Transcript
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Three Yards Perkati, a podcast covering the Miami Dolphins and the NFL.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now, here's your host, Chris, Alf, and Simon.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_03]: Hi we're on this is three years precarious I'm Alfredo Antiaga Simon Clancy is here Chris Kaufman is here and we're fresh off of that game Yesterday at one PM which there was a lot to watch a lot to talk about and we'll get to it right now right away Simon first impressions we're gonna talk about all the bad and all the good
- 0:39[SPEAKER_03]: And a little bit more bad than good, I think, on a few spots of concern on this team.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_03]: But what were your first impressions of this game?
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: Um, all the things I thought would be okay.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: We're pretty much okay.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: All the things I thought would be pad.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: We're pretty bad.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: And some of the things I thought would be really bad actually exceeded my expectations of bad.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_01]: But overall, it was, it's preseason, but it was a decent workout.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: We've got to see some players that we've heard some things about.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: Patrick Paul, for example, I thought play pretty well and certainly played well on.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: Take review.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: Chris is probably going to big up.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: You're it's probably going to make you so happy out because I think Tana Connor did all right as well because Chris had a good solid second look and you might be kind of cumous and at some point when he's done a kind of has that that tallest midget thing going right now.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the Washington Times out of the press with, you know, and we remain to see interesting to see Jeremy Fowler report about potentially moving Tariq Hill and, you know, the Washington certainly give you a cause for joy, because they're good players, they're with good place in quality, you know, Malik Pegua last year after Charles was excellent.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and some of the, you know, some of the younger players, McClendon, I thought I had a really good game, I thought he, you know, especially as a, as a past Russia, I thought he played well, there was some, some flat, there's a couple of plays from the rookie defensive tackles, you know, Grant was kind of quiet, but
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he showed the effort and the hustle to get outside the tackle box and I thought Jordan Phillips had two or three really, really good reps inside of the defensive line, including one at the goal line where he literally fought for double team and then stacked out the running back at the point to stop a touchdown, which was probably the most impressive player the game for me.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, some places and then, you know, won't get to some of the minuses as well, but, you know, overall we didn't lose, so it doesn't get decent start.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a good old tie.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_03]: I'm glad that I did that.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_03]: I'm glad that they did that because I remember a few years ago there was an overtime game.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_03]: I believe the dolphins were in it.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_03]: Was it against the Jaguars where that thing went for forever and overtime?
- 2:47[SPEAKER_03]: Because both guys missed field goals.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, you know, at nice little tie, they should have a field goal kicking competition or something like that.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: Not overtime.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, these long field goals in the preseason.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: But generally, it's been trending this way for a few years, isn't it?
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, time is coming down.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_02]: I had a seventy yarder.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_02]: I know.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_03]: I had mixed feelings because they had a shot to try out Jason Sanders for a sixty seven yarder.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_03]: Do you want him to miss his career high or would you want him to go for it?
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he's got a sixty seven yard leg.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's probably a sixty sixty yard guy maybe.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's that's that's ridiculous.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to go for it on fourth and fifteen.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_03]: And hand the thing and your opponent the ball at the forty eight yard line.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_03]: We're like fifteen seconds left.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_03]: Then why not, you know?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a good yesterday as well.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: To be fair.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: Kudos to the new special teams coach.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: I thought we were good coverage at decent.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: Sal is now the long field goal.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: What's not to love?
- 3:58[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, by the way, before I get Chris in here, I think they've made a mistake with these new kickoff rules for this season, because we've had a kickoff return for a touchdown.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_03]: It's the only week one, by the way, a kickoff return for a touchdown, a punt return for a touchdown, and a lot of teams had a lot of success, including the Dolphins returning points and kickoff.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: They want more explosive plays and less concussions.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: And they're getting it.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: That's great.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's brilliant.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's exactly as as intended.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_03]: By the way, I had no idea that that was a rule that that was a thing.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_03]: You hit the pile on and it goes to the twenty.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_03]: How awesome is that?
