- 0:23Speaker 4: Welcome back to Artists on Artists on Artists on college edition.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That's right.
- 0:29Speaker 4: This week we put on a short film festival of
- 0:32Speaker 4: some of the most talented young college filmmakers around.
- 0:37Speaker 5: They get out of the dorms and they go straight
- 0:39Speaker 5: to their Panavision textbooks. They learn Hollywood, they take Hollywood
- 0:44Speaker 5: and they start they make short films.
- 0:47Speaker 2: The future of Hollywood isn't a classroom right now, and
- 0:50Speaker 2: for us, they're in our studio. So listen to these voices,
- 0:55Speaker 2: memorize them, and know who they are because you're going
- 0:58Speaker 2: to be seeing their work for years to come. My
- 1:05Speaker 2: name is Connor Bilbo and I am a sophomore at
- 1:08Speaker 2: the University City of Texas at Austin and the film
- 1:12Speaker 2: that I produced is called.
- 1:15Speaker 6: The Other Side of the Coaster.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That we all watched.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Hey Hey, Hey, I'm Mike Waters. I'm forty five years old.
- 1:24Speaker 4: I went back to film school and I am a
- 1:27Speaker 4: sophomore at Chapman University. My film was called Babes at Night.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Hi.
- 1:35Speaker 5: I'm Deb Deb from Long Island and I'm from NYU.
- 1:40Speaker 5: My film is called Role Model, Long Isle.
- 1:43Speaker 7: Hi. My name is Brian Binks. I went to USC
- 1:48Speaker 7: film School and my film is called The Big Pit.
- 1:54Speaker 5: I think it was a beautiful origin story of James.
- 1:57Speaker 5: The giant Peach was that it?
- 1:58Speaker 6: Am?
- 1:58Speaker 3: I right about that?
- 1:59Speaker 7: Well, it's for interpretation, you know.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I got major James.
- 2:03Speaker 7: That's great because my my goal as a filmmaker is
- 2:05Speaker 7: to make something. And I know the answer, but I
- 2:07Speaker 7: don't want to tell you guys the answer.
- 2:08Speaker 4: I gotta say that big sign that said thank you
- 2:11Speaker 4: to Roll Doll at the end, that title card, that
- 2:15Speaker 4: really was what clued me in. And I think that's
- 2:17Speaker 4: what you were glomming onto.
- 2:18Speaker 7: And it's completely unrelated. He's just a big figure in
- 2:21Speaker 7: my life.
- 2:21Speaker 3: I just like your tutor or something.
- 2:24Speaker 7: No, he's a famous children.
- 2:28Speaker 3: But it wasn't related to you know.
- 2:29Speaker 7: I just love his books. I love his books.
- 2:31Speaker 2: A really curious and curiouser. Yeah, I was curious. Speaking
- 2:36Speaker 2: of curious, how you guys got involved in this film
- 2:40Speaker 2: festival and I'm just curious, like where you guys are,
- 2:45Speaker 2: like in your path.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Well, I myself am a rambling man.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I well, long night ahead of us.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Look, I'm a rambling man, A rambling in the sense
- 3:02Speaker 4: that I'm bopping around from place to place.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I was a punk until I was forty four years old.
- 3:07Speaker 3: A punk.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I was a punk. This is the first year of
- 3:10Speaker 1: my life that I turned.
- 3:11Speaker 4: It around and I said, you know what, I'm gonna
- 3:14Speaker 4: study film at Chapman University. And so I made my
- 3:19Speaker 4: film Babes in the Water. It was sort of a
- 3:22Speaker 4: three week long thing. It had been brewing in me
- 3:25Speaker 4: for a while where I thought three weeks. Three weeks, yeah,
- 3:28Speaker 4: which is the longest I've ever focused on anything.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So for me, it's a big, big accomplishment.
- 3:33Speaker 4: And I thought about I was thinking a lot about
- 3:36Speaker 4: women and how they're objectified and how they're just seen
- 3:41Speaker 4: as these objects they are. So I wanted to yes, exactly,
- 3:45Speaker 4: I'm sure you can attest.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I won't say anything on that because I'm not
- 3:49Speaker 2: a woman.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Awesome man, And so that's awesome.
- 3:55Speaker 4: You've got a good head on your shoulders and you're
- 3:56Speaker 4: gonna make it. You're gonna You're gonna score a banging
- 3:58Speaker 4: wife one day.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It'll be cheers.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yes. And so Babes in.
- 4:03Speaker 4: The Water was sort of like a turning that on
- 4:06Speaker 4: its head, just watching these babes bounce around in the
- 4:09Speaker 4: water for a while to show.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Society that that's not okay.
- 4:13Speaker 4: And so I think this was really my sort of
- 4:17Speaker 4: foray into feminism. I just learned about it recently. GS
- 4:23Speaker 4: my Travels, thank you so much. But I mean watching
- 4:27Speaker 4: all these films just now, incredible work from everybody.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I'd love to know more about your film.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Oh, my film on the Other Side of the Coaster.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yes, the Other Side of the Coaster.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah. It is a fantasy film about a guy who
- 4:39Speaker 2: sees that there's something going on in the Reflective Coaster.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It is a take on Els in Wonderland, paying homage
- 4:47Speaker 2: to it, and he goes into a world that is
- 4:51Speaker 2: very much stained by our world. And did you notice that. Yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 2: I have a character that says, everything here is stained
- 4:59Speaker 2: by the the world. And I was just a kind
- 5:02Speaker 2: of sitting around and I was looking at a bunch
- 5:05Speaker 2: of stuff in my room and I'm like kind of
- 5:08Speaker 2: like interesting. I have like kind of these like thoughts
- 5:11Speaker 2: where I'm like where did that come from?
- 5:12Speaker 6: Like uh oh, what was that?
- 5:14Speaker 2: Like like whoa?
- 5:16Speaker 6: And I thought, yeah, what if I like whoa?
- 5:20Speaker 3: Like like that was dark?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Or like did someone just put that in my head?
- 5:23Speaker 2: Like am I like that came from my brain? Or
- 5:26Speaker 2: did somebody just like put the SD card inside my
- 5:28Speaker 2: cranium in it? Like cause I'm like wow, like where's
- 5:31Speaker 2: that coming from? And That's how I know I'm a
- 5:32Speaker 2: good artist. But it was like what if I went
- 5:35Speaker 2: into a coaster and you know, as you guys can
- 5:39Speaker 2: probably tell a lot of Monty Python influences in it.
- 5:43Speaker 7: Well, I think I can speak for all of us.
- 5:45Speaker 7: We're all influenced by Monty Python, right.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I would love to hear if you guys are really
- 5:49Speaker 2: influenced by Anty Python.
- 5:50Speaker 5: I influenced it by it in a way where I
- 5:53Speaker 5: don't want to have.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Anything fucking like it.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Okay, when I see those fucking greasy ass boys, I
- 6:00Speaker 5: want to blow my brains out.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I think they aren't funny.
- 6:03Speaker 5: I think they need to shower, and I think they
- 6:06Speaker 5: have no sense of storytelling.
- 6:08Speaker 4: You were influenced by hate and I love that, girlfriend,
- 6:11Speaker 4: I love that for you.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I that's so interesting. I've never seen them as greasy.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I actually see them as like revolutionaries, like silly, like funny.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Teeth look like greasy. I've never seen teeth that look greasy.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Okay, and their teeth look greasy, the.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Greasiest teeth I've ever seen.
- 6:30Speaker 2: In my mouth.
- 6:31Speaker 3: It looks like a bacon pan on his teeth.
- 6:33Speaker 1: He's really sticking it to cancel culture every day.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Oh, I love that though, you do love that. I
- 6:38Speaker 3: love sticking it to anything.
