- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast that
- 0:14Speaker 1: has taken a sharp left turn into the world of
- 0:16Speaker 1: PBS Masterpiece. I'm Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I'm Wendy.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I'm a former Hallmark hater and a new PBS love.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Would have seen that one coming. On today's episode, we
- 0:30Speaker 1: are discussing the PBS Masterpiece series The Foresights, Episode one one.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It has no title, no neither does the next episode,
- 0:39Speaker 1: which originally aired on PBS on Sunday, March twenty second.
- 0:44Speaker 1: It is currently available to stream on PBS dot Org
- 0:48Speaker 1: or on the PBS Passport. If you're wondering what's going
- 0:51Speaker 1: on here, we invite you to follow us on Instagram
- 0:54Speaker 1: where we are Girls Gone Hallmark. That's where you can
- 0:56Speaker 1: find out the latest from us. But another great resource
- 1:00Speaker 1: for you is Girls Gone Hallmark dot Com. Detailed episode
- 1:06Speaker 1: show notes for every podcast episode live there. But there
- 1:09Speaker 1: is a ton of additional content about Hallmark and about
- 1:13Speaker 1: these PBS series that we are watching over there.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it was Instagram where I saw the promotion for
- 1:23Speaker 2: the Four Sights and I was like, hmm, I wonder
- 1:25Speaker 2: if our listeners would be into that and I'm telling
- 1:28Speaker 2: you they came through.
- 1:31Speaker 1: They really did. And they also told us that The
- 1:34Speaker 1: Foresights has already been renewed for seasons two and three.
- 1:39Speaker 1: We may be in this for the long haul.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Oh no, it's gonna be ten seasons later. We're gonna
- 1:44Speaker 2: be like here we are.
- 1:46Speaker 1: We're reviewing The Count of Monte Cristo as well. Those
- 1:49Speaker 1: episodes drop on Thursday, so if you haven't listened to those,
- 1:51Speaker 1: go give those a listen. That's an excellent series. But
- 1:54Speaker 1: that was Wendy's first PBS series, and then when we
- 1:56Speaker 1: went into The Foresights, it's a different vibe. Similar in
- 2:01Speaker 1: some ways, like we're still in the nineteenth century. It's
- 2:03Speaker 1: still a period piece all of this. It's still very
- 2:06Speaker 1: PBS masterpiece. But I'm a big fan of Downton Abby,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and I'm this is different in some ways in a
- 2:13Speaker 1: lot of ways than Downtown Abby. I'm super curious. Email
- 2:17Speaker 1: us hello at Girls Gone Hallmark dot Com. I'm not
- 2:21Speaker 1: objective in this case. If you think Wendy would like
- 2:23Speaker 1: down to Abby based on what she has to say
- 2:25Speaker 1: about this episode today, Megan is really pushing for it.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I don't want to review it. I rewind it's too
- 2:31Speaker 1: there's too much content. I'm just curious what people think
- 2:34Speaker 1: if they think you would like it. It's not gonna
- 2:36Speaker 1: be my new throw on show. I can't throw on
- 2:38Speaker 1: Downton Abby. You need to pay attention, Okay, okay, you
- 2:45Speaker 1: need to be traumatized by it all.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Well, I'm oh, I'm really interested too. I'm interested in
- 2:53Speaker 2: your feedback, Meghan, after my reaction to this, as well
- 2:57Speaker 2: as the listeners. If I would love if I should
- 2:59Speaker 2: give out Nabby a chance. Well, let's hear a synopsis
- 3:03Speaker 2: for episode one of the Four.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Sights before I dive in.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I just want to say that on IMDb the synopsis
- 3:11Speaker 2: was incorrect, so I, oh, fix it. I didn't fix
- 3:14Speaker 2: it on IMDb. I fixed it for our retelling.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It got it.
- 3:19Speaker 2: The Four Sights prepared to celebrate June's eighteenth birthday and
- 3:23Speaker 2: her formal entrance into society, but Julian Senior delivers a
- 3:28Speaker 2: shocking announcement at the party, while Francis uncovers a distressing secret.

- 4:24Speaker 1: Interesting Tuppens Middleton stars as France's Foresight. Tuppens has fifty

- 4:36Speaker 1: in Downton Abbey and Downton Abbey A New Era. Do
- 4:39Speaker 1: you remember her? No, I don't know who Lucy Smith is.
