- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 27th of
- 0:16November, and it's great to have your company on this very
- 0:20important day. Because as you look down at your
- 0:22feet, you will see your socks. And they may or may not be a
- 0:26matching pair. Because you know as well as I do
- 0:29one of the great mysteries of life is that our socks just
- 0:32disappear. And as it turns out, today is
- 0:35actually the day, more than any other day as was discovered in
- 0:39the UK by a chain of laundromats, that people
- 0:43complain about their socks missing.
- 0:45Don't know why, but today is consistently the day each year
- 0:48that people complain most about missing socks.
- 0:51And if you wanted a hilarious rabbit hole to disappear down,
- 0:56boy, the theories about what happens to socks are fantastic.
- 0:59My favourite being the sock wormhole theory.
- 1:02But that is another story for another day.
- 1:05We are back. We are with Paul as he urges his
- 1:09friends in Galatia not to be trapped in the old ways, but to
- 1:14relax and live into the freedom that they have in Christ.
- 1:18So let us do that with matching socks.
- 1:20Or not. Let's read together Galatians
- 1:23chapter 5. So Christ has truly set us free.
- 1:37Now make sure that you stay free and don't get tied up again in
- 1:41slavery to the law. Listen, I, Paul, tell you this,
- 1:46if you are counting on circumcision to make you right
- 1:49with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you.
- 1:53I'll say it again, If you were trying to find favour with God
- 1:57by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the
- 2:01whole law of Moses. For if you were trying to make
- 2:04yourself right with God by keeping the law, you have been
- 2:08cut off from Christ. You have fallen away from God's
- 2:12grace. But we who live by the Spirit
- 2:16eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has
- 2:20promised to us. For when we place our faith in
- 2:24Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised of
- 2:28being uncircumcised. What is important is faith
- 2:32expressing itself in love. You were running the race so
- 2:38well. Who has held you back from
- 2:40following the truth? It certainly isn't God, for He
- 2:43is the one who called you to freedom.
- 2:46This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads
- 2:50through the whole batch of dough.
- 2:52I'm trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false
- 2:56teachings. God will judge that person,
- 2:58whoever he is who has been confusing you.
- 3:03Dear brothers and sisters, if I was still preaching that you
- 3:07must be circumcised, as some say I do, why am I still being
- 3:11persecuted? If I were no longer preaching
- 3:15salvation through the cross of Christ, no one would be
- 3:18offended. I just wish that those
- 3:21troublemakers who want to mutilate you by circumcision
- 3:25would mutilate themselves. For you have been called to live
- 3:29in freedom, my brothers and sisters.
- 3:32But don't use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature.
- 3:36Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
- 3:41For the whole law can be summed up in this one command.
- 3:45Love your neighbour as yourself, but if you were always biting
- 3:50and devouring one another, watch out.
- 3:53Beware of destroying one another.
- 3:57So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives.
- 4:01Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.
- 4:06The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite
- 4:10of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires
- 4:15that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.
- 4:18These two forces are constantly fighting each other.
- 4:22So you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
- 4:26But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under
- 4:30obligation to the law of Moses. When you follow the desires of
- 4:35your sinful nature, the results are very clear.
- 4:39Sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry,
- 4:44sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger,
- 4:50selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness,
- 4:55wild parties, and other sins like these.
- 4:59Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that
- 5:03sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God, but the Holy
- 5:09Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives.
- 5:13Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
- 5:23faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
- 5:29There is no law against these things.
- 5:33Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and
- 5:37desires of their sinful nature to the cross and crucified them
- 5:41there. Since we are living by the
- 5:43Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part
- 5:48of our lives. Let us not become conceited or
- 5:52provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.
- 5:55Oh Jesus, thank you for this
- 6:07freedom that we have in you. Freedom from the trappings and
- 6:13the slavery to the law. But not that we can be free to
- 6:17follow whatever our depraved human nature tells us to, to
- 6:22seek and pursue, but that we can be free to love.
- 6:27Free from all of that complicated self consciousness
- 6:30that comes with the confusion of our sinful nature and free to
- 6:35just bask in your love and let that transform us, The Holy
- 6:41Spirit. Come grow your fruits in us so
- 6:44that we can be your people of love, building your Kingdom of
- 6:48love, sharing your heart of love because you are love.
- 6:55Our wonderful God, our beautiful Saviour, our mighty King of
- 6:59love. Let that be our anthem.
- 7:03Let that be our way, that way of love that you showed us so
- 7:08perfectly, Jesus. And so we claim your active love
- 7:12on the cross and all that it changes for us, and pray that
- 7:17you continue that work of transformation every day to make
- 7:21us your people of love. And we pray all of this in your
- 7:24loving name, Jesus, Amen.
