- 36:02Speaker 6: your fish, it's kind of like you just drop down
- 36:04Speaker 6: and get it when either the weather's really bad or
- 36:07Speaker 6: you have twenty minutes to burn I mean, And we
- 36:09Speaker 6: spent what eight hours, I mean, like an incredible amount
- 36:13Speaker 6: of time.
- 36:14Speaker 2: The first day I said I'm gonna get my yellow eye,
- 36:17Speaker 2: and like three minutes later I had him in my hand.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Jimmy got his yellow ee kind of on accident, and
- 36:23Speaker 2: we kept being like, let's go get Kaya's yellow eye,
- 36:25Speaker 2: and just that kid, we'll be hearing from him.
- 36:29Speaker 1: How do you here? Here's a question I'd like to
- 36:31Speaker 1: ask you. How do you select?
- 36:34Speaker 2: Because Kaya was your guest, you brought a guest up
- 36:37Speaker 2: to your family place.
- 36:38Speaker 1: How did you make your selection? Well?
- 36:42Speaker 6: Kay always works really hard because he works in the
- 36:45Speaker 6: Flagship store in Bozeman. But before that, he's always had
- 36:49Speaker 6: an interest in like saltwater fishing because his family never,
- 36:54Speaker 6: as you know, didn't have any sort of interest in
- 36:57Speaker 6: like hunting or fishing.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Yep.
- 37:00Speaker 6: And when that started to becoming a little bit more
- 37:02Speaker 6: prevalent when he was friends with me, he started to
- 37:05Speaker 6: like saltwater fish and started to get more interested in that.
- 37:08Speaker 6: So over the two years that I've known him, that
- 37:12Speaker 6: just became more and more of a thing. So I
- 37:15Speaker 6: thought that he'd be a good person to have up
- 37:17Speaker 6: here and try fishing.
- 37:18Speaker 1: And then how you feel about the decision to bring
- 37:21Speaker 1: a friend up.
- 37:21Speaker 6: I think it was a good idea. I think Cock
- 37:23Speaker 6: of the Cove is in his reach.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Yeah he could, Yeah, he could. Yeah, he could be
- 37:27Speaker 1: in the running for Cock of the Cove. The running,
- 37:34Speaker 1: I guess you're running. Yeah.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Uh so your highlights were all around your friend now,
- 37:42Speaker 2: but your other highlight was trying to get a samone
- 37:44Speaker 2: with a spear gun, which is which is difficult, very
- 37:47Speaker 2: more difficult that I would have imagined.
- 37:49Speaker 1: But you've done it successfully before.
- 37:51Speaker 6: Yeah, more in a different creek than that when they're
- 37:55Speaker 6: a little bit more packed together and not as spooky.
- 37:58Speaker 6: But I think because it's a little later and the
- 38:00Speaker 6: seals have been chasing them around and the water quality
- 38:04Speaker 6: is so terrible that just trying to get one in
- 38:07Speaker 6: range is a little bit more difficult.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:09Speaker 2: So one just just be clear, since we're law dog
- 38:12Speaker 2: and like, uh, you just said in a creek, can
- 38:15Speaker 2: you explain what you mean by the different creek.
- 38:19Speaker 6: Not in a creek, but outside of the mouth of
- 38:21Speaker 6: a creek, there's like where the salt water reaches the
- 38:26Speaker 6: fresh water. If you go just beyond that to where
- 38:29Speaker 6: it's actually legal, there's two that are kind of bordering
- 38:32Speaker 6: next to each other, but there's two different species of
- 38:34Speaker 6: salmon that run there. We have pink salmon that run
- 38:37Speaker 6: in the one to the left, and then in the
- 38:39Speaker 6: one to the right there's more silvers and pinks, which
- 38:41Speaker 6: is a little bit and silvers hold up a little
- 38:43Speaker 6: bit better in a freezer. So that's the one that
- 38:46Speaker 6: I was trying to get one closer to that.
- 38:48Speaker 2: So the REGs work that you can't spear a salmon
- 38:52Speaker 2: in fresh water, so you need to imagine the contr
- 39:00Speaker 2: the shoreline contours and draw a line where you like,
- 39:06Speaker 2: imagine that the stream isn't there, so it's a little
- 39:08Speaker 2: estuary or mouth or whatever is off limits. But you
- 39:12Speaker 2: can be out beyond that line. If you imagine the
- 39:16Speaker 2: shoreline contour where the creek flows in, you can be
- 39:19Speaker 2: out in the salt out there. But you're sort of
- 39:22Speaker 2: targeting fish that are congregating to run.
- 39:25Speaker 6: Yeah, you're just getting them because especially if you go
- 39:27Speaker 6: all the tides falling, the fish will like be pushed
- 39:32Speaker 6: out into the ocean a little bit more, and that's
- 39:35Speaker 6: where you can try to shoot him.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Then what are they doing, Jim, when when they see
- 39:39Speaker 3: you moving around, they.
- 39:42Speaker 6: Yeah, they don't like it at all. But what kind
- 39:44Speaker 6: of gives you an advantage is if you run closer
- 39:46Speaker 6: to the bank, those big schools when they're coming at
- 39:49Speaker 6: you will split on either side, and because they kind
- 39:52Speaker 6: of don't know what's doing, just follow the other fish,
- 39:55Speaker 6: like the one in front of them. If you try
- 39:56Speaker 6: to cut off the group that's going along, like if
- 39:59Speaker 6: I was going up, like if there was a group
- 40:02Speaker 6: of fish to my left, if I were to start
- 40:04Speaker 6: swimming that direction, I would cut them off to a
- 40:06Speaker 6: shorter area where they'd be pushed up more to the
- 40:09Speaker 6: bank and give me a closer shot with.
- 40:10Speaker 1: The spear gun. Gotcha what I do?
- 40:13Speaker 2: Because you're in shallow so you can stand up and
- 40:15Speaker 2: look for the wakes and swirls, you know, and then
- 40:18Speaker 2: crews down the shore line trying to find But.
- 40:21Speaker 5: You guys, ever, just stay in one spot.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I've done that. It's hard.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Well, it's boring, as I'll get out. Then you can
- 40:29Speaker 2: stand up and you're like, oh, I should just swim
- 40:31Speaker 2: over that way.