- 4:42Speaker 1: There's a lot of characters. Who's Lucy Smith in Downton Abbey?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, in the first She was Lucy Smith in the
- 4:48Speaker 2: first project, and then she had a different last name
- 4:50Speaker 2: in the second project.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Oh I Know Who she is? Okay?
- 4:55Speaker 2: Justin Mmore appears as teenage June Fortsite. This is her
- 5:00Speaker 2: her eighth acting credit, and has appeared in Call the
- 5:03Speaker 2: Midwife and the mini series Without Sin.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Eleanor Tomlinson stars as Louisa Byrne. Eleanor has thirty four
- 5:09Speaker 1: acting credits, with roles in The Outlaws and pol Dark.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Stephen Moyer plays Jolian Foresight's senior. Stephen's best known for

- 6:09Speaker 1: Fiona Button plays Clarissa Harron with twenty ninth acting credits.
- 6:12Speaker 1: She is known for her roles on The Split and
- 6:15Speaker 1: the HBO series Industry. There's a lot of crossover, ye
- 6:19Speaker 1: tons of crossover. Tristan Sturik appears briefly as Professor Herron.
- 6:24Speaker 1: He has forty four acting credits with roles in Industry
- 6:27Speaker 1: and Pol Dark. Eleanor Jackson plays Solmes's sister, Winifred Darty.
- 6:32Speaker 1: This is her seventh acting credit and largest role to date.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Tom Durrant Pritchard plays Montague Darty. Tom has appeared in
- 6:40Speaker 1: The Crown and the Windsors. Susan Hampshire appears as Lady
- 6:44Speaker 1: Carteret Susan Start in the original nineteen sixty seven BBC
- 6:49Speaker 1: The Foresight Saga and won the first of her three
- 6:52Speaker 1: Emmy Awards for that role. Oh When Ikahon appears as Isaac.
- 6:58Speaker 1: This is just his second acting credit. We're gonna take
- 7:01Speaker 1: a quick break and we're gonna come right back with
- 7:02Speaker 1: our first impressions. Hey, Wendy, what was your first impression
- 7:14Speaker 1: of The Foresights Episode one?
- 7:16Speaker 2: You know, I love a bad boy Pelm's hive rise up.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I'm just picturing the Instagram images. Awesome. My first impression
- 7:29Speaker 1: is no one told me I would need to hydrate
- 7:30Speaker 1: before watching this series Secret Twins in episode one? Who
- 7:34Speaker 1: saw that coming? Which is God? Answer to which is
- 7:36Speaker 1: probably everyone who is not new to the Foresight saga,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but not me. Love this series. I am telling you,
- 7:44Speaker 1: oh so far, my gosh, it is rapid fire. Let
- 7:48Speaker 1: me tell you right now, the difference between this show
- 7:50Speaker 1: and Down to Nabby. Down to Nabby is like, here's
- 7:52Speaker 1: a little bit of drama and now we're gonna sit
- 7:54Speaker 1: with it and process it. And this is like boom
- 7:56Speaker 1: boo boo boom. We are not waiting one second of
- 8:00Speaker 1: time here.
- 8:01Speaker 2: That is so interesting that you say that I will
- 8:06Speaker 2: have more to discuss when we talk episode two.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Here's what I liked.
- 8:10Speaker 2: This show is giving like rich people making well, actually
- 8:16Speaker 2: rich people behaving badly.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I love it, but also.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Like make it beautiful, Like, it's so pleasing to look
- 8:23Speaker 2: at everything from like the costume to the sets, the houses, Like,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I love all of it. Can you believe I'm saying that, Look,
- 8:32Speaker 2: it's the Real Housewives set almost two hundred years ago.
- 8:37Speaker 1: One hundred percent. I love it.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Except they don't like have screaming fights with each other.
- 8:43Speaker 2: You know, everything's very no but they're.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Real shady totally.
- 8:47Speaker 2: That's that's why I find it so kind of tantalizing.
- 8:52Speaker 1: When the Stone side of the family is gossiping about
- 8:54Speaker 1: their next door family. You're like, I love it, Yes, yes, yes.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I want to give credit to a friend at the show, Georgia.
