- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh man, it's been a minute since we caught up
- 0:02Speaker 1: with this guy. And I gotta tell you, when his
- 0:04Speaker 1: name pops up on the calendar, I get excited. Man,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Cody Johnson's.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Here, y'all, let's go what I'm talking about?
- 0:08Speaker 3: Dude? Uh? How was do you sleep good?
- 0:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 0:12Speaker 3: Oh?
- 0:13Speaker 4: Look you there.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Listen just we're doing this interview at noon, so there's
- 0:16Speaker 2: a cocktail. Yeah, I slept good. I was late, I swear,
- 0:20Speaker 2: I just swear. I looked over and it had the
- 0:22Speaker 2: green button, which means I didn't push yeah snooze. I
- 0:24Speaker 2: didn't turn it off. It just didn't go off. And
- 0:27Speaker 2: it's the scariest thing in the world is when Noe
- 0:28Speaker 2: busted your door at nine o'clock, I'm like, what what happened?
- 0:31Speaker 4: He's like, bro, it's nine o'clock.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah. So, like that was the quickest I've ever showered
- 0:34Speaker 2: and got dressed in my life.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Are you a good napper? Like? Can you are?
- 0:38Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Like I'm somewhat of a professional.
- 0:40Speaker 3: The problem is if I nap, I'll wake up.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Like if I nap and I have stuff to do,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I'm groggy for like an hour.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I man, I've gotten to where I just listen to
- 0:49Speaker 2: my body. Yeah, And I mean there's certain days where
- 0:51Speaker 2: I know, like if I wake up like out a
- 0:52Speaker 2: habit at like seven or eight o'clock in the morning
- 0:55Speaker 2: and I look at what I've got to do that day,
- 0:56Speaker 2: I'm like, no, No, today's the day.
- 0:58Speaker 4: I'm gonna sleep till noon. Like nobody gonna miss me.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I'm good And I've just learned to like like on days,
- 1:04Speaker 2: on show days, if I don't have interviews and I
- 1:06Speaker 2: don't have man, I'm just gonna go take a nap.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Like what's it gonna hurt?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Because like, we keep the schedule the way we keep it,
- 1:11Speaker 2: and it can be hard on you if you don't
- 1:12Speaker 2: take time to just let your body chill.
- 1:15Speaker 3: What is a show day like?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Because obviously, let's say you don't have interviews, and let's
- 1:20Speaker 1: say it's let's say you're doing three dates, three shows
- 1:24Speaker 1: in four or five days.
- 1:26Speaker 3: What's that second show the second night?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Like usually so, like say if we were doing a
- 1:30Speaker 2: three show deal, I would probably be flying in the
- 1:33Speaker 2: morning of show for the first show, skip soundcheck. There's
- 1:37Speaker 2: usually interviews and stuff like that. You know, you got
- 1:40Speaker 2: radio room, you got meet and greet, and you knock
- 1:41Speaker 2: it out. The first of three shows is not I
- 1:44Speaker 2: won't say conservative, but I'm very conscious.
- 1:47Speaker 4: On stage that I have two more to go.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Okay, It's like being in the second quarter, like you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: you've got third and fourth quarter coming up yep. And
- 1:53Speaker 2: then like the next day is my precaution day, Like
- 1:56Speaker 2: I don't really talk. I don't come out of my bus.
- 1:58Speaker 2: If I do, it's like I may work out, you know,
- 2:01Speaker 2: just get out and move a little bit, take a shower,
- 2:03Speaker 2: chill on the bus, and not really do anything.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Maybe read a book or watch a little TV. Just chill.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And then Saturday, depending on how I feel when I
- 2:11Speaker 2: wake up as far as like my voice, it could
- 2:14Speaker 2: be like a really chill day.
- 2:15Speaker 4: If I'm really oh man.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Like my throat's a little sore or I'm feeling it,
- 2:19Speaker 2: you know, then I'm really conservative. If I'm not, I'm like, okay,
- 2:22Speaker 2: now it's time to burn Saturday night down, Like let's
- 2:25Speaker 2: just go all out, and I generally go have fun.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Like I've got a segue, a rope and dummy and
- 2:29Speaker 2: a scooter and all kinds of stuff on the bus
- 2:31Speaker 2: that we just go fun with. Dude, I can rope
- 2:34Speaker 2: the dummy off the segwae Ken you it's very dangerous.
- 2:37Speaker 1: That's one thing that I love to mention anytime we're
- 2:39Speaker 1: playing one of your records on the radio. Is I
- 2:41Speaker 1: talk about like not only your love and respect for
- 2:44Speaker 1: the Rodeo, but your involvement in the Rodeo as well.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And obviously you're a big fan of NFR. That's normally
- 2:51Speaker 1: when you play Vegas the most, right, it's like you're
- 2:53Speaker 1: saving time to get to Vegas.
- 2:55Speaker 4: I am.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So this year we've got a golf tournament in Vegas.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Cheer golf tournament that we did last year was a
- 3:01Speaker 2: huge success. We raised I want to say, upwards of
- 3:04Speaker 2: like three hundred and fifty thousand dollars for charity. And
- 3:07Speaker 2: then the next day I started the World Series Team
- 3:10Speaker 2: Rope and Finale at South Point, and I'll rope the
- 3:13Speaker 2: next day. I'll rope in the thirteen and a half,
- 3:15Speaker 2: then the twelve and a half, the eleven and a half,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and then the ten and a half, and then the
- 3:18Speaker 2: day of the ten and a half rope and I
- 3:20Speaker 2: have to move to the MGM to go play my
- 3:22Speaker 2: show that night and then play the next show the
- 3:24Speaker 2: next day and then go home.
- 3:26Speaker 4: It's gonna be It's gonna be awesome.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Is that like?
- 3:29Speaker 1: Is that so for people that don't know NFR, it's
- 3:32Speaker 1: the super Bowl of National Finals Road and it's ten
- 3:36Speaker 1: days in Vegas, and I mean the amount of people
- 3:38Speaker 1: that roll through Vegas.
- 3:39Speaker 3: And first of all, if you ain't wearing a cowboy hat,
- 3:41Speaker 3: you were out of place those ten days. Absolutely, that's
- 3:43Speaker 3: for damn sure.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 1: But is that like the time your wife goes, Okay,
- 3:47Speaker 1: this is this is the weekend you get out of
- 3:50Speaker 1: the year to be twenty five year old Cody Johnson
- 3:53Speaker 1: again and then shake it off and get home.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Well, there's this thing called the Taos Bakiros that I
- 3:59Speaker 2: do every year. That's what this tattoo is on my hand.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I know that said tattoo. We're gonna get to a
- 4:02Speaker 2: trust me. I've already got an.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Idea for you.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I got But the Tails Fuck Caros is one week
- 4:07Speaker 2: of the year there's no cell phones receptions out in
- 4:09Speaker 2: West Texas. It's kind of a kind of a cowboy
- 4:12Speaker 2: fraternity in Texas. And all I do is rodeo every
- 4:16Speaker 2: day and announce Rodeo and then we have like pa
- 4:19Speaker 2: like booming voice, like I've got the microphone, and it's uh,
- 4:23Speaker 2: there's three rules. There's no pictures, no women, and no fighting. Okay,
- 4:27Speaker 2: So when I get on a microphone, I'm very, very brutal, like,
- 4:31Speaker 2: don't let me find out any of your personal information
- 4:33Speaker 2: because I'm gonna roast you on the microphone. And it's
- 4:36Speaker 2: like it's like no rules, microphone, And I look forward
- 4:39Speaker 2: to it every year. Like, for instance, there was a
- 4:42Speaker 2: guy that came into the arena this year and he
- 4:44Speaker 2: was wearing khakis, Like who wears khakis, you know, like
- 4:48Speaker 2: unless you're an office setting, and so like for the
- 4:50Speaker 2: rest of the week he was only like I didn't
- 4:52Speaker 2: announce his name at all.