- 4:37[SPEAKER_03]: So that's like a trick kick that Jason Sandish will work on.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_03]: Like if you could just kick it and hit the pile on every time.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_03]: That man got lucky.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the other one is when you feel the ball as a pump returner with one foot out of bounds and one foot in bounds and you catch it the ball goes out of bounds at that point.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: That's a really smart play for a for a return guide to to try and do is try and pin a team deep is to know what my say is to that ball goes out to the thirty five is that right?
- 5:13[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe the chance to look because he had to hit the zone and we also got hit with that one yesterday.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it used to be like that was the old West Walker play when he was playing for the Patriots.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_02]: So when he when he catch a catch a kick off.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_02]: with one foot out of bounds, then it's considered a kick out of bounds.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what I'm talking about.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: Pitting him deep.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's the guy that's being pinned deep.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_03]: And I never get over the official coming out and saying he missed the drop zone.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, what?
- 5:46[SPEAKER_03]: He did what?
- 5:48[SPEAKER_03]: Why are they marching out to the Forty yard line?
- 5:51[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_03]: Chris, your thirty thousand foot view before we get into the bed here on the first part of the show.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_02]: To our thirty thousand foot view, you know, some individual performers and that's what preseason I think tends to be about.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_02]: And that's Derek McClendon on the edge.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_02]: Ethan Bonner in the second area amongst the corners, Matt Dickerson, Oli Gordon, Taj Washington.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_02]: These guys really moved the needle for themselves in ways that like, you know, kind of planting their flag and saying, hey, look at me, you know, you got to pay attention to me.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: Whereas we might not have already been paying attention to them.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: And Ollie Gordon, that's already showing up.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_02]: We'll get into the, I think we'll get into the, what happened with Alex Madison and the season ending injury and the fact that they've signed two guys to replace in Shampkin and Mike Boone, a guy that I talked about a couple of years ago for free agency and Mike Boone.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_02]: I think Ollie Gordon, you can tell
- 6:57[SPEAKER_02]: that he made an impression on them because Simon, I think you pointed it out on only Finn's discord.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_02]: Shampkin is nothing like Alex Madison, right?
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, like Jamal Williams for they brought in.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_02]: And so, and shamp, and neither is Mike Boomerally.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_02]: You know, these are smaller, these are smaller, kind of fast guys, I think.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_02]: And so what it means to me is that Ollie Gordon made an impression.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_02]: because they didn't go out and go ahead and get a bigger guy to go compete with Ollie Gordon.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: They're like, no, we're all about Ollie Gordon.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_02]: So those guys moved the needle for themselves, I think, in good ways.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: You know, guys that moved the needle for themselves in bad ways, I thought that, you know, we made disagree with chatting, Tindall didn't, you know, he still
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: Still struggling to me, Julian Hill was struggling Zach Wilson, you know, we'll get into that later.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure, but like that was I didn't like that performance for him.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_02]: You know, Grayson Murphy's very controversial here.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_02]: They some people really liked what he put out, but
- 8:08[SPEAKER_02]: I just thought that he looked like he was wearing some at shoes from an athleticism standpoint.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_02]: He couldn't change direction and also his motor runs really cold.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_02]: Surprisingly so and and so I think that I think that he he had a he struggled he had a tough outing.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: He played like over fifty snaps, like fifty four snaps or something like that.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_03]: Plans are in the sixties.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_03]: I think he reached sixties when he played.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: He played like the full game.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_02]: So this was a chance for him to really, you know, plant that flag and you know, he got a couple of pressures.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_02]: He did give a sack.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_02]: He was unblocked on it.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_02]: But like, you know, I think that, I think that in general, you look at the totality of his game and it was really rough.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_02]: And Keyon Smith, look, the worst I've seen since, in the year.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_03]: And we're going to get into that.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: He was, he was awful in twenty two and then he was completely different player in twenty three and then in twenty four, he got hurt before he could really, you know, establish anything in preseason.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_02]: Um, but he, he regressed badly and we'll probably talk about why, you know, German Affetti was just up to his mold.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think, I think French Affetti would have offered more resistance.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_03]: Austrian Affetti.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_02]: He was, he was just so, so very bad.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I've just got that.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: Right here Feddy, very well.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I think you'll hear the fuck that.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: Is that some basketball player?
