- 0:00Speaker 1: Let me get the interface up and patching, Elena, and
- 0:04Speaker 1: we shall begin. It's Elena Wood, Elena Wood from Nightingale College. Elena,
- 0:09Speaker 1: I have this question I have to ask you before
- 0:11Speaker 1: we get started. Okay, okay, how much water do I
- 0:14Speaker 1: actually need to drink?
- 0:17Speaker 2: This question is really timed perfectly. The answer, like many things,
- 0:22Speaker 2: is it depends.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Oh is that what we're going to talk about today?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Getting hydrated?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Yes? Oh darn so so yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I mean there used to be. I mean, and they
- 0:38Speaker 3: still are water Nazis.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You know, they're kind of like, because you've got a
- 0:42Speaker 1: drink eighteen sixty down glasses? Are people who carry around
- 0:46Speaker 1: those half gallon jokes? Yeah, I've got to drink this
- 0:49Speaker 1: whole thing today.
- 0:50Speaker 3: It's ridiculous. It's just bizarre. So what does it depend on?
- 0:57Speaker 2: So some of the factories that are going to influence
- 0:59Speaker 2: how much water you actually need include your body size,
- 1:03Speaker 2: your activity level, health status, geographic location. Of course, folks
- 1:09Speaker 2: in Utah probably need a little bit more just because
- 1:11Speaker 2: it is so dry, how much salt you're eating, your gender,
- 1:17Speaker 2: age can even impact it. So really it's it's quite nuanced,
- 1:22Speaker 2: which makes it pretty hard to say flat out like
- 1:25Speaker 2: everybody needs to have this amount.
- 1:28Speaker 1: But there's no nuance in your first bullet point. This
- 1:32Speaker 1: is not nuanced at all. If you're thirsty, drink some water.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I do feel like we overcomplicate things sometimes.
- 1:41Speaker 2: And you know, if your if your throat is starting
- 1:44Speaker 2: to feel dry, your mouth is dry, you know, want
- 1:47Speaker 2: grab some water, have a drink. It will probably help.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Now when Gina says she drinks diet coca and she
- 1:54Speaker 1: said there's water in this. Yeah, yeah, say, if anybody
- 1:58Speaker 1: needs to be hearing this, it's Gina, she's not here.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Well what about coffee recording?
- 2:06Speaker 3: Yeah, like you know, gatorade and coffee. It's like, what
- 2:11Speaker 3: do those make any Are those useful? Yeah?
- 2:15Speaker 2: These do definitely help. We absolutely want water, just plain water,
- 2:20Speaker 2: to be our primary source of hydration, and we can,
- 2:24Speaker 2: like you're saying, we can get hydration from these sports
- 2:27Speaker 2: drinks and juices and yes, even sodaes do have water.
- 2:32Speaker 2: But just be careful using these as your primary source
- 2:37Speaker 2: because they also have other ingredients that you know, like caffeine,
- 2:41Speaker 2: which we'll talk about later, can be a diuretic, so
- 2:45Speaker 2: it might make you feel more thirsty throughout the day.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Things like that.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Yeah, you're not.
- 2:49Speaker 1: If you're trying to hydrate with coffee, you're just gonna
- 2:52Speaker 1: it'll make you pee it all the way.
- 2:54Speaker 3: When you do that, it has a special smell that
- 2:57Speaker 3: you've been drinking. Okay, hey, you went there. We have
- 3:01Speaker 3: a Lena, No, I did not. All right, we have
- 3:05Speaker 3: a wood on there be a gentleman. All right, you
- 3:08Speaker 3: brought a pea. I didn't bring up how it smells.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Nick, geez, sorry, all right, please continue.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Where are we? How much water does the average person?
- 3:20Speaker 3: Let's talk about that.
- 3:22Speaker 2: That is such a great one. On average adults need
- 3:25Speaker 2: about three liters of water per day, and the recommendation
- 3:29Speaker 2: is to get about two of that from drinking plain water.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And then that third leader comes from our things like
- 3:36Speaker 2: fruits and vegetables and tea and all of the other
- 3:40Speaker 2: places that that we get hydration from.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Elena, I'm not from Europe. How much is a leader?
- 3:49Speaker 2: I actually was looking this up just to make sure
- 3:51Speaker 2: I had the right numbers. It's about four cups.
