Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: My name is Henry.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm the singer of Boston Manor, and we have a
- 0:24Speaker 2: new record coming out in two weeks. Rushall when this
- 0:27Speaker 2: is coming out, but September sixth. It's called sun Diver,
- 0:31Speaker 2: and we're very, very excited about it. We've been working
- 0:33Speaker 2: on this record for kind of like four years really,
- 0:36Speaker 2: which is crazy to think about. So it's pretty surreal
- 0:39Speaker 2: t habit coming out there in the world. But yeah,
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'm excited to hear what people think of it.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yeah, look, thanks for joining us. Man let's you say,
- 0:47Speaker 3: Boston matter I said to drop your fist studio album,
- 0:49Speaker 3: Sundiver on September the sixth. You just said you've been
- 0:54Speaker 3: right for four years, mat So like in essence, you've
- 0:56Speaker 3: had a longer wait than usual to put the album
- 0:59Speaker 3: out Because of that long time, how do you feel
- 1:02Speaker 3: like you're anxiously You're nervous here, hate to get.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It out of the way, kind of a mix of
- 1:09Speaker 2: all free to be honest, mate, it's it's yeah, it
- 1:12Speaker 2: is weird having sat on a record for so long.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I've not done that before. But you know, usually six
- 1:18Speaker 2: months or whatever you get into the whole roll out
- 1:20Speaker 2: thing and yeahd YadA YadA. But with this one, we've
- 1:24Speaker 2: had the mixes or an early version of the mixed
- 1:27Speaker 2: done for almost a year now, so we've been sitting
- 1:29Speaker 2: with it for a minute, and I'm happy to say
- 1:32Speaker 2: that we're not bored of it yet. We really do
- 1:34Speaker 2: enjoy listening to this record, and I am just quite
- 1:40Speaker 2: keen to kind of get it out there. We've just
- 1:42Speaker 2: started playing some of the songs from the record live,
- 1:45Speaker 2: which is really refreshing and super fun. And yeah, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: it's obviously part of a double album concept with our
- 1:51Speaker 2: previous records, so we put a lot into into all
- 1:55Speaker 2: that and the kind of concept stuff and the world building.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm kind of keen to just just let
- 2:01Speaker 1: people hear it.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Really. So you mentioned the fact that Sundiver is the
- 2:06Speaker 3: accompanying musical piece to twenty twenty two Days, So explain
- 2:10Speaker 3: the connection between the albums.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Yeah, there were They will always kind of conceived as
- 2:15Speaker 4: one project, one follows on from the other one conceptually,
- 2:19Speaker 4: and the tour is this kind of like dark, kind
- 2:21Speaker 4: of SYNTHI record that kind of takes place over one
- 2:24Speaker 4: night and ends with kind of the bird song of
- 2:29Speaker 4: like Daybreak and the toura starts Sorry, sun Diver starts
- 2:33Speaker 4: with the exact same sample and kind of goes into
- 2:37Speaker 4: this kind of bright, kind of blistering sunshine and kind
- 2:40Speaker 4: of takes place in the following day.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Really, so it kind of works on a few levels
- 2:44Speaker 2: the concept of it, you know, and you can kind
- 2:47Speaker 2: of get into it as much or as little as
- 2:49Speaker 2: you want to as a listener.
- 2:51Speaker 1: We kind of.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Just made it so that you can kind of enjoy
- 2:55Speaker 2: them as self contained albums singles if you want, or
- 3:00Speaker 2: you can kind of listen to the whole thing as
- 3:01Speaker 2: a as a big double record.
- 3:03Speaker 1: If you you know, you've got an hour and a
- 3:05Speaker 1: half spare.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Also tell us a bit more about Sandiva from a
- 3:10Speaker 3: musical point of view, then made when you're going through
- 3:12Speaker 3: that side.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yeah, we so going back to that kind of concept thing.