- 40:32Speaker 5: You wouldn't spook them as fast doing that.
- 40:35Speaker 2: No you don't, but no, they but they know, like
- 40:38Speaker 2: they know you gotta you know, you move your gun.
- 40:41Speaker 2: They kind of recognize because they're getting hounded by seals
- 40:43Speaker 2: and sea lions, so they're on high alert.
- 40:45Speaker 5: Man, you guys need like a gilly suit.
- 40:48Speaker 3: What about how there's kelp lines, you know, and they'll
- 40:53Speaker 3: travel those kelp lines. Just getting in there in ambush again.
- 40:58Speaker 2: You get in there and you're like, is the greatest
- 41:00Speaker 2: idea that ever had, anybody's ever had? And then like
- 41:03Speaker 2: a couple minutes later, you're like, yeah, look around. It's
- 41:08Speaker 2: just like last night. I had that idea last night,
- 41:11Speaker 2: I got into some weeds held on.
- 41:14Speaker 1: They're like, I could.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Sit here all night, right, I don't know. Then you
- 41:18Speaker 2: just go. But yeah, hunting out in the kelp was
- 41:20Speaker 2: a good idea.
- 41:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 41:22Speaker 6: There's also a lot of interesting stuff in there, Like
- 41:23Speaker 6: you can find an octopus in Greatly Yep, they're down
- 41:26Speaker 6: at the bottoms of that.
- 41:27Speaker 1: A lot of crabs, little rock crabs you see diving yep.
- 41:32Speaker 1: What else?
- 41:33Speaker 2: You got any other thing you'd like to add we're
- 41:36Speaker 2: gonna hear. We're gonna hear from your friend Kaya in
- 41:38Speaker 2: the second here.
- 41:39Speaker 6: Yeah, he plays basketball.
- 41:41Speaker 2: M hmm, we'll get we'll get into that. Well, what
- 41:44Speaker 2: do you feel is wrong with today's youth? Why are
- 41:46Speaker 2: you guys so terrible fishing and all that?
- 41:50Speaker 6: Yeah, that makes us pretty awful. And then we all
- 41:53Speaker 6: have phone addictions.
- 41:55Speaker 3: So but your phones don't work here.
- 41:57Speaker 6: Our phone's don't work.
- 42:00Speaker 1: That's why.
- 42:01Speaker 2: That's why I like you so much more out here.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Thanks for coming on, James, appreciate it. Oh, Jimmy, if
- 42:09Speaker 2: you want Jimmy, Jimmy likes taking photographs. You can go
- 42:12Speaker 2: see some of Jimmy's photographs as you go on Instagram
- 42:14Speaker 2: to at Jimmy Renelo.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Is that what it is at Jimmy Renello. Yep, he
- 42:18Speaker 1: likes doing nature photographs.
- 42:20Speaker 6: I'm kind of trying to copy Seth.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Seth's been giving him some pointers. Yeah, you're doing good,
- 42:25Speaker 2: thank you. Yeah, go check out his photos.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Oh.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Also, for you people that are listening and not watching,
- 42:31Speaker 2: Jimmy is wearing a USS Jimmy Carter SSN twenty three
- 42:34Speaker 2: nuclear sub hat. I found that hat beach combing, probably
- 42:39Speaker 2: seventeen years ago. You want to know a story about
- 42:43Speaker 2: that hat. I don't even like telling this story because
- 42:46Speaker 2: it makes me feel sick. I had that hat for
- 42:50Speaker 2: years and years, and it got real moldy, and I
- 42:53Speaker 2: looked at it for a couple of years. I looked
- 42:55Speaker 2: at it and I thought, I'm gonna burn that hat.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I don't know why, just because I was in a
- 43:01Speaker 2: real clean up mood. You ever get a real cleanup mood?
- 43:05Speaker 2: And I assembled my burn pile and gassed it, got
- 43:09Speaker 2: all my gas on it, yanked it out the last second. No,
- 43:12Speaker 2: and I threw the hat on there. It seems like
- 43:14Speaker 2: something from a movie. I threw the hat on there,
- 43:16Speaker 2: but the eruption on the when it catches ye shot
- 43:22Speaker 2: the hat really off the burn pile. And then I
- 43:27Speaker 2: felt that I was being spoken to by a divine message.
- 43:32Speaker 2: You got to serendipity. And I looked up at the
- 43:35Speaker 2: skies and I said, never will I ever again attempt
- 43:39Speaker 2: to dispose of this us as Jimmy Carter hat.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Do you like to think that the captain of that
- 43:44Speaker 3: sub like they surface, He opened, took the look around
- 43:48Speaker 3: his hat blew off.
- 43:49Speaker 2: He the captain the sub was down there and he
- 43:54Speaker 2: surfaced because he thought some Rouskies, Rooskies, Chinese North Koreans,
- 44:00Speaker 2: bad players, Iranians, and he wanted to get a look
- 44:03Speaker 2: and he said, boys, bring me up because he felt
- 44:06Speaker 2: that he feels something wasn't right. And he stuck his
- 44:09Speaker 2: hat out, head up out of there to look out
- 44:11Speaker 2: that hatch.
- 44:12Speaker 1: And the wind took it and you found it.
- 44:15Speaker 2: And then he saw that enemy ship and just got
- 44:17Speaker 2: the I'm sure there's probably some kind of machine gun
- 44:20Speaker 2: monitor on the top of that sub and just like.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I can see it, see it happening, And.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Now that hat's mine, all right, James, thanks for coming on, buddy,
- 44:37Speaker 2: Thank you. Okay, send over your friend, our last and
- 44:40Speaker 2: final interview with today's youth. So y'all know what's coming.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Kaya, Yelson, yelchin, stay m yelchin, yelchin, yel chin. Kyle,
- 44:51Speaker 1: your father was not born.
- 44:52Speaker 2: In America, born in Turkey, Okay, And and he came
- 44:56Speaker 2: to America with not a high level of familiarity with
- 45:00Speaker 2: the American sporting traditions.
- 45:01Speaker 9: Not at all, not at all. No such thing as
- 45:04Speaker 9: hunting overseas in Turkey. Yeah, but probably a little fishing,
- 45:07Speaker 9: though I'm not too sure about that.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Move your mic closer to your pace. There gotta be
- 45:12Speaker 1: a little bit of fishing just about everywhere.
