- 0:18Speaker 1: Returned to Glory podcast Husker Strong Baby, there you go,
- 0:26Speaker 1: you know, first time since twenty sixteen, Hunter Zarbniki, Austin Rose,
- 0:33Speaker 1: Dakota Free Tank Guys. I don't I have not even
- 0:37Speaker 1: set in all the feelings yet. It's just been a
- 0:42Speaker 1: whole bunch of emotions since Saturday nights.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Man, I'm speechless right now.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Feels good.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Let's just let's get off the jump. But that was
- 0:55Speaker 4: the most fun Husker tailgate slash game day I've had. Yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 4: I a mile. It was fun. Like there wasn't a
- 1:02Speaker 4: lot of beat downtown. I mean, Caller fans weren't and
- 1:06Speaker 4: they weren't talking a lot of shit before the game.
- 1:09Speaker 4: We were to them, but they weren't saying too much.
- 1:12Speaker 3: That's what you do when you're on the road. You
- 1:13Speaker 3: don't say a whole lot while you're surrounded by the enemy.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Were we edgy? Were we not over the top? But
- 1:22Speaker 1: were we getting after him a little bit?
- 1:24Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:25Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 1: That was the vibe I got just from talking to
- 1:30Speaker 1: you in general, but also in the stadium. Will Compton
- 1:34Speaker 1: saws video that went on right before the tunnel walk
- 1:37Speaker 1: like he had in week one. Watching that, I'm like, Wow,
- 1:40Speaker 1: like they're luttons and stuff go and I love it,
- 1:43Speaker 1: like I love everything about it. And man did the
- 1:46Speaker 1: results show on Saturday? We talked how big of a
- 1:51Speaker 1: game it was, guys on Wednesday when't now was the
- 1:57Speaker 1: last time that we've won a game like this of
- 2:01Speaker 1: this magnitude. And I'm saying this because I've already heard
- 2:06Speaker 1: the maybe Colorado isn't that good line, Maybe they'll probably
- 2:11Speaker 1: go three and nine, maybe they'll, you know, do what
- 2:13Speaker 1: they did last year. I get that, and I'm not
- 2:15Speaker 1: saying I disagree with that. Just the magnitude and the
- 2:19Speaker 1: hype of this game leading up to it, and then
- 2:22Speaker 1: us showing up in not only performing, but we didn't
- 2:25Speaker 1: beat ourselves up really at all.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It was a.
- 2:28Speaker 1: True, strong, solid performance what we wanted to see. That
- 2:33Speaker 1: to me speaks volumes for this team, no matter what
- 2:36Speaker 1: we thought how the second half.
- 2:37Speaker 2: What we're going to talk about that, but.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Just the magnitude of the game, showing up doing what
- 2:44Speaker 1: we did in that first half, whoa, and then getting
- 2:48Speaker 1: a win.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Yeah, the first half was absolutely insane. I can't imagine
- 2:55Speaker 3: what the crowd was like inside. You couldn't really hear
- 2:57Speaker 3: it that well on TV which is a little disappointing.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I was kind of hoping you get a little more
- 3:00Speaker 3: of that on the TV side.
- 3:02Speaker 4: But see, I knew that with NBC though they they
- 3:05Speaker 4: never have great sound. You wouldn't be able to hear
- 3:07Speaker 4: it at all. But but it sounded pretty loud.
- 3:11Speaker 3: The commentators were saying that it was really loud in there.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I don't even want to I'm gonna say this once
- 3:16Speaker 1: and be done with it for the rest of the episode.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Cole McCoy, who sucks.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Probably not the game you want to put your guy
- 3:25Speaker 3: on first his first time on TV. Like, I don't
- 3:28Speaker 3: know why you do a night game with like popular
- 3:32Speaker 3: teams for your first game, Like, maybe give him a
- 3:36Speaker 3: couple of reps on some lower level games first.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I feel a shame that we're even talking about him
- 3:41Speaker 1: in the first ten minutes of this podcast, but I
- 3:43Speaker 1: had to say it because it was not good. But
- 3:48Speaker 1: I do think you could tell. The stadium was rocking
- 3:53Speaker 1: as expected. The students were there early seeing a lot
- 3:56Speaker 1: of the pregame stuff was great. Again, nothing that was
- 4:00Speaker 1: like over the top, but like Rule said, Saving Nebraska
- 4:04Speaker 1: nice until Sunday, right it it.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Was well deserved, well worth it.
- 4:09Speaker 1: We did what we needed to do in a big
- 4:11Speaker 1: game for the first time in a long time, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: Husker Nation we can say it's happy starting out the
- 4:17Speaker 1: year two and no first time since twenty sixteen, and
- 4:22Speaker 1: as of recently this afternoon, cracking back in the top
- 4:26Speaker 1: twenty five in both the AP and coaches full.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Who that's scary. I don't know how I feel about
- 4:35Speaker 3: being top twenty five, But what.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Does that mean? What does that say people believing?
- 4:41Speaker 4: Now?
- 4:42Speaker 3: I don't know. Last time we're twenty one, we got
- 4:45Speaker 3: we got rocked.
- 4:46Speaker 4: So it helps that like twenty one through twenty four
- 4:51Speaker 4: all us.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I think people aren't doing as well. And
- 4:56Speaker 3: then like there is a little bit of a preconceived
- 5:01Speaker 3: notion of what a Matt Rule led team does in
- 5:03Speaker 3: year two, and I think that's being applied a little
- 5:07Speaker 3: bit to what the expectation is for this year. But
- 5:12Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:13Speaker 1: We'll see I As you may know, I'm usually not
- 5:19Speaker 1: the optimist or I am always trying to find the
- 5:25Speaker 1: nitpick things. I wanted to start off though, being very
- 5:29Speaker 1: very positive and enjoying a win like this because we
- 5:33Speaker 1: haven't been able to do it, and just leading up
- 5:36Speaker 1: to it. I still I'm my prediction. I just I
- 5:39Speaker 1: didn't want to think and then get my hopes and
- 5:42Speaker 1: my heart stabbed again like it has time after time
- 5:46Speaker 1: after time.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I was so nervous at the start of Like my
- 5:50Speaker 3: heart rate is my resting heart rate is forty eight
- 5:52Speaker 3: beats per minute, which I mean that's resting. But my
- 5:54Speaker 3: heart rate was at like ninety five at the kickoff
- 5:57Speaker 3: and I was just sitting on the couch watching it.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I caught my leg.