- 6:39Speaker 7: Okay, sounds about your movie.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Roll Model Long Aisle. It's a little rhyme, it's a mouthful.
- 6:47Speaker 3: It's about my mother.
- 6:49Speaker 7: Roll Model long Asle.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yes, where's the rhyme?
- 6:52Speaker 7: Where's the rhyme?
- 6:53Speaker 3: Roll Model Long Aisle. Do you hear it?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Roll Model long out, Yeah, I hear it.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Roll Mile, Long Aisle, Roll Model Long Aisle, Roll Model
- 7:06Speaker 5: long eyelant rhyme.
- 7:08Speaker 1: You guys, gotta let me tell you some ofing. Just
- 7:10Speaker 1: Manda Man.
- 7:11Speaker 4: You gotta learn to listen to her when she's talking.
- 7:14Speaker 4: You gotta learn to listen to her. I've spent forty
- 7:17Speaker 4: four years of my life.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Going blah blah blah blah blah. And now I'm dialed in.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Oh my god, Oh my god, Oh my god, what
- 7:29Speaker 3: are you saying?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Oh my god, are you OK?
- 7:30Speaker 3: I just can't believe he's so behind.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Anyway, my movie Roll Model Long Isle is about my
- 7:37Speaker 5: mother who worked at a strip club and had a rash.
- 7:41Speaker 7: It was very funny. It was really funny, thank you.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 5: What's so ironic about it is a strip of instrument
- 7:50Speaker 5: is her body, and someone with a rash, the instrument
- 7:53Speaker 5: is their rash.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Right, and that's the obstacle.
- 7:55Speaker 5: So her her way of facilitating her life is also
- 7:59Speaker 5: her obstacle. And I find that I found that gorgeous
- 8:03Speaker 5: and n Yu. We do a lot of work with
- 8:07Speaker 5: the actors, you know, and I'm curious to go around
- 8:10Speaker 5: the table and see who's a techie, who's a DP,
- 8:13Speaker 5: who's a camera.
- 8:14Speaker 6: About your movie?
- 8:15Speaker 2: So we talked a little bit about the royal influences,
- 8:17Speaker 2: but I was really curious and thank you. So what's
- 8:20Speaker 2: it called the Big Pit?
- 8:21Speaker 7: The Big Pit? Yeah? So basically what it is, it's
- 8:24Speaker 7: this divorced couple that live across from each other and
- 8:27Speaker 7: they both decide to start digging big pits outside their
- 8:29Speaker 7: house interpretation. But it's up to interpretation. What the meaning
- 8:33Speaker 7: of that is. I mean in the movie, I never
- 8:35Speaker 7: want to tell you what the pit is and where,
- 8:38Speaker 7: what it's about, and why they start both digging pits.
- 8:40Speaker 7: They live across from each other and they're divorced. And
- 8:43Speaker 7: for me, I guess for me, Wait, so then.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Mike, you're having a little trouble with that coffee mug.
- 8:54Speaker 1: No.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I mean I I've always had a strong grip. I've
- 8:58Speaker 4: always had a strong grip on everything I'm holding. Listen,
- 9:02Speaker 4: I I don't want to take focus away from your
- 9:05Speaker 4: pit thing. Because son, I love the Pit movie. I
- 9:09Speaker 4: was a big fan of when they when they when
- 9:11Speaker 4: they showed those pits. And you know something you just
- 9:15Speaker 4: said that I really liked you.
- 9:17Speaker 7: It feels like you're struggling here. Man.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Oh my god, Oh.
- 9:23Speaker 7: My god, you rea alcohol.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Oh my god, it's snolls, like is just pepper?
- 9:30Speaker 6: You smell a little snooker.
- 9:31Speaker 1: No, here's the thing, man, I.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Was a real punk up until I was forty five
- 9:36Speaker 4: years old. Up in three weeks ago, I turned it
- 9:39Speaker 4: around and that was the start of this film. And Son,
- 9:43Speaker 4: you said something that really stuck with me, which was
- 9:45Speaker 4: you don't want to tell the audience what it's about. Now,
- 9:48Speaker 4: I feel like I made a mistake with my film
- 9:51Speaker 4: because I filmed myself addressing the camera saying, what you're
- 9:55Speaker 4: about to see is two women in a hot tub
- 9:58Speaker 4: and it's a send up of feminism and the people
- 10:01Speaker 4: who oppose.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It, and then I showed the film. I feel like
- 10:05Speaker 1: I did it backwards.
- 10:06Speaker 7: I thought that your film, specifically, I think it was
- 10:08Speaker 7: very necessary.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Can I say that I thought his role wasn't Did
- 10:14Speaker 5: you guys think that was an active playing it?
- 10:15Speaker 2: I thought for sure when you came in, When you
- 10:18Speaker 2: came into this panel, I was like, I felt like
- 10:19Speaker 2: sir struck for a second because I was like, that
- 10:21Speaker 2: was so convincing as an unhinged.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Man and also so not grounded.
- 10:25Speaker 5: I would never expect to direct it to address this
- 10:28Speaker 5: the camera because I have never.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Acted on screen before, and I've never held a camera before,
- 10:34Speaker 4: so it's shocking.
- 10:35Speaker 7: It was very apparent that you've never held a camera before.
- 10:38Speaker 1: But I thought that was watching your films. I whispered
- 10:43Speaker 1: to my wife and said, how is that? How are
- 10:46Speaker 1: they keeping it so steady?
- 10:48Speaker 2: What did your wife think about? Kind of everything else.
- 10:52Speaker 7: And you're shooting a short film about two girls in
- 10:54Speaker 7: a jacuzzi.
- 10:56Speaker 1: My wife is very supportive. I married hers sort of
- 11:00Speaker 1: a like a sugar baby sugar mama situation, and so
- 11:04Speaker 1: she's very supportive of all my endeavor. She's the reason
- 11:06Speaker 1: I'm here.
- 11:07Speaker 7: Baby.
- 11:07Speaker 4: No, she's my sugar mama. She's a she's a she's
- 11:11Speaker 4: eighty five. Yeah, she fased me, she based me, and
- 11:14Speaker 4: she wants to support my dreams. So she's sending me
- 11:16Speaker 4: to film school. And I love you, Barbara, I just
- 11:20Speaker 4: love you. But I asked her, I said, Barba.
- 11:23Speaker 2: What do you think.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Why do you think all of their shots are so steady?
- 11:27Speaker 1: And she said, it's a dry pod. It's a dry pod.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Am I paying for nothing? And I wish I wish
- 11:35Speaker 1: I had known about that before I started. I wish
- 11:38Speaker 1: did known about a dry It reminded me.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Of Blair Witch Project, where it's like handheld. I thought
- 11:44Speaker 5: it was literally stylistic. I thought you got a steady cam.
- 11:47Speaker 5: And that's the reason why I was moving so much.
- 11:49Speaker 5: I thought it was a choice because I thought, sure.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I shouldn't have told you guys.
- 11:54Speaker 2: So you're talking about your film?
- 11:56Speaker 7: Yeah, No, no one is problem.
- 11:57Speaker 3: We can move on interpretation stuff.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Just curious Scott, because I was gonna actually ask you
- 12:02Speaker 2: the big pit. What is the bit?
- 12:04Speaker 7: I can't tell you. I can't. I want to, but
- 12:07Speaker 7: I can't.
- 12:07Speaker 2: It's can I tell you what I think it is?
- 12:09Speaker 7: Because go ahead.
- 12:10Speaker 6: The man and the woman are.
- 12:11Speaker 2: They're divorced and they're digging the pit together. So to me,
- 12:15Speaker 2: it feels pretty cut and dread that it is their marriage.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And it's hard to leave something even if you have
- 12:22Speaker 2: dug yourselves.
- 12:23Speaker 7: Into deep interesting.
