- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:19Speaker 1: eighty nine, and today we're back for another rut Fresh
- 0:22Speaker 1: Radio episode in which we're getting from the field updates
- 0:25Speaker 1: from all the country on current dear activity, dear behavior,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and the tactics that are working right now. Welcome to
- 0:38Speaker 1: the Wired to Hunt podcast. This is episode three eighty nine.
- 0:42Speaker 1: This is rout Fresh Radio. But this is not Mark Kenyon.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Mark can't join us tonight. He is out helping further
- 0:49Speaker 1: track deer. But Mark did tell me to tell you
- 0:53Speaker 1: that you're not gonna want to miss tomorrow's episode of
- 0:56Speaker 1: the podcast. He has an update for us on is
- 1:00Speaker 1: target buck Tran, but I'm not going to say any
- 1:04Speaker 1: more than that. If Mark were joining me, um, we
- 1:07Speaker 1: would certainly discuss how late November is still a good
- 1:10Speaker 1: time to be in the woods. Mark would have something
- 1:13Speaker 1: motivational for you about how you shouldn't give up and
- 1:16Speaker 1: the rut is still happening, so you're just gonna have
- 1:19Speaker 1: to use your imagination on what he would say, if
- 1:22Speaker 1: you don't want to use your imagination, go over to
- 1:24Speaker 1: the media dot com and type in how to kill
- 1:27Speaker 1: a white tail buck in late November. Mark wrote that
- 1:30Speaker 1: article last November, but it applies to this year as well,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and it talks about how you can get it done
- 1:36Speaker 1: during the second half of the rut and why some
- 1:39Speaker 1: big buck hunters actually prefer this to any other part
- 1:43Speaker 1: of the season. Another article is publishing tomorrow, November nineteen
- 1:47Speaker 1: on the media dot Com from Tony Peterson, and that
- 1:50Speaker 1: is called how to kill a white tailed buck during
- 1:53Speaker 1: the second half of the Rut. In it, Tony talks
- 1:56Speaker 1: about how you need to change two things to be
- 1:59Speaker 1: successful this time of year. One of them is your
- 2:02Speaker 1: expectations and the other is your strategy. So check out
- 2:05Speaker 1: that article tomorrow afternoon and you're gonna learn whatever you
- 2:09Speaker 1: would have picked up from hearing me and Mark talk
- 2:12Speaker 1: about in this intro. All right now, I'm gonna get
- 2:14Speaker 1: back to the regularly scheduled programming and the hunters that
- 2:18Speaker 1: we talked to you this week are Bryce Lamley from Nebraska,
- 2:21Speaker 1: Brett Joy from New Hampshire, Josh Rooker from Illinois, and
- 2:26Speaker 1: Cadence Starns in Mississippi. These guys are full of good
- 2:29Speaker 1: information and optimism, which is really key for killing a
- 2:34Speaker 1: buck in late November. So let's get to our interviews.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Our interviews this week are presented by Trophy Ridge. Head
- 2:40Speaker 1: over to trophy ridge dot com to check out their
- 2:43Speaker 1: new lineup of top of the line releases from t
- 2:48Speaker 1: handles to risk releases. They have a premium option for
- 2:51Speaker 1: everyone that's trophy ridge dot com. Alright, and joining us
- 2:56Speaker 1: on the line first is Bryce Lamley from Nebraska. Now
- 2:59Speaker 1: Bryce in Asca, what would you say the bucket activity
- 3:01Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten? Honestly,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and you know, I'm usually conservative about this, but I
- 3:08Speaker 1: would say a nine, and I would say it's been
- 3:10Speaker 1: a nine since about November three. I averaged over uh
- 3:14Speaker 1: six point I think at six point five deer per
- 3:17Speaker 1: day six point five bucks per day um during that
- 3:21Speaker 1: time period hunting morning and evening. But that's still a
- 3:24Speaker 1: lot of bucks for me to see in an area
- 3:27Speaker 1: that doesn't have much visibility at all. What would you
- 3:30Speaker 1: label this phase of the run in late November in Nebraska? Um,
- 3:35Speaker 1: late November. It's just seems to me like we're on
- 3:38Speaker 1: the tail end of the lockdown, and uh, you know
- 3:42Speaker 1: it's I think some of the bucks are just recouping
- 3:45Speaker 1: their energy and laying low, and others are popping back