- 9:42[SPEAKER_02]: It was pretty, it was pretty bad watching those guys.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_02]: Some other guys, Patrick and Morse did not survive the all-twenty to review very well.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_02]: In my opinion.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: you know, when I was looking at it earlier today, you know, John Saunders was kind of up and down, but there were some times that he just looked like he had no idea what he was doing out there on the alt-one-two, which was unfortunate, but, you know, first preseason game, whatever.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, that's kind of the standout performers and other guys.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_02]: There's some themes though, the major thing that I would say is that it concerns me that the secondary just doesn't look very physical.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: In addition to not very talented, they just don't look at all very physical or disruptive, and that is such a recipe for disaster.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: When you can have potentially guys just running free access all over into the soft zones and, you know, dicing up a secondary during the regular season, that is something that they are going to have to need to fix quickly.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just want to mention a couple of guys actually do it.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot to... I thought I know they were planning against Bums, but the right side of the offensive line laid on Braiden Daniels, the Utah kid, and Jalen McKinsey, who was a right guard.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: I thought they both played pretty well, and actually I've just realized who Jalen McKinsey is.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: I was just going to have a look at the backstory about him.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know who he is?
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: No, but he was he was a right tack or was it?
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: I was he a right tackman down to the top.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_01]: He's judging McKenzie's kid.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he's judging McKenzie's kid.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: You see for five years.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he he played in twenty seventeen at USC.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was his first.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: That was his freshman year.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_03]: So he went around Jesus.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but we signed him a little while ago and yeah, he's really McKinsey's kids.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't realize that's where he was, but yeah.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they're going to have to rework everything that they're thinking about as far as their backup tackles because I think let's start there.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_03]: Let's start with the with the bad here on the the first half of the show.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_03]: They don't have a backup tackle.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_03]: I thought that may be because I sought for a couple of practices and because he's done some work on his body.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_03]: Ken Smith could be an answer there.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think he's strong enough like Jesus Christ Yeah, it's it was evident in this game like so okay, so so maybe they know what they're doing my playing in my garden because he sure sells not a left tackle at least not on this league.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they're not strong enough to be a tackle then how can be strong enough to be a guard?
- 12:17[SPEAKER_03]: Well, because maybe he could be a move guy.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you know, they could rely on his movement and positioning or whatever.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, go back to old on that strip sack though that.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that is.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_02]: And he was just truly awful.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: He hadn't paid very well to that point, but he got absolutely like just rolled over by, you know, and a book is a good player, but my god, like, that was crazy.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, like you take a Reggie white club, and it's not from Reggie white, then that's a bad thing.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_03]: That's not a good thing.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_02]: To be fair, those past wrestlers, I was kind of impressed by two Chicago's past wrestlers there.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, Booker, as you mentioned Simon, is I think a really good player, but also the, what was his name is Dominique.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he looked pretty good.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_02]: I thought so they had that some talent, but that's no excuse.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's you can't but I think the better excuse is clearly they've done him a little bit of a disservice by him.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_02]: He played four positions during the game.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and it's one thing to play four positions throughout training camp on different days and what she's done.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I've done that.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_02]: But during the game itself, he started off a right guard, moved over to right to a right tackle, then moved over to left guard, and then moved over to left tackle during the game.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's during one preseason game, during the game itself.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_02]: And I just think that this guy is coming off a major injury and you're doing, I'm probably a major disservice by not allowing him to focus on a position.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_02]: focus certainly not a side certainly not a side if you're not even letting them focus out of position.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's just it's unfortunate because it means that it's probably too late for him because even if you do turn around and like okay well let's have you focus on life tackle right now how do you trust him you don't trust him you can't trust him you can't afford to so they really just as you said at the beginning of they have no backup tackles no they don't