- 12:26Speaker 3: No, you really can't do it.
- 12:27Speaker 6: You're gonna tell me it's not it.
- 12:28Speaker 7: I can't tell you what it is, but I'm telling
- 12:30Speaker 7: you that's definitely not it. You are way off the
- 12:33Speaker 7: mark there, and I'm honestly a little offended. I thought
- 12:36Speaker 7: it was so clear what it was about.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Well then why don't you just tell us what?
- 12:40Speaker 7: If you love the clarity, artistic artistic integrity. I signed
- 12:44Speaker 7: a contract with myself that I would never tell anybody
- 12:46Speaker 7: what this is about.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You signed a contract with yourself?
- 12:49Speaker 7: Yeah, you guys don't. It was your lawyer myself.
- 12:51Speaker 3: What did you go to school?
- 12:52Speaker 7: I went to USC and I go to USC.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Did they do that as a part of the program,
- 12:55Speaker 5: like to do the us to do like a contract
- 12:57Speaker 5: with yourself, the things.
- 12:58Speaker 7: You don't want to lie. I was reading The Artist's
- 12:59Speaker 7: Way and at the end there was some sort of
- 13:01Speaker 7: pasted and uh page there about a contractor.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I love that pamphlet. That's a great pan.
- 13:09Speaker 7: A great pan pamphlet, you know, if you have a
- 13:11Speaker 7: full book version of it too.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Oh well, I have the pamphlet and it is good.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Oh I was. I was really curious, and I wanted
- 13:18Speaker 2: to ask you guys. I was wondering thus kind of
- 13:20Speaker 2: swap curriculums, because I'm curious to see what kind of
- 13:24Speaker 2: things you guys are exploring alongside what I'm exploring and
- 13:29Speaker 2: seeing if you know, we're sitting the same things.
- 13:32Speaker 7: That's really interesting because I always wondered about, like what
- 13:34Speaker 7: other people are learning at different film schools, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 7: because I know I go to USC, I'm learning a lot.
- 13:39Speaker 7: But I'm just so interested in these different interpretations of films.
- 13:42Speaker 7: Like all of our films were so different. I mean,
- 13:45Speaker 7: my my film was pretty cut and dry auvant guarde
- 13:49Speaker 7: deb Your film was something so colorful, you know, it
- 13:52Speaker 7: had so much color and presence, so funny. Connor, your
- 13:55Speaker 7: film was very very moody, very moody moody.
- 14:01Speaker 4: I would say already I wanted to cry myself to
- 14:04Speaker 4: sleep after watching that.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Connor, So sad is a distant cousin of moody.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I was going for straight, quirky and it's it's it's
- 14:14Speaker 2: interesting to hear that you So, you guys didn't kind
- 14:16Speaker 2: of find it funnier, fanciful or like like escapist like
- 14:21Speaker 2: you guys didn't feel like.
- 14:22Speaker 4: It was like.
- 14:24Speaker 2: What like a little wact and like goofy and kind
- 14:26Speaker 2: of sardonic.
- 14:27Speaker 7: I thought it was very dark.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I felt kind of sad. I felt kind of kind
- 14:31Speaker 1: of like you tickled my sad boat.
- 14:32Speaker 2: It was definitely.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yours was very very sardonic.
- 14:37Speaker 7: Yeah, yours was very very like there was such a
- 14:40Speaker 7: hollow emptiness to it, which I found so interesting.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Oh, I guess that's I guess that came out what
- 14:48Speaker 4: they're going for, like, what movies are your are your
- 14:50Speaker 4: cops for this?
- 14:52Speaker 7: Yeah? What movies your tops?
- 14:54Speaker 1: Your cops?
- 14:55Speaker 2: Well for Inside the Coaster? Obviously, I was I was
- 14:59Speaker 2: thinking of else. Wonder lamb. There's a lot of influences.
- 15:03Speaker 1: There, right, who wh whoa, whoa freaky acid movie. Whoa.
- 15:07Speaker 3: But that is so different than what you did. I
- 15:09Speaker 3: was getting Chested by the Sea vibes.
- 15:12Speaker 6: Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, you were
- 15:14Speaker 6: getting that is a devastating film.
- 15:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:17Speaker 7: I also got that.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I was getting a lot of Manchester by the Sea.
- 15:21Speaker 7: No, I was going for I was getting the Father, No,
- 15:24Speaker 7: the Father, the Father, huh no, no, no, no, I
- 15:28Speaker 7: was going for it.
- 15:28Speaker 2: You know, black Adder meets Father, Ted meets Flea Bag
- 15:31Speaker 2: meets Mister.
- 15:32Speaker 7: I got like Manari if it ended with the kid dying.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Yeah, because I would.
- 15:35Speaker 4: I mean that scene where you light the house on
- 15:38Speaker 4: fire with the kids inside, that's pretty textbook Manchester.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Very so I was getting the end of Finding Nemo,
- 15:45Speaker 3: just the end.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I wasn't getting any grand Budapest hotel.
- 15:48Speaker 4: No.
- 15:48Speaker 6: So, so that wasn't fire.
- 15:49Speaker 2: That was spaghetti and the kids were okay.
- 15:53Speaker 1: So the fire what we saw was representing spaghett It.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Was the houses filling with spaghetti in the lot to learn.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I'm I'm glad you guys liked it, And those are
- 16:06Speaker 2: great films that you're comping it to. Like I'm like
- 16:09Speaker 2: actually like I'm I'm I'm chuffed that you like love
- 16:13Speaker 2: those comps that because I love those movies. But I
- 16:15Speaker 2: definitely was going for something a little more funny.
- 16:19Speaker 6: And that's what I'm working on.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Actually in class right now at U T, we my
- 16:23Speaker 2: I have my my teacher Lawler. We call him Lawler.
- 16:27Speaker 2: He actually has been the first name last first name
- 16:31Speaker 2: is Lewis and and we've been doing this thing where,
- 16:35Speaker 2: you know, he comes in and I come in, and
- 16:38Speaker 2: and we meet together after class and he shows me
- 16:40Speaker 2: a movie and then he says, do you think this
- 16:41Speaker 2: was a common year of drama? And I have to guess?
- 16:45Speaker 6: And it's hard.
- 16:46Speaker 7: It seems pretty easy.
- 16:47Speaker 4: So he quizes you on whether something is funny or
- 16:50Speaker 4: sad and you can't tell the difference.
- 16:52Speaker 2: No, it's been challenging, and it's hard for me because
- 16:56Speaker 2: you know, I'm a little kind of eccentric and interesting,
- 16:59Speaker 2: and everyone called the vest guy. You know, I wear
- 17:01Speaker 2: the vests, and I walk around and wear vests and
- 17:03Speaker 2: I wear a pork pie hat.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Well, let's test it right now, let's tast it right now.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Would you say pineapple express? What genre?
- 17:12Speaker 2: Would you say that derivative?
- 17:14Speaker 5: My god, the kid is slanted, not in a bad way,
- 17:20Speaker 5: just interesting way. Your brain is so interesting. It's like
- 17:23Speaker 5: a pineapple.
- 17:23Speaker 7: It's like very rush Hour, the Rush Hour series, Heartbreakhip,
- 17:30Speaker 7: my god, my god.
- 17:32Speaker 2: It's two people that have an opportunity to be friends,
- 17:34Speaker 2: but so much is standing in between them.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Drugs, murder, shoshank redemption.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Uh, that is a lighthearted bomb through a sewage system.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Okay, teenage mutant ninja turtles.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Oh, that is my bible.
- 17:50Speaker 1: That's your biggest fluid.
- 17:51Speaker 3: That's your Bible.