- 6:02Speaker 1: My legs are just like moving back and forth, just
- 6:04Speaker 1: sitting there tapping my foot like right before the game started.
- 6:07Speaker 3: It was, Oh my gosh.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Oh it was. It was so fun. I just I
- 6:12Speaker 2: want to enjoy it, guys, I really do.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I I don't want to go over the top and
- 6:18Speaker 1: and now say we're the best team ever and we're
- 6:21Speaker 1: playoff bound. But at the same time, I want to
- 6:24Speaker 1: enjoy performing well against an opponent that want in our
- 6:31Speaker 1: best shot, like they beat us, they beat us three
- 6:33Speaker 1: times in a row, like and our rival. It just
- 6:37Speaker 1: for a lot of reasons, we should be enjoying this win.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And I mean, you know they are coming in with
- 6:43Speaker 3: two guys who could be top ten picks. And they're
- 6:47Speaker 3: our defense like killer against them.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So just the recap, how we're gonna do these Sunday
- 6:55Speaker 1: or Monday morning released episodes. We're just gonna point out
- 6:58Speaker 1: key headlines, key topic to talk about, just rotate through him,
- 7:03Speaker 1: lead to some good conversation. I want to start there, Austin,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you mentioned the defense. I know this is a very
- 7:10Speaker 1: broad topic, but as rule said after the game on Saturday,
- 7:15Speaker 1: our entire defense is a star like they showed up
- 7:20Speaker 1: against a very very potent Colorado offense has shown to
- 7:24Speaker 1: do a lot of things. I mean, Dak, you said it.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Start with you. I mean you said it. You thought
- 7:29Speaker 1: game was gonna be in the thirties, a shootout. I
- 7:32Speaker 1: didn't want it to be.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I was hoping it wouldn't. It didn't get there.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, I'm just gonna get off the jump here
- 7:39Speaker 4: and say the first half I watched every single play,
- 7:42Speaker 4: so I'm good scaling that second half. Some outside factors
- 7:44Speaker 4: made a little body. So that second half part, you
- 7:46Speaker 4: guys can have to carry on me here. But but you,
- 7:54Speaker 4: Colorado's offensive line looks like shit. I mean that Nebrassa
- 7:58Speaker 4: D line looks really good too. But a door. I
- 8:00Speaker 4: had no time at all.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Oh, just three or four guys like under the bus. Yeah,
- 8:08Speaker 3: there was a guy in the backfield almost every play
- 8:11Speaker 3: that first half with rushing.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Like from the get go. Yes, it was exactly.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Is it the second play?
- 8:23Speaker 1: I mean we went, they went three and out and
- 8:24Speaker 1: he might have got him twice even it. I think
- 8:27Speaker 1: we ended up with six sacks on the day, for
- 8:29Speaker 1: which felt it felt low. We were on him constantly.
- 8:34Speaker 1: How many hits I don't have the number, but it
- 8:39Speaker 1: it was impressive and and guys a lot of that.
- 8:42Speaker 1: We talked on Wednesday about would we have to blitz him.
- 8:45Speaker 1: We didn't blitz at all against Utab zero times. We
- 8:49Speaker 1: did this a lot with just our four man front,
- 8:53Speaker 1: and then when we did bring a blitz package and
- 8:56Speaker 1: did bring a little bit of confusion, it went untouched
- 9:00Speaker 1: a couple of times. And it was just a masterpiece
- 9:05Speaker 1: by Tony White and this defensive staff, and especially upfront.
- 9:10Speaker 1: We'll talked a lot about Tie. There's a lot of
- 9:12Speaker 1: chatter about Tie as our our upfront could be real
- 9:16Speaker 1: and you need you need a solid front seven defense
- 9:20Speaker 1: in the Big ten, especially against the traditional Big ten teams.
- 9:24Speaker 1: But now these new ones like it's gonna give you
- 9:26Speaker 1: an advantage, and playing against Colorado, we made them look
- 9:31Speaker 1: like high schoolers.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, it was. I mean there were a couple
- 9:40Speaker 3: of players where I mean Travis Hunter got his yards,
- 9:43Speaker 3: which kind of to be expected, but that was really
- 9:47Speaker 3: the only guy I should to get the ball to
- 9:49Speaker 3: is Travis Hunter.
- 9:52Speaker 2: But how many big plays from Travis Hunter there? There
- 9:57Speaker 2: weren't many.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Maybe one.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I don't Yeah, I looked at his stats, though I
- 10:02Speaker 4: didn't think he I didn't think he was that crazy.
- 10:05Speaker 4: But that's pretty good.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And guys, that's what we talked about though with him.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He it was a quiet whatever yards we knew he
- 10:13Speaker 1: was gonna get his yards and catches. We knew that
- 10:16Speaker 1: is gonna throw him the ball. Thankfully, nothing was like memorable,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and you know we were there on the catch and
- 10:25Speaker 1: we did not let receivers two and three get going
- 10:27Speaker 1: at all, like Jimmy Horn was a non factor besides
- 10:31Speaker 1: the one kickoff return.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Early in the game.