- 9:04Speaker 2: She is a TV writer. She had to explain that
- 9:08Speaker 2: this show is Succession meets the guilded Age and for
- 9:12Speaker 2: someone who watched Succession but not the guilded Age, because
- 9:15Speaker 2: I was like, I'm not watching that period piece, it
- 9:18Speaker 2: is totally Succession for sure. It's a great, like a
- 9:23Speaker 2: great I've.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Only seen a few episodes of Succession, but I'm very
- 9:26Speaker 1: familiar with the premise and yeah, all the fighting for
- 9:31Speaker 1: power within the family. Yeah, So, like I mentioned, I
- 9:39Speaker 1: found this episode was a little bit exhausting, Like they
- 9:41Speaker 1: throw a lot of information at you, like I feel
- 9:44Speaker 1: like you kind of need to be paying attention to
- 9:46Speaker 1: get it. And I enjoy that. Like do you remember
- 9:50Speaker 1: when Netflix is like, yo, writers, dumb it down because
- 9:54Speaker 1: people are watching with their phones in their hand, and
- 9:57Speaker 1: I like that. This show is like, we're not going
- 9:59Speaker 1: to do that. Pay attention GTFO. Rightmm. So the opening
- 10:03Speaker 1: wedding sequence sets the scene so nicely. We have our
- 10:08Speaker 1: voice over from Grandmama, but it really sets up like
- 10:11Speaker 1: the family dynamic and it does such a nice job
- 10:15Speaker 1: of setting the scene and who's on whose side and
- 10:18Speaker 1: we have this wedding and we have this daughter and
- 10:21Speaker 1: cut to the reception and we build that relationship right
- 10:26Speaker 1: there with Joe and June. When she's like do I
- 10:30Speaker 1: have to like you? He's like no, and she's like
- 10:32Speaker 1: love because I don't like anybody, and I was like, girl,
- 10:35Speaker 1: same totally. I was like I feel you, June that
- 10:38Speaker 1: I put that on a T shirt. I don't like anybody.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And then they kind of come together when the grandmother's
- 10:45Speaker 1: like look be seen and not heard, like don't make waves,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and you know she Joe reaches out and takes her
- 10:51Speaker 1: hand and like you see right there, like there's that
- 10:53Speaker 1: little connection and past forward ten years and they still
- 10:56Speaker 1: have that.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I liked it me too, same, same, same. Like you said,
- 11:03Speaker 2: there's so much happening.
- 11:05Speaker 1: We have like.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It's not inheritance. I have in my notes this is inheritance,
- 11:10Speaker 2: but it's like who's running the business, Tension, secret children,
- 11:17Speaker 2: strategic marriages. You know, it feels like everybody is plotting something,
- 11:23Speaker 2: but it's also like this quiet betrayal and scandal. I'm
- 11:29Speaker 2: totally locked in on it. I love that you likened
- 11:33Speaker 2: it to Real Housewives two hundred years ago.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I'm also in this first episode kind of unsure of
- 11:44Speaker 2: who to root for.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Oh, I am a Solmes fan. That's so interesting. It's
- 11:53Speaker 1: the bad boy it's the bad Boy team Joe.
- 11:57Speaker 2: I just don't know where I land totally, And I
- 12:02Speaker 2: kind of love that confusing because we have Joe who's
- 12:05Speaker 2: like artistic and emotional and you know, maybe kind of
- 12:10Speaker 2: the renegade of the family that's being pushed into this,
- 12:15Speaker 2: like you are supposed to be this person. You know,
- 12:17Speaker 2: at some point he was like They're like, all right,
- 12:20Speaker 2: come back from your sabbatical and you gotta.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Like her travels.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Do the family businessing and marry this woman and et cetera,
- 12:29Speaker 2: et cetera. Right, and Solms, who was like a little
- 12:32Speaker 2: more ambitious, kind of toxic, calculated. You know, I'm drawn
- 12:41Speaker 2: to that obviously, but I can see like Solms is
- 12:48Speaker 2: the bad boy and Joe is probably the good guy.
- 12:51Speaker 2: But I like both of them, you know, So this
- 12:57Speaker 2: makes it fun, It makes it a fun watch. Homes
- 13:00Speaker 2: will grow on me, but in this episode, I don't
- 13:02Speaker 2: necessarily for me personally, I don't necessarily love a troublemaker.
- 13:07Speaker 2: And there's something about Joe who is doing the right
- 13:10Speaker 2: thing and not really complaining about it. At that wedding,
- 13:15Speaker 2: we hear that that was a planned wedding, like she
- 13:20Speaker 2: was chosen for a reason. But when he turns around
- 13:24Speaker 2: and looks at her, they both smile at each other
- 13:26Speaker 2: and it feels like, oh, this is okay. And we
- 13:29Speaker 2: see them fast forward and they seem to have a relationship.