- 17:53Speaker 2: That's what I tell like all the other kids in
- 17:55Speaker 2: class when they don't understand my British references, because I'm
- 17:57Speaker 2: not actually an Anglo phile. As a b I would say,
- 18:01Speaker 2: my my true, true, true Bible is honestly Remains of
- 18:07Speaker 2: the Day with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.
- 18:09Speaker 7: Now is that a comedy to you or a that
- 18:12Speaker 7: is a.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Slice of life?
- 18:15Speaker 3: There's a slice of life. Let's let's little.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Just move on, baby, let's just and I've got a
- 18:21Speaker 4: lot to learn because I didn't realize how how these
- 18:24Speaker 4: movies are supposed to be characterized. This is opening up
- 18:27Speaker 4: my whole world.
- 18:27Speaker 2: You're right, I could teach you something.
- 18:29Speaker 7: I've got a question for you. Did you mean to
- 18:31Speaker 7: not edit once or cut anything.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I didn't know you could.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I thought it was a style mic. It's amazing, Thank you.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I'm glad that came across.
- 18:40Speaker 4: But because this was me just putting it in an
- 18:42Speaker 4: eyemovie and going, I don't know what these buttons mean.
- 18:45Speaker 7: And then I just hit export And you're a sophomore.
- 18:48Speaker 1: But I'm a sophomore. I think I got my life
- 18:51Speaker 1: together three weeks ago. I was a ram man.
- 18:55Speaker 3: What's that refreshing about you?
- 18:57Speaker 4: Is you?
- 18:58Speaker 1: JC?
- 19:01Speaker 7: So?
- 19:01Speaker 1: Sorry? Sorry for interrupting. Oh no, I know, I know,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I know what it's like.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Oh my god, Oh my god.
- 19:10Speaker 6: And just to be clear of when you say that
- 19:12Speaker 6: you're shocked at out behind me.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Okay, I've got a question for everybody. What do you
- 19:16Speaker 7: think your favorite I've got two questions. Actually, I've got
- 19:20Speaker 7: two questions. First, I want to know if you guys
- 19:22Speaker 7: have worked on any other films? And two, what is
- 19:24Speaker 7: your favorite scene from your short film?
- 19:26Speaker 5: Okay, but I really also I love your question about
- 19:28Speaker 5: training because he's.
- 19:32Speaker 4: No.
- 19:32Speaker 3: But I'll say this.
- 19:33Speaker 5: When we were talking about your film five seconds ago,
- 19:36Speaker 5: it reminded me of something we do in my training
- 19:38Speaker 5: where you know how you talked back to feedback and
- 19:41Speaker 5: why you they staple you to a wall.
- 19:44Speaker 3: You can't talk when you get feedback. You just have
- 19:46Speaker 3: to listen. You have to listen. You can't do anything.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Wow, And they say the director should let the film
- 19:52Speaker 5: speak for itself. So when you get the feedback, you just.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Gotta absorb it.
- 19:59Speaker 5: So the first time I ever I wrote this script,
- 20:02Speaker 5: my friend said, what are you doing writing about a
- 20:05Speaker 5: stripper with a rash?
- 20:06Speaker 3: Nobody kissed.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Like this?
- 20:10Speaker 3: They knotted up and down.
- 20:11Speaker 7: Right, But do you in your head you're saying no.
- 20:14Speaker 5: Right, in my head, I'm figuring it out, but I'm
- 20:17Speaker 5: not bringing any argument to the table.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I'm just letting it sit. And that's what we do
- 20:21Speaker 3: with n YU. They try to constrict you away.
- 20:25Speaker 6: It wasn't arguing.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I was just I was having a problem with myself because.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Doing it again.
- 20:30Speaker 6: Well, no, I'm just saying that there's sometimes.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I feel like I am living in a world that
- 20:34Speaker 2: people don't understand, and it's like I need a travel
- 20:37Speaker 2: guide to tell people where I'm coming from.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Trust me, man, the minute you free yourself up to
- 20:41Speaker 4: realize that you don't know anything, that's when life begins.
- 20:45Speaker 3: I feel like we know your training, what's your t'reraining?
- 20:50Speaker 7: Well, you see, it's kind of the opposite. They just
- 20:52Speaker 7: give you so much they give you. You know, my
- 20:56Speaker 7: budget was one hundred thousand dollars with red cam cameras,
- 21:00Speaker 7: really nice lenses. I got an actual Hollywood producer to
- 21:04Speaker 7: help me shoot it. Man alive, Yeah alive. Yeah, he
- 21:09Speaker 7: was alive.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Work on your project.
- 21:11Speaker 4: That was it.
- 21:12Speaker 3: It was an expression.
- 21:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Well, in Austin, people are so averse to seeing cameras
- 21:18Speaker 2: because they're living such normal lives down there that you
- 21:21Speaker 2: have to really really look out because they will cost
- 21:26Speaker 2: you an attack.
- 21:26Speaker 4: You.
- 21:26Speaker 2: So, we technically were classified as a construction job and
- 21:31Speaker 2: then we have to put up a bunch of barriers.
- 21:35Speaker 2: We have to wear vests while we're shooting and stuff
- 21:36Speaker 2: like that. Yeah.
- 21:37Speaker 4: I had to sneak into a hot tub to film
- 21:39Speaker 4: my film. I had to sneak into the Langham in Pasadena,
- 21:43Speaker 4: the hotel after nine pm. They don't check and they
- 21:47Speaker 4: don't lock anything.
- 21:48Speaker 7: So those weren't actresses.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Don't fucking tell me that those were real women.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Well, I went to no I went to the Langham
- 21:58Speaker 1: and I saw who I could find. Well, releases.
- 22:02Speaker 4: I asked him, I said, to you girls want to
- 22:04Speaker 4: be in a movie, and they said yes.
- 22:08Speaker 2: You don't have to explain that it was. It was
- 22:09Speaker 2: all in the video because because you.
- 22:12Speaker 7: Turned the camera on in the car, you said what
- 22:15Speaker 7: you said.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Yeah, And then as you see you get out, we
- 22:18Speaker 2: see you talk to the woman in the lobby at
- 22:20Speaker 2: the Langham, and then we see you go into an
- 22:22Speaker 2: elevator you make small talk with somebody about I believe
- 22:27Speaker 2: it was a Spurs game that was on TV.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I talked about the Spurs game. It was messed up.
- 22:32Speaker 1: What happened to the Spurs.
- 22:33Speaker 7: It's just wonderful how they you accidentally did this and
- 22:36Speaker 7: got into a pretty good film festival.
- 22:38Speaker 4: And here's the thing, you guys, because I was not
- 22:41Speaker 4: able to figure out the technology how to edit this thing.
- 22:44Speaker 4: When I watched that on the screen the same time
- 22:46Speaker 4: you all did, that was the first time I knew
- 22:48Speaker 4: that I.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Was in an elevator and still filming. I had no
- 22:52Speaker 1: idea that was in my movie. You've never seen it.
- 22:54Speaker 7: Awesome, you just sent it.
- 22:58Speaker 2: You just sent it off.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Oh, I just sent it. You know, sometimes in life
- 23:02Speaker 1: you gotta just send it.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Good for you, Mike, I love that.
- 23:05Speaker 6: That's what we say.
- 23:07Speaker 7: That's what U I see. Do you guys say that
- 23:08Speaker 7: we said it? Send it all the time?
- 23:10Speaker 1: No, do you guys say send it?
- 23:12Speaker 4: No?
- 23:13Speaker 2: My teacher tells me, just think about this before you
- 23:16Speaker 2: do it.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Yes, just think.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Sit in the corner, we say, like in the corner.
- 23:19Speaker 7: Send it, like send it, you know, like send it, yeah,
- 23:24Speaker 7: like send it now, like send it?
- 23:26Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Okay, so we did training. What was your question?
