- 0:00Hello and welcome to another episode of the Christian Reeve
- 0:03Podcast. Today's guest is Mr.
- 0:06Buchmeister. He was on the show in the very,
- 0:11very beginning, three years ago. Right now I just want to take a
- 0:16minute to just think about this. When I first started this show
- 0:19three years ago, I had no idea what I was going to do with the
- 0:23show. The first episode was me
- 0:26reflecting on at the time being 27.
- 0:29Now I'm 30, so I'm getting ancient.
- 0:31And me and Buck, I thought, do we meet on Reddit?
- 0:36Do you know, we'll get into that?
- 0:37It was Reddit. It was Reddit.
- 0:39Yeah, we met on Reddit. And I was like, yeah, I can have
- 0:42a guest. And we had a great time.
- 0:45And I would like to think over the last three years that I've
- 0:47become a better interviewer, a better discussion is podcaster.
- 0:51Anyway, it felt very fitting three years later to have my
- 0:55very first guest back on the show.
- 0:57So welcome man. How you doing?
- 0:59Nice. Nice.
- 1:00Nice to be back, man. Yeah.
- 1:03It's been a very hectic time for me.
- 1:04I haven't even podcasted, like been a guest or done anything in
- 1:08like I want to say two years now or whatever.
- 1:11I've been like very, very busy. Like I haven't even been
- 1:14watching. Like the people that I regularly
- 1:17watch that I usually keep up with your podcast, but I haven't
- 1:19kept up with anybody for like the last two years.
- 1:21It's just been crazy. But it's cool to be back.
- 1:24It's cool to chop it up with you again.
- 1:26Thank you, man. It's honestly a pleasure.
- 1:28We'll talk us through a little bit what you've been doing, cuz
- 1:31I know that I've been paying attention to all your
- 1:33illustrations and stuff and what you're doing with comics, and
- 1:36we'll get into that. But, I mean, it's been three
- 1:39years. Two years, Yeah, sorry.
- 1:41Two years since I last kind of chopped out with you on the
- 1:45Instagram, lives and such. So what's what's happening in
- 1:47your life, man? What's What's going on?
- 1:50Well, my family business just sprung up and now I'm in charge
- 1:55by default. So that's been fun.
- 1:59Matt, what can you, can you talk about the business or is it
- 2:02private? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:03It's like rentals and property and all of that boring stuff.
- 2:07Like, yeah, my, my dad started it like 2.
- 2:10Like he started at 2015 and then like he's just decided to hand
- 2:13it over to me and you know like African household, you don't,
- 2:17you don't get to say no. So.
- 2:20Been running, I've been running all of that and that's been a
- 2:24little bit hectic. Been learning a lot about South
- 2:26African law, which is, you know, and a lot about property law and
- 2:33all of that stuff. And then on the creative side,
- 2:35though, I don't know if there's like, I don't know if you heard
- 2:38the news, but like two years ago and I'm RIP Chadwick Boseman
- 2:42like he passed and they were doing the whole Black Panther
- 2:45thing. And yeah, very sad time for
- 2:48everybody. But like, Marvel decided to kill
- 2:51the character indefinitely it looks like.
- 2:53And so I've been on this campaign started by a guy called
- 2:58Emmanuel Noiset. I think that's how you say it.
- 3:00He's called Emmanuelle Reviews. So he started a whole petition
- 3:04called Recast Chala. So basically what I've been
- 3:08doing for the last year and a half or so is been trying to
- 3:11make like comic book content and illustration content around the
- 3:15character because I'm just trying to get people to see the
- 3:17value in the character. Because I I the killing of the
- 3:22character for me is it's not a good business move.
- 3:24And I and I think it hurts the IT hurts the MCU and the whole
- 3:28industry as a whole and all of that stuff.
- 3:30So that's been like my primary focus.
- 3:32Like I haven't even worked on a lot of my own stuff.
- 3:35Well outside of outsourcing it to other people like Art of
- 3:39Marvelous Wonder, there's a really cool guy.
- 3:41He's been helping me with me on wave.
- 3:44But yeah, primarily the focus right now has been to try and
- 3:48get to Tallah. The characters specifically did
- 3:51this back into people's main purview right now.
- 3:55So that's those two things have been eating up a lot.
- 3:58And also like Comic Con stuff I'm doing, I'm doing small
- 4:02interviews again, like 5-10 minute interviews again, which
- 4:05has been very fun talking to local creators and all of that
- 4:09stuff. So basically those three things,
- 4:11they've just been eating my time for the last like two years or
- 4:14so. Yeah, let's focus on the the
- 4:17Black Panther thing because this is something I've seen all over
- 4:21your social media for a long time now.
- 4:24And I I found it very interesting because okay, I'll
- 4:28give you my take and then and then we can chop it off and go
- 4:31back and forth on this because I think it's an interesting point
- 4:36obviously. Yeah, as you as you mentioned,
- 4:37Chadwick Boseman unfortunately passed away a couple of years
- 4:40ago and they did decide to essentially, yeah, kill off the
- 4:45character in Black Panther, Wakanda Forever, which is the
- 4:48sequel to the original Black Panther in 2018.
- 4:51I think it was released and I I, I think many of us were kind of
- 4:55wondering what they're going to do with the character, how
- 4:57they're going to do it. I I think story wise, my take is
- 5:02I think they did the best they could do as far as like giving a
- 5:05good send off and and making a point of like how important that
- 5:09character was and and certainly like Chadwick's portrayal of
- 5:13that character. And I will say with the idea of
- 5:17recasting him, there was a lot of talk of that.
- 5:20And I feel like I don't know, it's one of those.
- 5:24It's one of those instances where the actor is very
- 5:26synonymous with the character. And it's not to say that you
- 5:30can't recast the character, you can't have another person play
- 5:34the same character. When we've seen it with Joker,
- 5:36obviously that's very synonymous with the Heath Ledger's
- 5:39betrayal. But there's been plenty of
- 5:40people who've done the Joker before and since then and have
- 5:43done it well. So and also, you know, I suppose
- 5:47on the other side of things, you know, there's a lot of
- 5:50opportunities for black actors to potentially go into this role
- 5:54and give their own portrayal. But here's the thing, if you did
- 5:57recast Black Panther, it is going to be a different
- 6:02portrayal. It's not going to be the same as
- 6:04Timber Boseman's betrayal, and I don't think anyone would want
- 6:07that. You wouldn't want someone trying
- 6:09to do the same thing. You want something different.
- 6:12And I think something that's interesting with the current
- 6:14phase of Marvel is this idea of like supposedly it's headed
- 6:19towards a direction in in which case you can potentially bring
- 6:22old actors back and have them playing a different version of
- 6:27themselves and and such. As I understand it there's the
- 6:31whole Scrolls thing. Spoilers.
- 6:33Sorry. With this idea that like maybe
- 6:35the person you thought was actually the real person is not
- 6:39actually that person. So basically my point is there's
- 6:42opportunities to to recast this character but then also with
- 6:47what they did and what kind of forever was they they made.
- 6:51I can't remember her name surely.
- 6:53Is it and his sister. Yeah.
- 6:55They made surely essentially the Black Panther, which I don't
- 6:59know. I thought that was a kind of a
- 7:00logical move story wise. But I know you have your
- 7:03reservations, so let's. Yeah.
- 7:05Well, reservations is a very, that's that's a very mild way of
- 7:10putting it For me specifically, it's just when we get into
- 7:15Chadwick, like just to go back to 2018 and it was a huge thing.
- 7:20I remember we even had a conversation about it at the
- 7:22time. And all of that stuff.
- 7:24But I remember at the time I had to defend Chadwick's performance
- 7:28a lot. Like a lot of people said that
- 7:31in the Black Panther one movie he was the weakest character,
- 7:35which I rewatched it recently because I had another Twitter
- 7:37debate, a four hour Twitter debate, which was.
- 7:41Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you know, but, you know,
- 7:44people were civil. It wasn't like regular Twitter
- 7:46because, you know, regular Twitter.
- 7:47Everybody's just, yeah. Like, I I I've never been called
- 7:55racist by other black people so much in my entire life.
- 7:59That's mad, OK? I'm racist because I no, I'm I'm
- 8:04racist because I wanted to recast the child.
- 8:06That's apparently the logic I I don't understand.
- 8:10OK, I don't get that. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:12And it you said business, you said you think it's not a good
- 8:16business decision with what they moved forward with.
- 8:19So why is it a good business decision to recast this
- 8:24particular character? Is it because this particular
- 8:29character has more legs? Do you not think Sheree could be
- 8:32a good follow up? Like, why is it that you feel
- 8:35that way? Well, as a person who read the
- 8:37source material, one, the MCU has already done Legacy already.
- 8:42We had two Hawkeyes, we had two Thors.
- 8:45So for a situation where there's two Black Panthers, that's not
- 8:49impossible. And it's in the source material.
- 8:53There was a time where Shuri was Queen and Tatala was the King of
- 8:56the Dead. So basically what happened is,
- 9:00is that boss to the goddess of Wakanda whatever made to Chala
- 9:05her specific personal Black Panther.
- 9:08So that's what I was hoping for if they were going to, I mean
- 9:12again with the recaster Chala thing, just to catch you up to
- 9:15speed and catch everybody up to speed.
- 9:17There was no situation where the hashtag said we need him in
- 9:20Wakanda forever. We just said don't kill him
- 9:23permanently. Like for me, if they wanted to
- 9:26do it story wise, they had the blip because they've done
- 9:29prequels before like a Black Widow.
- 9:32So it was like if you said it in the blip then it also.
- 9:36Also I just felt like if it was in the blip it would explain a
- 9:39lot of the plot points of the movie.
- 9:41It would explain why Sherry has anger issues.
- 9:44It would explain why Wakanda is just getting decimated by these
- 9:48Fish people And like, no offense to anybody like Mesoamerican
- 9:52original or whatever, or Talacan or whatever.
- 9:54I just, I felt like it wasn't even in the scales.
- 9:57When we look at how both countries performed in terms of
- 10:01war, I just felt like Wakanda was severely downgraded for some
- 10:06reason because I was just like, yeah, sorry, go ahead.
- 10:11No, no, no, no, no. Don't let.
- 10:13Me interrupt. Yeah.
- 10:15Yeah. No.
- 10:15I'm just saying for me, I I just, it didn't feel balanced.
- 10:19I didn't feel like because for me personally and I know people
- 10:22have differing opinions on this, but Nate Moore is a villain.
- 10:25He's a villain like he can. He can be a villain with a
- 10:29point. Those exist if you want to take
- 10:32it there, But he's a villain. And I just felt like the movie
- 10:35supported the villain way more than it's supported the heroes.
- 10:39And I, like a lot of people also felt like that for Black Panther
- 10:42one. So they were hoping that they
- 10:43were going to break that trend. But like the other thing was, is
- 10:47that I just felt like killing Tatala, especially the way they
- 10:51did. Not even just killing him in
- 10:53general because like I, I know that actors are supposed to be
- 10:56synonymous with characters, but we also have to remember that
- 10:59that's a that's a nice to have. It's not something that is like
- 11:04set in stone as a law. Because if we look at everybody
- 11:08remembers Christopher Reeves a Superman, everyone remembers
- 11:12Christopher Reeves a Superman. In fact, every Superman that
- 11:15plays, every actor that plays Superman has to go up against
- 11:19Christopher Reeves portrayal. But that doesn't stop them from
- 11:22getting cast. So with the Recaster Charla, I I
- 11:28also feel legacy wise it's better to make.
- 11:30It's better to make Chadwick Boseman the beginning of
- 11:33something rather than the end of something.
- 11:36Like, I feel like anybody that's coming after like would have to
- 11:41obviously pay homage because I'll tell you right now, I am.
- 11:44He was perfect to me. Like in in South Africa, a lot
- 11:48of people were very upset that he was Black Panther because it
- 11:51were like, if it's going to be African, why don't they get an
- 11:53African actor, et cetera, et cetera, which is, which is a
- 11:56logical, you know, I mean, it's fair, but it's Hollywood.
- 12:00Like, it's Hollywood. I'm not expecting Hollywood to
- 12:03like the fact that 2018 was the first time we ever had a Comic
- 12:06Con in Africa, ever. And this is the whole continent.