- 13:33Speaker 2: They seem to have genuine affection for each other, and
- 13:36Speaker 2: obviously we will learn some things, but I'm like, look,
- 13:38Speaker 2: he's he's not just going.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Through the motions. At least it doesn't look that way
- 13:45Speaker 1: from the outside, Like he seems to be treating his
- 13:49Speaker 1: family and his job with reverence, and so I'm like,
- 13:56Speaker 1: it's not like you made me come home and now
- 13:58Speaker 1: I'm just gonna check the boxes. He seems to be
- 14:00Speaker 1: doing it. He seems to be behaving like a good husband,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and at work, he's behaving thoughtfully and he has real
- 14:06Speaker 1: opinions about the things that they're doing, even though they're
- 14:08Speaker 1: different than a lot of the other opinions people are
- 14:10Speaker 1: having at work. To me, I'm like, he's doing it faithfully?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Is my point here? Yes? I agree? So I am
- 14:16Speaker 1: enjoying Jolian. Can we talk about the Foresight co for
- 14:20Speaker 1: a second? The jo Sure. Yeah. When they introduce that
- 14:25Speaker 1: mining stock plot, they're like, oh, that's going to be
- 14:29Speaker 1: taken over and I was like, okay, what's going on here?
- 14:31Speaker 1: And then it comes back around and it's so nice
- 14:35Speaker 1: because it's like a it's a vehicle that kind of
- 14:37Speaker 1: cements the rivalry between the way Joe and Somelm's want
- 14:41Speaker 1: to do things and Solme's going behind Joe's back to
- 14:47Speaker 1: make that decision that ultimately leads to the ruin of
- 14:50Speaker 1: Irene's family, and some's interesting. I like the way they
- 14:54Speaker 1: tie that in really nicely done, increasive writing and plot work.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Can we talk Joe boxing shirtless?
- 15:02Speaker 2: I mean all day long, I was like, PBS is like,
- 15:06Speaker 2: we're gonna keep it.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Classy, but we'll give you a little bit of something
- 15:10Speaker 1: something here. I didn't hate it.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I was like, it made it sexy without being like gratuitous.
- 15:16Speaker 1: You know, sure, I enjoyed it.
- 15:21Speaker 2: A couple of other little things that I like, the
- 15:23Speaker 2: introduction of Louisa as the dressmaker, immediate intrigue because she
- 15:29Speaker 2: clocks who the foresights are like when she comes in
- 15:32Speaker 2: and I'm like, what's the relationship here, what's the secret,
- 15:35Speaker 2: what's happening.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I loved all of that.
- 15:39Speaker 2: But then when we get the big old bomb shot, well, actually,
- 15:42Speaker 2: let me back that up. When we have the reunion
- 15:45Speaker 2: between Joe and Louisa at June's party, yes, you know,
- 15:51Speaker 2: I mean, I was like, Okay, this is interesting. But
- 15:54Speaker 2: then we see Francis noticing in the background yes, and
- 15:58Speaker 2: then Francis confirmed wants her, and then the bombshell of
- 16:02Speaker 2: here are my two children and this kid's name is Joe.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I was like, holy crap balls, Well that's what I
- 16:10Speaker 1: mean about this show. Like I think most shows might
- 16:12Speaker 1: have made us wait for all of that information, like
- 16:15Speaker 1: we may not have gotten the reveal of who Joe
- 16:17Speaker 1: was to Luisa and who her children. Like when the
- 16:21Speaker 1: children come out, I'm like, oh, my gosh, they're twins, right,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and so I'm like, and let me guess they're ten
- 16:26Speaker 1: years old. When I talk about the way that Joe
- 16:29Speaker 1: looks at Francis, I was like, there seems to be
- 16:31Speaker 1: real affection there. But when he sees Louisa, yes, I
- 16:35Speaker 1: was like, Oh, that's his girl. Like great acting on
- 16:39Speaker 1: the part of Danny Griffin because the difference in his
- 16:42Speaker 1: facial reactions to the two women is so striking, and
- 16:45Speaker 1: it's like, Oh, he loves her and isn't subtle about it, right,
- 16:51Speaker 1: Like he's in a room full of people the other
- 16:53Speaker 1: family clocked him talking. I know, I'm liked on the
- 16:56Speaker 1: down low dude his and obviously his wife sees her.
