Transcript
- 0:12All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:14Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:18Network. For the next couple of hours.
- 0:20Trent Condon, myself, Ken Miller will overreact to what we saw
- 0:23over the weekend. Look forward to that.
- 0:25Here's what's coming up on our program at the bottom of the
- 0:28hour. Scott Doctorman will join us
- 0:30from The Athletic. He was sequestered in the Jack
- 0:33Trice press box on Saturday morning into the afternoon.
- 0:37We'll get Doc's take on what he saw on Psy Hawk.
- 0:40Coming up at the bottom of the hour, Hour number two, Bama,
- 0:43Bob, Trent and I will go around college football.
- 0:45Look forward to that bit and then Bill Seals will join.
- 0:49We'll get Bill Seals perspective on Psy Hawk and looking forward
- 0:52to this week. Arkansas State.
- 0:54That is a three o'clock kick down the hall from us here at
- 0:58the flagship 106.3 kicks. You know the game will air on
- 1:01100.3 the bus, but ESPN 2 has the television coverage that
- 1:06comes up Saturday at 3. The Hawks play 6:00 or 536
- 1:11o'clock on the Big 10 Network against UMass, and Ference
- 1:15should be the winningest Big 10 coach.
- 1:18Once that one concludes at about 9:00 or 9:30 or whenever that
- 1:23time arrives. We will, if time allows, get
- 1:27into the NFL from yesterday. What a weekend that was, capping
- 1:30off with that just phenomenal Saturday night, Sunday Night
- 1:33Football. My God, what a finale there.
- 1:35That was good. So lots to get to.
- 1:38The Chiefs are in last place in the AFC West.
- 1:40Won't linger there because there's still some football to
- 1:43be played, but boy, it's sure nice to click on the standings
- 1:46and see those suckers right at the bottom.
- 1:48Yeah, it'll last. You think it will?
- 1:50No. No, I didn't think so.
- 1:52We the Colts, were good. Colts were good.
- 1:54Danny Dimes was good, yeah. Aaron Rodgers was good.
- 1:57Aaron Rodgers really good in a shootout.
- 1:59Just like we all had The Jets and the Steelers, right?
- 2:01Unbelievable back and forth Fields V Rodgers anyways,
- 2:04obviously front and center and we will have a game tonight that
- 2:07you can hear if you can't be in front of your TV.
- 2:09Yes we have Westwood one, but we also have the Vikings.
- 2:12So when those two collide, we defer to our friend up north,
- 2:15Paul Allen in the Minnesota Vikings Radio Network.
- 2:18They'll have the call. Vikings and Bears.
- 2:21We'll get to that here this evening.
- 2:24Tie Hawk from the weekend. Where do you want to start?
- 2:27Well, it was a great weekend. Perfect weekend.
- 2:30For. For me.
- 2:32In what respect? Jack had the only goal in A1.
- 2:35Nothing. Victory.
- 2:35Oh, there you go. Ella won a softball tournament.
- 2:38Jeez. First one of the fall.
- 2:40Trophy came home to the condom. Absolutely never a trophy.
- 2:43That's a ring. Oh yeah, nice ring from Central
- 2:47Iowa Sports. So we're often there was other
- 2:50stuff that happened. This There was Trent.
- 2:51There was a little game played at Jack Trice.
- 2:53Stadium I I tried to block that out of my memory.
- 2:55Yeah, I I think that half the state probably is going down
- 2:58that same path. 1613 and the most clutch kicker in college
- 3:02football did it again. Kyle couldn't.
- 3:04Wait, wait, wait, Summer. You're killing the guy all year.
- 3:06Well, I hadn't seen him as a sophomore.
- 3:09I mean, what a what an improvement freshman to
- 3:11sophomore. I could be.
- 3:12I did say that, yes, and I look bad for saying, but that's off
- 3:16to him because last year he was an average kicker.
- 3:18This year he said anything. But he's phenomenal this year.
- 3:21In a game that felt like from the time that I was scored the
- 3:25touchdown to make it 1310, you know that it was setting up to
- 3:29be a fair and special. He was hang around, hang around,
- 3:33make a play, get a break and he win it.
- 3:36The break when Iowa states way. That recipe isn't working
- 3:41anymore for Iowa football, no. I mean the the double, the
- 3:44double tipped ball. Yes.
- 3:46Graves gets it, then Townsend got it right, and then Berkel
- 3:50snagged it and had a couple of Hawks on his back and took it to
- 3:53the ground. What a game changing play.
- 3:54You see that deflection, the second deflection because so
- 3:57many people missed the first deflection.
- 3:59You. Know what?
- 4:00I didn't see it till this morning.
- 4:01Truth be told, yeah. And was it the angle from Iowa
- 4:04State football? It was, yeah.
- 4:05With Jim Walters ball. Yeah.
- 4:07So you see that deflection, first of all, normally just goes
- 4:10to the ground, right? Defensive tackle gets hand on.
- 4:12It doesn't. Then it hits a second time off.
- 4:14A wide receiver pops up in the air. 80% of the time it's.
- 4:19Going the other way. If the ball was caught, it's by
- 4:22a defensive player and there's Gabe Burkle and there's Gabe
- 4:25Burkle making the play of the game and the difference of the
- 4:28game. Ultimately, it was huge.
- 4:29Comes down to that. Saw a lot of people mention
- 4:33before the end, before that play that the environment was bad at
- 4:39Jack Trice, that it was what it was just so dead.
- 4:42It was a boring football game and after the onslaught of
- 4:46points, Iowa has the long drive, another long drive.
- 4:49It was just, I remember seeing Travis, who we've met before, he
- 4:53mentioned it, that talking to friends and family that were at
- 4:56the game from OH. Travis on Twitter.