- 14:31[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe you could get by and not even a left tackle because at the moon, it's the moon to him, Larry Borham, left tackle.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_03]: He just can't play.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_03]: It's just an outed position.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_01]: They've got to look at, you know, I mean, you look at some of that Philadelphia, for example.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: You've got Miles Hinton, he's the rookie, but Lane Johnson.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: Daring Canard, my Lata, obviously, Colin Pierce, Matt Prior, camera Williams.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: You kind of look and candle lamp there as well and you kind of think, you know, if Lam just leagues out there and that, you know, bringing him back when making awful lot of sense, because I just can't see a situation that if God forbid Patrick Paul goes down.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a single player on the roster that you could, you know, with the most kind of injury prone quarterback in the NFL, that, I mean, there's some of those if Eddie snaps, yesterday would, like, for an eight year veteran, they were absolutely begging belief, you know, and the fact that, and a Borom started on the right side, and people were saying, messaging me on Twitter going, Borom's going to be the Borom's, the backup, what you talking about, Larry Borom isn't the backup.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Borham is not the backup left tackle.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he is not had a good camp and he cannot handle being a left tackle.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely unacquivoc thing or he couldn't mention cargo as a Chicago bear and he certainly can't in Miami.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: That is not a thing.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: That will not be a thing.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_03]: And he's and he's probably a backup right tackle just in a pinch if you like like yesterday, you know, and Toronto arm set is not walking through that door.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_02]: He's lost like eighty pounds.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_03]: And well, he is walking through that door, but then he's going to look like that afterwards.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I thought it was intriguing that the artist said that he thought Boron played really well in the one V ones against the, against the bears on Friday's practice.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: But said that in the actual eleven V eleven, he wasn't nearly as good.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's indicative of where we are.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that, you know, I mean, somebody was mentioning, I don't worry, Liam, I can build the backup left tackle exactly.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: We're doing that now.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: But then you think.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like maybe?
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: Is I can be going to be any worse than what we saw?
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't believe.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I hate the same, but yeah, like look, they've really had an issue because Andrew Meyer went down and it jumbled up their entire backup offensive line.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_03]: So some help is on the way on the interior, but my God, they got nothing at tackle.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, like that's, I'm actually looking at Lee and Mike and Bergen like maybe, like, did Ryan Hayes do anything?
- 17:13[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they played him out of position one more time.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, the problem with the icon book or indeed any of the tackles that are on the roster is that there's not a trustworthy tight end who can just sit next to them and help like I don't think any of the tight ends particularly, you know, covered themselves in huge amount.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, some of those Julian Hill first teams.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: attempted blocks where, you know, I mean, there was a thing that Brian building a put up on Twitter of Patrick Paul's SNAT.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's the very first one.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: Paul plays it really nicely, but he'll get absolutely ragdolled at the point and you like, oh, Jesus, is this half-first team?
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like, he's, he's the way he has sort of drops off a cliff over the last couple years as a blocker is, is really interesting.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_02]: For the record, I don't know, just the channel counter, make the roster.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: because everybody's so bad anyway, that I figured, all right, might as well keep the guy that can run fast.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's it.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and the problem is that the, well, Mike McDaniel has, I guess he's, I guess this is a threat or more than a promise, but Darren Waller is going to practice this week, but he doesn't block.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, they're going to have to figure some things out there.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_02]: I do agree with you.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't want to block.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_03]: I do agree with you there.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, he takes issue with that.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_03]: At least he does on podcasts.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_02]: But it's his own words.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_03]: Well, everybody can always say that they're taking out of context.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about this offensive line.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: How long have we talked about it?