- 12:11It's the whole continent. Like this is the whole
- 12:13continent. There's never been a Comic Con
- 12:15here. Ever.
- 12:18So like that's what I'm saying is when we talk about the impact
- 12:21of the character, now just getting into that, like I want
- 12:26to say that making him first is way better than making him lost.
- 12:31Because if we look at like James Bond is a great example, right?
- 12:36That's a long, storied legacy of a character.
- 12:38And there was a time where they didn't even say it was different
- 12:41continuities. Like we have to also remember
- 12:44this continuity talk is new. Like we we understand reboots
- 12:48and all of that stuff. But there was a time when people
- 12:51were just getting cast and nobody was thinking about how
- 12:53does this fit into this? This is a very like 2010, 2011,
- 12:572012 phenomenon, which is not that long ago so.
- 13:04I like The thing is I I just feel like and I mean there's
- 13:07many ways to do this there's many way and they definitely
- 13:09should be cost. I'll get into the business
- 13:11aspect of why they should be cost.
- 13:13I'm just getting into like the cultural social aspect right now
- 13:16is that the character did a lot with the very little screen time
- 13:21that he had. Like you have to remember
- 13:23Chadwick Bosemans to Charla only has I think 70 minutes in the
- 13:27whole MCU as a as a whole and. And like, if I'm looking at
- 13:34somebody like Spiderman who came in at the same time as to Chala,
- 13:38he's almost got tripled at screen time.
- 13:41So to bury the character that early.
- 13:44And I get that people's introduction because remember,
- 13:46I'm a comic book fan. Like, you know this about me.
- 13:49A lot of people know this about me.
- 13:50I've been reading comic books forever.
- 13:53So Black Panther never got the push in comics to Chala
- 13:56specifically. He never got the push in
- 13:57comments that other characters got.
- 14:00So when 2018 came around, this was like kind of his time to
- 14:03shine. And Chadwick did a great job,
- 14:05even though he was fighting cancer.
- 14:07Which is another aspect of why I'm saying he should be cast is
- 14:10because Chadwick knew how important the character was,
- 14:14because he was going through hell and he was still doing all
- 14:17of those stunts. Like he was still practicing all
- 14:20of that. He was still getting into the
- 14:22gym and he didn't even make it about him, which is I think
- 14:25another reason why people kind of fell in love with the man.
- 14:28Which is I I again, it's it's a very, very noble pursuit.
- 14:32I, I, I, I totally understand why people are like, you know,
- 14:36infatuated, not infatuated, if that's the word.
- 14:39I'm just saying why they love Chadwick.
- 14:41I I'm not against their love for Chadwick.
- 14:44But when we talk about what he put into the character and also
- 14:49he's got like several like video evidence, quotes where he's
- 14:52talking about like when he was getting sick, there was this guy
- 14:55he was talking to called Roland Martin.
- 14:58And he said to Roland Martin, I want people to see the role.
- 15:02I want people to see the character.
- 15:05What do you do with the role? I don't want them to see me.
- 15:09I mean, you're an actor. You know that when you transform
- 15:11into a character, you don't want people to see, like you don't
- 15:15want Christian Reeve. You don't want them to see
- 15:17Christian Reeve. You want them to see the
- 15:18character like you want them to fall in love with the character,
- 15:21specifically in a sense, from. What I understand when I'm
- 15:25watching it like you're acting reels and all of that stuff.
- 15:27Well, I think to the point what I was making before, I think
- 15:30that that's kind of the issue, is that like, he set the bar so
- 15:35high As far as his portrayal, it's difficult to follow that,
- 15:40not impossible. And as you outlined there, you
- 15:42know they did it with Superman. But to your point, and I think
- 15:45this is very, very important, Christopher Reeve had his
- 15:49stretch of movies, right? That was like a certain
- 15:52portrayal. And then no, like other people
- 15:56played different versions of Superman, different stories.
- 15:59I think there was like the Lois and Thingy TV series in the 90s,
- 16:03and there was obviously the animated ones.
- 16:06And later on in the 2000s, there was the Superman flop that was
- 16:11actually supposed to be a continuation of Christopher
- 16:14Reeve's story, which was interesting.
- 16:17And there was a lot of controversy at the time because
- 16:19people were like, he's not Christopher Reeve.
- 16:22And that's to the point about what we're talking about.
- 16:24It's like very like, Oh no, the actor has become so synonymous
- 16:29with the role that it's, it's made it very difficult.
- 16:31I feel like Henry Cavill really has been the only person to sort
- 16:36of come along and and completely redefine it.
- 16:38And yeah, of course you got, you got Smallville, you got other
- 16:41ones. But like, he really came and
- 16:43made like his version of the character.
- 16:46With I get what you're saying there, but I think with Brandon
- 16:49Ruth, we have to also remember people love Brandon Ruth now.
- 16:52Oh yeah, yeah, like they, they love Brandon Ruth now.
- 16:54And also he was not bad. No, you need to understand.
- 16:59You need to also understand like with recasting, like, because
- 17:01that's another thing that people love to say.
- 17:03It's like if they recast, it's going to be terrible.
- 17:05You're going to hate the character.
- 17:05What? No, you got to understand like a
- 17:07movie is a multiple step process.
- 17:10Like if the script sucks. It doesn't matter how good the
- 17:14performance is, like there's been so many movies where the
- 17:17performances are great but the script is not supporting or
- 17:21backing up those performances like that's how I felt with
- 17:23Superman Returns. I felt like it flopped because
- 17:27they didn't know what they were doing with the character.
- 17:29I mean, even if you look at what Lex Luthor was doing in that
- 17:33movie, it didn't make sense using a kryptonite island that
- 17:38would people were going to rent on and to make business deals.
- 17:42Kryptonite Real estate man. Come on.
- 17:46Who wants to live on a weird, green, irradiated planet that's
- 17:49going to give you cancer like? Like Kryptonite.
- 17:54Like Kryptonite is it's Superman's weakness, but other
- 17:58people can get sick from it. It's not like it's a radiated
- 18:01space metal or whatever or space planet or whatever.
- 18:05So yeah, we got to understand that.
- 18:06Like even if we look at something like Wolverine
- 18:08Origins, like Wolverine Origins, Hugh Jackman was fantastic in
- 18:12that movie and leave Schreiber as Saber tooth, they were really
- 18:16good. But overall, that movies.
- 18:20No, Just no, no. Why was Deadpool teleporting?
- 18:26Why? Why?
- 18:28Like, that's the thing with with with movies, is that like
- 18:32recast? Like everybody says, it's going
- 18:34to be terrible. We have to understand that.
- 18:37It's not going to be the actor alone that's going to tank a
- 18:40franchise. That's just impossible.
- 18:42No. But I think, like, I I think one
- 18:45thing I'd like to push here in this like mini debate we're
- 18:47having is that like at the end of the day, there's a big
- 18:49difference between the continuation of a specific story
- 18:53versus reinvention. So my personal take on this
- 18:58Black Panther deal is that there maybe should be another Black
- 19:03Panther, but a completely different character.
- 19:06A I suppose variant, if you want to call it that, where someone
- 19:10can come into the role and it's not specifically not to Tyler,
- 19:14it's someone different, right. So it's like continuing the
- 19:17legacy of that character but then doing something different.
- 19:21Cuz it doesn't. Matter who you do, it's
- 19:23inevitably they're gonna be compared to Chadwick Boseman's
- 19:26betrayal. And I don't know, I feel like
- 19:28you should always reinvent rather than recreate.
- 19:32But even when you reinvent, people still get compared to the
- 19:36to the original. Like when you say variant, like
- 19:40again with recast the child. We've outlined like a bunch of
- 19:43like personally in the beginning I was team variant.
- 19:46The only reason I'm kind of wanting a direct recast right
- 19:49now and a direct recast off the child specifically because I
- 19:53know people want to say to child of Junior is the next thing and
- 19:55I. We don't agree with that.
- 19:57But when we said variant T'challa like specifically he
- 20:01must be at T'challa from another universe.
- 20:04Like the reason why we have it has to be this specific
- 20:08characters because we you have to remember some Black Panther
- 20:11in publication history. He's two years younger than
- 20:13Spiderman. Spiderman was 1966.
- 20:17Black Panther was created 1968. Yeah, so he's about like. 58 to
- 20:2560 years old right now as a character in like, fictional
- 20:28history and this is the first time he's ever gotten a movie.
- 20:33So, like, Panther fans have been waiting for decades.
- 20:36Like some people are like 60 years old and they've been
- 20:39reading this character ever since they grew up and now
- 20:41they're just told this character that they loved, that they
- 20:44bought the merge for, that they made palatable is just going to
- 20:47go away. And that I feel like that's a
- 20:51little bit unfair because it's just like, no, they never asked
- 20:55up front in the beginning because they never expected it
- 20:57to happen. But once you gave it to them and
- 20:59you take it away, that's that's that's kind of like like let can
- 21:04we can we do something else? And like when Chadwick's brother
- 21:08came out publicly and there's multiple videos of this where he
- 21:12was like they should have recast the character.
- 21:15And his niece also came out publicly to say they should have
- 21:17recast the character because his brother said that Chad was Chad,
- 21:21The character is the character. And basically because the effect
- 21:26that the character had very much from a social standpoint, I'm
- 21:30going to get to the business part.
- 21:31I'm not even in the business part yet, but I'm going to get
- 21:32to the business part. Like the character from a social
- 21:35standpoint. Like I said, 2018 with Comic Con
- 21:38Africa Kiz Azimoto on Disney Plus, like a lot of African
- 21:43creatives and black creatives in general are getting chances they
- 21:46never had simply because of the impact that the first movie had.
- 21:51So to stop that impact there, when you realize how important
- 21:56Katala is as a Cap cuz you have to remember in mainstream comics
- 21:59he's the 1st like pre 1968 there were no black superheroes in
- 22:06Marvel Comics. And I think in in comics proper,
- 22:09I don't think like, yeah, even in DC the first black superhero,
- 22:12I think it's supposed to be Jon Stewart and he came in the 70s.
- 22:16So T'challa predates him by at least five years or so somewhere
- 22:20there. So like that's how important and
- 22:25legacy and story the character is.
- 22:26Which is why when Chadwick was always talking about the
- 22:29character in interviews, he never kind of made it synonymous
- 22:32with him. I think people put that on him,
- 22:35but he always would talk about the character first before him
- 22:38because that's how story the character was.
- 22:41So when we talk recast in it and like again, comparison, and I
- 22:45think personally, comparison is great because we do it all the
- 22:48time, we do it with everything. And I don't think necessarily
- 22:52it's the thief of joy. You just need to understand why
- 22:55you're making the comparisons that you're making because
- 22:57everybody's going to have their different favorites.
- 22:59Like, No Way Home was a perfect example of this.
- 23:02Like, bunch of people loved Toby, a bunch of people loved
- 23:06Andrew, which I remember when people hated those movies.
- 23:09Like, I'm. I'm very much surprised that now
- 23:12Andrew Garfield is so beloved as Spider Man.
- 23:15I don't. Understand that hate.
- 23:16You know, I went back and watched the recent Man, these
- 23:19are good movies. I don't know.
- 23:21The second one was convoluted. The first one, the first one I
- 23:25the first one I liked a lot. But the second one I think was
- 23:27convoluted, but he was fantastic in it.
- 23:30I loved his performance in it and I know, like people want
- 23:33like nerdy Peter Parker or whatever, but he was nerdy
- 23:36enough for me one and like Peter Parker.
- 23:38Like people I think a lot of time misunderstand when Peter
- 23:42Parker was nerdy. Like if you go and read those
- 23:45Stanley comics from the 60s, he was nerdy.
- 23:47But it wasn't to the point where he was not like like getting any
- 23:51girls or anything. In fact, he was scoring a lot,
- 23:55especially for somebody that was not like that was not good with
- 23:59women. He was scoring quite a bit.
- 24:02So I yeah, but I'm saying like that's that's really cool.
- 24:06That's cool that now you have Tom Holland and you have a
- 24:08different type of Spiderman on screen and they were all
- 24:11together on screen. And like people said that I love
- 24:14this guy more or I love this more or I love that more.