- 23:29Speaker 7: I want to know best clip of your movie or
- 23:31Speaker 7: if you've had a movie past experience, go on, Brian Goode,
- 23:35Speaker 7: what was your favorite clip?
- 23:36Speaker 4: You know?
- 23:37Speaker 7: Can I talk about your film for a second?
- 23:38Speaker 2: Sure?
- 23:39Speaker 7: I love that moment kind of like your because your
- 23:43Speaker 7: film is what fifteen minutes?
- 23:44Speaker 2: Just about minutes?
- 23:46Speaker 7: Eight minutes, eight minutes? Sorry, I don't know. It just
- 23:48Speaker 7: felt fifteen in a good way and like an empty
- 23:50Speaker 7: holloway Manchester.
- 23:52Speaker 2: And I would say, and that's it, you know, it
- 23:53Speaker 2: actually was eight minutes, and so it actually should feel
- 23:56Speaker 2: like eight minutes if like following the clock.
- 23:57Speaker 7: No, it just had so much like like shallow depth
- 24:01Speaker 7: to it, you know, when you're in shallow water, but
- 24:02Speaker 7: it's still very freaky.
- 24:04Speaker 6: You know, oh, like a like a like a muddy beach.
- 24:08Speaker 7: Yeah, like a muddy foggy beach, a muddy beach, and
- 24:11Speaker 7: you feel something hits your legs.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Well, cheers, cheers to that thing.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:14Speaker 7: So my one of my favorite moments was like probably
- 24:16Speaker 7: two or three minutes in We're just like at the
- 24:18Speaker 7: second act break when your main character's fallen through the
- 24:21Speaker 7: coaster and they meet that person and they just start talking. Yes,
- 24:25Speaker 7: can you explain the scene before you get the constable?
- 24:30Speaker 4: This was supposed to be a come The word constable
- 24:32Speaker 4: to me sounds so quirky, but the way you played
- 24:34Speaker 4: him was so sad.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Mike that the way you speak is so harsh to
- 24:41Speaker 2: hear and face it.
- 24:44Speaker 1: It's just shocked.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I can't be offended.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I can only be shocked. It's absolutely heard of.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, what was everybody coming at, Mike?
- 24:55Speaker 1: I just turned my life around three weeks ago. You
- 24:58Speaker 1: all remind me of my k You have kids? Yeah,
- 25:02Speaker 1: I have a couple of kids.
- 25:03Speaker 7: How old are they?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Oh?
- 25:04Speaker 4: I got one who's ten and one who's eight. But
- 25:07Speaker 4: they live with their moms. One mom in Tennessee, one
- 25:10Speaker 4: mom in Nevada, and uh, but I love them. I
- 25:13Speaker 4: see them on Christmas.
- 25:15Speaker 2: They live with your ex wife and her ex wife.
- 25:19Speaker 3: It seems like they live together. Yes, so their moms.
- 25:23Speaker 6: I thought I thought you were like they live with
- 25:25Speaker 6: their moms.
- 25:26Speaker 2: One of the moms is in Tennessee.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Listen.
- 25:32Speaker 4: If you're a rambling man, you get around and you
- 25:35Speaker 4: sometimes you have a little piece of yourself in cities
- 25:38Speaker 4: you never intended to settle down in and indubitably, my man, listen, listen,
- 25:50Speaker 4: what were we talking about.
- 25:51Speaker 2: We're talking about my clip when the main character, the Constable,
- 25:54Speaker 2: meets and the Constable, as we know, it's a little
- 25:57Speaker 2: bit of a quirky guy, funny thing about the console
- 26:00Speaker 2: that he's always running late, but he's made of watches.
- 26:02Speaker 2: So I wanted to play that clip, and my really
- 26:05Speaker 2: really really good friend Terrence plays Connor in the movie.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Me named it for myself, and then my really really
- 26:13Speaker 2: good friend's uncle Davis plays.
- 26:19Speaker 3: You gotta go. I'm so late?
- 26:25Speaker 7: What's going on?
- 26:28Speaker 3: I'm so late?
- 26:30Speaker 4: I can't m h.
- 26:33Speaker 5: You even feel like the weight of the world is
- 26:35Speaker 5: crashing against you, and you feel like there's no reason
- 26:38Speaker 5: to live because you're so late.
- 26:39Speaker 7: What's that noise?
- 26:42Speaker 1: Dinging. It's still have to look out so this makes
- 26:54Speaker 1: you laugh.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Yes, Mike, I think it's funny because he's made out
- 26:59Speaker 2: of watches, which is it's like it's funny because he's
- 27:01Speaker 2: always late, so it's a little cheeky. If you guys
- 27:04Speaker 2: don't know a man.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Yearning to die.
- 27:06Speaker 3: I agree with Mike. For the first time, that was nuts,
- 27:09Speaker 3: That was sad, It was very that was it felt
- 27:11Speaker 3: like a drug trip.
- 27:12Speaker 4: But hey, if I'm wrong, I've been out of the
- 27:14Speaker 4: game for a while. If that's a funny movie, then
- 27:17Speaker 4: I'm learning and I'll laugh.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I'll laugh next time. Listen, Why was that funny to you?
- 27:25Speaker 2: Like, you know, everyone has different tastes, Like everyone has
- 27:28Speaker 2: different like you guys probably love things that I don't
- 27:30Speaker 2: think are funny. So it's like, I don't think we
- 27:32Speaker 2: need to sit around and talk about that.
- 27:34Speaker 6: Like I have a lot of.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Friends that think it's really really, really funny. Like I
- 27:39Speaker 2: have a lot of friends who've seen this same.
- 27:41Speaker 1: What do you do when you play the clip? What
- 27:42Speaker 1: what do your friends do?
- 27:44Speaker 2: They laugh? They laugh and laugh and laugh, they laugh
- 27:47Speaker 2: for so long and it's and they like it.
- 27:51Speaker 6: Like my friends are really really and they're really funny.
- 27:54Speaker 3: They laugh for a long time.
- 27:56Speaker 6: Yeah, they laugh for.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Like twenty thirty minutes, like like and I'm like to yeah,
- 28:01Speaker 2: I'm like, we can stop.
- 28:02Speaker 6: It's I feel like I'm at con. I feel like
- 28:04Speaker 6: I'm at con.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Whether they point at you or yeah, yeah, yeah they
- 28:07Speaker 2: point and then they go go back, go back, go back,
- 28:09Speaker 2: go back. So that scene again and then we watch
- 28:11Speaker 2: it and we'd laugh and laugh.
- 28:12Speaker 3: And laugh and laugh.
- 28:15Speaker 7: No, it's they're making they're making fun of it.
- 28:18Speaker 6: I'm I have headphones in two.
- 28:21Speaker 2: I'm here in the podcast room to.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Listen.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Listen, guys, I'll break it to them. Hey, your friends
- 28:28Speaker 4: were making fun of you.
- 28:30Speaker 7: Man, I'm not real friends.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Those guys aren't your friends.
- 28:33Speaker 7: You should switch to USC join us. I feel like
- 28:36Speaker 7: we're good guys.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Listen, man, I'll be your friend, but definitely your friend.
- 28:41Speaker 1: But come to n y U.
- 28:42Speaker 3: I think you just need to grow a little bit
- 28:44Speaker 3: of a backbone.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Well, I applied to those places and I didn't get in.
- 28:51Speaker 2: I did get into Chapin, but I don't think I
- 28:57Speaker 2: want to go there.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Connadab, let's talk about your film.
- 29:01Speaker 7: What is your favorite scene?
- 29:03Speaker 2: And then you can say what you were gonna say
- 29:04Speaker 2: to me?
- 29:04Speaker 3: No, I just felt bad. Oh god, all right, my
- 29:09Speaker 3: favorite scene? I mean, what's your favorite scene in my movie?