- 4:53Speaker 4: He was only Jake from State Farm.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Or he could have been sponsored by Cole's Good Now
- 5:00Speaker 1: coming to the ring wearing this kakis, he breastfed tell
- 5:02Speaker 1: he was eight Michael.
- 5:04Speaker 2: All right, we're getting you out there next year. I'm
- 5:06Speaker 2: gonna get you out there next year. Wayne D's guest
- 5:08Speaker 2: appearing in the announcers.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Both take me through because because Vegas is special for
- 5:15Speaker 1: a lot of artists, it's different for you because of NFR.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Has there ever been talk about a residency? And I mean,
- 5:23Speaker 1: don't get me wrong. I know you've done a couple
- 5:24Speaker 1: of shows and a couple of nights, but I'm talking
- 5:26Speaker 1: like a true put you up at a at one
- 5:29Speaker 1: of the hotel venues play their amphitheater. You know.
- 5:33Speaker 2: There hasn't been really been talks about it, but I've
- 5:35Speaker 2: thought about it, you know, like as uh like so say,
- 5:38Speaker 2: like Cmas are coming up, Like what if we just
- 5:40Speaker 2: sweep these awards?
- 5:41Speaker 4: You know what that does?
- 5:42Speaker 2: I mean the ripple effect of stuff like that as
- 5:44Speaker 2: the career grows and as my children grow. I think
- 5:49Speaker 2: that at some point, because I've seen Miranda do it,
- 5:51Speaker 2: you know, and Carrie's done it. There's a few other
- 5:52Speaker 2: you know. I think Aldine did a residency, didn't he.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah he did. I think he did like a five
- 5:57Speaker 3: dates and ten nights.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Do you think what it do is it would alleviate
- 6:01Speaker 2: some of the stress of like traveling to where like, hey,
- 6:03Speaker 2: I'm just gonna go do these you guys can come
- 6:05Speaker 2: to me for a little while. So yeah, I think maybe,
- 6:07Speaker 2: like eventually it would be pretty something cool to do,
- 6:10Speaker 2: especially since like I've never done it. I think it'd
- 6:12Speaker 2: be awesome and it'd be really cool to play the
- 6:14Speaker 2: same venue over and over with different people.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I think that's awesome too.
- 6:17Speaker 1: It's funny because we got to Keith Urban did his
- 6:20Speaker 1: first residency like I want to say, like six seven
- 6:22Speaker 1: years ago, and we got to ask him like, what's
- 6:23Speaker 1: it like, Like what's it like? And why did it
- 6:25Speaker 1: take you so long to adventure? Here he goes, it's
- 6:28Speaker 1: not playing the same room. I'd get bored as hell.
- 6:31Speaker 2: To me, no, no, no, no, there's no load in,
- 6:33Speaker 2: there's no load out, Like it's the same feeling, but
- 6:36Speaker 2: different people.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I think it would be awesome.
- 6:38Speaker 3: But I met your crew.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Even though there isn't a load in or a load out,
- 6:40Speaker 1: their hands are still going to be out daily, right.
- 6:44Speaker 3: No offense, guys, that's true.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 6:48Speaker 1: When it comes to the rodeo, we were catching up
- 6:50Speaker 1: with Fabiano here a couple of minutes ago, and you
- 6:53Speaker 1: just played a rodeo in Brazil.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Yeah, so the.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Largest rodeo in the world in Behaetos, and I was
- 7:01Speaker 2: doing all my media leading up to it, and so
- 7:04Speaker 2: I this is just me being a stupid kid from Texas.
- 7:07Speaker 4: I thought, like Spanish, it is not Spanish, it is.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Portuguese, and oh I would have I would have got sis.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I tripped all over myself because then they started talking
- 7:16Speaker 2: to me and I'm.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Like, I have no clue what this person just he
- 7:20Speaker 3: goes oh line and they're like.
- 7:22Speaker 2: No, no, don't say oh uh, grassius does not work. Okay,
- 7:26Speaker 2: but here's the problem. So I'm doing all my media
- 7:29Speaker 2: and I was like, they were like, oh, don't worry.
- 7:32Speaker 2: English is a very well taught second language in Brazil.
- 7:35Speaker 2: You know English this and English that. And I was like, okay,
- 7:37Speaker 2: so I'm gonna be good, like they'll at least be
- 7:39Speaker 2: able to understand a little bit of what I'm saying. Really,
- 7:42Speaker 2: how many people it was like fifty thousand people, fifty
- 7:45Speaker 2: thousand people in the stadium, and I noticed like whenever
- 7:48Speaker 2: I would say something besides singing, when I would say something,
- 7:51Speaker 2: everybody just kind of looked at me.
- 7:52Speaker 4: And I went, how many of y'all speak English?
- 7:55Speaker 2: And ten people raise their hands, And I was like,
- 7:59Speaker 2: I want to find the interview people and be like
- 8:01Speaker 2: you lie in sons of bit like like nobody spoke English.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I'd be like, are you all ready to party?
- 8:06Speaker 4: And they went and I'm going, oh, like this is
- 8:10Speaker 4: gonna be bad.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Man.
- 8:11Speaker 2: So they knew all the words of the songs.
- 8:13Speaker 3: And that's what I was gonna ask. Do they still
- 8:15Speaker 3: sing along?
- 8:16Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 8:17Speaker 2: And I actually saw, well that's I very rarely pay
- 8:19Speaker 2: attention to social media. But afterward the fact on that
- 8:22Speaker 2: when I was like, I need to know whether that
- 8:23Speaker 2: was just the worst thing that ever happened to me
- 8:25Speaker 2: or not. And like some of the comments were like,
- 8:28Speaker 2: we had no idea what he said, but his passion
- 8:30Speaker 2: and this and that, like we loved it. You know,
- 8:32Speaker 2: he was very entertaining and so cool to hear somebody
- 8:35Speaker 2: talking and singing in a different language. And I was like, okay,
- 8:37Speaker 2: so it went over well, But dude, it was insane.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I've been to a lot of rodeos. I've never seen
- 8:43Speaker 2: anything like that. It was nuts, Like Houston Rodeo is
- 8:46Speaker 2: small compared to this thing.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And that's which is nuts, because Houston Rodeo is iconic,
- 8:50Speaker 3: like that.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Le Shy in Frontier Days has nothing on this thing.
- 8:53Speaker 4: It was huge. I've never seen anything like it.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I was just talking to one of the members of
- 8:59Speaker 1: your record label, and you're getting ready to play your
- 9:02Speaker 1: first massive stadium show.
- 9:04Speaker 3: In the US right in Texas.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yea, in Arlington.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Is that wild to you? To think that that's where
- 9:08Speaker 3: you're at now.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Shoot, that's been That's what been the goal the whole time.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Like I've been wanting that and wanting it, like I
- 9:14Speaker 2: can't wait for it because for me, like you know me,
- 9:17Speaker 2: like I'm pretty competitive, very driven for me, like I'm
- 9:20Speaker 2: walking in that door going Okay, I'm gonna prove to
- 9:23Speaker 2: everybody that I can do this. I'm gonna prove to
- 9:24Speaker 2: everybody that I deserve to be here. All you poll
- 9:27Speaker 2: stars just watch, you know, Like that's that's kind of
- 9:29Speaker 2: my mentality of it. But it's also like it's very
- 9:33Speaker 2: fitting that it's in Texas, kind of a homecoming. I
- 9:35Speaker 2: haven't got to play in Texas very much, just because
- 9:38Speaker 2: we've been going all over the place, all over the world,
- 9:40Speaker 2: and so to get to go back home and have
- 9:42Speaker 2: the first big stadium show is pretty damn special.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Well, And to be honest, the way the Cowboys are playing,
- 9:47Speaker 3: this might be the best show that this year.