- 45:15Speaker 2: So however, your I mean, I know your parents. I'm
- 45:17Speaker 2: friendly with your parents. Your parents are great parents. Yeah,
- 45:20Speaker 2: they did a great job with you. I love you.
- 45:22Speaker 2: You're a great kid. I enjoy every minute I spend
- 45:24Speaker 2: with you. Thank you.
- 45:25Speaker 1: How has it been.
- 45:27Speaker 2: How has your parents received you becoming being getting into
- 45:32Speaker 2: fishing and hunting and all that when it wasn't something
- 45:35Speaker 2: that they were super familiar with.
- 45:37Speaker 9: I think my mom was more of me pro going
- 45:40Speaker 9: out hunting and fishing because her dad was a huge hunter.
- 45:44Speaker 9: Like I took his gun over. He had a few
- 45:46Speaker 9: rods that were broken. But my dad had none of that,
- 45:49Speaker 9: no experience of going out hunting, fishing, any of that.
- 45:52Speaker 9: So he's a little bit of skeptical about it. But
- 45:54Speaker 9: once I brought home the you know deer, you know fish,
- 45:57Speaker 9: all that stuff, it's just been amazing. He's been cooking
- 45:59Speaker 9: all the that get into some.
- 46:02Speaker 3: So they weren't squeamish at all about eating the wild
- 46:04Speaker 3: game or anything.
- 46:06Speaker 9: Now my dad's he he doesn't he says he doesn't
- 46:11Speaker 9: like doing it himself, so I think he wasn't too
- 46:14Speaker 9: mad about me doing it, yep.
- 46:16Speaker 2: But when Kay got his first year, his father came
- 46:19Speaker 2: over and we got it all processed up. His father
- 46:22Speaker 2: came over to check in out on the whole situation
- 46:24Speaker 2: and find out what was going on. And then and
- 46:26Speaker 2: then and then they.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Cooked a bunch of deersh yeah, a bunch of left great. Uh.
- 46:31Speaker 2: And you you anticipate that they like the fish, I think,
- 46:34Speaker 2: so move your mic close to your face. Well you
- 46:37Speaker 2: want to me is like like a finger off. Now
- 46:41Speaker 2: you're getting there.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh.
- 46:43Speaker 2: What was some of the highlights of your your weak fishing?
- 46:46Speaker 9: I think catching a link caught on my first day
- 46:49Speaker 9: was probably right off the bat. Yeah, because I've been told,
- 46:52Speaker 9: you know, people take weeks to catch one of those
- 46:55Speaker 9: and take the slot living. Yeah, and then take one
- 46:58Speaker 9: day to catch yellow eye for you.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yep.
- 47:02Speaker 2: He pulled it up and that soccer was like thirty
- 47:04Speaker 2: and eighth, right.
- 47:07Speaker 1: In the slot, very close, right in the.
- 47:09Speaker 9: Slot, really in that LINKA with Matt today was pretty fun.
- 47:13Speaker 1: So big one we had let go and that was cool.
- 47:16Speaker 9: But and you know, just hanging out here with everyone,
- 47:18Speaker 9: meeting everyone, it's been pretty fun.
- 47:20Speaker 1: All right, man. You like the food.
- 47:21Speaker 9: Yeah, I love it, eat like fish. Yeah. Yeah, all right,
- 47:26Speaker 9: thanks for coming on, thank you.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Oh, tell us about your sporting activities.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Oh, you're a basketball player.
- 47:31Speaker 9: Yeah. I've been through a bunch of different sports, you know.
- 47:34Speaker 9: I did soccer, swimming, basketball, you know, all of the above,
- 47:39Speaker 9: but been focused on basketball a lot recently. I did
- 47:42Speaker 9: football two years, but then I quit that because duck
- 47:44Speaker 9: season's coming.
- 47:45Speaker 1: So and you don't you don't anticipate, like you're not
- 47:50Speaker 1: trying to be like a college.
- 47:51Speaker 9: Basketball No, not at all. I don't. I'm not looking
- 47:53Speaker 9: for it.
- 47:54Speaker 5: Position are you playing?
- 47:55Speaker 9: I've been put it all. I'm probably more of a
- 47:57Speaker 9: big than a guard though, because there's not a lot
- 48:00Speaker 9: of big kids in our team, so I have to
- 48:02Speaker 9: kind of fill that spot.
- 48:03Speaker 1: As a tall kid.
- 48:06Speaker 9: Not really my thing. But you know, as long as
- 48:09Speaker 9: I'm out there, I do really care what I'm doing.
- 48:10Speaker 9: And you're gonna play again this year, hopefully varsity.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Yeah. And then is that like the kind of deal,
- 48:19Speaker 1: like the cliche.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Is that the football player like that, the girl girls
- 48:22Speaker 2: like the football players.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Do you find that to be true?
- 48:27Speaker 9: As a high scorer, when I was little, i'd watch
- 48:31Speaker 9: movies of high schools and I see all the jocks,
- 48:34Speaker 9: and I would think that, but nowadays it's kind of
- 48:37Speaker 9: not really so.
- 48:38Speaker 1: So women have a place in their heart for a
- 48:40Speaker 1: basketball player.
- 48:42Speaker 9: Not so sure about that either.
- 48:43Speaker 1: But what do they like these days, haunters, fishermen.
- 48:48Speaker 9: I mean, they'll go for anyone at this point.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Okay, thanks for coming on the show.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Thank you for having me, especially like the part where
- 49:00Speaker 2: you had the in depth thoughts about the girls. Ladies.
- 49:04Speaker 2: But real quick, you guys these days have your own
- 49:08Speaker 2: little vernacular. There's there's a there's a stage of a relationship.
- 49:15Speaker 2: This is the main thing I asked these guys about
- 49:16Speaker 2: because it's so puzzling to me. A relationship has a
- 49:20Speaker 2: stage called talking to? Yeah, can you explain For people
- 49:25Speaker 2: that are older, it's.
- 49:27Speaker 1: Kind of like.
- 49:30Speaker 9: Meeting when you meet them for the first time and
- 49:32Speaker 9: you get to know them, that kind of stage.