- 3:17Speaker 2: We were trying to get this kind of sound of
- 3:19Speaker 2: like blistering sunshine without it kind of coming across as
- 3:24Speaker 2: like happy sounding, if that makes sense, or cheerful or whatnot,
- 3:28Speaker 2: because we want to make an uplifting record, but we
- 3:30Speaker 2: still kind of wanted to make a gnarly guitar record,
- 3:33Speaker 2: and those two things were quite hard pairing to marry, really,
- 3:36Speaker 2: so we spent a long time trying to get this
- 3:39Speaker 2: guitar sound and this sort of like a melodic language
- 3:44Speaker 2: really that we could kind of consistently use there would
- 3:47Speaker 2: also make it like a cohesive record that felt like
- 3:49Speaker 2: one body of work as opposed to a playlist of tunes.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And you know, I got to give credit to the
- 3:56Speaker 2: guitarists in our band for doing that really, but it
- 3:58Speaker 2: it is a big guitar.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Record that was kind of one thing that we set
- 4:03Speaker 1: out to achieve.
- 4:04Speaker 2: We put a lot of work into the tour and
- 4:07Speaker 2: it kind of had this kind of shadowy after hours
- 4:10Speaker 2: sort of feeling to it, and we wanted this record
- 4:12Speaker 2: to be a bit of a love letter to the
- 4:13Speaker 2: guitar so.
- 4:14Speaker 1: We even built I say we.
- 4:18Speaker 2: That they built a guitar pedal for for this album
- 4:23Speaker 2: specifically and just to get this kind of sound they
- 4:26Speaker 2: were trying to trying to make. And yeah, so they
- 4:28Speaker 2: worked on that for a long time with a with
- 4:30Speaker 2: a wicked pedal company called Life is Unfair Audio, and
- 4:34Speaker 2: it turned out so great that they actually have it
- 4:37Speaker 2: up for pre order.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Now if you want to buy one, which is pretty cool.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But it made it, you know, it was it was
- 4:42Speaker 2: it was a key piece of the puzzle and was
- 4:44Speaker 2: on every track pretty much on the record, and we
- 4:47Speaker 2: use it live now as well.
- 4:48Speaker 3: That's right now, it's a conclusion of that storyline. Is
- 4:52Speaker 3: it just a two part series?
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we're not going to do a third. It's
- 4:57Speaker 2: it's uh, you know, to two book ends.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Really, So is the next one going to be similar lives?
- 5:04Speaker 3: Is it going to be conceptual like that or is
- 5:06Speaker 3: it going to be just random songs?
- 5:10Speaker 5: Random?
- 5:10Speaker 1: So? I don't know, to tell you the truth. I mean,
- 5:13Speaker 1: it's hard to look that far down the road. You know.
- 5:15Speaker 2: We've we put out so many records in such a
- 5:17Speaker 2: short space of time now, like with this double album,
- 5:19Speaker 2: and we did an EP before it, and that's all
- 5:21Speaker 2: since the pandemic. So we're kind of been in the
- 5:23Speaker 2: studio a whole lot for the last like three or
- 5:25Speaker 2: four years. So I don't think we're going to kind
- 5:28Speaker 2: of put out a record in such quick succession. We're
- 5:31Speaker 2: going to kind of take some time to tour and
- 5:33Speaker 2: see how we feel in a year or two. But
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, with our band, we're kind of always mixing
- 5:38Speaker 2: it up and trying new things, So I imagine it
- 5:42Speaker 2: will be a kind of another take on it. I
- 5:45Speaker 2: don't know where we'll go with it. And we like
- 5:48Speaker 2: being kind of conceptual, you know. We kind of did
- 5:50Speaker 2: that on our second album, Welcome to the Neighborhood, And
- 5:54Speaker 2: I feel like concert records don't always have to be
- 5:55Speaker 2: this kind of dense body of work with like characters
- 5:59Speaker 2: and places and stuff and and.
- 6:03Speaker 1: You know scenes. It could kind of be as loose
- 6:05Speaker 1: as a kind of I don't know, just a blue
- 6:09Speaker 1: line that runs through the album, you know.