- 24:17I mean, we do it with cartoons. There's so many versions of
- 24:20Spiderman, so somebody like the 90s Spiderman cartoon, but other
- 24:23people like the spectacular Spiderman cartoon and all of
- 24:26that stuff. So comparison I don't think is a
- 24:30bad thing. I've never seen it actually be a
- 24:32bad thing. I've just seen people bring
- 24:34different things to the role. Again, going back to James Bond,
- 24:38like Daniel Craig and why am I forgetting his name now?
- 24:41Goldeneye. He was in Black Adam.
- 24:46He was in Black Adam. He was in Black Adam.
- 24:48Not, not, not Connery. He was.
- 24:50He played Doctor Faith Pierce Brosnan.
- 24:52There we go. Pierce Brosnan.
- 24:54Like if you look at the way they played Bond, it was like very
- 24:57different from each other. But you didn't like you didn't.
- 25:00You did not See Bond. You get what I'm saying, like
- 25:04they look different and they look different, but I still felt
- 25:07like they were Bond in my opinion.
- 25:09The key, the key thing with that franchise though, is that it's
- 25:12it's a continual reboot. Every time they go with a new
- 25:15actor, it's like, right, Change everything, everyone.
- 25:19Sometimes they might carry over actors, you know, into, you
- 25:24know, I saw some very, very significant carryover.
- 25:27There were some carryovers. I'm not.
- 25:28I'm not. I'm not really against your
- 25:31whole reinvention thing. I totally understand that.
- 25:34But I'm just saying within the MCU as well, they have done like
- 25:38direct recasts also. Oh yeah, and they did it like.
- 25:41That's what's his name, Bore Machine.
- 25:44Yeah, Rody. Yeah, Rody, Rody and Banner.
- 25:47I mean, like Banner also got recast after Incredible Hulk.
- 25:51So, and again, I do understand the situation where people are,
- 25:57you know, specifically the cost and crew.
- 25:59Because like people on Twitter, I feel like for me, there's
- 26:03there's a lot of parasocial relationships that are kind of
- 26:05dangerous. Like, I feel like people get way
- 26:08too attached to people that they really don't know.
- 26:11Like when, like when I'm, you know, pro recaster Charla,
- 26:15people are literally saying you want to erase Chadwick's legacy.
- 26:19And I'm like, what? Why anything is a?
- 26:22Continuation, isn't it? I mean, what I'm getting from
- 26:25what you're saying is I don't want this character to die.
- 26:29I want the character to live on. That's the whole point of what
- 26:32we're talking about is like continue to make the fact that
- 26:36and the fact that Chadwick went through cancer to give us that
- 26:40movie. Like he could have just said I'm
- 26:42not doing this, but he went through cancer to give us those
- 26:46movies. Like he went through cancer and
- 26:49he was still jumping off of buildings and still spin kicking
- 26:52and all of that stuff. And like if you know cancer,
- 26:55your body is against you. Like, I mean he's a real
- 27:00superhero if you think about it. But like, why did he do that
- 27:03specifically for T'challa? Because like he, like he said, I
- 27:08want this character to be important.
- 27:09Like even in the press conferences, they were talking
- 27:12about this character being like James Bond in that he's going to
- 27:16be going on in perpetuity. But if you put him in the ground
- 27:19and they're going to be, and if they put him in the ground and
- 27:22wait 10 years and then reboot, I think interest is going to
- 27:25dwindle because we're not in the 60s anymore.
- 27:28We're not in the 1960s. There's so much content coming
- 27:31out right now, and we're in an age where I can make a comic
- 27:36book on my phone. I could make an animation on my
- 27:38phone. You know some people can make
- 27:40whole movies on their phones and then there's AI and all of that
- 27:44stuff. So he could be lost in the
- 27:48shuffle and that would be very heartbreaking for this
- 27:51monumental character that broke. Barry is the same way Spiderman
- 27:55and Batman did, cuz Batman was the first non powered superhero,
- 27:59Spiderman was the first teenage superhero.
- 28:02Tatala is the first black superhero in mainstream comics.
- 28:06So just to get rid of that, not, I don't think that's wise
- 28:11because unfortunately one, he doesn't have a lot of media.
- 28:14He has one cartoon and a couple cartoon appearances. 2 movies
- 28:21affect everything. Like there's a video game coming
- 28:24out right now and the rumor is, which is insane to me, but this
- 28:29is the rumor and like people say it's a rumor.
- 28:31It's not confirmed, but it's never been a rumor for any other
- 28:34video game. Is that in the Black Panther
- 28:36solo video game? It opens with the child dying
- 28:39and you create a character that takes up the mantle of Black
- 28:43Panther. Now again, it's a rumor, but
- 28:47what? When has there ever been a rumor
- 28:50for any other video game ever? When have you ever heard of
- 28:53Batman game announced? And you're not Bruce Wade?
- 28:56Where have you ever heard of Spiderman game announced?
- 28:58And you're not Peter Parker? I've never seen it so.
- 29:03Miles Morales, yeah. But I mean, OK, even with Miles
- 29:07Morales, at least they said, at least they publicly said you are
- 29:10Miles Morales. Yeah.
- 29:13And yeah. No, no, no.
- 29:15I mean, and Parker shows up in the game, too.
- 29:17He trains you through the game. So yeah, yeah.
- 29:20I'm just saying for me, this is like the first time he's ever
- 29:22gotten a video game. And I'm like, that's the rumor.
- 29:25Like, that's no, no. So I'm like, I'm just saying,
- 29:29unfortunately, the MCU has an effect on a lot of things, even
- 29:33in the comic books right now. He's not king anymore.
- 29:37He's been exiled and they teamed up with Namor.
- 29:41And it's just like, I see what you're trying to do with this
- 29:43MCU synergy. I mean, and like, if you look at
- 29:46like cases, I don't know if you ever saw this, but like Kamala
- 29:49Khan now she's a mutant in the comic books and they got Iman
- 29:54Vilani that her actress writing on the writing staff and
- 29:58everything. And it's just like, and Iman
- 29:59Vilani is cool because she's like a huge fan of the
- 30:02character, whatever, which is nice to see because sometimes
- 30:04these writers are not fans of the characters that they're
- 30:07writing. And you're just like, why are
- 30:08you writing it then? But like, yeah, like what I'm
- 30:12saying, the MCU synergy, it's it's like they keep thinking
- 30:16it's a big thing, so it's bound to affect other things.
- 30:19Which is why recast the child in a sense is very important
- 30:22because it's not going to just stop at the movies.
- 30:25One, it shouldn't stop at the movies because I feel like other
- 30:27actors. And then Chadwick has said this
- 30:29in interviews that he's like, Hollywood does this thing where
- 30:32it's like there can only be one like they were calling him the
- 30:35next Denzel, they were calling him the next, like Samuel
- 30:39Jackson or whatever. And like not to completely make
- 30:43this a race thing. But I've never heard that go the
- 30:45other way. I've never looked at who's an up
- 30:49and coming actor now. Yeah, OK let's go with Tom
- 30:51Holland. I've never looked at Tom Holland
- 30:53and heard anybody say, well, he's the next George Clooney or
- 30:56I've never looked at like, what's a, what's another
- 30:59example, Even if we go with Chris Pratt, I've never heard
- 31:03anybody look at Chris Pratt and say he's the next Bruce Willis
- 31:06or whatever. Like, they just get to be
- 31:08actors. So with like this role
- 31:11specifically, that could change another black actor's life
- 31:15completely. Like for them to play T'challa,
- 31:17they're like, what would happen to their career is huge and
- 31:22massive. And that's something that
- 31:24Chadwick was in in in his early days when people didn't know
- 31:28him, that was something that he was fighting for because like in
- 31:31bold and the beautiful, he was like a thug or whatever, and he
- 31:35didn't like it when he played a thug.
- 31:37And then the other time he had notes for the producer where he
- 31:41was talking about a single like it was a, it was a black
- 31:44stereotype, black American stereotype specifically, I
- 31:47guess, that he did not like. And he ended up getting recast.
- 31:51And ironically, the person who took his role was Michael B
- 31:55Jordan, and he never, and he never held that against Michael
- 31:59B Jordan, which was interesting. But like you see, he was always
- 32:03pushing the envelope in that aspect.
- 32:05It was like with every role that he played, he was always playing
- 32:09something, somebody historical that he felt was bigger than
- 32:12him. And I mean, again, I still think
- 32:15it's crazy to put Chadwick Boseman's value into Chala
- 32:18alone. I just think that reduces his
- 32:21whole career to one role and that's not, that's not fair to
- 32:25him. Like that's not fair to him
- 32:27because he was fantastic as James Brown.
- 32:30He was fantastic as Jackie Robinson in 42, like even if you
- 32:34go to 21 bridges, he put in a very strong performance over
- 32:38there. And if you look at the five
- 32:39bloods he like he was, he was a very powerful performer in there
- 32:44as well. Like Chadwick was really good at
- 32:46his craft. I think he was one of the best
- 32:48modern actors of our time. So I have to reduce him to one
- 32:53role I think is unfair. So with with all of that being
- 32:58said, again, I just feel like putting I'll get to the business
- 33:02aspect, but putting the character in the ground, it just
- 33:05it diminishes his impact. And that's not good going
- 33:09forward because there's going to be so many avenues and
- 33:11opportunities lost. And also potentially because
- 33:16people forget that they have short attention spans.
- 33:18They do they there's a chance they might even forget that Chad
- 33:23may play T'challa because T'challa is nowhere to be seen.
- 33:26Like that's a thing that can very much happen.
- 33:30Like if you look at characters that have not gotten recast,
- 33:32like I don't know if you've ever heard of this, the $1,000,000
- 33:35Man. I think it's called the
- 33:36$1,000,000 Man. Something like that.
- 33:39Not Ted De Biasi from WWE. That's what my mind goes to as
- 33:43arrested. But apparently there was a there
- 33:46was an action hero called the $1,000,000 man or something like
- 33:48that. And nobody knows who that actor
- 33:51is unless you're like 50 or something, apparently.
- 33:54And because he was never recast, they never had another, like
- 33:58there was never nothing to go back to.
- 34:00Like the only reason I know Adam West is because of Christian
- 34:05Bale. Like when Christian Bale was
- 34:07Batman, I ended up going into the history of Batman and then I
- 34:11found out about. Then I found out about George
- 34:14Clooney and why the franchise went away for a while.
- 34:17Then I found out about Val Kilmer.
- 34:19Then I found out about Michael Keaton and then I found out
- 34:22about Adam West. And The thing is, that was,
- 34:25that's the thing with recasting and keeping the IP fresh is that
- 34:29you get to pull those fun things where you get to see it like a
- 34:32sharks, like a shark can spray, where Batman is spraying a shark
- 34:35or whatever. I mean, they even had references
- 34:38to it in the Arkham, in the Arkham games where you punch a
- 34:41shark or whatever. So like recasting in a sense
- 34:46keeping that legacy alive, it also keeps these people alive
- 34:50here in terms of like pop culture relevance.
- 34:54And it also always makes sure that you know, these guys were
- 34:57the first people to push the envelope.
- 34:59That's why I feel like it's very important to recast to Tyler
- 35:04specifically. Now we get to the business
- 35:07aspect. Finally, sorry, I just sorry for
- 35:12the. I just, I just put it as funny
- 35:15cuz whenever I do a podcast I I say the same thing.
- 35:18I'll be like I'll get back to it.
- 35:20And I always think, did I get back to it?
- 35:21I didn't forget cuz there's nothing more annoying than that.
- 35:25So let's finally talk about the business aspect of this.
- 35:27From the business aspect, the MCU does not have any solid
- 35:32tether right now. I'm looking at the the lineup.
- 35:37Who's the Iron Man? Who's the Captain America?
- 35:40Oh dude, can I climb in for a second?
- 35:41It this is like the weakest lineup ever.
- 35:44We've gone from like, the New York Yankees to like, I don't
- 35:48know who's who's bad, who's bad team, like the worst team in the
- 35:51league. Like, I hate to be.
- 35:53I hate to say that, but I mean, don't get me wrong, there's some
- 35:56interesting stories being told there.
