- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. As it came to pass, as they
- 0:04Speaker 1: still went on and talked, that behold, there appeared a
- 0:08Speaker 1: chariot of fire and horses of fire, and parted them
- 0:13Speaker 1: both asunder, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
- 0:18Speaker 1: 2 Kings 2.11 Lord, as you place powerful men and
- 0:24Speaker 1: women in my life as mentors, I have made the
- 0:28Speaker 1: decision that I will not stop pursuing them even when
- 0:31Speaker 1: it's convenient to leave and be on my own. I
- 0:35Speaker 1: declare that I will not leave or part ways until
- 0:40Speaker 1: you tell me to do so, God. When other people
- 0:43Speaker 1: in my field try to discourage me and dissuade me
- 0:47Speaker 1: from holding fast to the process, I will ignore them
- 0:52Speaker 1: because I am not moved by external voices but by
- 0:56Speaker 1: internal convictions. Because proximity determines my ability, I will stay
- 1:02Speaker 1: close until I receive a double portion of the wisdom
- 1:06Speaker 1: and knowledge they possess. I praise you, Lord, because in
- 1:11Speaker 1: your goodness, you also give me the opportunity to go
- 1:15Speaker 1: above and beyond those who guide me, that I can
- 1:18Speaker 1: be blessed to be a blessing to those coming after me.
- 1:24Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for praying with me today.

- 1:35Speaker 1: by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:53Speaker 2: He fell from the top of his upper room and
- 1:55Speaker 2: injured himself beyond repair. He sought the healing and guidance
- 2:00Speaker 2: of the Philistine gods, but was instead met with Elijah's
- 2:04Speaker 2: rebuke and God's justice. In this story, we witness Elijah's
- 2:09Speaker 2: departure from this earth through the eyes of his student, Elisha.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Elisha witnesses the glory and profound power of God as
- 2:18Speaker 2: he takes his master up in a chariot of fire.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Inspired by the book of 2 Kings.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:29Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our last time together,
- 2:32Speaker 3: we learned about Ahaziah, who, like his father Ahab, looked
- 2:36Speaker 3: to help and hope in foreign gods and false deities.
- 2:41Speaker 3: His reign and his life was cut short because he
- 2:44Speaker 3: did not seek the one true God. Elijah had delivered
- 2:48Speaker 3: God's message of judgment to Ahaziah as the king lay
- 2:51Speaker 3: helplessly in bed after a great fall. Today we'll hear
- 2:55Speaker 3: how Elijah's time on earth comes to an end. This
- 2:59Speaker 3: great man of God, the one who served God so
- 3:02Speaker 3: faithfully and forcefully, would be taken up before the eyes
- 3:05Speaker 3: of his successor, Elisha. It is an incredible display of
- 3:10Speaker 3: God's supernatural power that will profoundly impact Elisha as he
- 3:15Speaker 3: takes on the mantle of the prophet of God to
- 3:18Speaker 3: be the man of God to God's people. So, let's
- 3:22Speaker 3: listen to today's reading.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The sun was high in the sky. A few clouds
- 3:29Speaker 2: danced around it to the late summer breeze, creating brief
- 3:32Speaker 2: moments of shade for the two travelers below. The earth
- 3:36Speaker 2: and sky seemed to be in perfect harmony, both dancing
- 3:39Speaker 2: and swaying to the wind. On the trail surrounded by
- 3:43Speaker 2: lilies coming from Gilgal walked Elijah and Elisha. The old
- 3:48Speaker 2: and grizzled prophet had traveled everywhere with his young apprentice.
- 3:52Speaker 2: The two of them had experienced many miracles together. Elijah
- 3:56Speaker 2: had taught Elisha the ways of God. He spoke of
- 3:59Speaker 2: the Lord's truth, justice, goodness, and mercy. Elisha was able
- 4:04Speaker 2: to observe the way Elijah cared for the people of Israel.
- 4:07Speaker 2: He gave his entire life to them, ministering and healing
- 4:11Speaker 2: when necessary. He had also watched Elijah speak truth to power.