- 3:48Speaker 1: up and still anxious for more. I still think we're
- 3:51Speaker 1: going to be seeing some deer in this this time period.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I like to get closer to some food sources and
- 3:59Speaker 1: where do they're going to food sources and bucks are
- 4:02Speaker 1: trying to cut them off. You mentioned food sources. What
- 4:05Speaker 1: food sources do you think are relevant right now in
- 4:08Speaker 1: the Great Plains? Well, I think obviously your corn and
- 4:13Speaker 1: if there's still some beans left. Um, we've also got
- 4:16Speaker 1: some mouthfouth and milet, but not in my area. I
- 4:19Speaker 1: wish we had that. If the corn and beans are
- 4:22Speaker 1: are harvest at and if the corn is dis under,
- 4:25Speaker 1: there's not much cover out there, and so it seems
- 4:28Speaker 1: to me like a lot of the feeding is done nocturnally,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and so you know, the sun sets and there's nothing
- 4:33Speaker 1: out in the field. Sunrises, there's nothing out in the field,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but they've been there overnight. That said, you might find
- 4:40Speaker 1: some interesting food sources back in the timber and one
- 4:44Speaker 1: of them that I kind of found by accident near
- 4:46Speaker 1: one of my really good stands this fall was a
- 4:50Speaker 1: locust tree that had dropped a ton of seed pods,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and every deer though and buck that came by stopped
- 4:56Speaker 1: for a minute, two minutes, and sometimes even an hour
- 4:59Speaker 1: to gobblowing up seed pods from those locusts. And I think,
- 5:03Speaker 1: if you've got you know, it's a situation like that
- 5:06Speaker 1: where maybe deer are hungry during the day but not
- 5:09Speaker 1: a lot of egg type food or acorns left, they
- 5:13Speaker 1: might be gravitating towards something like a locust tree, or
- 5:17Speaker 1: maybe like if you do still have acorns left something
- 5:19Speaker 1: like that, what do you expect to see for signmaking
- 5:22Speaker 1: during the week of Thanksgiving. Well, it seems to me
- 5:25Speaker 1: like that's kind of the time when maybe bucks will
- 5:27Speaker 1: start coming back to the scrapes. Uh, My trail camras
- 5:31Speaker 1: over scrapes didn't show much in the last couple of weeks,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and I think deer were busy chasing the real thing. Um,
- 5:37Speaker 1: if they did, they walked right through them. They didn't
- 5:39Speaker 1: really stop and for the most part, and so I
- 5:42Speaker 1: think it's kind of a time where they start revisiting scrapes.
- 5:44Speaker 1: It's also a good place to maybe take inventory and
- 5:48Speaker 1: if you're trying to figure out what has survived thus far.
- 5:51Speaker 1: We're in the middle of our gun season here in
- 5:53Speaker 1: Nebraska right now, and so I'm always curious about Thanksgiving
- 5:56Speaker 1: time to try to start taking inventory and seeing which
- 5:59Speaker 1: bucks made it and which bucks I still have to
- 6:02Speaker 1: hunt in into late November and through the month of December.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I know you've had a lot of success bow hunting
- 6:08Speaker 1: from the ground. What do those setups look like during
- 6:11Speaker 1: the second half of the rut? Well, I, I would
- 6:14Speaker 1: say from the ground and from low tree stands. I
- 6:18Speaker 1: have three stands six eight ten ft probably the majority
- 6:21Speaker 1: of my stands or eight to ten ft. And um
- 6:24Speaker 1: also a lot of grounds set ups too, And I
- 6:27Speaker 1: think again you need to be if you're hunting from
- 6:29Speaker 1: the ground, you might want to consider places that don't
- 6:33Speaker 1: have a ton of dough traffic because eventually you may
- 6:36Speaker 1: get picked off, or if you do, it's it's passing through,
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's not loitering around. It gives you a better chance
- 6:42Speaker 1: of remaining undetected. I also like, um, those areas maybe
- 6:46Speaker 1: where um either where were those areas where does like
- 6:50Speaker 1: to hide from bucks? And maybe that might be the
- 6:54Speaker 1: heaviest cover And on one of my timbers. It's a
- 6:56Speaker 1: patch of feeders that you can barely crawl through, and
- 6:58Speaker 1: so I like to be down wind does something like that.