- 35:58But at the same time, if we were to just suddenly do an Avengers
- 36:02movie, just for argument's sake, this team of people, I don't buy
- 36:05it. They're going to save the
- 36:06universe. Come on, you know now.
- 36:09And you got to look at it, right?
- 36:10If you look at this lineup, technically, they're supposed to
- 36:13be stronger than the OG Avengers.
- 36:16Technically, like, if you look at it, you've got Miss Marvel.
- 36:20She can do more than Hawkeye. You got like, Captain, You got
- 36:25Captain Marvel. No, I'm saying I'm gonna get to
- 36:28my point. I'm gonna get to my point.
- 36:29Is that, like I'm saying, when we look at these characters,
- 36:32right, First off, people need to understand.
- 36:34Power doesn't make a character. No one really cares how strong a
- 36:38character is. Not really, if you think about
- 36:41not. Seeing the arguments about she,
- 36:43Hulk and Hulk. Come on, man.
- 36:45Yeah, yeah. I'm saying the reason why they
- 36:47say they care about that is because they feel like the way
- 36:50she, Hulk got her powers versus the way Bruce got his powers, he
- 36:54had to go through trauma and suffering.
- 36:56So for her to just get an instant power up, it feels
- 36:58cheap. But that's because of the
- 37:00character and the way they wrote the story.
- 37:02You got to understand like I'm a story writer as well, right?
- 37:06I'm purposely making my power, my characters.
- 37:09Not so overpowered because it serves the story, but if the
- 37:13story is bad and your characters are powerful, great.
- 37:17Example, Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel was in her movie,
- 37:21she was soloing an entire fleet and people were like she's OP,
- 37:25but they hated it. Why?
- 37:27Because the way they did the character throughout the movie.
- 37:29And this is not Brie Larson's fault.
- 37:31I maintain that I think Brie Larson is.
- 37:35She's a good actress in my opinion.
- 37:37I know people fight me on that all the time.
- 37:39But those writers screwed her over.
- 37:42Like, if you look at that movie, those writers didn't give her
- 37:45any material to work with, really, because it was a whole
- 37:48thing about women being emotionless or being too having
- 37:51too much emotion. And I'll tell you right now, I
- 37:54would have rather she been emotional than a freaking robot
- 37:58through the entire movie because, like, she barely has
- 38:00any reactions. She barely like when she
- 38:03interacts like you feel nothing there.
- 38:05And like they kept, I feel like they kept writing it to say,
- 38:08Brie Larson, suppress your emotion.
- 38:10I don't know if I fully agree with that man.
- 38:12There were some interactions when she's with like family and
- 38:14stuff where you see more of the Carol Denver's character in some
- 38:19of it, but like some of it, but like.
- 38:21I will say this I agree with I agree with you on this.
- 38:24When she's around people she's close with like Nick Fury or
- 38:29family like her, the personality comes out.
- 38:32But whenever she's like like okay, this is bad.
- 38:35But like I saw Avengers before I saw Captain Marvel, so my first
- 38:40introduction to this character is who is this, why, and why she
- 38:44got no? Like, she's just cold and just
- 38:47calculated the whole time. And then I went back and I
- 38:50watched Captain Marvel and I saw more of her personality and I
- 38:52was like, oh, so this is deliberate.
- 38:54She's deliberately, like, suppressing this.
- 38:58Which is strange, yeah. But I don't feel like that's a
- 39:00good, like. I don't feel like that's a good
- 39:02character model to base it off of, like because remember, she's
- 39:05got to be likable. Like she's got to, you know,
- 39:08she's she's got to be like the she's got to be the new Captain
- 39:11America or the new, like, you know, she's she's got to take
- 39:14that spot. So we got to know about her.
- 39:17So if they keep suppressing emotions and information and
- 39:19just giving us flashbacks that we don't care about, that's not
- 39:22going to serve the character. Like, again, Brie Larson.
- 39:27In the beginning of the film, Captain Marvel, I had a lot of
- 39:29fun. I was like, I'm liking this.
- 39:32I like the like. There's one moment that I always
- 39:34remember that was always fun for me is when the scrolls are,
- 39:37like, snarling at her and then she like, snarls back at them
- 39:39and then she like, kicks there. I thought that was fun.
- 39:42I really liked that. But as you continue with the
- 39:44movie, they just keep beating this out of the character to the
- 39:47point where she becomes more of a mouthpiece than an actual
- 39:51character. And that's for me.
- 39:55Like as a person who's very well versed on social issues and all
- 39:59of that stuff, you need to have characters first.
- 40:02Like, you have to have characters first.
- 40:04Like, your message is very important, but you have to have
- 40:07characters first. If you do not have a character
- 40:09first, people are not going to care about your message.
- 40:11It doesn't matter what you want to throw at the screen.
- 40:15That's good story, yeah. With her.
- 40:18Yeah, with her, I just felt like in Captain Marvel, they didn't
- 40:21put enough stock into, like they didn't let her act.
- 40:25I really don't feel like they let her act.
- 40:27I really feel like every time she got a chance to act, she was
- 40:30great, but then they didn't lean into that.
- 40:33And then also like with the story of the Scrolls, I didn't
- 40:37mind that, but I was just like, OK, you don't have to deviate
- 40:40this much from the source material.
- 40:42Because I feel like that's another problem with the MCU is
- 40:44that nowadays they feel more embarrassed by the source
- 40:47material. Which is strange because in the
- 40:51in phase one through 3, even though they weren't one to ones,
- 40:55they still felt like they honored the source material just
- 40:57a little bit more. Like if you look at The Avengers
- 41:00one, that basic premise is the source material, how it unfolds
- 41:05and the configuration is very different.
- 41:08But basically it was Loki bringing all of The Avengers
- 41:12together to fight him. That's basically how it happened
- 41:16in the comic. So when we get, and also just a
- 41:20side note, Captain Marvel in recent comics, she's been
- 41:24written way better than before, so I'm glad that they're sorting
- 41:28that out. I like that character.
- 41:31Yeah, like, I feel like in the marvels we might actually
- 41:34finally get to see more of our personality.
- 41:36I feel like that's where we're headed.
- 41:37I mean, I will say this. I'm desperate for a Captain
- 41:40Marvel Two movie to just find out what the hell she's doing in
- 41:44the universe. It's like, yeah, they keep
- 41:47flirting with it and and saying like, oh she's she's off on, out
- 41:51of world. She's doing this, she's doing
- 41:52that. It's like show us already, show
- 41:54us what she's doing. Yes, I want to see what she's
- 41:55doing. Yeah, no, but that's what I'm
- 41:58saying is like, I just like, that's what I'm saying with they
- 42:01didn't put enough stock into the character.
- 42:03Like as much as the actress can be good, but she's and also the
- 42:07controversies are not helping. But they didn't put enough stock
- 42:10into the character. Now let's get to Shang Chi.
- 42:13Shang Chi was good. But does he really feel like
- 42:18he's a replacement for Iron Man or for Captain America?
- 42:23I I don't think so. Like, I feel like it's it's own
- 42:26entity entirely. Like I I was intrigued by the
- 42:29story, but I know what you mean. Like, I feel like if he's
- 42:31invited to The Avengers party, it's like great.
- 42:34But I feel like it's more interesting to just explore his
- 42:36story on its own. To be honest, I feel that is
- 42:39more interesting. Yeah, like I'm I'm saying like
- 42:41he feels more of a team player, but he doesn't feel like a team
- 42:44leader to me. Like, he doesn't feel like he's
- 42:46supposed to take it forward. And now if we go to something
- 42:51like Falcon or new Captain America, I just feel like for
- 42:55one Falcon in The Winter Soldier, even though it was, it
- 42:58was an alright show. It felt redundant.
- 43:01Like, why did we go through this whole arc?
- 43:04He already got the shield. Why are we seeing this again?
- 43:08Okay, I'm going to play devil's advocate here.
- 43:10I feel like you could make the argument the Captain America
- 43:15just giving him the shield is not really the same as like
- 43:19earning it and becoming Captain America.
- 43:21Like, I honestly felt after watching that series, I really
- 43:24felt like he earned it. Because what they did is they
- 43:26took it away from him in a really major way and he had to
- 43:30like fight too, for Nail to get to the point where it's like,
- 43:34yeah, no, you are Captain America.
- 43:35And I don't know, by the end I felt like, yeah, no, he is
- 43:37Captain America. It felt, it really felt that
- 43:40way. And I know there's plenty of
- 43:41people that disagree with me on that, but to me, that's how I.
- 43:44Understand, I understand what you're saying, but I feel like
- 43:46the reason he gave him the shield in the 1st place was
- 43:49because he had already put in the legwork to earn it.
- 43:52Like if we had opened with Captain America Four and it was
- 43:55Falcon already. I don't think anybody would be
- 43:58like, how the hell did that happen?
- 44:00So, So what you're saying is that throughout The Avengers
- 44:03movies he's he's earned his stripes really that way?
- 44:05Yes, yeah. OK.
- 44:07I mean he he basically went on the run for with Steve Rogers
- 44:11just because he was Steve Rogers friend.
- 44:15He basically, he basically was hunted by the government.
- 44:18Like, you better give him something.
- 44:19OK, OK, let's, let's, let's, let's jump on that as well.
- 44:22So yeah, he helped Steve Rogers. He helped Captain America.
- 44:27But I feel like the whole point with Falcon in The Winter
- 44:30Soldier is showing like independently he doesn't feel
- 44:34like he's really earned it necessarily.
- 44:36Like that's the whole point of the story, isn't it?
- 44:38He himself does not consider himself to be Captain America.
- 44:43And then throughout the course. Of that story he it's like a
- 44:46personal struggle and I don't know, I dug that because it's
- 44:49like, firstly it's a relatable story and secondly, by the end
- 44:53of it, it's become his. It's no longer something that's
- 44:56been passed down by his, his long departed friend.
- 44:59Now it's this is mine. I'm gonna own this, I am.
- 45:04Yeah, I get that. But I mean, for me personally, I
- 45:06just feel differently because I liked him as Falcon better than
- 45:09Captain America personally. But like, anyway, what I'm what
- 45:12I'm saying is, is that like a lot of people felt like it was a
- 45:15circle. And also we haven't seen like
- 45:18Sam Lee the team. Like, you know, we haven't seen
- 45:21him like display like leadership qualities for a very long time.
- 45:25So I mean he's the best candidate at this point.
- 45:27He like, just objectively speaking, he's the best
- 45:30candidate, but he's not the same draw as like A and then also
- 45:34Thor. They've just taken for off the
- 45:36deep end. So I I don't know what they're
- 45:39what they're doing. Oh, that movie was which?
- 45:41Is, which is so frustrating. But I'm saying, you know what's,
- 45:44you know, what's you know, it's frustrating, you know, it's
- 45:46frustrating though. Like, I mean, even if we go to
- 45:48Ragnarok, like, I wasn't a huge fan of Ragnarok.
- 45:50I like Ragnarok. But like I also had problems
- 45:53with it because I was like this is the end of Asgard.
- 45:56Why are we joking right now? Hella is slaughtering millions
- 46:01like this is actually genocidal. Why are we?
- 46:05Why are we laughing? Like when there's a way to find
- 46:09the games until Avengers Infinity War really isn't.
- 46:12It yes. And I'm just like Avengers.
- 46:14Infinity War is what Ragnarok should have been when they
- 46:18announced Thor Ragnarok. Like Ragnarok is supposed to be
- 46:22the end of Asgard. It's supposed to be like the
- 46:24monumental battle where all of the gods die.
- 46:28And like, that's the end of that universe.
- 46:31So to to just say that, like, haha, we're laughing haha, we're
- 46:37throwing Loki into people, haha. It's just like, guys, you can't
- 46:41be like don't use the term Ragnarok then, because even in
- 46:44the comic books like Thor had to kill like the makers of creation
- 46:48and reboot his entire universe in order to solve that issue.
- 46:53So I'm just like, OK, but anyway.
- 46:56Like getting into love and Thunder.
- 46:59For a second it was just like Chris Hemsworth is a good actor.