- 4:16Speaker 2: He confronted kings and queens despite his fears. Elisha admired
- 4:21Speaker 2: his old teacher. He prayed to God he would become
- 4:25Speaker 2: just as good a man as he. No, he prayed
- 4:28Speaker 2: he would be better. He prayed for faithfulness like his,
- 4:32Speaker 2: and a strong sense of justice and truth. The two
- 4:36Speaker 2: of them strolled along in silence. The grass next to
- 4:39Speaker 2: the trail swayed gracefully all throughout the valley. Elijah turned
- 4:44Speaker 2: his face towards the sun and breathed in the sweet
- 4:47Speaker 2: summer air. He turned to his young student and said,
- 4:51Speaker 2: The Lord has told me to go to Bethel. You
- 4:54Speaker 2: should remain here. Elisha smiled and shook his head. He
- 4:58Speaker 2: had a feeling as to what the Lord was about
- 5:01Speaker 2: to do. No, he responded plainly. As the Lord lives,
- 5:05Speaker 2: I will not leave your side. So the two of
- 5:08Speaker 2: them changed course to the holy ground of Bethel, where
- 5:11Speaker 2: Jacob once prayed many years ago. On their way to Bethel,
- 5:15Speaker 2: a group of prophets passed them on the road. They
- 5:17Speaker 2: had anticipated Elisha's arrival, for the Lord had spoken to
- 5:21Speaker 2: them as well. They walked beside the two men in silence. However,
- 5:26Speaker 2: one turned to Elisha and whispered, Do you know that
- 5:29Speaker 2: the Lord is going to take your master away today?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Elijah looked at the prophet intently and put his hand
- 5:36Speaker 2: on his shoulder. He gave a quick smile and said, yes.
- 5:41Speaker 2: He then turned to look at his master walking ahead
- 5:43Speaker 2: of him, but he will not speak of it today.
- 5:47Speaker 2: The men had arrived at Bethel and Elijah stayed for
- 5:50Speaker 2: a few moments to speak to the Lord. Elijah stood
- 5:53Speaker 2: at a distance. He was always curious as to how
- 5:56Speaker 2: the Lord spoke to Elijah. Was it how he spoke
- 5:59Speaker 2: to him? Was it through whispers or feelings? Did he
- 6:03Speaker 2: see an angel before him? These were things Elisha would
- 6:07Speaker 2: never know. Elisha turned to Elisha and said, You should
- 6:11Speaker 2: stay here, my boy, for the Lord has told me
- 6:14Speaker 2: to go to Jericho. There was a weariness in Elisha's voice.
- 6:19Speaker 2: It was almost as if he had run away from
- 6:21Speaker 2: his age for years and it was finally gaining on him.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Elisha smiled again and said, No, I think I will
- 6:29Speaker 2: go with you. As the Lord lives, I shall not
- 6:32Speaker 2: leave your side. So the two set off again towards Jericho.
- 6:37Speaker 2: When they arrived, Elijah departed again to pray. A group
- 6:41Speaker 2: of prophets from the area walked up to Elisha, who
- 6:44Speaker 2: was standing at a distance from his master. They brought
- 6:47Speaker 2: him in and whispered, Did you know that the Lord
- 6:50Speaker 2: is going to take Elijah away today? This time there
- 6:53Speaker 2: was a slight heaviness in Elisha's chest as he replied,
- 6:57Speaker 2: Of course I know, he said somberly, but do not
- 7:01Speaker 2: speak of it. Elijah finished praying and came back to Elisha.
- 7:06Speaker 2: It is time for me to go to the Jordan River.
- 7:09Speaker 2: You should stay here. It was a silly command, for
- 7:13Speaker 2: Elijah knew that his young student would not leave his side.
- 7:17Speaker 2: The two of them traveled a short while to the
- 7:19Speaker 2: Jordan River. A group of prophets followed them at a distance,
- 7:23Speaker 2: curious as to when Elijah would pass away. The two
- 7:27Speaker 2: men stopped beside the Jordan. The river flowed heavily. Tumbling
- 7:31Speaker 2: rocks could be heard from beneath the waters. Elisha removed
- 7:35Speaker 2: his cloak and folded it into a whip. He swung
- 7:38Speaker 2: his hips and struck the water with his cloak. Elisha
- 7:42Speaker 2: watched as his master's cloak caused the flowing river to
- 7:45Speaker 2: split before them. The river divided, and the two of
- 7:48Speaker 2: them were able to cross on dry ground. Hundreds of
- 7:51Speaker 2: memories flowed in Elisha's head as they crossed. Memories of
- 7:55Speaker 2: stories told for generations. Stories of God splitting the Red
- 8:00Speaker 2: Sea for Moses and the Jordan River for Joshua. Was
- 8:03Speaker 2: his master as faithful as they were? Did he hold
- 8:06Speaker 2: the same favor of God? The two of them walked
- 8:10Speaker 2: along the path and Elijah could sense Elisha's mind racing.