- 4:58Travis. Yeah.
- 4:59Travis was in Council Bluffs with us, I think.
- 5:01Yes, yes, absolutely. Middle of the second quarter
- 5:04till late in the fourth quarter just.
- 5:08Well, I think that Dad, I, I think that fans probably saw the
- 5:11game that kind of we did that, you know, the tide had turned
- 5:14and it just seemed like it was a matter of time.
- 5:16As you said before, fair and special rears its head and it
- 5:19didn't happen overall. You walk away from this game. 2
- 5:23good defenses. Yes.
- 5:25Iowa State gets a win. All credit to them.
- 5:27But did you walk away impressed by the Cyclones?
- 5:30I don't think they can run the ball.
- 5:32They they struggled to run the football.
- 5:35They have Rocco backed. That's a big.
- 5:37Definition, that's a huge difference.
- 5:39What a clutch what a clutch QB, what a what a just to have that
- 5:44kind of guy on your roster, man, A a lot of teams wish they did,
- 5:53man. I don't think Iowa State's the
- 5:54big best team in the Big 12. I don't.
- 5:56Think so either. I think there's probably two or
- 5:58three losses out there, but you know what?
- 6:01Go to go to Ireland, win, come back tough game, crush player in
- 6:06state rival win and now go to Arkansas State with a chance
- 6:09before you know, before you get to buy.
- 6:11I don't even well, maybe Cyclone Jerry would have yes, right, but
- 6:16there's not a Mike in Waterloo. Mike in Waterloo would have been
- 6:19four and he had a beloved 1. So I wonder where that one's
- 6:21going to come from. Yeah, we laughed at him.
- 6:24But they got a chance to. They got a chance to be 4 and
- 6:26NIL. They should be 4 and NIL.
- 6:27They should be. Arkansas State got hammered by
- 6:29Arkansas this week. They should be 5 and nil.
- 6:32Because our Arizona's after that, right?
- 6:34Yeah, probably. So it's hope.
- 6:35Yeah, probably so. But but look, it give give
- 6:38credit I Iowa State just they've done it.
- 6:41They've done it again. Eskeldson made a couple of big
- 6:44plays. They did.
- 6:44He did have a drop in the football game.
- 6:47The defence, it was McDonough was all over the all over the
- 6:53the my television set late in the football game.
- 6:55You know who had this worst game?
- 6:57I don't know if I don't. I didn't see any of Caden
- 7:00Wegian's high school. Career, yeah.
- 7:02And maybe he had one, but this had to be the worst he's ever
- 7:05looked. Start off the game with a
- 7:07penalty, Can't do that. Nope.
- 7:10Running backwards, letting the ball, Yep, hit, Yep, then going
- 7:13back to getting it going backwards now.
- 7:15Iowa scored on that drive. I do think Cooper he had a
- 7:18chance, even when he slipped on Gradowski's interception, Cooper
- 7:21had already made the break. It was definitely going to be a
- 7:24past breakup. Yes, if not minimum, at minimum.
- 7:27And there was two guys there. It was a terrible read, even if
- 7:30there wasn't the slip from Wegen.
- 7:31Yeah, Cooper was going to make a play.
- 7:33Yes, and there was somebody right behind him.
- 7:35That was a terrible read, which we'll get to 'cause it's not
- 7:38surprising. No, it's not.
- 7:41The other thing about Cooper now, why did he cut back to the
- 7:43field, 'cause I think he could have got to the end, 'cause.
- 7:45Yeah, he stayed on the sideline, didn't he?
- 7:47I may, maybe fatigue, who knows. The punt, the punt that was
- 7:52there was a flag thrown for interference on the ability to
- 7:56catch the punt. The ball did hit Townsend's
- 7:59wrist forearm. The penalty was for he was
- 8:03blocked into. The return, that's what they
- 8:05were, that's what the number. So somebody threw the flag, saw
- 8:08it differently, and then he was talked out of the flag by the
- 8:12group of officials. I thought he was.
- 8:14I thought it was interference. I didn't think he was blocked
- 8:17into him because that was the explanation.
- 8:18That's why the flag was there for pass catch or it was picked
- 8:22up because he was blocked into him.
- 8:23That's when they picked up the. Flight.
- 8:24I thought that was. I thought I caught a break
- 8:26there. Absolutely.
- 8:27I definitely. I'm with you on that one.
- 8:30Change the complexion of it though, and without that I was
- 8:33going nowhere. Well, look, Iowa State had a
- 8:35chance to bury him early. Yes, bury him early.
- 8:37And credit to the Iowa defense for clamping down a both those
- 8:40field goal attempts because they were cruising on both of those
- 8:43drives and then were able to buckle down and do the Phil
- 8:45Parker thing. Defense got him in the game.
- 8:48Once again, you we've maybe had this conversation before.
- 8:52Chant was the last time I had a good quarterback.
- 8:55Nate Stanley at the time left something to be desired.
- 8:58It was always you wanted more for because you felt like for
- 9:01all the good moments and all the good numbers that he put up,
- 9:03that he left too many plays on the field to have Nate Stanley.
- 9:07Now the guy looks like Chuck Long.
- 9:09He does. And this was a guy that was a
- 9:13disappointment in a lot of people's eyes hung around the
- 9:17league. But since then, and it's not
- 9:18just the guys that we've seen out there in the field, think of
- 9:21also the guys that they brought in, the guys that they brought
- 9:24in and gone to lower levels and go to D2 that are now playing
- 9:27tight end because they can't play quarterback at the D2
- 9:30level. This is what has happened to the
- 9:33quarterback position. It's just it's just not the
- 9:35garbage that we've seen on the field.