- 7:01Speaker 1: So a buck cruising by might come through on the
- 7:03Speaker 1: down wind side of of that cover using his nose
- 7:06Speaker 1: to check what he can't hardly see. And if I'm
- 7:09Speaker 1: downwind of him, I've got a chance, and he's probably
- 7:12Speaker 1: not paying a whole lot of attention to me. We
- 7:14Speaker 1: had an ice storm here in Nebraska that took a
- 7:17Speaker 1: lot of trees and branches down, and it is totally
- 7:20Speaker 1: remade the forest where I hunt, and I think that's
- 7:24Speaker 1: going to offer actually some more opportunity for places to hide,
- 7:29Speaker 1: um when the guys wanting to try to hunt from
- 7:30Speaker 1: the ground. When you're hunting in late November, do you
- 7:33Speaker 1: historically expect to see better movement in the morning or
- 7:36Speaker 1: the evening. Well, it's interesting in in the November one
- 7:41Speaker 1: through about November fourteen period, I was seeing a little
- 7:44Speaker 1: bit better option the first two hours of morning and
- 7:46Speaker 1: then the very last hour of the evening, and then
- 7:49Speaker 1: of course any time in between tween. But those were
- 7:52Speaker 1: the best time praises, the very first two hours, in
- 7:55Speaker 1: the last hour, it seems like after the rug that
- 7:58Speaker 1: doesn't really change a whole for me. I guess I
- 8:02Speaker 1: look at uh seeing less daytime activity the middle of
- 8:06Speaker 1: the day, and so I'm able to hunt, cut my
- 8:08Speaker 1: hunts a little bit shorter. I don't have to stay
- 8:11Speaker 1: out all day and that type of thing. If you
- 8:14Speaker 1: have a good food source and it gets cold boats,
- 8:17Speaker 1: then I think the evenings are better because then I
- 8:19Speaker 1: think that they're more anxious to, you know, replenish their
- 8:22Speaker 1: stores and and get out there and try to put
- 8:25Speaker 1: the weight back on. And if you've got a good
- 8:27Speaker 1: food source like a standing cornfield or maybe a cornfield
- 8:31Speaker 1: that's not been just under or some standing beans, I
- 8:33Speaker 1: think that would be a gold mine, especially in the
- 8:36Speaker 1: evening going forward. Then in this next week or so,
- 8:39Speaker 1: what do you think that bucke activity is going to
- 8:40Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Nebraska?
- 8:44Speaker 1: I still give it in nine. I'm seeing a lot
- 8:46Speaker 1: of bucks showing up on social media. They're getting killed
- 8:48Speaker 1: gun ambo and uh. I've always liked that Thanksgiving time
- 8:52Speaker 1: prade all the way through about December tenth or twelfth
- 8:55Speaker 1: or fifteen. It just seems like that the bucks that
- 8:58Speaker 1: survive our gun seas and they're still active and still
- 9:01Speaker 1: trying to find some more of them. All right, Bryce,
- 9:04Speaker 1: great information, good luck with the rest of your season,
- 9:06Speaker 1: and thanks for joining me. Oh, thank you, thank you
- 9:09Speaker 1: very much, all right and joining us on the line.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Next is Cadence Stars from Rugged Whitetail in Mississippi, now
- 9:16Speaker 1: Caden in Mississippi. What would you say the Buck activities
- 9:19Speaker 1: been lately on the scale of one to ten? Lately,
- 9:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it's been around a four. It's been
- 9:25Speaker 1: pretty pretty warm weather here in Mississippi. Um, they have
- 9:29Speaker 1: been on their feet a whole lot. I have been
- 9:31Speaker 1: seeing some get up kind of early. It depends on
- 9:34Speaker 1: how close you are the betting. Um not seeing any
- 9:37Speaker 1: on the food sources until well after dark. But I'm
- 9:41Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna put it out as a four. Uh,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I just haven't there was a whole lot because of
- 9:45Speaker 1: the weather. But hopefully that picks up because a little
- 9:48Speaker 1: bit of a cool weather coming in. Are you still
- 9:50Speaker 1: seeing bachelor groups together? Then? Yeah, I actually have. The
- 9:54Speaker 1: other day I saw a few Bucks grouped together, and um,
- 9:57Speaker 1: me and me and Dad both have been to you
- 10:00Speaker 1: up still together. Haven't really seen them separating yet. Are
- 10:03Speaker 1: you seeing any signmaking right now in Mississippi, actually seen
- 10:07Speaker 1: a lot of scrapes opening up. Um, I've been seen
- 10:10Speaker 1: a lot of rubs, but here in the past week,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I've seen a lot of scrapes been opening up, and um,
- 10:16Speaker 1: a lot of rubs getting laid down. A lot of
- 10:19Speaker 1: big tracks are starting to get laid down. Two during
- 10:22Speaker 1: this very early pre rut in Mississippi, are you primarily
- 10:26Speaker 1: hunting evenings? Are you hunting mornings as well? I'm hunting both.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I tend to scout a lot in the morning. I've
- 10:33Speaker 1: got a lot of public so I've messed outing a
- 10:35Speaker 1: lot of publics in the morning, and I'll hunt the
- 10:37Speaker 1: evening more just because it's been kind of warm and
- 10:40Speaker 1: i haven't seen them on the street a whole lot
- 10:41Speaker 1: right now. But I'm gonna start hunting mornings here pretty soon.