- 47:04Like he is. Like if you ever wanted proof
- 47:09that conversation with the talking raccoon had more people
- 47:13emotional, then when then, then, then when Odin decided he was
- 47:19just leaving. Like when Odin dies in Ragnarok,
- 47:23I found way more emotion seeing Thor talk to Rocket Raccoon than
- 47:28when Thor had to mourn his father like that.
- 47:32That's something weird to me. So I'm just like, Chris Hemworth
- 47:35is a good yes. We know he's funny, we
- 47:38understand he's funny. It's great that he's funny, but
- 47:40he can do other stuff as well. Like, I know people don't like
- 47:44this movie so much, but like Thor too.
- 47:49I thought he was excellent in Thor two.
- 47:51I thought like Chris Hemsworth really did a lot with Thor's
- 47:55character in Thor too. Like that.
- 47:57That whole exchange between him and Tom Hiddleston, Loki on the
- 48:01on the boat when Jane is dying. I felt like that was a great
- 48:05exchange between those two characters and I was just like
- 48:08you needed to push more of that, like to see more of.
- 48:11Not so funny. If or would have been great.
- 48:15I just think like they they didn't stick to their guts
- 48:18because there's because the other thing with MCU, and I
- 48:20guess it's also frustrating for comic book fans specifically, is
- 48:23that MCU people who have never read the comic books, they come
- 48:27in with preconceived notions and it feels like they cater to that
- 48:30audience a lot more. And it's just like, I feel like
- 48:33you would have gotten a lot more richer story if you kind of
- 48:37honored the source material, because that's what.
- 48:39Like Captain America and Iron Man are very close to their
- 48:43comic book counterparts. Like if you flip between a page
- 48:47of Captain America and you flip between a page of like an Iron
- 48:49Man comic, you get to see that they are very similar to their
- 48:54comic book counterparts. Hulk at his best was very
- 48:58similar to his comic book counterpart.
- 49:01Like like when he's Hulk Smash and all of that stuff and he's
- 49:05like having that, you know, those backstories and and all of
- 49:08that issues and emotional stuff. That was when he was at his
- 49:12best. Now he's doing yoga.
- 49:16So it's just like, I don't understand why you want to
- 49:19deviate so much. Like, I get it.
- 49:21It's not a 1:00 to 1:00. I've been told so many times,
- 49:24it's not a one to one. Fine, fine, fine.
- 49:27But like, it's an adaptation. And with an adaptation, you
- 49:31should still have the main elements of the stuff you're
- 49:34adapting. I mean if you take out
- 49:36Dumbledore like this, like Richard Harris, Richard Harris,
- 49:39when he passed they did a memorial on set, but they recast
- 49:43for the third for the third movie of Harry Potter because
- 49:46they needed Dumbledore because he did not die until like Harry
- 49:50Potter 6 because that was when he died canonically in the in
- 49:55the books. So I just think like to, I just
- 49:58think like when it comes to source material and adaptations,
- 50:02nobody's asking for one to one like some people are because you
- 50:06know, moving screens and sound effects and everything, it
- 50:09enhances what you read. But I feel like with the MCU
- 50:14specifically, they've been moving further and further away
- 50:17from the source material and it's not helping the product,
- 50:20it's not helping the franchise. So when we also look at
- 50:24something like connective tissue, because I know people
- 50:26like to say phase four is like phase one for me.
- 50:30I'm like phase one, they all were connected through SHIELD,
- 50:33like SHIELD was there through all of phase one.
- 50:37In phase four there's not really that much connective tissue and
- 50:41T'challa could have been the one to fix that problem because
- 50:46another thing as well I I was so I saw a clip of you know that
- 50:51that scene in an end game where you know RDJ's like I am Iron
- 50:56Man and clicks his fingers and I remembered like that.
- 51:00I think it was the end of Iron Man one with the the end of
- 51:04credit scene. It was him being rejected from
- 51:08The Avengers. Or maybe this beginning of Iron
- 51:10Man 2, but around that time, no. No, no, that's the beginning of.
- 51:13Yeah, that's the beginning of Iron Man Two year.
- 51:14Yeah, he's rejected from The Avengers and I just find it
- 51:18ironic that the one who's rejected and not included is
- 51:22then becomes the most important. I just thought that was an
- 51:25interesting dynamic. I like that flip on his head.
- 51:30That was that was very. I like that flip like yeah,
- 51:33again, I'm not into like fatalism like that.
- 51:36Rather he retired, but OK, whatever.
- 51:38But no, I thought. I thought that was a good story.
- 51:40Like, I have to say, I I personally don't want to see him
- 51:44come back. I thought that that was the
- 51:45perfect story. Oh, it's it's it's happening.
- 51:49He, like an Ironman, is coming because they no they need.
- 51:53To figure something out. I don't know if it's not going
- 51:56to be RDJ, but like, even if it's not, that might even be
- 51:59worse because now they're going to be like, oh, he's not RDJ.
- 52:02Oh, he's not RDJ. Or he'll do it differently.
- 52:05Like I I thought the idea of having Tom Cruise do it,
- 52:07Brilliant. But I want it to.
- 52:10If it's going to be Tom Cruise, I want it to be Captain
- 52:13Egotistical, like just absolutely insufferable.
- 52:17I just ramp it up a gear because with RDJ we we fell in love with
- 52:21the character. Like, you know, in the beginning
- 52:24he was very egotistical. That's part of his charm and it
- 52:26was interesting, but it was a whole part of the whole story
- 52:28arc. He he becomes humbled, he
- 52:30becomes a good guy over time. But if you just brought in a
- 52:35character who's just absolutely the opposite of that, and you
- 52:38can't stand him, who knows where he can go with that, you know?
- 52:42Yeah, no. But I'm just saying like when
- 52:43when you talk like that's the thing with quote UN quote
- 52:46recasting in both senses, in the sense is that you do want to see
- 52:50other actors, you know, their take on certain things as well.
- 52:53So my arm is getting tired. I need to myself back in focus.
- 52:59But like the thing that I'm trying to say here is that
- 53:02especially just business wise, if we look at it, Tatala is the
- 53:05best connective tissue for like everyone in the MCU right now.
- 53:09He's met most of the major Avengers.
- 53:12Like he can connect one Avenger to another in a sense.
- 53:15Like Shang Qi has never met Shuri, right?
- 53:21But he's met Banner. Banner has met T'challa.
- 53:24So when T'challa and Banner see each other and Shang Qi and
- 53:28Banner brings like Shang Qi to The Avengers meeting or
- 53:30whatever. Like Tutala is that instant
- 53:33connective tissue that'll make people be like, oh great, that's
- 53:37oh, because he know. Oh, oh oh, and so on and so
- 53:41forth. Like, what?
- 53:43What's the number like? Yeah, yeah, basically.
- 53:46And also, like, if you're looking for the rich guy, Tutala
- 53:50is like the rich guy who could house everybody at an HQ because
- 53:53he's the one with the most money.
- 53:55So, like, I think that makes a good question actually, because
- 53:57there's no base anymore. Like The Avengers home is gone,
- 54:02isn't it? I think it's that they recreated
- 54:05it today to the best of my knowledge.
- 54:06And The thing is, it would also feed it into Black Panther one,
- 54:09because the child started an outreach program so they could
- 54:13have built off of that and started making like an Avengers
- 54:16HQ where he's leading these people and all of that stuff.
- 54:19And also in the comic books, it's a big point of contention
- 54:23for him emotionally because his countrymen do not like the fact
- 54:26that he works with The Avengers, his countrymen.
- 54:29And get pissed every time he leaves.
- 54:30Yeah, they don't like outsiders, do they?
- 54:32That's the whole thing. It's like.
- 54:34Yeah, not not even just outsiders, but like in the comic
- 54:37book specifically, they don't like that he's splitting his
- 54:39time because they feel like he's supposed to be king of their
- 54:41realm. He's not supposed to be helping
- 54:43out, like he's not supposed to be helping those people.
- 54:45And T'challa's argument and counter argument is that if
- 54:49Galactus lands tomorrow, what are we gonna do?
- 54:55Just hearing you say the name is exciting, man.
- 54:59It's not coming anytime soon. That'll be like phase five or
- 55:02something. But.
- 55:04So exciting, but that's what I'm saying.
- 55:08And also fun fact, in the comic books there's a team called The
- 55:11Ultimates. I don't know if you've ever read
- 55:13this, but basically the lineup. The lineup is Captain Marvel,
- 55:17T'challa, Black Panther Blue Adam, America Chavez and Photon
- 55:26Monica Rambo. And basically they go around
- 55:29like solving intergalactic crises, where one of the stories
- 55:34is they fix Galactus's problem of hunger.
- 55:38And it's like a very interesting story of how that turns around.
- 55:41And then also now the forces of the universe kind of get upset
- 55:46at them because they've changed like the natural order.
- 55:49So it's like a big personal fight for Galactus as well As
- 55:52for the Ultimates, so. Like stuff like that is why I'm
- 55:57like you can't just put this character in the ground now.
- 55:59Like you can't, you can't be done with the child now.
- 56:02He still has so much story to tell like he's got 10 plus years
- 56:06of story as well. I want the same treatment as RDJ
- 56:10got and it helps make business sense because with Doom if you
- 56:15need a way to establish to end the pistol because remember when
- 56:18people were big on the pistol there was big.
- 56:20The Pistol Fever Pistol is coming.
- 56:23Tatalla has fought Mephisto in the comic books to the point
- 56:26where he actually outsmarted the demon with the help of his
- 56:30goddess boss. So that gets into like the
- 56:32mystical aspect of the MCU that's missing.
- 56:37So like he's he's just a character that has a lot of
- 56:40connections and slots in perfectly and can like and can
- 56:43fix a lot of issues that the MCU is having right now.
- 56:47So to get rid of the character completely.
- 56:50Again, not in Wakanda forever. But like in Black Panther Three,
- 56:54they should reestablish that he comes back.
- 56:56And if you've got multiple ways to do it.
- 56:58So I just feel like to take the franchise and everything forward
- 57:03to Chala, it was the best next candidate after like Captain
- 57:08America at Steve Rogers and Iron Man, Tony Stark.
- 57:12Like because you see that guy and you want us.
- 57:15You want like people saw that guy for 5 minutes in the Civil
- 57:18War trailer. Oh, not 5 minutes.
- 57:20That's a long time, like 30 seconds in the Civil War.
- 57:22The trailer and they were instantly hooked onto the
- 57:25character instantly, like to the point where he almost outshined
- 57:30Spiderman in that movie because unlike Spiderman, he had a whole
- 57:34arc. Spiderman was a cameo.
- 57:37He showed up for a couple, like for a couple scenes, but
- 57:40T'challa had a whole story arc. So again, I don't think it's a
- 57:44wise thing to put this character in the ground, especially when
- 57:47family members of Chadwick Boseman have come out and have
- 57:50been like we should recast. I just feel like it's like, I
- 57:54feel like as a fan, that would be insulting to them to to say
- 57:58I'm more hurt about Chadwick Boseman than they are.
- 58:03I gotta ask, what did you think about Black Panther?
- 58:08What kind of forever Like the movie, just overall how they
- 58:11handled things, the story? I OK like, I just feel like it's
- 58:15a huge pothole that he dies to a random disease.
- 58:18I just. I agree with that.
- 58:20That pissed me off. Yeah.
- 58:22I just. I just like because sure, he's
- 58:27trying to make a sure he's trying to make a synthetic herb.
- 58:30He already has the original 1 already, so why would he need a
- 58:34double herb? I felt like it's it's a bit like
- 58:37when people in in Star Wars when people said that like Han Solo
- 58:40died a bit of a fool's death. Like I felt the same way I was.
- 58:44Like I was expecting what I thought they.
- 58:46Would do. Was was him and him.
- 58:49I thought they would have him in the suit, as in CGI, right?
- 58:54Dies in some sort of explosion. You you don't see him die, but
- 58:59it's like implied something like that.
- 59:02And then we cut to the aftermath and everyone dealing with it.
- 59:06I was very surprised with this choice.
- 59:09I thought that was not very befitting of the character.