- 17:01Speaker 1: But I really love that they just hit us with
- 17:03Speaker 1: all of this information because obviously the rest of the
- 17:06Speaker 1: season is likely going to be the fallout from what
- 17:08Speaker 1: has come. So I'm glad we got to see all
- 17:13Speaker 1: of that. Everyone having the reveal in this first episode
- 17:17Speaker 1: right right.
- 17:18Speaker 2: The last thing I really liked is this time period
- 17:23Speaker 2: makes me deeply uncomfortable. Most mostly related to like the
- 17:28Speaker 2: social climbing and the transactional marriages, and that women are
- 17:33Speaker 2: kind of like currency a little bit, you know, like
- 17:36Speaker 2: marrying this person for this status, and like it gives
- 17:40Speaker 2: me like the super ick, but it lends itself to
- 17:45Speaker 2: understanding what's happening, you know, if I may. The whole
- 17:50Speaker 2: premise of Downton Abbey starts with they only have daughters,
- 17:53Speaker 2: and daughters cannot inherit and so the eldest daughter has
- 17:56Speaker 2: to marry someone who can inherit the family fortune.
- 18:02Speaker 1: That's the whole thing. Anyway, I agree with you, and
- 18:04Speaker 1: I find Solmes's side of the family to be particularly
- 18:11Speaker 1: egregious because Solmes's father is the younger brother, right, he
- 18:15Speaker 1: doesn't have as much power or prestige, and so they're
- 18:18Speaker 1: just like fighting for it, especially the mom what's her name, Emily. Yes,
- 18:27Speaker 1: she behaves in such a I don't want to use
- 18:32Speaker 1: the word gross, but her behavior is kind of gross.
- 18:34Speaker 1: She's like, oh, what are we gonna get? Like who
- 18:36Speaker 1: are we gonna get for her little sommesy? And I
- 18:38Speaker 1: just am like, oh my gosh, you people. I agree
- 18:41Speaker 1: with you. It's kind of iggy. It's like, how are
- 18:43Speaker 1: we going to elevate our station in life? And yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 1: the way in which Francis uses June. She's like, oh, well,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I invited this family and this family and this family,
- 18:52Speaker 1: and Grandma's like, and why might you have done that?
- 18:56Speaker 1: And I'm just like, gross, this is your child and
- 18:59Speaker 1: you're using her as a pawn. And I have watched
- 19:02Speaker 1: enough of these shows to know that's exactly how it worked.
- 19:05Speaker 3: But it's gross.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. You mentioned the cinematography. The ballet sequence
- 19:12Speaker 1: was especially beautiful to me, the lighting, the way her
- 19:15Speaker 1: hair is down and flowing, the dress that she the
- 19:19Speaker 1: ballet dressed me. It's not a tutu. Really, it's stunningly beautiful.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I know, I can't get past. I'm like, ballerinas should
- 19:28Speaker 2: have their hair up in buns. Why is her hair
- 19:30Speaker 2: down and free flowing as she's dancing around?
- 19:32Speaker 1: I mean, I agree, and that flows into one of
- 19:35Speaker 1: my wishes. If you're ready, Oh I am ready. There
- 19:39Speaker 1: are some anachronisms in this series. Tell me more so.
- 19:46Speaker 1: The hair is all wrong across the board. Really, women
- 19:50Speaker 1: do not wear their hair down in public ever, No,
- 19:56Speaker 1: their hair is up. Your hair would not be down
- 19:58Speaker 1: like that. Now. Is irene hair gorgeous? Yes? And if
- 20:02Speaker 1: you I think it's in the second episode where she's
- 20:04Speaker 1: dancing with other dancers, the other dancers have their hair
- 20:07Speaker 1: up and hers is I'm like you, No dancer has
- 20:09Speaker 1: their hair down and flowing. I understand her curls are beautiful,
- 20:12Speaker 1: but all these women have their hair down. No, their
- 20:15Speaker 1: hair would be up. The men would wear hats outside. Also,
- 20:20Speaker 1: Joe's hair way too boy bandy, fully outside of the
- 20:25Speaker 1: realm of reality. The facial hair now do I like it?