- 10:45Speaker 1: When you're scouting on public land in Mississippi in season,
- 10:49Speaker 1: what sorts of things are you looking for right now?
- 10:52Speaker 1: Right now? I'm I'm looking for the sign. I'm looking
- 10:54Speaker 1: for fresh sign of scrapes right now, rubs and fresh rubs,
- 10:58Speaker 1: looking for big tracks. I usually try to stick to
- 11:02Speaker 1: the transitions and then I'll follow the sign back from
- 11:04Speaker 1: there to betting. Um, if I find then a country
- 11:07Speaker 1: that that there's a lot of you know, sign under
- 11:11Speaker 1: might get that. But I just try to get close
- 11:13Speaker 1: to betting. What does an ideal betting location look like
- 11:17Speaker 1: in Mississippi? Well, it all depends on where you're at,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you know, um some some places. It varies across the
- 11:25Speaker 1: states that I'm trying to get out. Um. I try
- 11:29Speaker 1: to get pretty close to thick areas. I said, I
- 11:31Speaker 1: found the bucks that they like really thick areas or
- 11:34Speaker 1: places far away from hunters, tend where they came to be.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Where are your trail cameras placed right now? I've got
- 11:41Speaker 1: a few cameras placed on scrapes. Um, I have a
- 11:45Speaker 1: few on the trail that exiting betting. I don't really
- 11:49Speaker 1: don't learn a lot of cameras, but when I do,
- 11:52Speaker 1: I used to keep them on the scrapes. I try
- 11:53Speaker 1: to keep them far away so I don't, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: bump any deer out. You mentioned that you're not really
- 11:58Speaker 1: focused on food sources. Yet when does that change for you?
- 12:02Speaker 1: It will change as we get into January. Really, Um,
- 12:06Speaker 1: I just I don't stick close to food. I found
- 12:08Speaker 1: that the bucks, and it all depends on where you're at.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Some places do good, but I found that the bucks
- 12:15Speaker 1: don't usually come out to right at dark and you
- 12:17Speaker 1: need to be close to that bedding and um. But
- 12:20Speaker 1: into January, I will get closer to food and stay
- 12:24Speaker 1: on food or even early season, uh like right out
- 12:26Speaker 1: of the gate the first the first week in October,
- 12:29Speaker 1: I'll hunt for sendage or I'll haunt the A country
- 12:31Speaker 1: is chopping. Do you do any calling during this phase
- 12:34Speaker 1: of the rut in Mississippi? Not really, I found dear here,
- 12:40Speaker 1: they really don't react. I mean they do react a
- 12:42Speaker 1: little bit to Colin. So right now I'm not doing
- 12:44Speaker 1: any column. But once you get into the peak lut,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I will do a little bit of column, but mostly
- 12:49Speaker 1: just grunts or even a doe that's just bleep, But
- 12:53Speaker 1: but nothing the rattling or anything like that. Going forward,
- 12:56Speaker 1: then this sex week or so, what do you think
- 12:58Speaker 1: that bucket activity is going to be on the skill
- 13:00Speaker 1: of one to ten in Mississippi, I'm gonna put it
- 13:03Speaker 1: on a seven. Uh. The tool of weather came in
- 13:05Speaker 1: a little bit, so I'm thinking they're gonna get on
- 13:08Speaker 1: the feet a little bit earlier and as we get
- 13:10Speaker 1: closer to the rut. I think they're gonna start cruising
- 13:12Speaker 1: around a little bit more looking for those early days. Alright, Caden,
- 13:16Speaker 1: a lot of season for you to go in Mississippi.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Good luck and thanks for joining me. Thank you alright
- 13:21Speaker 1: and joining us on the line. Next is Josh Rooker
- 13:24Speaker 1: from Advantage White Tail in Illinois. Now, Josh in Illinois,
- 13:28Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activity has been lately
- 13:30Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. Right now, I
- 13:33Speaker 1: would see on the scale one of ten, it's probably
- 13:34Speaker 1: about a seven. We've seen some really good activity in
- 13:39Speaker 1: some parts of the state, um Our teaching Advantage right
- 13:42Speaker 1: til team actually hunts different couple parts of the state.