- 10:35Speaker 1: We we contained a very explosive at least from a
- 10:39Speaker 1: skill position standpoint. We contained their offense very well. And
- 10:44Speaker 1: like I said, he just you appreciate Tony White. I
- 10:48Speaker 1: thought of this on the on the way down to
- 10:50Speaker 1: my trip this weekend, and then I had the thought again,
- 10:54Speaker 1: like do we want our defense playing like so so good,
- 10:58Speaker 1: because yeah, we just paid Tony White more.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Tony's gone after this year, you know what I mean.
- 11:04Speaker 1: We want we want a little fluff at the end
- 11:07Speaker 1: of the games and make us look maybe not as
- 11:10Speaker 1: good defensively so we can keep him around.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Tony's gone.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Honestly, the most go for a dack, I was gonna say, Yeah,
- 11:18Speaker 4: he's for sure gonna go a head coach somewhere. He's gone.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I honestly think that one of the most satisfic things
- 11:24Speaker 3: about the defense was the fourth down, like the like
- 11:26Speaker 3: they couldn't get a freaking yard. It's like, oh, you
- 11:28Speaker 3: guys need one yard. Nah, that's not happening. Good luck.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Things are bringing that up. I had that down too,
- 11:36Speaker 1: like it did. And then it happened again in the
- 11:39Speaker 1: second half, when you know Colorado needed to get a
- 11:42Speaker 1: first down in their own territory and nope, just.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Running the middle, not a chance like untouched was it?
- 11:50Speaker 4: M J.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Sherman maybe or I can't remember what, and just untouched
- 11:55Speaker 1: to your loss. Oh it's great, great.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Oh you guys are in the red zone and you
- 11:59Speaker 3: want to go for it.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Uh.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Now their run game is like that the first game
- 12:03Speaker 4: though too. It's it's gotta be one of the worst
- 12:05Speaker 4: in the nation. They don't run at all.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Well, that's because they don't run it.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, they don't even try.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Well I did see some comments by Colorado players on
- 12:17Speaker 1: why they don't, and I mean a lot of it
- 12:19Speaker 1: just did allude to what they have up front.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I mean, we know, we know that feeling.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I mean a couple of years ago, we know exactly
- 12:27Speaker 1: what that felt like and how hard it was to
- 12:30Speaker 1: do anything on offense when you don't have an offensive line.
- 12:34Speaker 2: And then last year we learned what it was like
- 12:35Speaker 2: without a quarterback.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Yeah. Our defense, like, I mean, run, the turnover, battle,
- 12:43Speaker 3: block field goal, interception, pick six, which that was just
- 12:47Speaker 3: a dumb pass play. I don't know why they threw that.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yeah, take us down the turnovers because this is another
- 12:52Speaker 1: big headline. This is another big storyline.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I mean, how like we had the fumble, recover, interception,
- 13:03Speaker 3: black field goal. Those are the only turnover and the
- 13:05Speaker 3: blackfield was not really a turnover, right, those were the
- 13:07Speaker 3: only three we had two. Yeah, that's it. The bumble
- 13:11Speaker 3: came late in the game, but it was deep. Was
- 13:16Speaker 3: that our end zone or their end zone? It was
- 13:19Speaker 3: their end zone, wasn't it.
- 13:22Speaker 2: We got the ball back then we didn't lose it.
- 13:25Speaker 3: No, we got the ball. I'm just trying to remember
- 13:27Speaker 3: if it was on our side or their side. It
- 13:28Speaker 3: was like it was at the five yard line. I
- 13:30Speaker 3: just don't remember which way we were going at the time.
- 13:34Speaker 3: But yeah, the pick six by Tommy Hill, like that's
- 13:36Speaker 3: really what we go down. But we have a really
- 13:39Speaker 3: rough first drive. It's like, oh no, like this isn't great.
- 13:43Speaker 3: We absolutely stomped them on defense, come out, and then
- 13:49Speaker 3: we picked them off after the freaking Bushini bomb. We'll
- 13:53Speaker 3: talk about that.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, save that, but the turnovers and play.
- 14:00Speaker 1: That was the most exciting and it's gonna be memorable
- 14:04Speaker 1: for a long time.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Was Tommy Hill's pick six.
- 14:07Speaker 1: And you can say what you want about Shador, I
- 14:10Speaker 1: mean having a dumb pass and it. I don't know
- 14:13Speaker 1: what he saw or what he did, but guy Shador
- 14:15Speaker 1: Sanders does not throwing receptions, Like look at his stats
- 14:18Speaker 1: from last year. He is a smart NFL caliber quarterback
- 14:24Speaker 1: and he doesn't do that. So Tommy will mentioned it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: He played his technique and I'm gonna say that the
- 14:31Speaker 1: fans deep in the end zone that plays an impact
- 14:34Speaker 1: like that is huge. That was This is a good
- 14:38Speaker 1: stat here. First time since we've had a pick six
- 14:41Speaker 1: since win.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I heard it.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Eleven right.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Nineteen, been five years since Cam Taylor Britt had a
- 14:54Speaker 1: pick six against Iowa. And then we had a defensive
- 14:57Speaker 1: fumble scoop and score in twenty two any COVID year
- 15:01Speaker 1: Deontay Williams. So, I mean we talked about the importance
- 15:05Speaker 1: of our defense. I guess getting turnovers to help field position.
- 15:09Speaker 1: But when you can score points and steal seven.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Like that, defensive score points.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Early in the game in a big game, I mean
- 15:19Speaker 1: that that's ginormous. That that was just like whoa, this
- 15:24Speaker 1: could go really really well. I mean zero, that.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Put them on there he like already, like you guys
- 15:30Speaker 3: are down fourteen zero halfway through the first quarter, Like
- 15:34Speaker 3: you guys got like that puts them on their heels,
- 15:37Speaker 3: like we got to figure this out now because this
- 15:38Speaker 3: could one more score and this is out of control.