- 29:12Speaker 3: I don't know my Okay?
- 29:13Speaker 7: I mean, can I talk about because I really really
- 29:15Speaker 7: loved your movie. I thought it was so smart. I
- 29:17Speaker 7: think when the rash starts speaking and kind of like
- 29:19Speaker 7: develops a mind of its own, and then that client
- 29:23Speaker 7: is just like what. I don't want to spoil anything,
- 29:25Speaker 7: but can you just talk about like the making of
- 29:27Speaker 7: that scene, like why you chose that.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 5: I'm friends with a lot of artists who like destruction.
- 29:34Speaker 5: So we took we took I have a couple of
- 29:36Speaker 5: friends in Brooklyn. We took some glass bottles, shook them around,
- 29:42Speaker 5: threw them at a wall, spray painted those glass bottles,
- 29:45Speaker 5: put them together, found a way to animatize it, get
- 29:48Speaker 5: it to move, get it to talk.
- 29:49Speaker 3: I thought, what is so.
- 29:50Speaker 5: Cool about animating a rash or finding a way to
- 29:54Speaker 5: make a rash move using class? And I thought, but
- 30:00Speaker 5: it would it would be too high brow for a moment.
- 30:02Speaker 5: But then I loved it. I saw it on screen
- 30:04Speaker 5: and I said, I think this is my rash.
- 30:06Speaker 4: I think that's my It really blew my mind because
- 30:09Speaker 4: it looked like you had the people at U what
- 30:11Speaker 4: is that?
- 30:11Speaker 1: But what is that company called Boston Mechanics, Boston Robotics.
- 30:16Speaker 1: They look like you had one of those robots covered
- 30:19Speaker 1: in glass bottles. I don't know where you got the
- 30:21Speaker 1: funding for that. That looked expensive.
- 30:24Speaker 5: I just have a bunch of crazy fucking friends and
- 30:26Speaker 5: we do crazy fucking shit like throw glass bottles at walls.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I love.
- 30:30Speaker 2: I'd love to see the clip.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Yeah, let's play it.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Hey lady, Hey lady, stop squeaking around the pole. See
- 30:38Speaker 2: what you're doing to me?
- 30:39Speaker 1: Squake, squake, squake, squeak. Listen. If you want to see
- 30:44Speaker 1: me squeak around the pole, you're gonna have to pay up.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Oh come on, you don't have any fucking money, do you, Debbie?
- 30:53Speaker 1: Come on, you don't have any fucking money, do you.
- 30:56Speaker 6: I might not have money, but you have a rash.
- 31:00Speaker 2: The rash.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Oh fuck, you won't.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Like my rash when she's angry, so you better pony up.
- 31:06Speaker 7: Listen here, bust the rhymes.
- 31:08Speaker 1: You gotta get fucking lost out of here otherwise I
- 31:10Speaker 1: want to fucking slap on your.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Oh lady, what the is this?
- 31:14Speaker 1: Get him? Rash clean clean clean, pop.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Off poppy, Get the fuck out of here, otherwise I'm
- 31:28Speaker 3: gonna show you the fucking door.
- 31:31Speaker 6: I'm never coming back to this scrip.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Nice jop rashy Tomorrow we do it again, girls night.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I have I have a couple inspirations.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Grease, oh yeah, the dancing movie.
- 31:49Speaker 3: I got a lot of that from that, thanks Mike.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I got Grease that was so good. I got Secret
- 31:56Speaker 3: Life of Pets, yes, very very much.
- 31:59Speaker 7: Pets.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Oh yeah, side and I want you to talk like
- 32:02Speaker 3: the Secret Life of Pets. And they just fonded well
- 32:05Speaker 3: to that.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Grash really felt like a pet to me.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:09Speaker 2: And the man who played the patron was I could
- 32:13Speaker 2: tell that was influenced with Supergo Pets because that was
- 32:15Speaker 2: Louis K.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Yes, it was who I How did you book a
- 32:19Speaker 1: guy like that?
- 32:20Speaker 5: He's a family friend, okay, and I'm one of his
- 32:24Speaker 5: only friends that believes he's a great guy.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Oh oh, even I know that's a collar talk on
- 32:33Speaker 1: that one.
- 32:33Speaker 3: What do you know, Mike, what do you know about
- 32:36Speaker 3: Louis K?
- 32:37Speaker 4: You know, I know that a lot of women are upset,
- 32:41Speaker 4: a lot of women just like yourself and your demographic who.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Let you speak for women, Mike, camera on.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Oh, here I go again. You know what, I'm sorry.
- 32:52Speaker 6: I'm gonna be honest. This is a great area.
- 32:54Speaker 2: This woman is defending Louis K, so speaking secretly between us.
- 33:01Speaker 7: Yeah, I think you're all right.
- 33:02Speaker 2: I think you're okay.
- 33:03Speaker 1: This is freak in my brain because everyone's telling me
- 33:07Speaker 1: believe women, but you guys are saying the Luisy K
- 33:11Speaker 1: is a.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Bad No, Mike, this is a final straw. You first,
- 33:15Speaker 5: she talked down on women. Second you say women can't speak.
- 33:19Speaker 5: Then you tell me that maybe Louisy K is a
- 33:22Speaker 5: bad guy and maybe she'd be canceled my ass.
- 33:26Speaker 1: You know what, I'm sorry. I know the world is
- 33:28Speaker 1: moving too fast for me.
- 33:31Speaker 7: Well, let's talk about your movie, Mike.
- 33:34Speaker 1: My favorite scene was in the hot tub.
- 33:38Speaker 3: It takes place in the hods up beside the car.
- 33:40Speaker 3: When you walk out from the car, it does seem too.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Bly no scene break, it's kind of just one lost.
- 33:50Speaker 4: But the second half of the first and only singing
- 33:54Speaker 4: where the girls are in the hot tub and they're
- 33:56Speaker 4: talking about their summer plans. I thought it was some
- 33:59Speaker 4: of the best stuff I've seen it in a while.
- 34:02Speaker 4: I because I mean, obviously those.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Are real women. Those are real women.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Let's watch it. Yeah, so she said that she just
- 34:12Speaker 3: didn't get the text, and I thought that was stupid.
- 34:14Speaker 4: That's really weird, Like she wouldn't, she wouldn't, like she
- 34:17Speaker 4: absolutely saw it. Like it's been six hours, so like
- 34:20Speaker 4: I don't think like I think she just honestly felt
- 34:22Speaker 4: weird ever since that party.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Hey oo, wow, that is some good stuff from these girls.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Keep it up.
- 34:30Speaker 5: Okay, I should have just emailed the group and just
- 34:33Speaker 5: did a BCC at respect, but it was it just
- 34:36Speaker 5: felt just.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Tacky, you know what I mean?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I get.
- 34:39Speaker 4: I mean you're in a tough position because like you
- 34:42Speaker 4: didn't want to hire her, like she's family and that
- 34:44Speaker 4: doesn't These girls.
- 34:46Speaker 7: Are sorry, you cannot be in here.
- 34:49Speaker 1: What what these girls said? I could be there with
- 34:53Speaker 1: this camera. No we didn't.
- 34:55Speaker 3: We're staying about.
- 34:57Speaker 7: Yeah, we'll get them. I'm so sorry. We'll comp your realm.
- 35:00Speaker 7: Let's get him out. Hey, hey, hey, hey, come here,
- 35:02Speaker 7: come on, come on, give me this, give me how
- 35:04Speaker 7: do you turn this off?
- 35:06Speaker 6: I'm gonna do.
- 35:08Speaker 7: That's how your movie ends.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a real cliphanger because you don't know what
- 35:12Speaker 1: it's gonna happen.
- 35:13Speaker 7: We all know what happens.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we do.