- 20:29Speaker 1: I do, but much like Bridgerton plays with this a
- 20:32Speaker 1: little bit. I know you haven't seen Bridgerton, but there's
- 20:35Speaker 1: a lot of people of color in the mix, which
- 20:38Speaker 1: would not have been the case. You know, there's a
- 20:40Speaker 1: lot that they're doing there as well, just to make
- 20:42Speaker 1: it more visually interesting and fun to watch. I don't care.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I'm not like, ugh, I can't believe they were unfaithful
- 20:49Speaker 1: to this. There are a lot of people out there,
- 20:51Speaker 1: hop on Reddit they're big mad about some of the
- 20:54Speaker 1: ways that the hair does not match. The time. To me,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I'm like, it's okay. They don't always need to be
- 20:59Speaker 1: in a freaking hair. But I like the long hair
- 21:03Speaker 1: must be exhausting to be pinning it up every morning
- 21:06Speaker 1: and letting it down every night, but it is worth noting.
- 21:10Speaker 1: How do you know this?
- 21:11Speaker 2: Is this from your years of watching down Nabby or
- 21:14Speaker 2: just the internet?
- 21:16Speaker 1: Okay?
- 21:17Speaker 2: My hang up with Joe's look is the beard, because
- 21:21Speaker 2: like we see him in his time in Venice, and
- 21:26Speaker 2: he's got like these long, long, curly hair, right, which
- 21:29Speaker 2: is great. That gives me a visual cue in time,
- 21:33Speaker 2: but he's still got the same beard. And then he's
- 21:35Speaker 2: got that beard when he gets married, and he's got
- 21:37Speaker 2: that beard ten years later. I'm like, come on, yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 2: is that the thing he couldn't let go of? Oh
- 21:44Speaker 2: that's interesting for yourself?
- 21:46Speaker 1: Or is it just that he looks real good with
- 21:47Speaker 1: the beard?
- 21:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 21:48Speaker 1: Maybe?
- 21:50Speaker 2: And you're right, his hair is real quafft, Like you know,
- 21:55Speaker 2: I don't hate it, no, dude, Yeah, but just I
- 22:01Speaker 2: need some a touch more clarity on like timeline, especially
- 22:05Speaker 2: when we're going back so many years, like make the
- 22:08Speaker 2: man look slightly different.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 22:13Speaker 2: My next wish is in regards to the business side
- 22:19Speaker 2: of things the family firm. I I just need a
- 22:23Speaker 2: little bit more about what's at stake with the company,
- 22:28Speaker 2: Like I don't know exactly what they do stocks Like
- 22:32Speaker 2: are they traders?
- 22:33Speaker 1: But I don't know. I don't know what that I'm
- 22:35Speaker 1: going to be honest, Like I don't really fully know
- 22:37Speaker 1: what stockbrokers do other than like you have a portfolio
- 22:40Speaker 1: of clients and you like make sure that their portfolios,
- 22:44Speaker 1: like they own the right stuff, right like when they
- 22:46Speaker 1: sold off all that mining stock, so that because people
- 22:50Speaker 1: were going to lose confidence once the new guy took over.
- 22:53Speaker 1: None of that makes any sense to me, Yeah, like
- 22:55Speaker 1: how the stock market works.
- 22:57Speaker 2: And I would like to know like his store, Like
- 23:00Speaker 2: obviously this is a family business. How did the two
- 23:03Speaker 2: older brothers, James and Joe, Like how did they get there?
- 23:09Speaker 2: Was it inherited? Is this their business? Was it their
- 23:11Speaker 2: father's business? Like give me, give me some details. Yeah, yeah,
- 23:16Speaker 2: I just need to know, like the investment that we're
- 23:18Speaker 2: dealing with here, you know, like in terms of succession,
- 23:22Speaker 2: like that was a father's multi billionaire business and the
- 23:26Speaker 2: kids were part of it and they were going to
- 23:28Speaker 2: inherit it or one of the kids was going to
- 23:32Speaker 2: inherit you know what I mean. It's the same sort
- 23:33Speaker 2: of thing but like give it a little bit more weight.
- 23:37Speaker 2: So I'm understanding that.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Correct. I hear you.
- 23:45Speaker 2: If you skipped through our news and notes the cast breakdown,
- 23:50Speaker 2: I don't blame you, because there's a lot of players here,
- 23:56Speaker 2: a lot of people, and the amount of work that
- 23:59Speaker 2: I had to do to go back and be like, Okay,
- 24:00Speaker 2: who is this person?