- 15:42Speaker 2: In the block field goal, I mean we have we
- 15:44Speaker 2: don't do that often.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Now apparently we do now. I mean we did it
- 15:47Speaker 3: several times.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Last that was that was the another another huge play,
- 15:54Speaker 1: momentum swinging play. Yeah, those things are the type of
- 15:58Speaker 1: things that we talked talked about our defense taking the
- 16:01Speaker 1: step from last year up a notch, and they did it.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And I don't know, maybe we have not played two
- 16:07Speaker 1: good football teams. Youth have lost to Southern Utah, I
- 16:11Speaker 1: believe yesterday, So maybe you tapen really really bad and
- 16:16Speaker 1: Colorado could go.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Three and nine, four and eight to finish the year.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But regardless of that and not saying that, like, we're
- 16:24Speaker 1: doing the things we need to do against these teams
- 16:27Speaker 1: and that puts us in the top twenty five where
- 16:30Speaker 1: the voters think we should be.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I mean, we killed them the first half. We broke them.
- 16:37Speaker 3: We broke them in the first half. It's twenty eight zero,
- 16:40Speaker 3: and we just marched down and scored with I don't
- 16:43Speaker 3: remember how many like thirty five seconds left in the half.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Second week in a row we did that.
- 16:49Speaker 3: It's like, I mean, we bet.
- 16:54Speaker 4: That that pick six that Tommy I had to feel
- 16:57Speaker 4: a lot better too after it comes out after the game,
- 16:59Speaker 4: the shit fucking that Travis Hunder was doing with.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Him said some words came out before.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Dack first half.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I mean, since apparently right after the last touchdown, you
- 17:11Speaker 1: don't remember a thing.
- 17:12Speaker 4: After that A little bit, not that much.
- 17:15Speaker 2: What other thoughts do you have about the first half?
- 17:22Speaker 4: I just thought, like you said, I thought you kind
- 17:24Speaker 4: of rattled the door. You got him. That's the worst
- 17:27Speaker 4: I saw him look like he like you said, he's
- 17:29Speaker 4: a smart passer. He was throwing balls like like like
- 17:33Speaker 4: that pick six. He never throws that ball at all.
- 17:35Speaker 4: He always he waits, either waits and gets sacked or
- 17:39Speaker 4: like he'd rather get sacked through a ball like that.
- 17:41Speaker 4: But other than that, I thought your defense dominated the
- 17:43Speaker 4: whole first half. Your offense did whatn't need to do.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Basically, that's a good way to put it, guys, our
- 17:52Speaker 1: offense in the first half, we ran.
- 17:55Speaker 2: The ball down their throat.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, I believe it was like yards and carriage.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Like this offensive line, our offensive line has not made
- 18:05Speaker 1: holes like that. And I'm saying this because, Okay, I
- 18:12Speaker 1: have not watched I don't know the last time I
- 18:13Speaker 1: watched a home game on TV. I watched a lot
- 18:16Speaker 1: of the road games, but just watching it on TV,
- 18:18Speaker 1: like you could see, I was like whoa.
- 18:23Speaker 2: This is amazing.
- 18:25Speaker 3: It really like eight yards before a guy got yes.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And I don't know if that was Colorado's secondary and
- 18:31Speaker 1: linebackers be playing off a little bit because they were
- 18:33Speaker 1: worried about the past and our receivers. But if that's
- 18:36Speaker 1: the case, that's even more power to the guys we
- 18:40Speaker 1: brought in and to Ryola and these transfer portal receivers.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Like that's the goal of that, right, You want to
- 18:47Speaker 1: you want teams to be afraid of that threat, even
- 18:51Speaker 1: if it hasn't been done yet. And that opens up
- 18:54Speaker 1: the run game. And then guess what when you run it, it
- 18:55Speaker 1: opened at the pass game. Did we have to really
- 18:58Speaker 1: use the pass game last night? No?
- 19:00Speaker 2: Not really. Like second half, we run game didn't look
- 19:04Speaker 2: as good.
- 19:04Speaker 1: But guess what, Colorado probably knew we were going to
- 19:08Speaker 1: run the ball because we were ahead by four touchdowns.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Right, and when we had good run plays that got
- 19:15Speaker 3: called back for holding calls.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Okay, so yeah, let's move to the second half because
- 19:21Speaker 1: that's not going to have any insight.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Now, yep, I'm out. I'll see you boys later.
- 19:27Speaker 2: The second half went, it's twenty another a halftime.
- 19:31Speaker 1: The final score finishes twenty eight to ten, and there
- 19:36Speaker 1: was talk about postgame press conference about the second half
- 19:39Speaker 1: how it went. That's been some conversation I've heard amongst
- 19:43Speaker 1: people I've talked to, like Aostin, what do you make
- 19:46Speaker 1: of the second half?
- 19:48Speaker 3: I will say watching the game, I'm not upset because obviously,
- 19:54Speaker 3: when when you're playing with the big lead, you play differently.
- 19:57Speaker 3: The defense knew we were running it, so they're gonna
- 19:59Speaker 3: stuff up more. The reffing wasn't great. I'm not gonna
- 20:03Speaker 3: say that it was like unfavorable, but it was. They
- 20:07Speaker 3: were getting pretty ticky tacky with the calls. I thought,
- 20:10Speaker 3: so just as far as an enjoyment, like I was,
- 20:13Speaker 3: so I was on cloud nine after the first half.
- 20:16Speaker 3: But by the end of the game, I was like,
- 20:17Speaker 3: oh my gosh, can this game just be over? Like
- 20:19Speaker 3: we won this game like three hours ago, and I
- 20:21Speaker 3: am just we were just trying to grind to the
- 20:24Speaker 3: end here, Like Shader literally left the field like let's
- 20:27Speaker 3: just go. Why are we calling me?