- 18:50[SPEAKER_03]: Right now six minutes.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost a dereliction of duty though at this point.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like it is.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the same people and this is what I'm gonna get the same people that can identify James Daniels and he was really good yesterday and Aaron Brewer, a guy who I think is right there borderline pro-bolar.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_03]: He needs to be the biggest big man.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_03]: That's the one thing I'd say about Brewer.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, he can't handle power at two hundred and eighty five pounds.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_03]: Like best just.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: I saw the giant's getting the other day and I look at Marcus Embo and I was like, he was actually outstanding and he think, you know, what the Willy Lampkin, we talked about Willy Lampkin when he looked like him fucking all pro for the Rams in three seconds, taking first and second team snaps.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know, yeah, Brandon Thorn doing Willy Lampkin carp's today.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, whoa, this kid is, you know, it's just, why do we keep me, why are we missing so badly on offensive linemen?
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I feel like I could have this in draft for the last ten years, but it's just, you know, just doesn't seem to get fixed.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I mean, the positive and people don't want us to sometimes focus on the positive is that it bears that Patrick Paul is kind of as advertised from what, you know, what he had looked like in training.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_02]: And that's a big deal because, you know, that's a major puzzle piece for the dolphin.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, we're still lamenting the offensive line as we always do, but at least in this case, we appear to be talking about
- 20:30[SPEAKER_02]: the backups and not the starters.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_03]: And we know, and we know these guys never get hurt.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's the power.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: There's enough good players on this team for the Dolphins to be in and around the wild card mix.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: If every single player of any note stays healthy and that means the quarterback
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: the running back, the first two receivers, Paul, well, every offensive lineman, frankly, every offensive lineman, Jordan Brooks, mean Kiffitt's patch.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: Every single one of those has got to play Seventeen games, that the dolphins have even a chance of the wildcard.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: And this is...
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, they're on all the edges.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: This is a sport where three hundred pound men run into, you know, multi, multi impact, you know, hits with guys who could be in the Olympic Games running into you at insane speed.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's just not
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: fundamentally feasible and the problem with that is, because everything gets injuries, right?
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: Everything, guys, we know this.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_01]: We just have such a lack of depth and it comes from those bad drafts.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we go back and look at as a camera, we go back and look at the chatting tinders, we go back and look at the cameras, we're all these players that should be coming through and should be
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: filling out at worst, filling out those depth positions where you know, okay, Tyre's going down, but as a camera's going to come in, or, you know, Ramsey's going down, he comes out, or whatever it is.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just not happening, and those are the things that are killing this team, because there's no depth whatsoever.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: And offensive line, corner back, tight end is as bad as I've seen in a long time on any team.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you know, it's also starting to come in a focus a little bit Simon is, uh, think about Kean Smith.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_02]: He's been here four years, right?
- 22:23[SPEAKER_02]: This is his fourth year.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_02]: And he goes out there and just lays an absolute, you know, turd on the feet.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, the bank.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_02]: And, and, and, and I wonder if some of these guys think of the guys you just named Eric as a comma and Channing Tindle, they're still here.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_02]: We keep giving them chance.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_02]: So when you, when you miss on the guys, it's compounded by the fact that
- 22:50[SPEAKER_02]: You're giving them four years of your time and your opportunity costs to a place on the roster to be very, very patient, very, very patient.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_02]: Let's get it going.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_02]: Let's get it going.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I understand the temptation because it took that long with Austin Jackson, didn't it?
