- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the Great News Podcast because we could all use some
- 0:18good news. Link is in the show notes.
- 0:21Today's quote comes from Renee Brown, research professor, best
- 0:26selling author, and the woman who's 2 Decades of work on
- 0:29vulnerability, shame, and courage have inspired millions
- 0:33of people to show up more honestly in their lives, their
- 0:37relationships, and their work. From her book Daring Greatly,
- 0:42she wrote vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like
- 0:46courage. Truth and courage aren't always
- 0:50comfortable, but they're never weakness.
- 0:55Here's the objection you might be having when hearing this
- 0:57quote. Vulnerability is weakness.
- 1:02Showing your uncertainty, admitting your fear, letting
- 1:06people see the unfinished and imperfect parts of you feels
- 1:10dangerous. It feels like handing someone a
- 1:13weapon. And so we close up and hide to
- 1:16protect ourselves. We project confidence we don't
- 1:19feel. We hide the struggle.
- 1:22We act strong instead of being strong.
- 1:26Brown spent 20 years in research collecting data on this exact
- 1:30pattern, and what she found completely upended the
- 1:33conventional wisdom. Vulnerability creates deeper,
- 1:37more authentic connections because true sets people free,
- 1:42and courage brings out the best in US while inspiring others to
- 1:47do the same. Think about what Brown is
- 1:49actually saying. Vulnerability sounds like truth,
- 1:54meaning it requires you to speak honestly, even when honesty is
- 1:59hard. And it feels like courage, which
- 2:02means the discomfort you feel when you're being vulnerable
- 2:06isn't a warning sign, it's confirmation that you're doing
- 2:11something brave. Brown found that people who live
- 2:15and love with their whole hearts, and who attribute their
- 2:19professional success, their deepest relationships, and their
- 2:22proudest moments to their willingness to be vulnerable,
- 2:26share one thing in common. The courage to be imperfect.
- 2:32Living life not absent of fear and not absent of doubt.
- 2:37Just the willingness to show up anyway, honestly, as they
- 2:42actually are. Because the final line of the
- 2:44quote says they're never weakness.
- 2:48The armor you've been wearing to protect yourself from
- 2:51vulnerability isn't protecting you from weakness, it's
- 2:55protecting you from connection, growth, and the kind of courage
- 2:59that actually changes things. So here's the question, where in
- 3:04your life are you currently choosing this self manufactured
- 3:07armor over the truth performing strength instead of showing up
- 3:12honestly? Because Brown's research is
- 3:14clear, the vulnerability you're avoiding isn't weakness, it's
- 3:20the doorway to everything worth having.
- 3:23The connection, the courage, the life that actually feels real.
- 3:28Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never
- 3:32weakness. That's it for today.
- 3:36I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 3:40tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:45with another daily quote.