- 49:35Speaker 1: But what would have been the equivalent before they called
- 49:38Speaker 1: it talking to?
- 49:39Speaker 9: I remember talking to you about this a ways back.
- 49:41Speaker 9: You called it you guys are seeing someone? Is that
- 49:44Speaker 9: what you called it?
- 49:45Speaker 2: People used to say seeing yeah, and it meant like
- 49:48Speaker 2: definitely not like your girlfriend, boyfriend deal, but you were.
- 49:53Speaker 5: I was like friends with benefits.
- 49:55Speaker 2: Yeah, No, it's like you're like it was like it
- 49:57Speaker 2: was it was a very early stage.
- 50:00Speaker 9: That's that's exactly what talking to is.
- 50:02Speaker 2: So you don't ask, you don't you just you don't
- 50:05Speaker 2: verbalize to a girl that you're talking to her.
- 50:07Speaker 9: No, it kind of just happens.
- 50:09Speaker 1: Like you never say that I would like to be talking.
- 50:11Speaker 9: No, no, no, you don't ask.
- 50:12Speaker 1: It's like, hey, you want to talk because hey, I'm
- 50:19Speaker 1: talking to you.
- 50:20Speaker 9: Yeah, like going and someone say, I'm talking to this
- 50:23Speaker 9: girl right here.
- 50:23Speaker 2: So you but you get a feeling that you're talking.
- 50:26Speaker 9: It's kind of you can kind of tell after either
- 50:28Speaker 9: the first you hang outs if this is going to
- 50:30Speaker 9: go somewhere or not. So it's kind of implied that
- 50:32Speaker 9: if it does that you're talking.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Okay, and then but then the next step then you
- 50:36Speaker 2: would formalize it.
- 50:38Speaker 9: Yeah, with a you know sign if you want to
- 50:40Speaker 9: do you?
- 50:41Speaker 1: So, where do you have a girl? Girl? Someone?
- 50:44Speaker 9: Yeah, they're they're a thing.
- 50:47Speaker 1: So you got a formal girlfriend. He has a formal girlfriend.
- 50:49Speaker 1: I know that, you know.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I like her. I told her one day I would
- 50:54Speaker 2: rather need to die than her inconvenience.
- 50:58Speaker 9: Late to the bell to school.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Die I like that girl a lot. She's great.
- 51:06Speaker 1: So where you are you single? You got a girl?
- 51:09Speaker 9: Or I'm talking to someone, I'm in the early stages.
- 51:11Speaker 9: Gotcha you talk early talk seeing someone? Well you your
- 51:17Speaker 9: early talk right now stage. No, I'm just I'm in
- 51:21Speaker 9: the talk.
- 51:22Speaker 1: But you haven't talked about talking.
- 51:24Speaker 9: No, not talked about talking.
- 51:26Speaker 1: So if you asked her, would she say I'm talking
- 51:29Speaker 1: to someone? Yeah? How do you know that she knows?
- 51:31Speaker 1: That's a great question. Is she right now somewhere saying
- 51:35Speaker 1: she's talking to you? Or would she be like, I'm
- 51:37Speaker 1: what him? No, I'm not.
- 51:40Speaker 9: I'm not sure how that works, because I think you
- 51:43Speaker 9: ask are we talking? You kind of just hope that
- 51:45Speaker 9: they are, Like, you know, have enough respect to say like, yeah,
- 51:51Speaker 9: I'm You don't say I'm talking to someone, but you
- 51:54Speaker 9: don't say I'm taking either.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Do you ever worry We're not gonna go on about
- 51:58Speaker 2: this all night? But like, do you ever worry that
- 52:02Speaker 2: she doesn't even know you're talking? And here you are
- 52:05Speaker 2: talking about talking to her and she doesn't know that
- 52:09Speaker 2: the talk is happening.
- 52:10Speaker 9: Could be, but then there's always another girl to talk
- 52:13Speaker 9: to you.
- 52:14Speaker 3: That's right.
- 52:17Speaker 9: I'm not saying there's a list, but there's always someone else.
- 52:22Speaker 5: Well, you should throw that you're a deep dropper.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Now to your repertoire.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, now you know this kid. All the kids
- 52:28Speaker 2: I had four? How many kids are on my boat today?
- 52:32Speaker 1: Four? No, I had three my entire deep drop session.
- 52:36Speaker 2: They were all three, I'm not kidding from from before
- 52:39Speaker 2: I began to after I quit, they were all asleep
- 52:42Speaker 2: in the boat.
- 52:42Speaker 9: I woke up a sheet times to you deep dropping.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Yeah, didn't offer a hand.
- 52:51Speaker 9: I was knocked out, all right.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Well, thanks for coming on, Kyle.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Thank you appreciate it.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Man. Of course, onto the news, the actual news.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Oh, this is a little bit of your news because
- 53:07Speaker 2: this is something that guy wrote in about TSS.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Here's the deal. That's interesting.
- 53:12Speaker 2: The other day of my wife comes in the house
- 53:15Speaker 2: all worked up, seth checking on something. She comes in
- 53:20Speaker 2: the house all worked up because someone's flying a drone
- 53:22Speaker 2: over the house and I was going to shoot the
- 53:26Speaker 2: drone but then it was gone. Someone was saying, if
- 53:31Speaker 2: they stopped making TSS for Turkey hunters, there now is
- 53:37Speaker 2: anti drone TSS from European manufacturers, an anti drone load.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Okay, so a load.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Design if you bought a shotgun load for drones. They
- 53:53Speaker 2: loaded with number seven tungsten five shots for one hundred bucks.
- 54:00Speaker 3: So it's a box of turkey shot.
- 54:01Speaker 2: It's a tungsten drone twelve gauge tungsten drone two and
- 54:08Speaker 2: three quarter inch casing. Okay, one in a eighth So
- 54:14Speaker 2: a drone round has one in a eight ounce tungsten
- 54:18Speaker 2: one in the eight ounce of tungsten shot a turkey
- 54:20Speaker 2: load standard TSS load one in three quarters ounce, Okay,
- 54:29Speaker 2: a turkey a drone round two and three quarter your
- 54:32Speaker 2: standard turkey round three inch, So it's a little shorter,
- 54:35Speaker 2: a little less shot. Your typical drone round muscle velocity
- 54:42Speaker 2: thirteen twenty nine feet per second, a turkey load twelve
- 54:48Speaker 2: hundred feet per second. The pellet count on a drone
- 54:51Speaker 2: round two hundred and eleven pellets on a turkey round
- 54:56Speaker 2: three point thirty.