- 23:11[SPEAKER_02]: And so, and then Noah Ignogany, you know, when he goes off and he's actually a starter in the slot,
- 23:18[SPEAKER_02]: for the commanders all year.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I understand the temptation to keep waiting like this, but it's at the cost of, you know, you're giving these guys who are really just bad football players, chance after chance after chance.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes they do pan out after all that time.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes, and most of the time they don't.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_02]: And the net effect is, you just end up with really poor depth.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: We just got a break.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just watching the play here from watching Ruben hit the light.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: Make a tackle down at the goal line and these still start us in.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: Paul plays it.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: Seven iron plays it.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Myers playing center at the time.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: Meyer and Daniel's trying to go elbow to elbow on a combo block and both of them just get ragged old.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_01]: But Boram.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: My god, Borom just gets destroyed at the point.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: To be fair to Tana Connor, he does a really good job of standing his guy out.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: But the back, I think it must be right, has absolutely no way that he polite makes the tackle.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: And he kind of comes through a gap.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: But my and Daniels and Borom, my god, that is not a good look.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_03]: All right, we're going to go to break.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_03]: And when we come back, we're going to talk about the good.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_03]: But first, these words.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_03]: I'm Jalen Phillips, and you're listening to three yards per carry.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_03]: And we're back.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_03]: I think that was Brunskill, wasn't it?
- 24:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I was at Brunskill.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, Myers up for two more weeks.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's Brunskill, sixty-four.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, okay.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, they're my bad.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Myers, sixty-seven.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_03]: He's had a good camp and he's kind of like entrenched as far as the backup center.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not sure if Daniel's is coming off.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_01]: and it's hard to tell unless you're in the room.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure if Daniel's just peed enough to take off a second-level defender or they just realise his bronze skills just fucked the pony, but anyway.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I know they're one of those.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_03]: Patrick Paul is running duo and Pharaoh Brown just looks at a guy just shoot the be-get.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: I know you just said about James Daniels, but I'm watching the next play, right at the goal line.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: Daniels just gets abused inside by whoever the defensive tackle is here.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_02]: I thought he had, you know, some really good moments, and then, you know, it was just, you know, some moments.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: This is just three plays.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: This is two plays, but my goodness.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: That is, I mean, he is responsible for the stuff.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of calling her again, absolutely, matching someone.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he makes the team is just a he's fast, which can do some things with just because of all the choreography that they work in their blocking and the run game.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_02]: Just the speed itself and the ability to get to certain places, you know, so fast, could make a difference.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_02]: But also his versatility, I mean, he plays up back.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_02]: He plays tight end.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_02]: He plays white.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_02]: He's a former wide receiver, you know, he's and so
- 26:26[SPEAKER_02]: and he's not good, but they're all shit.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_02]: So, so what's the point?
- 26:32[SPEAKER_02]: At least get the guy that was keep the guy that runs fast and can play every position.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, one thing I will say is that I thought and nobody ever says that people are missing a full back unless it was Tom Rathman, but man, they've missed Alec Engeld yesterday.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they have that.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they run game.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_03]: That was obvious.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_03]: All right, I want to talk about these rookie defensive tackles, a one second viewing
- 26:57[SPEAKER_03]: Pretty impressive, especially somebody who is twenty years old, that is that strong in Jordan Phillips.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_03]: You talked about it earlier.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_03]: You said there were three plays.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I identified the same three plays.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_03]: That one on the goal line is ridiculous.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_03]: They run duo on him.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_03]: He tosses one guy around and then swims past the guy and then makes the tackle at the goal line on a running back that's coming downhill, right at him.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_03]: like that's real strength.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, Kevin's grind had a pressure, a near sack, and kind of showed, you know, a three hundred and thirty-pound man moving that way to get out and make a tackle on a, on a wide receiver that catches a screen is impressive in and of itself.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_03]: And Zika Bakers finished up pretty strong in that game as well.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_03]: I like those rookie defensive tackles, and I've like them all camp, I thought that they played well in that game, your thoughts Simon.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, look, I thought Phillips's power was the best pick that we made in the draft, and I just, I loved his tape.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: Twenty years old, as you said, Redshirt sophomore, like obviously there was some raw stuff around the edges, but just some of his film was outstanding, and yeah, I mean,
- 28:05[SPEAKER_01]: to be able to split double teams at the goal line against, you know, first and second team players of an NFL team is pretty decent as a, you know, you're very first game.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: His upside is wild to me.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think he could be the best of the bunch.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think Graham was fine.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't, you know, he didn't stand now and to a great or a lesser degree.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of the job, right?