- 59:13I don't know but. Yeah, but like in the Han Solo
- 59:17situation, right when they say he died of fool's death, I I
- 59:20feel the opposite of that because like specifically it's
- 59:25like because when when Kylo Ren was Ben Solo.
- 59:30Like when he sees like that's his kid.
- 59:33So I feel like he was trying to help his kid.
- 59:35And sure, I get it. I get.
- 59:37It and like, you know, like Ben Solo wants to be part of the
- 59:40Dark Side so badly because he's cosplaying Vader.
- 59:44He feels like he has to do what Vader would do.
- 59:47Yeah, no. I get.
- 59:49I get, I get the logic behind it.
- 59:51I just felt like this, you know? It was unceremonious, I feel,
- 59:56especially for such a big character.
- 59:57It was unceremonious, like I get that, but like do something
- 1:00:01else. Make me happy.
- 1:00:04Come on. Yeah, no, but I'm just saying
- 1:00:06also, but sometimes we have to understand, especially with
- 1:00:09these types of franchises, like I know everybody comes out and
- 1:00:12says they're not cinema, they're not.
- 1:00:14It's like, yeah, and I disagree if I wanna if I.
- 1:00:18If I want to see, like, if I want to see some depressing
- 1:00:20biopic about a gangster that gets shot 50 times after he's
- 1:00:24killed all of his opponents, and I'll go watch a Scorsese film.
- 1:00:28If I want to see that, like, I don't understand why.
- 1:00:31One thing like there's a lot of stuff I don't like.
- 1:00:33Like I'm not a big fan of horror movies, but I'm never going to
- 1:00:37just go out and say, oh, horror movies suck or horror movies are
- 1:00:40terrible or they're not cinema. It's like.
- 1:00:42It's not my thing when you come to comic books.
- 1:00:46I don't want any of your depressing, weird.
- 1:00:48Like, no, I didn't come to see that.
- 1:00:52I came to see a guy spin kick a giant purple man and come for,
- 1:00:57you know. Anyway, but getting back to a
- 1:00:59kind of forever, like, I just think like some of the writing
- 1:01:03because like also what Recaster Tyler was saying is that these
- 1:01:06people don't have their head in the game.
- 1:01:08I really don't think they do. I really think they're rushing
- 1:01:10this. They're going into this way too
- 1:01:12early. They're not really thinking
- 1:01:14about the decisions that they're making here because they're in
- 1:01:17grief. And when you're grieving, you're
- 1:01:19not 100% present. So like.
- 1:01:24When we get to T'challa also, it's just like they forgot like
- 1:01:27certain parts of the MCU war. Like if we go to Civil War, they
- 1:01:32instantly freeze Bucky with cryostasis.
- 1:01:36Why couldn't they just do that with T'challa?
- 1:01:38Good point. It would have been a way to
- 1:01:43obscure the the, the, the man and all of that stuff.
- 1:01:46Take him out the movie and still have the same movie if they did
- 1:01:51it in the blip. They would have explained a
- 1:01:53whole lot more. As I mentioned earlier, like
- 1:01:56they didn't really need to kill the character.
- 1:01:58Everybody was fine with not having him in McConnell forever.
- 1:02:01We all collectively said, OK, look, if you're not going to
- 1:02:03have him in McConnell forever, we get it.
- 1:02:07And like Ryan Kugler was even coming out at the time and
- 1:02:09saying he wanted to retire because that's how much, that's
- 1:02:12how hurt he was. And I was just like you did not
- 1:02:15in the headspace to do the movie.
- 1:02:17Because now as you get into the movie, there's just a lot of
- 1:02:20stuff that starts being contradictory, like for example,
- 1:02:26name or snuck in twice. That's a big issue for me
- 1:02:30because I'm just like this is supposed to be the smartest
- 1:02:33people on the planet the first time, I mean, I still don't
- 1:02:36understand, but fine the first time, fine, fine the second
- 1:02:40time. I felt like they would have been
- 1:02:42a nation that prepares in case this guy comes back.
- 1:02:46Because he threatened the Queen and the Princess, I guess a big
- 1:02:50deal. Kind of raises his concerns for
- 1:02:54the security, really, doesn't it?
- 1:02:56Like, yes, he can get on. That that's bad, surely.
- 1:02:59Surely anyone can get. This that is bad.
- 1:03:03Like for me, I was like no. And then also when I look at
- 1:03:06what they did with them, Baku. And again, when people hear me
- 1:03:09complain about him, Baku, I'm not talking about his amount of
- 1:03:12screen time. It's not how much time you give
- 1:03:15a character, it's how you depict them, cuz everybody loves Heath
- 1:03:19Ledger, right? He only had 15 minutes in the
- 1:03:21dark night. No, I.
- 1:03:24Didn't have a lot of screen time.
- 1:03:25I know what you're saying with him.
- 1:03:26Buckle like I felt like he was not the same character in this,
- 1:03:31like kind of came across in the first one.
- 1:03:35He's very menacing. He's just like Opposing Force.
- 1:03:38You really do feel that like he's, yeah, he will help Black
- 1:03:43Panther and he, his tribe is supporting them, but like, they
- 1:03:48are, they're allies. They're not friends.
- 1:03:51That was the vibe I got And then.
- 1:03:54I think the progression, yeah, I think the progression of the
- 1:03:57relationship is fine. I mean, again, that's a Black
- 1:03:59Panther purist. Black fans appearances were very
- 1:04:03pissed because the guy who they the guy who's actually because
- 1:04:07in in the comics T'challa has like 2 childhood friends.
- 1:04:11One is called Taku, the other one is Wakabi and Taku is like
- 1:04:15gay. So that was like a big thing
- 1:04:17because they were just like oh like he he was like best friends
- 1:04:21with this guy but they were like you know it was like a
- 1:04:23progressive thing and whatever. And they even did a whole issue
- 1:04:26where Taku gets married to this guy called Horatio.
- 1:04:29And it was like, in what kind of voices or whatever?
- 1:04:32So it was like a very pro LGBTQ thing.
- 1:04:34But it was like very natural. It wasn't like a forced
- 1:04:37situation where they just instantly made the character
- 1:04:39gay. There was a bunch of history
- 1:04:41there, which was very interesting.
- 1:04:43Yeah. But like when we get to mbaku in
- 1:04:46this movie, I just felt like he was used to power scale people.
- 1:04:50And I just feel like that's a very poor use of that character
- 1:04:53because he was so impactful in Black Panther one like in Black
- 1:04:57Panther 2. Sure, he has to arm wrestle him
- 1:05:00for challenge day. And I'm just like that's already
- 1:05:02contradictory to what you guys set up in Black Panther One,
- 1:05:06because in Black Panther 1, Chadwick had to Chadwick to
- 1:05:10Chala had to fight people without the herb.
- 1:05:14Like that's what he had to do. Like he had to fight people
- 1:05:17without his superpowers and prove that without his powers
- 1:05:20he's still a competent king of Wakando.
- 1:05:22Whatever. So why is surely getting to arm
- 1:05:25wrestle and Baku with the with the heart-shaped herb?
- 1:05:28That's not fair to me. And then also like Neymor, we
- 1:05:33have to learn how Neymor is powerful because he can knock
- 1:05:37Mbaku out with one punch. That's just like, but why are we
- 1:05:40doing this? I feel like Mbaku, his screen
- 1:05:43time should have been utilized a whole lot better and everything.
- 1:05:48And then like, again, I'm like, I'm not a person who's
- 1:05:52hypocritical. Honestly, I think the only
- 1:05:54reason I'm thinking about this movie in this in this light and
- 1:05:57I I know I sound like a Grinch. No, I disagree.
- 1:06:01I think. I think you've you're always
- 1:06:03very I've noticed this about you.
- 1:06:05You're always kind of quite fair with your opinions.
- 1:06:07It's never like this is how it should be.
- 1:06:09Any other opinion is bad. It's always quite level headed
- 1:06:12and logical and this is my opinion, but you know, take it
- 1:06:16what it will. Yeah.
- 1:06:18OK. You obviously are not on
- 1:06:20Twitter. Yeah, I avoid Twitter like the
- 1:06:24playing with. Well, it's X now, because I
- 1:06:27don't know what the hell you wanna do.
- 1:06:28No. No one is ever gonna call it
- 1:06:30that. Like, I'm sorry, that's not
- 1:06:32happening. Never.
- 1:06:33Even the logo sucks, but anyway. But getting getting back to it,
- 1:06:38like, yeah, I again, I still feel like the performances were
- 1:06:42amazing from everybody. Absolutely.
- 1:06:44From what I've seen, because I never I'm I I just started
- 1:06:47watching the movie because people have been urging me to
- 1:06:49watch the movie to have a better fair opinion.
- 1:06:51I've just started getting through the movie because it's
- 1:06:54it's tough for me to I I couldn't bring myself to watch
- 1:06:57it on initial release. I really I didn't have it in me
- 1:07:00because I was just like they're killing my favorite character
- 1:07:02and they're just putting him in the ground and they're having a
- 1:07:04whole funeral. And it is like it was a lot for
- 1:07:08me personally because I was just like.
- 1:07:11Because I grew up on Tatala, like I've been reading him for
- 1:07:1415 years now. So for them to to kill the
- 1:07:17character in the way that they did, that was just I I I
- 1:07:21couldn't do it. I I wanted to support, but I
- 1:07:23couldn't do it. You do something that's really
- 1:07:25cool actually in the movie, which I I really did, is the
- 1:07:28fact that they go, sure, he goes through this whole storyline, we
- 1:07:32move away from Black Panther and she then becomes Black Panther
- 1:07:36and everything, right? But then right at the end, she's
- 1:07:39there, she's on a beach and it cuts the loads of flashbacks of
- 1:07:44of Chala. And I just thought that was
- 1:07:47really cool when you're talking about grief because at this
- 1:07:50point it would have been years later.
- 1:07:52And it kind of like spoke to this idea that, yeah, like
- 1:07:55people pass away, but you never forget.
- 1:07:57You don't, You don't stop feeling like sad about it.
- 1:08:00You just kind of learn to move forward.
- 1:08:03And of course they do the whole, you know, this is his son, etc.
- 1:08:07The continuation of the bloodline and stuff.
- 1:08:08But it's done in a kind of respectful way.
- 1:08:12I think it's, I don't know, I feel they handled it quite well
- 1:08:17in that sense. I can see that.
- 1:08:21I mean, again, personally, I just, I feel like it's very much
- 1:08:24conflating fiction with reality, which is very dangerous
- 1:08:27territory in my opinion. But I just feel like with with,
- 1:08:32particularly when we get to the sun, it's just like I feel like
- 1:08:36they wanted to give us an olive branch as to travel fans.
- 1:08:39But like I just feel like they like they've done something
- 1:08:42where it's going to be very confusing in the MCU because if
- 1:08:46we go to Black Panther three and this six year old kid is all of
- 1:08:50a sudden 21. How that's not Yeah, that's not
- 1:08:54gonna work. What I'm saying though, is like
- 1:08:56if we go to Black Panther three and the kid is 21, how It just
- 1:09:03might drank some serum, You know, standard.
- 1:09:05Yeah, yeah, it's. He just had a.
- 1:09:07Gross if they can and if they can time travel.
- 1:09:10If they can time travel, it makes more issues for me
- 1:09:13personally because I'm like if you can time travel, why don't
- 1:09:16you just go back in time to winter travel was not sick and
- 1:09:19then just help him there is that's not how time travel.
- 1:09:22Works not how time travel works. Everybody broken so many rules
- 1:09:27of time travel, like Captain America fought himself.
- 1:09:31Like that should have caused the time paradox right then and
- 1:09:34there. Like the whole thing should have
- 1:09:36been, I thought, the whole the whole thing about how he goes
- 1:09:39back and he marries Peggy and spends the rest of his days with
- 1:09:41her. Oh, no, He killed him.
- 1:09:41I was like, but what about like her husband that she had and all
- 1:09:46the other? He killed him.
- 1:09:48That'd be his. He's mine.
- 1:09:53Bye. Bye.
- 1:09:54Yeah, he just came in with the vibranium shield and just
- 1:09:57chopped that dude's head off. He never stood a chance.
- 1:10:05I mean, regular small #2 Steve Rogers is a World War Two hero.