- 13:46Speaker 1: The west central part has been a little bit slower
- 13:49Speaker 1: the last week are so here um and then but
- 13:52Speaker 1: the northwest corner and Joe Davis County were the other
- 13:55Speaker 1: half our team hunts activity has been really good. We've
- 13:58Speaker 1: been seeing a lot of deer. Majority of the bucks
- 14:01Speaker 1: we've been seeing have been cruising looking for you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: these last doors of the of the rut season here
- 14:08Speaker 1: um and we've been seeing all age class A box,
- 14:11Speaker 1: a year and a halfs, two and a half, three
- 14:13Speaker 1: and a half, four and a halfs and an older
- 14:15Speaker 1: deer as well. UM. More recently, some of the more
- 14:19Speaker 1: mature deer have been with those UM. So they've been
- 14:23Speaker 1: a little bit difficult, uh, I guess the call apt
- 14:26Speaker 1: They haven't really been responding much to calling, But most
- 14:30Speaker 1: of the younger deer have been very very receptive to calling,
- 14:34Speaker 1: whether it be a dobe bleat or a buck grunt
- 14:38Speaker 1: or even rattling for that matter. If you were to
- 14:41Speaker 1: label this phase of the rod Danny Illinois, what would
- 14:44Speaker 1: you call it? I hate to use the word lockdown
- 14:47Speaker 1: because it's not something we really believe in. But I
- 14:50Speaker 1: will say that the most mature bucks that we've seen
- 14:55Speaker 1: recently have been with those. Again, they have not been
- 14:58Speaker 1: very receptive to to calling. UM. In more or less,
- 15:02Speaker 1: they're to skilling those doos wherever they're going. You mentioned
- 15:06Speaker 1: before that you're doing some calling right now. Do you
- 15:08Speaker 1: do any decoying as well? We haven't tried decoying. UM.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Actually are the stands that have produced I guess the
- 15:17Speaker 1: most UM most activity recently have actually been more in
- 15:23Speaker 1: the timber. We haven't had as much activity on on
- 15:26Speaker 1: the edges, which is a little bit strange, a little
- 15:28Speaker 1: bit different for us be compared to last year's, but
- 15:32Speaker 1: I think crops and being an versus out vice versa
- 15:36Speaker 1: this year also the crop reclation has affected that a
- 15:39Speaker 1: little bit. Um. The majority of the deer movement we've
- 15:42Speaker 1: been seeing has been in the in the thicker betting
- 15:45Speaker 1: areas where bucks are cruising. You know, it's kind of
- 15:48Speaker 1: decent checking looking for those those What are the hottest
- 15:52Speaker 1: food sources right now in Illinois? Right now by us
- 15:56Speaker 1: it's it's definitely corn um. There are a couple of
- 15:58Speaker 1: fields actually NF friend that still have standard CORNU and
- 16:02Speaker 1: the deer numbers in those areas are very high. Uh,
- 16:07Speaker 1: you're not only using that for cover, but it's very
- 16:09Speaker 1: clear that they're using, um, the head rolls that have
- 16:12Speaker 1: been picked as their main food source at this point
- 16:16Speaker 1: in time. As we get into late November, what do
- 16:19Speaker 1: you expect to see for signmaking as we move on
- 16:23Speaker 1: in the in the month of November here, UM, I
- 16:25Speaker 1: anticipate that the scrape activity, um, the robs, those things
- 16:30Speaker 1: to kind of decrease. Again. We're going to see a
- 16:33Speaker 1: lot of the bucks checking out the major food sources,
- 16:37Speaker 1: whether that's you know, acorns in your area of beans, UM,
- 16:41Speaker 1: pet corn could be alfalfa depending on the specific location.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I just happens to be corn here. But really in
- 16:47Speaker 1: the next couple of weeks where it's going to be
- 16:49Speaker 1: really focused on those food sources. That's where the doors
- 16:52Speaker 1: are going to be in the box are sure to
- 16:54Speaker 1: follow during the week of Thanksgiving. Where do you want
- 16:57Speaker 1: to be running your trail cameras doing that? We could