- 8:14Speaker 2: He smiled and said, Tell me, my son, what can
- 8:18Speaker 2: I do for you before I am taken away? Elisha's
- 8:22Speaker 2: eyes lit up. He did his best to withhold his
- 8:25Speaker 2: boyish grin. I want a double share of what the
- 8:28Speaker 2: Lord has given you. I want to be your successor
- 8:31Speaker 2: and see greater things done for God. Elijah was pleased
- 8:36Speaker 2: at his request. Elisha did not just want to be
- 8:39Speaker 2: as faithful as Elijah. He wanted to be more faithful.
- 8:42Speaker 2: He wanted a double portion of God's Spirit upon him.
- 8:46Speaker 2: You have asked for a great and difficult thing, Elijah
- 8:50Speaker 2: replied frankly. However... If you see how I am taken away,
- 8:55Speaker 2: then your request will definitely be granted, for God will
- 8:59Speaker 2: show his glory to those he wishes to use. If
- 9:02Speaker 2: you do not witness my departure, then you will not
- 9:05Speaker 2: receive any of his spirit. The two walked and talked
- 9:10Speaker 2: for a few moments. Elisha watched his old master walk
- 9:14Speaker 2: purposefully forward. Then, suddenly, the clouds opened up like fortified gates.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Blinding light emanated from the sky, only it was not
- 9:23Speaker 2: light from the sun. Elisha could hear trumpets sounding like thunder,
- 9:28Speaker 2: and he watched as a chariot of fire descended violently
- 9:31Speaker 2: from the clouds. The chariot was consumed with fire and
- 9:35Speaker 2: drawn by horses of flames. Elisha could not see who
- 9:39Speaker 2: was riding the chariot, but he could see it descending
- 9:42Speaker 2: as if the air was thick enough to ride on.
- 9:45Speaker 2: The chariot blew in between the two men, flinging Elisha
- 9:48Speaker 2: back onto the ground. He watched as his master was
- 9:51Speaker 2: wrapped up in a whirlwind. The bright light swirled around
- 9:55Speaker 2: the old prophet in the chariot of fire like a tornado.
- 9:59Speaker 2: As the winds blew violently and the light burned brightly,
- 10:02Speaker 2: Elisha could see a smile worn on the face of
- 10:05Speaker 2: his master, Elijah. I can see it, Elisha yelled to
- 10:09Speaker 2: his beloved master. Tears filled his eyes as he watched
- 10:13Speaker 2: the beauty of God unfolding before him. My father, I
- 10:17Speaker 2: can see you. I can see the chariots of Israel. Then,
- 10:22Speaker 2: just as quickly as it came, the whirlwind left with
- 10:25Speaker 2: Elisha wrapped up in it. All was calm and still.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Elisha remained on the floor in awe of what had
- 10:33Speaker 2: just happened. Elisha's face was covered in tears and dust.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Elisha looked down at his clothes to realize he had
- 10:42Speaker 2: torn his shirt in amazement. He stumbled to his feet
- 10:46Speaker 2: and walked towards the cloak Elijah had left when taken up. Silently,
- 10:51Speaker 2: Elisha picked up the cloak, folded it, and headed down
- 10:54Speaker 2: to the river. Had God given him his spirit? Elisha
- 10:58Speaker 2: lifted up the cloak, swung his hips, and struck the
- 11:01Speaker 2: water as his master did just moments before. Elisha watched
- 11:05Speaker 2: as the rivers opened up before him. A content smile
- 11:09Speaker 2: slid across his face. A group of prophets saw this
- 11:13Speaker 2: from a distance and exclaimed, Elijah's spirit is upon Elisha.