- 9:54Speaker 2: The offense.
- 9:58Speaker 1: The the recent single on Country is with Carrie Underwood.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Tay and I were having a conversation about it yesterday.
- 10:04Speaker 1: It's so cool because country music is this more than ever,
- 10:07Speaker 1: is this melting pot, right and it's you do your
- 10:11Speaker 1: you do country your way, right, Carrie does country her way,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and then you got guys like Morgan Wallen doing it
- 10:16Speaker 1: his way. How how do you and Carrie end up
- 10:20Speaker 1: working together? And how does it make sense? Because you're
- 10:22Speaker 1: not a guy that that dips your tone in the
- 10:24Speaker 1: colladpool right right?
- 10:25Speaker 3: So how did that? How how did it come to be?
- 10:28Speaker 3: And how are you like, yeah, this is the one.
- 10:29Speaker 2: So this is a pretty interesting story. Travis Dinning, We've
- 10:33Speaker 2: known each other probably almost let's.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Say, eight ten years.
- 10:35Speaker 3: He's crazy underrated, by the way, so underrated.
- 10:38Speaker 2: So, like I forget how long ago it was before
- 10:40Speaker 2: the Human album came out. Travis was actually out on
- 10:43Speaker 2: the road with us and he played this song for
- 10:45Speaker 2: me and I was like, man, can I is there
- 10:48Speaker 2: any way I can get that song?
- 10:49Speaker 4: Like I love this song?
- 10:51Speaker 2: And Universal said, you know, basically that's going to be
- 10:53Speaker 2: Travis's next single, and so I just let it go.
- 10:55Speaker 2: You know, congratulations, man, you got one hell of a song.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And I don't know what happened it didn't come out
- 11:00Speaker 2: as his single. Unbeknownst to me, he pitched the song
- 11:03Speaker 2: to Carrie and it wound up in her pile didn't
- 11:07Speaker 2: make the cut on her album, so it goes back
- 11:08Speaker 2: out into the abyss, so to speak.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Well, when we were cutting leather, I was like, what
- 11:12Speaker 4: happened to that song?
- 11:14Speaker 2: You know that I fell in love with it, I
- 11:15Speaker 2: never heard again, and they were like, oh, it's actually available.
- 11:18Speaker 4: I was like, well, put it on hold.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Well, then when I get it back and I start
- 11:22Speaker 2: listening to it again, I was like, dude, I hear Carrie.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I hear Carrie Underwood on this like crazy and.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Well I didn't know that.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I didn't know that, like at this point we met
- 11:32Speaker 2: in two thousand, I would think, like twenty twenty two,
- 11:35Speaker 2: I think in an award show. It just kind of
- 11:37Speaker 2: nice how are you?
- 11:37Speaker 3: Is?
- 11:37Speaker 2: And I told my wife that night, I was like, Yo,
- 11:39Speaker 2: she's like really nice, like really down to earth, Like
- 11:42Speaker 2: I enjoyed talking with her.
- 11:43Speaker 4: And you know, anyway, whenever I was like Carrie and.
- 11:46Speaker 2: An, you know, people on my team were like, well,
- 11:48Speaker 2: what about this person or what about that person, I'm like, no,
- 11:50Speaker 2: it's either Carrie Underwood or I'm not doing it. Like
- 11:53Speaker 2: I felt that strongly about it because I could already
- 11:55Speaker 2: hear it in my head. Yeah, So long story short,
- 11:57Speaker 2: it gets pitched to her. We'll get in the studio
- 11:59Speaker 2: and she's like, well, this is the second time the
- 12:01Speaker 2: song is coming into my life, and I'm like, what
- 12:02Speaker 2: are you talking about. She's like, I had this song,
- 12:05Speaker 2: but she's like, apparently everything happens for a reason, because now.
- 12:08Speaker 4: That it's with you, it makes sense to do it
- 12:09Speaker 4: as a duet.
- 12:10Speaker 2: And she told me she's like, two things I don't
- 12:12Speaker 2: do love songs and low register.
- 12:14Speaker 4: I was like, well, I got you to do it,
- 12:16Speaker 4: So I got carried to do a love.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Song and a low register. But doesn't her voice sound
- 12:19Speaker 2: great on it?
- 12:20Speaker 3: It's a whole different Carrie.
- 12:22Speaker 2: It's like a whole different side that sultry soft, almost
- 12:25Speaker 2: like sexy low man. It's crazy to like she has
- 12:27Speaker 2: had Aretha Franklin quality that I don't think anybody really realizes.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Is it tough to stay confident on a song after
- 12:36Speaker 1: you've heard other people turn it down? Are you like,
- 12:38Speaker 1: does any part of you think, well, what did what
- 12:40Speaker 1: did they hear that I'm not hearing.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Till you can't sat on the shelf for ten years?
- 12:45Speaker 2: So no, no, not at all, Like it doesn't matter
- 12:48Speaker 2: to me what other people do because like, I was
- 12:51Speaker 2: just at Dean Dylon's songwriter tribute last night in Alabama,
- 12:53Speaker 2: and I'm sitting in a room just for me to you,
- 12:56Speaker 2: and George Strait's doing his interviews and I'm next up
- 12:58Speaker 2: in the chair and sitting back, just chilling watching George
- 13:01Speaker 2: do this interview.
- 13:02Speaker 4: And they were talking about, uh, what was the song noe?
- 13:06Speaker 4: What was the song that it was?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Uh? He turned down Tennessee Whiskey. Dean pitched Tennessee Whiskey
- 13:14Speaker 2: to George first, and he was like, you know, it
- 13:16Speaker 2: wasn't for me. He's like, you know, and then George
- 13:18Speaker 2: Jones cuts it, and you know, David allen Coe and
- 13:21Speaker 2: then obviously Chris Stapleton like stamped this song forever. Yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 2: And he's like, man, if I had to cut that song,
- 13:26Speaker 2: my version of it would have probably been horrible and
- 13:28Speaker 2: not to ruin the song, you know what I mean? Like,
- 13:31Speaker 2: so it's it just because somebody turns it down doesn't
- 13:33Speaker 2: mean it's not It just means it's not for them, Dude.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I love That's what And I and I've gone back
- 13:38Speaker 1: and forth about this. I want to start a podcast
- 13:40Speaker 1: talking solely about.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Can be your first guess?
- 13:43Speaker 2: I do. It's like they told us, like we have
- 13:45Speaker 2: thirty minutes. I'm like, hey, dude, everybody else will wait?
- 13:47Speaker 3: Do wait?
- 13:48Speaker 2: Like I've been looking forward to this interview. I looked
- 13:50Speaker 2: through my interview page and I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, Wayne,
- 13:53Speaker 2: d Baby, here we go.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Anyway, dude, I appreciate that because I feel the same
- 13:56Speaker 3: exact way.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Uh.
- 13:57Speaker 1: But but I've been toying with this podcast idea because
- 14:00Speaker 1: the stories about songs and and what happened for somebody else,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and we've had amazing talent, just like yourself sit across here,
- 14:10Speaker 1: and uh, you know, Jason Eldan ended up with Big
- 14:13Speaker 1: Green Tractor.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Jake Owen passed on that.