- 55:00Speaker 3: Now, why is tungsten better for drones than.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Lad Probably all the same reasons. Flies faster, sure, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 55:09Speaker 2: or not? Should say fly sorry? Holds you know right, heavier,
- 55:14Speaker 2: better penetrator.
- 55:18Speaker 3: Drone round might Turkey hunters might have start looking into
- 55:21Speaker 3: drone rounds when things get tough.
- 55:23Speaker 1: Yeah, here's another interesting news bit. So you know.
- 55:31Speaker 2: In Canada, Alberta opened up a thing they call in
- 55:35Speaker 2: twenty twenty five, they opened this up. This is a
- 55:38Speaker 2: very interesting program. They opened up a program called the
- 55:43Speaker 2: Wildlife Responder Program where it allows an Alberta resident to
- 55:50Speaker 2: apply for an opportunity to respond to problem wildlife issues
- 55:55Speaker 2: throughout the province. They opened the program for elk and grizzlies.
- 56:05Speaker 2: So a guy wrote in here who applied for the program,
- 56:12Speaker 2: got a call and went out and got a problem
- 56:15Speaker 2: grizzly that would never fly in the United States. Man, Yeah,
- 56:20Speaker 2: got a problem, got a problem grizzly. It'd be great
- 56:24Speaker 2: if they could do it here. But they'll just never fly.
- 56:29Speaker 2: It's a great idea.
- 56:30Speaker 3: I want to I'd like to know if they're like
- 56:32Speaker 3: escorted by a fishing game official when they're doing it,
- 56:35Speaker 3: or they just.
- 56:35Speaker 2: Go I don't believe, so, man, I don't believe. So
- 56:39Speaker 2: you can apply for a zone. Okay, it's open for
- 56:41Speaker 2: elker grizzlies. The albert is broken into three zones. Applicants
- 56:46Speaker 2: apply for a zone. Okay, it's a true lottery draw.
- 56:55Speaker 2: But if you're a successful applicant, that requires you got
- 56:58Speaker 2: to be on twenty four hour notice.
- 57:02Speaker 3: So that's right now, that would be the basically the
- 57:05Speaker 3: only opportunity to get a grizzly in Canada.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Correct, like BC ban their grizzly Okay, I got you, Yeah, gotcha.
- 57:14Speaker 2: So you get a call that some guy's got a
- 57:16Speaker 2: problem bear, you got twenty four hours to get over there,
- 57:19Speaker 2: and instead of because think about the alternative, like what
- 57:21Speaker 2: they do, like what they do in my neighborhood when
- 57:23Speaker 2: there's a problem bear, they send a game warding out
- 57:26Speaker 2: and he's got the barrel traps and all that barrel
- 57:28Speaker 2: traps them and they euthanize them and throw them a dump.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Yeah, if it's a.
- 57:31Speaker 3: Black bear, yeah, give the opportunity to a hunter.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Like image you call them be like, hey, hurry up.
- 57:36Speaker 5: Yep, I'm curious, Brody. You made a good point, like
- 57:39Speaker 5: is there a game war that goes out with them?
- 57:41Speaker 5: How are they iding the problem grizzly bear? How do
- 57:44Speaker 5: they know which ones will.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Be sure that the game warden gets involved? Determined? Actually
- 57:48Speaker 1: is a problem.
- 57:49Speaker 3: Yeah, It's a lot different than going and shooting you know,
- 57:52Speaker 3: some elk that are raising a haystack.
- 57:54Speaker 2: You know, here's another news story This is the saddest
- 57:58Speaker 2: is when the news show takes a sad turn. Cornell
- 58:01Speaker 2: bans wild game processing in dorms. What a long and
- 58:04Speaker 2: sordid story. This is so Yeah. What I like about
- 58:08Speaker 2: the story this is the New York Times. What I
- 58:09Speaker 2: like about the story is all the quotes from The
- 58:12Speaker 2: Hunter are pulled from our podcast, Interview with the Hunter. Yeah,
- 58:16Speaker 2: and it talks about our podcast. In the New York
- 58:18Speaker 2: Times article about the situation, some I put this headline
- 58:25Speaker 2: up on social media and some jack off.
- 58:27Speaker 1: Was like, they should have never been gloating about it.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Never be an issue.
- 58:31Speaker 2: If they weren't gloating about it, that's not what made
- 58:34Speaker 2: it an issue. No, them gloating about it didn't. It
- 58:38Speaker 2: was an issue long before anybody said a word about it.
- 58:41Speaker 2: What happened was these two guys at Cornell went out
- 58:46Speaker 2: and we interviewed them.
- 58:47Speaker 1: One of them.
- 58:49Speaker 2: They went out bear hunting and got a bear. They
- 58:51Speaker 2: looked at the rules. They thought about going to friends
- 58:56Speaker 2: didn't work out. They looked at the rules and realized
- 58:58Speaker 2: there's not a rule like you can you can prepare
- 59:01Speaker 2: food in the door in like the dormitory kitchen. They
- 59:04Speaker 2: went to the dormitory kitchen, got all their stuff, got
- 59:07Speaker 2: a tarp and everything, and kept it all clean. Went
- 59:08Speaker 2: to the dormitory kitchen and processed their bear. A bunch
- 59:11Speaker 2: of students then a bunch of whiny kids had a
- 59:15Speaker 2: little shit fit, and they called the cops, and they
- 59:17Speaker 2: called the university people. The game wardens said they didn't
- 59:21Speaker 2: do anything wrong. They had they killed the bear legally,
- 59:23Speaker 2: they had a permit. It's not against the rule to
- 59:25Speaker 2: butcher bear at Cornell. Nothing happened to them. Cornell waited
- 59:30Speaker 2: appreciable amount of time. And now the new student handbook
- 59:33Speaker 2: says no cutting up, no processing game animals in the
- 59:38Speaker 2: dormitory kitchen. The spokesperson for this is what really gets
- 59:44Speaker 2: my goal. It's not so much the rule. It's not
- 59:46Speaker 2: so much the rule. What gets my goat is that
- 59:49Speaker 2: the spokesperson said, bring it to a processor.
