- 0:00In his book The Mother, Sri Aurobindo describes sex as one
- 0:04of the three forces quote power, wealth, sex that have the
- 0:10strongest attraction for the human ego and the asura and are
- 0:14most generally misheld and misused by those who retain
- 0:19them. End Quote.
- 0:21The force of the sex impulse is one that impacts not just a
- 0:25specific individual, but social interactions and spiritual
- 0:30sadhna. From a general perspective, the
- 0:33sex impulse arises in the animal Kingdom and acts as a means for
- 0:38ensuring the continuity of the race and as a means of creating
- 0:43intimate human bonding, while also being used as a form of
- 0:47control and domination. It provides a strong, vital
- 0:52physical response that is experienced as highly
- 0:55pleasurable and thus something that people and animals seek
- 1:01after and try to repeat. The sex impulse is so powerful
- 1:06and potentially disruptive to social bonds that it has been
- 1:10surrounded by numerous and widespread taboos, has been
- 1:14stigmatized by many as something sinful or dirty, and at the same
- 1:19time treated as a strong allurement and motivating force.
- 1:25In the modern world, sexualization begins even with
- 1:29young children, who are frequently dressed in such a way
- 1:32as to entice and provoke, and thus treated as an object of
- 1:37desire by individuals who are unable to manage this force
- 1:42effectively. Meanwhile, entertainment and
- 1:46even the sale of goods is contextualized with sexual
- 1:49innuendo, sexual content, and overt forms of sexual
- 1:55enticement. The sexual energy can drive an
- 1:58individual to extreme lengths and has been an underlying force
- 2:03that leads to lust, jealousy, and other forms of disruptive
- 2:08behaviour both for the individual and for the society.
- 2:14Laws are developed to try to regulate the disruptive power of
- 2:17sex. These laws, however, have little
- 2:20impact on an individual under the influence of the
- 2:23unrestrained sexual impulse. As a result, human society
- 2:29confronts this issue with mixed results.
- 2:32Laws, taboos and customs arise to hold the sexual impulse under
- 2:38some form of control, while meanwhile the society itself
- 2:43fixates on sex as a central theme, motive and forced to be
- 2:48desired and developed in the life.
- 2:51And when that is not possible, there are widespread occurrences
- 2:55of rape, weaponizing of sexual violence in the context of war
- 3:00or attempted domination, pedophilia and the proliferation
- 3:06of sexual images. The role of the sex impulse in
- 3:10life and the complexity surrounding it takes on a new
- 3:13aspect when a spiritual seeker attempts to understand and deal
- 3:18with it in a way that furthers his spiritual development.
- 3:23This too has an individual as well as a social aspect,
- 3:28especially if the individual has joined a community centered
- 3:32around spiritual development such as a monastery, ashram,
- 3:38cloister or other form of close knit community.
- 3:42In such instances, the sexual energy can become an extremely
- 3:46disruptive force in the community and can lead to far
- 3:50reaching negative consequences for the group.
- 3:54In most cases, this issue is addressed by segregating male
- 3:58and female members, yet this does not solve the issue.
- 4:03Witness the widespread occurrence of homosexuality or
- 4:07pedophilia in various religious groups that suppress sexuality
- 4:12with vows of celibacy without solving the underlying force of
- 4:17the vital animal drive itself. Eventually, the underlying force
- 4:22itself must be understood, addressed and transformed.
- 4:28Due to the complexity and widespread role of sex in all of
- 4:32human life, a step by step review will be required and in
- 4:37the coming days we propose to take up these issues.
- 4:41Since our primary focus is on the development of a new
- 4:45transformative stage of conscious evolution, we
- 4:49appreciate the eventual need to overcome the lower vital
- 4:53physical nature of this force and use the energy liberated
- 4:57from sex to develop the new higher consciousness.
- 5:02What this implies and how this can be done must be the focus of
- 5:07our forthcoming comprehensive review of the subject.
- 5:11This requires breaking through all of the moral and social
- 5:14rules and laws surrounding sex and seeing the vital physical
- 5:19drive for what it is. Not sinful, not dirty, but a
- 5:24basic force of evolution centered in the physical vital
- 5:28nature and thus being able to understand, overcome and master
- 5:35this first chakra energy. As with any power, there are
- 5:39both positive and negative aspects in the most general
- 5:42sense, and there is the evolutionary trend that requires
- 5:47harnessing the raw first chakra energy and redirecting it
- 5:51towards spiritual fulfillment. Trior Vindo writes quote The
- 5:58sodic has to turn away entirely from the invasion of the vital
- 6:02in the physical by the sex impulse 4 If he does not conquer
- 6:07the sex impulse, there can be no settling in the body of the
- 6:11divine consciousness and the divine Ananda.