- 35:16Speaker 2: My question is, so you ended it there, but then
- 35:19Speaker 2: there's a freeze frame on your face as you're kind
- 35:21Speaker 2: of being yanked out and you're inked out of the
- 35:23Speaker 2: hotp because you're in the tub, and that stayed for
- 35:29Speaker 2: Did you gets marked that?
- 35:30Speaker 6: I think three four minutes it.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Because I think I thought that Don't You Forget About
- 35:34Speaker 1: Me was gonna play. When I freeze framed it and
- 35:37Speaker 1: kept it on song, I think I thought that that's
- 35:40Speaker 1: what happened.
- 35:40Speaker 3: You thought or you tried.
- 35:43Speaker 7: I'm curious you thought or did you think you thought?
- 35:48Speaker 7: I think I thought that you don't remember you don't.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Remember if that's what you thought was you did you
- 35:54Speaker 2: bring the file into the doing.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Or did you think that, babe, it'll happen because you
- 35:59Speaker 3: thought of it happened.
- 36:00Speaker 8: So I think that I thought that I was gonna
- 36:04Speaker 8: place Don't You Forget About Me into the timeline, But
- 36:08Speaker 8: then I realized I had no freaking glue how to
- 36:11Speaker 8: do that.
- 36:12Speaker 4: So what we landed on was the freeze frame for
- 36:15Speaker 4: three minutes. But in my head as I was watching it,
- 36:18Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys got that. I think
- 36:19Speaker 4: it was pretty implied that.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Don't you forget about No, you didn't hear that. You
- 36:25Speaker 1: didn't hear that?
- 36:25Speaker 5: Imply a song from forty years ago, I'll say this,
- 36:29Speaker 5: not even from four years ago.
- 36:31Speaker 3: It's hard to imply a song in silence.
- 36:33Speaker 7: Any song, anything, say it's implied.
- 36:36Speaker 2: I'm like Wes, I don't.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Think a song has ever been implied, never, never implied.
- 36:41Speaker 1: No, the song is implied. You'll learn when you get older.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Wes Anderson movies makes me so sad.
- 36:45Speaker 7: So now it's big time for me. Okay, Yeah, what
- 36:50Speaker 7: was your favorite scene for me?
- 36:51Speaker 1: Okay, so what was your favorite scene?
- 36:53Speaker 5: Oh?
- 36:53Speaker 1: You want us to answer?
- 36:55Speaker 5: I think my favorite scene for you was the really
- 37:00Speaker 5: abrupt opening. Yeah almost almost, Yeah, let's watch it.
- 37:07Speaker 2: The Big Pit.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Won't you dig with me? Jerry, won't you say something?
- 37:16Speaker 1: Won't you dig with me?
- 37:18Speaker 7: We're divorced, Nancy?
- 37:20Speaker 3: I fly like paper, geh, I like plant. If you
- 37:24Speaker 3: get me in the boat I got viated in.
- 37:26Speaker 1: That's awesome. I saw that song in four different films
- 37:30Speaker 1: in this festival.
- 37:31Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, there was a lot. I was kind of
- 37:33Speaker 7: upset about that. I thought it was gonna be the
- 37:35Speaker 7: only film that used it. Yeah, and yeah, thank you guys.
- 37:37Speaker 7: That was you know, it's a really you know, it's
- 37:40Speaker 7: big thing to shoot. But I thought, you know, as
- 37:41Speaker 7: a college kid, graduate high school, I was, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 7: I could I could take this on. I deal with
- 37:46Speaker 7: a lot in my film specifically, I really try to
- 37:49Speaker 7: aim for things that make people uncomfortable and they don't
- 37:51Speaker 7: want to talk about. So, you know, I've talked about
- 37:53Speaker 7: police brutality in my last film, and before that it
- 37:56Speaker 7: was kind of about immigration. I've handled abortion and and
- 38:00Speaker 7: I really aim to take things on the people make
- 38:02Speaker 7: people uncomfortable because this is America. I don't know if
- 38:05Speaker 7: you guys know that, but I do. Yeah, this is America. Yeah,
- 38:10Speaker 7: and these things happen here and we're not allowed to
- 38:13Speaker 7: talk about them. And I just want to lift the
- 38:15Speaker 7: veil of ignorance. And I think I'm the person to
- 38:18Speaker 7: do it. I think I you know, I do race
- 38:20Speaker 7: relationship movies. I do a lot of good stuff.
- 38:23Speaker 5: Just wait to do it all under interpretation, because well, yeah,
- 38:27Speaker 5: that's what I want it like.
- 38:28Speaker 3: It has a strong message versus yours. It's just very
- 38:30Speaker 3: open end.
- 38:31Speaker 7: Well that's the point, you know, I want these all
- 38:32Speaker 7: to end with you figuring out what you want to
- 38:34Speaker 7: glom from it.
- 38:35Speaker 5: You know, yeah at Newcastle United uh University, we don't.
- 38:40Speaker 3: They don't teach that.
- 38:42Speaker 6: Oh it's not Newcastle United University?
- 38:45Speaker 2: And you you why you inn I t.
- 38:50Speaker 3: United Spwcastle spell University. I don't think this is on me.
- 38:59Speaker 3: I think this is on them.
- 39:00Speaker 6: How do they spell it?
- 39:00Speaker 3: They spell it with a y y u and that's
- 39:04Speaker 3: their fault.
- 39:05Speaker 1: It's not you didn't invent the school.
- 39:07Speaker 7: No, you definitely didn't invent that school they teach.
- 39:10Speaker 3: Oh, I'm so sorry. Did you think I went to
- 39:11Speaker 3: New York University?
- 39:13Speaker 7: Yes?
- 39:14Speaker 2: Oh yeah, No, Where's where is Newcastle unitedst? Newcastle?
- 39:19Speaker 3: Where Newcastle?
- 39:21Speaker 7: Uh?
- 39:21Speaker 3: Montana?
- 39:22Speaker 2: Because there's a Newcastle on the Thames in London, in England.
- 39:26Speaker 2: I was really hoping you went there.
- 39:29Speaker 3: He's such a funny one.
- 39:31Speaker 6: Do you think that's funny?
- 39:32Speaker 1: No?
- 39:32Speaker 7: No, we had funny, like like bizarre you go to Newcastle?
- 39:37Speaker 1: Yeah, what's going on at Newcastle?
- 39:39Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 39:40Speaker 6: Well what's the program like? Because we were thinking of NYU.
- 39:42Speaker 1: I'm so sorry.
- 39:43Speaker 5: Oh my god, I should have been more clear. I
- 39:45Speaker 5: forget that there are two film There are two film programs.
- 39:48Speaker 5: One in n YU wanted Newcastle United University actually film
- 39:53Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, but I forget that there are two n
- 39:56Speaker 5: y U film program Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:59Speaker 7: I go to actually uh United Union for uh southernly
- 40:06Speaker 7: uh charm.
- 40:07Speaker 4: What.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought this whole time, you're going to UC.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Yeah us did even go to a college?
- 40:12Speaker 6: You go to the Union.
- 40:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm just a union boy.
- 40:14Speaker 3: What do you mean you grew up in the union.
- 40:16Speaker 1: What do you mean union man? Was a union man steel?
- 40:20Speaker 7: Yeah, and we're in southern charm. We're in the business
- 40:23Speaker 7: of southern charm.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Such a weird Mike, tell me you go to Chapman University.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I go to Chapman University.
- 40:30Speaker 6: That's right.
- 40:31Speaker 7: Do you say sound like chat Man?
- 40:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I go to Chapman University. He's the guy who
- 40:37Speaker 4: invented chapstick and he started a film school.
- 40:41Speaker 7: This makes sense while you're in a sophomore after three
- 40:44Speaker 7: three weeks, but you definitely.