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's to soak up inside and, you know,
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to see the best of Kenneth Grant when he's working every down with, with, um, with saxyla and I think the biggest mark of how good Kenneth Grant will be will actually be how good Jordan Brooks is, uh, because his job Kenneth Grant has to keep Jordan Brooks clean and we all love Brooks, you know, he had a good year last year and he's the young, you know,
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: He's the leader of that team, I think, certainly the leader of the defense, but he's the kind of the, he's the alpha, and I think you'll see the success of Kenneth Grant by the success of Jordan Brooks.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't see enough of Bigger's really to, I wasn't really focused enough on Bigger's and I haven't seen a lot of the, the all, the all-twenty-two, but I certainly, what I saw in Jordan Phillips, I was like, yeah, this kid can definitely play for me.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: Chris?
- 29:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think Phillips had those brilliant moments and then like, you know, some other moments that that just remind you that he's that he's twenty and he's, you know, he's very young and and it might take some time, but, you know, the potential.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_02]: is high, the ceiling is quite high, so I'm glad to just watch that go.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_02]: He made it interesting, but also the guy he's competing with for probably in that four-man rotation made it interesting too, and that's Matt Dickerson, and that's not a rookie, but he was very good as well.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: He made some pretty ridiculous plays, and you got to remember that there's gonna be a four-man rotation, and we know that three of them are going to be
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: uh... you know zaxi or can't have grant and beneath a jones so there's a fourth guy and is a jordan village is a map fiction that that to me is is the question uh... so that's that's that's that's going to that's a really that's shaping up to be such a good problem it's a cliche but it's it really is uh... i don't have feelings on the team because he just strikes me is that the ultimate second contract player you know i mean yeah yeah that's exactly right uh...
- 30:34[SPEAKER_02]: And now as we're kind of grand, I thought that the all-twenty-two was better for him than the initial view.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_02]: And the reason I say that is because his mobility, like, really did actually make an impact on some plays.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: You know, as the ball kind of escapes to the perimeter a little bit and things like that.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_02]: He did he did have some some impressive plays that way, but also I think especially when you have a guy with his size and his mobility The thing it puts it does is it puts the quarterback on a little bit of an egg timer because the bottom line is this guy comes looping around You know a little bit late a little bit into the play He's comes looping around and because he has that sort of that athleticism and mobility
- 31:27[SPEAKER_02]: he's making a run at the quarterback so the quarterback can't just hold on to it forever.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_02]: And that I think you you pretty much hit the nail in the head when you said that you're going to see it more when he's working with somebody like Zach Sealer.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to see it more when he's working with those starters because those guys are
- 31:50[SPEAKER_02]: very good at doing, at executing those stunts and twists and games with each other and having chemistry with one another to where they're getting after the quarterback and the quarterback just doesn't have all day to throw it because they're going straight forward and that's sticking.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: That's not this defensive style.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that he fits the defensive style really well.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to make an impact.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: He showed kind of a whoy is thing.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: during the game.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, now I promised that I wasn't going to hit on any of the bad, but as being at the resident, you know, Grayson Murphy fan around here, I almost, I did guarantee that he would get a second of the game.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_03]: I thought he was absolutely awful.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he got a second.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_03]: You're right.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I predict that I guarantee he will have a sack on Sunday, but I think the second part was and he will play hard, but he's just not in an NFL player.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, here's the problem.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_03]: He didn't play hard.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, but McClendon, he's longer, leaner, actually impacted the game more, played hard throughout.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_03]: If I'm more Camara, I'm in trouble, aren't I?