- 17:00Speaker 1: Thanksgiving and still cameras that are going to be light
- 17:03Speaker 1: on those food source edges. UM, pretty close to our
- 17:08Speaker 1: our stands, because obviously we want to see the activity
- 17:11Speaker 1: directly in front of our stand Some of these food
- 17:13Speaker 1: sources are rather large at times, can be m a
- 17:17Speaker 1: struggle to chat at pinpoint where the deer coming out, UM,
- 17:21Speaker 1: where they're betting different things of that nature because as
- 17:24Speaker 1: the crops come off, those things transition throughout the year. UM.
- 17:28Speaker 1: But again, really trying to get holding on those food
- 17:31Speaker 1: sources on those edges where you can see a pretty
- 17:34Speaker 1: large view of what's in front of the camera going forward.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Then in the next week or so, what do you
- 17:40Speaker 1: think that book activity is going to be On the
- 17:42Speaker 1: scale of one to ten In Illinois, it's still like
- 17:46Speaker 1: one to ten for the next week here. I think
- 17:47Speaker 1: it's gonna be continue to be a seven. I think
- 17:49Speaker 1: it's gonna be really solid. Um, it's gonna you know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: the weather is looking good, shaping up to be um
- 17:56Speaker 1: nice and cool. I think it's going to continue to
- 17:59Speaker 1: be good in our areas and and throughout the Midwest
- 18:02Speaker 1: for that matter. Um, it's a it's a good time
- 18:05Speaker 1: to be in the woods and in Advantage. Wait until
- 18:07Speaker 1: as a group, the more time we spend in the woods,
- 18:11Speaker 1: we're really starting to lean towards this, you know, middle
- 18:14Speaker 1: tip to later and November being just as good or
- 18:18Speaker 1: even better than what the earlier part of November can be. Right, Josh,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I like your optimism. Good luck to you and the
- 18:24Speaker 1: team from Advantage Whitetail. Thanks for joining me, Thank you much, Spencer,
- 18:29Speaker 1: appreciate it alright and joining us on the line. Next
- 18:32Speaker 1: is Brett Joy in New Hampshire. Now Brett in New Hampshire.
- 18:35Speaker 1: What would you say the bucket t has been lately?
- 18:37Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten, I would say that, Um,
- 18:42Speaker 1: it's the best that's been all year. Um, the weather
- 18:46Speaker 1: has been excellent. It's been very cold, which is vastly
- 18:50Speaker 1: different from the week before last. Or last week, I
- 18:53Speaker 1: should say, um, which was very warm, So I'd say
- 18:56Speaker 1: it's pretty much in the tent. It doesn't get much
- 18:58Speaker 1: better than than it is right now. Um. The bucks
- 19:02Speaker 1: are moving, mature bucks are moving. Um, they're looking for
- 19:06Speaker 1: the next extra stow um, and they're covering a lot
- 19:10Speaker 1: of ground in daylight. So it's basically all you could
- 19:14Speaker 1: ask for. The only thing we don't have is tracking
- 19:15Speaker 1: snow yet. But if you're a stand hunter in the northeast,
- 19:20Speaker 1: this is what you look, what you wait for, these dates,
- 19:23Speaker 1: this weather. Yeah, it's it's going down. So are you
- 19:26Speaker 1: seeing some midday movement right now? Yet? We are, um,
- 19:30Speaker 1: not not a ton yet. I think that the next
- 19:33Speaker 1: historically um, today's um, you know eight two is when
- 19:40Speaker 1: we see the most midday activities. So I bet we're
- 19:43Speaker 1: gonna see a lot of noon walkers in the next
- 19:45Speaker 1: three or four days. Um. But I'm sure there's been
- 19:47Speaker 1: some too. Just because we haven't seen it in the
- 19:49Speaker 1: big Woods doesn't mean that's not happening. We're relying on
- 19:52Speaker 1: camera data and you know, observation, which usually we can't
- 19:55Speaker 1: see very far, and we're you know, dealing with tens
- 19:57Speaker 1: of thousands acres so obviously rational data is tough and
- 20:01Speaker 1: serial camera's gonna cover so much. So I'm sure it's happening.
