Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Another season of sport, another season of sideline abuse. Police
- 0:04Speaker 1: have revealed they're still investigating a serious assault on a
- 0:07Speaker 1: female football coach from September. The Elsie IF volunteer was
- 0:11Speaker 1: attacked by an opposing male supporter following an under ten's game.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Laura Menzies is the Northern Region Football chief executive. She's
- 0:19Speaker 1: with us this morning.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning, good morning.
- 0:22Speaker 1: How is that coach doing? Do you know.
- 0:26Speaker 2: The last I heard she was, The last I heard
- 0:28Speaker 2: she was recovering at home. I mean, there's no doubt
- 0:31Speaker 2: that's a completely shocking incident that should shock us in
- 0:34Speaker 2: any example that our never mind a football game.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Is this thing happening more and more? Or that these
- 0:40Speaker 1: a one off?
- 0:43Speaker 2: I mean there's a huge spectrum when we talk about
- 0:45Speaker 2: sideline behavior. Somebody attacking somebody on the sideline as an
- 0:50Speaker 2: absolute extreme, which happens in very few circumstances. Certainly not
- 0:54Speaker 2: condoning the behavior in the slightest because it should never happen.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But no, this kind of thing is extreme, has happened
- 1:00Speaker 2: very rarely.
- 1:02Speaker 1: She was noted unconscious apparently. I mean, it's just terrible,
- 1:05Speaker 1: isn't it. Oh?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Absolutely, that absolutely is terrible, And I think the thing
- 1:09Speaker 2: is that kind of behavior wouldn't be okay if you're
- 1:11Speaker 2: at the supermarket or the bank or anywhere else in society.
- 1:14Speaker 2: There's not anywhere in our society where we allow someone
- 1:16Speaker 2: to go up to somebody else and knock them unconscious.
- 1:19Speaker 2: You know, That's why we have laws of the country.
- 1:21Speaker 2: There's no way that behavior is in any circumstances, is
- 1:24Speaker 2: even the slightest bit appropriate? Is it?
- 1:27Speaker 1: The parents? I mean, can you ban and I know
- 1:29Speaker 1: you shouldn't take your anger out on the kids or
- 1:32Speaker 1: you know the punishment had on the kids, But do
- 1:34Speaker 1: you look at banning kids whose parents behave like that?
- 1:37Speaker 2: We don't generally ban the kids, but yes we can.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I mean, we do have a disciplinary code, we do
- 1:42Speaker 2: have a code of conduct part of me as a sport.
- 1:45Speaker 2: And absolutely it is possible to own to ban parents
- 1:49Speaker 2: according to their behavior because in most cases, yes it's
- 1:52Speaker 2: in most cases it is the parents or it is
- 1:54Speaker 2: sideline people are not always parents of kids. But yes
- 1:57Speaker 2: we can, we can take action against parents.
- 2:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, hopefully this particular coach is recovering. Well.