- 9:37It's also who they brought in. How can they have this much of A
- 9:41blind spot when it comes to finding quarterbacks?
- 9:44They can't just be parents. Well, he's the common
- 9:47denominator. But you can't year after year
- 9:50after year have these same things happen.
- 9:53Is it the evaluation process? Is it what they're looking for?
- 9:56Is it just taking the easy way out?
- 9:58Again, he's the common denominator.
- 10:00They've been different evaluators there, but it comes
- 10:02back to him. Who would you rather have, Mark
- 10:05Gronowski or Brendan Sullivan? Because they look like basically
- 10:10the same guy and I'd rather have Sullivans.
- 10:11See, I think I would still take Gronowski.
- 10:13Why? What have you seen that makes
- 10:15you say that he is better than what they had just last year
- 10:18with Brendan Sullivan when he was out there?
- 10:21Well, it's kind of the lesser of two, I want to say.
- 10:25The lesser of two evils. Kind of 6 of 1/2 a dozen of the
- 10:28other, right? They're both not very good.
- 10:30No, I like Gronowski's size. I don't know.
- 10:34I mean, you know, I get your point.
- 10:36I get your point. They just don't have a
- 10:39quarterback and they haven't had for a long time.
- 10:42And you're they pay what do? They pay.
- 10:44It's not 2 million. Whatever it is, who cares too
- 10:47much? They, they made a mistake again.
- 10:50They went out and got McNamara. He was going to be the guy.
- 10:53They've done it again. They made a mistake.
- 10:55Whatever the evaluation is and whatever that game plan was.
- 10:58Yuck, That was awful. Tim Lester, maybe there was a
- 11:02reason he was an analyst in Green Bay.
- 11:04And we go back to what, 18 months ago when Kirk was taken
- 11:07forever to find an offensive coordinator and this is what he
- 11:10came up with. Waited, waited, wait.
- 11:12And we looked at the numbers and when Tim Lester was an offensive
- 11:14coordinator at Syracuse, it was terrible.
- 11:16And then there was the excuses. And then there's a reason that
- 11:18he was out of a job and became an analyst.
- 11:21Maybe there's a reason because what he put together the game,
- 11:24the running pack that starts the game.
- 11:26There's the wrong one. Terrell Washington is 1/3 down
- 11:28back. He's a scat back.
- 11:30Pattersons got to be the the bell cow for now.
- 11:32You need physicality. If you're going to try to play
- 11:35this bully ball style then be physical.
- 11:37Don't have a third down back as your lead runner and you cost
- 11:40yourself 2 positions by starting the wrong guy.
- 11:43The the RPO game looked good solid.
- 11:46The mesh, the slow mesh I liked. Yes, Brandon, that was fun.
- 11:50Yeah, something different and really debated.
- 11:52Yeah, try to do something different.
- 11:55The RPO game worked. There drops there, drops all
- 11:58over the place. But for the people that are
- 11:59coming to the defense of Mark Gronowski and the drops in,
- 12:02absolutely. He had.
- 12:03Yeah, they were there. Yeah, there was a monster one
- 12:05there, Gill. Gill was wide open down the
- 12:07scene. Yeah.
- 12:08And if he. Or the IT was a slam.
- 12:09He probably goes. Yes, if he breaks that tackle,
- 12:11he's gone. There's nobody behind because
- 12:13the Iowa State played all game long.
- 12:16But to take one shot in the game against the Iowa State team, the
- 12:20way that they are playing, everybody's downhill,
- 12:22everybody's playing on their toes and they're coming right at
- 12:24you. And to take one shot down the
- 12:26field goes back to the offensive coordinator.
- 12:29Now, is he told not to do that? Is that Kirkball not allowed to
- 12:33do it? Did you miss Greg Davis?
- 12:35No, he was the worst of the. Girl you think he was?
- 12:38He was worse than Brian. Yeah, his style never worked
- 12:41with what I was. Trying to keep back.
- 12:43Yes. I never want him to go.
- 12:45I was the one. I was no.
- 12:47Keep No, you're not alone now. Oh, absolutely.
- 12:50Revisionist thinking, I mean. Number one, in a big gap between
- 12:532-3 and four. It was a game plan that didn't
- 12:56work. It's an offensive schematic
- 12:58system that isn't. And here's the thing that isn't
- 13:01talked about right now, and maybe we'll find out tomorrow
- 13:04after the second down play in the final drive for Iowa, that
- 13:08was the sack. I got 6 on 1st down real quick
- 13:10to the tight end. They get to the ball.
- 13:13A delayed blitz comes from Neil. Who was?
- 13:15Really good. He's excellent.
- 13:16He might. He's probably behind Orange,
- 13:18their second best player on defense.
- 13:20I don't. Think that's a stretch at all?
- 13:21He's outstanding. He comes on the delayed blitz,
- 13:24gets there. Dunker was late getting over.
- 13:26They use a timeout, so it's third and 11 Jennings.
- 13:30Dunker came out of the. Game.
- 13:31Yeah, I know he did. Why?
- 13:32Why did he? He was in the tent earlier in
- 13:35the ball game. Jennings Dunker is also coming
- 13:37off surgery, and it took longer, I think, than anticipated for
- 13:40him to get back and get ready for camp.
- 13:42I don't know. I don't know if there's.
- 13:44Well, Andrew on the side, Akasha, I mean, you could play
- 13:46offensive line this way. It's UMass.
- 13:48Should be able to they lost to Bryant.
- 13:51Not heating and cooling, just the university.
- 13:53But I'm not sure Bryant, who heating and cooling, couldn't
- 13:55give him a game. Absolutely.