- 14:15Speaker 1: And you're talking about George straight check yes or no.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Was pitched to Kenny Chesney first and Kenny said no,
- 14:20Speaker 1: And now it's a George.
- 14:22Speaker 4: But he regrets that.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yeah, well he's Yeah. Three boats and two beach houses later,
- 14:27Speaker 3: he's doing all right.
- 14:28Speaker 4: I think he owns an island.
- 14:31Speaker 1: The Kenny Coast. But but I just love stories about
- 14:35Speaker 1: songs like that. And I feel like we've talked before,
- 14:38Speaker 1: have there Because you're a guy who likes your hands
- 14:40Speaker 1: in the mud when it comes to anything you're putting
- 14:42Speaker 1: your voice on, but there has to be stuff that
- 14:44Speaker 1: you've been like, should have hung on to that one man.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Not really, you're gonna say no because.
- 14:51Speaker 4: You're here's what. No, it's not that. Here's what.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I'm not cutting the kind of songs anybody else's cutting.
- 14:58Speaker 2: So there's not really a whole lot of people in
- 15:00Speaker 2: their hands in the mud trying to get these songs.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Like Till You Can't was too much of a ballad.
- 15:04Speaker 2: You know, it didn't work, It's not gonna work on radio.
- 15:07Speaker 2: The Painter is just a you know, middle of the
- 15:10Speaker 2: road love song. And it's like, I'm I'm picking these
- 15:13Speaker 2: songs that nobody else is because everybody else is chasing
- 15:16Speaker 2: the ambulance. I think, in a way, I got to
- 15:18Speaker 2: get a number one hit. I gotta get this, I
- 15:20Speaker 2: gotta get that, dude.
- 15:21Speaker 4: I don't care.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I just want to I want to record songs that
- 15:24Speaker 2: mean something to me that I can go out and
- 15:26Speaker 2: I can play for my fans, that actually mean something.
- 15:29Speaker 2: And so I think, whenever you're looking at it from
- 15:30Speaker 2: that aspect, I don't lose a lot of them, you know.
- 15:33Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not picking those. I'm not picking from
- 15:36Speaker 4: the same pile. I don't think you know.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Tony Lane is one of the most incredible songwriters in history.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Has been sending me a lot of songs lately, and
- 15:44Speaker 2: it's it's so crazy to text Tony Lane back and say, man,
- 15:48Speaker 2: that's not really what I'm looking for. You know, hey,
- 15:50Speaker 2: I loved it, but it's just not it's not gonna
- 15:53Speaker 2: work on my album. And I'm sitting there shaking, like
- 15:55Speaker 2: I'm texting Tony Lane this kind He's like, Okay, I'll
- 15:57Speaker 2: be coming back with another one. And I'm like, dude,
- 15:59Speaker 2: what is this world we're living and we're I'm getting
- 16:01Speaker 2: talk to these incredible songwriters and they're writing songs for
- 16:04Speaker 2: what I'm doing. But I think that comes from picking
- 16:07Speaker 2: from that certain pile, like Okay, Josh Phillips dirt Cheap,
- 16:10Speaker 2: he said.
- 16:11Speaker 4: He told me.
- 16:11Speaker 2: He was like, man, I really, Oh, this is funny.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I can't wait to tell this, he said. I wanted
- 16:16Speaker 2: to wait for the right artists to pitch this song because.
- 16:19Speaker 4: It meant so much to me.
- 16:21Speaker 2: The day that my album comes out, Leather, I get
- 16:23Speaker 2: a text from Luke Colmbs and it's a lot of words.
- 16:27Speaker 4: That I can't say, and I was like, what did
- 16:29Speaker 4: I do to Luke? You know, like, God, he's mad.
- 16:32Speaker 2: And he sends me a screenshot of his thread on
- 16:34Speaker 2: his phone from Josh Phillips and dirt Cheap is sitting
- 16:37Speaker 2: there and he never clicked on it.
- 16:38Speaker 4: No way, no, yeah, he never clicked on it.
- 16:41Speaker 2: He could have had dirt Cheap, but he never clicked
- 16:43Speaker 2: on it.
- 16:43Speaker 4: So yeah, back at you, Luke, I got you. Yeah, right.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Well, And speaking of Luke, he's doing well on his own.
- 16:49Speaker 1: He he has a bar downtown now that's about to
- 16:53Speaker 1: open down the street. Have you ever wanted to dabble
- 16:55Speaker 1: in stuff like that? I mean, you're so prideful and
- 16:58Speaker 1: so focused on music, Like do you is that anything
- 17:02Speaker 1: eventually down the road?
- 17:03Speaker 2: We are.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Kind of well, we're in the works.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Talking to give details.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Nobody listens to me, but it's not going to be
- 17:10Speaker 2: in Nashville. It's going to be in Caltown, in Fort Worth,
- 17:14Speaker 2: in Texas, Okay. So I think like it's it's kind
- 17:17Speaker 2: of like my mo to, like, yeah, I could have
- 17:20Speaker 2: everybody wants to put a place on Broadway.
- 17:22Speaker 4: That's great.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I mean I think it's great for longevity for your family,
- 17:24Speaker 2: legacy type financial situation for sure. But for me, I
- 17:29Speaker 2: want to be able to go to my own restaurant.
- 17:31Speaker 2: So we're gonna put it in Texas where I can
- 17:32Speaker 2: just drive to it.
- 17:33Speaker 4: There you go, don't. I don't know that Nashville is the.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Spot for a Kojo's, but Kojo's in Caltown has a
- 17:38Speaker 2: pretty nice ring to it.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I do dig that early in your career, and I
- 17:43Speaker 1: bring this up all the time because it's it's to
- 17:46Speaker 1: talk to you at stagecoach in twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen,
- 17:52Speaker 1: to the Cody Johnson that sits in front of me.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Now.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Early in your career, you were so protective of everything
- 17:58Speaker 1: you touched, and not that you're not now, but to
- 18:01Speaker 1: get where you are now, you had to trust others
- 18:04Speaker 1: a little and you had to give up a little control.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Does that make sense?
- 18:08Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 18:09Speaker 3: Does that sound right?
- 18:10Speaker 2: I don't know that it's giving up control. It's dropping
- 18:13Speaker 2: your pride and knowing that like you. So, why put
- 18:18Speaker 2: people around you that you trust if you're not going
- 18:20Speaker 2: to trust them?
- 18:21Speaker 4: You know?
- 18:21Speaker 2: Why put people around you on your team that you
- 18:24Speaker 2: know can make you better if you're not going to
- 18:26Speaker 2: value their opinion? And sometimes I'm right sometimes I'm wrong.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong, but I think you
- 18:32Speaker 2: have to.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Uh.
- 18:33Speaker 2: It's like that conversation that I had with John S Posito,
- 18:36Speaker 2: who was the president of Warner at the time when
- 18:38Speaker 2: I signed. I said, look, here's the thing, man, I
- 18:40Speaker 2: don't need you and you don't need me. But I
- 18:43Speaker 2: need you and you need me, Like, how do we
- 18:45Speaker 2: make this work? Like I know that I'm not going
- 18:47Speaker 2: to ever get to that spot without putting that Warner
- 18:50Speaker 2: team around me. But also I'm not willing to go,
- 18:54Speaker 2: you know, chase the ambulance. I'm not willing to you know,
- 18:57Speaker 2: try to get the dangling carrot of fame and fortune.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I'm still going to be myself. So I don't think
- 19:01Speaker 2: I've lost control. I think it's more of a matter
- 19:03Speaker 2: of a maturity in my career as a as what
- 19:07Speaker 2: you call it, what you want, but as a business owner,
- 19:09Speaker 2: as a CEO of a of a brand, I think
- 19:12Speaker 2: the maturity of going, Man, I you know, I'm gonna
- 19:15Speaker 2: have to have help. I'm gonna have to have good
- 19:16Speaker 2: people around me and and to to take me to
- 19:19Speaker 2: that next level. Otherwise I would have done it on
- 19:20Speaker 2: my own already.