- 59:53Speaker 9: Hm.
- 59:55Speaker 2: No, the makeup, make an area for process.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Sure. Yeah, I still think of these kids as American heroes. Yep.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: Now that's that's too bad.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Yeah, go to Penn State.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: You know that they let you process there. I mean,
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: no one asked. They're pretty friendly that stuff. At least
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: they used to be. Yeah, they used to be a comment.
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: Here's a comment from the New York Times comment section.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: Bear meat is exceedingly nasty. Only fools are starving People
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: eat bears, same with dog, same with venison, and elk. Beef, pork,
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: and chicken make up the Holy Trinity of meat. You
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: don't need to eat any other flesh unless you can't
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: afford one of those three. And don't talk to me
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: about fish and seafood. Bears are much better than that
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: yucky stuff.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, beans are better than the
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Holy Trinity of meats. That's a comment, not a big
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: beat guy.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: So that's all over.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: I thought about you know, I'm out of the game here.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: I already went to school and did all that. I'm
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: not going back to school. I was deeply offended. Yeah,
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: and I called for a boycott. I called for a
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: boycott of Cornell, not that that would have any impact
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: on anything. And it was a joke when I said that,
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: but still, yeah, it's too bad. You know, there's a
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: couple of good kids, because for a minute they were
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: the coolest school in the country.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Yeah, they were the coolest school in the country.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: We're gonna keep using that bird app.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: I'm still gonna use my Merlin app. I still got friends.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: I still count the Cornell people among my friends. They
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: still made the one the like, you know, one of
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: the top five greatest apps ever made, being like it's
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: like up there with on X.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: The people who made that app, though probably I wouldn't
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: agree with that either.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: No, well, some of the people that made that app.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: I know that some people that worked on that app
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: or hunters.
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, so maybe they should be connected and the
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: next bear could be skinned at the Cornell lab Ornithology.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: There you go. That's a good idea. Okay.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: From now, we're gonna go into We're gonna close the
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: show out. We're gonna go and do this is gonna
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: be the last news segment on the show. We're gonna
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: do our We're gonna talk about an avian botulism outbreak
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: that is killing thousands of ducks. Here's Mark Okay, right now,
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: we're joined by Jeff McCreery, who's the director of operations
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: for the Western region of Ducks Unlimited. We're gonna be
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: talking about something that's going on with an avian botulism
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: outbreak that is killed somewhere around ten thousand ducks this year.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: And where this is happening is the Klamath Basin. Jeff,
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: do you mind explaining to people what is the Klamath
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Base and what does it mean to ducks?
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: Yes, Steve, the klam Of Basin is one of the
- 1:03:05Speaker 7: most important areas for waterfowl in North America. Is essentially
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: the neck of the hour glass for the Pacific Flyway
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: from birds coming from the Prairies and Alaska down to California.
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: And it serves every part of the life cycle for
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: birds from production, migration, wintering, and multi.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: And then what is how many ducks utilize that area?
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Is there a way to take a stab at that?
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: Sure? And not as many as they're used to. In
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: the nineteen fifties they counted three million pintails just on
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: one of one part of the wildlife refugees at Tuley
- 1:03:41Speaker 7: Lake Refuge up there. So there's three million pintails. There's
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: not three million pintills alive today on the planet. Wow,
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: I would say, yeah, it's been a big it's been
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: a huge fall from the highest way back in the
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: last part of the nineteen hundreds. There but approximately seventy
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: five percent of all water well in North America use
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: or in the Pacific Flyway, sorry, use the climate basin
- 1:04:06Speaker 7: and the Central Valley or Great Salt Lake at one
- 1:04:08Speaker 7: point during their life cycle. So it's critically important for
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: just a huge number of Pacific Flyway population.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Okay, now, what is what is avian botulism?
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Like when I think of the word botulism, I think
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: of the in the old days, if you didn't properly
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: can veget like if you were home canning, that was
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: your risk that you would screw up a home canning
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: job and and kill your family with botulism. But what
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: is avian botulism?
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: How does it? How is it living in the water.
- 1:04:45Speaker 7: It's very similar to the same bacterium that you'll find
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: when you don't can your food rate, But aviian bosulism
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: is a bacteria that lives in soils. It uh proliferates
- 1:04:58Speaker 7: in shallow warm water water and high temperatures, which is
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: exactly what we're staying in the two refuges right now.
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: Okayilism in and of itself doesn't kill birds, but it
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: has a neurotoxin that gets released when the birds ingest
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: let's say larvae or grubs that are carrying this bacteria,
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: and when the neurotoxin gets to a certain threshold, it
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: causes a paralytic effect on these birds. So what happens
- 1:05:24Speaker 7: is the birds slowly and sometimes very rapidly start to
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: be paralyzed and their neck starts to droop and they
- 1:05:30Speaker 7: can't hold their neck up and their head falls in
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: the water and they drowned. So they're not dead directly
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: from botulism, but the secondary effects of the neurotoxin.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Oh no kidding, Okay, yeah, that's horrible. But it's naturally occurring.
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: Absolutely, it's naturally. It happens every year in the Klamath Basin.
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: It happens all over the Inner mount West. We've had
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: massive die offs in the early nineties and Great Salt
- 1:05:55Speaker 7: Lake there's a million birds that died there from a
- 1:05:57Speaker 7: botulism outbreak. So it's a nat occurring thing. But in
- 1:06:01Speaker 7: the Klamat Basin it's largely preventable.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: And then it's bad. It got bad this year because
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: then you already alluded to this. It got bad this
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: year because water levels are low and the water is hot.
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: Absolutely, that's what's going on right now. So everywhere across
- 1:06:18Speaker 7: the West. If your listeners are thinking about what they're
- 1:06:20Speaker 7: going to be doing this fall. It's going to be
- 1:06:22Speaker 7: hot and dry. There was almost no snowpack in the West,
- 1:06:24Speaker 7: and Klamat was exactly the same. There's very little, if
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: any snowpack on the ground. Great spring rain, lots of
- 1:06:31Speaker 7: great wetlands, lots of great productivity from a waterfowl perspective,
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: but that water's all done. The snow was not releasing
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: the groundwater and slow, so we're running out of water.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: And these this this approximate ten thousand ducks that died.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: When did this die off? When did you start seeing
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: evidence of this die off?