- 24:01Speaker 1: How are they related? Who is this person? How are
- 24:05Speaker 1: they related?
- 24:05Speaker 2: Like, yeah, I need a vinn diagram?
- 24:09Speaker 1: Yeah, there isn't meet the cast page on PBS. Did
- 24:13Speaker 1: you see that? I didn't, And it's a little bit
- 24:15Speaker 1: helpful because I have to admit that as I was
- 24:19Speaker 1: as I was watching this show, it's the foresights, the
- 24:23Speaker 1: definitive character guide. As I was watching this, I was like,
- 24:26Speaker 1: wait a minute, what's Som's's mom's name, What SOM's his dad?
- 24:30Speaker 1: I just and I was like, who are these people?
- 24:32Speaker 1: They introduce so many of them, and then they kind
- 24:35Speaker 1: of almost backwards engineer them, like we meet a lot
- 24:38Speaker 1: of them before we know anything about them. And so
- 24:41Speaker 1: I think that's one of the things that will probably
- 24:43Speaker 1: get richer throughout the season. But they maybe could have
- 24:48Speaker 1: like doled them out to us a little bit more slowly.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Agree, agree, and in fact, like does Joe Senior even
- 24:56Speaker 2: have a wife?
- 24:57Speaker 1: Widowed father to Joe?
- 24:58Speaker 2: So okay, but like they don't even talk about that,
- 25:02Speaker 2: not that I just was like, Hall, no, I don't remember,
- 25:06Speaker 2: don't remember.
- 25:07Speaker 1: My final wish is.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I'm embarrassed to even say it, but like I need
- 25:14Speaker 2: more of the spice, like give me more shirtless scenes.
- 25:19Speaker 1: We do get two more in episode two spoiler alert, But.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I kind of I kind of like it was down
- 25:27Speaker 2: mabby ever at times spicy, not.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Any spicier than this, Like I mean, in my first season,
- 25:34Speaker 1: you know, a man dies in bed with Oh, that's
- 25:39Speaker 1: Lady Mary, but they don't show and I mean it's PBS,
- 25:41Speaker 1: it's public access television. Yeah, so they walk a very
- 25:47Speaker 1: careful line. I'm into it. Mm hmm, I'm into it.
- 25:51Speaker 1: That's all I have for wishes? Did you have any more?
- 25:53Speaker 1: I just there's a lot more details that I'm hoping
- 25:57Speaker 1: for that I like I said, I think a lot
- 26:01Speaker 1: of the drama is fired at us in episode one,
- 26:03Speaker 1: and then we're gonna untangle all of that throughout the season.
- 26:07Speaker 1: But we know that Solmes and Joe our rivals. Is
- 26:11Speaker 1: it simply because somes by virtue of being the son
- 26:16Speaker 1: of the second son, is in an inferior position? Or
- 26:22Speaker 1: is there more there? Right? Right? Right?
- 26:25Speaker 2: That's a great question. I have some discussion questions if
- 26:28Speaker 2: you want to be.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Cool, let's get into it. Do you think you would
- 26:31Speaker 1: thrive in this time period? No? Why? Well? The only
- 26:36Speaker 1: way in which I would thrive in this time period,
- 26:38Speaker 1: and please feel free to judge me, is in a
- 26:44Speaker 1: high society household, like where things are being done for me.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Got it, got it, that's the truth. I was not
- 26:52Speaker 1: meant for an uncomfortable life. I just life is so
- 26:55Speaker 1: much harder. Getting around is harder, Your day is harder.
- 27:00Speaker 1: There's less to do, Like you see Solmes's mom, especially
- 27:05Speaker 1: in the second episode, just like sitting there with her
- 27:06Speaker 1: dog while the dad's reading the newspaper. I'm like, don't
- 27:09Speaker 1: you have something to do?
- 27:13Speaker 2: Yeah? Especially you know a lady of a certain means, right,
- 27:18Speaker 2: she's not cleaning or cooking, so she wouldn't have anything.
- 27:21Speaker 1: But so much of your time like getting ready, You
- 27:24Speaker 1: get ready for your day, and then you get ready
- 27:26Speaker 1: for dinner, and then you perhaps have a visitor. I
- 27:31Speaker 1: don't again, you don't know. Obviously I wouldn't have experienced
- 27:36Speaker 1: life in twenty twenty six, so perhaps I don't know.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Do you think you would thrive in this time period?