- 3:54Speaker 1: About four cups and so yeah, okay, so do you
- 3:58Speaker 1: drink twelve cups of water or other liquids today? Okay,
- 4:04Speaker 1: that's simple enough. And then tell you about caffeine.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yes, so just pay attention if you are drinking a
- 4:11Speaker 2: lot of caffeine, just be aware that it might make
- 4:14Speaker 2: you need to go to the bathroom more frequently, might
- 4:17Speaker 2: make you feel more thirsty throughout the day, So you
- 4:19Speaker 2: might need to rehydrate if you are consuming a lot
- 4:22Speaker 2: of caffeine.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And then of course, if you're really active and athletic,
- 4:28Speaker 1: then you might even need to drink more, right.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely so. If you're playing sports, if you're working
- 4:34Speaker 2: out a lot, sweating a lot, you definitely will need
- 4:38Speaker 2: to replace that lost liquid a little bit. Also, folks
- 4:42Speaker 2: that are a little bit older, for whatever reason, we
- 4:46Speaker 2: do need more water as we age. And then of
- 4:49Speaker 2: course pregnancy can impact your hydration needs as well.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Okay, now this next one, here's an opportunity for Nick
- 4:55Speaker 1: to go wild again. Sure we're going to talk about urine.
- 4:59Speaker 3: All right, Oh suddenly it's a hell thing. Yeah yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 3: what do you mean suddenly? I thought we were discussing health.
- 5:08Speaker 3: We are, so pay attention to your urine.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Would talk about that, Elena, Yes, so the color of
- 5:13Speaker 2: your urine can actually help you know whether or not
- 5:17Speaker 2: you are hydrated enough. It should be ideally kind of
- 5:21Speaker 2: a very light to clear yellow color. And as it
- 5:26Speaker 2: starts getting darker or if it seems like brownish, then
- 5:30Speaker 2: you might be experiencing some dehydration. Of course, the foods
- 5:34Speaker 2: that we eat, the supplements, the medicines that we take
- 5:37Speaker 2: can impact that as well, So just be aware, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 2: if you have I can't even think of a good example,
- 5:44Speaker 2: but if you have been eating or drinking something that
- 5:48Speaker 2: does change the color and not, just be aware that
- 5:50Speaker 2: that might be the thing, and not necessarily hydration.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and and please of course if it's red, get
- 5:58Speaker 1: to the doctor immediately. Yeah. And and this is this,
- 6:02Speaker 1: this is you need to look at the color of
- 6:04Speaker 1: your own urine. Don't be checking out other part.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Yes, yes, don't look at a.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Very personal and private situation. So you know, keep this
- 6:12Speaker 2: one to yourself and your doctor.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Is it bad if it's totally clear.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You know, I would say typically probably not that if
- 6:22Speaker 2: you are having different health things like if you're not
- 6:25Speaker 2: feeling well, then you know, get checked out.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Of course, I'm trying to think of what food there
- 6:30Speaker 1: are foods that will make your change the color of
- 6:34Speaker 1: your urine. Well, they remember they used to sell that soda.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Joan soda had a and you would drink a Jon
- 6:41Speaker 1: soda and it would make your urine blue.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Or the smell, yes, oh my gosh.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Anything I could think of was asteragus. But that's just
- 6:49Speaker 2: the smell typically and not necessarily the color. So but
- 6:53Speaker 2: there was didn't have a good example.
- 6:54Speaker 1: There was that Joan soda thing that was that was
- 6:57Speaker 1: really weird. I tried it and it worked.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I don't remember that. Which was it. I don't know why. Now, okay,
- 7:02Speaker 3: stop making it.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't make it anymore. Well, these are It's
- 7:06Speaker 1: fun to talk about urine, isn't it.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Absolutely It's very important to our health as well, so
- 7:12Speaker 2: we should normalize these kinds of conversations.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Yes, sorry, and Bill, yeah, Bill, and just and just
- 7:18Speaker 3: remember if you're thirsty, have a drink of water. Water, yes,
- 7:26Speaker 3: some water.
- 7:27Speaker 1: All right, Elena, thank you very much. If you want
- 7:29Speaker 1: to find out more about all of this stuff, what.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Do you do?
- 7:33Speaker 2: You can learn more about this as well as Nightingales
- 7:35Speaker 2: Amazing programs by visiting Nightingales dot edu.
- 7:39Speaker 3: All right, thank you, thank you very well.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You take care.
- 7:42Speaker 3: We'll see this conversation is making me thirsty, all right,