- 33:07[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm a coach, yeah, and I'm going back and looking at that film, what I'm looking for, as a guy who's going to be a bottom of the roster, or even a practice score player, is somebody that's just going to every single down, who's just chasing their ass off, who is working, it's hot, this is the NFL, this is hard, who is working every single down,
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: not kind of lolly gagging their way, jogging, kind of peeling back on plays, but not really making any effort, just letting others around get to the ball first.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_01]: And that was really McClendon versus Murphy yesterday.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: McClendon was the first guy, and he was the absolutely unstoppable, you know, hundred and ten miles an hour, drew a cell bunny the entire time.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: No matter whether he made a play or not,
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: He was around the ball, he was running his ass off, he was working hard.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: Murphy was just jogging and just like, I mean, there's a play that Chris highlighted on any things, which was astonishing really.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: He had about three attempts to, I mean, he didn't make any attempts.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: He had three opportunities to make plays and just kind of didn't, because he was sort of, you know,
- 34:11[SPEAKER_01]: He's a little like he was out on a kind of eight-year-old Sunday jog on the way to the retirement home.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_01]: He was like, what are you doing?
- 34:18[SPEAKER_01]: And then somebody ran past him and made a tackle.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, mate, you could have made that tackle like five yards previously.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's a play where Tyson Beijing rolls out early on.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_01]: And he's kind of stuck or stick or twist.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_01]: He's no what to do.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: And then he finally decided to run towards Beijing.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_01]: And it is honestly, it's like somebody in a mobility scooter with reverse on.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: and one tire missing trying to cover ten yards is it's painful.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen sloth move quicker.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was frightening.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I mean, if I'm at defensive line, staff, I am just thinking, who's going to give me a hundred and ten percent when it's late in the fourth quarter or it's hot and it's tiring and I just need somebody to make a play.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we're going to come from behind and make a tackle on someone and not the ball out.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_01]: And that ain't going to be great some Murphy, it just isn't.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it makes me realize that when Jalen Phillips suggested that grace and Murphy might be the best pure past Russia on the team, that actually kind of in hindsight comes off like a backhanded insult because it almost highlights that he does absolutely nothing other than that.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it would have made more of an impact.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_03]: On the way out here, we'd be remiss if we weren't going to talk about this.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_03]: Alexander Madison goes on the IR emergency next surgery is pretty scary when you play in a football game at one p.m.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_03]: you get injured at three thirty and you're having surgery
- 35:54[SPEAKER_03]: a couple hours later that's a bit scary and i guess we'll learn more about that as time moves on but i guess it's the oligordan show from now on right so i'm
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's serious.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel bad for Madison, because he's clearly had a really good camp.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I didn't, I don't particularly write him anything.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: He was great at Minnesota.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: Certainly towards the back end of the time there.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: But he's clearly worked hard.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: He's clearly had a really good camp.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_01]: And you got to feel for the guy and didn't look good on it.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's walking off.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: But I've got to say, I liked Ali Gordon.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_01]: You don't in the don't walk up for being a bum Chris.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought he just looks like an NFL back.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: And as long as he worked to do, but I like him.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's a good player.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he could definitely be something there.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited for Ali Gordon because it's like it's like it's like Chris Brooks all over again except clearly things are lining up that Ali Gordon is actually going to be counted on and going to you know get an opportunity here and and so I'm really excited about it the thing about Alex Madison that's
- 36:52[SPEAKER_02]: I hate to raise alarms about this, but he ends up with emergency next surgery.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's very scary.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_02]: They never stabilized his neck on the field.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: They never, you know, he walked off.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_02]: like what do you do if you if you suspect in a serious neck injury like that like there's there's there's procedure that you normally see that that was definitely not there and and so it's just really confusing and so it must have been quite mysterious might have been like maybe he's like oh no I'm fine or but he was on the field for a while so it's really weird
- 37:33[SPEAKER_03]: but i do feel for him he was having a great camp and even in the preseason game he's supposed to be good at short yardage and you know what he was all right and we will leave it there by the way if you want to be with us you want to interact with us even more than just listen to our show every single week