- 1:10:11He never stood a chance and like, gone.
- 1:10:16Gone. Yeah, sorry.
- 1:10:17Go ahead, I was. I was going to just move away
- 1:10:20from marble, but if you got some more stuff you'd like to.
- 1:10:23Oh, no. Anyway, like, that's just my
- 1:10:24whole spiel on that. It's um.
- 1:10:26Anyway, yeah, I just basically that's my focus right now is
- 1:10:30just trying to get to Tyler back into, you know, the in a
- 1:10:33specific light. Just trying to get him back in a
- 1:10:35specific life so that people can also start focusing on the
- 1:10:39character more than just the actor, because I feel like
- 1:10:42characters live forever. I mean, you know, you and me,
- 1:10:45humans, we pass. But like ideas and characters
- 1:10:48are ideas. They they live in perpetuity.
- 1:10:51I mean there's a reason why Batman is 75, but they still
- 1:10:53draw him as a 45 year old man. So I just feel like putting the
- 1:10:58character down for good is not. It's not good socially and it's
- 1:11:02not good business wise. But anyway, we can move on to
- 1:11:05something else. My bad.
- 1:11:07No. Hey, listen, I I love it.
- 1:11:09I love it. I wanted to explore this with
- 1:11:10you and and we got like over an hour out of that.
- 1:11:13So but I want, I want to talk about you, man.
- 1:11:18I want to talk a little bit about you.
- 1:11:19So we'll we'll start off with something that kind of sucked
- 1:11:22but I'd like to kind of get your thoughts on how you've moved
- 1:11:25since it. So you were hacked on Instagram?
- 1:11:28A while back built up this this Instagram account and
- 1:11:32everything, and then it just randomly got hacked and then
- 1:11:36some asshole was posting like Bitcoin or some shit.
- 1:11:39Yeah, to be fair, I was a little bit dumb about it.
- 1:11:41To be fair, I basically people never usually get me on that
- 1:11:48stuff unless, like, I kind of know you.
- 1:11:51So I think they hacked an Instagram friend of mine where
- 1:11:54we used to communicate all the time.
- 1:11:56So when he messaged me and I thought he was sending me a link
- 1:12:00or something and I was like, no, I mean, I know this guy, we've
- 1:12:02chopped it up for a while, only for me to find out later he was
- 1:12:05hacked. So that's kind of how they got
- 1:12:08me. And then I found out I was
- 1:12:10locked out of my account and then I tried to get it back.
- 1:12:13I even like tried to pay another hacker to do something and that
- 1:12:17didn't work out for me as well. So I basically just had to bite
- 1:12:20the bullet. I just had to take the L and.
- 1:12:24In in in a couple of ways. It's like it's not the first
- 1:12:27time stuff like this kind of happened to me in a sense.
- 1:12:30Not like it's the hacking thing, but like when I was it, it just
- 1:12:33reminded me of my days when I was doing Vine.
- 1:12:36And then one day Vine was shut down and all those followers I
- 1:12:41built on Vine were just gone. So I guess I just had to be
- 1:12:44like, if I still want to do this, I guess I got to do this.
- 1:12:48And yeah, I just, I kind of swallowed my pride a little bit.
- 1:12:52And you know. After crying for like 2 days and
- 1:12:55I just decided to like Truck On because I didn't have like, I
- 1:13:00love this way too much. Like as much as this social
- 1:13:03media game can get to a lot of people, for me it's it's I
- 1:13:08really like being able to talk to people like this.
- 1:13:10I really like being able to make content around stuff that I like
- 1:13:13and I really like being able to, you know, chop it up with people
- 1:13:16on on like a lot of platforms and all of that stuff.
- 1:13:19So yeah, I mean it sucked, but it was just a thing that
- 1:13:23happened. It wasn't the end of the world.
- 1:13:24I mean, I think also at the end of the day, we have to also
- 1:13:27remember sometimes that we over exaggerate things in our mind.
- 1:13:31Like I wasn't making any money off of that account.
- 1:13:34I wasn't like, you know, like it.
- 1:13:36Like as much as losing it sucked it it wasn't the end of the
- 1:13:40world is what I'm saying. Yeah I I felt bad for you when
- 1:13:45it happened. But I I was glad to see that you
- 1:13:47set up a second account and you moved forward and stuff and it
- 1:13:50because I I felt the frustration on your behalf as well.
- 1:13:53I was gutted to see that and it was just frustrating.
- 1:13:56I remember sharing the link around and and just trying to
- 1:14:00get people. To stop following the account,
- 1:14:02follow your new one and stuff and.
- 1:14:05Thank you, thank you for that. Thank you for that.
- 1:14:06I think the the thing that hurt me the most about it.
- 1:14:09Hurt me, I guess, if that's the term.
- 1:14:12The thing that pissed me off the most about it was that he
- 1:14:14started messing with all day. I don't even know who he or she,
- 1:14:18but they started messing with other people in my like circle
- 1:14:22and whatever that was. I think the thing that pissed me
- 1:14:25off the most is that, like they were trying to hack other
- 1:14:28accounts and like one of these guys that I was training with
- 1:14:31her at the time, he was like a he was like an up and coming MMA
- 1:14:34fighter. Like his page almost got hacked,
- 1:14:37but I managed to warn him. Before it got hacked.
- 1:14:40And he still gladly has his page, but it was like, that was
- 1:14:44the thing that kind of was. The worst part for me is that
- 1:14:47like, now they're gonna try and do this to other people that I
- 1:14:51know, and I have to, like, warn them as much as possible to not
- 1:14:54follow this account that it's not me anymore.
- 1:14:58I mean, some people picked it up instantly because I've never
- 1:15:00spoken about Bitcoin ever in my life.
- 1:15:04Like, I'm like, it's like there I think there were like 1000
- 1:15:07posts and now all of a sudden there's two Bitcoin posts and
- 1:15:11also they had like an American denomination.
- 1:15:13So like, of course, like, people know I'm South African.
- 1:15:16Like I I have it in my bio and everything, so.
- 1:15:20Some people picked up on that, but, you know, sometimes they
- 1:15:22get people via like the Dms and everything.
- 1:15:24But that was the worst thing for me, was that, like they were
- 1:15:27gonna do this to somebody else. And I was just trying to
- 1:15:29understand what is the point of doing this stuff.
- 1:15:32But like, yeah, I was. I was.
- 1:15:33That was. I think that was the big thing
- 1:15:35that was an issue for me. Let's bring it to something more
- 1:15:40positive. Your comic book series near Wave
- 1:15:44now obviously three years ago. It is very much becoming an
- 1:15:48idea. And since then you've released,
- 1:15:51I believe you released comments. I bought one of them at one
- 1:15:53point. Yeah, you did.
- 1:15:54Thank you so much. Yeah, no worries.
- 1:15:57Took us through the progress of Neil and Wave.
- 1:16:01Well, we currently working on issue 2.
- 1:16:04It's just that it's very difficult now because we're in
- 1:16:07two different countries and so like.
- 1:16:12The artist that I'm working with is in Zimbabwe and I'm in here
- 1:16:15in South Africa. And also he's got like a date,
- 1:16:17like he's helping me for free. That's the one thing like I
- 1:16:21still, I still, my mind is still blown because I was just doing
- 1:16:25stuff on Instagram and he Dmed me one day and he was just like,
- 1:16:28hey, can I work with you? And I'm like, I don't have money
- 1:16:31to pay you, man. I wouldn't want you to just, you
- 1:16:33know, and he was just like, no, I'll do it for free.
- 1:16:35And that's just. Like when I tell that story at
- 1:16:39Comic Con is just is. I hope it.
- 1:16:41I hope it's just going to blow people's minds because like it
- 1:16:43still blows Mama. And like, he's also good.
- 1:16:46Like that's the other thing. It's not like he sucks.
- 1:16:48He's also like a competent artist, so that on top of him
- 1:16:53doing it for free was a very big deal.
- 1:16:56But yeah, we I've written 12 issues now.
- 1:17:00I basically have, like most of the story planned out, and we're
- 1:17:03hoping to release issue 2 very soon.
- 1:17:07Seeing as how he's busy with and I'm also in my spare time when
- 1:17:11I've not been renting about the Chala.
- 1:17:14I'm also in my spare time spent a lot of time redrawing issue
- 1:17:181:00 so that I can make it look better.
- 1:17:21So there is like they there is like what's this?
- 1:17:26There is like, you know things that are coming in that universe
- 1:17:30and I'm still doing art like we're nailing the, we're
- 1:17:33refining the design. Because we we're trying to get a
- 1:17:37better looking design for the character because I'm trying to
- 1:17:40make his mask a little bit more iconic.
- 1:17:43I I kind of want that Spiderman, Batman, you know, like Deadpool
- 1:17:48effect, like when you even see a pin of the character or whatever
- 1:17:51where it's just like a small pin, you know that's the
- 1:17:53character. That's kind of the thing that
- 1:17:55I'm aiming for right now. And also in that time I've also
- 1:18:00released another book called Blackfist which is on web tunes
- 1:18:04as well. So that's another story.
- 1:18:06That one is specifically handled and drawn by me.
- 1:18:10And I've also nailed down like a couple of issues for that
- 1:18:13particular story where if you want the general gist, I don't
- 1:18:17know if anybody's ever watched Dragon Ball Z, but it's
- 1:18:19basically supposed to be Dragon Ball Z meets Black Panther.
- 1:18:23Yeah. So I mean, I'm still creating.
- 1:18:24I'm still like very, very busy. Yeah.
- 1:18:28And I'm so like I've got like I've got like a couple of drafts
- 1:18:33in in the in the chamber for stories that I'm going to tell
- 1:18:36cuz I'm also planning to get into animation and all of that
- 1:18:39wonderful stuff. Good stuff man.
- 1:18:44So we didn't actually speak about this on the first show.
- 1:18:48There's a lot of things that we didn't speak about, cuz then I
- 1:18:50kind of we did the show obviously when we stayed in
- 1:18:53touch on Instagram and we did a bunch of live streams together.
- 1:18:57And one of the things that you used to do quite often, which I
- 1:19:00really loved, was these like freestyle rap.
- 1:19:03Live streams where yeah, like and like people would put stuff
- 1:19:06in the comments and you just rap about whatever and it was just
- 1:19:10this incredible skill that you have.
- 1:19:13Do you Do you still do that or are we ever going to get like an
- 1:19:17album or something like cuz I'd love to see it.
- 1:19:21I have done, I have done and I have done a mix tape like an EP
- 1:19:26like A10 track EP. Where can we?
- 1:19:29Find that it's on my YouTube. Basically it's called the Heroic
- 1:19:33episode where EP is like capitalized because it was like
- 1:19:37a play on is it under the Buck Master name as well.
- 1:19:41Yes, yes, yes, Buck Master Cool reacts.
- 1:19:43It's in there. If you go to my channel and you
- 1:19:47type in heroic episode, it's going to come up.
- 1:19:50Where there's like 10 tracks or whatever and I do plan to get
- 1:19:54back into, I do plan to get back into doing that stuff again.
- 1:20:00But like I said, it's just like when when you, when you're
- 1:20:02learning to draw and all of that stuff, it takes up so much of
- 1:20:05your time. Like I like most of my time
- 1:20:07nowadays has been spent like I still do the rap thing.
- 1:20:10I still, I still practice and all of that stuff because like
- 1:20:13it's just it's it's my natural, OK, you can shut up.
- 1:20:18Sorry about that. I'm so sick of hearing my voice
- 1:20:21sometimes. But anyway like just getting
- 1:20:24getting into like with the rap thing, that's like my natural
- 1:20:27talent. I've always been able to do that
- 1:20:29like since I was like 5 or 6 or whatever.
- 1:20:32Like I think everybody has their thing.
- 1:20:34I think that's my my thing more technically.
- 1:20:38So yeah, I'm planning to do more music.
- 1:20:41I was actually planning a lyrical music video.
- 1:20:44I had a whole series are it's still on my channel called The
- 1:20:47Hip Hop Uber, where I used to drive and do freestyles and all
- 1:20:50of that stuff. And yeah, the rap music stuff is
- 1:20:53not going anywhere. It's just right now with the
- 1:20:56comic book stuff, I just feel like it's way more.
