- 0:27Speaker 1: league year begins Monday the tampering period. The legal tampering
- 0:31Speaker 1: period opened, and we didn't have to wait long for
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Saints to be involved. A good time to start
- 0:36Speaker 1: to sort of recap and catch us up with everything
- 0:40Speaker 1: that's gone on. Ross Jackson jumps aboard as we start
- 0:42Speaker 1: the show, Louisiana Sports dot Net and locked on Saints.
- 0:46Speaker 1: How are you man?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Hey, you're doing great, Thanks for having me.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Of course, what a day for Twitter to go down, right,
- 0:51Speaker 1: no big one of the biggest news days of the
- 0:53Speaker 1: NFL calendar. Hey, let's start with let's just go chronologically
- 0:57Speaker 1: here from Monday and start with the news about Devon Gotscha,
- 1:00Speaker 1: the former LSU Tiger is going to be in New Orleans.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Saint tell us how it came together.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is a big move for New Orleans.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I know it's not you know, the big you know,
- 1:11Speaker 2: tens of millions of dollars, you know, contracts and record
- 1:14Speaker 2: breaking things and stuff like that, but this is a
- 1:16Speaker 2: nice move for New Orleans. So they wanted to find
- 1:19Speaker 2: a three tech style defensive tackle that can kind of,
- 1:22Speaker 2: you know, change the numbers in the middle, be a
- 1:24Speaker 2: big physical presence there. And Gotcha absolutely provides that. He
- 1:28Speaker 2: was a four year starter with the New England Patriots,
- 1:30Speaker 2: seventeen games in each of those four years, has been
- 1:32Speaker 2: durable and has been somebody that would check the box
- 1:35Speaker 2: in terms of what it is that the Saints you're
- 1:36Speaker 2: looking for, and they get them due to you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: in minimal risks. They send a twenty twenty sixth seventh
- 1:41Speaker 2: round pick, so a seventh round pick for next year
- 1:43Speaker 2: to get a guy that should be able to be
- 1:45Speaker 2: at the forefront of their team. Changes over on the
- 1:47Speaker 2: defensive side.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So as for how he fits in Brandon Staley's defense
- 1:52Speaker 1: and what this means for the guys currently on the
- 1:54Speaker 1: roster on the defensive line. What does that mean.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so you look at him as kind of being
- 1:59Speaker 2: a guy that can be a little bit versatile to
- 2:01Speaker 2: where he can be the anchor right in the middle
- 2:04Speaker 2: of those three man fronts, to where he's nose to
- 2:06Speaker 2: nose as a nose tackle with the center, for instance,
- 2:09Speaker 2: right over the top of the middle of the defense.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But he can also be a guy that can operate
- 2:13Speaker 2: as what we call a zero or one text So
- 2:15Speaker 2: that's the guy that lines up either knows to nose
- 2:17Speaker 2: with the center or right in between the center and
- 2:19Speaker 2: guard and those even man fronts, those four man fronts,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and so we expect that the Saints will be using
- 2:23Speaker 2: a lot more of those three man fronts, but they're
- 2:25Speaker 2: still going to have four guys down in line of
- 2:27Speaker 2: scrimmage in obvious passing situations things like that. Saints want
- 2:31Speaker 2: to be able to win games by rushing for the
- 2:32Speaker 2: NFL once the win games are rushing for and so
- 2:35Speaker 2: where Godshaw fits within all this is the ability to
- 2:37Speaker 2: be able to be that loan defensive tackle on the middle,
- 2:40Speaker 2: but also when he moves over and there's four guys
- 2:42Speaker 2: on the line, drawing double teams and then creating those
- 2:45Speaker 2: one on one opportunities for those other players on the
- 2:48Speaker 2: defensive line. So he'll have a lot of usage, I
- 2:52Speaker 2: guess I should say, in any of those fronts, regardless
- 2:55Speaker 2: of what the versatility of the New Orleans Saints defense
- 2:57Speaker 2: will end up calling for in any game situation.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And I literally, as you're talking, I just looked in
- 3:02Speaker 1: our Louisiana Sports Sudden at chat and I noticed that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: So I noticed you have some news about Nathan Shephard.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So fill us in there.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, So Nathan Shepherd sunning a one year deal with
- 3:12Speaker 2: the Saints. Accurdon and Justina Anderson NFL Insider, and so