- 13:58Getting's dunker if he's in trouble, if he's injured, if
- 14:00he's banged up. Obviously you don't play him
- 14:02this week. No, but you're without one of
- 14:04your best wide receivers. You're going to be without your
- 14:06tight end for a long time it sounds like.
- 14:08You're running back. You're without your running back
- 14:10and now you're without your best offense alignment.
- 14:13This thing is reminding me a lot of 19. 4:00 and 8:00. 1998 You
- 14:20were on the air in 1998. That was the that was awful.
- 14:241997. You know what?
- 14:25You know what it was? It was a started to be a legacy
- 14:29tarnishing year. 1997, huge expectations.
- 14:35Matt Sherman, Tavian Banks, Tim Dwight, they're all coming back.
- 14:38Bunch of pieces defensively, coming off a win against the PAC
- 14:4112 Co champion Washington in the bowl game.
- 14:44This was going to be the year and that it didn't.
- 14:48They lose a game that they had the national champions beat
- 14:51Michigan, Sherman misses a pass missions taving up the sideline
- 14:54that would have won the game. The story is punched, the wall
- 14:58broke his hand. No, really.
- 15:00They lose to Wisconsin, they lose to Northwestern.
- 15:03It was a disappointing year, 1998.
- 15:06A lot of new faces, but the programs had a good spot.
- 15:09And then we saw very quickly it wasn't last season, College
- 15:13Football Playoff, a schedule that's manageable.
- 15:15This is going to be the year that I was going to
- 15:17breakthrough. You're bringing back 10 starters
- 15:19back defensively. This is the season that's going
- 15:21to happen and it didn't. The defense was awful.
- 15:25Now you look at that schedule. With the couple of accession, I
- 15:29mean, Higgins was awful good, so was Jackson.
- 15:31You take a look at this season and what's still in front.
- 15:34Of it, find me six wins. It's not a stretch.
- 15:37It happens quicker than you think when you're in it.
- 15:41And I just caution because that was the first thought that I had
- 15:44when I started talking and flipped down the microphone
- 15:46right after the game. You see the end of the fry air
- 15:48being very similar to what might be the end of the.
- 15:50There's a lot of similarities to what we were talking about at.
- 15:54The legacy, Trent, that, that's one of my takeaways from that
- 15:57period of time. The maybe the most disappointing
- 16:01game was the last one in the Metrodome, Hayden's final game,
- 16:06as they got absolutely boat raced and looked like there was
- 16:08no Hawkeye that wanted to be there.
- 16:11Don't want it end like that. No, but it can happen quicker
- 16:14than you think. Well, he's under contract
- 16:16through when 29. Something like that.
- 16:21Here's how I see it. I don't think it'll, I mean, if,
- 16:25if it does go bad, I think Ference will do it to himself.
- 16:30I I think I read him that. I don't think he would just let
- 16:36the program go down sink to the bottom.
- 16:40I just don't. I don't think he's that type of
- 16:42person. I think he would find a way to
- 16:47just decide it's time. I I don't think he's the type
- 16:50that would just just let the the the boat sink, Do you?
- 16:54I don't unless he sees this is the end.
- 16:58So I think he would off himself. Yes, absolutely.
- 17:01I don't think that type of person.
- 17:03The pressure's not going to have to come.
- 17:04And if the wheels do fall off and they go 4:00 and 8:00 and he
- 17:08sees that there's not an end insight, I believe that Kirk
- 17:12would. If he finishes 4 and he's not
- 17:14going to the Hall of Fame. That's the furthest thing for.
- 17:19Me. No, I get it, and his mind too,
- 17:20but he's not. Right.
- 17:23He's not going to have that 60% threshold that you need.
- 17:26He's got to get 2, get the record one more, do it against
- 17:30UMass. How about these last six?
- 17:33Home to Penn State. Stop me when you think there's a
- 17:36there's an easy one. Home to Minnesota.
- 17:39Better than we thought. Yeah.
- 17:40Home to Oregon. OK, you're not stopping me at
- 17:45USC. Home to Michigan State.
- 17:49Maybe. At Nebraska.
- 17:52Yeah. Basic best case scenario too.
- 17:57Well, I don't. I wouldn't say best case
- 17:59scenario, but. Well, I mean, they're not
- 18:01beating Penn State Oregon. USCI wouldn't think so.
- 18:04If they win the other three, who are they beating in that trio?
- 18:07Right now, nobody right. But Iowa teams also improve.
- 18:10I mean the last SO. Does Oregon and Penn State and
- 18:12USC. Oregon almost got beat by an
- 18:14awful Wisconsin. They just pasted the crap they
- 18:17they pulled called off the dog. It was 69 to 3 after three
- 18:20quarters. A Big 12 team.
- 18:25Not a very good one. Work and play.
- 18:28That's a pretty good Oregon team.
- 18:30That's a pretty good Oregon team.
- 18:32Sounds like you bought some ducks at how?
- 18:33Did you know actually it was Sunday because it wasn't up on
- 18:37on Saturday night. Let's get John in here.
- 18:40We'll get Scott Dockerman coming up.
- 18:41John, thanks for being patient. What's on your mind?
- 18:45You're being quite the pessimist here.
- 18:47How Put some optimism with this quarterback?
- 18:51All. Right here's my rose colored
- 18:55glasses are on, my glass is half.
- 18:56Hang on, I was going to say, pull yourself a black and gold
- 19:00Kool-aid and let her go. Here it comes.
- 19:04This young man doubled his yardage.
- 19:06He was 44 yards. Week 188 yards.
- 19:10Week. 2 by Rutgers. He's going to be thrown for 320
- 19:14yards. Just keeps doubling every week.
- 19:16I like it, John. Okay.