- 19:22Speaker 1: It's part of you now, knowing that you held on
- 19:25Speaker 1: tight to all of that, does any part of you
- 19:28Speaker 1: today wish that you I trusted these people earlier, or
- 19:31Speaker 1: trusted situations earlier.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Man, No, dude, everything happens for a reason. Like I've
- 19:37Speaker 2: I've always looked back at my career in my life
- 19:39Speaker 2: thinking why is it taking me eighteen years? Like why
- 19:42Speaker 2: didn't it happen here? Honestly, dude, I wasn't ready.
- 19:45Speaker 4: I don't.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I think if you'd have gave me the record deal
- 19:47Speaker 2: here versus here, I would have screwed it all up
- 19:50Speaker 2: because I wasn't my I wasn't developed enough as an artist,
- 19:54Speaker 2: as a singer, as a songwriter, as a businessman, as
- 19:56Speaker 2: a as a man period. I've had such an opportunity
- 20:01Speaker 2: in my life to develop such a wonderful marriage and
- 20:04Speaker 2: a wonderful relationship with my kids. You know, a ranch
- 20:07Speaker 2: back home in Texas. I wouldn't have had all that
- 20:09Speaker 2: because I would have been too caught up. I think
- 20:11Speaker 2: that overall, Dude, God's got a plan, and it's not
- 20:15Speaker 2: always Cody, Cody, Cody. I don't think I was ready
- 20:18Speaker 2: for it. So really, knowing myself, I'm glad that it
- 20:21Speaker 2: took this long because now I can sit here and
- 20:23Speaker 2: have these conversations with you or even a young artist,
- 20:25Speaker 2: you know, and give really good sound advice because I've
- 20:28Speaker 2: already screwed it all up. I've already made all the mistakes.
- 20:30Speaker 2: That's why it took eighteen freaking years, you know. But
- 20:33Speaker 2: I wasn't I wouldn't have been ready. I think I
- 20:35Speaker 2: would have been just a Roman candle in the wind.
- 20:37Speaker 2: It would have popped, it would have been really good,
- 20:39Speaker 2: and then i'd have faded away.
- 20:40Speaker 3: That's a great way to think of it. It's you.
- 20:43Speaker 3: You were the crock pot country singer.
- 20:46Speaker 2: That's what we're gonna call. I was gonna say Coleman lantern,
- 20:49Speaker 2: but pots way better.
- 20:55Speaker 1: When when it comes to I'd mentioned you do country music,
- 20:59Speaker 1: your way, carry her way.
- 21:00Speaker 3: All that country music.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Over especially over the last nine plus months, it seems
- 21:05Speaker 1: like is where the party's at right, everybody wants to
- 21:10Speaker 1: buy a cowboy h So number one, as a guy
- 21:15Speaker 1: who who has stayed in his lit that was gonna
- 21:19Speaker 1: sound super disrespectful, not stayed in your lane, But I
- 21:21Speaker 1: like it have to but like I mean it in
- 21:23Speaker 1: a good like I'm with you.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Does that make sense?
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 21:26Speaker 4: I'm with you.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Everybody's trying to do something different. You continue to dominate
- 21:31Speaker 1: doing it to Cody Johnson Way, but what is it?
- 21:35Speaker 1: What's your opinion envision on artists stepping into country wanting.
- 21:38Speaker 3: To try it out. I mean, obviously I'm talking like
- 21:41Speaker 3: post Malone and people like that.
- 21:43Speaker 2: So Post is a friend of mine, So I'll just
- 21:45Speaker 2: say this, he's doing it the right way. He's here
- 21:48Speaker 2: in town, he's showing up, he's doing the interviews, he's
- 21:51Speaker 2: going to these events, and he's he's rubbing elbows with
- 21:54Speaker 2: true country music artists that have a passion for it.
- 21:57Speaker 2: He's not just coming in and saying, I'm Post Malone
- 22:00Speaker 2: and I deserve every award and I deserve number ones
- 22:02Speaker 2: because I'm post Malone. He came into this with like
- 22:05Speaker 2: I'm a nobody. Doesn't matter what I've done over here
- 22:08Speaker 2: in the world of country music.
- 22:09Speaker 4: I'm brand new.
- 22:10Speaker 2: He's very respectful to everybody, and he's a great guy.
- 22:13Speaker 4: But he's not coming in with any arrogance.
- 22:16Speaker 2: It's like, doesn't matter you were post Malone, but now
- 22:18Speaker 2: you're post Malone a country yeah, And he's so good
- 22:21Speaker 2: at that man, Like he's just a normal genuine person,
- 22:23Speaker 2: and he's doing it the right way, like, man, I'm
- 22:25Speaker 2: gonna come up through the ranks. Obviously, dude, it's Post Malone,
- 22:28Speaker 2: you know, so you're gonna love the record, you know.
- 22:30Speaker 2: But he didn't come in with this arrogance of I
- 22:33Speaker 2: deserve anything. He didn't have an entitlement since. And I
- 22:35Speaker 2: think that's the difference between Posts and some other artists
- 22:39Speaker 2: that have tried it, is that those other artists come
- 22:41Speaker 2: in with, well, my name is this, and I deserve everything.
- 22:44Speaker 2: It's like, man, no, you don't. There's some of us
- 22:46Speaker 2: that have sacrificed eighteen years of our lives to be here.
- 22:48Speaker 4: So step off.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You know what, as somebody who met you a handful
- 22:52Speaker 1: of years ago, I'm gonna rewind not eighteen years ago
- 22:54Speaker 1: because we would have caused trouble, but that eighteen years ago,
- 23:00Speaker 1: anybody trying to cross over that less mature Cody Johnson
- 23:04Speaker 1: had been like, what the hell are you doing?
- 23:05Speaker 2: That's exactly right now. I appreciate it because we're getting
- 23:09Speaker 2: we're getting more light to what we do. I mean, like,
- 23:12Speaker 2: so I'll say it like this. Last year, I spoke
- 23:14Speaker 2: at the Wrangler NFR for the professional Rodeo Cowboys Association,
- 23:18Speaker 2: the board members, and I was like, you know, we
- 23:21Speaker 2: as cowboys, we have a tendency of what is what
- 23:25Speaker 2: is that dude wearing a hat for he's not a cowboy?
- 23:27Speaker 2: Look at him, got brand new boots on, Like what
- 23:30Speaker 2: is that? But here's the deal. When I was a kid,
- 23:33Speaker 2: I had Michael Jordan tennis shoes and I had a
- 23:35Speaker 2: red and black Bulls jersey with the twenty three on it.
- 23:39Speaker 4: You know why? Because I wanted to be like Mike.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Remember that.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Yep, I want to be like Mike.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I'm the worst basketball player in the history of the game, dude,
- 23:48Speaker 2: I'm telling you you would rather watch me golf than
- 23:50Speaker 2: to play basketball. And I'm a pretty athletic guy. But
- 23:53Speaker 2: the point I was making is this, I just wanted
- 23:55Speaker 2: to be like Michael Jordan's So I had a jersey
- 23:57Speaker 2: and I had J's on my feet.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:59Speaker 2: So when you have these other artists that want to
- 24:02Speaker 2: come to country music, I think it's because they think, man,
- 24:05Speaker 2: I just want the country's cool and I want to
- 24:06Speaker 2: do something. Really, I want to try country music. I
- 24:09Speaker 2: want to put a cowboy hat on and rhyinestones and
- 24:11Speaker 2: fringe and it's cool because what's good for the hat,
- 24:14Speaker 2: what's good for country music is good for us. Man.