- 3:14Speaker 2: that's another guy that they're locking down on the interior. Now,
- 3:18Speaker 2: he wasn't going to be a free agent here in
- 3:20Speaker 2: twenty twenty five, but he did have a seven million
- 3:23Speaker 2: dollar cap hit, which included a four point eight million
- 3:26Speaker 2: dollar base salary. The reason why that happened is because
- 3:28Speaker 2: he got some player incentsive bonuses not only from the Stints,
- 3:31Speaker 2: but from the NFL as a part of their player
- 3:34Speaker 2: Player program, player performance programs and things like that. So
- 3:37Speaker 2: his salary ended up bumping up a bit coming into
- 3:40Speaker 2: twenty twenty five, even beyond what the Saints had negotiated,
- 3:43Speaker 2: So this gives them an opportunity to be able to
- 3:45Speaker 2: lessen his hit here in twenty twenty five, and then
- 3:48Speaker 2: instead of his contract expiring or avoiding in twenty twenty
- 3:50Speaker 2: six as it was set to do, build some stuff
- 3:53Speaker 2: into the future for him. So they get a little
- 3:55Speaker 2: bit of an exchange here. They get a guy that's
- 3:57Speaker 2: veteran experiencing that they like a lot for two for
- 4:00Speaker 2: another year, but then also will likely reduce his salary
- 4:03Speaker 2: cap hit here in twenty twenty five.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Okay, at Ross Jackson, Louisiana Sports dot Net locked on
- 4:09Speaker 1: Saints podcast Busy day here in the NFL, the Saints
- 4:13Speaker 1: have already lost as well one of their free agents
- 4:16Speaker 1: with a pulse and a debo. Can you fill us
- 4:18Speaker 1: in on what we know here, because I know Ross
- 4:20Speaker 1: there were conflicting numbers as far as what's going on
- 4:23Speaker 1: with the debo.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, So the original report was that he signed with
- 4:27Speaker 2: the New York Giants on ten million dollars per year
- 4:30Speaker 2: of a deal over the course of three years. But
- 4:32Speaker 2: now it's looking like that's actually more of an eighteen
- 4:34Speaker 2: million dollars per year deal upwards. Yeah, upwards of fifty
- 4:38Speaker 2: four million dollars in terms of the total. Now, what
- 4:40Speaker 2: we don't know is if that is a you know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: there's these contracts that are agreed upon that are eighteen
- 4:46Speaker 2: million dollars per year, and there are the contracts that
- 4:48Speaker 2: agreed upon that are up to eighteen million dollars per year.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So it could be that the base level of the
- 4:53Speaker 2: contract is indeed ten million dollars per year, but there's
- 4:56Speaker 2: incentives like player availability and you know, post these in appearances,
- 5:00Speaker 2: player performance and things like that that could potentially tick
- 5:03Speaker 2: him up. So maybe that's where the discrepancy is, is
- 5:05Speaker 2: that it might be an intentive heavy contract. So we'll
- 5:07Speaker 2: wait to see what more details are. But the impact
- 5:10Speaker 2: for New Orleans is big because now you know, since
- 5:13Speaker 2: the trade deadline last year, both of their starting corners,
- 5:17Speaker 2: since you know, since the deebo was drafted years ago,
- 5:20Speaker 2: are now no longer here in New Orleans. So that
- 5:22Speaker 2: does mean that you're looking at a changing of the
- 5:24Speaker 2: guard of what the outside of that New Orleans Saints
- 5:26Speaker 2: defense was.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Ross. What should we look for in terms of what
- 5:30Speaker 1: is in the immediate short term here in this league
- 5:34Speaker 1: year for the Saints.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the biggest thing that you're looking at
- 5:37Speaker 2: is to watch them continue to address the changing kind
- 5:41Speaker 2: of prototypes and rolls over on the defensive side, So
- 5:46Speaker 2: going out there and searching for more free agents that
- 5:49Speaker 2: might be able to be those stand up edge rushers
- 5:51Speaker 2: as well as be those off ball linebackers that are
- 5:53Speaker 2: kind of tasked to do some things that are differently.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I think you're kind of looking towards, like what's your
- 5:57Speaker 2: depths behind Tomorrio Davis and Pete war and Er for instance.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Beyond that, of course, you know, they could continue to
- 6:03Speaker 2: invest on the defensive line, which I would certainly expect,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and then I'd watch for a name like a Sante
- 6:07Speaker 2: Samuel Junior, who Brandon Staley drafted in the second round
- 6:10Speaker 2: years ago with the Los Angeles Chargers. He's a free agent.