- 20:04Speaker 1: It always does, But I'm sure we'll see some of
- 20:05Speaker 1: the cameras or you know, a person in the next
- 20:07Speaker 1: few days. You mentioned trail cameras as we hit peak
- 20:12Speaker 1: rut in the Northeast. Where do you want to be
- 20:14Speaker 1: running those? Um? The only differences I may put some
- 20:18Speaker 1: on major like trails, like travel areas, pinch points, funnels, uh,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know, just main travel corders. Where those deer are
- 20:26Speaker 1: you know, using to get from point A to point B.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I will say, though, I don't rely a ton of
- 20:30Speaker 1: trail camera data this time of year, just because you know,
- 20:33Speaker 1: when bucks are going from A to B, they're not
- 20:35Speaker 1: moving around, they're not taking their time, and there's this
- 20:38Speaker 1: less opportunity for them to walk in front of your camera. So, um,
- 20:41Speaker 1: just because you're not getting pictures of the bucks you
- 20:44Speaker 1: want to if you've had them in the last couple
- 20:46Speaker 1: of weeks to three weeks, you can expect that they're
- 20:48Speaker 1: going to be somewhere close and at any point they
- 20:50Speaker 1: could cruise by you. So I wouldn't get too down
- 20:52Speaker 1: if you know the picture or have a picture of
- 20:54Speaker 1: the buck y're after. You know, in the last few days, um,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you know, we we have been getting some good pictures.
- 21:00Speaker 1: It's definitely tailed off. Then they're tailed off since you know,
- 21:03Speaker 1: late October the first week in November. So they're still
- 21:05Speaker 1: on scrapes, a lot of them. And those bucks are
- 21:07Speaker 1: hitting scrapes kind of if they're in their way, I
- 21:10Speaker 1: would say, but it's not like they're going out of
- 21:12Speaker 1: their way working scrapes, making a bunch of new ones.
- 21:14Speaker 1: They are to an extent, but the scraping activity is
- 21:16Speaker 1: definitely declined, um And subsequently the trail camera activity is
- 21:21Speaker 1: declined as well. But that doesn't mean the deer or
- 21:23Speaker 1: the buck activities declined. It's actually increased. So that's just
- 21:27Speaker 1: an important takeaway that I've learned over the year, especially
- 21:29Speaker 1: in the Big Woods. When you're doing some in seasoned
- 21:32Speaker 1: scouting in the big Woods, what are you looking for
- 21:35Speaker 1: when you're trying to find buck betting and doe betting.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I'd be focused definitely on doe betting. I don't think
- 21:41Speaker 1: these bucks are betting much, and if they are, they're
- 21:43Speaker 1: kind of betting where they end up, you know, randomly,
- 21:46Speaker 1: because they're tired, you need to lay down for an
- 21:47Speaker 1: hour before they go look for the next dough. So
- 21:49Speaker 1: I'm focusing on doe betting. You know, that can be anything.