- 24:16Speaker 2: It's good for your business, it's good for my business,
- 24:18Speaker 2: and it's good for the reason you're in radio.
- 24:20Speaker 4: I would have just willing to bet.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Because you love country music absolutely, Okay, Well, the reason
- 24:24Speaker 2: I'm here is because I love country music. So it's
- 24:26Speaker 2: not bad, man, I mean, who cares like them? Let
- 24:29Speaker 2: them come, unless that's different from the old Cody's opinion.
- 24:32Speaker 1: I love it enough where if I could play and sing,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I'd be running after your ass right now. I tell
- 24:36Speaker 1: you that I go for the opening spot, but then
- 24:38Speaker 1: i'd show up late, so you had to open for me.
- 24:41Speaker 1: I don't know if that's how that works, but.
- 24:42Speaker 3: We're gonna try it.
- 24:43Speaker 4: No, it's not.
- 24:46Speaker 1: In between now in the end of the year, what
- 24:49Speaker 1: are some things that you're looking forward to. Obviously, there's
- 24:51Speaker 1: gonna be someone plugging around the holidays.
- 24:53Speaker 3: We've talked before. That's extremely important to you.
- 24:55Speaker 2: But outside of that, really, that's that's like the biggest
- 24:57Speaker 2: I've had such a crazy two years. Leather and then
- 25:01Speaker 2: getting ready for Leather Deluxe. There's a lot of recording,
- 25:04Speaker 2: there's a lot of promoting. There's a lot of touring,
- 25:07Speaker 2: and uh, this year has been I've done more appearances
- 25:11Speaker 2: this year. Like I've spent more hours on a private
- 25:13Speaker 2: jet just trying to get to here, to get to there,
- 25:16Speaker 2: to get to here, to get home.
- 25:17Speaker 4: To do it again. And it's exhausting. Man.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Like everybody thinks it's a really you know, glamorous life,
- 25:23Speaker 2: it's man, it's a lot of work and getting through October.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Like this week, I'm on the road.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Next week I'm gonna be at my team roping, the
- 25:33Speaker 2: Kojo Championship Team Roping in Belton, Texas. And that's gonna
- 25:36Speaker 2: be a lot of work when you're hosting an event,
- 25:38Speaker 2: like you're.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Can I say balls of the Wall?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 25:41Speaker 4: Yeah, your balls of the Wall all week?
- 25:43Speaker 1: Man.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And it's like when you get through that October period,
- 25:46Speaker 2: when November comes around, it's like I get to breathe,
- 25:49Speaker 2: go home unplugged. That's what I look forward to the
- 25:51Speaker 2: most every year is deer season's coming around, which gives
- 25:54Speaker 2: me an excuse to go sit in a deer stand
- 25:56Speaker 2: with my kids and you know, build a fire and
- 25:59Speaker 2: sit around and real small marshmallows and all that cool
- 26:01Speaker 2: stuff that everybody else is.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Like, yeah, we do that all the time.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Well, I don't get to, so it's really special to me.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I said on Sunday and watched the football.
- 26:09Speaker 4: I don't want to hear it. I just got all
- 26:11Speaker 4: a plane at four am.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I slept till two. Now everybody's doing their own thing.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I'm going where the holding my family go, you know,
- 26:16Speaker 2: like it's.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Yeah, hey, and the private you can tap that in
- 26:19Speaker 3: if you want to come on in. Oh' just like
- 26:22Speaker 3: that to me.
- 26:23Speaker 4: I just wanted one, but I really shouldn't.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Okay, you're fine, I really shouldn't, but uh, okay, what's
- 26:28Speaker 3: one more? It's fine.
- 26:30Speaker 4: That's how it gets started, dude. I know it is
- 26:33Speaker 4: not even noon.
- 26:34Speaker 1: That's self true to see how the one in fifteen minutes.
- 26:38Speaker 1: The private jet life. We've talked to other artists about
- 26:41Speaker 1: this and it's not necessarily like you're balling. It's no, no,
- 26:45Speaker 1: you want to get home as fast as you can
- 26:47Speaker 1: in between things.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's something that like.
- 26:49Speaker 2: So here's where it started for me was airports, public airports.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I went to the first time it happened, I landed.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Actually know we for those of you don't, I don't know.
- 27:00Speaker 2: That's like my best friend in the world. He's my
- 27:02Speaker 2: right hand man.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Like his his title is no, he like, there's not
- 27:05Speaker 4: really a title. Maybe my handler?
- 27:08Speaker 1: What is it?
- 27:09Speaker 4: What is this?
- 27:09Speaker 2: He's the only reason I'm here.
- 27:10Speaker 4: He's the one that woke me up at nine this morning.
- 27:13Speaker 2: And I was like, I'll just take this trip by myself,
- 27:14Speaker 2: no big deal, and I'll never forget it. Like I
- 27:16Speaker 2: landed in like Minnesota or somewhere somewhere up north, and
- 27:19Speaker 2: I was on the phone with my wife walking out
- 27:21Speaker 2: from baggage claim, and I look up and there's like
- 27:23Speaker 2: fifty people and they've all got signs and they're screaming,
- 27:27Speaker 2: and they just kind of rushed me, and it kind
- 27:30Speaker 2: of No, he wasn't there.
- 27:32Speaker 3: That was normally he would fight him.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Normally he'd be like, hey, you know, hey, here's my
- 27:36Speaker 2: here's my point. I said, hey, guys, I'll sign all
- 27:39Speaker 2: this stuff. How it's like nine o'clock at night. I
- 27:41Speaker 2: was like, how did you guys know I was even here,
- 27:44Speaker 2: Like I'm flying into nowhere. They were like, oh, we
- 27:47Speaker 2: got your flight number from Houston and I'm like what.
- 27:49Speaker 2: They were like, yeah, well, somebody followed you in the
- 27:51Speaker 2: airport and took a picture of your flight number, so
- 27:53Speaker 2: we knew exactly what time you'd be here. And I'm like,
- 27:56Speaker 2: I don't like being hunted, so I kind of got
- 27:58Speaker 2: I was like, okay, Deerfield, the tables turned. But then
- 28:06Speaker 2: like so I started wearing like joggers and a you know,
- 28:09Speaker 2: ball cap pulled down.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.
- 28:12Speaker 2: And it started getting kind of chaotic in airports to
- 28:15Speaker 2: the point where I was like, Okay, I have anxiety
- 28:16Speaker 2: about even being here, So how much is it gonna cost,
- 28:20Speaker 2: you know, to fly private and look at this astronomical number.
- 28:23Speaker 2: But looking ahead, we were able to strategically plan financial
- 28:27Speaker 2: gains and you know, I've got my own personal investments
- 28:30Speaker 2: and things like that that I was like, Okay, we
- 28:32Speaker 2: can afford this. I'm going to start flying private just
- 28:36Speaker 2: because I can take my kids and my family. Or
- 28:39Speaker 2: like you said, if it's if we get off stage
- 28:41Speaker 2: at eleven and it's midnight, dude, I can be back
- 28:43Speaker 2: home by two or three in the morning, and I
- 28:45Speaker 2: sleep and I'm home and I can take my kids
- 28:47Speaker 2: to church on a Sunday morning like a normal person,
- 28:50Speaker 2: you know, or or we go rope or whatever, it is,
- 28:52Speaker 2: but it's a lot of sacrifice financially, and it's a
- 28:55Speaker 2: lot of sacrifice time wise, but it's worth it.