- 6:14Speaker 2: He could be a good fit for New Orleans and
- 6:16Speaker 2: Brandon Stey's defense as they lose pulse and evil here
- 6:19Speaker 2: this offseason. On the offensive side, I think a lot
- 6:22Speaker 2: of it is going to be trying to shore up
- 6:24Speaker 2: your offensive line, you know, waiting to see if maybe
- 6:27Speaker 2: the big splash signing that they make ends up happening
- 6:30Speaker 2: on the offensive line, which is a spot that makes
- 6:32Speaker 2: sense with a new starter needed at left guard. So
- 6:34Speaker 2: those are kind of the positions that I would watch
- 6:36Speaker 2: out for the most. And I expect that they'll continue
- 6:38Speaker 2: to address an add talent to their wide receiver in
- 6:40Speaker 2: tight ends room stuff.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And maybe no surprise, as we all expected that this
- 6:45Speaker 1: was going to come to pass, the Saints do, in
- 6:47Speaker 1: fact restructure Derek Carr's contract. So tell us what we
- 6:52Speaker 1: need to know with respect to the car restructure and
- 6:55Speaker 1: what that means for the Saints here in this offseason.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Yeah, there's kind of three big things that this tells you.
- 7:00Speaker 2: The first of which is kind of the biggest thing,
- 7:02Speaker 2: which is that Derek Carr is expected to be the
- 7:04Speaker 2: starting quarterback in twenty twenty five. We've kind of known
- 7:06Speaker 2: that would be the case. That's what Mickey Lomis and
- 7:09Speaker 2: Kevin Moore and others told us in Indianapolis, but the
- 7:12Speaker 2: restructure just kind of solidifies that. The second piece to
- 7:15Speaker 2: this is that, you know, people want to know what
- 7:17Speaker 2: does this mean for the future at quarterback. I don't
- 7:19Speaker 2: think that committing to Derek Carr here in twenty twenty
- 7:22Speaker 2: five means that this team precludes itself from being able
- 7:25Speaker 2: to go out there or excuse me, excludes itself from
- 7:28Speaker 2: being able to go out there and sign or rather draft,
- 7:31Speaker 2: even a young quarterback if there is a place where
- 7:35Speaker 2: that value makes sense. So I don't think that it
- 7:37Speaker 2: closes the door on that. And then the second thing
- 7:39Speaker 2: is what does this mean? Or the third thing is
- 7:41Speaker 2: what does this mean for the same moving into twenty
- 7:43Speaker 2: twenty six. Restructuring him here in twenty twenty five does
- 7:46Speaker 2: not marry you to him in twenty twenty six. It
- 7:49Speaker 2: would probably necessitate a post June one release if the
- 7:52Speaker 2: two were to part ways after this season, that would
- 7:54Speaker 2: end up putting nineteen million dollars of dead cap as
- 7:57Speaker 2: opposed to fifteen million dot fifty nine million dollars of
- 7:59Speaker 2: dead caap in twenty twenty six. So that would be
- 8:02Speaker 2: a big move to watch for after the season. But
- 8:04Speaker 2: I think the Saints are going to focus on seeing
- 8:06Speaker 2: what they can do at the position now during this
- 8:08Speaker 2: year in terms of building around Derek Carr and trying
- 8:11Speaker 2: to find some success here in twenty twenty five.
- 8:13Speaker 1: All right, Ross Jackson, Of course, you can read it

- 8:32Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
