Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Prime Minister's just announced he's off to India. He's
- 0:02Speaker 1: going on Saturday and he's going to meet Prime Minister
- 0:05Speaker 1: no Endra Modi. He's taking the largest delegation our Prime
- 0:09Speaker 1: minister has ever traveled with. This is the first visit
- 0:12Speaker 1: since John Key went there in twenty sixteen. I think
- 0:14Speaker 1: this is the third visit that we've had a crack
- 0:16Speaker 1: at this. So Barrat Tala is the chair of the
- 0:20Speaker 1: India New Zealand Business Council. He joins me, Now, hell
- 0:22Speaker 1: about it?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hey, Hell, are you very good?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Why is this trip so significant?
- 0:28Speaker 2: I think if you want something done with India, this
- 0:31Speaker 2: would be a strong foundation taking ahead any discussion, any
- 0:35Speaker 2: negotiation with India.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Okay, So look, only one point five percent of New
- 0:39Speaker 1: Zealand exports go to India. India's on track to be
- 0:42Speaker 1: the third largest economy in the world by twenty thirteen.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Why have we been neglecting this market for so long?
- 0:48Speaker 2: I think this question has to be asked from a
- 0:51Speaker 2: lot of ministry and political diplomats. It has not neglected,
- 0:56Speaker 2: it's just the timing was not there. I feel that
- 0:59Speaker 2: the government with a lot less after twenty sixteen, and
- 1:03Speaker 2: that has made us into a kind of a back seat.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But last twelve months with the current government and the
- 1:10Speaker 2: minister is going left right center, which is kind of
- 1:13Speaker 2: bringing the things on track. So we can say that
- 1:17Speaker 2: we are late, but we are not too late. Okay.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So what do we have to do in this trip
- 1:22Speaker 1: to make sure that our relationship is closer that we
- 1:25Speaker 1: can increase our terms of trade.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I think one thing which we can say or we
- 1:29Speaker 2: can kind of positive say that the meeting with Minister
- 1:33Speaker 2: Prime Minister Modey is kind of a big win, which
- 1:36Speaker 2: we were as a MCBC asking from last a few years.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Now getting to a with a bigger delegation show that
- 1:43Speaker 2: we are in a relationship mode. We are not only
- 1:47Speaker 2: in the transitional mode. So this trip kind of gives
- 1:52Speaker 2: a very good message to Indian government and the private
- 1:55Speaker 2: companies in India that museum is open for business and
- 1:58Speaker 2: we should be looked into.
- 2:00Speaker 1: What do you think India wants from us? I mean,
- 2:02Speaker 1: what do we make that they would want?
- 2:04Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing India is looking currently is
- 2:07Speaker 2: investment in India. At the same time bringing technology in
- 2:10Speaker 2: India and kind of bringing what they see that helped
- 2:15Speaker 2: to grow India. So currently in every negotiation and every
- 2:18Speaker 2: deal which India is doing, they've been always putting that
- 2:22Speaker 2: how India can grow together with you and that will
- 2:25Speaker 2: help us to grow or grow the other side of
- 2:27Speaker 2: the business too. So what we can do is we
- 2:30Speaker 2: take the investments. We talk about the technology transfers. There's
- 2:35Speaker 2: a lot, a lot needs and can give to India.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Is a nuclear free stance a problem because India has
- 2:43Speaker 1: ambitions for their place in the world militarily, they're already
- 2:46Speaker 1: a nuclear power. Is our stance, our nuclear energy and power?
- 2:50Speaker 1: Is there a problem when we talk to the Prime
- 2:53Speaker 1: Minister of India.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I think I don't see that is kind of an
- 2:57Speaker 2: issue with Newism only because see like every country had
- 3:01Speaker 2: their own chance and to be honest news and should
- 3:03Speaker 2: say be what we want to do. But in a
- 3:07Speaker 2: couple of things, India also don't want any anything which
- 3:11Speaker 2: is from a news in perspective that they want needs
- 3:13Speaker 2: them to support on everything. But again at the trade
- 3:16Speaker 2: is one area we talk about. I said, a nuclear
- 3:19Speaker 2: diplomacy is separate area to work in. There's always kind
- 3:23Speaker 2: of a common area to start it. And we are
- 3:26Speaker 2: not too in that discussion of a kind of nuclear diplomacy.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yet I can say that.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Okay, so how confident are you of success?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Finally, I think I think from I we are. We
- 3:38Speaker 2: are a lot positive, a lot optimistic. Now a lot
- 3:43Speaker 2: have been done by a lot of companies from New
- 3:46Speaker 2: Zealand to India or in India in the last twenty
- 3:49Speaker 2: four months to make this happen. So this is a
- 3:51Speaker 2: perfect opportunity and a perfect I say that tailwind for
- 3:56Speaker 2: New Zealand to get something from India.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Absolutely about a child. I thank you so much for
- 4:00Speaker 1: your turn here as the chair of the India and
- 4:02Speaker 1: New Zealand Business Council. For more from Early Edition with