- 28:58Speaker 4: You're getting what you pay for for sure.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Absolutely, deluxe edition. What made you decide that leather would
- 29:05Speaker 1: be deluxe? And I want to say we talked at
- 29:09Speaker 1: the ACM Awards, not this past year, but the year
- 29:11Speaker 1: before about doing a leather cologne with the release of this.
- 29:16Speaker 3: I've seen in the notes you decided not to do that.
- 29:19Speaker 4: I I didn't think it was very lucrative.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Well, if I give you ideas that a year and
- 29:22Speaker 3: I'll take them, okay? Or is that not something you say.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Recorded?
- 29:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we have that down by the way, I'm watching
- 29:33Speaker 2: the sound lights.
- 29:34Speaker 1: But when it when it comes to the deluxe edition,
- 29:37Speaker 1: a lot of people are doing it, but you definitely
- 29:38Speaker 1: are doing it different.
- 29:39Speaker 4: It was an accident.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Why if you want to know the real truth, it
- 29:43Speaker 2: was an accident. So I had Human the double album, right, Yeah.
- 29:46Speaker 2: I don't want to do another double album because like
- 29:48Speaker 2: that's double album, double album.
- 29:49Speaker 4: Yeah, So here's how this goes down.
- 29:53Speaker 2: At the end of the day, I looked at all
- 29:54Speaker 2: the songs that I had to record, and there was
- 29:56Speaker 2: twenty five of them.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Had to like, I can't get rid of these.
- 29:58Speaker 2: There's no way I'm not recording these, and they were
- 30:02Speaker 2: kind of already recorded, and so I was like, shit,
- 30:05Speaker 2: there's twenty five songs on here.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Yeah, what do we do now?
- 30:08Speaker 2: So Chris Lacey Warner Music, Nashville, one of my best
- 30:11Speaker 2: friends in the world.
- 30:12Speaker 4: I was like, what do I do? She's like, I
- 30:14Speaker 4: have an idea. Let's deluxe it.
- 30:16Speaker 2: She's like, so, basically, you need to separate these songs
- 30:18Speaker 2: because I already had it in sequential order, like I've
- 30:21Speaker 2: told you before, I do it like a set list.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Yep.
- 30:23Speaker 2: She's like, you need to go back through and separate
- 30:24Speaker 2: this into two different set lists. Let's do leather and
- 30:27Speaker 2: then later on we'll release the deluxe edition. I was like,
- 30:30Speaker 2: what is a deluxe edition. She's like, basically, it's like a.
- 30:32Speaker 4: Part two but not really.
- 30:33Speaker 3: And You're like, yeah, okay.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And so, like any other interview, we strategized and when,
- 30:38Speaker 2: and it was absolutely my idea, but it wasn't.
- 30:41Speaker 4: It was Chris Lacey.
- 30:41Speaker 3: But we talked before. You're not a big deluxe guy
- 30:43Speaker 3: in general.
- 30:44Speaker 2: No, But it was either that to release another double
- 30:47Speaker 2: album and I didn't want the redundancy of that, you
- 30:50Speaker 2: know what, the everything happens for a reason.
- 30:52Speaker 4: I've said that twice in this interview.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:54Speaker 2: The cool part is for me, I've noticed that the
- 30:56Speaker 2: fans on the first part of Leather, they had a
- 30:59Speaker 2: chance to really die just that record.
- 31:01Speaker 4: You know, we watched it in streaming.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Was sitting there and I pay attention to all this
- 31:04Speaker 2: stuff of like, these songs are streaming really well, we
- 31:07Speaker 2: should maybe put those in the set. These songs did
- 31:09Speaker 2: really well live, but they didn't stream as much.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Obviously.
- 31:12Speaker 2: We got two number ones off of this thing, and
- 31:14Speaker 2: the fans are like, okay, we've we've had, We're finished
- 31:17Speaker 2: with this plate.
- 31:18Speaker 4: What's the next course?
- 31:20Speaker 2: And I think that's a cool concept like that, And
- 31:22Speaker 2: in me as a fan, I started thinking about it,
- 31:24Speaker 2: like for people that I like, like, dude, I wish
- 31:26Speaker 2: that record would have been split in half, where I
- 31:27Speaker 2: could have had these twelve songs first, where I could.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Have just fallen in love with what I fell in
- 31:31Speaker 4: love with.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Maybe this was not so much, and then you get
- 31:34Speaker 2: the second course and you're like, oh, I have something new,
- 31:37Speaker 2: Like it was really cool, but it was all one project, you.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Know, so what made you go leather deluxe instead of like,
- 31:42Speaker 1: did you so? I'd imagine you bring up Michael Jordan
- 31:45Speaker 1: and Jays and all that. Did you ever listen to
- 31:47Speaker 1: the Nelly the rapper Nelly? Yeah, bro, so he put
- 31:50Speaker 1: out the album Sweat and then Suit. So why didn't
- 31:52Speaker 1: you do like leather and lace leather. That's the first
- 31:56Speaker 1: person that said, why deluxe?
- 31:59Speaker 3: That it sounds okay. It's because it's deluxe deluxe.
- 32:03Speaker 1: It sounds cool because the first one was like, actually version,
- 32:07Speaker 1: this is the four wheel drivers.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, this one has leather.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Got it.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Like that?
- 32:13Speaker 4: No, you really want to know the truth. Apparently, in
- 32:15Speaker 4: this industry, if it's.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Called a deluxe, if you put the word deluxe.
- 32:19Speaker 4: On it, it all counts as one project.
- 32:22Speaker 2: So for instance, when you're talking about gold or platinum
- 32:25Speaker 2: or diamond certifications, if it was two different things, if
- 32:28Speaker 2: it was a part one and a part two, it's
- 32:30Speaker 2: two separate things.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Deluxe on it.
- 32:34Speaker 2: All your streaming and all your sales and all your
- 32:36Speaker 2: numbers count for one project.
- 32:37Speaker 3: The business side, I couldn't do it. I just hit
- 32:41Speaker 3: play dude, I don't know.
- 32:41Speaker 4: I had really cool names. But then when they told
- 32:43Speaker 4: me that.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I was like, deluxe it is, yeah, so let's get
- 32:46Speaker 2: a diamond.
- 32:47Speaker 3: So what was the cool name?
- 32:48Speaker 1: Like if you're gonna say if if they were like, hey,
- 32:50Speaker 1: rename it, we hate deluxe.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Rename it.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Now go the extended version.
- 32:54Speaker 2: I was trying to think like movies and stuff like that,
- 32:57Speaker 2: like like quin, what would Quentin Tarantino call it?
- 33:00Speaker 4: But I mean there's nothing. There's a lot to be
- 33:01Speaker 4: said for a part one and part two. It's like,
- 33:02Speaker 4: oh there's a part two.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Are so you do leather and then leather leather, stick
- 33:09Speaker 1: with the put out pleasure first because then you get
- 33:16Speaker 1: ye holler at me for more marketing tips.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Jelly Roll just text me. Sorry, go ahead.
- 33:22Speaker 3: No, he's a he's a friend of ours. He comes.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Actually last time he was here, somebody was playing a
- 33:27Speaker 1: show or you know, they got the people playing out
- 33:29Speaker 1: here and he went out and sang with them.
- 33:31Speaker 2: He said, he's on Joe Rogan's podcast right now and
- 33:33Speaker 2: he's like, I'm fixing to pump you up again.