- 1:20:59But yeah, I still plan to do a whole lot more rap stuff, like
- 1:21:02it's not gonna go away. And I do plan to bring back that
- 1:21:05series. I mean it was on my hacked
- 1:21:06channel, which which sucks cuz I lost a lot of those videos, but
- 1:21:10I do plan to bring all of that back and hopefully get people
- 1:21:14like I like. The only thing is I need to
- 1:21:16build up my following so that I can get more people
- 1:21:18participating, cuz I I do feel like it's more fun when there's
- 1:21:21more people in the chat. I really think you should try on
- 1:21:25TikTok. You do very well.
- 1:21:27Something to consider for the future.
- 1:21:31I'll get it. Definitely do you, man, And let
- 1:21:33me know when you do. I'll follow you and share you
- 1:21:35around. Thank you so much.
- 1:21:38Couple of quick fire questions for you that I didn't actually
- 1:21:42used to ask when I first did this show, but now it's become
- 1:21:45like a fixture at my show to ask every guest this.
- 1:21:48So I gotta go, I gotta wash your other other pods.
- 1:21:52Like, I guess when I be my drunk thing, that's gonna be what I do
- 1:21:54this afternoon. Oh, it's gonna be so many.
- 1:21:56Man, you were like 2 / 200 to catch up on.
- 1:22:03I'll take it slow. I'll take it slow.
- 1:22:06What's the best advice you've ever received.
- 1:22:10The best advice I've ever received man.
- 1:22:14This one I kind of came across and it was from a video.
- 1:22:17It wasn't in real life. This one I came across from and
- 1:22:20like it was a kind of thing of you need to learn to see things
- 1:22:26as they are. Like, I think that was the
- 1:22:31biggest piece of advice I've ever gotten.
- 1:22:33And because I live, I I live around a lot of people and I
- 1:22:37used to be like this as well, where we overreact or Hyper
- 1:22:41Reactor and all of that stuff and you get into social media as
- 1:22:46well. Like that's one thing that
- 1:22:48helped me deal with the fact that I got hacked is that I had
- 1:22:51to see things as they are. Like, I had to understand that
- 1:22:56as much as I had this page, I existed before this Instagram
- 1:23:01page and I'm probably going to exist after this Instagram page.
- 1:23:04It's not like you know, and even like in real life situation when
- 1:23:09I've lost money or I've gotten robbed or you know, things
- 1:23:12happened. Like I don't know if you saw
- 1:23:15this, I got into an accident on time and it was pretty like it
- 1:23:18was pretty scary because it was like a giant truck or whatever
- 1:23:21that almost struggled on my car. But like learning to see things
- 1:23:25as they are and help me to put it into context that I'm still
- 1:23:28here. I'm fine.
- 1:23:30The truck didn't fall. I don't have to have nightmares
- 1:23:32about the truck falling. It's just being able to see what
- 1:23:39is instead of exaggerating everything in your mind.
- 1:23:42And it's helped me tremendously is dealing with social media in
- 1:23:46general. Because as you know, when we
- 1:23:49started this game, people were telling us if you do 12345, you
- 1:23:52should have 100,000 subscribers. And, yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:59But if you realize that as a human being, you were alive
- 1:24:03before followers were even a thing and you didn't even know
- 1:24:06all of that stuff. And, like, it ties also into
- 1:24:08identity and everything. Where like, as much as I call
- 1:24:13myself a man, as much as I call myself black, as much as I call
- 1:24:16myself a South African when I was a baby, I didn't know any of
- 1:24:19this. Like, somebody had to tell me.
- 1:24:21Like, I could have been from Mars and I could have been.
- 1:24:25I don't know, like, like, the point is a lot of the stuff is
- 1:24:29inventions. And a lot of people put a lot of
- 1:24:31value into inventions more than the stuff that's already there.
- 1:24:35Like, people will value, a follower count over a human
- 1:24:39being. People will value a car over
- 1:24:43like or they'll value like a kids ability over the kid just
- 1:24:47having fun or whatever. Like they'll look at that and
- 1:24:50they'll be like, oh, he can play like Picasso.
- 1:24:52And meanwhile that kid is miserable and it's just like,
- 1:24:55yeah, what's the point of this? So like for me, just learning to
- 1:25:01see things as they are, learning to see my identity as it is,
- 1:25:05that it's just an aspect or a tool or whatever, but it's not
- 1:25:08who I really AM because who I am is alive.
- 1:25:12That advice, it changed a lot in my life.
- 1:25:16Like just a lot in my mental head space, not a lot in, well,
- 1:25:19I would say even a little bit in my financial space because I'm
- 1:25:22doing better financially than I ever was.
- 1:25:24But like, yeah, I I just think that's the biggest piece of
- 1:25:27advice I've ever gone. Wise words, Thank you so much
- 1:25:30for sharing. What's the biggest life lesson
- 1:25:34you've learned so far? The biggest life lesson,
- 1:25:40meditation is very helpful. Yeah.
- 1:25:44Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that's the biggest life
- 1:25:47lesson that I've learned is that in learning to see things as
- 1:25:50they are, it's just it's learning that, you know, to also
- 1:25:54to to sit down. I think a lot of us don't sit
- 1:25:57down and learning to sit down and just to also like get my
- 1:26:03head together. Bio meditation is the biggest
- 1:26:07life lesson I've ever learned or whatever because like again,
- 1:26:11things will happen. But like you get to control how
- 1:26:15you respond and that is that's a very big deal for where I'm at
- 1:26:19right now. It's also part of the reason why
- 1:26:22I think I frustrate people on Twitter is because they'll cuss
- 1:26:25me out and call me all sorts of names and words and letters and
- 1:26:29expertise that I've never seen combinations for.
- 1:26:32But because I know what it is, I've never.
- 1:26:36I've always responded instead of reacting, and that's always been
- 1:26:40nice. So that's the biggest life
- 1:26:43lesson I can tell you that I've learned.
- 1:26:45Thank you so much, man. As we draw things to a close for
- 1:26:48the day, do you have any upcoming projects or some final
- 1:26:51thoughts that you'd like to share with our listeners?
- 1:26:53Well, if you guys follow me on web tunes under Meister Geek
- 1:26:57Media, I have two projects that you can check out over there.
- 1:27:02Yeah, so it's the Black Panther fan comic, which is really I'm,
- 1:27:07I'm very proud of it. And it's also the Black Fist
- 1:27:10stuff. Neon Wave is going to be coming
- 1:27:12soon. I might also be putting that on
- 1:27:14web tunes because that's what's the term for this.
- 1:27:17It's free 99 or whatever people need to get to check out stuff.
- 1:27:21So yeah, and also some music stuff on the way.
- 1:27:25And yeah, but mostly it's the comic book stuff right now.
- 1:27:30Also planning to open commissions soon, doing some
- 1:27:33free Commission spots just to, you know, design some people
- 1:27:37with OCS if they want or whatever.
- 1:27:39I used to do that. Now that my skills are a little
- 1:27:41bit better, I want to do that again, just to give some people
- 1:27:44some free OCS. But yeah, that's mostly all the
- 1:27:48stuff that's coming up right now.
- 1:27:51No, no, no, no. Those are the things you can
- 1:27:53watch out for. Excellent, man.
- 1:27:56I'm proud of you, man. Like how hard you work.
- 1:27:59I remember like when we first connected, that was something I
- 1:28:02really connected with you on. Was like how hard you work.
- 1:28:05And yeah, I just. I just wish you all the best,
- 1:28:09man. I really wanna see you succeed.
- 1:28:11And no likewise, man. Likewise, like when I do this,
- 1:28:15when I hopefully do this animation thing, you're gonna be
- 1:28:18one of the voices I tap. I'd love to.
- 1:28:21You know, your voice reels are really good.
- 1:28:23Like, I really like your voice reel.
- 1:28:25Thanks for all your acting reels and all of that stuff.
- 1:28:27Look, I mean, I catch all of your podcasts, but I definitely
- 1:28:29catch all of that stuff. And and yeah, you're definitely
- 1:28:32gonna be one of the people I tap for for a voice.
- 1:28:35I feel like you got an excellent voice and you do accents really
- 1:28:38well. You say the word.
- 1:28:39I am there. I can't wait.
- 1:28:42I will. Of course I'll be there.
- 1:28:44Thank you so much for appearing on the show, man.
- 1:28:46Really appreciate it. No, man, Thank you for having me
- 1:28:48back. Like, I definitely enjoyed this.
- 1:28:51I definitely want to do this again.
- 1:28:53And oh, always welcome. Oh, another thing, just the last
- 1:28:56thing, is that I do plan to bring the Creative Podcast back
- 1:28:59and you were definitely the inspiration for that podcast.
- 1:29:01So thank you so much. Yes, do bring it back.
- 1:29:03I thought you had saying really good going.
- 1:29:05I completely forgot about that. My apologies.
- 1:29:07I do remember this. Yeah, I I'd loved going on your
- 1:29:09show. Well, I mean, it's not your
- 1:29:10fault. I just haven't done it in
- 1:29:12forever. I mean, Helen.
- 1:29:14No, I know, I know, I know. I mean, this is this show.
- 1:29:17I I imagined it a lot to be. Be like catching up, but also
- 1:29:21kind of exploring a lot of the things that we didn't actually
- 1:29:23cover in the first podcast. Because when we did that podcast
- 1:29:26together, we didn't really know each other.
- 1:29:29We'd saw it was like meeting for the first time and then we got
- 1:29:33to know each other afterwards. And then I remember thinking
- 1:29:36like afterwards, like, oh, damn, there's all this stuff we could
- 1:29:38have covered. I mean, we still had a good
- 1:29:40time, but I was just yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I I had a lot.
- 1:29:43I had a very fun time. I still like watch that from
- 1:29:45time to time because it. Was very cool, man.
- 1:29:47And you're a very, you're a very good host.
- 1:29:49Like I really think the podcast is underrated and I definitely
- 1:29:53like the variety in it cuz you get a lot of different types of
- 1:29:56guests and all of that stuff like you talking to people from
- 1:29:59every type of medium, which is really cool.
- 1:30:01It's cool for me man. It keeps me fresh, it keeps me
- 1:30:05thinking and doing my research and learning about people and
- 1:30:09and that's another reason as well why I was quite excited to
- 1:30:12bring you back on the show cuz when you first came on.
- 1:30:17You were my first guest three years ago and I wasn't really
- 1:30:20sure what the podcast was going to be.
- 1:30:22Like I said at the top of this. And also, I don't know, like I I
- 1:30:25feel like I've become more confident as an interviewer and
- 1:30:29a host now than I was then, because then, you know, for
- 1:30:34instance, something simple like ad libbing and following up on
- 1:30:37stuff, I I didn't really get that as much.
- 1:30:39I was very much in my papers like a.
- 1:30:42So you do this because you know, I didn't notice.
- 1:30:46I didn't notice, I'll tell you that.
- 1:30:49I just hit it Well, well, listen, it's always a pleasure
- 1:30:54and you're always welcome back on the show, You know that.
- 1:30:57Stay in touch, man. Oh, man.
- 1:30:58Thank you so much for having me on, man.
- 1:31:00And yes, much blessing and success to you indefinitely.
- 1:31:03You're one of the people I'm hitting up first.
- 1:31:06What do you call you peoples? Because I got to make them sign
- 1:31:10off. Audience viewers, you don't have
- 1:31:13a, you don't have a, like, they're not the Rivians or
- 1:31:16something like that. Some people have tried.
- 1:31:18Some people have tried to give some names, but I don't know if
- 1:31:21I'm comfortable with that. I will let the people decide
- 1:31:24that. I just say viewers, audience,
- 1:31:27listeners, listen listeners, podcasts, listeners.
- 1:31:30I'm throwing out Rivians audience.
- 1:31:33Y'all. Let me know how that how that
- 1:31:34sounds. You don't know what you've done.
- 1:31:43Anyway, thank you so much. Yeah, man, thank you so much.
- 1:31:47And thank you to your audience and everything.
- 1:31:48And yeah, much more luck and blessings to you and peace out.
- 1:31:53And a couple of things to my audience before I go.