- 6:11Speaker 2: So so in that, in that sense, there's every chance
- 6:14Speaker 2: that we could do, you know, more conceptual stuff. I
- 6:17Speaker 2: think we learn a lot about how to make records
- 6:20Speaker 2: feel cohesive and and kind of all work together as
- 6:24Speaker 2: one piece.
- 6:25Speaker 1: That that's something that took a long time to get
- 6:27Speaker 1: on this record.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So even if we don't do anything except on the
- 6:30Speaker 2: next one, I would love to make I think it's
- 6:32Speaker 2: a good important thing to us to make sure that
- 6:35Speaker 2: it feels cohesive as a project.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you're almost finished. A run of Australia Days with
- 6:41Speaker 3: Trophy Eyes at the moment help help the being go on.
- 6:45Speaker 2: So sick man, We love this country so much, like
- 6:48Speaker 2: we genuinely feel so blessed to be able to come
- 6:51Speaker 2: and play shows here and these ones have been no exception,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and it's been really nice to see that band do
- 6:56Speaker 2: such big things in their home turf.
- 6:58Speaker 1: We we talked pretty much all the world.
- 7:00Speaker 2: With them at this point, and it's it's really nice
- 7:03Speaker 2: to see them in their yeah, in their in their
- 7:06Speaker 2: home cities, doing doing massive gigs. And and then yeah,
- 7:09Speaker 2: we get to return the favor and in a few
- 7:12Speaker 2: weeks and they're coming playing some shows. Was in the UK,
- 7:14Speaker 2: so that's really nice, and you know, they're good friends
- 7:16Speaker 2: of us, so it's just great to be back on
- 7:18Speaker 2: the road with them.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Really. Yeah, have you been playing much of sand Diver
- 7:21Speaker 3: Lives White a bit?
- 7:24Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 7:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:24Speaker 2: We we've done a few little headlines shows in like
- 7:28Speaker 2: small cities in between the Trophy Eyes gigs. We did
- 7:31Speaker 2: one last nime, We've got one tomorrow in Geelong, and
- 7:34Speaker 2: we've been kind of experimenting with some of the new
- 7:37Speaker 2: Sun Diver tracks on those shows, which has been really
- 7:40Speaker 2: fun because they're like kind of the first time that
- 7:43Speaker 2: we've been able to play them, and they're in like
- 7:45Speaker 2: small rooms and at this point, you know, the people
- 7:49Speaker 2: haven't even heard the records, so they don't know these
- 7:52Speaker 2: are completely new songs.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So it's it's cool to kind of get an unbiased.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Kind of reaction to songs that they've never heard before,
- 7:59Speaker 2: which we've never had.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We've never had the opportunity to do that before, so
- 8:01Speaker 1: that's been really enjoyable.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Before we let you go, mate, we started doing a
- 8:05Speaker 3: new segment talk photo bombs here on Heavy, So just
- 8:08Speaker 3: involves me digging through the archives and finding some bands,
- 8:11Speaker 3: some photos and bands, and I'm going to show them
- 8:13Speaker 3: to you and you can tell me what's going on. Okay,
- 8:17Speaker 3: all right, So the first one I've got is this one.
- 8:22Speaker 3: That's some serious fucking hair you've got going on.
- 8:24Speaker 1: There, bro, Thanks man.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And that's when I used to wear my really heavy
- 8:28Speaker 2: dot Martins on stage as well, so they I probably
- 8:30Speaker 2: would have gotten a little higher if I had from
- 8:32Speaker 2: that footwear, I'm to be honest, but yeah, judging by
- 8:36Speaker 2: the red light in the corner and the red battle
- 8:39Speaker 2: club on the drum kit, that's the welcome to the
- 8:41Speaker 2: neighborhood here.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So I would have been.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Twenty eighteen, and I think that venue is in.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Bristol.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I want to go on a lemon and say Bristol
- 8:52Speaker 2: UK would be my best guess right.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Look looking through your photos, bro, there's so many action
- 8:57Speaker 3: shots of you on stage, like you must run like
- 9:00Speaker 3: a motherfucker.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:02Speaker 7: I need to kind of chill that out a bit, man,
- 9:04Speaker 7: because I just get out of breath really easily.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm getting older as well. So we started, you know,
- 9:10Speaker 1: we've always like a very active live abandon.