- 19:17Just keep doubling it, okay? Take another straight.
- 19:20And then, all right, you mentioned how good Oregon is.
- 19:25They're probably pretty good, but Oklahoma State's terrible.
- 19:28The Big 12, remember the old Danny Green, They are what we
- 19:31thought they were line. That's the Big 12, OK, they are
- 19:35what we thought they were. They're not good.
- 19:37There's three best teams. Like most, most people, most the
- 19:41experts were picking Iowa State, Kansas State, Arizona State,
- 19:45Kansas State got beat by Army, Army just got beat by a team
- 19:49called Carlton State. OK, And that Army team beat
- 19:53Kansas State, who a lot of experts pick to win the big. 12
- 19:56What do you What do you think of Utah?
- 19:57What do you think of Utah? They'll they'll work.
- 20:01They'll probably work their way. I think they're probably, I
- 20:03don't know enough about Utah, honestly.
- 20:04Do they have any? I know they won.
- 20:06I don't know if. No, they're good.
- 20:08They got three teams. They got Texas Tech, Utah.
- 20:10I'm going to put BYU in there and maybe TCU.
- 20:13And of course, Iowa State. So you think?
- 20:15I don't think one of those guys are going.
- 20:16To creep up there and be in challenge for the Big 12 title
- 20:19then. I do.
- 20:21Yeah, I do. OK, well.
- 20:22OK, so Arizona State gets beat that's that wasn't felt the last
- 20:26place team in the SEC team last. Year, it was a bad.
- 20:30Weekend for the Big 12. Virginia loses to Ohio.
- 20:33Yeah, and Iowa State, I'm telling you on a national scene,
- 20:36we all know that's a toss up game in Iowa, but on the
- 20:39national scene that's a bad look.
- 20:41The one of your best teams in the Big 12 of plays a middle of
- 20:45the pack, the bottom half Iowa Big 10 team and has to need a 54
- 20:50yard field goal to to beat that team.
- 20:51So yeah, a lot of bad optics for the big. 12 Yeah, Thanks for the
- 20:56call, John. Look, this was a measuring stick
- 21:01weekend. I think we talked about it on
- 21:02Friday for the Big 12. It didn't go particularly well,
- 21:07let's face it. They they.
- 21:11That wasn't great. Kansas had an opportunity.
- 21:13They're up. Double defeat.
- 21:13They were and completely blew it.
- 21:16Baylor needed a missile. It was very good.
- 21:19Oh yeah, Probiula was good. Yes.
- 21:23Yeah, got their own quarterback. Now, Probiula would probably be
- 21:26terrible in Iowa system too. Let's be honest.
- 21:32You don't think so? You think Probiula in this Iowa
- 21:34offense, he'd be up, Revved up? Yeah, I don't know.
- 21:36I mean, I, I guess probably, probably so probably.
- 21:42I mean, they've ruined a bunch of them seemingly they've ruined
- 21:47a bunch of them. The Big 12 this weekend had a
- 21:50chance to put themselves in the conversation as you know what,
- 21:53we deserve it. We we're better than everybody
- 21:56thinks that multiple bid league, multiple bid league and it
- 22:00didn't go according to plan, putting it mildly, Trent.
- 22:03Lose if Mississippi State. Taylor had a win.
- 22:06That was nice. That was a good win.
- 22:08Their defense, though, is ha oh man, the middle of their defense
- 22:12is rough and Mississippi State proves to be again the worst
- 22:15team. The SEC.
- 22:16That's going to be a bad how? Many.
- 22:17How many did they bring in like 50 new faces to that team?
- 22:20I think a. Lot of people do that.
- 22:22Well they got rid of 50 garbage players.
- 22:25But if Mississippi states 3:00 and 9:00, it's going to be a big
- 22:28issue for the Big 12. Unless Arizona State's just in
- 22:31the middle. I think Arizona State's in the
- 22:32middle. I do.
- 22:33I think Arizona State's kind of one of those middle of the pack
- 22:36teams. Baylor, nice win.
- 22:38Iowa State, obviously that's a nice win.
- 22:40I don't care what John says, that's a nice win.
- 22:42Kansas had them if it would have showed at them.
- 22:45West Virginia falling, not good. K State getting pasted not good
- 22:51and BYU beating Stanford. Jesse then Kelly.
- 22:56Jesse, welcome to the program. How are you?
- 22:58Good. How are you guys?
- 22:59Good. What's up just calling?
- 23:02In I'm a cyclone fan here. Good to hear from you.
- 23:04I just got AI just got a message for the salty Iowa fans that
- 23:09call in and say, oh, Iowa State's not a good.
- 23:13They play in a horrible conference, guys, guess what?
- 23:16The team you cheer for. No, no.
- 23:19No low average you're. Talking to the, You're talking
- 23:21to the callers, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:23Not, not, not you guys. I'm saying the Hawkeye fan, like
- 23:26how can you bash a conference, the team that just beat you?
- 23:29It's. Not the lucky cheer, for it's
- 23:32not the point. Jonathan was trying to.
- 23:33Make for when the team you cheer for is below average.
- 23:36Like you're bashing our conference.
- 23:38I guess I did the same thing when you guys played in the Big
- 23:4010 W. My point is, it's just, it's
- 23:42just nonsense. Yeah, no, it's fans.
- 23:44Love it. Jesse, thanks for the call.
- 23:45Appreciate it. Let's get Kelly in here.
- 23:47Kelly, how are you? Hey guys.
- 23:50Hey, Kelly, thanks for covering another course for covering
- 23:53Hawkeye fan here now. But here's here's the positives
- 23:57I saw from week 1 to Week 2. Granowski, I saw a lot better
- 24:00accuracy. I'll say.
