Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: When Your Own Potential Makes You Giddy
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Emily Abadi here you are listening to five
- 0:23Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. I am feeling a lot better
- 0:28Speaker 1: than the beginning of the week. My voice has returned
- 0:30Speaker 1: after cheering for friends and loved ones and complete strangers
- 0:34Speaker 1: at the Chicago Marathon, and it's been a really great week.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I'm feeling really.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Motivated and excited now that that's behind me, with less
- 0:44Speaker 1: than three weeks to go until the New York Marathon.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And what I want to talk about today is this
- 0:52Speaker 1: thought process I'm having around the concept of embracing my
- 0:57Speaker 1: own potential. I am at a point right now where
- 1:01Speaker 1: I have no interest necessarily doing things that I did
- 1:06Speaker 1: when I was in my twenties or early thirties, and
- 1:09Speaker 1: this specifically pertains to running. I am pretty confident that
- 1:14Speaker 1: my days of running sub three thirty marathons are behind me.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I am so content with the ability to chase my
- 1:23Speaker 1: own potential as it feels good to me right now
- 1:27Speaker 1: as I am in this current body.
- 1:31Speaker 2: But I would be remiss if I.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Didn't say that I am excelling and performing and running
- 1:36Speaker 1: in a way that even I am a little bit
- 1:40Speaker 1: surprised by right now. And so it's such a cool
- 1:45Speaker 1: feeling to ask myself, like, what could happen for me
- 1:50Speaker 1: on November third, and knowing that what my goal is
- 1:57Speaker 1: isn't really rooted in a number, but rather it's really
- 2:01Speaker 1: rooted in a feeling. I want to feel so strong
- 2:06Speaker 1: and so powerful and really embrace all of this gratitude
- 2:10Speaker 1: I have for this process and my city and the
- 2:13Speaker 1: people that show up on that day. I want to
- 2:16Speaker 1: get to the finish line ideally without hitting that wall
- 2:20Speaker 1: that we love so much, and have a great freaking
- 2:25Speaker 1: time out there.
- 2:26Speaker 2: That is my goal. That is it?
- 2:29Speaker 1: And would I mind snagging some sort of a personal
- 2:34Speaker 1: best on the course and the process, of course not,
- 2:37Speaker 1: But realistically speaking, I want to have a good time.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I want to do what I didn't do in twenty
- 2:44Speaker 1: twenty one when I totally bonked at mile eight. I
- 2:48Speaker 1: want to see my people and feel the energy and
- 2:53Speaker 1: not be so dialed into my splits and worrying about
- 2:56Speaker 1: whatever it is that my watch says. I just want
- 3:00Speaker 1: to experience it in all of its amazingness and remind
- 3:05Speaker 1: myself and bathe in this feeling that I get to
- 3:10Speaker 1: do it. Truly, I get to do this. And when
- 3:15Speaker 1: I say that I get chills a little bit because
- 3:17Speaker 1: I remember when I thought that I was in capable period,
- 3:21Speaker 1: not just of running a marathon. I mean that in
- 3:24Speaker 1: itself is a hard thing, but I remember feeling incapable
- 3:27Speaker 1: of even running a mile. And so when I say
- 3:30Speaker 1: it like that, and I think about where I've come from,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and I really reflect back to the episode that I
- 3:35Speaker 1: shared earlier this week with Des Linden talking about her
- 3:38Speaker 1: best practice tips for the marathon. I'll link that in
- 3:40Speaker 1: the show notes, but she says to aspiring marathon ors
- 3:44Speaker 1: applicable to this moment as well, look at where you've been,
- 3:48Speaker 1: you know, look at the training and see what you
- 3:52Speaker 1: have done. And sometimes when emotions come up and feelings
- 3:57Speaker 1: get in the way, we are are in this place
- 4:01Speaker 1: where we forget that we've put in the work. I've
- 4:04Speaker 1: put in the work not just over this marathon training cycle,
- 4:08Speaker 1: but over the last dozen plus. I mean, god, I'm
- 4:11Speaker 1: thirty six. I've been running for almost twenty years now. Wow,