- 11:18Speaker 2: So they ran to him and bowed before him. The
- 11:21Speaker 2: reverence made Elisha uncomfortable, for he knew it was the
- 11:24Speaker 2: spirit of God. The men were frantic in saying, Do
- 11:28Speaker 2: you want us to look for your master? Perhaps the
- 11:32Speaker 2: Lord brought him to another place. Elisha shook his head
- 11:35Speaker 2: and said no. He knew his master was gone with God. However,
- 11:40Speaker 2: the prophets insisted and still looked. For days they searched
- 11:45Speaker 2: and found nothing. A few days later, the town of
- 11:48Speaker 2: Jericho sent leaders to visit Elisha. They came to him
- 11:52Speaker 2: with a dire problem they needed the Lord's aid in.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Our town is beautiful, but our water is toxic and
- 11:58Speaker 2: causing disease, they said. Our crops are poisoned and our
- 12:02Speaker 2: children are sickened. Elisha considered their problem carefully and prayed
- 12:06Speaker 2: to the Lord for wisdom. He had them bring him
- 12:09Speaker 2: a bowl of salt. Then he went out to the
- 12:12Speaker 2: spring that supplied the town with water. He bent down
- 12:15Speaker 2: and threw the salt into the water. He whispered slightly
- 12:19Speaker 2: to the Lord and then turned to the leaders and said,
- 12:22Speaker 2: The Lord has purified your water. Neither death or infertility
- 12:27Speaker 2: will plague this city. As Elijah was leaving, a group
- 12:30Speaker 2: of boys began mocking him. They threw insults and stones
- 12:34Speaker 2: his way. Go home, baldy, they shouted, mocking his bald head.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Forty-two boys bombarded Elisha with evil laughter and prideful spitting.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Elisha did not speak. He only looked at them intensely. Then,
- 12:50Speaker 2: in a terrifying turn of events, two bears ran towards
- 12:54Speaker 2: them from the woods. Their growls drowned out the screaming
- 12:58Speaker 2: of all forty-two boys. Their claws tore them limb from limb,
- 13:02Speaker 2: and they feasted on the mocking teenagers. Elisha walked away
- 13:06Speaker 2: from the thrashing and went back to Mount Carmel.
- 13:12Speaker 3: As we read God's Word today, we find Elijah and
- 13:15Speaker 3: his apprentice, Elijah, walking together on the road from Gilgal.
- 13:20Speaker 3: It had been more than six years since the Lord
- 13:22Speaker 3: had led Elijah to the young man, Elisha, and since
- 13:25Speaker 3: that day the two had walked side by side, closely together.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Elijah knew that God had plans for Elisha, and the
- 13:33Speaker 3: job that Elisha was going to take on was no
- 13:36Speaker 3: small task. So the seasoned prophet poured his life into
- 13:40Speaker 3: his apprentice. mentoring him in how to walk with God,
- 13:43Speaker 3: how to listen to God's voice, how to be a
- 13:46Speaker 3: man of God. Surely, as they walked along the road,
- 13:49Speaker 3: he continued to train him and teach him, especially now
- 13:53Speaker 3: as Elijah knew that his time was ending. Because that
- 13:56Speaker 3: day was different, it was time for a changing of
- 13:59Speaker 3: the guard. Elijah first tells Elisha that God had called
- 14:03Speaker 3: him to Bethel. But Elisha knows this day is different also,
- 14:07Speaker 3: and he insists he won't leave his master's side. Elisha
- 14:11Speaker 3: wanted to make the most of the time he had
- 14:13Speaker 3: left with his mentor to learn all that he could
- 14:16Speaker 3: and to enjoy his presence while he was still able.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I think many of us can relate to this kind
- 14:21Speaker 3: of sentiment, the desire to make the most of what
- 14:24Speaker 3: time we have with a very special person in our life,
- 14:28Speaker 3: whether it is a spouse or a child or a friend.
- 14:33Speaker 3: So both men went to Bethel together. The prophets in
- 14:36Speaker 3: Bethel asked Elisha if he knew God was going to
- 14:39Speaker 3: take Elijah away that day. He said he did, but
- 14:43Speaker 3: he did not want to speak of it. God then
- 14:46Speaker 3: led Elijah to Jericho. Again, he asked Elisha to stay behind,
- 14:51Speaker 3: but Elisha refused to part with his master. So they
- 14:54Speaker 3: went together, and once again, the prophets asked Elisha if
- 14:58Speaker 3: he knew God was about to take Elijah. He said yes,
- 15:02Speaker 3: but to keep quiet. Why did he want them to
- 15:05Speaker 3: keep quiet? Not because it was some big secret, as
- 15:09Speaker 3: it seemed God had made known to many of the
- 15:10Speaker 3: prophets to whom he spoke. But Elisha said this because
- 15:14Speaker 3: he didn't want to get caught up in talking about
- 15:17Speaker 3: what was going to happen, that he missed what actually
- 15:20Speaker 3: did happen. His mind was focused on watching and waiting
- 15:24Speaker 3: for what God would do. How often do we get
- 15:28Speaker 3: our attention pulled away by concerns or anticipation of things
- 15:31Speaker 3: to come, even worry, and we miss what God is
- 15:34Speaker 3: doing right in front of us? Always focus on today
- 15:38Speaker 3: and maximizing every day of your life. And so when
- 15:42Speaker 3: Elijah tells Elisha to stay there while he goes to
- 15:45Speaker 3: the Jordan River, his answer is obvious. No, he will
- 15:49Speaker 3: walk with him. The events at the Jordan take us
- 15:52Speaker 3: back to so many moments when God's glory and power
- 15:56Speaker 3: were on display throughout Jewish history. Supernatural power. When Elijah
- 16:01Speaker 3: strikes the water with his cloak and the river parts,
- 16:03Speaker 3: It was a reminder that God is the same God
- 16:06Speaker 3: who parted the sea for Moses and the very same
- 16:08Speaker 3: river for Joshua. After they crossed on dry land, Elijah
- 16:13Speaker 3: asked his apprentice something. We read his question and Elisha's
- 16:17Speaker 3: response in 2 Kings 2.9. When they had crossed, Elijah
- 16:23Speaker 3: said to Elisha, Ask what I shall do for you
- 16:26Speaker 3: before I am taken from you. And Elisha said, Please,
- 16:30Speaker 3: let there be a double portion of your spirit upon me.