- 24:02Now here's here's what I didn't get to go look at was what was
- 24:06going on downfield and really getting detailed on.
- 24:08That I'd love to know that several.
- 24:11Yeah, because there was several plays where Gretzky had all day
- 24:14back. He did, but that's how Iowa
- 24:17State plays defence, though. That's how the clones play
- 24:19defence. They'll never lead the league in
- 24:21sacks. They they drop back, drop guys
- 24:24in the coverage. Yep.
- 24:25And they were daring them to do that.
- 24:27I I have to believe, and I didn't see it either.
- 24:29That's one of the things you miss about not being hype.
- 24:32Above is where there where there guys open and Gronowski wouldn't
- 24:35pull the trigger or where I was State.
- 24:37Did Iowa State have them locked down?
- 24:40100% and that's what I was hoping maybe Trent had seen too,
- 24:43is if were there guys open downfield that we didn't pull
- 24:46the trigger on that read right away because Gronowski threw the
- 24:50ball better than he did week one.
- 24:51That's I mean. Bar wasn't set real high, but
- 24:54Yep Yep. Yep.
- 24:55And with all day back there the way that they were blocking, we
- 24:58have got to be able to go score points and that and that's
- 25:02that's my thought too. So not happy about it, but I
- 25:05thought Gronowski looked better than Week 1 and I'll take it
- 25:07back to you guys. Thank you, Kelly.
- 25:08Appreciate the call. Let's get a couple more in here,
- 25:11Steve. Hi, Steve.
- 25:11Thanks for being patient. Hey, I'm a huge Hawkeye fan and
- 25:15I'm pissed but I thought our offense was boring before but
- 25:22now our new wrinkle. Is the slow mesh mesh it's
- 25:29different? Makes it?
- 25:31Of course it is, but that that's the new wrinkle to make.
- 25:35A more exciting offense is a slow mesh, so our best 2 plays
- 25:40are the quarterback sneak. And the slow mesh.
- 25:43Mesh go Hawks it's. An interesting call.
- 25:46Thanks, Justin. I appreciate it.
- 25:49It's a new wrinkle, I'll give them that.
- 25:52Right. Are they going to do something
- 25:53with it or is it going to be two plays a game?
- 25:56You can't overuse it, no, no. But how many?
- 25:59How many? How many you want to see?
- 26:00810. It's really different.
- 26:02It is. I remember when you talked about
- 26:04it for the first time, maybe about a month ago.
- 26:05I'm thinking what are you talking about?
- 26:08And then you watched Wake Forest and saw the plays.
- 26:11Justin and Andy, then we'll have to get a break.
- 26:13Justin, how are you? Yeah.
- 26:16Hey, guys. What's up?
- 26:19Biggest problem I think with like the Hawkeyes is it's the
- 26:21same thing every time. We keep losing the same way Kirk
- 26:25refuses to try anything like special out of the ordinary.
- 26:30It's like especially that second to last drive was the most
- 26:33frustrating because it's like Iowa State was loading the box.
- 26:36Just try to go one-on-one. Like if their D backs beat us,
- 26:39then they beat us. Like Iowa State wasn't playing
- 26:43very well either. Brocco hasn't been good other
- 26:45than the game against South Dakota.
- 26:47Like he wasn't very good against Kansas State is passing numbers
- 26:50were mediocre like he barely but.
- 26:53Wouldn't you sign for those? Yeah, that's that's the thing.
- 26:57Iowa is better at 3/4 of the positions compared to Iowa
- 27:00State, except for they are too last year they were whooping
- 27:03them. OK, I.
- 27:04Thought we're talking. About this year's team.
- 27:06But given this year, whose offensive line would you rather
- 27:09have? Whose defensive line would you
- 27:10rather have? Maybe they have a couple better
- 27:12cornerbacks. Linebackers.
- 27:15Well, OK, maybe one or two of those maybe.
- 27:18Yeah, I'm still saying that's still 2/3.
- 27:20Dominic is the best defensive lineman on the field.
- 27:23Yeah, they, but you know what? Like they didn't.
- 27:26Gronowski had plenty of time to throw.
- 27:28All that's again, that's how Iowa State plays defense.
- 27:31I know, but he's he's also been slow.
- 27:33That first game against Albany, I was sitting in front row
- 27:36watching that game. He was mentally slow.
- 27:38And I think it all comes down to Kirk.
- 27:40He had messes up every quarterback.
- 27:42He gets him scared, he gets him like don't turn, don't turn the
- 27:45ball over, don't make a mistake. And that's what like.
- 27:48I see this with kids. When I play, when I coach
- 27:50soccer, the kids freeze up because you tell them to do too
- 27:53many things and they instead just letting them play.
- 27:57There's no way all these quarterbacks have sucked.
- 27:59He had this 1st 20 years. He had all these guys go to the
- 28:01pros. Sure, they were backup QBs, but
- 28:04from banks were all Heisman runner up, Tate Stansey, TJ
- 28:09Beathard, Stanley, all these guys were backup quarterbacks in
- 28:12the league. Like we were good for the 1st 20
- 28:14years at quarterbacks. This whole thing like Iowa, such
- 28:17a quarterback is only in the last five years.
- 28:19So it's it's driving me nuts because like it's not that hard
- 28:22to just be average. Like every other team has thrown
- 28:24for 200 yards in the last year. We can't even do it for like 6
- 28:28years now. It's been unbelievable.
- 28:29Yes, Justin, thanks for the call.
- 28:31Appreciate it, Andy. Then we'll get a break.
- 28:33Hi, Andy, How are you? I'm pretty good, man.
- 28:36Real quick to two things. One, if you're going to go
- 28:40shopping in the portal, let's not get a guy.