- 21:52Speaker 1: It can be you know, a thick you know, conifer stand,
- 21:56Speaker 1: It can be edges of a clear cut. It can
- 21:58Speaker 1: be topography based on the mount like points on ridges. Um,
- 22:02Speaker 1: that can be swamps. So looking for a concentration of
- 22:05Speaker 1: does is really important. And obviously buck sign is gonna
- 22:08Speaker 1: help as well. But um, if you can find rubs,
- 22:12Speaker 1: that's great, scrapes all that stuff, but um really does
- 22:15Speaker 1: that where it's at. And if you can find an
- 22:17Speaker 1: area that you know, there's a highway between two areas
- 22:21Speaker 1: that hold good you know, densities of dose, then you're
- 22:24Speaker 1: gonna be in a good area. Would I would assume
- 22:26Speaker 1: and have some action, But you know, staying mobiles, if
- 22:29Speaker 1: you stay mobile, if you haven't found that spot in
- 22:31Speaker 1: looking forward is good. Um. You know, if you bump
- 22:34Speaker 1: a bunch of dough, that's probably a good area. And
- 22:36Speaker 1: that one thing that I've um kind of come to realization,
- 22:40Speaker 1: comes to the realization over the past few years is
- 22:42Speaker 1: if you bump dose out of a you know, small
- 22:44Speaker 1: area where the does live, They're not gonna leave. And
- 22:47Speaker 1: just because you bump those does, that buck that may
- 22:49Speaker 1: or may not be in that area doesn't know those
- 22:51Speaker 1: does got bumped. He's still gonna come through and check
- 22:54Speaker 1: that area. So just because you bump the dose out
- 22:56Speaker 1: of there, that buck still knows those does live in
- 22:58Speaker 1: that area, and he's gonna keep heat continually circling through
- 23:01Speaker 1: those areas to check them. So I wouldn't be too
- 23:04Speaker 1: concerned with blowing does out to find the dose. Um,
- 23:07Speaker 1: and you know, the does aren't gonna really leave either.
- 23:09Speaker 1: They have relatively small core areas, so if you bump
- 23:12Speaker 1: them a couple of times, you're not going to just
- 23:13Speaker 1: completely leave the country. So I wouldn't be too concerned
- 23:16Speaker 1: about that right now. If we got a fresh blanket
- 23:19Speaker 1: of snow in the Northeast within this next week, how
- 23:22Speaker 1: would that change things for you on the tactical level, Yeah, Um,
- 23:27Speaker 1: it would actually change things a lot. Right now, we've
- 23:30Speaker 1: been sitting on you know, known areas or bucks cruise
- 23:33Speaker 1: from the past few years for targeting specific animals, but um,
- 23:38Speaker 1: really it's toughest targeting specific one right now. You're gonna
- 23:41Speaker 1: have to hope that the one you're looking for walks through,
- 23:44Speaker 1: but it could be any number of bucks. Um. But
- 23:47Speaker 1: I do have a couple of deer that I've got
- 23:49Speaker 1: pictures of recently, UM that I am not familiar with
- 23:52Speaker 1: the years past, early even earlier in the season. I
- 23:55Speaker 1: have no idea what they're doing. If they're random, I
- 23:57Speaker 1: know they're in the area we're hunting, or I'm hunting
- 23:59Speaker 1: them now, um where I think they may come through.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But if we get snow and I am able to
- 24:05Speaker 1: find a big track, that's a you know, a real
- 24:07Speaker 1: fast way to get on that deer and kill him
- 24:08Speaker 1: in a day rather than trying to hunt him for
- 24:11Speaker 1: the rest of the season and hope that he walks by.
- 24:13Speaker 1: UM with limited information on him going forward. Then, in
- 24:17Speaker 1: this next week or so, what do you think that
- 24:18Speaker 1: bucket TV is going to be on a scale of
- 24:21Speaker 1: one to ten in New Hampshire. I think it's gonna
- 24:24Speaker 1: remain in a ten for the next three or four
- 24:26Speaker 1: days and may taper a bit towards the end of
- 24:28Speaker 1: the week. Um, you know, maybe till an eight or nine.
- 24:32Speaker 1: But I still think it's gonna be really high. Um.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Peak breeding is tomorrow essentially in New Hampshire. Um, so
- 24:39Speaker 1: that's great and just on the other side of peak breeding.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Maybe the twenty second seven is really good, um really
- 24:47Speaker 1: good action, a lot of older deer up cruising looking
- 24:49Speaker 1: for does it's gonna start to taper off, you know
- 24:52Speaker 1: towards the thirty a little bit. You still gonna have
- 24:54Speaker 1: good activity, but just maybe not the midday all zombie
- 24:57Speaker 1: mode cruising as I call it, where those deer just
- 25:00Speaker 1: us searching and searching. Alright, Brett, I know you guys
- 25:04Speaker 1: just killed the buck there, so I'm gonna go check
- 25:06Speaker 1: out that video on the Just Hunt Club on YouTube.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Good luck with the rest of your season and thanks
- 25:11Speaker 1: for joining me. And that concludes this week's episode of