- 20:29Speaker 1: I was gonna ask you this, what do you think
- 20:31Speaker 1: about that? At what point we're going to get to that?
- 20:34Speaker 1: At what point?
- 20:35Speaker 2: Awesome? Do you think the game was over? Like then
- 20:37Speaker 2: we think we won because.
- 20:39Speaker 3: I thought after half straight up a brief moment where
- 20:43Speaker 3: I got a little concerned when they blocked the punt
- 20:45Speaker 3: and they scored the touch and I was like, okay,
- 20:47Speaker 3: like one more score and this might be a little
- 20:50Speaker 3: bit of a game.
- 20:50Speaker 2: But twenty eight to nothing was. I thought it was good.
- 20:54Speaker 2: But I know how I all this scar tissue.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Yes, sit round.
- 21:00Speaker 1: It took me so long to get my head to
- 21:04Speaker 1: like we won this game.
- 21:06Speaker 3: And okay, yes, that's a different question of when was
- 21:09Speaker 3: my head did we won won? When we won this game,
- 21:12Speaker 3: it was probably with seven months left in the fourth quarter.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Hey, that's yeah, that's what Like I I just did
- 21:17Speaker 1: not this whole second half was going and I didn't
- 21:20Speaker 1: Some people were like, well, we didn't play well.
- 21:22Speaker 2: We didn't look dynamic on offense.
- 21:23Speaker 1: We didn't, you know, move the ball down the field,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and like I didn't want to, Like I wanted that
- 21:27Speaker 1: clock to run.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Run in penalty, it's like, great, we get thirty five
- 21:32Speaker 3: more seconds throw I was in the penalties were I
- 21:37Speaker 3: agree made the second half very long, But it just.
- 21:43Speaker 2: I just wanted to win the game.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And Colorado knew we were going to run the ball
- 21:47Speaker 1: and we still did it most of the time, and
- 21:49Speaker 1: you know, brought down our yards per carry average. I
- 21:52Speaker 1: didn't care, like ugly it up. And yeah, we didn't score,
- 21:57Speaker 1: but we didn't turn the ball over, like we don't
- 22:01Speaker 1: beat ourselves. We don't lose that game when you're up
- 22:03Speaker 1: four touchdowns going in the second half. I remembered when
- 22:06Speaker 1: we went out there and in bouldered in twenty what
- 22:10Speaker 1: was that, twenty seventeen, twenty eighteen, and we were down.
- 22:13Speaker 2: We were up seventeen nothing at halftime.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 22:16Speaker 2: We lost.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Now twenty eight nothing is obviously different than seventeen nothing.
- 22:20Speaker 1: But I just couldn't get myself like believe that we're
- 22:23Speaker 1: actually gonna win the game until the end. So I wondered, yeah,
- 22:29Speaker 1: the second half, because I did here like we didn't
- 22:32Speaker 1: look great, kind of looks sloppy. The penalties, I agree
- 22:36Speaker 1: with some of the penalties were what the heck? But
- 22:38Speaker 1: then with the penalties, I was like, maybe maybe the refs,
- 22:43Speaker 1: we're like, okay, Nebraska's got this one, Like it's not
- 22:48Speaker 1: going to hurt us if we throw a couple of
- 22:49Speaker 1: penalties on them because they're ahead by a lot. Like
- 22:52Speaker 1: you know, when when you're ahead a lot in the
- 22:55Speaker 1: game you don't get play.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Does it favored one team?
- 22:58Speaker 2: You know, you go, yeah, they're not gonna complain as much.
- 23:00Speaker 1: But Rule was riding him. I mean he was, he
- 23:03Speaker 1: was grinding. He wanted to you know, he wasn't. He
- 23:05Speaker 1: didn't feel safe until until we won.
- 23:08Speaker 3: And you could tell that this press conference, he was like,
- 23:10Speaker 3: I'm just so happy we won. Like he's like, this
- 23:12Speaker 3: is the perfect game. We did so many things wrong.
- 23:14Speaker 3: I can still coach them, but we won.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Because that is go ahead deck.
- 23:20Speaker 4: So were they awful calls or were they like just
- 23:22Speaker 4: ticki tag?
- 23:24Speaker 3: There was a lot of right calls, and there was
- 23:28Speaker 3: a lot there was a good chunk of tiki tag
- 23:30Speaker 3: calls on both sides.
- 23:33Speaker 2: It just got sloppy and it did.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Yeah, which it is what it is, I I think,
- 23:39Speaker 1: and this is classic Nebraska fan talk. Our mindset went
- 23:45Speaker 1: from man, that first half like enjoyed it so much too.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I'm not saying you were there, Austin, but like second half,
- 23:53Speaker 1: everyone's like, oh, we didn't play well. Oh man, Like
- 23:56Speaker 1: what were we doing the second half?
- 23:57Speaker 2: Why do we look so bad?
- 23:58Speaker 1: I'm not saying you were, but people have that thought
- 24:01Speaker 1: and opinion and I think the media wanted to push
- 24:03Speaker 1: that out in the post game too, and I'm like, guys, like,
- 24:06Speaker 1: what are we doing? That's why I said, let's let's
- 24:09Speaker 1: enjoy this, like look what we did in the first half,
- 24:12Speaker 1: and like this is coming from the pessimistic fan, like
- 24:16Speaker 1: I win the game. Why why are we moving on
- 24:18Speaker 1: so quick from a twenty eight to nothing halftime score
- 24:21Speaker 1: two now, oh god, we can't get a run more
- 24:24Speaker 1: than two yards? Well yeah, no shit, we stack in
- 24:28Speaker 1: the box, stack in the box, and we just want
- 24:30Speaker 1: the clock to run. Like I was back to run
- 24:32Speaker 1: it in punnet mode from last year running punnet, run
- 24:34Speaker 1: it and punchet.