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: We started seeing this evidence about a month ago or
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: so they started finding the first few birds, which is
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: actually about maybe three weeks earlier than when we typically
- 1:07:00Speaker 7: start seeing dead ducks up there, which is about now.
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: And as the temperatures are increasing the water levels are dropping,
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: the number of birds that were estimating or dying each
- 1:07:11Speaker 7: day continues to increase, and at some point it's going double.
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: You had one hundred last yesterday, you have three hundred
- 1:07:18Speaker 7: a day. So we're the cumulative estimates about ten thousand,
- 1:07:22Speaker 7: maybe possibly more.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: Okay, so this is happening. It's still happening. We're not
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: talking about a thing that was going on, and we're
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: not talking about old news here, and no.
- 1:07:33Speaker 7: It's not, and it's it's getting to a point where
- 1:07:35Speaker 7: it's going to be really critical as when you think
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: about exponential growth doubling again today. I mean, we're talking
- 1:07:43Speaker 7: one hundred thousand ducklings were produced on these two refuges
- 1:07:46Speaker 7: this year alone, and we've got hundreds of thousands of
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: other birds that are migrating into these wetlands and when
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: they arrive, they molt, and so you've got one hundred
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: thousand ducklings that can't really fly. You've got a couple
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: hundred thousand other birds that are losing their flight feathers
- 1:08:02Speaker 7: and can't fly, so they're trapped in the producing botulism.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: Got it, Uh, Explain to me what it requires, like
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: there's a remedy or there's a there's a partial remedy,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: or there's a hope of a remedy. Explain what needs
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: to happen here that would would that would solve this
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: problem or help solve this problem.
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: Well, the answer is the one thing that's very hard
- 1:08:28Speaker 7: to get, and that's water. The climate based and if
- 1:08:31Speaker 7: it's not known for amazing waterfowl, amazing waterfowl hunting. It's
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: known for the water complex that arise between endangered species
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: and agriculture and wildlife. So what you can do is
- 1:08:44Speaker 7: you can get more water. You can get what if
- 1:08:47Speaker 7: that's coming out of the lake, it's going to be
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: cooler than what's in the wetlands, it's going to be fresher.
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: You can circulate that water, you can make it deeper
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: to cover the mudflats where the botulism is growing. So
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: the recipe is simple, just add water. The complicated thing
- 1:09:01Speaker 7: is whose water are you going to add and how
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: are you going to do that?
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, and tell me about that.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: What is how do you do it?
- 1:09:09Speaker 7: Well? Why this is even a problem is because we're
- 1:09:13Speaker 7: the West. If for those of us or Westerners, we've
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: noticed over the last thirty years, snowpack is getting smaller,
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: it's evaporating quicker. There's essentially a drying trend that's happening
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: in the western United States, and Klamas is no different
- 1:09:27Speaker 7: than anywhere else. The challenge is is that there's demands
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: on water from endangered fish that have a biological opinion
- 1:09:34Speaker 7: to keep water in the upper lake or to run
- 1:09:36Speaker 7: water down the river, and then the third pot of
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: water that's out there is the agricultural water for that
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: irrigation project, and all three of these pots of water
- 1:09:45Speaker 7: are suffering. However, the Clan of water Uses Association and
- 1:09:49Speaker 7: the irrigation districts are working with NGOs, are working with
- 1:09:53Speaker 7: tribes and agencies to find a way where we can
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: be creative and get past the conflict that's out there
- 1:10:00Speaker 7: and get on towards collaboration, because right now everybody's suffering.
- 1:10:04Speaker 7: Fish are suffering, ducks are suffering, People are suffering because
- 1:10:07Speaker 7: of the conflict, and really the only way out is collaboration.
- 1:10:10Speaker 7: And water users are proposing a flow through concept where
- 1:10:14Speaker 7: we would take some of these limited water supplies that
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: are still there, run them through the irrigation project down
- 1:10:20Speaker 7: into the wetlands, raise the water, circulate the water, cool
- 1:10:23Speaker 7: the water, and then we would pump it back out
- 1:10:26Speaker 7: into the river. You're removing nights, you're removing all the
- 1:10:29Speaker 7: nitrogen and phosporus loading nets in the water from the
- 1:10:32Speaker 7: upper lake, You're recharging the groundwater, and you're helping to
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: save hundreds of thousands of Dutch local economy and endangered species.
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: It's this amazing idea for collaboration and we just need
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: a little bit of water to do it.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: And then on that formula where you're pulling water out
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: of a reserve system, using it to increase water in
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: the wetland, moving it to the river system where it's
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: going to benefit to salmon, you know as they come
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: up for spawning runs. What does it do for the
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: people that are using that water to irrigate crops.
- 1:11:12Speaker 7: That's the really challenging thing here, and agriculture is suffering.
- 1:11:16Speaker 7: So they're getting they're getting about sixty three of their
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: promised allotment from the Bureau of Reclamation. And so what
- 1:11:25Speaker 7: they're proposing to do is they're proposing to take this
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: water and use one hundred percent of this water for
- 1:11:31Speaker 7: this flow through concept for the environment, for the ducks,
- 1:11:35Speaker 7: for the wetlands, for the fish, as a example of
- 1:11:40Speaker 7: leadership to change the paradigm from conflict to collaboration. So
- 1:11:46Speaker 7: they're suffering, but they're still willing to do it because
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: in the long run, if we don't help recover these
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: fish that are really dominating how water is driven, we're
- 1:11:57Speaker 7: never going to be able to recover these wetlands. We're
- 1:11:59Speaker 7: never going to be able to to stop this bachulism
- 1:12:01Speaker 7: cycle and we're not going to be able to have
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: healthy communities and healthy economies. And so water users are
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: really stepping up and taking the leadership approach of doing
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: something different and finding the collaborative solution versus a conflictory.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: What is the what is the entity that represents water users?
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: So you're not going out and striking a deal with
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: every farmer about their their water. They must have a
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: collective of sorts. What what is that?