- 28:42I'm an Iowa fan and I root for Iowa State unless they're
- 28:45playing Iowa. Maybe I'm weird, but I want
- 28:48teams to do good that are in the state of Iowa, right?
- 28:51Here's the thing. When you're going to go in the
- 28:53portal and you're going to look for a quarterback, let's mean
- 28:56think about this for a minute. This second time we've done.
- 29:00This second time you've got one that needs a surgery before he
- 29:02can play, and whatever doctor is clearing these guys at that
- 29:08university needs to get his license revoked.
- 29:10Andy, the infuriating part about that is I never thought of that
- 29:14the day after they announced his signing, found out that he had
- 29:17to go under the knife. That was a bad look.
- 29:19That was a bad look for the Swarm Collective.
- 29:21That was a bad look I thought for the football program.
- 29:23And doesn't go through spring slow.
- 29:25We heard nothing but terrible things during August camp and
- 29:28here we are. Bad luck.
- 29:30Yes, and and and and and another thing, man, like people can say
- 29:35whatever they want about Dominic Orange and whoever.
- 29:39I mean, man, if that team's the 17th team in the country,
- 29:43rivalry game or not, they beat you by three.
- 29:45Iowa held them to under 20 points and under 250 yards.
- 29:48You shouldn't lose the damn ball game.
- 29:51Andy, thanks for the call. Appreciate it.
- 29:53All right, get a break. Come back.
- 29:54Scott Dockman will join us. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 29:57Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 29:59Network. Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back.
- 30:06Iowa Sports Radio Network with you until just before 2:00.
- 30:11Let's get Scott Doctorman from The Athletic.
- 30:13He was in the press box on Saturday, Jack Trice watching
- 30:17Iowa State and Iowa, Clyde and Cyhawk.
- 30:20Doc Trenton. Ken, thank you for coming on.
- 30:22Good to speak with you. Well, 1613 back-to-back years, a
- 30:2654 yard game winner, although not right at the end.
- 30:29There's about a minute left this time, but nonetheless, 54 yarder
- 30:34again from Conradie. Your take away from watching
- 30:37that game. Maybe your number one take away
- 30:39Doc would be. What if you can put it into one?
- 30:43That's well, that's that's gonna be tough to put into one little
- 30:46thought, but I would say that, you know, I, I'm probably in the
- 30:50minority on this, but I think both teams are really good.
- 30:53That's what I came away with. I think both teams have their
- 30:56defenses came to play like really well, although their
- 30:59offenses persevered, they adapted to adversity and, and
- 31:04fought really hard and, and I thought that, you know, hey,
- 31:08team at home that's ranked one by three points, which is what
- 31:12they were favored for. So I, you know, I'm not going
- 31:15to, I don't think that this is, I know most people are
- 31:18overreacting, especially on the Iowa side because because Iowa
- 31:21lost. I'm not on that that bandwagon
- 31:24though. I, I think they play pretty well
- 31:25for the most part. And, and I think Iowa State
- 31:29weather the storm. At one point it looked like it
- 31:31was going to go into Iowa's favor, but yet they were able to
- 31:34put together a pretty strong drive with some lucky bounces
- 31:38to, to hit a 54 yard field goal to win.
- 31:41That's that's tough to do 2 pretty even teams just like last
- 31:45year, Iowa State one. But I I think both are are still
- 31:49in pretty good shape. Iowa State made the plays,
- 31:52including the double deflection into the hands of hate into Gabe
- 31:55Berkel. That proved really to be the
- 31:57difference in the game. Doc, when you take a look at the
- 32:00Cyclone win, what it does for them, A lot of people had them
- 32:03one and two at this point. Instead they're three and O.
- 32:05Now you got this weird road trip down to Arkansas State to take
- 32:08them on before a bye week. Just get the win, getting a four
- 32:11and O. What does it say to you about
- 32:13this Iowa State program and having a trip across the pond,
- 32:17coming back, doing what they did a week ago and then winning a
- 32:19rivalry game, 2 rivalry wins already.
- 32:22This program seems like they're hubbing along and kind of
- 32:24whatever hurdles you put in front of them.
- 32:26It seems like Matt Campbell has an answer.
- 32:29They have a they have an incredible amount of mental
- 32:31toughness and it's something that's come through time and
- 32:34time again and it, and it starts at the top.
- 32:37I mean, you you look at statistically that Rocco Beck
- 32:42did not have a great day to not have like a 19 to 20 performance
- 32:46like he did against South Dakota the week before.
- 32:49But he completed 2/3 of his passes and he was effective when
- 32:52he needed to be, didn't make any mistakes.
- 32:53And and again, it's a really good team and probably the best
- 32:57defense that he'll face all year.
- 32:58And, and I thought that overall, you know, that's that's the key
- 33:03hallmark to what this program is right now under Matt Campbell
- 33:06and under Rocco back. There's just incredible
- 33:10perseverance and mental toughness.
- 33:11I mean, they're eight and one in their last one score game, 91
- 33:15score games dating back multiple years.
- 33:18And when the game looked like it was starting to go the other
- 33:22route, they were able to straighten it out and make it
- 33:24happen. And and that's just not from,
- 33:27you know, the guys on the field in one day.
- 33:29That's, that's a cumulative effect of being able to do do
- 33:32this over and over and over again in tough situations.
- 33:34And, and, and I wrote on Sunday that for years, you know, Iowa
- 33:41State, it kind of looked up to Kansas State and Iowa in that
- 33:43regard. They've lost a lot of games.
- 33:45Some of them are really close, excruciating almost to the point
- 33:48of they were the team that was going to make the mistake in the
- 33:51big moment and that's what's going to cost them.
