Before Geddy Lee ever joined, Rush’s bassist was Jeff Jones—a Chicago-born jazz kid who picked up the baritone ukulele as a kid and eventually fell in love with the bass. He jammed with guitarist Alex Lifeson since age 13, later teaming up with drummer John Rutsey to form the early Rush trio. They even casually picked the name “Rush” before their first gig in 1968, playing blues and psych-rock covers.