- 40:46Speaker 4: I sped through the first program. I sped through jen ed,
- 40:49Speaker 4: so I went straight to sophomore year. Man.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Mister chap is a good guy.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Oh, it's one guy.
- 40:55Speaker 1: He's a good it's one teacher. Yeah, he does all
- 40:58Speaker 1: of it. He does phil me does pee.
- 41:01Speaker 7: He does.
- 41:03Speaker 3: College program in a pe program.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Yeah, well they want to keep a spit. Listen, I
- 41:08Speaker 1: love you. Do you go to tell me you've never
- 41:11Speaker 1: seen you around chatman?
- 41:13Speaker 2: No, I go to the University of Texas as at Austin.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I said that as soon as we started. And I
- 41:19Speaker 2: do go to the college. And I cannot believe all
- 41:23Speaker 2: three of you have been accosting me for my style
- 41:26Speaker 2: when none of you are going to a prestigious school
- 41:28Speaker 2: except for me.
- 41:30Speaker 7: Well, you know what, before you get ahead itself, let's
- 41:32Speaker 7: play that last clipier film. Let's play the last clippier filmy.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Come Back from the Coast, Come Back from the Coaster.
- 41:47Speaker 4: No, I'm gonna set.
- 41:49Speaker 1: It a flame.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Zip, No, zip, I'm gonna set it a flame.
- 41:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna set it a flame.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Come back from an I said it a flame.
- 42:02Speaker 3: I like I like planes. If you catch me on
- 42:05Speaker 3: the boat, I got theater.
- 42:06Speaker 1: That's a good song. I love that song.
- 42:09Speaker 2: A little easter eg for that one. My roommates do improv.
- 42:13Speaker 2: If you listen really close, you're gonna hear the practice.
- 42:16Speaker 7: Wow.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Now that is what makes the movie funny.
- 42:20Speaker 5: But my thing is you, I think we shouldn't be
- 42:23Speaker 5: surprised that some of us aren't from prestigious schools and
- 42:26Speaker 5: some are, because I mean, this film festival was just
- 42:29Speaker 5: apply to get in, right, I just sent in my
- 42:31Speaker 5: film and I.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Got in fifteen big American dollars.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Yeah, someone told me on the way and one hundred
- 42:37Speaker 2: percent success rate, I mean acceptance rate.
- 42:40Speaker 3: That's awesome success. Oh damn, Sorry, damn, I wish it
- 42:44Speaker 3: were that.
- 42:45Speaker 4: You guys, well, I'd love to know. You guys are
- 42:47Speaker 4: a bunch of bright young kids. What are everyone's big
- 42:50Speaker 4: Hollywood goals for the future?
- 42:53Speaker 1: Do you want to do that path?
- 42:55Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 42:55Speaker 7: For me, I think I'm just gonna focus on getting
- 42:58Speaker 7: better deals for the union that I work for and
- 43:01Speaker 7: just kind of push that really focus.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Union of Southerly Charm, Yeah, Union.
- 43:05Speaker 7: Of Soularly Charm. We're really trying to push for some benefits.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Right now, okay, and benefits for who the.
- 43:10Speaker 7: Men that have Southernly charm.
- 43:12Speaker 3: So it's just like a union for men.
- 43:14Speaker 7: Yes, it's more of a gentleman's club, okay.
- 43:16Speaker 1: And so you think you should get benefits.
- 43:19Speaker 7: Yes, yes, So we're very, very charming and we have
- 43:23Speaker 7: such a nice way of manners.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Where does the film school come in? My head is spinning.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Mostly, Mike, mine too.
- 43:31Speaker 7: Most of these men just give me a little bit
- 43:33Speaker 7: of money, you know, they give you know, they're very
- 43:35Speaker 7: wealthy down the South, so they give up money for
- 43:38Speaker 7: me to make my films, which is more of just passion.
- 43:41Speaker 7: And I want to show that off. But really, at
- 43:42Speaker 7: the end of the day, all I'm trying to do
- 43:44Speaker 7: with these films is to showcase suddenly charm. You know what,
- 43:48Speaker 7: I've given too much away about the whole I've given
- 43:50Speaker 7: way to.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Southerly charm.
- 43:54Speaker 7: I just didn't know that. You guys didn't pick that up.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Oh the pit is Southerly charm.
- 43:59Speaker 6: So that film is litter, really propaganda.
- 44:01Speaker 7: Yes, yeah, I'm in the business apartment for a gentleman's club.
- 44:06Speaker 7: It was a more of a fraternity of men.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Oh, there was that sign in the middle of the pit,
- 44:12Speaker 4: like that little piece of paper she found that said
- 44:14Speaker 4: we want you to join USC.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Yes, that was open for an interpreter.
- 44:19Speaker 2: It was, And it was when we were watching the screening, Mike,
- 44:21Speaker 2: I heard you say that looks good.
- 44:23Speaker 3: And that, and that's when I knew I didn't like you.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Also, that did catch me.
- 44:30Speaker 7: And I also thought it was very interesting when Yours
- 44:33Speaker 7: was airing, you went, oh, this must be mine.
- 44:36Speaker 3: Oh, and I loved you.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Now that i'm putting it all together, I'm putting it
- 44:40Speaker 5: all together that when you played yours, when you went,
- 44:43Speaker 5: oh god, I'm supposed to cut or it just plays
- 44:47Speaker 5: like that.
- 44:47Speaker 3: I heard all that in the back.
- 44:48Speaker 4: It was a big discovery after discovery after discovery. When
- 44:53Speaker 4: that image popped up on the screen, I had no
- 44:55Speaker 4: idea because I thought, who's this filmmaker?
- 44:58Speaker 1: And then I realized that that's me.
- 45:01Speaker 4: I did that.
- 45:02Speaker 2: I do want to say, you know, I think we're
- 45:04Speaker 2: brushing over something, and I think you should get a
- 45:06Speaker 2: little bit of credit for this.
- 45:07Speaker 6: There is one cut in the movie. It is the last.
- 45:09Speaker 2: It's the ending, and I could tell you're trying to
- 45:11Speaker 2: do credits, and you wrote Mike on a post it,
- 45:13Speaker 2: and it's just a slow zoom into a posted This
- 45:15Speaker 2: is Mic on it.
- 45:16Speaker 4: The fact that I was able to achieve a slow
- 45:18Speaker 4: zoom is an accomplishment in itself.
- 45:20Speaker 2: It's manually done. It was clearly manually done.
- 45:22Speaker 3: Especially when you get down you go my knees.
- 45:27Speaker 1: I said, my knees, my knees, my knees, My god,
- 45:31Speaker 1: what did you shoot that up? Oh? Like a like
- 45:34Speaker 1: a one of those Uh what do you shoot?
- 45:35Speaker 4: The videos that are on AFV on Oh my god,
- 45:39Speaker 4: Oh my god, camera two thousand and one.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Yeah, America's the bunniest own videos. I called America's monniest
- 45:47Speaker 1: own videos. I said, what do you shoot on? Everybody
- 45:49Speaker 1: who said to videos, what did they shoot on?
- 45:50Speaker 4: You?
- 45:50Speaker 5: Gotta get your money back from mister Chapman because he
- 45:53Speaker 5: ain't teaching me.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Shit man, fifty thousand dollars a week. But I think
- 45:58Speaker 4: it's worth it. I think it's worth it because he
- 46:00Speaker 4: turned my life around. And I mean to answer my
- 46:03Speaker 4: own question, I don't really have Hollywood aspirations. I'm just
- 46:07Speaker 4: doing it to be a better guy and to be
- 46:08Speaker 4: a better dad. And I think with babes in the water,
- 46:12Speaker 4: I like to say, I did that.
- 46:14Speaker 7: May see your kids?