- 9:12Speaker 7: We started off in like pubs, just playing like five people,
- 9:14Speaker 7: so you can't you didn't have any like lights or
- 9:19Speaker 7: or you know, production value, so you just kind of
- 9:21Speaker 7: had to get people hyped by jumping around like an idiot.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So I guess that's never really left me, to be honest.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I got one more photo for you. I
- 9:31Speaker 3: just want to know what the fuck is that on
- 9:33Speaker 3: the roofmate, Like it looks like an alien being but
- 9:36Speaker 3: no one's actually even looking at it.
- 9:38Speaker 1: It's scary as shit. Yeah, it looks like something morphing
- 9:44Speaker 1: out of the ceiling.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Comedy.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know that's my band.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Though, Who is that?
- 9:51Speaker 3: I've got it off your Facebook page.
- 9:55Speaker 1: That's no. No one on the stages in my band.
- 10:00Speaker 3: On the weather's bed, that is what the fuck you
- 10:01Speaker 3: think that is up there?
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:04Speaker 1: It looks like a reflection like a weird mirrored ceiling
- 10:06Speaker 1: or something. Yeah, it's cool.
- 10:11Speaker 3: It's not as cool as that band then, mate.
- 10:17Speaker 5: All right, Henry, thanks very.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Much for your time, but it's been a pleasure speaking
- 10:19Speaker 3: with you. Sun Diver is out September sixth. I believe
- 10:23Speaker 3: the Voice have got two shows that I ain't coming
- 10:26Speaker 3: up in Adelaide on August thirtieth and Melbourne on August
- 10:28Speaker 3: thirty first. So where can people get old the tickets
- 10:31Speaker 3: to them?
- 10:34Speaker 1: I guess just Google? Man, I'm not I'm not totally
- 10:36Speaker 1: sure with you, but I don't know it. I think
- 10:39Speaker 1: one of them's still got tickets left. I think I
- 10:41Speaker 1: think Melbourne.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Might be sold out actually, but I think Adelaide sat
- 10:44Speaker 2: got some tickets left. So I'm also going to plug
- 10:47Speaker 2: my favorite restaurant in Adelaide, Dumpling's Planet. I had it
- 10:50Speaker 2: the last time I went there, and I've been obsessed
- 10:52Speaker 2: with it ever since. So if you're an Adelaide local
- 10:54Speaker 2: and you haven't tried that.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Place, you've got to check it out. Dumplings Planets. I'm
- 10:58Speaker 1: going to be there on there Saday web Day is Friday.
- 11:02Speaker 3: That place is get out to put off the full house.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Now everyone's gonna turn up the home.
- 11:05Speaker 1: So yeah, man definitely.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Skin as a policy. You told me up.
- 11:36Speaker 8: Any man who was shock could see what she saw
- 11:48Speaker 8: feeling and love foods.
- 11:52Speaker 9: You can all these as that you make and sense
- 11:57Speaker 9: that you show me someone you arties, you could.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I keep you in that I could.
- 12:30Speaker 9: See through killbody if you ever rest me.
- 12:35Speaker 5: So show me audience and so you try to fix
- 12:46Speaker 5: it so its beautiful. You shry replace it and play
- 12:52Speaker 5: say replacement. Let's yourself and he could.
- 13:05Speaker 6: Give so.
- 13:11Speaker 5: And ting so.
- 13:20Speaker 2: It could.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Coping that So show orgos.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Change any crew.
- 14:05Speaker 5: You don't you think that so I need crow? Don't
- 14:15Speaker 5: you think so I need crew? Don't you think your
- 14:25Speaker 5: soul
- 14:30Speaker 6: Kill me