- 16:34Speaker 3: What a wonderful request. Elisha knew that he had impossible
- 16:39Speaker 3: tasks in front of him and big shoes to fill.
- 16:42Speaker 3: And his question shows his humility and his maturity and
- 16:46Speaker 3: his selflessness. He wasn't just asking this for himself, for
- 16:50Speaker 3: his own glory or power. He wanted to be fully
- 16:53Speaker 3: prepared to be a man of God, to speak God's word,
- 16:57Speaker 3: to minister to the people just as Elijah had. So
- 17:00Speaker 3: he asked for more, more of God's power, more of
- 17:03Speaker 3: God's blessing. a double portion of the Spirit of God.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Elijah told him this is a heavy request. He knew
- 17:12Speaker 3: what the life of a prophet meant, and it often
- 17:14Speaker 3: meant fierce opposition from wicked people. Notice he did not
- 17:18Speaker 3: give him a yes or no because he knew this
- 17:20Speaker 3: was not his to grant, but God gives spiritual power.
- 17:25Speaker 3: So he told Elisha to watch what was about to happen.
- 17:29Speaker 3: And if he could see him being taken up, translated
- 17:32Speaker 3: up into heaven, He would know God would grant his request.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Elisha then saw an amazing sight. It was spectacular. It
- 17:41Speaker 3: was supernatural. Chariots of fire and a whirlwind descending from heaven. Fire,
- 17:46Speaker 3: which had marked so much of Elijah's ministry, was now
- 17:49Speaker 3: being used to usher him into the presence of the Lord,
- 17:53Speaker 3: the one he had faithfully served. This was a rapture.
- 17:57Speaker 3: This was a translation into heaven. Elijah did not die
- 18:00Speaker 3: a physical death. Elisha saw it all and knew God
- 18:05Speaker 3: had granted his request. It was a moment filled with
- 18:08Speaker 3: wonder and amazement, but also sorrow and grief, for now
- 18:12Speaker 3: the man of God, his mentor, a man who has
- 18:15Speaker 3: been like a father to him, is gone. We close
- 18:19Speaker 3: the passage with Elisha immediately seeing God's power working in him,
- 18:24Speaker 3: first in the parting of the Jordan once again, and
- 18:26Speaker 3: then as he brought about healing to Jericho's poisoned waters. Yes,
- 18:31Speaker 3: God's hand was on Elisha, and he would do great
- 18:35Speaker 3: things in the name of the Lord, pointing the Lord's
- 18:37Speaker 3: people towards hope and righteousness and faith, and God would
- 18:42Speaker 3: bless him abundantly. Dear Lord, the God of Elijah and Elisha,
- 18:49Speaker 3: we thank you for this extreme example of faith and perseverance.
- 18:53Speaker 3: We thank you for your power to take us to
- 18:55Speaker 3: heaven when our time comes, and Lord, that we are
- 18:58Speaker 3: trusting in you not only throughout life, but at the
- 19:01Speaker 3: end of our lives. We thank you for Elisha's relationship
- 19:06Speaker 3: with Elijah. And we pray that you would give us
- 19:09Speaker 3: influence on those around us, our family, our friends, members
- 19:14Speaker 3: of our churches, that we would mentor and coach and
- 19:17Speaker 3: guide and give spiritual leadership to those around us. Help
- 19:21Speaker 3: us to be men and women of God, always seeking
- 19:24Speaker 3: your truth and proclaiming your name.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Amen.