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: That's the Klamat Water Users Association. So they represent the
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: primary or all the water districts that are in and
- 1:12:39Speaker 7: associated with the Klamat Project. There's three main ones. Klamath
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: Irrigation District, the Tully Lake Irrigation District, and the Claim
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: With Drainage District. Are the are the biggest ones within
- 1:12:49Speaker 7: there and the water users represent them as well as
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: some other smaller districts.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: So if it if this water user's group is recognizing
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: the dire situation and they're allowing that they're agreeing to
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: in this emergency situation to let water go and let
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: it go for wildlife, what what does come of their
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: of of their issue, Like what does come of the crops?
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: Is there a is there a is there a sacrifice
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: on crop output?
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: I mean there has to be, right.
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: Yeah, for sure. And you know they there's an allocation
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: that they're given in April by the Bureau of Reclamation
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: about how much water is going to be available this year,
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: and so they've already made their planting plan. The crops
- 1:13:32Speaker 7: are planting now, we're going into harvest time right now,
- 1:13:35Speaker 7: so essentially they've already made their decisions about how much
- 1:13:39Speaker 7: or how they're going to use the limited water that
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: they have. So this water isn't going to necessarily help
- 1:13:46Speaker 7: directly on the crops that are in the ground. And
- 1:13:48Speaker 7: so that's why they're able to because they've already made
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: they've already done the sacrifice, they're able to do this type.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Of innovative Understood, Now, let's let's jump down the road.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: Like you said, we're looking at long term trends here, right,
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: This is not this is not an anomaly. Is what's
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: happening this year? And the sacrifice you're talking about in
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: the collaboration you're talking about is is it applicable next year?
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Or is next year just becomes its own question all
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: over again.
- 1:14:23Speaker 7: Well, you know, there's there's that's a great question. When
- 1:14:26Speaker 7: I think about conservation, I think about a couple of things.
- 1:14:28Speaker 7: I think about community, and I think about leadership. And
- 1:14:32Speaker 7: to do any kind of conservation of the planmatation, it
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: requires essentially every everybody. Everything is connected to everything else.
- 1:14:41Speaker 7: The politics, the economy, the social the natural resources. They're
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: all driven by this drop of water, and everything is
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: connected to that. And if we don't have broad agreement
- 1:14:49Speaker 7: about a path forward with the entire community, we're never
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: going to change the cycle that we're on. Yeah, But
- 1:14:56Speaker 7: in order to engage that community, you have to have leadership.
- 1:14:58Speaker 7: Somebody has to be doing something a little bit different
- 1:15:01Speaker 7: in order to inspire others to do something similar. Again,
- 1:15:04Speaker 7: and that's what's happening this year is water users is
- 1:15:07Speaker 7: doing something that they've never done before. They're committed to
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: use this water for one hundred percent of these other purposes,
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: not for agriculture. That is leadership, and that is studying
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: a model that we want our tribal partners and our
- 1:15:21Speaker 7: agency partners to also emulate too next year. Yeah, because
- 1:15:25Speaker 7: without them, without those partners, well without the agencies, and
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: without the tribes are agreeing and collaborating on how to
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: make this work. It's not going to be it's not
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: going to be possible, but something has to be different,
- 1:15:38Speaker 7: something has to be that spark that changes of the
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: past and creates a new future. And that's what's happening
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: this year. And that's what's significant, and that's been really
- 1:15:48Speaker 7: a huge focus Abduction Limited over the next last six years,
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: is that we've really tried to create an environment through
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: extensive relationship building with the agencies, with irrigation users, water users,
- 1:16:01Speaker 7: with the tribes to create an environment and which this
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: little spark can grow and become a flame and happen.
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: And that's happening this year. And so it's the president
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: of the Water Users Association. He's really making a big
- 1:16:16Speaker 7: difference through his leadership bringing this community together to help
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: and support this effort.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: So let's jump from next year back into this year.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: Do you feel that this action is going to like
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: set up to be successful or make the situation not
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: as dire for Ducks as it would otherwise be? Like,
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: do you feel that there's going to be some kind
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: of that there's the potential for like an immediate remedy
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: right now or is that not in the cards for
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: this year.
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: I think there's a media. I think there's opportunity. I've
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: been it's a man, it's a torturous road. It's been
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: a pretty intense last couple of months working on this.
- 1:16:57Speaker 7: But I think that there's a path. I think that
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: there's water available, and I think that there's political will
- 1:17:02Speaker 7: to get that water down to the refuges this year.
- 1:17:05Speaker 7: It's still not too late, and I know water users
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: and in the agencies and all the partners have been
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: really working hard on that. And what is going to
- 1:17:15Speaker 7: drive what happens in the future is what happens this year.
- 1:17:19Speaker 7: And the blame that irrigation and agriculture gets a lot
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: is you're just going to take that water for agriculture. Yeah,
- 1:17:28Speaker 7: we say it's going to the refuge, You're just going
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: to take it. Well, they're saying no, No, we can
- 1:17:32Speaker 7: prove up. We can show you all the math, we
- 1:17:35Speaker 7: can show you all the records that we are going
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: to do exactly what we say, and that water is
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: going to go for this flow through purpose. And so
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: everybody's kind of watching that when that water comes that
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: agriculture sticks to what they said they were going to
- 1:17:48Speaker 7: do and demonstrates the model of success that can be
- 1:17:51Speaker 7: relied upon for next year, and that's what's going to
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: help the future.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: All Right, Man, I would love to have you at
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: the end of this season. I would love to have
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: you come back on and give kind of a snapshot
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: of what happened and the sequence of events and how
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: it played out.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: We'd love to hear more.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: About it, absolutely.
- 1:18:15Speaker 7: I'm hopeful.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I look forward to hearing more about it again.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Joined by Jeff McCreary, the director of operations for the
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: Western region of Ducks Unlimited, talking about the Klamath Base
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: and Avian Bochlism outbreak and the flow through water solution. Again,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Jeff's from Ducks Unlimited has been working on this issue,
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: and Jeff, thanks for explaining everything, and man, good luck
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: to you and good luck to the water users and
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: producers and trying to figure out a solution to this issue.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I appreciate it absolutely.
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: Thanks for having us on.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Thanks Ben. All Right, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: That concludes the special episode of the news show broadcasting
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: from Fish Camp and Southeast Alaska.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Tune in next week.