- 4:17Speaker 1: that is something to be proud of, and it's something
- 4:19Speaker 1: that has genuinely changed my life and me for the better,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and for that I am beyond grateful. My question for
- 4:28Speaker 1: you this week is what jornear you on right now
- 4:31Speaker 1: and what can you look back on to see how
- 4:34Speaker 1: far you've come? Do you keep a journal on your
- 4:37Speaker 1: way to your big goals? How are you reflecting and
- 4:40Speaker 1: can you do a little bit of that reflection right
- 4:42Speaker 1: now to gain some perspective of where you've been and
- 4:46Speaker 1: where you're going.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Hey, Emily, I love listening to the podcast on my
- 4:53Speaker 1: way to work and it's really had such an impact
- 4:56Speaker 1: on my life with overall wellness, So thank you. And
- 5:00Speaker 1: I are looking to start a life audit every year
- 5:02Speaker 1: with a check in halfway through the year. What were
- 5:06Speaker 1: your first steps in this do you have a template
- 5:08Speaker 1: you use? Thanks in advance, Megan. I love this question,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and it's crazy that we are almost Oh my gosh,
- 5:15Speaker 1: it's almost November, which means we're almost at December, which
- 5:18Speaker 1: means we're almost at twenty twenty five, which is bananas.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I do a life audit at the end of the year,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and I do quarterly check ins with myself and I
- 5:27Speaker 1: love that my birthday. I'm a June baby, and so
- 5:30Speaker 1: every year after my birthday, I really kind of have
- 5:33Speaker 1: a personal summit of sorts which I've detailed on Instagram
- 5:36Speaker 1: before I will link that post in the show notes.
- 5:40Speaker 1: So the way that I do this is at the
- 5:42Speaker 1: top of every year, or maybe toward the end of
- 5:45Speaker 1: the year, I sit down with one of my best
- 5:47Speaker 1: friends and we outline goals in six categories health, finances, work, career, relationships,
- 5:56Speaker 1: personal growth, and mindfulness. We also jot down some things
- 6:00Speaker 1: on our bucket list, so things to do or experiences
- 6:04Speaker 1: to have, people to connect with, places I want to
- 6:06Speaker 1: visit or explore, and then there's of course an other category.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And so we make these goals and then we get
- 6:14Speaker 1: a little bit deeper than that and really go into
- 6:19Speaker 1: specifics on a few outcome goals. So, for instance, maybe
- 6:23Speaker 1: one of your goals is that you want to make
- 6:26Speaker 1: a certain amount of money, maybe it's seventy five thousand
- 6:29Speaker 1: dollars for the year and put ten thousand dollars in
- 6:32Speaker 1: your savings account, whatever those numbers might be that feel
- 6:34Speaker 1: good for you, And so writing down what are the
- 6:37Speaker 1: motivations for this goal, What are certain progress milestones that
- 6:41Speaker 1: you can achieve? So perhaps you want to secure one
- 6:45Speaker 1: third each month by the thirtieth So.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Do the math on that. What are critical drivers? So
- 6:51Speaker 2: what can help you get to your goal.
- 6:53Speaker 1: For me, as someone that is an event host, maybe
- 6:56Speaker 1: I'm pitching four event ideas to brand quarter or perhaps
- 7:01Speaker 1: I am pitching five new podcast sponsors by the end
- 7:05Speaker 1: of Q two. I think you're following me now. And
- 7:08Speaker 1: the last thing in this outcome goal flesh out is accountability.
- 7:13Speaker 1: What is it that you can do to keep yourself
- 7:14Speaker 1: on track? Again, both of us are working with a
- 7:17Speaker 1: friend on this, so bringing them into your constant goal setting,
- 7:21Speaker 1: your constant audit of sorts will be a huge, huge
- 7:25Speaker 1: help and going after the things that excite you. I
- 7:28Speaker 1: love your idea or your question of asking me if
- 7:30Speaker 1: there's a template. I think this is something that I
- 7:33Speaker 1: will work on over the next month or so and
- 7:35Speaker 1: released by the end of the year, So stay tuned
- 7:38Speaker 1: on that. Make sure if you have another listener question
- 7:42Speaker 1: to come back to me email us over at Hello