- 24:35Speaker 4: I will got to be happy if any when you
- 24:37Speaker 4: get now.
- 24:38Speaker 3: You can't be I will say, Like talking about Brady
- 24:43Speaker 3: the clock in the second half Delandreola, I know he
- 24:45Speaker 3: only missed seven passes out of the thirty three is
- 24:48Speaker 3: still pretty good, and there were a couple of drop passes,
- 24:52Speaker 3: but when he was in a situation where it's like,
- 24:54Speaker 3: oh no, he's gonna take a loss here, and he
- 24:58Speaker 3: either if he needed the clock to run, he would
- 25:01Speaker 3: somehow get to the line of scrimmage and just like
- 25:03Speaker 3: he would go down, or if he didn't care if
- 25:06Speaker 3: the clock ran. He was able to throw it away
- 25:07Speaker 3: like it was. It was honestly incredible. Every time I
- 25:11Speaker 3: was like, oh my gosh, he's gonna be sacked, and
- 25:12Speaker 3: somebody's like, nope, I'm gonna get two extra yards to
- 25:14Speaker 3: get back to the line of scrimmage.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Keep talking to me some Dylan Ryal. I just want
- 25:18Speaker 1: to keep hearing it because this was good. Oh yeah, that,
- 25:22Speaker 1: keep keep it coming.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I want to keep hearing the love.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Next question.
- 25:30Speaker 1: He I completely agree. Austin like his ability to mitigate disaster.
- 25:39Speaker 1: It's just I'm gonna call it tork, but twist and
- 25:41Speaker 1: move his body on some of his throws when there's
- 25:45Speaker 1: the fenders around, when he's in the pocket, when pressure
- 25:48Speaker 1: is coming from this angle. He just's his footwork is
- 25:52Speaker 1: something we haven't seen. And I yeah, you can look
- 25:56Speaker 1: at the end ressault and the stats and the throws
- 25:58Speaker 1: and the completions and not completions he in through two games.
- 26:04Speaker 1: He gets the intangible, the little things that you want
- 26:07Speaker 1: out of a quarterback. And some of his throws. Like
- 26:10Speaker 1: watching him, he might watch and say, oh, I don't know,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I was that a good or a bad throw? I'm
- 26:15Speaker 1: not sure, like.
- 26:19Speaker 3: In the middle that's like probably should have been picked.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Off that one that touchdown, Like yeah, cards fell our way,
- 26:25Speaker 1: but there's also some other ones that a couple of
- 26:28Speaker 1: other incompletions that was like, Okay, he put that ball
- 26:30Speaker 1: where if our receiver, if our receiver can make a
- 26:34Speaker 1: miraculous catch, like great, but other than that, it's not
- 26:38Speaker 1: getting caught by anybody. So I think he's he's very
- 26:41Speaker 1: intelligent with that. And yeah, his I mean the tuck
- 26:46Speaker 1: and run on our first drive like that, that was huge.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And I'll say it because this is gonna get said
- 26:53Speaker 1: a billion times after every game.
- 26:57Speaker 2: The Mahome celebration gets up, and I mean it is.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Honestly, And also one of the other things I loved.
- 27:06Speaker 3: I don't know if you saw this when you were
- 27:07Speaker 3: watching it, but there's one reverse that we did and
- 27:15Speaker 3: the Colorado if Fenders swung around the outside and he
- 27:17Speaker 3: straight up just dropped his shoulder all the way down
- 27:19Speaker 3: to the guy and dropped him from who was pursuer
- 27:21Speaker 3: from behind. And I was like, oh my gosh, that
- 27:23Speaker 3: is exactly you know, want your quarterback to get hurt.
- 27:26Speaker 3: But that was it was excellent.
- 27:30Speaker 2: And he'll learn to slide better I think.
- 27:32Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, I love the Colorado's backup quarterback slides
- 27:37Speaker 3: because they weren't slides. He just dove head first each
- 27:39Speaker 3: time and then cracked me up. I was like, is
- 27:43Speaker 3: that kind of as a slide. I don't think it does.
- 27:46Speaker 4: The The main thing with Ryl is he hasn't, like
- 27:48Speaker 4: you said, made a mistake. He hadn't thrown a pick yet.
- 27:50Speaker 4: He's a true freshman, which is pretty unheard of. They're
- 27:54Speaker 4: usually and became like that true freshman they sometimes.
- 27:57Speaker 3: A Heisman quarterback candidate.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think it could still come. But the
- 28:05Speaker 1: good like, yeah, he's not gonna go the whole year
- 28:07Speaker 1: without an interception.
- 28:09Speaker 2: But I agree.
- 28:11Speaker 1: And when the media tried to hype him up to
- 28:15Speaker 1: rule a role, was like, I don't, I don't really know.
- 28:18Speaker 1: All I know is he didn't turn it over like
- 28:21Speaker 1: that was his response, Like you can tell. That's where
- 28:23Speaker 1: the episode focuses and that like that is awesome, but
- 28:26Speaker 1: that is where we need to be. It makes me
- 28:28Speaker 1: feel a lot better that that's the mindset that Rule has,
- 28:32Speaker 1: that the staff has, and and honestly what Dylan has
- 28:36Speaker 1: as a freshman quarterback and leading us to a win,
- 28:40Speaker 1: that we needed to just get a win and that
- 28:43Speaker 1: that's that's it. Don't need to put me extra icing
- 28:45Speaker 1: on the kick running backs and mentioned that were opening
- 28:52Speaker 1: it looks like hal Dell's And then is gonna you
- 28:55Speaker 1: guys have played Ramir like I think he could be
- 28:59Speaker 1: used in a real role. Is is that that passing
- 29:03Speaker 1: down back exceptions receptions? Yeah, forty nine yards? And then
- 29:07Speaker 1: obviously that touchdown had a couple of good runs. And
- 29:11Speaker 1: then dow Dell's.