- 33:54On the flip side. Now it's more the other way
- 33:57around that Iowa State is the one that you know, if the time
- 34:00is is coming down the stretch, whether it's a doubling against
- 34:03Kansas State or Saturday at Jack Trice against Iowa, that they're
- 34:08the team that's going to make these game-winning plays.
- 34:11And I think that's a testament to everybody that's involved on
- 34:15on the cyclone side. It's becoming apparent to me,
- 34:18Doc, watching this team that over the, we'll say the last, I
- 34:21don't know, 10 years or so decade or so.
- 34:24Well, Iowa hasn't had a great wide receiver.
- 34:26They've certainly had more than their share of great tight ends.
- 34:29Many of them are still playing on Sundays.
- 34:32They don't have that this year. And and when I watched this
- 34:35offense for Iowa, it seems to stick out that, you know, the
- 34:39the tight end position saved them over the last decade so
- 34:42many times because they could count on, you know, fill in the
- 34:45blank tight end, whoever you want it to be.
- 34:47And they don't have that this year, which I think maybe is one
- 34:50of the overlooked factors on this offense.
- 34:54That's fair for Iowa. I, you know, I like the last
- 34:58couple of years, but it's also been fair when you have, you
- 35:02know, Luke Lachey, who was hurt and broke his leg a couple years
- 35:05ago. And then last year it seemed to
- 35:06not really ever catch on. Addison Ostringa was only out, I
- 35:10don't know, maybe a little too sweeping with Addison Ostringa,
- 35:14who's now out for a long time, if he comes back at all this
- 35:18year. He only had five quarters.
- 35:22So I don't know that I would go too far and know what my
- 35:26evaluation of him. I thought he was going to be a
- 35:28pretty good tight end. And we'll see what that means
- 35:30with Zach Ortworth or DJ Bonnamay or and, you know,
- 35:35Hayden Large. I don't think it's quite like
- 35:37that in that position. But yeah, I don't see anybody
- 35:40right now on their roster that's going to be necessarily an NFL
- 35:44draft pick tomorrow. And, and that is something that
- 35:48they kind of needed. But, you know, I still, I think
- 35:51this offense right now is still a work in progress, to say the
- 35:54least. I think there's still a lot of
- 35:56chemistry issues and and they're still feeling themselves out.
- 36:00But they did show a lot of guts and and to be able to grind out
- 36:04the drives they did, I thought spoke well for the program.
- 36:08I know people think, oh, you know, the swing of this
- 36:11existential crisis of fire ference, it's time to move on.
- 36:16I just think is it gets kind of old and repetitive.
- 36:20You lost a good game and on the road it gets a good team move
- 36:24on. They always do.
- 36:25They always respond well to adversity.
- 36:28And I, I think right now they're, they have a lot of
- 36:30growth right now that needs to take place in the passing game.
- 36:33Yeah, definitely Kirk Ference, one of his greatest strengths,
- 36:35being able to punch out of that corner and he's done it time in
- 36:37and time out with this football program.
- 36:40Before we run out of time, our last couple of minutes here with
- 36:42you, Mark Gournowski, what you saw from the Hawkeye
- 36:45quarterback, an improvement, not an elite level play, but what
- 36:49you saw from him against a good Iowa State defense.
- 36:52Yeah, there's some limitations that I don't know that I knew or
- 36:56could observe before he came to Iowa.
- 36:59I mean, a lot of that is centered around the talent that
- 37:01he that he has now or and talent he's facing as much as anything.
- 37:05I mean, you can get get up for one game or something at South
- 37:08Dakota State and and that's really about it.
- 37:11But you know, his, I think he's more limited in his arm then
- 37:17maybe I had thought maybe not as strong, maybe not quite as
- 37:22accurate, but he does have a lot of guts and he is a tough kid.
- 37:26And, and that was proven too. He's got, he's one of the, he
- 37:29has one of the most, I think he's 3rd and rushing yards among
- 37:32Big 10 quarterbacks. But he had to play Iowa State,
- 37:36You know, the passing game, he was victimized by 4 drops in the
- 37:39first half. And I think three of them are
- 37:41critical and that has to change. You cannot do that if you're a
- 37:46wide receiver and you're running a slant route on the road and
- 37:51you're pined, you know, and if you're Jacob Gill, you got to
- 37:54make that catch period. And and then there.
- 37:57But there were times when Mark Gronowski's fundamentals are
- 38:00flawed and he needed, he needs more than a year to get those
- 38:04things straightened out and certainly more than a fall.
- 38:07And he's, yeah, he's throwing off his back foot towards the
- 38:10sideline. The interception was not his
- 38:12fault. That was Kate Region, who I
- 38:15thought had the worst game of anybody in.
- 38:17The whole. Stadium, I mean multiple reasons
- 38:20he slipped, which enabled the DB, you know, Cooper to jump the
- 38:24route and you know, maybe it was an incomplete pass, you know,
- 38:28but it certainly would have been an interception, I don't think
- 38:30had he not fell down and and so overall, you know, there's
- 38:34there's some things he needs to work out.
- 38:36I think Tim Lester has to help him with his, you know, with the
- 38:40scheme and, and with the play calling to emphasize his
- 38:43strengths and minimize his weaknesses.
- 38:45But I think that there's something to work with there
- 38:48that I wouldn't have said maybe even a week ago.
- 38:50And, and, and I think that going forward, they'll be OK there.
- 38:54I don't know about great, but they'll be OK.
- 38:56Doc, we're out of time, my friend.
- 38:57Thanks for doing this. Appreciate it.
- 38:59Apologize for being late, but we had busy phone banks here this
- 39:02morning. We'll talk with you next Monday.