- 33:35Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I don't know, Joe, But jelly Roll, you're getting mentioned
- 33:38Speaker 2: on Wayne D. Like we're down here in the in
- 33:40Speaker 2: the slums. Buddy told Rogan have us on the show
- 33:43Speaker 2: a lot more.
- 33:44Speaker 3: Isn't that nice that you're stuck here with me? And
- 33:48Speaker 3: he's it's Joey Rogan.
- 33:50Speaker 4: I'm where I need to be, buddy.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Last thing I want to ask, which I'm over my time?
- 33:56Speaker 1: Porte is the one that has to go through all
- 33:58Speaker 1: this audio. I just I just go I'm over my time,
- 34:00Speaker 1: and she goes, it's okay, I'm sorry, it's fine.
- 34:04Speaker 2: There's I have a famous quote like if I'll ever
- 34:07Speaker 2: remember anything I've ever said, here's the quote, They'll wait. Yeah,
- 34:11Speaker 2: well we have another appointment here in it they'll wait.
- 34:14Speaker 3: True. Hey, we had to.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Prick said if he said they'll wait this morning before
- 34:23Speaker 1: he left the bus, I'm done.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Now.
- 34:25Speaker 4: You know that was for the first interviews.
- 34:27Speaker 2: It wasn't for you, obviously. I literally got to the
- 34:29Speaker 2: first interview, was like, hey, we got to hear this
- 34:30Speaker 2: ship up.
- 34:30Speaker 4: We gotta get to Wayne d Okay that, but do one?
- 34:33Speaker 3: How long are you in town for?
- 34:35Speaker 4: I'm just looking over at my Warner buddy over here.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Just today.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Now we're headed out tonight. We play a Minnesota tomorrow
- 34:42Speaker 2: in Minnesota, Minneapolis, and then we go uh Kansas City, Missouri.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Excel Energy Center.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, sure it's a good spot.
- 34:49Speaker 3: No, it's a nice I'm from Minneapolis, so take me,
- 34:52Speaker 3: take me with us. What I'm saying, hop on.
- 34:54Speaker 4: The bus, buddy bus, no.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Talking all this, PJ. All of a sudden, I get
- 34:59Speaker 3: it in, but I gotta ge on a fucking buss.
- 35:01Speaker 3: I'm out. Sorry, I'm not fancy.
- 35:05Speaker 4: It's not as fancy as you think.
- 35:07Speaker 3: I believe that's pretty.
- 35:11Speaker 1: The last thing I want to ask you is, uh,
- 35:13Speaker 1: you are a tattoo guy, but your tattoos tell a story, right,
- 35:17Speaker 1: I mean we've talked before.
- 35:18Speaker 3: There are some that you're like, just cuz what was
- 35:21Speaker 3: most recent and what's next?
- 35:23Speaker 2: So uh, let's see I can pull this off here
- 35:26Speaker 2: show you so like, you know, I've got the feathers
- 35:28Speaker 2: kind of represent like growth in indians Is where I
- 35:30Speaker 2: went to school, and so I love the red and
- 35:32Speaker 2: black feathers. So I just started taking the feathers up
- 35:35Speaker 2: my arm and putting the shading in around like.
- 35:37Speaker 4: So this is my wife, Clara Corey.
- 35:41Speaker 2: But like I've still got to go in and shade
- 35:43Speaker 2: all this all the way up my arm, and these
- 35:45Speaker 2: feathers you can't see it. What a gig all the
- 35:47Speaker 2: way up the back of my arm right here, and
- 35:48Speaker 2: I've got my ranch brand, the jbar C, and so
- 35:51Speaker 2: like we'll finish shading that I did six hours and
- 35:55Speaker 2: then my arm just got pissed off and started spitting
- 35:58Speaker 2: the ink back out. And he's like, dude, you're done.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Like he's like, I've had a leg to work on.
- 36:02Speaker 2: We could switch, but like, your your arm is done today. Uh,
- 36:05Speaker 2: we gotta do the shading, paint the feathers red and
- 36:10Speaker 2: a few little blue things here and there, and then
- 36:12Speaker 2: I'll be completely done with this arm.
- 36:14Speaker 4: The same guy, Buffalo Jake out of Vegas.
- 36:17Speaker 2: He wants to come back and reblue this and kind
- 36:19Speaker 2: of reread the feathers just to kind of make it
- 36:21Speaker 2: all cohesive where it looks like it was done at
- 36:23Speaker 2: one time. And he's like that way at ages the
- 36:25Speaker 2: same you know what I mean, Like you don't want
- 36:27Speaker 2: like half your arm looking like it was done twenty
- 36:29Speaker 2: years ago. But uh, I don't know, like I thought
- 36:31Speaker 2: I've thought about from here up on this arm, just
- 36:33Speaker 2: doing black one offs like of Texas stuff, just like
- 36:36Speaker 2: Texas flags, historical Texas flags. I like that because I've
- 36:39Speaker 2: got a Texas over my chest on this side. I
- 36:41Speaker 2: have an idea for like when we do get to
- 36:43Speaker 2: pull this tattoo off, like you you know, we talked
- 36:45Speaker 2: about the microphones and all that stuff, right, I have
- 36:47Speaker 2: a feeling you're gonna go over the top, like you're
- 36:50Speaker 2: gonna be sitting there for four hours. I figured out
- 36:53Speaker 2: something I canna be done in thirty minutes.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Okay, so I used.
- 36:56Speaker 4: Obviously, I've got so on my chest.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I've got resist all just all cawboy hatline, right yeah,
- 37:01Speaker 2: because you only get a Cowboy heatline for the first
- 37:03Speaker 2: time once, right Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 4: I ride for the brand. I use cactus ropes and
- 37:07Speaker 4: I ride for the brand.
- 37:08Speaker 2: So I'm just gonna get a little tiny cactus right there,
- 37:11Speaker 2: and then I'm gonna sit back and watch you go.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Oh.
- 37:16Speaker 4: I'm gonna be like, I'm gonna have a cocktail and
- 37:18Speaker 4: I'll be like, hey, my cactus is done. When are
- 37:20Speaker 4: you still sick in the chair?
- 37:22Speaker 3: And you know what, I'm gonna make a mordering pizza.
- 37:24Speaker 4: You've been here for three freaking hours.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna make sure you keep drinking until you pass out,
- 37:27Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna have him add sunglasses.
- 37:29Speaker 3: To that cactus. So that's so cool. It's actually it's
- 37:33Speaker 3: gonna have a daisy on.
- 37:34Speaker 4: This's not a bad idea ude.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Listen, you're talking to the guy who has one on
- 37:37Speaker 2: his foot.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Oh that's true, the bottom of my foot. What is
- 37:40Speaker 4: it again, one foot over a line?
- 37:43Speaker 3: Oh that's way Jennings lyric. Yeah, yeah, I remember that guy.
- 37:46Speaker 4: I barely remember that. I have pictures of it though,
- 37:49Speaker 4: that it's there, that it happened, that it happened.
- 37:52Speaker 2: My wife called me the next day and was like,
- 37:54Speaker 2: did you tattoo your foot last night after the show,
- 37:56Speaker 2: And I went.
- 37:59Speaker 4: Yes, I did.
- 38:00Speaker 3: You're like, ship, I thought I stepped on the nail.
- 38:02Speaker 4: It's like, no, wonder my foot has swollen. Oh dude, yeah,
- 38:05Speaker 4: that was a that was a night. Things you do
- 38:07Speaker 4: on a tour bus can't do that on a p J.
- 38:09Speaker 3: That's true. Too much Turby, you can't. That's but that's
- 38:12Speaker 3: why we ride the bus, right boys.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Yeah, cheap ass Cody Cody Johnson, Thanks man, Thanks for