- 27:42Speaker 2: No, I think that I would maybe have too many
- 27:48Speaker 2: opinions about.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Things, yeah, yeah, and things.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Too much like when I'm twenty twenty six, windy, right
- 27:56Speaker 2: time period?
- 27:58Speaker 1: I don't know. So I tend to be a person
- 28:00Speaker 1: who doesn't love to rock the boat. So when I
- 28:03Speaker 1: see someone like the character of June, I find it
- 28:06Speaker 1: very interesting. I'm like, Oh, this is a person who
- 28:07Speaker 1: knows her own mind and does not want to be
- 28:09Speaker 1: told what to do. And in a time where certainly
- 28:14Speaker 1: feminism was not a strong driving factor, would I have
- 28:18Speaker 1: had enough of an influence to know what I know
- 28:21Speaker 1: and feel like? Would that be innate that I'd be like,
- 28:24Speaker 1: what are you doing to me? I don't know? Yeah?
- 28:26Speaker 1: Or do you not even know better at that time?
- 28:28Speaker 1: You know? Yes? Like if if your mother is telling
- 28:32Speaker 1: you that this is the way it is, do you
- 28:34Speaker 1: just accept it or you know? What is it that
- 28:39Speaker 1: that gives you that information? I don't know, right right?
- 28:43Speaker 2: If you are Francis, yeah, I want to have about Francis,
- 28:47Speaker 2: how quickly are you clocking the Luisa situation? At the party.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Well, my husband reaches for her hand. Ye, And I
- 28:56Speaker 1: saw the look on his face. And I'm not his wife.
- 28:59Speaker 1: You are his wife. My point is I, as a viewer,
- 29:02Speaker 1: saw the look on his face. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 29:05Speaker 1: yeh yeah. And I think if that were my husband,
- 29:07Speaker 1: I would be even more in tune with his emotional cues. Yeah, yeah, Okay,
- 29:13Speaker 1: what do you want to talk about Francis? Well, I
- 29:15Speaker 1: just think she's such an interesting character and the connection
- 29:20Speaker 1: we see that she has with Joe Senior. Yes, he's
- 29:27Speaker 1: very interesting. It's almost like they're closer. Yes. Why didn't
- 29:32Speaker 1: they get married? Well, because Joe didn't need the station
- 29:38Speaker 1: boost that Joe Junior did. Okay, fair, Joe Senior was
- 29:43Speaker 1: already in a position of power. Joe Junior needed the
- 29:47Speaker 1: connection of Francis in order to bring him fully up
- 29:51Speaker 1: to paw. Got it, got it, got it, got it,
- 29:54Speaker 1: And she's the power in the power couple. Yeah. I
- 29:58Speaker 1: just think that's one to watch Francis.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Do you think they're going to make Francis our villain?
- 30:04Speaker 2: That's a great question, which is kind of sad. I mean,
- 30:08Speaker 2: she's conniving to a extent. I mean she's she is
- 30:15Speaker 2: very much into like what their status is and what
- 30:19Speaker 2: they've been working for, And I'm quoting working for.
- 30:25Speaker 1: She's just in a.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Not a great position. She does need to protect, like
- 30:32Speaker 2: her marriage, I guess.
- 30:34Speaker 1: But also, well that's a great point because she's not
- 30:38Speaker 1: a foresight. So as the wife of Jolian, what does
- 30:43Speaker 1: she have should the marriage fall apart? I don't know. Yeah,
- 30:49Speaker 1: what is she entitled to? Is she ruined if their
- 30:52Speaker 1: marriage falls apart? Good question.
- 30:57Speaker 2: My last question is we've talked about the Count of
- 31:01Speaker 2: Monte Cristo and how much we like that after one
- 31:05Speaker 2: episode of this series. Are you hooked or.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Are you just intrigued? If I had to rate the
- 31:13Speaker 1: series next to each other, I would say I like
- 31:15Speaker 1: the Count of Monte Cristo more, but I am hooked
- 31:22Speaker 1: by this series and interested to see where it goes.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Where are you landing?
- 31:27Speaker 2: They're so different very much. I'm enjoying both. Like. I
- 31:34Speaker 2: love that this is in my schedule of things to watch.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, who knew? I know. No one's more surprised
- 31:43Speaker 1: than I am. I know. Thanks for listening to this