- 29:13Speaker 2: He's good.
- 29:14Speaker 3: I mean he could he lays the wood when he
- 29:18Speaker 3: hits through that hole.
- 29:19Speaker 1: And Dak, I think you're I called you out on
- 29:22Speaker 1: this last time.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I think he is. He's quick and explosive.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I mean he's he's not as big of a back
- 29:27Speaker 1: as is what I initially kind of thought. He's I'm
- 29:30Speaker 1: not gonna say he's faster than like her Mir, He's
- 29:35Speaker 1: not faster than Ja Cory Barney not a running back,
- 29:37Speaker 1: but man, that guy is He's gonna be fun to
- 29:41Speaker 1: watch here.
- 29:43Speaker 4: But what is he a sophomore? Yes, okay, so he
- 29:47Speaker 4: got him couple well yeah, the so did he break
- 29:52Speaker 4: Shotry is not a sophomore.
- 29:55Speaker 3: He's a freshman, not to Cory, I thought you're talking
- 29:57Speaker 3: about down Dell.
- 29:58Speaker 4: I was talking about down Dell. Okay, yeah, but yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 4: when he lowered that hit on Shiloh, did he actually
- 30:04Speaker 4: break his arm?
- 30:05Speaker 3: Yeah, Shiloh actually broke his arm.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a hell of a put him on
- 30:13Speaker 4: his ass.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Hey, Yeah, So Shiloh is out of the broken forearm,
- 30:19Speaker 1: should her goes down and gets hit targeting kind of
- 30:27Speaker 1: walks off, hobbles off or review the targeting, he calls
- 30:30Speaker 1: for the trainer, ends up going back in the game,
- 30:37Speaker 1: gets hit again or whatever, then doesn't finish the game
- 30:40Speaker 1: out at the time, I didn't know that quote unquote
- 30:43Speaker 1: he was hurt, but they throw in the back of
- 30:46Speaker 1: I thought they were just waving the white flag, which
- 30:48Speaker 1: I guess they kind of did. And then should proceeds
- 30:50Speaker 1: to go to the locker room, so he's not out
- 30:52Speaker 1: there for the hand the handshake, then I do I
- 30:56Speaker 1: find it funny. I don't know the intent behind rule
- 31:00Speaker 1: in the comments of.
- 31:03Speaker 2: About them, you know, saying I hope they're okay.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Like I'm not saying he was being sarcastic with it
- 31:09Speaker 1: all or humorous, but at the same time, like it
- 31:12Speaker 1: came across like no, I want to show my respect
- 31:14Speaker 1: for those two and hope they're okay.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I don't know me And maybe maybe you should do.
- 31:19Speaker 3: D locker doors and my behind locker indoors might be like,
- 31:22Speaker 3: screw you guys, we got you guys off the field.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I don't know what.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Maybe and maybe you should doers for rush. We shouldn't
- 31:27Speaker 1: say that for in case he's actually concussed. But at
- 31:30Speaker 1: the same time, like I don't think he is, Like
- 31:32Speaker 1: he was just done, he was he was husted. He
- 31:36Speaker 1: just get me off of this field so I don't
- 31:37Speaker 1: have to stay here for everything that happens after.
- 31:42Speaker 4: I honestly don't blame him for that part about leaving
- 31:44Speaker 4: the field because they're more I think they're worried about
- 31:48Speaker 4: rush students rushing the field and stuff like that. I
- 31:50Speaker 4: don't blame for leaving, Like, I mean, he's kind of
- 31:52Speaker 4: pussy move.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But did so did you guys see the picture of
- 31:57Speaker 1: the field goal post security cards?
- 32:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I was like, no, one, it wasn't really it
- 32:04Speaker 3: was a field rush, but it was definitely more of
- 32:06Speaker 3: like the students that were like, if we win this game,
- 32:09Speaker 3: I'm going to rush the field. And then we won
- 32:11Speaker 3: the game. But it's like, yeah, okay, this is just
- 32:13Speaker 3: these are just drunk college It's not even like a
- 32:17Speaker 3: you know, it wasn't packed, It wasn't like the stadium
- 32:19Speaker 3: was going nuts. It was like, it's like, these are
- 32:22Speaker 3: the drunk kids who planned on rushing the game no
- 32:25Speaker 3: matter how.
- 32:26Speaker 1: The word I liked was meander and I heard they
- 32:29Speaker 1: just they just kind of meandered out there, just hung out. Yeah,
- 32:33Speaker 1: I do think if we win that game on a
- 32:37Speaker 1: last drive or get a huge stop, but.
- 32:40Speaker 3: The real storm, Yes, I agree.
- 32:42Speaker 2: I don't know how I feel about that.
- 32:45Speaker 3: You don't storm the field unless of their ranked and
- 32:48Speaker 3: their arrival, and you're unranked, so you have.
- 32:53Speaker 2: The and in there.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I I was also I'm also a little bit like
- 32:57Speaker 1: they get enjoy it, like winning a big game, but
- 33:00Speaker 1: at the same time, it's not that big of a game,
- 33:02Speaker 1: not not for storming. And I just hate what happens
- 33:05Speaker 1: after you storm field or a court. It's an automatic
- 33:09Speaker 1: don't play well next.
- 33:10Speaker 2: It is.
- 33:10Speaker 1: I don't know if that's a proven statistic, but like
- 33:14Speaker 1: I feel like it is every time I feel like
- 33:17Speaker 1: it happens.
- 33:18Speaker 2: So yeah, I do. I agree.
- 33:21Speaker 1: It was enough to say, okay, this was an awesome win,
- 33:23Speaker 1: but yet it was really just the college kids and yeah,
- 33:27Speaker 1: hanging out with the players.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Cool, I don't run.
- 33:32Speaker 3: I want to mention Barnie. Wow, you're right. He is
- 33:37Speaker 3: gonna be so fun to watch. He is so freaking
- 33:40Speaker 3: fast and he was way more used in this game
- 33:42Speaker 3: in the last game. And then you gotta talk. We
- 33:45Speaker 3: gotta talk special teams. Hunter, the Bushidi bombs are back.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Get your Boushini jerseys.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Now, Huge did have the one blocked, but.
- 33:55Speaker 3: It's not necessarily his fault.
- 33:58Speaker 5: It.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Yeah, keep doing it like, I don't want to jokes him.
- 34:02Speaker 1: It's like hitting a bunch of good golf shots in
- 34:04Speaker 1: a row and you start thinking about you know, Nope,
- 34:06Speaker 1: I don't.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Want to just keep doing it.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Keep doing your job and exceeding at it, and yeah,
- 34:12Speaker 1: keep putting them at the two yard line like that
- 34:14Speaker 1: was great.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Uh, And Alvano's not kicking field goals next week. I'm
- 34:17Speaker 3: calling it right now.
- 34:18Speaker 2: You're right, that was bad.
- 34:23Speaker 3: I can't do that twice two games in a row.
- 34:25Speaker 1: No, Nope, and you could tell me that we lost
- 34:29Speaker 1: the jobs.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Not a happy camper, I mean on the sideline, he
- 34:33Speaker 3: was so happy the whole first half. The only time
- 34:35Speaker 3: he looked over at the sideline was when he was
- 34:37Speaker 3: yelling at the the rest and he was upset or
- 34:39Speaker 3: he missed that field goal, and he is just you know,
- 34:42Speaker 3: he's got that just the oh, like, I'm so freaking
- 34:47Speaker 3: pissed right now.
- 34:50Speaker 4: That's that's one part of the game's got scary it.
- 34:53Speaker 4: You want to dress your kicker to win you a
- 34:54Speaker 4: football game, it's there's gonna be a couple of games
- 34:57Speaker 4: probably comes down to your kicker's foot. Rule you guys,
- 35:00Speaker 4: definitely don't trust it.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Rule knows what you just said, I think and that
- 35:08Speaker 1: those we have were in a close game again, but
- 35:11Speaker 1: those are the plays that the blocked punked and the
- 35:14Speaker 1: missfield goal, those are the types of plays that can
- 35:17Speaker 1: come back and bite chin close games. As we know.
- 35:19Speaker 1: It's not like we're unfamiliar to that. So while it
- 35:23Speaker 1: didn't hurt us and we got we skayed the way
- 35:25Speaker 1: with it. Now you can't overlook you cannot do it.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Last question for you, guys, does this win change your
- 35:37Speaker 1: expectations for the year. We go back and we change
- 35:41Speaker 1: our thoughts our expectations. We talk about that a lot
- 35:44Speaker 1: on this podcast every year. Dack start with you, Does
- 35:46Speaker 1: this change the expectations for Nebraska football for twenty twenty four?
- 35:55Speaker 4: Oh? No, I probably stink. I thought you were gonna
- 35:59Speaker 4: win a first set for a Hio State. Still do
- 36:02Speaker 4: I mean more confident that now? Hother that? No, it
- 36:10Speaker 4: really doesn't. I thought you were win your first seven
- 36:13Speaker 4: and I still do and after that you maybe could
- 36:15Speaker 4: beat USC. Now I don't know.
- 36:17Speaker 3: I expect this to be a seven eight win team,
- 36:19Speaker 3: and I still think we're in positioning a seven eight
- 36:21Speaker 3: win We're not beating Ohio State and USC. I don't know.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Maybe I was not as as we thought, but I
- 36:29Speaker 3: still think we're a seven eight win team, maybe nine.
- 36:31Speaker 4: But yeah, I had to make guys happy before that
- 36:34Speaker 4: Huscar game.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Yeah, here's the thing, guys, I don't know where my
- 36:39Speaker 1: new expectations are at. But the answer to that question
- 36:42Speaker 1: for me is yes, the first half in itself, how
- 36:45Speaker 1: impressive it went. I have a different outlook on this team.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I don't know where it's at yet. Though for me,
- 36:52Speaker 1: I thought.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Most pessimistic of the bunch correct, so my expectations might
- 36:57Speaker 3: have been lower.
- 36:58Speaker 1: But after how that first half way and then how
- 37:00Speaker 1: we proceeded to just manage and win the game. Like
- 37:04Speaker 1: I feel very confident that we might not slip up
- 37:07Speaker 1: to now I shouldn't say very confident, but more confident
- 37:10Speaker 1: that we might not slip up until Ohio State and.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Then it doesn't look as good. And Iowa I don't.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I don't, I don't think.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Yeah, like these other games like Wisconsin Iowa, we are
- 37:24Speaker 1: with them every year, like should or could beat them.
- 37:27Speaker 1: You seel like I'm not saying ten to two, But
- 37:30Speaker 1: at the same time, the expectation or the chances of
- 37:34Speaker 1: that happening are a lot lot higher after this week.
- 37:38Speaker 1: So my expectation to me, Yeah, it's changed. I can't
- 37:41Speaker 1: say where it's changed. Maybe I'll let you know on
- 37:43Speaker 1: Wednesday what I think. But it's moved.
- 37:48Speaker 3: Okay, all right, welcome to the party. This is where
- 37:51Speaker 3: Dak and I were. I'm glad you can join it.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I joined it.
- 37:54Speaker 3: I made it.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Just needs to start to.
- 37:56Speaker 4: One time we've been waiting.
- 37:59Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back preview Northern Iowa on Wednesday.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Go Biggert, we are bloomer sooner name only one sixteen days?
- 38:11Speaker 5: Well no, no, we got got
- 39:54Speaker 1: H
